GW means a lot to me.

My old DnD buddies and I had been meeting for 20 years or so, since highschool, but were drifting apart as marriage, kids, and career options pulled us away. One of the guys found this cool sounding game we could play together online now that we could no longer meet for our pen and paper gaming session in person.

We named our guild after our DnD character group name and explored all that Tyria had to offer. It was a blast. It helped old friends keep in touch when life conspired against us. In time we met other players and our guild grew. In time Black Flag (BF) was full and was the lead guild in a full alliance of full guilds with a waiting list to join. These people were friends as well as allies and guildies as we strove to keep the small intimate guild vibe with over 900 members.

During my time in GW1 I met the woman who would become my wife. Probably the best prot monk I’ve ever met. I consider myself the luckiest man in the world to not only have a wonderful woman at my side, but a gamer buddy as well.

We didnt port BF over to GW2, and we dont all play any more, but Tyria still represents an important and ongoing chapter in our lives.

On behalf of an entire group of oldschool gamers, most of whom will never visit a game forum because talking about gaming instead of doing it is a foreign concept to them, who were drawn into this newfangled online gaming thing by a lack of sub fee, and who stayed because the game(s) rocked…thank you, and happy anniversary.

Thank you Anet!

I learned about GW2 from my brother. He played this Game since came out.

“Fear not this night” is my favorite song. When I listened this in the Anniversary Video I had tears in eyes.
Thank You Ree for the fantastic song!!!

I met fantastic people in Guild Wars 2 and in this great Forum. I met with critiques and with understanding from Players.

I didn’t play Guild Wars 2 since came out but these 2,5 years I play was great.

And the twitch’s streams are the most memorable. I felt like in the big Family. Everything was the best with the best host- mrs Rubi. I really love the music and I would say big THANKS for Maclaine Diemer and Lena Chappelle who left Guild Wars 2 few days ago. This Game has great designers and the coming back to Guild Wars 2 and seeing a lot of fantastic screens is just beautiful.

I am so emotional.

Thank You that You made the best Game ever.

Thank You that I am part of the best Community.

I have tears in my eyes. Sorry.

See You all in Guild Wars 2! Thank You for Your attention.

Thank you Anet for making a game that encourages people to work together (in PvE) instead of against each other: multi-tag mobs, personal loot drops, shared gathering nodes, etc…

Indeed. GW2 is the first MMO I’ve loved. I’ve played other games and enjoyed them, but I really love GW2 (and GW1). So, thank you for the years of fun, Anet.

Thread seems very ungrateful.

For a game that has been out since 2012 we have seen basically no outages.

that’s a lot of stuff to do in 2 and a half hours…. impressive lol. I lost my daily rewards so nothing too major. Being a long time MMO player im still wary of doing anything significant on patch days. Kudos to Anet for spotting the issue so quickly and fixing it before it got out of control.

Sorry that you were so unlucky but i had a great time on GW1 myself. Was nice to see the game populated again for a few hours.

Well RIP most of my dailies… At least I did home instance gather last night…

Game’s been down for way too long. I think at this point some sort of compensation for both the losses in progress and the very long downtime would be right. Even something small.

A reminder. You don’t own your account. Arena net owns it and allows you to use it. Everything is theirs and any progress is their property.

That is true. However, PR wise it would be bad to let too much time go by without giving something in return to players.

I don’t think we’ve crossed that time point yet, however.

We’ve crossed that time point. Arena net needs to send me my 2 gold and 10AP.

But how does ANet differentiate between those who did their daily before the rollback and those that didn’t? It would be easy to tell those who did before the patch and those who didn’t.

If they do stay down until too close to reset time tomorrow, then one could argue for giving players a free daily. But not for today. Especially considering today is patch day. Players should not expect every patch day to go smoothly and should plan accordingly. It would also be different if today was not a regularly scheduled patch day.

I at least partially disagree. I think it is 100% reasonable to expect a fully playable, bug-free game immediately following a patch.

Yes, MMO’s have a history of iffy bug-filled if not game-breaking patches.

ANet is selling a product (or, depending on how you look at it, providing paid support for a product), whether you’re F2P or not.

As such, as a paying customer (let’s not argue semantics on “paying” here, I know it’s not sub based) it is our right as a consumer to expect a fully functioning product (in this case, perfection). Maybe not demand it, that goes a bit far. Now normally, the result of a defective product is the company repairs or replaces it in a timely manner at no charge. Well, that doesn’t really work with an MMO, since you can’t simply return anything. Which leads to a precedent that goes as far back as at least EQ1: Compensation.

Pretty much every online-component game that either ate items or was down for a significant amount of time has provided some form of compensation for that.
-In EQ1, when a bug ate a player corpse (fell through the world, you had to recover your items off your dead body with your new body), the game masters would restore your items and usually all of the lost exp (you lost a significant amount of experience when you died). And depending on how long it took them to do it, sometimes threw you a “we’re sorry” novelty/trinket item (I kept getting stacks of beer). I don’t know exactly how they did it, but they were able to maintain logs of every item you had and even which slot it was equipped/stored in.
-In WoW, if the servers were down more than 24 hours your account was credited a prorated amount generally equal to total downtime plus 10%, because it was subscription based. If it was down between 8 and 23.9 hours but went down due to a game-breaking bug/glitch, they usually comped you a full day anyway but didn’t really have to, as a form of “we screwed up, sorry”. Can’t have customers paying for a product they can’t use.

Given the vast number of computer systems out there and companies having no way to test against that, I would not expect any patch to be completely bug free.

Should most patches be free of major game/product breaking bugs? Yes.

But one should never go into patch day thinking that this patch won’t be the minority that has one.

For a non-subscription based game, unless the problems last for more than ~24 hours, I don’t feel there needs to be any compensation given out to every player. ANet’s willing to work with players saying they got a precursor or other such extremely rare item during the time frame that will be erased.

I am disappointed in the lack of understanding.
I am sure ‘they’ did not intent for this to happen and are working their kitten off to fix this.
I’ve been playing since GW1 and it’s not like this is a regular issue.

I send a hug to all the people who are trying to solve the issue.

And for anyone thinking ‘Perhaps I can get a precursor by falsely claiming to customer support I lost one!’.

… No.

ANET very likely will maintain replica-like access to the contaminated database with more than enough information to corroborate your claim is false.

Kindly do not waste their time.

Thanks – I know how unpleasant everyones day has been, and I can imagine it will be longer yet.

One thing I did want to mention is that if something was on sale and was purchased during those two hours, someone might not have enough gems to purchase it again and await the refund – which could cause some negative feelings that they need to “buy moar gems!” in order to get in on the sale. Depending on how much caffeine is still in the proverbial pot, extending the sales from today into another day might be appreciated. (I’m actually a bit confused why this would happen, since anything that was on sale when the new client dropped should presumably still be on sale for the rest of the day, I thought gemstore rotation happened midday at the same time as patches, and did not to coincide with for e.g. daily resets)

As we previously posted, today’s release unfortunately contained a bug that damaged character records, and in response we’ve taken down the game servers and are in the process of rolling back the state of the game to where it was before the release.

We shut down the game servers at approximately 11:30 am PDT (18:30 GMT), and we’re rolling back the game state to 9:10 am PDT (16:10 GMT), so there’s a 2h 20m window where all changes to the game are being rolled back. Here are the details for what will happen to various changes made during that window.

If you created a new account during that time period, you’ll have to create it again. If you changed an account, for example changing your password or applying two-factor authentication, you’ll have to redo that change. If the customer support team changed your account for you, for example restoring it to you, they’ll redo that change over the next 24 hours.

If you purchased the game on an existing account, we’ll restore your purchase. If you purchased the game on a newly created account, you’ll need to recreate your account. We’ll contact you so we can restore your purchase after you have recreated your account.

If you purchased gems, we’ll restore the gems. If you purchased an item using gems, that purchase will be rolled back, and you’ll have your gems back. You can purchase again. If you purchased a sale item that’s no longer on sale, you can purchase again, then contact customer support for a refund of the difference between the current price and the sale price.

All in-game transactions are being rolled back, including transactions through the currency exchange, trading post, guild bank, and in-game mail. The trading post will come back online after the rest of the game does, and with buy and sell offers back where they were prior to this morning’s release.

Character progress made during the affected time period is being rolled back. If you had an extreme situation, for example you got a precursor from the mystic forge and then had that rolled back, contact our customer support team and we’ll try to help you.

Thank you for bearing with us through this process. We’ll be back online soon.

I suspect they didn’t put a default message in because they very rarely take the servers offline for maintenance. Normally even unexpected and urgent bug fixes can be done with the servers online.

Even in this case it sounds like they could fix the problem with the servers running, they just took them down to stop more people being affected.

Because that becomes a CS nightmare fixing all those players who get affected if they kept them up. Best to kill it before NA peak hits.

We are heroes. This is what we do!
