Ah yes, that makes sense about Frostgorge. I was thinking from the perspective of the karma rewards.
Has DR simply become an accepted sacrifice that players make, or have developers forgotten about it?
Punishment for playing the game as intended…
My solution to DR has been to switch toons mid-fight. Isn’t that playing against the intended mechanic though?
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to earn wealth in the game (other than the trading post.)
There is a thread about this in game bugs. The suggestion is that it comes from not being directly involved in the mega laser phases. If you spent all your time doing turret duty…
I wish the Living Story added story instances each month.
The opening ceremony for the Jubilee is the first one that comes to mind…. Flame and Frost had storyline instances. Check the other previous updates for additional examples.
Overflow did get my knickers in a knot, but once I had endured the 6 hours of toe tapping in the main, waiting for the Crystal Desert’s Teamspeak leaders to come together for the big event… and we knocked that randy dragon on her butt.. well, that feeling made it all worth it.
I suggest that (as much as I agree that it was a horrible issue) the overflow problems were so frustrating that they made the win that much sweeter.
That said, I haven’t bothered to go for a second, and will gladly wait until the load tapers off or a resolution is devised.
Time gating needs to STAY, period.
Did too! Did not! Did too! Did not! Did too! Did not!
I’m on every day, for many .. many.. in fact.. far too many hours …
I adventure all over the place, and I have fun, because there are things for me to do, that require me put in some effort.
Your rebuttals to my statements are without merit.
If there was no time gating on the materials, you would be spending your time grinding the materials to get the items NOW, which is completely the opposite of having fun, adventuring.
There is this word, that I think younger people may want to study.. it’s called CHALLENGE.
If there is no resistance to you going over the next hill to see what’s there, you’re going to run out of hills pretty darn fast. How can you not see that?
It’s like Pac Man with no ghosts… Super Mario with a hoverboard..
Less coffee, more warm cocoa.
Play safe and sell the rares, OR.. just salvage though them in large blocks (Without counting) and deposit your ectos. When you suddenly can’t deposit ectos, you will be happy to know that there is a good stack in your inventory!
Would you prefer the need to repeat the same content, many times a day, to keep up with others who are willing to? (let’s use CoF as an example, back when it was the best source of gold generation)
There is so much to do, I don’t at all mind being limited to once per day.
Eight, but now I am levelling up different races for all of the storyline achievements…
I only use the Ranger and Guardian regularly, so both have their Legendaries, exotic gear and ascended amulet/rings. No ascended accessories yet, I’m holding out for Legendary trinkets.
I like the idea of there being so much going on that one cannot possibly complete it, forcing us to focus on our own goals for the game. If someone wants all SAB, there it is.. If someone wants Scarlet raids, there it is… If someone wants to explore new continents, well there it will be..
To me, it seems that the problem most players have is: PERSPECTIVE. With this 2 week release schedule, we are all lost in the moment and fail to see that there are big content updates coming every couple of months, within that framework. Having 300+ people working on this game means that the living story isn’t taking away from other types of updates.
In other words, we’re all getting what we want, but not seeing it because of the volume of content, and the variety of it.
I also did turret defence and only received the standard chest at the end of out successful win in crystal desert… And I have video proof of the whole thing, I’m really sad to hear I got gipped for doing a good job and sticking with the plan.
I also seem to recall that branded players did not see themselves as branded..? This would be great.. You see all these branded showing up, but really they are other players.. Who at the same time see YOU as a branded! No one even knows the players are fighting amongst themselves.
We’ve already seen the branded players in a beta weekend event, pre launch. I liked it then, even though it was very short.
This reminds me of how that Branded Devourer event happened.. I would like to see real off-th-cuff “live” events happen, where staff members will throw a random event into a populated area, with no warning. Something truly dynamic, and without a timer. The manual launching of the Scarlet events has worked out well.
Hitting the double digit karma rewards (45-50 range) and seeing exotics at the top of the inventory and blue/white at the bottom (ie: not sorted, not after opening boxes, etc) I see this consistently with any long stretch of content in a single map, since the very early days… RNG is “random” and there is a definite patter of quality reduction over time
I’ve seen the DR of repeating the same event a few times in a row, and this looks like e same thing. Is it that all the minion events are reported as one type, repeated?
If it weren’t for the Karma number crashing so drastically, I would be inclined to think it would be related to gaming fatigue from a single event over a long period.
Interestingly, with champ boxes, there is no DR affect.. But that said, there is no MF impact of these boxes either, as far as I am aware. I should have kept an eye out for karma rates on the frostgorge Zerg tonight..
My second attempt in Crystal Desert’s main map, and remembered to get my stream going ahead of time…

Video of the Tequatl take-down from the eastern most turret.
Audio track includes the Crystal Desert server Teamspeak chat.
I had to get into the map this morning at 8am to make sure I didn’t get kicked to overflow, but it was worth it.
To everyone who hasn’t been there yet – I was frustrated too – you will get it soon enough.

What am I doing wrong with the Scarlet map-wide events that for the last 15 minutes I am hit with diminishing returns? Way back, it was stated that DR wasn’t something users should encounter during regular play…
Was the system not designed for 45 min long events, and no one figured this mattered?
I would be very happy to see DR reviewed and retuned. Maybe? Please?
Or am I playing like a bot by wp ing between the various events vs. running to them?
Yep, ascended trinkets is the best use of your laurels, esp if you are not doing fractals. Where else would you get them? Gold is available everywhere …
Once a world beats Tequatl, all those players have their rewards and are likely to move on.
So, while the event is new, is it possible to respawn every half hour to give more changes to get people in and out, and therefore giving more overflow people the opportunity to get in on the main map action?
To me, this seems like the easiest way to deal with the current AFK/Troll/6hr overflow/guesting/etc. concerns.
Once the event has been around for a while, increase the timer…
Mini Risen Abomination :
http://www.thehotrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/The-Risen-Abomination-Mini.jpg
To overcome (what seems to be) the ongoing concern of server stacking and un-balanced matchups, I have an idea. This comes from my past experience in making online sporting simulation games:
Base the maximum number of players able to join a WvW team on a sum of player RANK , not a total player count.
Example:
Max total rank: 1000
Team one: 200 rank 5 players
Team two: 100 rank 10 players
The maximum has a hard limit (set by ArenaNET) and a low limit (set by the maximum total rank of the lower of the two teams).
Perhaps the scale isn’t 1:1. It’s still probably a good starting place.
A “stacked” server would have a longer queue, with fewer player slots, which will encourage server jumpers to spread out.
Is rank the correct comparison?
Thoughts?
So what’s the point of Legendary, then? You want stat changing, you know where to find it.
Josh needs a long holiday, away from his computer, with the knowledge that he has his company’s ongoing support (which I expect he does).
The game is awesome, the game grows, and the game is in much better shape than one who spends more time on the forum than in the actual game might think.
So, if ArenaNET made everything easy enough to get with a month of play.. what would you do after that? What motivation would you have to go further?
Of course they want it to take time! It’s an MMO, not a 30-day trial of Pac Man.
Once you take away the unrealistic expectation of being given everything immediately, you will find more enjoyment in the adventure.
Good luck.
I wanted more things to spend the karma on. Ascended brings that, though I don’t really care for them since. Prefer the craziness that is legendaries
It does affect newer players though, so I do suggest thakittenbe increased a bit… I have 1.7m left after making 3 legendaries… So it’s not like I need more.
Dashes exist above to overcome kitten insertion system
Ascended weapons are cheap. Try making some legendaries and talk with me then.
The point is that – it – is – a goal to make over time. To hear 5 pages of people fearing the challenge only makes me cringe to think that ArenaNET may backtrack on the ascended level or make it easier.
..and no, it’s not Elitist Allisa. The challenge is like that of anything else in the game: those who want to put in the insane efforts deserve to have something to show for it. If you don’t want to put in the time, you are like the other 99% … Which means that a few ascendeds in a Zerg of 100 people will add .13% each.
The game hasn’t been made harder. Exotics work as well as they ever have.
Makes me feel better about my 3,000 hours, and I really try to avoid Akitteng, especially in LA
I always find new things to do.. With 7 kitted out level 80’s, my goal is a legendary for each. Ascended doesn’t mean anything to me…
What I am doing is saving up for legendary trinkets and armour.
It’s stuff to keep you inspired, not depress you!
And bags/box/etc content is not affected by MF.
With 102% natural, 26% food at 20% ascended, I get as many loot bags as I always did, and see more exotics. That sail my experience over 3,000 hours is that everything comes in waves.. which is the nature of timer seeded random number generation.
When I traded black she’s in pre-searing, daily for 4 years, I noticed a consistent and obvious pattern of black dyes coming in clusters, at nearly the same time, every hour.
How did you not expect that the mini would be available at PAX, and plan accordingly? Do you collect anything in real life? How badly do you want it?
There are a wide variety of ways by which minis have been released. The harder it is to gain a complete set, the more exclusive that set is.
I had a similar rage about minis, sometime shortly after Balthazar. (I was a big collector on GW1 and still have a very nice set in pre searing) instead of quitting, I sold most of them off, bought materials for my first legendary, and live happy to own the ones I may want to use.
The account bound nature kills me most, but I see why it is a good idea.
I planned ahead and own a Mr. Sparkles now, which did not cost me $700!
You should be able to do it in 3 months.
Did this get answered elsewhere? I got two splitters for my two legendaries…
Love love love. Best footfalls. Thank you!!!
I’ve made 6 legendaries in the year of the game’s existence. Truth is it takes 4 months to craft a legendary, assuming you target one of the expensive ones AND take your time going about it. I don’t assume people are going to play at my level and get theirs in two months, but 4-6 months for a legendary is doable even for a casual.
Yep. I made each of my first two in three months each, and the third looks to be on track for the same, though I am acquiring my t6 mats more prudently, this time around.
1. Dreamer
2. Twilight
3. Kudzu
Love love love. Best footfalls. Thank you!!!
Every message I read, leading up to the patch, lead me to the understanding that existing, equipped, MF armour, would be made account bound. There were a couple of items I would have liked to see receive this treatment, but it wasn’t an issue worth making a big deal over.
That said, I think that it is quite clear this wasn’t just my reading…. And some correction is fair for those affected.
I salvaged the items already, and I don’t care about compensation, and I will still continue to countless more hours of Guild Wars .
Thanks for all the stuff the dev team gets right! The new MF system is, IMHO, well done.
Hold 25 regular quartz in inventory and interact with a commune-only skill “challenge” point to make a charged quartz crystal.
If you watched the twitch stream, legendary users will get a transmog splitter.
The question this discussion has raised for me is: Will -everyone- with a Legendary get the transmutation splitter(s), or just those with transmuted Legendaries?
The speculation had a temporary shock to the market, yes. If the time gating wasn’t in place, there would have a been a bigger shock.
If one assumes that every decision Arena.NET makes so solely based on business, one will never be able to enjoy the game for what it is – a game.
The only people who would be able to get Ascended Weapons on Day 1 are those with a lot of disposable gold (and/or stored up mats). These are usually the hardcore players (myself included)..
… if you’re one of those people, then buy a Legendary, or even better.. show how hardcore you are by making one.
You don’t NEED everything on the first day it comes out. Free yourself of the consumerist mentality and you will enjoy life, and games, more.
As for the ongoing “grind grind grind” cries, I’ve got a news flash for you: EVERY GAME IS A GRIND. Do you remember the legends of old – Pong, Pac Man, Donkey Kong… do you think these weren’t grinds?
We, as animals, live for grinds. Why? It’s the simple psychology of patterns – we look for patterns, we find comfort in them, because they are predictable and involve less stress of the unknown. It goes way back to the hunt for food.
Otherwise, if you are a hardcore player, check /age. What % of your account life is going to be spent in the pursuit of your ascended gear? Not much, I bet.
Casual gamers, on the other hand, are likely going to take more than 2 weeks to make their ascended weapons, because they don’t have the gold for the non-farmable items.
So relax, enjoy, and in two weeks you’ll have your ascended gear.. and all the stress you’ve gone through on the forums screaming about how time gating is a bad thing won’t matter.
Just in time for Tequatl…
It’s fixed now.
it’s confirmed that champion loot bags will drop T7 materials.
By WHO? Are you the same person who wrote “confirmed level 90” in a reddit?
I skimmed over the messages in this thread and didn’t see anyone talk about this..
If the ascended weapons were not time gated, the economic impact of the mad rush of people trying to make them on the first day would be overwhelming.
I suggest that this is likely the most important rationale for it.
The thread on the account issues is showing enough people that I felt it important to make some sort of visible thread on here to bring it to the dev attention, if they aren’t already on it…. new players joining for the first time will be quite confused to be at the end of the character creation chain and find they cannot complete the process.
I tweeted to them, hopefully someone is watching. This is a critical game breaking issue right now (not trying to be dramatic.. I will live, but imagine for first time players!)
Same thing happening to me on one of my alt accounts. I made a new character on my primary, earlier yesterday, and it worked fine.
That beautiful green beast in the anniversary trailer… you tease!!
Do we get the jungle dragon any time soon?
From what I have read/heard/watched, regarding the upcoming patch, if…
I transmute my legendary with a magic find stats exotic weapon,
will it become account bound after the patch?
Then, I use the special item which converts the transmuted legendary back to a “real” one?
Will the weapon become soulbound again, once equipped? Sounds like a good way to move it.. if this does work.
That said, I don’t care to move mine, I am happy with the toons I have them on already.
The masterwork crafter can be done so cheaply.. 120 green wood planks and 180 bronze ingots, for example.
I hope to repeat this one two more accounts, tomorrow and Monday, so I can get the maximum of the remaining karma before the rewards are reduced by the “new system” that was temporarily rolled back.
Fortunately, I already have legendaries on my two main toons, so ascended weapons aren’t on my to-do list. I’ll be saving my coppers for the armor.
Masterwork crafter.
