Suggestions for alternative ways to get precursor weapons (legendaries)

I’ll pass. It is fairly easy to get the materials necessary to get legendary weapons. The question is how much time you want to sink into it is all. Getting the mats is simply a time consuming process and I feel an legendary weapon for karma is a cop out. Not very legendary if everyone has it.

Thinking of making an engineer (PVE)

Just for dungeons alone, changing your utility skills alone which can result in completely different play-style for engineers without the need to change your traits is definitely a plus.

Grenades and You: A potential love story

in Engineer

AndrewWaltfeld.4621

Grenades are definitely a love story for me. I usually run Elixir, flamethrower kit and grenade kit with rifle as weapon of choice. I used to run Pistol/shield but as much as I loved the skills, I needed the kiting skills of the rifle far more often. So I ended up sticking with the weapon. The flamethrower I primarily use to support teammates, barbecue massive amounts of mobs or it’s knock-back/smoke screen effect. The grenade kits I use almost exclusively as my main weapon, switching back to the rifle when needed for overcharge shot, jump shot or net shot. Sometimes blunderbuss if I got the time to switch around.

In PvP fights – I intentionally use them to move enemies into kill zones for my teammates as people tend to fear the grenades more (for whatever dumb reason) than my teammates. Often they will do whatever they can to dodge the grenades and usually end up landing smack dab into my parties AoE’s without realizing it.

Rifle or Shotgun?!

Posted by: AndrewWaltfeld.4621

AndrewWaltfeld.4621

Just to toss this in there. Originally there was going to be shotguns in the game, but they ended up merging them with rifles since only engineers primarily used them. Was no point to having them. Shotgun style skill stayed, but the rifle is what the gun is called.

Flamethrower kit isn’t bad either – something to look into.

I tend to go power/precision build.

In groups I plop the healing turret while in solo I have the elixir. I will agree with the others about having two kits you feel works for you and an elixir or gadget of some sort.

My personal favorite -

Rifle, Elixir H, Elixir of choice, Flamethrower, Grenade Kit.

Should be able to easily get to 80 just by doing all the zones and stuff and then straits of devastation. That’s what I did. As soon as I finished Straits, I was 80.

Good for you. Dont think you people are getting it..i dont like running around and theres no point in killing random monsters thanks to arnets dumb move on implementing DR ontop of that xp from per monster is super weak.

Just not my cup of tea.

I understand completely. I would suggest rather than combat – exploring the rest of orr. By doing that alone, you should be able to get to 80 easy.

Nothing like Tossing nades into a group of mobs and then grenade barrage… then they all rush at you and your like… “Well…. Kitten.”

Seems that the majority of the negative posters have no solid proof for any claims of the game “dying”. Anecdotal evidence is meaningless.

The poster Dusk makes some viable counter points, with evidence that can easily be reproduced by anyone that logs into the game, and what are the responses? Nasty personal attacks is the best rebuttal? Attempting to cyber bully is inappropriate, and it really shows your ages.

Too bad you cannot enjoy the game, thank you for supporting it with your purchase, and have fun playing pandas, or whatever you think is a game that is “living”… lol.

Dude, it’s hilarious how they respond too. If you ask them to provide ANY factual information at all, they just call you names and ignore you. But when Dusk gives factual information to the contrary, they vanish.

Or they argue with you and put themselves into a corner with their own words.

A good portion of the medium armor in this game is just plain ugly, I don’t understand how they could have released these designs to the public.

It feels like a musketeer/van helsing fetish theme is happening with over half of all the armor.

Please for the love of god redesign some of the medium armor, they are fugly.

like a trench coat fetish… which I don’t particular don’t mind. I went with a lower armor level look since I liked it alot better. I just wish we had more variety of clothes a bit more for engineer. Though a fair amount look nice, quite a bit deters me. O well, not everything is going to be everyone’s liking.

So the monthly achievements reset a whole day early

Quit being an ignoramus.

Says the guy who chose to guess when monthlies reset instead of finding out for sure.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Achievement

Daily and Monthly achievements — they reset back to zero at the start of each day and month respectively, at midnight UTC (4:00 PM PST/5:00 PM PDT). Aside from Arenanet points, these gain you coins, experience and Mystic Coins upon completion of whole category. There are no titles related to daily or monthly achievements.

Removed: Original post content removed ~ Dalmarus

No where does it say that for half of the world the monthly resets a day early.

No where.

Sorry to interrupt but…

technically it didn’t. People just count “today” as the 24 hour period. People just started saying “a day early” when in fact it was technically hours before or into the next day unless you sit on midnight UTC. People love rounding up or down to suit their needs. Though It also gives time zones which you could easily find out what timezone you were in and calculate it when it changed for you personally.

I found that when I was doing the jumping puzzles back to back for a couple hours to get the acheivments, I started getting motion sickness. The constant camera panning back and forth and quick zoom-ins when near walls when you move the camera didnt go over well with me. Dont know if this was because of fps issues, I was moving the camera too fast or what, but I never got this sensation with other games before.

For jump puzzles I put on free camera so the camera won’t rotate automatically. It helps immensely.

So you’re 80 and you failed at the dungeon.

Dungeon rule one = Dont Standd in Red Circles
Dungeon Rule two = Rez downed players near you
Dungeon Rule three = When defeated don’t be stupid and expect someone to spend 30 seconds whilst being attacked by mobs to rez you. Rez yourself at the WP and run back.

I’d like to add one rule:
Dungeon rule four = don’t go full dps, you need defensive gear and skills to survive

Dungeon Rule 5: Help your teammates if they are out of crowd control by using yours.

My major and only problem with the game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: AndrewWaltfeld.4621

AndrewWaltfeld.4621

Well you basically just described why it’s important to have different roles – variety. And what GW2 has done is severly limiting the possibility of variety a lot by removing the vast majority of roles, forcing everyone to be dps, dps with support flavor or dps with a twist of crowd control.
The whole game is built up to fit the playstyle of being a squishy dps type that jumps and dodges around to avoid getting hit, and strangely enough the thief profession seems to be doing pretty well too.

Not really.. 8 professions each with their own flavor… seems like a load of variety to me. Instead of looking for DPS/Heal/Tank, your looking for guardian, warrior etc. Just the sense of variety is packaged differently. I think you need to shift your perspective a bit and realize that the trinity isn’t coming back anytime in guild wars 2.

Your professions should not define the role you are in. Your job assigned to you by your team leader should. As stated before – because of my engineer build – I can kite like a kitten. So I tend to get the job of keeping veterans busy in the dungeon. Sometimes I volunteer for Add duty as well.

I am thinking because there is a lack of trinity, you feel you don’t know exactly what to do. Guild wars 2 made it extremely easy to determine what your job is – whatever is needed by your dungeon leader. Your build is AoE king? Add duty. Good at kiting and controlling? Secondary Mobs. Lots of toughness/vitality? Boss. etc.

Trading Post: Listing Fee and Selling Fee

in Black Lion Trading Co

AndrewWaltfeld.4621

Yeah, the 5% listing fee and 10% tax are perfectly fine to have in the game. The 10% tax should be made more explicit so people don’t unknowingly lose money, but having it there isn’t a problem.

If you want to make a profit crafting, don’t buy all the materials on the trading post. Problem solved!

ironically, if they posted it openly about the 10% sales tax – people would be ensuring that they would be getting a profit more often. Be less undercutting which could result in crafters actually getting a profit.

AndrewWaltfeld.4621

XelNigma.6315
we have an engineer class that brews magic potions, uses standard military issue hand grenades (as a prime weapon), and a few gadgets designed by Data from the Goonies.
clearly they have no idea how to design a real engineer class. And that is why your grenades out range your rifle, that most of the time thinks its a shotgun…

That’s because the rifle and shotguns were considered separate weapons. At some point in development – they decided to just merge rifles and shotguns together.

Question about grenades

in Engineer

Posted by: AndrewWaltfeld.4621

AndrewWaltfeld.4621

The grenade kit takes skill to use as you have to judge where the enemy will be – not where they currently are. By having the grenades be manually toggled, instead of centered on a target – you allow yourself to hit multiple targets at the same time by your choice.

The developers didn’t want rifles to be the thing for engineers for a long range option. As that kind-of is the warrior thing. So they decided that grenades would be more handily as they are especially useful in WvW.

Engineer Solo play?

My grenade/flamethrower Engineer Build.

Gear – Precision + Power

30/20/0/10/10
- Traits –
Incendiary Powder, Short Fuse, Grenadier
Precise Sights, Napalm Specialist
Invigorating Speed
Speedy Kits

Weapon – Rifle
Healing – Elixir H (Healing turret in Dungeons)
Skill 1 – Elixir B
Skill 2 – Flamethrower
Skill 3 – Grenade Kit
Elite – Mist fire Wolf, Golems or Supply Crate depending upon situation.

I tend to use the mist fire wolf when Soloing. I can solo just fine on my engineer, it’s not very hard. You just want to keep on kiting and keep your enemy off of with you with the #3 Flamethrower, #4 Rifle skill. Freeze grenades + Grenade toolkit (7 nades) is a good opener. Switch to rifle, Net Shot, trigger Incendiary Ammo, over charge shot them back. Switch to flamethrower, use #1 on it, when enemy is close, #3. You can keep on doing this till enemy is dead.

People underestimate grenades because you can toss them just behind you as well if an enemy is following you and more than likely they get hit by all three.

I think the game is dying…..where 2 weeks ago on Sunday night we had 42 ppl in game playing tonight we had 11. I had a good month but until they add a dungeon finder or something like that my time will be limited.

It is slowly dying due to the lack of content once you’ve hit 80. WvW queue times are not a good reason to assume the game is thriving, as such a small amount of people are allowed into each WvW map anyway. Ah well, enjoy the game whilst you can!

actually what’s currently happening is perfectly natural. it’s called life and eventually it does come knocking on your door to drag you away.

Besides there is always a population dip after a MMO launch because people find they don’t like the game or they have to return to their normal routine of work and thus have less time to play.

Actually…whats happening right now is denial…

You can choose what you want to believe. It isn’t denial but rational thought especially in this time of year. They launched literally the week before, on or after school starts in the U.S.A. What did you expect? The primarily market to ignore school for longer than a month?

The time of year has nothing to do with the guilds and players shelving the game because of various issues. Its becoming a far larger issue than just normal population drop.

Also…where do you work where you have a month to take off for games before your job “goes back to normal”.

sighes In the case of schooling. People tend to put your schoolwork for example in order to play more video games. About a month into the semester – your O kitten alarm goes off and you attempt to compensate for your month of slacking. Which means… reduced playing time. As guild wars 2 has gone from < School work.

Example.

No I certainly did not! I played at my own pace with some friends and we got to level 80, explored every zone, sPVP a little bit until we realised it was boring and was a pain as you can’t play with friends (unless lucky enough to be on/swtich to the correct team) and has balancing issues. WvW is terrible as queue times are outrageously long. All in all it leaves us with nothing left to do. We didn’t bother making alts like some people have as just wouldn’t want to go through the same old content again.

ah ok. Understandable. you and your friends are smarter than most then. I didn’t bumrush the content either as after SWTOR, I realized that I was shooting myself in the foot by doing that. There is no point to bumrush to max level – especially a game you want to play long term. Server firsts – someone on energy drinks is just going to kick your kitten there. Very rarely will it be you. There’s very little reason to rush to max level. Afraid not much I can say then to help.

Spectacular Lack of Information

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

AndrewWaltfeld.4621

The wiki actually barely has any more information than the game does. Learning things by trial and error is extremely annoying and a huge waste of time. I am sure some people are eventually going to do it, but I prefer to make my decisions based on information. Half the fun of an MMO to me is mathing out which stats I want compared to what other stats to get my perfect min max build. No one in this game can make any kind of informed choice between one thing or the other when you only have the vaguest idea of what something does but no idea at all how well it does it.

Even Diablo would tell you what % damage reduction 1000 armor would give you, tell you what each stat did exactly in terms of how it affects your damage and life, all the tooltips would explain the number or % of damage done by each ability and even how that ability derived its total damage based on your stats.

This game seems like it was made for 5 year olds.

Then read guides/builds for your profession. As much as I don’t like talking about them the people at gw2guru.com has some very decent guides on classes.

I’m afraid your example says more of that particular player, or type of players, than of the trinity habit

True. but I play engineer.

However – it was just a purest example I could think of that you can tell people were playing in past games with the trinity. I have seen “Healer Engineer LFG” or whatever profession etc in chat as well. Though as stated above, time goes on, less about the roles and more of what profession.

But then I will ask you, what makes it better that you’re advertised as a profession rather than a role? :o

Because frankly, yes it’s technically possible to run thru the dungeons with five of the same professions… but people tend to want an variety group. So they end up choosing the ones that they don’t have already. They may already have two guardians but they don’t want a third for example.

If you have 5 of the same profession, you’ll want to have roles – of course. But most people don’t like stacking more than one or two of the same professions in a group. Unless you want to be silly like one of the last dungeon runs I did which was 4 guardians and an engineer. I looked so out of place with my gear like I was that midget that followed all the humans and norns around.

I understand your points about CC, Kiting and other supports to take the place of a traditional tank… But the problem is the funky camera it’s kinda hard to see where your going when trying to kite.. Especially in the level 40 dungeon when you’re fighting in close quarters… Gotta keep trying I guess

I agree on the camera. I tend to make sure I’m not zoomed out all the way so I don’t clip thru the walls. Sometimes I position the camera so that if it’s a long hallway or cavern – the back of the camera is faced towards the longest so I have space to dodge etc. I also usually have the free camera option on so that my camera stays where it is.

My dungeon runs, we tend to put our boss in a wide open area and ping pong him around. Though the biggest thing I’ve come to realize is that dungeons require a lot of teamwork and communication. Not everything goes according to plan and a lot of it is developing good reactive instincts to the present situation.

Example: First time through Ascalon Catacombs.

We’re fighting the first boss in the center – I accidentally set off the bonus event of the troll. I was informed there was a bonus event – but I didn’t realize I had back flipped into the doors he emerges from. So he emerges. Everyone groans and runs like crazy. The troll follows… then begins tossing ghosts around like rag dolls because we dragged him into the ghosts AoE’s. We end up wiping but we finished killing the boss because the troll killed him. If we didn’t have good reactive instincts, we would have just died and had to deal with the ghost boss resetting but the troll as well.

That’s just to say that just because it’s a well known concept, doesn’t mean that it’s a simple task or a walk in the park, as a lot of people here mockingly state with sly remarks. It simply means that people have an idea of what they should try to be doing, which they evidently don’t in GW2.
Maybe they’re all dumb I guess.

Doubtful they are dumb. They are still learning a game that is played an entirely different way from other games they have played for a decade. It’s like smoking for nearly a decade and then quitting. Very hard to adjust.
