hah, I beat u on my ele like over 9000-0, Elsa The Snow Queen ftwwwwwww whooooo

jk, but I still beat u so that means ur build is bad and u should /uninstall lyfe bro

LOL! Yeah, Ele’s have been giving me issues, but so is pretty much every class. I’m still pretty new to Thief so I’m learning as much as possible with my time in between my full time job working in non profits for youth. I’ve considered uninstalling GW2, but never uninstalling from life. I have way too much purpose for myself and how much I can serve my community and the at risk youth in it to even consider it.

What’s your ele’s name? It’d be fun to duel. :P I like playing Ele as well but I’m awful at it. I tried a warrior and was alright at it, but it’s a warrior. Pretty much the most noob friendly prof on the market right now, but I didn’t like it. Much too passive for my liking.

Hit me up in game sometime and we can build a snowman. Thief – Xyranthion.

I’ve tried playing that build before, and I just get melted by nothing. I could be playing it totally wrong. I’ve been running the balanced build I saw on here: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fZAQNAoaVlsMpxpdPx0J8PNBPBtdBmdA4dDZovbA-TZBFwACOCAFOFAl2foaZAAPAAA

It works pretty well with might stacking with a SB from afar, then when I see someone I pick off that’s less than 50% HP, I just swap to D/P, use my signets and venom, and go in for a quick kill, then GTFO as fast as I can to repeat the process.

You need to get used to the gameplay of “getting melted by nothing,” and play around it. The 2/6/0/0/6 build has been consistent in providing results even at the highest levels of play. Your linked “balanced build,” really hasn’t.

Again, play a build you KNOW can provide results, and so the only variable factor is yourself. If you play a random build that hasn’t “proven” itself so to speak, then you run the risk of not knowing whether a loss was due to your bad decision making/player skill or the choice of build. Reduce variable factors as much as possible.
Just my suggestion.

Agreed

Aiki! I could really use your help, man. I’ve been so frustrated with Thief lately as I die so easily. Can you teach me how to Thief in game? I REALLY want to enjoy the Thief as I don’t really enjoy other classes, aside from Necro, but I really do like how much damage I can dish out with Thief, but I just have such a hard time with clearing condi’s, dodging enemies attacks to stay out of CC (guardians and warriors, oh my!), while doing damage at the same time.

I don’t want to give up, but I could use a hand. My Thief’s name in game is Xyranthion.

Looking for an action-packed profession!

Just don’t play this game unless you’re going to roll an engi, guardian, or warrior. This game is pretty broken.

Warrior considered OP in PVE.

Thieves and eles far outdamage us.
Guardians Mesmers and engis bring far more utility.

Except anyone can sneeze on a thief or ele and kill them. Not like a warrior.

As a thief player myself, I must admit that I didn’t manage to handle the class in the beginning, but after a long and hard time of learning, I finally reached the point where I can effectively beat other players with a unique combo on my d/d thief that takes years of practice to master. From the following lines, that are written as some sort of diary, you can reconstruct my learning process.

1 – 2 – 5: I’m stealthed and confused.

2 – 5 – 1: Kinda nice, but my heartseeker doesn’t do enough damage.

1 – 5 – 2: Wait, the big number from the previous try, where is it?

5 – 2 – 1: Same problem as before.

2 – 1 – 5: Not working either. Man, this class is really hard to play.

5 – 1 – 2: NAILED IT!!!!

I really wish it were that easy. I like the diary style post though. Thanks!

I’d really love some in game help with PvP in general on Thief. I’ve been so frustrated lately with my thief as I can’t seem to kill most classes Mesmer/War/Guardian/Necro/Engi, which make up a large chunk of the profs in SPvP thanks to the current meta. I either build too glassy and die to nothing so quickly that my desired intentions of being high damage aren’t met, or I’m too tanky and don’t do enough damage to contribute to my team much.

Thanks for all the work all of you have been doing for Thieves. As a profession, we’ve been through quite a lot since release.

Just pick one of the meta builds and play them. Straight up.

My suggestion would be
10/30/0/0/30 Trickery, D/P, S/D, or S/P with SB.

If you’re new to tPvP I wouldn’t bother trying to theorycraft anything at all, mostly because you don’t even know the environment you’re trying to theorycraft for. You’re trying to play with too many variables.

Play the tried and tested build (control,) while you learn the meta and how to play in it.

Once you’ve learned the meta, you can then use this information as a control and adjust your build to better fit what you want to do.

The people that complain about thief are just those who are unwilling to learn how to improve and/or counter thief. Look at the ToL that just happened, most teams had a competent thief.

Do you know if there’s a place we can see their builds? I feel like there’s some kind of secret build out there no one has tried yet that will do amazingly well.

I know im Not the first on to say this but ill say it anyways the thief class is on its way to be broken . Since release theif has been getting nerf after nerf after nerf . im Not saying they suck , but unless you are a pro thief its Not that Good .

Nothing wrong with the thief class being that way.

Well, in essence, all profs should be that way, but as it stands, there are some that outshine others and have a very low skill floor. Take warrior for example, so much of that class is passive. They have passive heals, passive condi removal, etc. You don’t need to be a pro to do well while playing that profession.

I like the logic of, “to do well with x profession, you need to be a good player,” but that doesn’t quite seem to be the case for all professions.

It’s actually been a gradual change due to nerfs, we used to excel in 1v1 due to the very high amount of spike damage we used to be able to put out combined with what we have now, but as our skills like Cloak and Dagger have gotten nerfed, thieves have started to slowly migrate toward sustain builds like SD or PD focused on killing by means other than bursting. Other classes though I have to say, are better at this fighting style. Little know that the Ranger was actually supposed to be the best sustained class fun fact, anyway yeah we’ve been pushed into other roles other classes can do better. That’s not to say we suck, specs like DP and SD trickery are very good at 1 on 1 but I reiterate, they used to be better.

I’ve been playing Thief, but recently shelved mine because of this. I might look into a better S/D build, though. What would you recommend for a good S/D build? Also, how do people land a full pistol whip? I feel like I can steal, and try to get one off, but it usually results in someone just dodging away, and making all that initiative go to waste. I do have success when using Basilisk venom, but that’s a one trick pony and I can’t do that all the time. I’d love some advice from better thieves.

Do you precast the pistol whip before stealing? If you don’t then it is understandable why it results in an evade. Time it to where you press 3 an as soon as it’s about to whip steal, if you do that then they should eat the whole thing with no evade.

No, I haven’t actually. I’ll try that out, as I did that with CnD/Steal and it was really effective. When timed right, will it still result in the quick stun from the whip, or just the damage flurry?

Would the best build for this be 2/6/0/0/6 with Ogre/Strength runes and Zerker amulet Air/Strength on both wep sets?

If by “balanced” one means “Effective Power/Effective Health,” that’s a completely different beast.

Are you talking about 0/6/5/3/0 might stacking? It’s an alright build, but again, I feel the damage isn’t there, and the survivability is alright with P/D. I have a hard time keeping people in my BP AoE, though, so I end up using it a lot of the time for HS stealthing. I’d love some advice on how to maximize the benefits of BP and how to keep people in it for longer.

Alright, y’all. Sorry to say, but I’m done with thief for now. I can’t stand being so afraid of pretty much every class that isn’t another thief. I can’t take warriors down, mesmers, engi’s, guardians, etc. I know a lot will just look at this as a QQ post, and that’s ok. There are just too many factors against my rationale for playing it as I no longer enjoy a thief. I gave it my all, and the game is working against me. So be it. I hope your experiences are better than mine. Have fun! ^^;

I feel it. I feel we definitely have options for builds, but as it stands now, to deal sufficient damage to kill someone 1v1 (I know this game isn’t supposed I be 1v1, but thieves end up roaming solo a lot), we need to go pure glass 2/6/0/0/6, or something similar.

It’s like ANet wants Thief to either be so brittle we die to a fart, or just be completely ineffective in the one role that ANet sees fit for us, and that’s always been damage. We’re not too good at support, though I’ve heard tales of a “ninja nurse” build which sounds kind of fun, but our condi build is rubbish compared to other classes, and we can’t bunker well, so that leaves us with a balanced but mostly ineffective build, or a glass dead on sight build.

I’ve also never had so many people chase me across a map before like I do on my thief. I wish I enjoyed other classes half as much as I do Thief. My close second is Necro, but condi Necro can feel pretty brain dead at times and doesn’t require the amount of focus and skill a thief does. Blah. I just want a tiny bit more damage without having to be completely mauled after being stunned or immob’d once, even when I use stun breaks as often as possible with shadowstep and infiltrator’s sig, I still get beat down too fast to react, whereas other professions like Warrior have so many passive defenses and heals in a game that’s supposed to be about active defense, not passive.

The OP doesn’t acknowledge that there are plenty of professions and builds that he will NEVER do enough damage to actually kill, like any decent necro, warrior, engineer or bunk ranger.

Are you talking about WvW? I’ve been finding his build (and my modified version) do pretty good damage. It’s all about stacking might, that’s where the damage comes from. Though, I’ve been having a really hard time against Mesmers, Engi’s, most warriors, and Necro’s, so you have a bit of a point, but with a build more like 6/6/0/0/2 I feel like I die so fast that it’s pretty much even. The kill window is so small, and if I can’t take it due to AoE’s, or condi’s flying about like they tend to do, I just fall short.

Hrmph, I dunno. Suggestions? I’m speaking on an Spvp standpoint, by the way.

I’ve read through a few pages of this topic and it’s quite stimulating. I definitely feel that if ANet would talk to us more that the community wouldn’t be as toxic toward them, and each other.

A prime example is The Secret World. That game isn’t in the best of conditions, and it has a small playerbase. Although the game isn’t bug free by any extent or very well balanced at all, the admins communicate with the playerbase quite regularly and it creates an open and friendly environment in a game that needs MANY improvements.

If in fact admins need to have all their posts approved before they can post, then that’s a shame. That rule is crippling. I would hate to be on a team of people that I’d have to get my messages approved by my manager before I can even talk about something upsetting the community.

To change the community, we have to change their stifling rules.

Since the patch, I’ve been trying different classes to see how they feel. I used to play Necro back when they were infamous for being underpowered. After trying them again, they’re extremely strong. Might stacking and condi’s add up really quickly and I melt people easily. On my necro, thieves are free kills. I don’t enjoy playing my necro anymore. They used to be challenging to play.

I made a warrior, but got bored so quickly. I had to wipe drool from my mouth a couple times because of how brain dead that class is.

I made a thief after having deleted one I made ages ago when they were so OP that you could just heart seeker spam to glory, which was the entire reason I deleted him in the first place. After giving them a second try, I fell in love. I was extremely frustrated the whole time in PvP, and I still get really frustrated when 1v1’ing the sparring AI in the Mists as I die to them often (especially the engi and guardian), but after playing mine for a while (D/P + SB), I love it! So many combo’s and thinking on my toes and having to dodge effectively whenever possible.

Thief takes a brain to play now, and again I’m happy.

D/P trickery is FAR from a one-trick-pony – which is the exact reason why it’s the only spec on thief I don’t consider boring.

Other than 6 in trickery, what other trait lines would be good to invest in? I’ve been using a D/P+SB signet/might stacking build that does some good damage and some nice survivability. What would you suggest?

EDIT: I haven’t made a lot of my own builds, but this is what I quickly came up with when inspired by your post. What changes would you make?

This thread is referring to sPvP. The build you posted is absolutely useless in sPvP.

Anyway, even for WvW, your damage is pitiful. You wont be doing any damage and you would still melt to conditions. Toughness is too high.

EDIT: the build Chicago Jack is referring to is this one: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fZAQNAoaVl0Mp7pVOx0J8PNBNhsNR8O83yaFA-T5AFwACeCAVLDA4EAAA
The things that are not filled can be choosen among these:
Runes: Either Lyssa, Ogre, Scholar or Strength
Critical Strikes traits: pick 2 between I, II, III, VI, VIII
Heal: can be either Hide in Shadows or Withdraw.
Second Sigil on Shortbow: really anything can fit.

Personally, the build I use in sPvP is this one:

This was one thing that bugged me about PvP. I wanted to have my time spent in the mists actually be dragged over into the PvE realm in some form or another to make it feel a little more connected.

Mind you all, I really like how there’s a definite disconnect in this game between PvP and PvE to ensure that one doesn’t effect the other in bad ways, because I’ve played games where that scenario does in fact happen, and very often. cough WoW cough. Sorry, been feeling under the weather lately. Seeing my efforts in PvP effect my character in the PvE realm makes me very happy and is making me come back to the game. Thank you devs!

It could be years, or never.

I’m with you on this one. What ANet said they’d deliver obviously wasn’t true, and everyone who hasn’t moved on to other games, or gone back to the game from where they were they left, are just going to have to sit around and do content with broken classes, AI’s, and design flaws that’d be easy to change, but ANet is far too lazy to do anything about it.

I left WoW in hopes that GW2 was going to be better. As far as my opinion goes, I’d rather play WoW, and still do, than GW2. I really want to love this game. I enjoyed it for a time, but due to the huge imbalances and bugs, which are probably never going to be taken care of, this game is unlovable as far as I go.

Please fix your game so I can love it again.

OP here!

I highly appreciate all the well thought out responses that my query has reaped.

This goes to show me that I shouldn’t try to play this game too often, or mostly, at all.

I agree mostly with Ackinbal. I have a full time job coupled with artistic hobbies and playing a game like this very often for long periods of time seems silly, as like most of you pointed out, it’s supposed to be about the fun factor and not the progression factor.

It could very well be a good thing that one can be as casual as they want with an MMO, and still feel good about it.

The only thing stopping me from playing GW2 as of late are all the bugs. The only professions I find interesting (on a personal level, not speaking for the general populous) are the Elementalist, and Necromancer.

As I’m sure some of you may know, both of those classes aren’t in the best of states yet, and I’m also sure that will change…In time. That time hasn’t come yet, and when it does, I’m sure I’d be more than happy to experiment with builds, and try on this “fun” shoe, but because this game in many ways feels incomplete, I’ll commit myself more to physical hobbies that I can actually go somewhere in life with, and not sit on my computer.

The one thing that GW2 PvP has taught me: Pursue real world hobbies that make my existence meaningful and not substitute physical interaction with that of virtual.

Thank you ANet for helping me grow as a person. +1

And you know what Anet, I realize that you’re trying to get other bugs out of the way before focusing on profession specific bugs, but you are LITERALLY pushing your customers away when we are the ones that you should be focusing on, but yet, we’re ignored because there’s some design flaw in how the environment works or any other X, Y, Z bug that doesn’t have to do with a profession.

I just feel like Anet is being a procrastinating college kid on an intricate class project. They’re focusing more on what is indirectly effecting us before focusing on what is directly effecting the player, and that is profession dynamics, and bugs.

I could honestly not care about bugs with loading screens, etc, if what I’m going to be playing once that loading screen is over, is complete/mostly garbage.

That is all.

So ever since I started playing GW2, I love PvP, but I’ve found myself wondering, “What the KITTEN is the point?”

As it stands now, there seems to be no real reward and progression made when you “win” a PvP match. What are you winning, really?

Glory, rank, and chests.

Cool, so I get a higher rank. Cool, I get glory which is used to unlock new items, and I get chests with new stuff in it? Sounds nice.

One catch, what the kitten is glory even used for? Oh? Unlocking new gear you say?

Well what’s so special about this new gear? Nothing?! It has the same stats as my old gear?!

So let me ask the forum this question. What’s the point of it all?

Anomaly.7612

So I see that some people are saying:
“Lol! You complain that you need fixez, they fix, you cry? KITTENZ!”

Ok, so I think the main issue here isn’t that, “is this working as intended or what? Wtf?” (this is definitely a part of the issue, but not entirely) but the main issue here goes to the team responsible for fixing it in the first place. Here is my question to that team:

If you saw that it needed to be fixed, why did you half-kitten it? You saw that, ok, it’s not working as intended and here’s why, but yet you only fix PART of the BIGGER issue?

I don’t think we need to remind you that the real fix that we needed was that this signet wasn’t contributing to the team you’re on what so ever.

You took an already broken utility, and made it useless. So now I can’t remove the stun if not I’m targeting the enemy? Ok, that’s fine, I need to have a target in order to pass off my condi’s from myself to my enemy, makes sense, but it STILL ISN’T WORKING when it comes to taking condi’s off of teammates, and that is the root of the issue which has yet to be addressed.

The problem still remains that condi’s are extremely easy to remove (some classes don’t even have to DO anything for their passives to cleanse themselves in seconds) and have no drawback to removing them.

I hate to bring up “The Game That Must Not Be Named,” buuuuuuuut, in WoW, removing harmful spells from a player would result in a large loss in mana, as the spell would consume a lot, and depending on what was being cleansed, could have negative ramifications on the cleanser, e.g. receiving a “silence” debuff for cleansing off a harmful damage over time spell.

This would help a lot as well, especially in 1v1 scenarios, which like it or not, based on this being a “team” game, happens very often.

And don’t you guys find it really stupid that our attunements base CD is 15 second and weapon swapping is a base 10? We are literally at a disadvantage from then on.

I feel this is Anet’s way of making us switch between multiple attunements to do our job right, but here’s the kicker (just as Crow stated): Our traits have very poor synergy when you dump 30 into one trait line, to then have those bonuses from the traits be unusable the second you swap to a differing attunement, so it’s quite baffling that they’d make a profession built on the idea of swapping multiple times, but to have them be useless for about half the time they’re alive, granted they spent 30 points in one trait line, and 30 in another, or 20/10, etc.

Having traits in each tree that have generalized bonuses would be very beneficial to our profession. Even the concept of mastering an element, having 30 points in one trait line, would be interesting. For example: (using some names Crow used in the post he linked)

Pyromancer: Master of fire attunement. When attuned to fire, your traits in the fire tree have extra bonus effects, and when attuned to a differing element, the trait bonuses change, making them more generalized, but still keeping bonuses comparable, but not AS good as when in fire, your mastered element.

I think this would be an interesting and beneficial change to see happen.

How Do People Feel Today About Condi?

Signet of Spite is trash for PvP. At least with Plague Signet, you can send your own condi’s onto others.

The only issue with condi’s that I feel is exactly what some are addressing in this thread: They are too easily removed.

I want to know what jerk designed a profession around one viable build that is so easily trolled by every other class.

It seems like a huge design flaw that you can spend so much time putting condi’s on your target and other targets, only to have them naturally fall off in a few seconds, or have them wiped clean almost instantaneously.

There are two options with this issue:
1. Make condi’s easier to apply, and faster (this would probably make condi’s OP)
2. Give the Necro (as we are the prof that is supposed to focus on condi’s more than others) an ability/trait that doesn’t allow their condi’s to be wiped off for a given amount of time, or have severe penalties that will further degrade the enemy player, and also buff the Necro, for wiping them off.

Point being: it’s way too easy to stop conditions from having a real effect and dealing a viable and competitive amount of DPS in PvP (PvE it’s a bit better but c’mon).

Ok, so I agree on most of your points, besides:

You guys really dont see the bigger picture.

My suggestion for Anet is really simple, dont bring the elementalist up in terms of damage and survive; bring everyone else down.

My thoughts: Ele’s do in fact need to be brought up to a higher point than where they are right now. Do I think that EVERY prof needs to be brought down to make ele’s viable? Definitely not.

Why?
Because not every other profession out there is at a level that is considered “OP” from an Ele perspective. Here’s one example: Necro’s. Necro’s have it just as bad, if not worse, than Ele’s. Hell, at least most of your skills WORK properly.

Classes that obviously need to be brought down a peg or 5. (Experiential judgement)
-Thief
-Warrior
-Ranger

See the trend? All burst damage classes. If you fix the ones that are causing issues when it comes to fights ending in a flash, then fights will be extended, but still very enthralling, and you will still have to be an efficient keyboard jockey to win, because that’s the play style of an Ele, quickly switching between elements to meet the needs of what is happening in the fight on a second by second basis, and that’s what makes this profession astoundingly fun, but also difficult.

Giving Necros Hope

Plague Signet:
-Doesn’t take condi’s off allies, but still gives them to you.
-Breaks stun

Ok, so sure, it doesn’t have the utility of cleansing your team, but that’s ANet’s fault, which I’m sure they’ll make right.

Although there’s that bug, it can still be used to transfer all your condi’s from yourself to your enemy, then use epidemic to spread everything.

It still works as a stun break.

Salutations fellow plague spreaders!

I hear your woes and disdains, and a lot of them hold the weight of truth, but there is hope!

And it comes in the personified form of one gamer named, Ex Force.

He’s a true necromancer and plays in many competitive tournaments, as well as playing other classes, and has a true feel for this class.

His youtube page, housing all the builds, can be found here:
http://www.guildhead.com/skill-calc#ccVcz9mmLnwMmLnwM0xxa0MkqMVkz

His most up to date conditionmancer build can be found here:

He addresses the fact that some skills are broken, making Necro’s a less favorable class for some, but I’ve been using his newest build that incorporates the Shaman jewel, and it’s proved very handy with staying alive long enough to watch your entropic grasp around your enemy’s throat quench the light in their eyes.

Hope this helps!

Keep up the good work, Grenth approves.

This idea seems so extraordinarily obvious to be implemented into a modern MMO such as this, that it shouldn’t need to be expressed.

But it does since it hasn’t happened, grr!

Bumping as this would be good for everyone.

What I read that, upon reading, made me stop immediately.

“So I haven’t done tpvp only spvp(limited), wvw, pve, and dungeons, so I haven’t felt Necromancers to be underpowered but I don’t know much about other classes either.”

Please, for the sake of the Necro community, if you’re going to post about our numbers vs (insert profession here), have a working and experiential knowledge of how we stack up in PvP with various builds, and that of other classes.

It’d help you, and the rest of us. Thanks.

Necro’s toss kittens at the moment, and hopefully ANet fixes that soon. The class dynamics are amazing and sound fun, but the numbers just aren’t there right now, and the small amount of people still playing Necro’s can attest to this.

Is it just me or does scepter's autoattack not scale?

To be honest, it seems like you’re just experiencing how Necro’s (even after the patch) are still broken as a class.

If you’re focus is bleed damage, that’s great. Just know that the damage scaling is pitiful.

Even if you do a power build on a Necro, it’s still not that powerful, and attempting so will result in lots of hair falling to the ground as you scream at your screen when a thief, ranger, warrior, or even guardian, press you amongst their toes in seconds.

Point being, Necro’s need a lot of love, and we’ve yet to get it.
