I preferred the original battle where players could choose to zerg or to divide their numbers. Not this forced mechanic of 50 people max per boss.

Let players play how they want to play again instead of putting artificial blockades and restrictions that only serve to reduce our fun.

Six Minutes to Knightfall still bugged

Killing knights in 15 minutes is perfectly doable but killing them in 6 minutes is too much. Remember that before 6/3 patch if you grabbed the attunement you were able to deal twice as much damage. Now you deal 0 dmg or about 30-40% of your normal damage. According to really fast calculations, knights have about 7,500 toughness which means 65% damage reduction.

Yeah, it would explain why my attacks seem to do ~50% less and why most overflows seem unable to kill all three knights within 15 minutes. Before the patch we either had unattuned people dealing normal damage and attuned people dealing twice that much. Yet now the attuned people are dealing normal damage and nonattuned people deal 0 (and scale the boss).

Eliminating the health bars of the other knights in the UI to ‘avoid confusion’ has made the battle a little less epic feeling.

There was an awkward period of time after we killed our knight where everyone just stood around waiting…and waiting…and wondering how the battle was going. Sort of anti-climactic not being able to see the progress of the other knights during the battle.

Oh well, otherwise things seemed to work out.

I fully agree with you regarding the health bars. We should have been able to see the progress of the other two teams instead of just standing around like gaping fish and typing ‘green %?’ in chat.

So to me it sounds more like they just pulled it out because they couldn’t get it fixed in time.

Anyone fight the Knights after this recent patch? If so, do you still feel like you’re only doing ~50% of the damage you originally did? Any servers/overflows feel that killing them in under 6 minutes is actually possible now?

Reason I ask is that after the initial ‘fix’ (prior to this patch) all the attempts I was present (including one structured attempt on my own server) fell short by a very large margin.

Regarding the In Tune achievement,

After the latest patch I decided to give the event another go. I wasn’t able to get this until I switched from my mesmer main to a warrior alt using a rifle. Then it was quite easy, my first attempt with warrior was a success. I’d been trying for days with my mesmer main and I stand by my opinion that the design of this achievement isn’t taking into consideration the core mechanics of half the professions.

Did you have to damage each of three holograms that pop at 10% and the final hologram, or just the 1st phase hologram?

I only did phase 1 on my rifle warrior with autoattack off so I could control every ability. As soon as phase 2 started I stopped and just started rezzing people for the remainder of the event. It didn’t feel right for me to just afk at the door, so I hope that by rezzing downed players I still contributed something to the group.

Still, it’s a shame when achievements basically force you to go (Eric Cartman voice) ‘screw you guys, I’m going home’

Increasing the Knight’s toughness so all our attacks only do 50% of our damage pre-patch isn’t helping matters either; nor is the bug where Menders heal the Blue Knight back to full if they manage to reach it.

200? I sincerely hope that this is a typo and you meant 300. Otherwise you are suggesting a nerf to longbow range and I think we’ve been nerfed quite enough already in my opinion.

Here’s my suggestion instead:

Eagle Eye – Include shortbow. Provides +300 range and +5% damage on longbow, shortbow and harpoon gun.

There, now it’s good. Give us back the ‘unparalleled archer’ please!

Some suggestions because things are still not working as they should.

  • Cap boss scaling at 50. Currently they have no cap and keep scaling if more than 50 players are present.
  • Fix Menders so they don’t heal Blue Knight to full in an instant if they manage to get to it.
  • Review your balance changes as everyone suddenly deals ~50% less damage compared to before this patch!
  • Give the reward chest to everyone who participated in the boss battle. Now only those that actually kill their knight get a single chest while the others (usually at green) get nothing!
  • Give 1 reward chest for each knight defeated, so if all 3 knights are defeated every participant will get 3 chests and 3 chances at a core!

  • This achievement is also a tricky one, I would recommend you disable your auto attack so that you are precisely controlling when you hit the holograms. Necros, Rangers, Mesmers; watch your minions, pets, clones, and phantasms, their damage counts against you if you are not attuned. Engineers, your turrets fall under that category as well. For all professions, I would recommend crafting your build based solely on damage your character does and not use any summons or sources of outside damage. Really? Check out what those F1-4 keys do.

Yes, the F1-4 jay makes you clones explode, making AOE damage, which means they can hit an enemy with the wrong attunement. Doesn’t seem to solve anything.

This may not be the answer you’re looking for as you may only have one character, but I just brought a warrior with a rifle. No minions, illusions, pets, turrets or attacks that hit multiple targets to worry about and with autoattack switched off you can decide when to do damage (which is still pretty significant with Kill Shot) and when to stop and look for attunement circles

The one thing you do have to worry about are those annoying invulnerable mobs swarming around all over the place during phase 2.

Still wondering if it’s just a skin or if it actually has different audio and visual effects though.

Can’t speak to any specific visual effects other than just looking pretty by combining the aesthetics of all the Scarlet alliances.

That said, it does have a unique firing sound. I’d describe the shot as being deeper and with this hallow energy noise. Then it has a gear grinding and ratchet reload noise. It is subtle, and not overt like the Predator or Quip.

Just overnight the prices on those shot up from 30-50g to 80-130g! Usually prices drop during an event and only start to rise after the event. So there seems to be something wierd going on.

Last scarlet I did an hour ago dropped the Rainbow, so… just rumour, I’d think. They… they put it on a warrior ;_; ~engie tears~

Ah, alright. Might have been the TP-flippers buying them all up and hoping for the next generation Greatsaw then or something.

I think that when you guys fix the no-loot issues, the knights should just drop 1 Core all the time. It’s hard enough as-is to get 10 cores of 1 color with them having a chance to drop, especially when we’ve been having inconsistent (or no) loot as well ever since this event started.

I have 5 characters with the back item, but there’s no way I can manage to get even 10 cores or any single color unless I pay lots of gold to TP-flippers (and I refuse to do that).

Q: I don’t get loot from knights, (insert QQ)….

A: Have your zerg think BGR is the best sequence, hit the boss as soon as it pops to ensure dip, do as much damage as possible for the rest of the blue fight. Skip Green(not profitable). Go immediately to Red after Blue, have first dip, survive until zerg come, do damage as much as possible.

For losing Green power core, you’ll gain blue and red.

*My strategy tackles on the limitation of the amount of players each bosses can be tagged to, thus the loots distribution.
*This is not an exploit since a 3-bosses event can be done in 7 ways, namely:
(order is not important)
Fight all 3: 3nCr3 = 1 way
Fight 2 (while others fight the 3rd): 3nCr2 = 3 ways
Fight 1: 3nCr1 = 3 ways

Better strategy, ANet fix the tag limit/change the event to three separate events that are linked. If you get rewarded for one you get the rewards, You get final rewards based on the number of champions you defeat, maybe. Or you just get it if all three are defeated and you participated in at least one.

Then everyone gets everything they earned instead of potentially nothing.

Best way for ANet to fix this is to give each player a personal bouncy-chest for each participation medal; just like the little chests that pop up on the right of the screen for killing worldbosses. That way everyone gets the loot.

This is exactly what I was thinking, yes.

Yeah, I have no idea why they did not implement that in the first place. Having a personal bouncy-chest for each Knight you get the participation medal for would be so much better.

Scarlet Stomp is extremely annoying

Yesterday I tried and failed numerous times no matter what I did. Yet today I suddenly managed to stomp Scarlet extremely easy on two characters. Here’s what I did:

Staff Elementalist:
1. Pop Windborne Speed on Air-staff
2. Pop Armor of Earth (while running up to Scarlet)
3. Pop Arcane Shield (almost at Scarlet) <- May be redundant with Armor of Earth
4. Start Stomp
5. Pop Mist Form
6. Get achievement without any problem as she can’t grab you

Engineer:
1. Pop Elixir B for swiftness (while running up to Scarlet)
2. Pop Elixir U for quickness (at Scarlet)
3. Start stomp
4. Pop Elixir S for invulnerability
5. Done

This game would have been better off if the Thief class had never existed. Stealth in and of itself is inherently broken in most MMOs and giving one class access to a dynamic initiative system while keeping all others on a static cooldown system was a recipe for disaster.

Heh heh, yeah. I still believe the problems originated with the implementation of stealth in general as well as giving one class a dynamic initiative system while all other classes are on a static cooldown system.

Fast forward to this game I believe that it may still be salvaged if the initiative system would be used for stealth-on-F2 (where more initiative allows for longer stealth duration like an actual class mechanic) and then adding cooldowns to all the weapon skills; just like all the other classes.

Knights aren't dropping loot [Resolved]

ANet should fix this by either changing it so it spawns a big worldboss chest or give us a personal bouncy-chest for each boss we get a participation medal for.

After all these bosses I fought I only have 2-1-1 cores and that was with the 1-3 lootbug. Now after the latest patch I don’t get any loot at all!

Those regular champion bosses give loot all the time, so why are these Assault Knights so bugged?

The drop of the Rifles is broken. They dont rly drop anymore.
Thats why the price explode and i hope they will fix it asap.

That really sucks if this is the case. Earlier today I saw in chat that those Assault Knights also don’t drop loot anymore. Not sure if this is true (due to their already bugged drops) but I didn’t get any loot from the 2 Knights I fought earlier.

And I’m an AlwaysCrit Warrior with a Rifle and half the group died from the first pull, so getting a ‘first dibs’ tag and dps wasn’t the issue for me.

But it does seem to be the case that last patch completely botched up something. Last night (at 2am GMT+1) I checked the TP and the prices were around 30g for the hologram and 50g for the regular rifle. But when I checked the next day (at 4pm GMT+1) the prices have shot up to 70-110g!

Golem Suit should last until destroyed (or left unattended for 30s). And when destroyed it should open the hatch with you jumping out at 25% health or something (like in that early 1v1 video)!

All the other summons (racial, utilities and elites) should also function more like Necro minions. Summon and they stay until destroyed.

I’d love to run around on my Sylvari Ranger with my own Sylvan Hound pet and Sylvan Hound elite (and a Sylvan Pup Mini if ANet finally gets around to it!! HINT!!)

Add Stealth to F2 (with a cooldown) and have it use up initiative when active. More initiative = longer stealth on F2.

Now add cooldowns to weapons like all the other classes and you won’t be able to use initiative to spam skills, but instead you use initiative to stealth. Might also require some balancing on the other stealth utilities to reflect this new stealth as class mechanic.

Assisted in killing all three knights, but only got loot for one. Getting no loot seems to be more frequent than getting loot at the moment.

Couldn’t ANet just spawn a dragon chest for each boss? At least then everyone who participated could loot it.

EDIT: Assisted in killing all three knights the next run and all of a sudden I got loot for all three knights; even though I arrived late at the first (he was already at 30% before I started attacking).

Tried it on my engineer with Elixir S, but even then her little pinball-bubble apparently forces me away from her.

Seems he spawns around a lot and only stays at any given spot for a brief period of time. So all you can basically do is just mindlessly camp a known location and hope he spawns within 60 minutes. >_<

To clear the air about pets, lets collate:

What’s negative about the pet:

  • Offers no benefit to certain playstyles

I don’t see this as a negative or a positive. It will be a negative thing if it is an impediment to certain playstyles.

I don’t see the Mesmer shatter mechanic as negative if you decide to go for a phantasm-heavy build. You just simply don’t benefit it as much than if you had gone Shatter or Lockdown.

For instance, if you had gone the beastmaster route, and your pet dies too easily, makes no real threat before it’s dead, then it’s a hindrance. In which case, it will be a negative thing.

Maybe he meant something along the lines of pets having literally no value in large-scale WvW.

Any of the devs played WoW (up until WotLK)? Hunter pets in that game seemed to behave pretty decently and I loved playing a Beastmaster there. So what did Blizzard do that ANet can’t do as well? Numerous suggestions have already been provided, so a little indepth feedback on how you guys want to proceed would be highly appreciated.

From my perspective, the main 2 things to work on are:

  • Ability to hit moving targets
  • Resistance to AoE

The instant F2 is nice, but that was the easy 5 minute fix. Now we’d like to hear more about the actual changes to pet AI and reliability.

I’ve been wondering about that as well; that game is like ten years old now and they managed to make pets work.

I’m not familiar with programming, but I don’t see how an older game like WoW could manage something like that while GW2 can’t.

Well the reason that WoW pets work is because they take reduced AoE damage and have since forever, plus the way their game is built allows for squishier creatures that can take some hits because there is both little to no chance of them pulling aggro (unless you’re stupid) and because it has healers. That and WoW is much less mobile, so not being able to hit isn’t an issue at all.

You are correct about the aggro (with pets you would just deactivate the Taunt) and their innate resistance to AoE (75% I believe it was) but I am not too sure about mobility. Fights in Wintergrasp PvP were pretty mobile from what I recall. Yet my pet had no trouble sticking on a target and slashing them to pieces if opponents did not bother to respond.

But that’s why I listed the two bullet-points as I believe they are two of the key aspects why WoW pets worked and GW2 pets don’t.

Giving pets AoE resistance is apparently possible as I recall the devs stating they did tests with it in dungeons a long time ago. Reliably hitting targets seems to be keyed to movement speed and animations and people apparently reported an increased chance to hit with Agility Training.

So if ‘Agility Training’ would be removed as a trait and given to pets by default, pet animations set up to perform faster and an innate resistance to AoE I think we’d be on our way to finally have pets that would be able to reliably hit their targets and not die in a heartbeat from random AoE.

Then all we’d need in addition is for pets to have their own dodge mechanic and the AI to dodge highly telegraphed attacks when able.

We have also been discussing this internally and agree that it is awkward to be forced to take a trait in order to receive the active effects of signets. Obviously some balance work would need to be done on the signets as well as redesigning the trait. Definitely a good idea and something we are thinking about. =)

That’s good to hear that you guys agree that it is indeed rather awkward when Rangers are the only class that required a 30point investment for their signets to work properly.

Changing signets so their active effect will always apply to both Ranger and Pet would validate their (sometimes insane) cooldowns. Naturally some actives would require modifications as it would be pretty daft when Signet of Renewal would basically kill yourself and your pet (maybe change the active so it cleanses 3 conditions and maybe add some regeneration?).

However, please do not fiddle too much with the other actives as they seem to be in a pretty decent spot considering their cooldowns. It was the 30pt GM trait requirement that was throwing things out of whack in my humble opinion.

As a suggestion you could change ‘Signet of the Beastmaster’ to function like Written in Stone which would make it a worthy Grandmaster trait in my opinion.

Or you could opt to remove the the trait entirely in favor of a new GM trait that is more befitting the Marksmanship tree and reserve the name ‘Signet of the Beastmaster’ for when you want to make an Elite signet or something.

For a game built around doing as much damage as possible as fast as possible in numerous encounters from PVE to Dungeons sustained is not perferrable.

Oh, and every class has “sustained damage” it is called “auto-attack” ….

however we can both agree that some professions suck harder at it then others.
Rangers got high AA DPS, with very fast attack speed. Coupled with pet (if you trust it to hit anything) and you get close to the same DPS as some of the other professions bursts do.

Except you don’t… full ranger rotation + 100% pet uptime yields about the same DPS as what other class’ sustained is capable of. And this is with sword, not a ranged weapon.

Now that said, if you actually compare the Ranger’s ranged weapons to those of other classes ranged weapons, your argument is correct. A ranger + pet is able to do more single target damage than another class’ (Warrior in this case) longbow rotation. Of course theirs is almost entirely AE and we’re not talking about a significant advantage for single target in favor of the Ranger either.

However you should not do ANY “rotation” with the LB as the LB AA at 0 range already has better DPS then rapid fire, simply from coefficient being way better.
Rapid Fire has 0.38/shot and the lowest coefficient for the AA is 0.5 at 0-500 range. Rapid Fire is bound by the same limits as AA regarding projectile speed and travel time, so yes, the DPS is less.

LB max DPS = NO rotation what so ever unless you activate RaO and want to stack might on pets, in which case you should switch to Warhorn, use WH4 and swap back ASAP.

That was true before Rapid Fire was changed to include vulnerability. Unless the target already has 25 stacks of vuln, rapid fire is a DPS increase because the vulnerability also affects you auto attack damage.

The only downside however is that with the patch on July 23 2013 the vulnerability shifted to Rapid Fire and you only get 1 stack per arrow. So you have to land a full channel to get 10 stacks compared to the old setups where you could get 10 stacks instantly with Hunter’s Shot and being able to do Rapid Fire afterwards.

So during that patch they effectively reduced our DPS potential and forced us even more into AA.

IMO, the discussion on pets is becoming overcomplicated. Why not just redistribute the power, fix the F2 timing, and keep them as-is? The pet is not the problem if you swap it, its the pet hitting things that is a problem.

Also I am not super happy with the idea of stow buffs and even less happy with a perma stow. The pet is part of me as a Ranger, it is one of the core things of the class.

You may not be happy about permastowing. I would be absolutely. Furthermore, if you could stow your pet, you could still use it like you are used to. And people like me, who don’t want to rely on the pet can stow it. Simple as that.

As Orca pointed out, some people aren’t as fond of the pets. The idea of the buff would be to appease everyone. Also, what if stowing the pet and having an aspect gave the Ranger some kind of aura that communicated to others they are in that “aspect”? Would it still feel like the pet was a part of you if them being stowed affected your physical appearance?

If not, I don’t think the aspect idea would be a necessity for players. There are definitely things that need to be done to fix Ranger pets in general, and it’s something we are well aware of. If we fixed those things, but maybe also added in the aspect idea, I think we’d be in a spot where everyone would be pleased, no?

Some additional musing from me in response to your musing

What if this aura could be linked to the Passive setting? When on Passive the pet could then become immune to damage and radiates its aura.

That way the Ranger will still have their pet with them, but it would not die from random AoE nor will it put the Ranger in combat if it gets hit. But it is still a part of the Ranger and gives a meaningful reason as to why the aura is there.

Effectively you would also no longer need the Stow mechanic then as the Passive Aura will function as the new ‘Stow’ and the Ranger will always run around with a faithful companion.

I always thought it kinda daft to ‘stow’ a pet. Does the Ranger put it in a sack or something?

No idea what happened to the ranger profession in GW2. It was very promising. I myself have 3 maxed out rangers, which serve me in PvE and PvP. Although I’ve always played a ranger class in MMOs, I feel it has become somewhat misunderstood here. Just like you said, the philosophy has shifted from a nature driven master of bow with a pet companion to something… broken.
Hope this thread will have it fixed in the nearest future.

Indeed, that’s why I’d like to know why Ranger is suddenly designated as ‘resilient skirmisher’ instead of ‘unparalleled archers’.

To me the original philosophy captured the Ranger perfectly; whereas this new philosophy feels like a catch-all that could apply to any class by just changing out 3 words.

Game Mode: PvE+WvW

  • Pets need to become a lot more reliable. The best way to achieve this is to split the Juvenile Pets from the NPC Animal group. Make them a separate group so any change there will not affect the whole animal kingdom of Tyria.
  • Pets need innate resistance to random AoE (75%) with a trait in BM to go up to 95%.
  • Pets need better pathfinding (if possible) and faster animations.
  • Pets need to hit more reliably. Suggestions: larger radius, cleave, attack while moving.
  • Pets need to have gap-closers like leap, pounce, swoop etc.
  • Pet leash range needs to be increased a bit (3000).
  • Pets need to be right next to you when you are standing still, not 30 feet away from you (and dying in random AoE’s because of it).
  • Pets need to have their own dodge bar with parameters when to use them.
  • Pet F2 needs to fire the moment I press the button; not 3-6s later (if it works at all).
  • Pet scaling. Pets need to get stat bonuses depending on your gear. Now the ascended power creep sets in but pets never grow with the new stats.
  • Consideration: Removal of the pet swap mechanic (and traits revolving around swapping pets like Loud Whistle). Instead Rangers could focus around choosing only one pet and F4 can then be changed to function as a Revive Pet channeled ability. That way a defeated pet can be brought back into the fight, instead of punishing the Ranger with a 60s CD because the pet died in a heartbeat due to nonexistent AI.
  • A trait in BM which allows Pets to radiate an aura offering a bonus to allies depending on the pet family (like Toughness aura when using a Bear).
  • Add more pets for Rangers to tame (like Dolphins, Rock Dogs, Wind Riders etc.)
  • Trait lines need work. For instance Trap traits need to go in Wilderness Survival and traits like Martial Mastery should go in Skirmishing.
  • Too many weak traits only affecting pets!
  • Signet actives need to affect both Ranger and Pet by default!
  • With the above change Signet of the Beastmaster can become: “Retain passive effects of signets when activating them”
  • Shouts should have been an AI mode, not a utility. The effects are not meaningful enough to be worth a utility slot. S&R for instance is a useless shout as it is prone to fail at random. Other shouts also offer only minimal effects.
  • Rangers would be perfect for anti-stealth Counter Play. As such I suggest a Trap that works like the WvW Stealth Disruptor Trap (but on a smaller scale) to flush out stealthed opponents. Easy to implement as the mechanics are already available.
  • Rangers need more abilities that benefit his allies. Currently Rangers are shunned everywhere because they offer nothing to the team that another class can’t do much better. We need to see ‘LF1M Ranger’ some day. Suggestions: Shouts with AoE benefits and Spirits that offer their boons all the time (not 35-70% of the time). Guardian shouts and Warrior shouts+banners are much more useful because Ranger Shouts only affect the pet and Spirits are just not reliable and die too easily.
  • Arrows should pierce by default. We’re unparalelled archers and such, but we don’t feel like it atm. Heck, Warrior and Thief are more useful with a bow than Rangers at present time. Rangers should have been the ones with abilities like double shot and AoE effect arrows.
  • Arrows should fly faster. The projectiles are still moving too slow and can easily miss a target with a simple sidestep. This is extremely noticeable on the LB.
  • Change Eagle Eye trait to include SB range increase to 1200.
  • Change Signet of the Hunt active. Suggestion, have it give Camouflage and Swiftness (like Wintersday Scout ability). That way Rangers can choose to use the Camouflage for an attack preparation (or to try and hide briefly); or use the Swiftness to try and gain/cover distance.
  • Change the ‘Animal Cruelty’ utilities and traits that sacrifice/torment your pet. The Ranger is a class that has to rely on his animal companion for ~30% damage. But what I find odd about that is that the Ranger is also the only class that actively tries to kill his own pet all the time through his own utilities and traits!

Some quick suggestions to stop ‘Animal Cruelty’:

  1. Shared Anquish – Change to “Incoming disabling conditions are transferred to your Foe instead.”
    Alternate suggestion: “Incoming disabling conditions Entangle your Foe.”
  2. Empathic Bond – Change to “Periodically cure conditions from you and your pet.
  3. “Protect Me” – Change this to tranfer and block incoming damage (a la Shield Stance) for the duration.
  4. Signet of Renewal Active – Change to “Cure conditions from yourself, your pet and nearby allies”

I think the main issue is more because of the requirement of 100 Bolt of Silk vs 50 Thick Leather. Both should have been 50, then the Damask would also be more in line with the others in terms of value (albeit still a bit on the higher spectrum).

Too late now, but a possible solution might be that for people to be awarded such rewards they would need to participate. In this case they would at least need to encourage some survivors before it hits 100-300-600-900-1200. This would ensure that people who just afk the entire event get nothing and those that actively search for survivors (which is the goal for this event) get the bags as a reward for saving them.

And the people who only want to do the other events still get the regular alliance bags but not the ‘save the citizen’ bags.

On my engineer I can easily get at least 30-35 tokens during one event each reset. I just keep running and the mobs do not appear strong enough to kill me (unless they are elites with ranged attacks)

Yes.
But only if you use the stats off the fractal capacitator and the looks off the advance spinal blades.

Also you will not be able to upgrade it to Tempered Spinal Blades or any off the coloured shiny ones that aren’t introduced yet.

My suggestion would be to wait a lil bit. Make up your mind when the follow ups for the tempered ones are there and wether you want that look or not.

Correct. It is assumed that the required components will become available during the next LS event which I guess would revolve around either retaking LA or some nasty thing coming up from the harbor (or both).
