I’m sorry, I haven’t spent much time in WvW or explored it much, the screenshot suggestion is all I can really offer you.
Sometimes they are really hard to find and you have to see if you can spot the difference. It could be something different all together because it’s not the open world map for all I know.
Worst case, it could be bugged and you’ll have to send in a ticket.
The only thing I can suggest is finding a screenshot of the map with everything completed and do a side by side comparison. It sucks and it’s slow but it works.
Ahhh, this bugs the crap out of me! It’s largely a rp thing to me but the personal stories are supposed to be about your character no? I really hate that they take my ranger’s mask off. He doesn’t look like himself without it.
Besides… why would you randomly remove your helmet before some grand adventure or battle?
I just felt like sharing some quick inked doodles I did. The Sylvari is my lovely elementalist main. (Ignore his terrible face. I suck at faces.) The Charr is his adopted daughter. He is not a wise man.
Enjoy!
Edit: I’ll post more later when I feel like tackling fern hounds.

@Ba air,
I’m not saying the idea of not being able to look like an NPC is dumb. I get that.
I’m saying its lame how we’re so limited in base face shapes and sliders.
But we’re not really limited? The Sylvari get a ton of faces and the sliders are plenty to create some really unique looks. Not getting a few faces for NPCs is not limiting us much.
I might have rolled a rifle using warrior Sylvari after hearing that Hale did the voice acting….Now to set up a good red, black, and white dye theme.
Other than the pain sound, I love the female Sylvari voice!
This sounds brilliant. On WoW I love the transmog system and change transmogs often. It’s one of my favorite things to go collect more pretty items to add to my huge pile of useless but pretty armor.
I like the idea of not having to clog up so much bank space too!
It’s been stated by Ree that only the Pale Tree can give birth to more Sylvari.
We know this isn’t true. Malyck did not come from the Pale Tree.
A Pale Tree. He came from a Pale Tree. Not the same one, but a Pale Tree.
I would like raids, I would switch from WoW if there were raids, but at the same time, there would be a hell of lot of tweaking to do to make them work. The combat, downed, and death system make big fights a giant zerg fest with little strategy. I think they’re have a hard time implementing anything close to the complex strategy and mechanics of a WoW style boss because the combat is just so different. I mean, dodge the red circle and shoot the adds isn’t that bad but that seems to be about all you could see from GW2 raid bosses.
The ui would need some tweaking as well. It’s really bare and simple for something like raiding. Just tracking the boss or a champion in the open world can be annoying.
You’d have a point if say, names became free after a player hasn’t logged on period in over a year, and only on characters below a fairly low level. But 30 days? No that’s not fair. 30 days is really not that long to really declare someone completely inactive.
This is not something that would be implemented permanently, just a one time event, the game is fairly new, but alot of names were taken that noone will ever get to use them.
Since the game has 2 months, this actually makes alot of sense to apply now.
After the name release, it would return to normal and taken names are taken, if they do this a couple of times per year it would not hurt, there are alot of players leaving and alot of players joining, and trying the game, soon enough names will be running out like they have in GW1.
Only you need to do is to login to GW, you don’t even need to play, and if you wanna keep that name reach level 10, takes about 30 minutes.
I just can’t understand how this makes no sense.
Because it’s not needed, I have had little problem getting names, even unique names with no surname. The locked names were just released as it is. My fiance was one of the people that played the first two weeks and disappeared for a month. He just logged on a week or two ago to play a bit. So clearly people that did leave early on can still have an interest.
People will play for a little bit and quit all throughout the course of the game because it’s not a sub game, so having it implemented now does not make any more sense than having it implemented later. It would actually make more sense to consider this after a year or so when names might actually run the risk of being too hard to get.
People shouldn’t have to log on when they’re busy to keep their names. 30 days isn’t long, like I said. When you’re busy with real life you don’t always have the time or the thought to log on. They already paid for their five character slots, they have the right to keep their names as long as they want, inactive or not, especially as there’s no starting up again; again, no sub.
Tl;dr:
- 30 days too short
- Gone early on does not = never coming back
- Not a sub game so an account is not ever really inactive
- Not fair to players that paid their 60 bucks to have their characters, whether they’re using them as much as you think or not.
Not a terrible idea on paper but the potential for bugs and exploits is really high. You have to consider the story element of dungeons too. You can’t remap that. The dungeons in Diablo aren’t really compatable with GW2 dungeons anyways. They strive for different things. It’s a dungeon crawler, going through dungeons is all you do there.
If the bosses and areas ended up the same but in different orders I don’t think it would add anything either. This isn’t like Diablo dungeons where you have a mess of random areas with a big boss at the end. The randomizing system requires a different sort of dungeon all together.
You’d have a point if say, names became free after a player hasn’t logged on period in over a year, and only on characters below a fairly low level. But 30 days? No that’s not fair. 30 days is really not that long to really declare someone completely inactive. Maybe for a guild but not for an MMO. People take breaks, leave their characters alone.
If I say, got really busy with school and work for a month, came back, and my lovely necromancer had lost the name I spent ages getting right I’d be raging mad. Try last names or built in titles for your characters, it really helps.
Yes forcing people to socialise in an MMO is so archaic.
Standing in front of a dungeon, fighting the LFM spam in map to try to get your hands on a group is not socializing. It is not any more social than being popped into a dungeon in WoW by the LFD tool. I did the whole sit outside and hope someone will being doing story mode thing. Inside the dungeon? I talked about the same as I do in WoW’s LFG. The conversation and amount of speech was pretty much on par with WoW’s dungeons down to the explanation of a fight being: “Basically just avoid this one thing and don’t be dumb.”
Beating one’s head against the wall that is map chat spam is not social, it’s annoying. You can be JUST as social with the help of a LFG tool. It would be easy especially if they a) kept it on your server, no cross server, that’s when kitten really start to crop up and b) made it so you still had to get to the dungeon. This way you could be out in the world and making friends there while the handy tool makes it so you an easily get a group of people together to beat up a dungeon.
I fail to see how repeating “LFM TA Exp” is any more social than a tool that lessons the spam.
It’s been stated by Ree that only the Pale Tree can give birth to more Sylvari. As there were already seeds for the Pale Tree and more, I doubt that there is a need to make the Sylvari as more seeds. Something is already capable of making pale seeds. If creating the Sylvari was to make more seeds there would be a hell of a lot more trees around and they would have appeared before in some form because there were seeds long before anything Sylvari appeared. I say there would be way more because the current Pale Tree has pumped out a huge amount of plant babies.
Being for defense isn’t a bad theory but it could be equally “because she could.”
It’s a pain to get into story mode dungeons to boot. You don’t see many calls for story mode amid the never ending chat spam. I’d really love a LFG system in some way, even if it was just on your server and you still had to walk to the instance. I know they want to keep the social element alive but I don’t feel all that social when I’m stuck in front of an instance for however long instead of being out in the world… you know… playing.
I don’t mean that there should be a ‘mirror-image’ option. I just want the base shapes and sliders available.
“Keeping the characters unique” as an excuse to limit the amount of customization possible, is just dumb kitten
Like anyone really cares what somebody else’s face looks like anyway.
It’s not dumb, they’re important NPCs. They want the significant NPCs to have strong, reconizable appearances. Having players running around with the Pale Tree’s face, of all NPCs, would hurt how special and beautiful her appearance is because it’s not unique. They kinda need to stand out.
I still have a hard time not seeing Malyck every time I click on the face option that mirrors his in the character creation.
I would really like something like this. It’s hell to find a group that wants to do story mode.
Try the cooks outfit? Though I would like to see more outfits yes.
I like this idea. My friend is having a hell of a time getting on Tarnished Coast.
He’s a great leveling buddy but I’m not willing to switch back to my old server and lose out on
RP.
Sorry I don’t see the point? There’s nothing you need to buy monthly. Just buy the gems when you need them. This isn’t the worst idea I’ve ever heard but it’s too specific and largely pointless.
Yeah it’d be lovely for my only options to not be cultural or TA tokens… :/ I think Sylvari should at least start with leafy armor. It doesn’t make much sense for them to start with human clothes.
But then I’ll have to change all my armor as soon as I start.
But yeah, lorewise, they really should start with the leafy armor.
I have to change all my armor as fast as possible when I roll a female light armor Sylvari as it is. That… horrid miniskirt… (I prefer regular armor on my Sylvari main but I’d still like more leafy options. There are so few.)
I’m confused here. You’re not actually suggesting anything that isn’t already present. Even on my completely full, hard as heck to get on server because of said fullness, the leveling zones are pretty quiet. Unless you’re in a starter zone, you can avoid running into people really easily.
That is, those who tend towards introverted pasttiming rather than extraverted activities, even if it means being near, around, or with other players, but alone or unpartied.
This is present right now. I do it all the time. I run around unpartied most of the time and rarely talk to those I run into while roaming the world. There is no need for a new system to allow what the game already has. Also, half the playerbase? That’s a big number to pull out without proof. I am introverted yet I still have a guild.
What you’re suggesting here could be acchieved by simply changing servers. Want less people? Go to a less populated one. Want more people? Camp a full one at 4 am and hope you can get in. If my full server can have sparse zones, a medium or low pop one would be dead.
1) The NPCS are fine… They’re Sylvari; bright, colorful, and completely lacking in fashion sense is their thing. The Grove is bursting with color of all varieties. Everything is amazing and interesting in this world, including color, why not apply way too much? I think it adds to their charm.
2) I would have to disagree on parts here. I would be really saddened if they were all brought into a more humanish line. The very reason I bought this game was the most inhuman face in the male Sylvari options, the bark face. As soon as I laid eyes on that I spent hours looking up GW2 and fell in love from there. I just had to have that face.
Besides, they are supposed to have some inhuman elements. They are imitations of humans, not humans, these occasional drastically inhuman elements really show this part of them off in a great way. They’d be way too elfy without this; they wouldn’t really be Sylvari anymore, just really green humans. I will agree however that more grass and leaf hairstyles would be welcome. I’d love my main (barkface <3) to have some willow leaf hair.
(I see no reason to remove variety. It’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to Sylvari. The other races are comparatively very boring, especially human, Norn, and Asura. Oh yay… Would you like to be grey or brown?)
3) Yes we need more options. I’m sad that the other races can work fairly well with human based armor (arguably not the Charr as much) but Sylvari armor is just so distinctly not present. Both my main and my pet alt Sylvari stay mostly in human clothes for in-character reasons but some of my other Sylvari would just do so good in leafy armor that’s expensive and annoying to get your hands on.
As a side note: “Mystical and dignified” are not the words I would use to describe the Sylvari. Okay some of them are dignified but they aren’t graceful, disappear-into-the-misty-trees-magestically forest elves by far. They’re curious, they’re earnest, they’re a bit childlike and tiring at times, I don’t think it would help to remove that from them in their appearance.
Well we don’t know if the trees are connected either. It’s very much in the air but even with Malyck the connection to humans seems to work best so far.
By a year or two? You’d be fine.
The only ones I can see being justifiable are low hp and broken armor while in a party. You don’t need to be in a party for open world pve so that’s pointless. Not properly geared is way too vague and hardly needed for just roaming the world. Surrounded by three or more monsters? If you’re close enough to be getting that notification you should be close enough to be offsetting them being surrounded. If not then events where there are waves and waves of enemies would be horrendously annoying with all the notifications.
I have to agree. I’ve given up crafting for now because the amount of stuff I had to store in my normal bank slots from crafting was getting way too high. With that stuff gone I have a good amount of room after paying to have another section of slots open. I’m worried what’s going to happen when I start leveling up my other 6 characters however….
I’d like an individual bank for each character with a small account wide bank for non-storage crafting materials.
I was a bit bemused when I first summoned it on my elementalist to find it was a fern hound. I’m guessing because they have so many names as it is that it’s not a placeholder, but I’d still like it to be renamed. You can stretch hound but mastiff is most certainly not so wolf like.
I’m going with “appeared” = first noticed. The second line of the intro video at least lets us know that the Sylvari think it’s 25 years ago.
Unless you’re trying to rp a first/secondborn Sylvari, one or two years difference there is likely not going to hurt the rp or lore for you much though. Compared to WoW lore, only being off by a year or two is pretty solid.
Yeah it’d be lovely for my only options to not be cultural or TA tokens… :/ I think Sylvari should at least start with leafy armor. It doesn’t make much sense for them to start with human clothes.
Thing is, if you chose the “Where life goes” philosophy for your Sylvari, you meet a very special Sylvari that throws a big ol’ wrench into the whole “Sylvari look like humans because the Pale Tree was planted atop human graves”. The meeting with this special Sylvari suggests that all Sylvari would have a humanoid appearance anyway.
It’s not completely disproved from him however. It’s possible that the trees are in some way connected. His tree could have learned from the Pale Tree. We can’t know though but we do know that the Sylvari ARE supposed to be imitations of humans… from a design stand point. We don’t know that his tree isn’t on a human grave either to be honest.
In all seriousness, there’s nothing that says sexuality has to have anything to do with reproductive options. If a race is sexually dimorphic, then the male who pursues the male is a homosexual, the female who pursues the male a hetereosexual, the male who pursues neither an asexual, and so on.
A more interesting question is: why are Sylvari sexually dimorphic? Plants, of course, have both male and female parts. Is there any chance the Sylvari are similarly hermaphroditic? What’s nature’s plan for a race that don’t reproduce through any kind of sex but are still outfitted with sexual organs?
Imitation of humans. Pretty simple. There’s no real hint that they’re hermaphrodites but they can have sex so likely have sexual organs that match their appearance. It’s not “nature’s plan” it’s the Pale Tree, which is, as a tree, a natural thing, but it doesn’t appear to be an evolutionary thing.
Also, while you can debate if two male sylvari in love are in a homosexual relationship or not based on how they view gender, they are still going to be percieved to be in a homosexual relationship; as you can see from this thread.
I’d vote for being able to hide chest armor. Hell a lot of the cloth female gear is so revealing as it is, it’s not like it’d be a big change. I’d like this option on my male ranger.
They lack the ability to reproduce but not the ability to have sex. It’s been confirmed, as far as I’m aware, that they do indeed have bits that work.
With the thinnest build and shortest stature you can make them pretty tiny. My guardian looks like he could pass for a thirteen year old. They are smaller, on average, than a human, though I tend to push mine to either really tall or really short.
Making them more alien would have been cool but they are meant to be fairly human. You can still make them look pretty strange with the right combo of hair, face, skin, and colors.
Try guildwarsinsider. That’s where I found the link to that.
One of the reasons I love Sylvari is topics like this. Serious discussions about the possible existence of nipples.
The ways I see it is that them having working genitals does serve a purpose, just not a reproductive one. Nipples, though, do not and they lack the glands to attach to them anyways. If we are assuming that the Pale Tree did design the Sylvari in a somewhat purposeful manner, it seems like it just picked the main bits: Human shape, important organs,…. bits…., and left off some more, uh, subtle areas.
As far as Malyck goes: until it is explained I assume that the various Pale Trees are interconnected but possibly not in a way that the conscious element of the Grove’s Pale Tree can notice. That is just my theory.
I feel like this can’t be answered without basically repeating the entire Sylvari background. :U
I can’t really think of a practical purpose for the glow. That’s not a very good way of avoiding getting eaten by nasty things in the jungle.
Some things really are just put there to look nice.
“Elli: The Sylvari cannot reproduce, can they?
Ree: No, no, they can’t. The only way a Sylvari reproduces is the Tree. The Tree gives birth."

Bam! They can’t breed. Said by Ree herself.
Oh man, I would love that option! My Necromancer looks so creepy with her eerie green glow but I never seem to play her at night. So many Sylvari just look better with the glow.
Glog, there are two tabs, the first tab is the basic gear that all looks the same. The second tab, which should be the second coin on the side of the vendor window, shows the gear for the dungeon in question.
They are pansexual as far as we can see. They don’t see love based on gender/sex. There are plenty of heterosexual Sylvari couples: The Shield of the Moon storyline is based on one. There are only two homosexual Sylvari relationships I’ve managed to find and I spend more time in the Grove than I should. (Caithe and the Green Knight couple.)
If you chill around the Grove I promise you you’ll overhear Sylvari talking about their different sex love interest.
Pretty sure that’s Caithe’s face. I can’t really tell but it looks like she has the same forehead and under eye markings, just a different color.

I loved it when he would get all pissed because he didn’t make a funny joke. X) Laugh you humorless cretins! And of course, there is Mad King Says, which I did three times just because it was hilarious.
Hee hee, I’ll miss him too. I really was pretty “meh” about the event as a whole until I could follow him around. He’s just so… delightfully demented.
It’s obvious that Kuishen understands that it was a gamble. There is no need to be condescending about something when you’re completely missing the mark. The point, and it’s a good one at that is that you have two options:
a) Get lucky and get an endless tonic early
b) Have gotten so many mats from several thousand bags- not hundreds, not a few thousand, but upwards of ten thousand bags- that you could craft the tonic.
This is perfectly fair and reasonable. Both options get something, option b just takes a much, much longer time and investment to get. This is not hard to comprehend or consider, there is no need to bash Kuishen for being less than happy that they are getting nothing out of the materials they have, when such a recipe could be reasonably added.
I’ve been looking all over for that trick or treating sylvari! He’s hard to find.
The only one that looks anyways odd is the first one but like Bullfrog said, it’s probably just shadow. The eyes look well aligned and the colors right. If it is a bug, then it’s probably due to changing the pupil size.
