new trait system

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

You now buy your traits and core skills with Hero Points. There are 5 Specializations (old trait lines) and you can buy the traits in those lines, in order, for whatever number of HP each trait needs. You can choose which specialization to put HP in but you have to buy the traits within a specialization in order.

However, you can only have one specialization active starting at level 21, two starting at level 45 and three at level 71. You can switch up which specializations are being used and which minor/major/grandmaster traits are active at any time out of combat for free. You can’t reallocate HP previously spent.

Skills are similar, broken into different types but you must buy the skills in those types in order.

You have enough HP from leveling alone to buy all skills and all traits in all 5 specializations available in the core game.

ssd loading times?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

What SSDs buys you is the lack of seek times which is why random read times are so much higher with SSDs than normal HDs. Every time your HD needs to seek (move the r/w head) it is extremely slow relative to the normal transfer speed. One average seek takes as much time as 1-2 megabytes worth of data.

As for sequential speed, HD is still limited to spin rate and data density on the platter determines top sequential speed. SSDs can read at the maximum speed of the SATA 3.0 interface, if the flash allows it.

Popping over to Storage Review, the WD 6GB Black has a top sequential read speed of 214 MB/s but a 4K random of 0.325 MB/s. The 2GB Samsung 850 EVO has a top sequential read speed of 500 MB/s and a 4K random read of 40 MB/s.

Guild Mission Reset Time Changed

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

OK, that is frustrating. I would really like some clear communication regarding mission and black lion key reset schedules. As it is, I missed missions and then wasted an experience scroll because the normal key drop for the personal story was disabled when raids were turned back on Sunday evening. others got to do missions and got their weekly key, while some like me did not… all due to poor, misleading and contradictory communication from ArenaNet. Not professional at all.

they messed up on the mission reset time yes, but when did they ever mention anything about black lion keys from personal story reset times? i see nothing in this thread (from an official source) saying anything whatsoever about keys…

To my knowledge players had to figure out the key reset time, ANet wasn’t forthcoming when asked and that annoys me. Why keep it a secret?

in Players Helping Players

That’s pretty accurate. Typically (not necessarily this way in GW2) a raid is a souped up dungeon for larger groups of people that takes longer to complete. It will have more complex mechanics and less forgiveness of player error.

and the prizes are way better?

I would tend to say no given the stingy so called RNG and wanting to encourage using real $$$$ to buy gems. But we’ll see after it’s out.

That makes no sense since rewards you get in-game aren’t ever found at the Gem Shop. Or are you talking about their worth in coin, which again doesn’t matter. The Gem Shop wasn’t designed so it would be “free” for most players.

As I keep saying, cutting the silk scrap requirement in half or a third isn’t going to shift the price of silk all that much as demand for Damask is 3-5x higher than the other ascended mats for armor. For weapons Damask isn’t used at all and Deldrimor Steel, meaning iron, is the primary mat with a little Elonian Leather and even less Spirtwood Planks. Still adding in weapon needs doesn’t offset the shear amount of Damask required to ascend out a full compliment of professions with all weapons of those professions. I’m just to tired to figured that out right now.

In the end it’s rate of supply over actual demand that determines price of the raw mats in the end and silk is always going to have a higher demand than supply, no matter what is done to the recipe for Damask.

Can you elaborate, why you think that silk will always have a higher demand than supply?

What do you think will happen, once the requirements are nerfed down to 150 scraps per day and nearly everybody who wants to craft damask, will be able to get enough through indirect loot sources?

There simply wont be any demand for it on the tp for those silk scraps that are looted by those players that dont want to craft damask. There is no other sink for silk.

I dont deny that right now there might be more demand for silk than there is supply, but it isnt as significant as you claim. Maybe the overall silk supply in game (not only on the tp but also stored in peoples banks and storage or in light armor, containers and salvage materials is losing 1-2% every week. If you take 50% of the global demand away, we will have a huge oversupply every week.

My assumption is silk scrap drops as much as thick leather does. You need 150 thick leather per Elonian which would be the same if you alter Damask to need 50 silk bolts instead of 100 as it is now. But since Damask is needed 3x more than Elonian, demand for silk will remain higher than thick leather, so it shouldn’t crash to minimum value that thick leather hovers at times.

When a player gets mats they do one of three things, they keep them, they sell them to the high bidder, they try to sell it above the high bid price. The only thing we get to see on the TP is the amount players are selling not to the high bidder. Sure you can look at the quantity of bids to try to determine how much is being sold directly but because bids could be pulled for no loss to the bidder, it’s fuzzy at best to try and determine the amount sold directly to bidders. Sure some clever player could write something to grab all the bids every, whatever ANet show us is updated at, get a better handle on bid movement and ask movement to get a better guess at a velocity to estimate what actual supply and demand is but I don’t think that halving the silk requirement for Damask is going to collapse the silk market. Not as long as Damask is required at 3x that of Elonian Leather.

NCSoft has done some terrible things to games … ones that made them money at that. The less they are involved, the better IMO.

Other than City of Heroes, the rest of the NA MMOs that they closed were all failures financially, some spectacularly. And CoH’s income dropped to the point that it couldn’t support the studio so they closed the studio which doomed the game.

The question is now can Wildstar pull itself back up out of the well they dug for themselves and do well enough as a F2P game to make the jump across the Pacific. NCSOFT really wants to be more than a one region game company. They want their native developed games to do well in NA/EU (finally doing a B&S release) and vice versa.

Anet is still a wholly owned subsidiary of NCSoft, but now they’re doing their own publishing so NCSoft doesn’t get mentioned as much. A bit like how Cadbury is owned by Kraft, but you don’t see their logo on the packaging.

Anet has always been fairly independent though, their relationship seems to be that when Anet needs cash up front for a big project (like GW1 or 2) NCSoft provide it, then Anet pay it back over time.

Yes that money will then go towards other NCSoft games, it will have come from other games too. That’s how the system works.

Exactly, where did ANet get their development funds from? Lineage, AION? What doesn’t happen is NCSOFT can’t loot ANet’s accounts or demand more of a royalty or extra payments beyond what was agreed upon.

What NCSOFT gets at the end of the day, well quarter, is the ability to add in ANet’s sales income, and expenses, into their quarterly and annual reports.

I am actually glad that Anet took over. I have dealt with Ncsoft in the past and to say that I was less than pleased with them would be an understatement. Basically, everything that Anet does right Ncsoft does wrong.

They have a history of not listening to thier community and they have now gotten to the point where thier #1 concern is getting people to spend as much money as possible in the cash shop. It has actually gotten to the point that they have events every week and every one is aimed at luring people to the cash shop to spend money.

Every other aspect of the game is almost completely ignored.

And Nexon bought shares in them a couple of years ago which further explains the p2w direction (coughMaplestorycough). I was very worried that the gem store in this game would take on a Nexon vibe.

Not this again. Yes, Nexon bought stock. They never got any seats on the NCSOFT board and when they pressed early this year NCSOFT shut them down by getting a white knight to counter Nexon’s percentage.

Basically back when Nexon bought the stock the two companies formed a new joint studio. Their first project got canceled part way through and suddenly NCSOFT announces a very similar game coming soon. Nexon wasn’t happy about that and tried to take over NCSOFT. Then there was the stockholder meeting where Nexon tried to take over and they failed spectacularly. Nexon is now pouting in a corner with their lawyers waiting for the day when NCSOFT stock is above the level that they bought it for so they won’t take a bath on the sale.

Damask

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

It’s not just to 2-3x the T5 base material difference. Overall the need for Damask is 3-5x as much as either Elonian Leather or Deldimor Steel (85 vs 24 vs 16), assuming an equal number of light/medium/heavy ascended armor sets are being crafted. That alone increases the demand on the raw mats.

All combined the amount of Tier 5 base mats are 25.5K silk scrap vs 3.6K of Thick Leather Sections Vs 1.6K of Mithril Ore. So even halving the silk scrap requirement the demand will still be much higher than Thick Leather Sections. That’s the reason T2-T4 cloth is also expensive compared to leather or ore (no T3 ore is used so Iron gets doubled down).

You are completely disregarding the demand for deldrimor for asc weaponcrafting.

And damask is the obvious choice, if Anet wants to keep ascended armor crafting cost high because its used for all three professions, so they only have to micromanage one material instead of 3.

Lowering the price of damask also wouldnt neccesarily remedy the difference in crafting cost for the 3 different armor weights.

In fact, i dont even know, if reducing the silk requirements will even lead to lower damask prices, as the other tier cloth will become the bottleneck.
Right now, you need 1 part Cotton, 2 parts each wool and linen and 15 parts silk.
If Anet decides to reduce the silk requirement by 50%, we still need to get the other cloth. As people will now be able to to farm their own silk on a daily basis, they will require more t2 to t4 cloth, which will go up in price.

Right now, players are willing to pay 17g for a bolt of damask, and that wont change, if Anet changes the silk requirements, the other cloth will just go up in price until damask costs 17g again, if faucets for linen, cotton and wool arent adjusted.

We actually might end up lowering the price of damask in the long run but only because the player base will earn less gold per hour, as silk is now at vendor value again, which cuts everybodies income.

So it doesnt really matter, if damask will go down a couple of gold, if we earn 1g less per hour from selling silk.

Ah … I’m saying it wouldn’t affect the price of silk significantly because the demand for Damask is so much higher than the other ascended mats. Sure halving it would reduce the cost of Damask but it won’t drop the price of silk scraps as long as demand far outstrips new supply.

Damask

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

True.

First problem is the demand for Damask is significantly higher than the other time gated ascended mats. 85 Damask vs 24 Elonian vs 16 Deldimore in total among all three armor weights. That automatically means that Damask is going to be more expensive. Damask takes more than twice as long (in player days) as the other two combined. Even if the silk scraps required were 150 or 100, the amounts of T5 base material the other two ascended mats need, there would still need 3-5x as much as the T5 on the other two simply due to the demand of Damask compared to the other two.

Silk is the worst offender for raw material price but T2-T4 cloth prices are also much higher than either leather or ore (iron doing double duty since no T3) shows this with cloth requirements other than silk costing 3.9 gold Vs 2 gold for leather and ore.

So it’s not just the 2-3x worth of silk scraps vs Thick Leather vs Mithril Ore but also that Damask is needed way more than either of the other two which contributes to the price of Damask.

What exactly seems to be the problem here?

Silk price has been quite stable since ascended armor got introduced, so i dont know why they should cut its demand by 33%, 50% or 66%. It would bring it back to vendor value in no time and even add additional demand on all the other tier cloth, which would go up in price.

In the past month alone, the price of silk has increased 50% from approximately 2s to 3s, and it will keep on rising until some months after the expansion releases.

Source

In the past month, the price for 1 bolt of damask went up from 15g to 17g, a whooping 13% price increase.

Last year, damask went down from 17g to 13g starting halloween, through LS season 2 and wintersday because they added alot of new faucets for cloth in general during those events.

Guess what time of the year it is?

Expansion time. Word from the devs that Raids are balanced around having ascended gear. I hardly call the 33% price increase over the last month for silk scraps as “stable”.

Before you guys discuss DX12 performance, I suggest you gather more information. Check this video of Chris Roberts talking about Star Citizen development on these new APIs, for instance.
https://youtu.be/XD9_L5o4mhQ

In short, anyone can port a DX11 game to DX12 in a couple of days, but they wouldn’t take advantage of DX12 benefits. It isn’t that simple and it would take a complete overhaul of GW2’s engine.

Except the game isn’t Dx11, it’s Dx9. Porting from Dx10 to Dx11 is also fairly trivial but Dx9 to Dx10 isn’t. And a primary benefits of Dx11, the ability to multithread the render code, will still not be beneficial to us until ANet can make their data thread safe (as mentioned in the reddit post).

As for Agemnon’s assertion that Win 10 doesn’t support Dx9. BS, the game runs therefore Dx9 is supported. The DLLs are found in the Windows folder. You simply can’t use the Dx Runtime Components package to update them in Windows 10 because what was shipped are the final versions of Dx9.

One or the other at least. Unless of course they know based on info they have that even reducing it from 300 scraps to 200 scraps wouldn’t be enough to keep new supply in check.

Do not worry, when the game was launched they said DX11 support was coming Soon™

That is outright lying.

What they did say was that they were going to LOOK INTO adding DX10. And since they clearly haven’t done that it seems likely that their looking into adding it showed that it was simply not worth it.

The actual quote off of the Facebook post.

For those of you who have been asking about DX11 support for Guild Wars 2, our goal with GW2 has always been to provide a gorgeous fantasy world while at the same time running on a wide range of gaming PCs.

Focusing on DX9 allows us to do this, as it’s a much wider supported graphics API than DX11 is and we wanted our game to reach as many of our fans as possible.

We will be evaluating supporting DX11 post launch. ~RB2

Don’t care about beta.

That’s it. If you don’t care about beta you can wait until whenever they announce early access for pre-purchace, if they are going to do that. Maybe a week to a week and a half before so you can get your vet slot.
