ANET only needs to do two things to make Guild Wars 2 truly free to play*:
– Allow F2P players to buy gems with gold
– Place HoT in the Gem store. If a player wants to remove the F2P restrictions, they need to grind up enough gold to buy the gems. ANET gets the money from an HoT sale (maybe more, depending on the gem cost of HoT), they just get it from people other than the person who now has it.
*By truly free to play I mean that someone can access all game content without spending a cent on the game. Paying money only speeds up access to content.
Yeah, that’ll keep the lights on and the devs fed.
The Internet has made it so everyone wants everything for free with no restrictions. Not everyone or everything is paid by Patreon or donate buttons.
You don’t understand how the gem store works. For a gem to be available for someone to buy with gold the gem first needs to be purchased by someone with real money. That is where ANET gets paid.
Once someone has purchased gems with cash, ANET doesn’t have any reason to care who spends the gems as ANET has already been paid.
So if HoT is available in the gem store and someone uses gold to buy gems, then gems to buy HoT, then ANET was paid when the gems were purchased by the person that purchased them. Sure, ANET wasn’t paid by the person who now has HoT, but why does that matter when they were still paid ?
But the cost of the primary development is paid for buy the “box” price. Hence Buy to Play. They game is still Buy to Play. Every expansion will be Buy to Play.
The Play for Free is an unlimited trial version of the game with restrictions to hamper RMT and bots. That’s why there is no Gold to Gems in the P4F trial. The game is still Buy to Play.

Communications Team Lead forgot to provide additional time for EU gamers. Thank you.
Of course we can do that by ourselves but yeah…
Could have converted to UTC but that would have benefited EUers and left NA players scratching their heads.

I’ve been here since Dec 2012 and I don’t have a legendary or ascended fractal gear either. I still play the game and I still enjoy it.
I’m an explorer so I like finding things. I’m also a trader so I enjoy finding niches on the market where I can make some gold before they disappear forcing me to look for another one. But that’s me. What do you enjoy doing in an MMO? That might give us an idea what to suggest.

What’s not clear, and this just occurred to me, is this a one time thing because of the beta weekend or is this a permanent change?

Not unless you can live with the chat restrictions, TP restrictions, mail restrictions and fewer initial character slots with fewer initial bag slots.

No, it was the suggestion that it’s all false flags.
This is derailing the thread. Ignoring GamerGate I do know women, personally, who are abused and stalked in online games, thus going back to my comment about doing what you can to avoid being doxed.
Somebody made it a mission to dox Dulfy for some reason. So protecting one’s identity seems only natural to me.
Back on track, I think Dulfy is a great resource for this game and donating is a great way to support them with keeping it that way.

So you’re saying being kicked in the shins is OK, as long as nobody kicks too hard. You guys are great.
So moving it from Saturday at 17:00 PDT to Monday at 0:30 PDT, 31 1/2 hour delay, is some kind of horrid change? At least they gave us the heads up.
RIP City of Heroes
Heh. GamerGate nuts? You seem kind of misinformed, GamerGate is concerned with ethics in the gaming media, *not with genders politics. *
It most definitely had to do with gender politics, and women who most vocally spoke out against sexism and such in games were harassed and stalked for doing so. That being said, I don’t think Dulfy would necessarily be a target of any such harassment/stalking because I don’t think she tends to make statements about the whole thing.
It was feminists who inserted themselves into controversy, it would be the same if they were a man, and any way, these feminists are not well liked by more then just a few groups (For good reason), and so far there is no proof that gamergate supporters harass them. In fact most of gamergate wants the harassment to stop so these feminists can no longer play the victim card. Its likely third party individuals/ rogue elements that are responsible for the harassment. Another option is the harassment is fake so that they can continue to make thousands and thousands of dollars out of it as professional victims.

Currently the first key from the personal story limit, derived by players rather than told by the devs, is reset the same time as the Guild Mission Reset.
Will it also move to this new time?
RIP City of Heroes
I don’t see this a him not liking ArenaNet’s direction as after 10 years doing something new and the likelihood that Amazon waved a big pile of money in his face.

Never heard of this site.
Gamasutra is a game developer news/resource site. Use to be a magazine I once got, a very long time ago. The post-mortem articles were my favorite.

We’re to close to judge without bias. What it did have unlike some of the other recent MMO trailers was show actual skills you have being used, not attempting a super photorealistic render that is not achievable by the game engine that would only lead to disappointment once you fire up the game, and not be overly steep in pre-existing lore.
Yes it only showed one profession fighting. It showed, well heard, the big bad and showed some of the creatures we’re fighting. What it doesn’t show a purely new player anything about central Tyria. I know it’s an expansion but with the core game folded in and that’s where a new player will start until they are 80.
I think this trailer was too short, too focused. Good enough to draw existing players into the expansion, not good enough to bring in new players into the franchise.
But that’s my two coppers.
RIP City of Heroes
This thread made me unpassword protect it because since I only needed it at home once, I’m afraid I would be in the same situation in another 6 months and forget what it is.
RIP City of Heroes
So you password protected WinAuth and don’t remember what that was, is that the problem? I don’t know what to say. I assume you didn’t jot down the 16 character secret code anywhere that it was set up with.
RIP City of Heroes
I’m confused since WinAuth only returns a 6 digit number. What password are you talking about, because I know you can password protect WinAuth.
Make sure your time/date is set properly. People were talking about changing the date to avoid the “ad” in the load screen. WinAuth uses your time/date and the “secret code” to calculate the 6-digit code so your time/date needs to be in sync with the time/date on the server.
There was a time when I was Authorizing at my parents where the web site said it was the wrong 6-digit number but when I hit back on the browser it turned out it did accept it. But that was within a couple of days of them pushing people into 2-factor authorization so I thought the page might have been bugged. Since I haven’t needed to answer a challenge since then, I don’t know if it was just buggy for me or if it was bugged whether it was fixed, etc.
RIP City of Heroes
Because they don’t want to have to police each and everyone and repeat the process everytime one they had approved changed. The only thing they promote are overlays like Overwolf.
RIP City of Heroes
That’s the Two Factor Authorization I believe.

As title states… in the previous announcement regarding raids, they stated HoT would come WITH Raids.
Please see https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/designing-challenging-content/
AND I QUOTE-
“Our goal for introducing Raids with the release of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™ is to give players the truly challenging group content you’ve been asking for.”So will there be refunds for the preorder available to those who ordered HoT based upon the false belief that ANET as a company gave us in that statement? I ordered based upon having Raids AVAILABLE at HoT launch as did MANY others… and I am sure that them like myself are completely let down by this information that Raids will be delayed to some time “before the holidays”…
Yes it says is HoT will bring raids to GW2. There is no specific mention of a timetable as to when. You’re the one who read into it.
Let’s turn the statement on it’s head. Without Guild Wars2: Heart of Thorns, there won’t be raids. The only thing stated is the requirement of HoT to do raids.

Compared to launch trailers from other MMOs, I found this to be short in length. While it does look interesting as someone who plays the game, I don’t know how well it invokes interest in the game via the expansion from those who haven’t played GW2 yet.

Nobody promised no healers. Even ANet stated months ago that it wasn’t their intent to eliminate the traditional trinity by giving every profession a bit of everything. But they wanted a more action based combat which precludes a traditional planted tank with healers keeping him upright.
Now it sounds like HoT raids and boss events go out of their way to show the zerk meta the error of their ways. However to keep the upgrade usable, a profession that can, via combat, toss off healing left and right is now available. They will also make those vitality and healing buff upgrades useful.
RIP City of Heroes
I have one. Only annoying thing is needing a 2nd email address and dealing with overly complex passwords as you alternate between accounts. True you could include the password in the short cut but then it’s plain text and easily discoverable.

Reflections and Shadows as well. Especially Reflections on all.
But primarily displaying other players around you and their fully rendered appearance rather than the generic placeholder. Character Limit affects the number displayed and Character Quality affects how many of those are generic or not.

Surprised she’s not on Patreon but that might require more sharing than she’s willing to provide.
I certainly know if I was to ever generate a fan site, it would be registered to a PO Box, in another town, possibly another state, for exactly what that gent in the link was trying to do. Especially if I was a woman considering the GamerGate nuts.

GW2Efficiency uses the API but for it to access the info in your account, you have to provide the API key.
I use the API for things like the trading post and gem exchange all the time, which doesn’t need the API key. That’s how sites like GW2TP is able to get near current prices off the exchange.

Electronic Arts has come to the party for Mac users and made a native Sims 4 version. The Mac version is even suggested to be better than the Win version. Miracles do happen it seems so I live in hope that Arenanet might give us some love too.
Yes but EA had $4.5 billion in income last year and Maxis, the company that originally developed The Sims (also SimCity and Sim<whatever> series of games) was a very Mac oriented company with a large Mac following. I imagine Mac owners were quite disappointed by Sims 3 running under Cider, unlike The Sims and The Sims 2 which were native ports done by a 3rd party. The Sims 4 uses a new internally developed multi-platform game engine to once again satisfy their Mac player base.
ArenaNet on the other hand only had $75 million in income in the last 12 months. They have no previous history with gaming on the Mac since Guild Wars was Windows only. So they lack the resources to do a native port of the game for the Mac so they took the shortcut by using Cider. Just like Star Trek Online, Champions Online and EVE. CCP Games, EVE’s developer, is estimated to have a similar size annual income to ArenaNet.
So EA doing a native version of The Sims 4 is about not only having the budget available to do so but historically a pre-existing large Mac following they needed to satisfy. Sadly ArenaNet has neither.

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
It doesn’t say if it fits a 1151 Motherboard. I read somewhere that the 1151 MB’s will support 1150 cpu coolers. Is this correct? (this looks like a good fan)
http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/cpu-air-cooler/hyper-212-evo/
The cooler mount holes on the motherboard for Intel haven’t changed in quite a few sockets now (starting in 2008 with Socket 1156).

Well when WP posted about this last week he inadvertently slashdotted it and the host service disabled most of it and it’s creator was out of the country at the time to get them to restore it.
So if it is up again, grand, been meaning to look.
As for the OP, players will always find a way to discriminate. Do you really want to play with people who would require it?
Edit: Wow, I’m poor considering the number of hours played.

Because my last MMO also had a cider port and I had friends there who played on Macs and ultimately went with Boot Camp to get better support.
I understand as a developer that it’s easier to develop from day one if you already decided on multi-platform, multi-API support than try to retrofit later.
I know that at the end of the days, the decision is out of the hands of the developers and are in the hands of management and accounting. That you don’t support a platform out of the kindness of your heart but whether the “cold equations” says to management that it’s worth the cost.
All I’m trying to do is inject a dose of reality into the wishful thinking that a native port is coming. I think that’ll only happen if they spend time figuring how to recreate the game in a 3rd party game engine. Same goes for console ports and even Dx11/12 support.
Sorry you’re upset I injected myself into your grousing thread but I think it’s better accepting what you have than wish for something that may never come.

Maybe Transgaming promised improvements that never came. Now Cider is own by nVidia and now you can’t find any information on Cider other than it was bought by nVidia. Transgaming has scrubbed their site of all Cider information.

You all knew that such a mechanism once in place would be used to promote whatever is going on with the game and in this case it’s two days of Twitch-con.
I still say better here than in the notification area with the Story and nearby events.

May bad, misread RP as F2P and/or vice versa.
RIP City of Heroes
Yes but we all know ANet personal can’t say anything unless it’s vetted.
It’s likely she can’t even say she hasn’t heard back. CS/PR is tough if you can only talk specifically about vetted topics.
RIP City of Heroes
My point was most CPU reviews test games at uber settings which all but negate CPU differences in games with a single GPU. You might see a difference with multiple GPUs but there’s not a lot of PC gamers running SLi or CrossfireX..
As for this game, upgrading may not be worthwhile Vs overclocking the snot out of your current CPU but if you are building a new system from scratch, I would still favor the newest platform going forward, that is Skylake. Unless of course you use your PC for other purposes than gaming where the CPU performance improvements in Skylake over Sandy/Ivy Bridge/Haswell would matter.
RIP City of Heroes
She sends the questions metaphorically upstairs and she hasn’t heard back or was told wait until Twitchcon is over or the launch because to busy to think about it. In all likelihood the request will get lost in all the noise dealing with pre-release, post-release, first major update, etc. They might not have even had an internal postmortem of that event yet to see if they would offer it again.
And it wouldn’t be unusual that she can only say definitive replies that have been vetted for release. So that leaves her with small talk.
RIP City of Heroes
Lets see if I can be clearer. A lot of VA do work both on animated series and games. On animated series they are getting additional payments from syndication and DVD/Blu-Ray sales if the series is successful. They get hazard pay for doing difficult voices and get breaks when they are recording for an animated series.
They simply want the same protections and additional income from a game’s success. They want the same protections for mo-cap that actors get for TV and movies.
RIP City of Heroes
Would you rather hear a definite maybe? But that really doesn’t change anything other than they don’t know either.
RIP City of Heroes
So basically only the players that bought the game this year or a few months before the Free to play announcement are getting their money back ?
No only people who buy HoT from ANet and bought the game, from ANet, when they were led to believe they needed the core game for the expansion got there money back.
There is no refund plan because of P4F.
