That is what is being said, the version of Windows AFTER Windows 10 will be packaged as a service.

Microsoft has not come out to shoot this rumor down. These are major business publications, not a random tech blogger.

Sure Microsoft could be using this to gauge the reaction to the idea. Or this will solely be for business. But that is the current rumor.

Well leveling is a double edge sword. Or more specifically the auto-downleveling. The idea is that you can still participate in all game content and play with friends who may have much lower level characters. I think that those are worthwhile things.

That said it also means you don’t ever have to leave the starter zone if you don’t want to. In other MMOs you are pushed along because everything stops giving you XP and rewards. But here why leave if, assuming you are upgrading your gear as you level, you become a tiny one to two shot Godling. Use to take you four or five hits to take down one critter? Now watch as you plow through a whole group without breaking a sweat. Feels great, why go someplace where it’s four or five hits again?

Retroactive sale refunds/compensation

in Players Helping Players

Behellagh.1468

If you purchase something from a store and they had a sale the day after you would not be entitled to a refund or compensation. You made a decision to purchase said item, and then a sale happened. You weren’t ripped off.

Actually, many stores would offer either a full refund or a refund of the extra amount paid, as long as it was within a certain time frame. The major chain stores I’ve worked for in the past would definitely honor it if it had been less than 48 hours since the initial sale and the customer had a receipt, as well as the item they purchased, with them.

That’s because of the store’s return policy. It’s easier and you don’t have to deal with returned stock if you simply credit them the difference in price. And while it sucks to buy an item only to see it on sale the next day/week, you did have use of that item for longer than you would have if you waited and got it on sale.

I was quoting more the attitude that chests were all about tickets. As long as players go in knowing that the chest’s value in relation to the key price isn’t the tickets and therefore isn’t gambling and that as long as they know buying keys it isn’t the cheapest way to get those skins then fine. Tickets are my primary reason. Everything else is bonus

^
Tickets are my primary reason also. Everything else is bonus.

Then you have no right to complain about the drop rate or how much it costs in gold or cash to get a ticket.

Tickets were added well after launch when the BLC were introduced. It was done to spur key sales. Once they were added key drops, from map completion and BLCs themselves almost entirely dried up. Key farming became an acceptable gameplay option.

In the end it’s one of the motivators driving the pathological need to farm gold to buy those skins directly or gems for keys to get tickets. And farming for gold is why players cry grind. It’s just another “reward” mechanic that makes the game rewards feel … unrewarding.

Don’t give in. As soon as you make the rewards received more important than the enjoyment of playing the game is no longer a game, a source of enjoyment but an obligation, a job. And don’t you have enough of those?

Excuse me???

Where have I complained about the drop rate or the cost to get in gold or cash? Please. Find one post. I’ve always said I do key runs, which means I never buy keys.. At most I’ve debated the most cost effective way to get them.

This is not the same as gambling. Gambling offers you a chance at real money back. Lion chests are a product you buy with no way of changing that to real world money. The baseball card analogy is closer but even that still can be changed back to cash which lion chests cannot.

That’s why you buy gems and not anything from the Gem Shop directly with cash.

When will players accept that the standard gem shop items you get in the chests are the primary reward and like in the case of gift bag promotions the value of the contents only has to exceed or at least match the cost of the gift bag. Tickets are just like a “chance to win a new car”.

In real life would you buy all the gift bags just for a better chance to win that car? No? Then why not buy keys with that same logic, buy them for the get the standard gem shop items and if you get a ticket or enough scraps for one, bonus! But tickets and scraps should never, ever be your primary reason to buy keys.

Well the exchange was set up as an alternate, official means to buy gold, via gems, with cash. To make this gold supply neutral, as in not creating gold from scratch, they set it up so players could trade gold for gems. That gold is paid to those selling gems while those gems end up going to players paying gold. Since gems are only created with cash and destroyed when buying items in the Gem Shop, the exchange only needed an initial seeding (more likely X gold and Y gems added to the exchange for every game account opened) the exchange becomes self sufficient.

And yes, it is contradictory to one of the underlying tenants of F2P/B2P but also remember we had LS which during the first season required you, if you wanted to participate show up every couple of weeks and with the second season you had to show up if you wanted the chapters unlocked for free.

So yes you don’t feel obligated to play because of the price you the subscription but there were other motivators. So rotating gem shop items are simply another one.

I leaded more then enough farm zergs on any map that I can tell you for sure that on every map a zerg farms the people that want “progress” are a minority of 2-5 usually.

How many players have given up trying to run the event to completion because of farmers constantly monopolizing the event?

And if you are willing to step aside and let them play through, you can go back to your farming without conflict. It’s monopolizing a piece of game content which is no different than a group monopolizing a pool table, foosball table or arcade machine in the student lounge. Do you want the RA, ANet, to step in and remove it because it’s the easiest way to stop the conflict?

And since ANet hung another benefit in completing certain events like trait unlocks, it’s even more of a problem. People quickly forget how tough it was to level up your first character, how little you have in currency and skill points. Not everyone has been playing a level 80 character for the last 500 hours and has skill points coming out of their ears.

First of all the BLC should only be thought of as a “Whitman’s Sampler” of minor gem shop items whose value equals or exceeds the cost of a single key, 125 gems. The only gambling comes from how much of a discount over buying those items separately you got.

Now imagine a “Whitman’s Sampler” of chocolates with a “Chance to Win a Car” sticker on it. That’s what tickets and ticket scraps are. You wouldn’t buy out all the boxes of chocolates at your market in the hopes of winning a car, especially if you hate chocolates, so why are you (the general you) buying keys to unlock BLC just for tickets and scraps?

And yes, math wise it sucks.

I remember seeing that it’s a 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 chance for a scrap and 1 in 40 or 1 in 50 for a full ticket.

Lets look at 25 keys, 2100 gems or $26.25€.

At the better odds of 1 in 4, ticket scraps distribution is

0-9 – 92.87%
10-19 – 7.13%
20-25 – virtually 0%

For full tickets at 1 in 40

0 – 53.10%
1 – 34.04%
2 – 10.47%
3 – 2.06%
4 – 0.29%
5 – 0.03%
6 or more – virtually 0%

That means with 25 keys you have a 49.31% chance of not getting a ticket or 10 or more scraps. It’s a coin flip.

Enough scraps or tickets for x tickets

1 – 35.40%
2 – 12.15%
3 – 2.66%
4 – 0.42%
5 – 0.05%

That translates into 0.696 tickets per 25 keys, ignoring the extra scraps. But those extra scraps do add up. So lets double the order 50 keys for $52.50€.

Scraps

0-9 – 16.37%
10-19 – 82.24%
20-29 – 1.39%
30-50 – virtually 0%

Tickets

0 – 28.20%
1 – 36.15%
2 – 22.71%
3 – 9.32%
4 – 2.81%
5 – 0.66%
6 – 0.13%
7 – 0.02%
8 or more – virtually 0%

I won’t bother with the addition tables but now you only have a 4.62% of not having at least 1 ticket and the average is now 2.1001 tickets for 50 keys, due to rolling over the scraps.

No matter how you slice it it’s expensive. About $25€ a ticket. If you used that to buy gold via the exchange that’s 247 gold at the moment. Daydreamer skins, currently 1 ticket, cost less than 100 gold. Balthazar, now a 5 ticket skin is less than 245 gold.

It’s the skins you can’t buy anymore that are truly pricey and mostly because it’s a seller’s market, easily manipulated, with only 1 available at a time.

First having an item available for a limited time forces players off the fence that they may sit on if the item is always around.

The rush caused by a popular item returning jacks up the exchange rate which is a good draw for players willing to spend cash to buy gems and convert to gold. Also since the exchange sinks gold coming and going (the exchange rate difference) as well as sequesters what’s left, it acts as a sponge/marsh for excess gold in the economy which helps keeps inflation due to an increased money supply to a dull roar.

Return of multiple popular items may also drive players to spend money for gems because they’ve already tapped out their excess gold.

Basically at the end of the day, the purpose of the Gem Shop is to get players to buy Gems with cash. If a popular item is always available, they could save up enough gold to buy it via the exchange and that doesn’t drive income generation for ANet.

As for your game settings, lowering the Reflection, Shadow and Character Model Limit should lower the load on the CPU. Also defrag the drive the game is on. I use Auslogics free DiskDefrag on mine and it allows you to just defrag a folder or file. If your drive is really full that could also be a problem since you only have 4 GB of ram.

From the sound of it, the OP was listing the standard things found in Asian MMOs and is confused as to why they aren’t found at all here. Even the 800 lbs NA made WoW has some of these things but of course WoW was created in a time where that was expected in a subscription MMO refined from the EQ model.

ArenaNet looked at all those things and wisely saw that those features were excluding potential players and they wanted an inclusive game. That would likely mean larger box sales and a larger player base to drive the cash shop. Of course this disenfranchised to a degree the hardcore GW players, who were all that was left playing GWs.

Also over the last 15 years, MMO players have grown older, have families and family responsibilities and have less and less time to play. This makes a casual MMO like GW2 attractive.

Armor/Outfit revelation today

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

So since they now have a team to specifically work on the game rewards and armors/outfits there should be no excuses for them to be able to revert outfits back to individual pieces.
You can keep posting tin foil hat but let me educate you on something. “Tin foil hat”` expression is derived from MKUltra experiments which, this may shock you, have been admitted to and proven true. So By saying “tinfoil hat” you are saying " protect yourself from the truth.’ Maybe someday these tools will get this instead of spouting off uneducated responses and phrases they read on the internet.

First you can’t revert to individual pieces if they weren’t that to start with. And with individual pieces they would/should need to test them against all the other pieces they will be making contact with to check for major clipping issues. The one key advantage of outfits is that they pieces each are adjacent to is a known issue. It’s like Macs Vs PCs. One case you have a very limited selection of possible hardware configurations while PCs are nearly innumerable.

And I reserve my Tin Foil pics for players spouting that Nexon is forcing ANet or NCSOFT to do X or Y.

Except that originally “Town clothes/outfits” WERE individual pieces prior to the wardrobe change. So they could easily revert back to this. And since they have a team there shouldn’t be a problem with any testing, designing or the minimal changes that would need to be made. Not to mention the thousands of players who would point out what changes were needed.

True, some were town clothes but most outfits now never were.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

RNG has two things going for it. First it’s “fair” when everyone has an equal chance to get X. Second on the macroscopic scale the game is delivering the right amount of gear X relative to all the checks.

The major negative is the distribution of those items because of the nature of n-independent trials. There will be some who will have to endure many more checks before they receive an X while others will frequently get X.

With a 1 in 500 chance and 1000 reward checks the distribution is the following.

0 – 13.51%
1 – 27.07%
2 – 27.09%
3- 18.06%
4 – 9.02%
5 – 3.60%
6 – 1.20%
7 – 0.34%
8 – 0.08%
9 – 0.02%

Over 40% got less than the layman’s estimate of 2 per 1000 attempts and over 32% got more. Also 14.27% got 4 or more while 13.51% got none. And that is perceived by players as lucky and unlucky.

The problem is that the unlucky may feel disenfranchised and leave the game dissatisfied while the metric tracking the number of reward Xs being handed out is spot on at 1 in 500. And since you don’t unsubscribed and simply vanish, there are no exit interviews as to the reasons why so the developers have no idea if the reward system has any bearing on a players departure.

We are heroes. This is what we do!
