shakes head

Take your color code with an alpha channel and you get a 32 bit or 4 byte value.

Use the signed version gives you 31 bits or a range from -2147483648 to 2147483647. Assume that’s copper and you have a cap of 214,748 gold and change. Since the average person would scratch their head over such a weird number they capped it at 200,000 gold.

If they want to be Intel fanboys let them but there is no excuse.

No excuse for what, exactly?

Writing coding that’s so focused on single-core performance. Although multi-threaded code is harder to write, these days it’s the only way to actually use the available hardware.

It’s not just an Intel vs AMD thing, either. I’ve got a dual Intel CPU system… I just checked, and with my CPUs sitting at 65% idle, my GPU at about 60% idle, and using 1.64GB of RAM (with 5GB free), my FPS near the Mystic Forge in LA hovered around 15-20. Even if nothing else changes, it seems like with all that free RAM there’d be room for more caching and pre-computing.

You really don’t understand do you. It’s not that they wrote the game with single core in mind. They wrote code that, under certain conditions like lots of players about, can’t accomplish all the work required to prep and send the data to the GPU for the next frame quickly. And that means how fast it takes to get it done is determined by single core performance. No thread of code can achieve better performance than running on a single core. The OS may bounce it from core to core as it scheduled threads to run on all the cores but that doesn’t make that thread get done sooner.

The game does use multiple threads but most appear to be utility, like loading assets or building player character models that need to be displayed. So beyond the two primary threads, which is why the game requires two cores, and a handful of minor threads, is why having a lot of slow cores (AMD FX) is less meaningful than having a few faster cores that can run those two main threads as fast as possible.

If i remember correctly, they disbanded their dungeon team awhile back. That says it all.

This…hurts. I know GW2 isnt meant to be your traditional MMO but to leave the dungeons so untouched for 3 years is absolutely horrible. When I think about getting into GW2 again, which I currently am thinking about, I think about how stagnant the dungeons are. I like dungeons. I dont like them to be the only thing I do at endgame…I can only stomach so much forced group content. But dungeons need to be there and arenanet fails miserably at boss mechanics and frequency with adding new dungeons.

Anyone suppose that if this is true that the cause is the exclusionary and abusive behavior of dungeon speed riders. Remember the game especially PvE is suppose to be co-op friendly and not someplace where abusiveness and rudeness is the norm.

Just maybe if those zerk only, speed runners who kick others over the smallest things were nicer, we would have gotten more dungeons.

Some professions can tank a little better than others. Ranges and Necros have their pets to distract critters, Mesmers with their phantoms and clones, Engineers with their turrets and other gizmos all can draw some critters away from you and other players. Of course some critters are smart enough to go after the actual player than get distracted.

Other professions can try control, slowing, confusing, blinding etc which while isn’t aggro control can hold a critter at bay for a few seconds while the group circles it.

There are synergies one can achieve in this game but having one character purely tank while two others heal to keep them in play while the damage dealers are pouring on the DPS doesn’t really exist. Well DPS does but pure DPS can’t last long toe to toe so they rotate in and out of melee range.

It’s different and no player can feel like they are pigeon holed into one and only one activity for the entire game.

My Wallet shows 200,000 gold, but I had more than that stored on different characters. What happened to my money?

Although the Wallet displays just 200,000 gold, your money is not gone! Gold above 200,000 is stored on your account and will fill your wallet as you spend gold until your gold balance drops to 200,000 across your entire account.

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/27658798-In-Game-Currency-Wallet-FAQ

Well it sounds like the wallet gold value is using a signed 32 bit number.

Interesting comments so far, but i’m a bit confused as to some of the statements based on how the game reads these codes.

For Example:

Taking the 6 bit Base64 representation and looking at it in 8 bit Binary you see…

000000 011111 111111 111111 111111 111111 111100 111111
becomes
00000001 11111111 11111111 11111111 11111111 00111111

The first octet (left to right) is the leading bit for coins – 00000001 (0×01)
The second octet goes from 0c – 2s 55c

After the second octet is filled it’ll reset back to 0’s and move to a new octet to the right which starts at 2s 56c – 00000001 00000000 00000001

This third octet has a range of 2s 56c – 6g 55s 35c
The fourth octet ranging from 6g 55s 36c – 1,677g 72s 15c
and lastly the 5th octet range is 1,677g 72s 16c – 429,496g 72s 95c

But that is where the confusion lies…

Looking at the last two sets of 6 bits for Base64 we have

111100 111111

I have two bits unused in the first set of 6 bits that – when used – don’t change the value of the code.

Ex: [&Af////8=], [&Af////9=], and [&Af/////=] all yielded 429,496g 72s 95c

In a binary representation this makes sense as the last 2 octets look like…

11111111 00111111

…where the 2nd to last octet is full. But, then why doesn’t the value change when you have essentially 11111111 11111111?

In addition – i’m looking at what happens if someone reaches this point and attempts to go beyond it? I think of an old SNES game I played (Lufia II) where it had a digit overflow issue for the boss (Egg Dragon) whose hp was maxed out and so healing it for 20hp left it with only 19hp left since it reset the counter to 0 by overflowing with that first 1hp.

So would this happen and the person essentially lose all their gold or is there a safety measure in place to prevent this?

And am I correct in assuming this would be “Max Gold” for anyone?

First, nobody uses base 64 for in code for numbers, no idea why you would think that. Outside chance they might use BCD which uses 4 bits just like nybbles so a 32 bit value is 8 decimal digits and a 64 bit value is 16 decimal digits but that’s highly doubtful.

- Season 2, I think i read somewhere on the net that i would be able to purchase/download/re-live season 2 of the living world. Is this possible? Would i receive rewards of any value or is it purely for the story? I don’t really mind either way but would be good to know.

Yes there’s an upgrade at the Gem Shop called “Living World Season 2 Complete Pack”. It will unlock any season 2 content that you don’t have at a 20% discount of the per chapter cost in the Story Journal on your Hero screen. So 8 LS2 chapters will be 1280 gems rather than 1600 gems.

- Legendaries, google tells me there are no new legendaries, is this true? I’m not a big fan of the ones currently available. Well not a big enough fan to engage on a grind.

Supposedly HoT will add new ones and allow a “simpler” way to get the older ones, one of each per account.

- “BiS” Gear, i believe now there are much more ascended pieces than the fractal rings. Is a full ascended set now available and possibly farmed from locations outside fractals?

Most players craft ascended armor and weapons than hoping for a chest of ascended armor, I think. But since I don’t care about either, since I don’t go into the mist or try to be an ace in WvW, I’m not entirely sure. I simply think it’s not worth my time over Exotic gear.

Do you go to pop concerts and boo the artist screaming how they are a talentless hack? Do you go to book signings to tell the author you read better stuff on bathroom walls?

Fine, you bought the game, you didn’t like it in the long run, move on already. This isn’t GW. It wasn’t meant to be identical to GW. It was not meant to be similar to WoW or any of it’s clones. You’re not happy how things turned out, alright. But that doesn’t mean many don’t enjoy this game and ranting about how much this game sucks isn’t going to change anyone’s opinions.

gems for gold and visa versa

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

First, ignore the values on the GW2Spidy charts, they have been wrong since last August.

The Gems to Gold is always near 72.25% of the Gold to Gems value.

From your screenshot.

Gems to Gold – 1706 gems buys you 250 gold. 1 gem is worth 0.1465 gold.
Gold to Gems – 2000 gems cost you 405.7769 gold. 1 gem is worth 0.2029 gold.

(250/1706)/(405.7769/2000) = 0.7223

Close enough for government work.

As for tigirius’s point the exchange is solely based on player activity. Yes ANet can influence that by introducing, removing or returning much sought after items at the gem shop and when they do it. I would not be surprised if the timing was based on the gold reserves of active players and using the rush to convert to gems as a means to sink/sequester that gold out of the general economy. The rate shoots up and now it’s more attractive to those with cash to by gems to convert to gold which brings the rate back down.

If what you are suggesting is true then the game has lost players who spend cash on gems while keeping or expanding the number of players who don’t. Capping or lowering that rate won’t bring back those buying gems with cash, just the opposite.

Having specific loot tied to specific activities means it will farmed to death unless that loot is account bound. Making it account bound mean it players who can’t do those activities will never be able to get one because they won’t appear on the player market either. Not making it account bound means the market will be flooded, the price plummets, everyone gets one and now it no longer “special”. What goals will there be left to do once everyone gets the gear they want, relatively quickly? That’s a death knell for an MMO. That’s why WoW keeps cranking up the levels and gear with every expansion and once they get their level and gear they leave until the next. If they keep their subscripition running, no issue. But that is an issue with a game without a subscription because only active players buy gems with cash.

So we have a random chance on any drop for the most valuable items (I get an exotic weapon drop from a critter in Wayfarer Foothills) and a TP where unwanted items can be sold rather than destroyed.

What needs to be done is a combo system, I think that’s 2a, but I recommend hidden from the player, that keeps track of “misses” and when that value gets high enough, bang, they get the reward and the miss count is reset. It leaves the surprise element without having skee-ball tickets to trade in and doesn’t add to many extra drops to the economy.

Lost, Confused, New to Guild Wars 2?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Yes, the “traditional” MMO trinity of DPS/Tank/Healer doesn’t exist in this game. Everyone can heal themselves, Skill 6, and rez a downed or dead player or friendly NPC (and you get XP for doing so). Nobody has enough HP, damage mitigation due to armor is never enough, healing is fairly weak and what aggros each type of critter is different to attempt to Tank. Dodging a hit is the best way to mitigate damage.

All professions are a bit of jack of all trades and are simply not as super specialized as found in most other MMOs. I wouldn’t say balanced but all professions are soloable in PvE. Everyone can heal themselves, have range and melee attacks, can buff allies and debuff enemies to varying degrees. I suggest you read up on the professions in the wiki.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Profession

PvE in GW2 is designed around the notion of co-op play. You can’t kill steal here. Everyone gets a copy of material nodes to gather, chop and mine (for XP). Helping another player to take down a critter doesn’t “steal” XP or loot from them, everyone gets the same amount once a minimum amount of damage is done to it. There is no traditional quest giver chain. You will automatically be downleveled if you are in an area that’s lower level to you yet you get XP and loot drops appropriate to your actual level. The previously mentioned everyone can heal themselves, everyone can rez.

Gameplay is more action oriented. Because armor damage mitigation and HP aren’t fantastic relative to damage from critters, moving and dodging is often required. Trying to Face Tank doesn’t work in this game. Fortunately most skills can be used while moving. A few seconds out of combat radius will heal you to full so you don’t normally use your heal outside of combat.

Who uses sell orders as a bank anyway? From what I’ve read, those that use the TP as a bank use buy orders, not sell orders. No fee. TP holds your gold. If you put a 100 gold buy order on a legendary and it gets filled, well…. I guess you can come to the forum and complain. /shrug.

I think there is a misunderstanding with what I meant by sell order. I meant listing an item. * first post edited

Ok. I’m still confused. You are saying people store items in the trading post as a bank? Why do that? For a little bit of gold you can get a personal guild bank and store items in there, as long as you want with no charge.

Because the TP is infinite is size and costs only a one time 5% fee to store an item there forever, assuming of course the price you listed it at is unlikely to be reached before you retrieve it.

As for the OP. The 5% fee nonrefundable fee is also there to encourage the seller to pick a reasonable selling price right away rather than list it, pull it as soon as it’s undercut, list it again, rinse and repeat. New stuff coming on can undercut but it will cost an existing seller to chase the price down.

The 10% is purely a gold sink. The sales tax.

Also like to point out here in this discussion is that selling to the highest bid is actually just listing at the item for sale at that price. A normal “sales” order is generated, added to the database of items for sale and then the bid at the price gets fulfilled. There is a chance that that bid was filled while your item was getting listed. So no “cut me a deal on the post fee cause I’m selling it to that guy right there”.

If you want to only use materials you gathered yourself, it will take you a bit of time even excluding the precursor from that list. You will have to collect numerous badges is specific dungeons, badges of honor from WvW a mat that costs 200 SPs, total map exploration. There is some actual grut work required to gather and craft everything and then wait on a precursor, which may be forever or costly MF slots.

Except they are talking the results of what is a normal distribution generates. They, ANet didn’t decide “well this guy is unlucky and this one is” it’s just the way it came out. X% of players will be lucky, Y% will be unlucky. Who they are is left to the same Gods of chance as the each attempt to win that drop from a player’s perspective.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_distribution

Binomial Distribution says for example that in 200 attempts with a 1% chance, 13.4% of the time you will get lose every single time. 100 players each doing 200 attempts means on average 13 or so players will get nothing. There is nothing that determines who those 13 players are, they are just the result of this style of item distribution. Just like the 14 player who will get 4 or more of those items in those 200 attempts. It’s a function of the math, not predestination, not some factor they can tune.

The math can tell it will likely happen, it doesn’t who it will happen to. So no, you can’t simply “switch” them.

You are assuming the distribution is random. It never truly is, however. There’s been numerous articles about this, so I’m not going to repeat it all here, but it’s a known thing.

It’s also a known thing that tiny, tiny bugs can have REALLY major results. One space too many in the code can bug an entire feature.

It’s not a “known thing”. Current PRNGs for all intensive and statistical purposes are random. They are evenly uniform in distribution, the first and second order deltas (the difference between two consecutive random numbers and the difference between those values) are evenly uniform. There are slews of additional statistical tests that it’s passed that makes it indistinguishable from a true random source (usually radioactive decay). It makes no difference that it’s a known sequence of numbers because it doesn’t matter to us. The PRNG being used repeats every 4 × 10^6001 numbers. If you call the PRNG 1000 times a second it will take greater then the duration of the known universe to repeat.

Is zerker meta so bad?

in Players Helping Players

What’s bad is that a portion of the player base require that those that play with them also sport the zerker meta and only the zerker meta. Now you can’t get completely get rid of a belief that some build is better or best but in this case, for dungeons, it’s hands down better if your goal is to run through them as quickly as possible.

This has made it difficult for some who only run dungeons occasionally to find suitable party members who would accept builds other than zerker, even if that’s in the LFG description.

Server transfer cost seems mighty unfair.

OP are you annoyed at the cost of transfers or that you can only buy gems with cash in certain size packages or both?

If it’s the first, remember WoW charges $25 per CHARACTER, here it’s your entire account for $22.50, if you are transferring to a high population world. It’s cheaper, 1000 gems ($12.50) or 500 gems ($6.25) for medium and low population worlds. The price differential is encourage players to spread out across the worlds so WvW success isn’t determined by the world who has the largest pool of players to draw from.

If it’s the Proxy Currency amounts when buying with cash is the problem, yeah buying the just the amount you want isn’t possible.

The two alternatives you have, besides not transferring, are buying 1600 gems with cash and then buy the remaining 200 gems for roughly 37 gold or buy 2800 gems and either save the extra 1000 gems for a rainy day, a watchwork pick or selling them for roughly 130 gold and probably have a few gems left due to the stupidity of the “new” exchange system.

The way you phrased it Astralporing it makes it sounds like there is a problem with a piece of code rather than a property of probability itself.

Except it’s not a gw2 URL because ArenaNet isn’t located in Palau (the .pw at the end of the URL is the country domain code for Palau).

Would you think that an ArenaNet GM would contact you about an account ban using their player account and not an ArenaNet flagged one?

Noobish problem

Underwater combat unlocks at level 8. This can be a problem if you are a lower level than that. At level 8 you will get basic gear to do underwater combat.

So yes, if you can’t fight underwater yet you can either go off and do some other stuff until you are level 8 or do as suggested and pull the critters, by getting attacked and then head back to land.

amd a10 apu or i3 intel HD in or pentium G

Everyone sort of overlooked the OPs primary point of an inexpensive desktop system with the talk of SSDs and “decent” GPU. “Decent” GPU isn’t an option here.

Okay, if you can swing a GT 740 with GDDR5 memory with a Haswell Pentium G dual core that would be the sweet spot. Even a GT 730 with GDDR5 memory will crush the integrated Intel GPU.

However if you can’t and will never add a discrete video card, I would lean toward the A10-7850K. It will crush the i3 in gaming. The question I can’t answer is whether the lower performing cores of the A10 will bind GW2 as much as the sub par GPU would on an i3.

drop stats when salvaging weapons/armor

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

But salvaging isn’t crafting. Level 59-80 items salvage into T5 mats with a chance, depending on the quality of the salvage kit of one tier higher, ie a T6.

This should give you an idea on average what to expect in salvaged mats.
