What happen with that njoy you had posted in your other thread? The sticker on that one showed 340 watts at 12 volts which is more then enough.

PCIe is backwards compatible. A PCIe V3 card will work fine in a PCIe V2 slot. Sure it’s total bandwidth is degraded but that’s small potatoes compared to the computational power and VRAM memory bandwidth of the higher end cards. Total overkill for this game but most PC gamers play more than one game.

For a comprehensive comparison I use TechPowerUp. Besides using a range of games and resolutions, they also test power use and have a performance/dollar and performance/watt charts.

Assuming you aren’t insane and buying a GTX 980Ti or a Titan X, here’s a like to their recent performance chart from a GTX 960 review. You can look at the other charts from the pulldown at the bottom of the page.

Gems from real money too expensive

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

It’s 80 gems per $1€/£0.85 and has been that since launch. And as others pointed out it’s ANet’s primary source of continuing income. It’s comparable to other game proxy currency available on consoles and in other MMOs.

Your issue is that items cost too much in your opinion in terms of real money. $10€/800 gems for an armor set. As others have said, you are saving from no subscription or being charged for the littlest of things that you would find in F2P.

You also have to remember that a fair number of purchases at the Gem Shop is done with gold bought gems. Lowering the price of items will simply mean it’ll be easier to buy items with gold bought gems which may mean less cash bought gems bought and that means less income for ANet. Given a way to get something for “free” (no cash cost), people will pursue that route rather than open up their wallets more to actually buy gems.

That’s probably why he’s not asking them to lower the price of the items; but just the real money cost of gems.

If they did that, more people would (almost certainly) buy gems with real money, rather than waiting to buy them with gold.

But in the end it’s the same thing. $10€ for a full armor skin is $10€ if it’s 800 gems or 2000 gems. Since I doubt that’s what he’s suggesting, altering the cash cost per gem then he is asking them to lower the cash cost of items on the gem shop by reducing the gem cost or increasing the amount of gems you can get with cash. It’s the same result either way.

Or is this a complaint about the equivalency of $1 is 1€ even though that’s been addressed (UK VAT, exchange rate at launch and any other fees involved with currency exchange).

But it sounds like he’s asking ANet to lower their income by discounting the price of gems, something that will never happen. You want to pay less for an item, wait for the sale.

The problem with region specific is that nobody will venture beyond the race city’s gates to do the content. World boss events by nature are map specific. The only PvE class of daily then is the do 4 events in map X and I don’t have a real problem with that.

As for “new daily system is a move away from the original intent”, how did it differ from the original daily system? Only differences are Laurels aren’t part of the daily, the fix 10 AP reward if you do 3 of 12 dailies Vs 5 of 10? 12? and each daily is worth 1 AP. If anything, the decoupling of the Laurel makes me more incline to skip the daily. The token awards are just that.

i3 4170 or G3258 for GW2

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

Yes can show up to 100%, but rarely, nearly as rarely as the times performance is worse. It’s very dependent on the kind of app and games in general aren’t one of the ones that make a big difference in. And unlike the similarly clocked i3-4360, the 4170 only has 3 MB of L3, not 4 MB which decreases the likely gain from HT.

Where you are right is the notion that a 4 GHz OC of a G3258 was enough to compete with the i3-4170’s default clock speed, it isn’t. If the OP doesn’t want to commit to OC the G3258 to it’s max with a good 3rd party cooler, and the price difference between the i3-4170 and the G3258 isn’t better spent on food/rent, then the i3 is probably the better choice.

His PSU choice implies the OP is in Eastern Europe so the price difference may be more than the 80% difference, $60, found here. So it may be a budget issue.

The ancient Tom’s Hardware hardware review of GW2 had the i3 giving only a mere 3% over a duel-core Pentium at the same clockspeed so a 4.0 GHz G3258 Vs a 3.7 GHz i3-4170 may be too close to call.

Thanks for pointing out the default clock speed difference, I wrongly assumed it was closer.

I would go with the G3258 and OC it. i3s are limited in OCing and HT is a extremely poor substitute for 2 additional “cores”.

[tech stuff]
HT is simply smoke and mirrors to con the OS into assigning addition and hopefully unrelated “threads” of code to each core to improve each core’s efficiency. In the end it’s has the same average results as modest (20%) overclocking except HT improvement is variable and sometimes has a negative impact in a cores’s overall performance.
[/tech stuff]

So yes, G3258 and a nice $30 3rd party heat sink and OC it.

As for will you be able to play decently in WvW, the game really does better when it has 4 real cores but a true Intel quad core isn’t cheap.

We’d only need 3. Hell you could split them into English and Non-English, same as Euoservers. I can’t imagine we’d need a huge data centre.

If ANet wants to push eSports they should be paying attention to stuff like this.

If ANet wants into China, they had to licence the game to a Chinese company to run the game for them. That company, KongZhong, is the ones providing the servers, not NCSOFT or ANet.

New Player Here Got a Few Questions

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Behellagh.1468

Behellagh.1468

How is the UI on this game, compared to SWTOR?

Don’t know, never played SWTOR.

Will I be spending the next 6 weeks learning the basics?

Hope not. Recently, relatively, ArenaNet altered the leveling process to simplify learning the basics. For experienced players it’s painful but for a new player to the game, it hopefully will be useful to you, a new player.

I heard the game is open world, I like that, but am I forced to follow quests like a circus monkey running from & to point a and b until max level?

No. There are no traditional quest givers in this game. This game is more about wandering around and finding people in need of help, which are hearts on the map, or dynamic events that spring up from time to time around each map. They are entirely optional to do. However some players may feel aimless without a path to follow. The closest thing we have is your personal story but that doesn’t start until level 10 and you could ignore that completely or start it when you are level 80.

Also since the game will automatically down level you in stats if you are in an area that is below your level so the critters there are still challenging, but rewarding XP and loot in your actual level range, you could remain on the Level 1-15 starter map and never venture anywhere else. Boring but doable.

I like to grind mobs, loot items, craft gear etc. I was told this game has all of that. Is there anything else I need to know?

The PvE game is designed to be very, very co-op friendly. Just about every activity gives you a bit of XP, your character has a copy of all the material nodes on the map so there’s no rush to get to one first. There is no tagging of critters and no split of XP and loot from a critter, everyone who does a minimal amount of damage will get full XP and loot. Everyone can rez. With no traditional MMO Triad of roles you aren’t preordained to be “the support guy” or “the healer” for the entire life span of your character. This makes the game extremely soloable and with a few exceptions, little need to find and run with a party. Dynamic Events are like flash mobs with swords. Simply announce where one is happening and a crowd will form to dispatch it before dispersing again.

Lastly, I usually play mmos alone, from 12am to 5am CST, but in some other mmos, it often felt like a single player game*yes I know I just said I play solo lol*

Is there a constant flow of players running to and from? I guess I want to know if this MMO has a major city feel to it or a rural small town feel.

Well in the major cities. The game uses what’s called “megaservers” which strives to populate each map with players from all servers in your region, NA/EU. Since Oceania tends to play on the NA server, if you are as well you should find players about, just not as many as say between 5p EDT to 3a PDT. I play in that time block as well because I’m a vampire, or at least that’s what the neighborhood kids think I am. Can’t dissapoint the children now.

Hope this helps. Oh two last things, the OMG sticky at the top of this board has a lot of tricks players learned and the wiki is your friend.

Maybe I’ll see you in Tyria. Have fun.

Though you might be right, there is probably enough ignorant consumers out there who are buying them because they have nothing better to do with their money then spend it on unlocking tons of bags at a steep price. So yeah ANet probably wont change it… consumer power is dead because people don’t know how to use purchasing power.

It’s not that they are ignorant it’s just that they don’t have problems buying $5€ a bag slot per character in a game they enjoy playing. Just like how HoT is not going to be able to be bought with gems. ANet needs cash flow. Real cash flow.

To put it in MMO terms, they prefer CoT (cash over time) Vs a spike in cash. An account unlock may cause a spike but it would erode significantly any future income from that item.

No, the fee was for changing your look but the various pieces were by and large free to mix and max. Plus the cost varied based on your character’s level. You could also earn free or half price discounts which lowered the price even further.

Also the game’s money supply spun out of control once they introduced crafting and the consignment shop. The tailor cost never changed from launch so in the last few years the cost was trivial as player had 100s of millions when at launch 100K at max level was a lot. Even full cost total change was like sofa cushion money.

Don’t forget the tailor shop tokens. I totally forgot where I got them, but still had over 90 when the game died. Hadn’t paid for the tailor in years.

It was, players whined. They tried again, players whined some more. So now they are doing an expansion. However they have mentioned that Traits 3.0 will be out before the expansion so we may be getting a feature pack between now and HoT.
