Uncreative, boring, idiotic dailies = uncreative boring and idiotic solutions. That’s fair. As a player, if i was going for the laurels, i would totally go for this kind of time saver.

Of course, Anet could also just give us somewhat challenging, non repetitive, non time consuming dailies.

Completely 100% agree… can you complete the dailies playing regularly? Sure… but I don’t have like 3 hours daily to do it… before it was a little easier to do them… now it’s a pain with the healer achievement, crafter achievement, etc…

Hang on. The crafter achievement is easily completable in far less time than any of the old daily categories. It’s been common knowledge on the forum and throughout the game that refinement recipes count for this. If it takes you longer to craft 20 ore into 10 ingots than to kill 15 enemy types, you’re doing it wrong.

That said, I agree with the principle that boring and uncreative dailies lead to boring and obvious solutions.

Guys, seriously??

i literally cannot believe people can find something to complain about this

Try reading the thread before complaining about it. Many of us, including the OP are just trying to pin down the details here.

Anyone complaining about the gear boxes is doing so without sufficient information, because the bottom line is we just don’t know how they work yet.

If you insist in adding gambles to all all portions of the game (which you should stop doing) (see Orrian Jewlery boxes) at least don’t give us “all we can do is speculate” and add THE EXACT 0.0x% for every item and a list of what it can contain (specially if it has a chance of fixing the precursor fiasco).

Personally, I don’t mind tabulating probabilities for certain rewards – it’s a meta-gaming aspect that’s very engaging. But this is a very unique case where it’s highly unreasonable to ask the players to work this information out.

In the meantime, please keep providing us with as much info as you can. For example, for those of you who like to do it, a crunching of numbers about the chance to actually get a useful piece of gear or whatever you might think can be useful.

It will be 1 February before we the players even have access to a single box, but…

The problem is, at 5 laurels per 2 boxes, a player completing every daily and and the monthly through the end of February will have 42 laurels, or a total of 16 boxes (if he chooses to spend all of those laurels on data acquisition). A sample size of 16 is very definitely not informative. Even if a larger number of players coordinate their efforts, we’d still be looking at an entire month before having any kind of serious information.

That doesn’t explain why they’re class specific instead of armor-type specific. Unless ANet has departed from the “play your class your way” concept as is now telling us what stat combinations are correct for which classes…

The description says gear , not armor , so I assume you could get a rare or exotic weapon usable by your profession.

Right, my note about armor was in direct response to the above post (Ele will have light armor, etc.)

The problem is, that still leaves an enormous margin for getting something useless to the specific character – stats being the main point here. Playing a guardian, you’ll see plenty of rare/exotic loot drops that the character could technically equip. That in no way means they’ll be useful – I’ve lost count of how many condition damage weapons I’ve seen on a character with no stat allocation there.

List quickly the moves pls and how you can see it through tons of players spells and how you live (THAT MEANS IF YOU GET DOWNED OR DIE @ KHOLER DONT POST Pls)

The “tell” is that he holds his sword above and behind his head and holds it there for a pause – probably a half-second to second in length. While it’s up there, you’ll see a visual effect that appears to be air rushing into his hand.

The tell animation is very clearly visible from any angle (you can see the hand regardless of your position relative to Kholer). Another way to detect the tell is that Kholer will be standing still (movement-wise), barely moving his entire body (animation-wise), and will not be attacking. Since he’s usually a flurry of motion, the pause is very blatant.

There are a number of methods I personally use to survive. When I’m playing on my thief, I dodge the kukries he throws (this is easier said than done. It’s very easy to dodge to early – such as by dodging when the tell animation starts). If I fail to dodge, I use Roll for Initiative (a stun breaker which throws the player backward a good distance). On my elementalist, I use Armor of Earth for Stability.

Other options which are effective include – projectile reflection/destruction skills. Thieves, elementalists, guardians, and possibly others have access to these. The kukries are projectiles. Any stability skill in general – every class has at least one, and stability prevents the pull-to.

Guardians are the best at preventing Kholer from being a problem, though. My guardian has two ways to apply Aegis and one way to apply Stability… to the entire team. Once you learn the timing on him, it’s easy to fire off one of those options and protect the entire team.

According to the description you can see here http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guardian_Gear (Guardian just an example), these gear boxes would contain items the class can use of those qualities and among those levels. As for the chance of it dropping a precursor, since the description doesnt state anything about it all we can do is speculte.

However for those looking to gear up an alt, or looking for new gear for a respec it will certainly contain something useful.

This is exactly the source of our confusion. Each class has a wide range of stat combinations which could be utilized, depending on build (example: max-damage warrior vs. bunker warrior; condition damage thief vs. power/critical thief). If the guardian box just guarantees a piece of either heavy armor or a weapon usable by guardians, that’s not a substantial upgrade from plain old RNG while looting.

Given that the boxes take a minimum of 5 days to acquire, and according to the description contains one gear piece that might not be exotic and might not even be 80… and compound that with the fact that it might have entirely the wrong stats…

They don’t appear to make a whole lot of sense.

I didn’t invent this, but I came across it.

Like many others, I was looking to res someone to comeplete my daily. I noticed on my mini map all these dead people in one small area. I went there and it was at a vista that had a very high elevation….jumping from it will kill ya.

What’s your point? People will always take the path of least resistance. No armor damage from fall deaths makes this a very easy way for guild mates to help each other out.

I can’t infer from your post whether you’re saying this is problematic or just amusing. If you’re taking the stance that it’s a problem though, consider this.

In both Metrica Province and Gendarran Fields (and other zones as well) there are certain locations laden with a large number of dead NPCs. In both cases, resuscitating the NPCs is part of a renown heart, so they continuously respawn (as corpses). In both locations, I’ve seen quite a few players farming resuscitations for the daily. Is that problematic? If so, should ANet redesign existing content to accommodate the new dailies?

Blueshield.6291

At the moment it’s a nice place to mine mithril, wood and orichalcum not to mention the 2 jumping puzzles.

At the moment, Orr is a vastly better source of harvestables.

Southsun’s flora is comparatively useless (passion fruits versus orrian truffles, omnomberries, saffron, lotus, etc…), and Orr has vastly more resource nodes including more top-quality nodes (5 ori/ancient wood nodes in both Cursed Shore and Malchor’s Leap). Now that Orr’s mob density and obnoxiousness has been drastically reduced, the drive to collect those resources is much stronger.

That said, personally I do still hit Southsun in resource sweeps, just for the sake of completeness, but it’s now vastly inferior to Orr. Whereas I previously started resource runs at Southsun, I now hit Orr first. If I fail to complete the run, I miss a mere 2 ori and ancient nodes.

The only real in-game pressure to be in Southsun right now comes from ascended gear infusion recipes. I’m sure that some players view 250 karka shells and/or passion fruits as worth a +5 stat increase, but I for one do not – and I suspect I am in the majority.

In other words, it’s a problem of not having read/comprehended the patch notes?

That makes a lot of sense, but unfortunately the question then becomes what the heck can we (as players) or ANet do about it? They already announced how the new system would work in detail prior to the patch and linked the patch notes to the launcher.

Your comment about reading/comprehension is actually valid here, many people don’t read patch notes nor do they “listen” to what the devs are saying.
It would be preferable if ANet made a system that basically said the minimum amount of AR needed for a certain level of fractals, or at the very least allow people to see your AR if and only if it were below the required minimum level.

An in-game posting of minimum/recommended AR for given Fractal levels makes sense as a solution to this. I doubt it would solve the problem of people deliberately shooting for higher Fractal runs, though.

Personally, I feel that any form of gear inspection (even if currently limited to AR) is too dangerous. If we start going down that road, the critical mass of demands for full gear inspection might triumph. Soon it goes from just checking AR to checking for Magic Find, to applying personal conceptions about “correct” statistics to other classes (That guardian isn’t statted for healing power? Kick.).

Another possible solution would be to display on the entry screen the highest Fractal levels unlocked for each character. This is the least invasive “inspection” method, since it’s information that we previously had access to by proxy.

I have nothing more to say to you if you actually believe that. You have got to be trolling. I’ve worked in game design before….forget blogs, nearly every public statement I made had to be cleared through my superiors to ensure that players weren’t being promised anything that they couldn’t deliver. That’s how a well-run game is operated.

And when you worked in game design, you locked yourself permanently into trajectories and never made any changes when you realized that systems wouldn’t work the way you thought they would?

ANet has every right to make changes to content before pushing it live – and in 2010 the game was still very much in development. By your own admission, there were plenty of closed/open beta opportunities after the comment was made. If you were so distressed at the change in dye system, why didn’t you say something then? Why are you still here?

*This is a direct contridiction to their manifesto. *

Here’s another point. Putting aside discussion of whether or not grindy gameplay is or is not a violation of the manifesto, consider this.

The manifesto is not a money-back guarantee to players about how the game’s content will be formed. Rather, it’s a mission statement from ANet about how they establish their goals internally.

So if something about the game appears inconsistent with the manifesto, it means that ANet’s designers most likely made the conscious choice to depart from their mission statement. There’s nothing wrong with that.

But in my quote, Mike O’Brien clearly endorses cosmetic grinding. So I don’t see any contradictions there.

Somewhat, as in if it wasn’t enjoyable, it contradicts what they wished to have the game be. Let’s look at legendaries. To get a legendary item (minus the RNG part that seems to be largely disliked) you must partake in many parts of the game. It’s a grind in that you have to get 500 WvW badges, and dungeon badges, and tier six materials and what not, but people who have accepted it do it mostly without complaint. (Except for complaining about the aforementioned RNG part.)

To the OP, the dyes not being account bound is boring grind, while to another person, it’s fun. You can’t just state: “Oh, because it’s cosmetic, it’s ok to have to grind it.” What if dyes cost 1,000 gold each from a vendor. Would that be okay simply because it’s cosmetic grind? Some will say yes, but most will say no. Just because something isn’t required, (and, once more, as the end game is cosmetic in nature, the idea of required is a tough one to map; If the cosmetics are too much grind and no one goes for them, they stop playing and the game fails. So, in theory, cosmetic grinds are required for the game to prosper) doesn’t mean that people are not allowed to dislike the way it functions, and ANet isn’t allowed to to improve upon the system.

You’re applying a double-standard to the same issue here. On the one hand, you say legendary grinding is a violation of the manifesto purely because it’s not enjoyable. On the other hand, you admit that enjoyment is not quantifiable.

Either way, it’s essentially a moot point. Cosmetic grinds are central to GW2’s long-term player retention plans, and span far beyond dyes and legendaries (extravagant Mystic Forge exotic recipes, dungeon gear, fractal weapons skins, etc). The manifesto states in no uncertain terms a comfort with grind-based, thousand-hour content for cosmetic returns.

Daily: Dodger

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Blueshield.6291

Blueshield.6291

Having these daily achievements alters the way people play and not necessarily for the better.

Sorry, if you need to go out of your way and alter your gameplay to get Daily Dodger done, you weren’t playing properly in the first place.

Incorrect. There’s a very big difference between dodging and actually getting evasion to proc, which is required for the achievement.

It’s possible to dodge out of melee range and therefore fail to evade, or to dodge early during a long windup. Both of these are common dodging tactics which, indeed, are typically signs of skilled gameplay. But to specifically get the evade, you must dodge 1) a ranged attack, or 2) while staying in melee range of the enemy attacking. If you’re a ranged character, dodging while deliberately staying in melee range is a bad move.

If cosmetic grinds were a contradiction of the manifesto, then legendary weapons wouldn’t be designed in the way they are. Period. End of story.

Legendaries are no longer cosmetic. They will now be upgraded to the highest weapon stats every time a new tier is introduced.

Which is exactly why they remain cosmetic. Currently there is no statistical difference between an exotic weapon and a legendary one, only a cosmetic one. With the advent of ascended weapons there will be no statistical difference between an ascended weapon and a legendary one. Therefore legendaries remain purely cosmetic.

Here’s what we believe: If someone wants to play for a thousand hours to get an item that is so rare that other players can’t realistically acquire it, that rare item should be differentiated by its visual appearance and rarity alone, not by being more powerful than everything else in the game. Otherwise, your MMO becomes all about grinding to get the best gear. We don’t make grindy games — we leave the grind to other MMOs.

If you read the entire quote, he basically endorses grinding for cosmetics, but not for stats.

Precisely. The manifesto does not state that GW2 will never have any grindy content – only that the drive to grind will not come from motivation to have the BiS gear. It specifically embraces cosmetic grinding.

Blueshield.6291

Not entirely correct. While, yes, grinding for things that are cosmetic is a good way to keep people playing, grinding itself is somewhat contradicting their manifesto.

In a blog post (and I do not have the exact wording here) ANet has said that they want to largely do away with the grind. They may not want to eliminate it, but they do not want you to have to grind a lot of boring things to reach small pockets of enjoyment. Whether you enjoy grinding or not changes if this has been successful to you personally.

While you are correct in stating that purely cosmetic grinds do not effect your ability to play the game (and I will admit that even this is debatable, as the end game of GW2 is all cosmetic based), they are still a grind, and if found boring, are contradicting the original statement by ANet as to what Guild Wars 2 would be.

Simply because you do not agree with someone, do not think that they are overusing a word, or using a statement incorrectly. Just because it is not a problem to you personally does not mean it is not a problem. (And, perhaps a big one, as many of the people who have stopped playing this game have cited grinding as one reason. Whether that is true or they just feel like saying it because it is a buzzword topic at the moment is also debatable.)

If cosmetic grinds were a contradiction of the manifesto, then legendary weapons wouldn’t be designed in the way they are. Period. End of story.

Why are dyes not account bound?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Blueshield.6291

This is what Anet said that intially they were account bound then changed it to character bound? Why? This only increases the price of them and further increase the grind in the game.
This is a direct contridiction to their manifesto.

Actually, the manifesto’s stance on grinding is that they don’t want players doing it for stats, i.e., BiS gear shouldn’t be a grind (according to the manifesto. Whether or not that is the case is not relevant to the topic at hand). ANet has always been comfortable with purely cosmetic grinds. Look at Guild Wars 1, and legendary weapon skins.

Since dyes fall into the category of “purely cosmetic,” grinding for dyes isn’t a contradiction of the manifesto.

As for why they’re character rather than account-bound, it’s a move to keep dyes relevant and marketable through the longevity of the game. Account-bound dyes eventually drop to effective worthlessness as each player obtains the dyes he or she wants.

Precisely. However, with that same team composition you could theoretically run a 20+ Fractal chain in order to have the weapon/infused ring RNG, the result of which is that the lower-tiered players would be rewarded at their highest possible level (and accordingly increment that level by 1 upon completion).

If so, then I see this as an issue.

Yes. Admittedly, I could have asked them to link their gear as proof, but I really don’t want to start going down that route. I had hoped that the honor system would suffice.

So yes, for the time being my guild is limiting ourselves to purely in-house Fractal runs, where there are no unknown quantities. Assuming that others are doing the same, its unsurprising that PUGs would be harder to form now.

Nah, some crafting mats on top of that isn’t any more glorious , who knows who has bought them with real money or did the effort of farming for it.

Doesn’t matter. If they purchased gems to buy the mats from the TP, then they’ve helped keep the gold→gems ratio favorable for everyone and they’ve supported ANet economically. If they raised gold in-game and bought the mats from the TP, they’ve put in that much gold worth of effort. If they farmed for the materials directly, they’ve put in that much time worth of effort. In any scenario, the player did something beyond the ordinary to obtain the item.

The core of your argument is that you want a way for people who do not participate in certain forms of content to obtain access to an item skin. Making that same argument for legendary weapons or even hard-to-craft exotics such as Infinite Light won’t go anywhere.

I wholeheartedly agree that there should be more good-looking options for the back slot, but there’s no reason to lessen the unique appearance of current back items to do so.

A big problem that I’ve had with PUGs since the 28 Jan patch is people joining Fractal runs they are definitely not ready for. I’ve only done Fractal Daily runs so far (28 Jan and 29 Jan), but both times someone has joined the group who clearly had 0 AR. Fortunately in both cases it was only one member out of five, but it’s quite a large hassle to have to carry a player who shouldn’t be there in the first place.

Based on the responses so far, it seems like this is a fairly widespread problem.

While the change in level mechanic is fantastic for guild-only or static groups – especially for leveling alts up to where your mains are – it’s devastating for PUGs. It was bad enough to have people who managed to get to higher-tier fractals with inadequate AR; now you’ve got people who never made it there at all coming along for the ride.

I will say that “by your own admission, the only thing you want from Lyns is keys”, is impossible because I bought one of every tool for an alt, plus multiple ori tools and salvage kits. You complained that you’re being punished because people bought keys from her, but you also state that the only things you want to buy from her at this time are keys.

Applying your own logic to the snowflake exploit, if a player broke down the trinkets for ecto generation several times, but also equipped a trinket for personal use, that player would not have been exploiting. Good luck with that.

I didn’t make a post in the suggestions topic to go to court and argue with someone. I’m not twisting your words, please don’t twist mine.

I am making a suggestion. If you have a different suggestion, go ahead and make another thread.

I am refuting the necessity of your suggestion. The purpose of an open forum is to allow community discussion on topics, not to have people demand changes with no further discussion. If you’re unwilling to have your suggestions criticized, go ahead and stop making threads.

Retroactive laurels?

It’s amazing how many people came to the forums to ask for their 10 laurels for January in spite of ANet’s clear declaration that January wouldn’t award laurels regardless of whether players completed it before or after the patch.

Rich node was minimum 16 ori. For accounts with 5 parked toons that would be 80 ori ( accessible in few minutes) per day that disappeared.

No, the rich node was a minimum of 10. While I’d agree with the statement that the average was about 16, it was common for the node to drop as little as 12. If you hadn’t taken my quote out of context, you would have seen that I explained in no uncertain terms how I got to the numbers I did, which included counting all normal nodes as 3 and all rich nodes as 10.

Yes, easy farming of ori is out. That makes actually moving through Orr hunting down every last vein or ori viable. The market will inevitably stabilize, and yes it will obviously be at a higher point than we saw while the rich node was available.

Charged lodestones - Justice at long last.

I suspect they will plummet once we hit the 10 day mark and people can transmute lodestones with the new mystic binding agent. Of course this will suck for people who need glacial and crystal lodestones as the price for those is going to skyrocket, but the lodestone market will be more even across the board at least.

I doubt it will go that quick. There is better stuff to get than 10 mystic binding stuff. I for one wont spend any laurels on them for a long time.

I for one haven’t been able to find any solid information on what Mystic Binding Agents are, let alone what they do, beyond their astoundingly vague description. Do you have more detailed information?

Regardless, your personal opinion on the value of Mystic Binding Agent compared to, for example, Ascended amulets, is irrelevant. There will inevitably be players who pick up Binding Agents on the 10-day mark, if for no other reason than to nail down exactly how they work. If they do turn out to be a viable way of acquiring lodestones, many people will value them highly – even above BiS gear.

Why was the hardest fractal made harder?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Blueshield.6291

So basically they took Dredge (Always skipped for first fractal due to difficulty, time taken to complete) and made it……harder?

1. Ice boss buff

2. No wheel or pulling Rabslovich now.

Why was this done? It was hard enough before. Whats so special about dredge vs ….Ocean (easy)

The difficulty hasn’t changed. The ice elmental will be fixed and instead of Rab you can keep pulling the waves of mobs, sure it takes a bit more time, but easy enough.

Right. So a fractal that already took longer on average than the other 2-3 fractals in that run combined now takes even longer. Which is exactly the problem.

Are Fractals soloble?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Blueshield.6291

Actually, I believe that the grawl, snowblind, uncatagorized, and ascalonion fractal may all be solo’d my a very skilled player.

Underwater, Cliffside, and of course Solid Ocean (Jade Maw) can technically be soloed as well.

However, Uncatagorized can only be effectively soloed at 1-9. Once the crystals come into play on the midway boss, it rapidly becomes non-viable to solo that. Dredge and Swamp, obviously, cannot be soloed (and in fact require a minimum of 3 players) due to their specific mechanics – wisps and pressure plates.

The result of this is that attempting to run fractals either solo or with two players is taking a gamble. Running into any of the above fractals can derail a run partway.

Auto Salvage

Anet has added objects which are “Salvage Items”

Items which sole purpose in the world, is to be salvaged. If they wanted it to auto salvage, why add these at all? Just give them mats.

The reason? People enjoy managing their inventory.

The OP isn’t talking about items salvaging themselves as the player picks them up in real-time. What he suggested was more like a “salvage all” button, with options to select the salvage kit used and the rarity threshold of items salvaged.

To the OP: I would also like to see this feature. It would save considerable time spent clicking on each item individually, and be a possible workaround to the hassle of accepting the “are you sure?” prompt each time the player attempts to salvage something of Masterwork quality or higher, only to then re-select the salvage kit and continue salvaging.

I’d note that if implemented, this feature should have the option to salvage items of any rarity, not just common and fine (white and blue). Fractal runs tend to yield plenty of rare-quality items which currently have to be broken down one by one while navigating confirmation prompts.

There are already several threads on the topic; please use the search function before creating new threads in the future.

That said, I agree completely with the suggestion. Regardless of many players’ dislike for the Magic Find stat, ANet continues to put it on ascended-level gear, while leaving other much more useful stats off. It’s absurd that a stat available as the primary stat on some BiS gear isn’t tracked in the hero panel.

Transmuting is an exploit or not?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Blueshield.6291

Blueshield.6291

Originally, a transmuted item said it was soulbound, but it was actually account bound. They then changed it to show account bound. If it wasn’t intended, they would have probably made it soulbound, rather than showing that it’s actually account bound.

Indeed, ANet representatives have specifically pointed to this aspect of transmutation in threads regarding lost starter gear (thief hoods, guardian armor, engineer backpacks, etc).

If ANet specifically tells you it’s okay, rest assured it’s not an exploit.

The only reason I did not also include listed items as well is because of the listing fee.

It is true that some items are listed on the TP for exorbitant amounts of money. Eternity is right now listed for 5000g, the listing fee for that alone is like 250g, and While I think the asking price is crazy high, they own it, and they are free to try to sell it at what ever amount they feels is “Right”

True, but a non-refundable listing fee on listing dates with an expiration date generally turns out to be a good thing. It motivates players to set reasonable sell orders to ensure that they don’t permanently lose out on the listing fee. Of course, in many MMOs which utilize such a system, the listing fees are lower than 5%, and are properly displayed in projected transaction data…

Another option would be a scaling listing fee based on sell order duration, allowing players to keep items on the TP for longer. Naturally, since buy orders are not effected by current fees, there should be a hard cap on buy order duration.

We need Giants

I would like to see all risen that are not human be classified under the alternate type. The same goes for the other dragon’s minions as well. It makes it very annoying to kill 15 different kinds of things only to see your daily variety change by 1 because they were all undead, or crystals or ice minions.

I agree, that change would make a lot of sense, especially given ANet’s current objective of revitalizing Orr. The majority of risen enemies by volume are humanoid, so this wouldn’t substantially increase the difficulty in slaying enemies for the risen category, but it would at least open up other categories for completion.

Giants where are they ?

I don’t think the risen giants count as giants, only as risen. I’ve killed several and not gained points from them.

Risen Giants – and in fact all Risen, as far as I can tell, including non-humanoids – simply fall under the “Risen” category. For a list of giants who do fall within the correct NPC category, examine:

good luck trying to kill 1000 of them
