Thanks for making me notice the vendor value. They will be sold then

I just wish more of the Halloween junk had a vendor value, since most of the stuff has no value on the TP. Everybody is overflowing with toilet paper, rotten eggs, and low-level foods. I have about 20 bank slots full of this stuff and nothing I can do with it but destroy it (to make room for all the Wintersday junk that I will later end up destroying as well).

You craft five patches at a time making the total cost 25 Spools Thread / 4 Gossamer Bolts / 10 Cured Leather not five times that.

Which I find utterly baffling. You craft them five at a time and use them five at a time to make one insignia. What is the benefit of that over crafting one (using the same mats) and using one to produce one insignia? All the introduction of the number “5” does is produce confusion and lead to people making the same mistake that Daroon did. I nearly made the same mistake myself, but double checked what was actually happening.

This is especially confusing when you get to ascended insignia, which require three Damask patches produced one at a time, unlike all the lesser recipes.

Heavy Supply Bag update

in WvW

Posted by: BrettM.9062

BrettM.9062

“Stolen Supplies” bags are dropped by ettins. The different types of bags are unique to particular foes and follow a naming convention with prefixes to indicate the level. The Heavy prefix indicates level 80 foes. For example, “Moldy Bag” bags are dropped only by risen and come with Tiny, Small, Light, etc. prefixes up to Heavy for level 80 risen. “Supply Bag” bags with no other qualifiers (Stolen, Mining, etc.) are dropped only by centaurs.

So it is not much use trying to test just any kind of bag with the word “Supply” or “Supplies” in the name. If the need is for “Heavy Supply Bag” then they must be obtained from level 80 centaurs. I suppose ANet could simply have some other type of foe start dropping them as well, but I would kind of hate to see them start making exceptions to rules that have been reliable in the past. (Programmers will understand why this could lead to future troubles, even if it looks like a good quick-and-dirty fast fix.)

The only two good solutions I see are to either add some level 80 centaurs somewhere or to change the requirement to some other type of heavy bag. The second option seems like it would be easiest to implement.

I don’t know why they chose centaurs in the first place unless it was to limit the available supply, but there must be other level 80 foes that aren’t much more common than level 80 centaurs used to be. IIRC, the alpine BL centaurs had a pretty fast respawn rate. It shouldn’t be that hard to find a level 80 foe in open-world PvE that drops bags at an equivalent rate, or to adjust the drop rate to suit the need.

Honestly, the anti-tagging system just isn’t working very well. Worse, it seems counter-productive.

The only time tag-and-run was truly an aggravating problem was during the one-time mordrem invasion event. Nobody cares about geode farmers doing tag-and-run during Dry Top sandstorm, and I can’t think of any other place/time where it is (or was) routine except on daily event maps.

But tag-and-run on daily event maps was a GOOD thing, since it gave more people a chance to get event credit and finish the daily. We often begged people to tag-and-run there to give others a chance. Now everyone has to hang around for the whole event, making it even harder to tag something before it is obliterated by the crowd.

It seems that ANet managed to solve a non-existent problem by creating a host of new actual problems.

An Intricate Gossamer Insignia now needs the following additional things:

  • 10 Cured Hard Leather Squares
  • 1 Bold of Gossamer
  • 5 Spools of Gossamer Thread

Actually, they removed one bolt of gossamer. It now takes only four instead of five. But that doesn’t make up for the cost of the added leather and thread. Also, it now takes three hardened sections to make a square instead of only two, so 10 squares would take more time/gold than they did before even if the TP price had stayed the same.

arent there 80 centaurs in the dry Top zone?

Yes. And all of them are allies. There are no hostile centaurs in the open world that are above level 45 (Harathi Hinterlands).

Rather than turn the WvW borderlands into a PvE farming zone, I’d rather see centaurs added to some high-level map in the open world. Why couldn’t there be centaurs somewhere in Frostgorge, given that they were found in the Shiverpeaks and Far Shiverpeaks in GW1? Find some corner of the map and tuck in a village of level-80 centaurs equivalent in size to the one in the alpine BL. Or why couldn’t there be centaurs somewhere in the HoT Maguuma Jungle, given that they were found there in GW1?

Ah, I thought it was only the unidentified insects he traded for, but I’ll try this out the next time I complete the track. Thanks for the tip!

It IS the unidentified insects that he wants for the bags. Does the PvP track give identified insects? If so, then ignore my advice. I don’t PvP and just assumed it gave unidentified insects.

Otherwise there is no good use for them. There is no point in making exotics with them for the Mystic Toilet because you can do the same thing just by making weapons with the Nomad inscriptions and leaving out the insects. Putting in the insects gets you ambrite weapons instead of plain weapons, but the MT doesn’t care, so the insects would just be wasted.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mithran’s list is, perhaps, a bit draconian. Yet there are some pretty clueless “mentors” out there “helping” people, and one could almost wish for the tag to be gated behind some test of game knowledge.

I saw a conversation in LA the other day where someone wanted to know where to get boost powder. Someone with a mentor tag directed the questioner to Divinity’s Reach (!!) to see the Black Lion Weaponsmith in the TP there. A real facepalm moment, since it is the Armorsmith that has the powder, not the Weaponsmith, and both of those NPCs are also found right there in the LA TP.

Can you at the very least explain why you want your fully unlocked guild hall yesterday?

Because I don’t get all these newfangled entitled instant gratification lines of thinking.

If someone steals your car, you’re going to put every effort into getting some suitable replacement transportation as quickly as possible. You would not think of that as feeling a newfangled entitlement to instant gratification. Replacing something that was taken from you is not the same as wanting the instant fulfillment of a new desire.

Explain me this though: Why would big guilds be like Wal Mart killing off the smaller guilds? Guilds aren’t competing with eachother. O_o

Aren’t they? Unlike GW1, you can belong to multiple guilds in GW2. Why did “100% rep” guilds exist if they weren’t trying to gain a monopoly over the influence generated by their members? A given player is only going to generate a certain amount of influence, or materials, per day. If multiple guilds want that influence or those materials, each of those guilds is going to have to find a way to induce the player to favor them over the others. Isn’t that competition?

Suggestion: "Mastery Complete" Signal?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I agree. I find it very unfriendly that any XP earned after filling a mastery and unlocking it just disappears into thin air, not being carried over to the next mastery. It doesn’t seem right that you’re deprived of advancement that you’ve actually earned unless you keep a close eye on your progress and unlock a new mastery immediately upon filling the bar.

Which makes me wonder what happens when all masteries are unlocked. Do XP rewards then become totally meaningless, as they were between the change to the new trait system and the release of HoT? Does ANet expect anyone to be happy about that?

Give me my WXP now and don’t make me go out and earn it again, especially when there is little to do before the short-time booster runs out. Even if the map is pretty busy, most of the boost time goes down the drain with the long runs to get anywhere on the new maps.

Even worse, it doesn’t look like the boosts stack in duration. This means that to get the full reward, you have to open one daily chest and save any others until the first boost wears off. If you open all the chests at once, you get less reward. That doesn’t seem to be a very friendly approach to giving out daily rewards.

Critters with yellow names (doe, stag, ram, boar, etc.) do drop loot, but can’t be killed with one hit. I would imagine that a bull with a white name that drops loot has to be remarkably rare.

New Ascended Insignia recipe feedback

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

BrettM.9062

Technically they did reduce the cloth requirement for an ascended insignia. They just didn’t reduce the requirement for damask cloth. But, they never said they would, now did they? We just assumed that was what they meant.

An ascended insignia requires an intricate gossamer insignia in addition to the damask, leather, and other mats. The intricate gossamer insignia now requires only four bolts of gossamer instead of five, so the cloth requirement was reduced by one whole bolt of gossamer! Yay!

Of course, the intricate insignia now also requires 10 hardened leather and five more spools of gossamer thread than it did before.

Net change: remove one bolt of gossamer, add three elonian leather (requiring 33% more thick leather sections than before), 10 hardened leather, and five spools of thread.

People cannot complete the skill points without paying other players?! Oh my this is not going to be good in the long run.

I would be wary of making blanket judgements based on that screenshot.

Yesterday a player in Dry Top was offering to pay someone to lead him to Silverwastes. We posted the links to the Triforge waypoint and fort in Brisban, explaining that there is no direct connection between the two maps. Yet he still wanted someone to lead him. Does that mean that people cannot get to Silverwastes without paying other players? How hard is it to exit Dry Top the same way you came in and run a little bit north, even if you have not previously explored that part of Brisban?

There always seem to be players who don’t want to make even the most trivial of efforts to get what they want, so they offer pay. It isn’t a sign that paying is necessary.

Even worse, since thick leather now requires four sections instead of three, all that extra elonian leather for insignias is going to be more expensive and time-consuming to make.

Honestly, trying to accumulate ascended mats for six characters (soon to be seven) has been like trying to climb Mt. Olympus for the last year or so. It was already more of a multi-generational project than a long-term project. Now the goal posts have been moved, adding months more to the project. Damask Patches?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BrettM.9062

BrettM.9062

An ascended insignia formerly required 3 bolts of damask. An ascended insignia STILL requires 3 bolts of damask, but now also requires 3 elonian leather squares. No reduction in the amount of cloth required so far.

An ascended insignia also requires an intricate gossamer insignia. An intricate gossamer insignia formerly required 5 bolts of gossamer. An intricate gossamer insignia now requires only 4 bolts of gossamer, but now also requires 10 cured hardened leather squares. Also the insignia now requires 25 spools of gossamer thread instead of 20.

So, the net change eliminates one bolt of gossamer while adding 3 elonian leather, 10 hardened leather, and 5 spools of gossamer thread.

ANet giveth with one hand and taketh back with both hands. The expense of ascended insignia just went up dramatically.

Reverse Maize Balm Griefing

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BrettM.9062

BrettM.9062

I have a lot less problem with balm farmers than with the fact that there are certain weapon-master achievements that MUST be farmed. Whose brilliant idea was THAT?

But why do ambients even count towards the weapon master achievements? Getting one of those ought to mean that you actually fought enemies with that particular weapon. How is counting ambient “kills” and different than just using an attack that will go off without even having to have anything targeted?

You don’t have to just fight an enemy with a weapon to get credit for those achievements. You must deliver the “killing blow” with that weapon. That is a whole different kettle of fish. “Killing blow” seems to have a very strict definition. For example, if the last tick of damage that kills the foe comes from bleeding inflicted by a particular weapon skill, that does not seem to count as a killing blow and gives no credit towards the achievement. That means condition builds have a serious disadvantage, but even a DPS build will miss getting credit now and then.

For a main-hand or two-handed weapon, the achievement is no problem. Nobody farms ambients to get weapon master for those because it will come, easily, in the course of normal combat. You will never even notice that some of your kills aren’t actually counting.

For an offhand weapon, however, it is extremely difficult to get a “killing blow”. Because of the long cool down of offhand skills, you must time your use of the offhand very carefully to ensure that it does the last bit of direct damage. The only way to get a guaranteed “killing blow” is to kill something that will die in one hit. I.e., an ambient. Furthermore, given the long cool down, you really need to hit as many ambients as you can with each use of an offhand skill to progress the achievement at an acceptable rate. I.e., you need to be in an ambient-rich environment.

Compounding the problem is the fact that certain offhands are entirely incapable of delivering a “killing blow” in the hands of certain classes. For example, a mesmer cannot progress the achievement for a focus, despite being able to kill with it. I can kill some non-ambients using only the focus’s phantasm, but it does not count as a “killing blow”.

I have never done any ambient farming for weapon mastery. And in three years I have not completed weapon mastery for a single offhand-only weapon. (I have over 3k kills for a couple of them, but under 500 for most.) It’s all well and good to decry the farming of ambients, but I don’t think most people really want to put in years for these achievements, especially when it only takes weeks or months for other weapons. It’s a sadistic system, second only to WvW achievements.

BrettM.9062

I never said in my original post it was the six gods who abandoned the Guild Wars 2 world but that it was ‘us’ and/or the general Guild Wars 2 that abandoned the six gods, that which is quite possibly why they ‘went silent’.

Actually, it was the gods who abandoned the world, not the reverse. Even in Nightfall they told us that it was “your world now” and up to us to take care of Abaddon. We were begging for help and they told us that they were staying out of it. There is no way to color that as us abandoning them. The best light you can put on it is that they were like parents encouraging grown children to leave the nest and start taking on responsibility.

They may have had very good reason to withdraw anyway, knowing about the Elder Dragons. Can you imagine the power an ED might gain if it were able to defeat and consume the magic of one of the gods? Better that the gods stay where the ED can’t get at them! The gods surely knew that the ED were due to start awakening, and that may have been the real motive behind their withdrawal.

If you want to fight a god, perhaps one day Dhuum will break free again. Or perhaps we will finally get the chance to take on Balthazar’s half-brother Menzies, who surely has god-like powers. But no human would want to fight one of the Six, no matter how “cruel” they might seem. No norn, asura, or sylvari would have any reason to do so either. Only the charr might be enthused by the idea of testing themselves against the benefactors of their old foes.

This is a new behavior, whether it is intentional or not, and it is a little disconcerting to see a salvage kit disappear from your “I” window and show up in a bank window that is open behind it. I’m sure we’ll eventually get used to taking the extra time to close the bank window before opening the inventory to salvage, but a little warning of this new behavior would have been nice if it is intentional. Guild Mission/Favor problem for 1-2 p guilds

Posted by: BrettM.9062

BrettM.9062

We’re not asking the devs to give us anything. We’re asking the devs not to take away what we currently have, which is what they’re doing.

I run a 10-person guild, carried over from GW1. Of the 10, one has been MIA for a year now. A couple of others don’t rep. Most of the rest are very casual, logging in only every few weeks. Of the three or four of us who are pretty regular, we are almost never on at the same time.

So, we have never earned a single merit. That’s fine. We’re content with slowly gaining enough influence that I can pop a guild gathering or MF buff for one or two weekends a month, or make a few banners. I can buy an influence scroll now and then to make a few WvW +5 buffs for myself (since I’m the only one who does WvW) to use when I like. Life is good, or at least good enough. But the devs are taking this away from us, leaving us with nothing. Who benefits from that?

What harm is there if we can get some small, shabby shack in the jungle to use as a guild hall? It took us a long time to gain and fit out our GW1 guild hall, but we didn’t hurt anyone by doing so. I don’t think the GW1 devs used up a whole lot of resources better devoted to Real Guilds to make this possible. What is this fiction about the GW2 devs needing to go to extra lengths to accommodate smaller guilds? They made a conscious decision to invent a new system that cuts us off at the knees, and I think we can be pardoned for not being pleased by that.

I’m just not sure if we should wave the white flag on this issue at this point because it seems rather hopeless.

Guild Mission/Favor problem for 1-2 p guilds

If you have 1 person in your guild, you’re not a guild. You’re a person.

If you have 2 people in your guild, you’re not a guild. You’re a couple.

=P

No matter how many people are in my guild, I’m still a person. And your examples become ridiculous very quickly when extended to larger numbers of people.

If you have 3 people in your guild, you’re not a guild. You’re a trio.
If you have 4 people in your guild, you’re not a guild. You’re a quartet.
.
.
.
If you have 100 people in your guild, you’re not a guild. You’re a century.

This kind of silliness proves nothing and doesn’t seem to contribute anything to the discussion.

Guild Mission/Favor problem for 1-2 p guilds

You cant seriously expect to be catered to by ANET, sure you can have your 1 to 2 ‘guild’ but its not really a guild or a community-nothing wrong in being in a guild of 1-2, but asking them to make it so people can have access to everything is ridiculous.

The word “expansion” implicitly promises additions to the game, not deletions of content already available.

What is ridiculous about expecting ANET to continue providing me the same features already provided? I tried to look up what happens to the existing guild vaults (and their contents) when the expansion goes live. I cannot find any mention of it at all. The Twitch TV presentations are ridiculously ineffective. The written information is extremely vague.

Do I have to empty my vaults since no one will have a guild hall?

The apparent removal of content for small guilds bothers me as well.

Sure, the big guilds can run 24/7 buffs, but I’m content with our being able to gather enough influence that I can build us one or two buff weekends per month. After HoT, I’m not sure I’ll still be able to do even that for my guild.

Sure, the big WvW guilds can load up on guild siege and multiple claim buffs. But, as the only member of my guild who does any WvW, I’m content to buy an influence scroll when I have laurels to spare and make a few +5 buffs that I can use as I please, solo, when I cap a camp or stake out a tower and upgrade it. It’s a minor contribution to our world’s efforts, but still appreciated. After HoT, apparently I won’t be able to do that any longer because I don’t have two more guildies with me.

It appears that HoT is going to be a big step backwards for small guilds, cutting us off from even the minor benefits that we enjoy now.

Whats the new key drop rate now?

The drop rate is the same as the drop rate of rain. In the Sahara. During a 100-year drought.

4 Weeks left, still missing a lot of info!

There is a lot of info. on the HoT guild halls page: http://heartofthorns.guildwars2.com/game/guildhalls/

I recommend reading: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/rethinking-guilds/ for upcoming changes to guild currencies. Namely, influence is going bye-bye. You can either make sure you get your unlocks now for guild hall prizes when HoT releases or save your influence to speed crafting of the new guild hall stuff.

I have read those long since. Yes, I know I have a choice. I can get unlocks now … but some unlocks “won’t be making the transition” according to those sources, so it would be self-defeating to spend influence on them at this point. Yes, I will be able to save influence to speed crafting of new guild hall stuff (which is not exactly the same thing as our influence going “bye-bye” and vanishing into thin air). How much should we save and how much should we spend now on unlocks that we may or may not find preferable to the new stuff? What will the new stuff cost and do we have enough influence to make a dent in those costs vs. spending it now on unlocks that may or may not transition?

Your sources do not give me enough information to make these decisions rationally. While they give certain examples of what will transition, what will be lost, and what will be changed to a greater or lesser extent, the information is still somewhat vague. What I’m asking for is enough information to make plans, given to us with enough time to actually implement those plans.

Small Guilds earning Favor/GH in HoT

Use all of your influence now, because new guild currencies doesnt include it. You can transfer some of it into one of the new currencies, but i dont think it will be anything major.

I’m less interested in what other players think will happen than in knowing what ANet plans to happen. I have no way of knowing what you consider “major”. I have no way of knowing how much “some of it” amounts to, or whether the amount of influence we have now is over or under the limit you think will be convertible. I have no way of knowing whether being able to convert “some” influence to new currencies later will work out better for us than spending it all on unlocks now. I’m not sure how you know we won’t be able to buy anything with these new currencies that we will prefer over the things we can unlock now, or that the new currencies will not be harder for us to earn than the influence we already have accumulated.

I would rather base my actions on facts and numbers than on airy hand-waving based on vague, undefined terms.
