Welcome to the internet, and life, where people can and will be kittens.

Also from a MMO standpoint the community is quite tame, probably one of the better ones I’ve seen. The only toxicity I’ve seen is in LFG pugs, but that’s a different story.

Decent game for what its designed for, but nothing that would cause literal tears. Lets not go overboard.

There is a chance for success and a chance for failure. In the same way people buy hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of lottery tickets and don’t win, and those who buy 1 and win.

When it comes to gambling you should always expect to lose, and do so with that in mind. If you feel you can afford to lose 300g with the chance in mind then so be it, but if you are doing so thinking you will profit or ensure success then I would just save up and buy it outright.

thats why i don’t like this train of thought. we as a community should think n demand affordable nice items for all. we should NOT be held as hostage to the powerful 1% who monopolize certain markets. it is a game u play for fun. u don’t play to become a 2 tiers slave

Anet could always switch the game to a sub, and all dyes can be added in as content rewards. Anets business model is based off of cosmetics and creating rarity in cosmetics to drive spending on either gems or gold converting,

Comparing RL rich vs poor and GW2 market manipulation is silly. Anything that has a finite amount will always fluctuate in price, also giving the option to market manipulate is part of the game or really any market. Not to mention spending 240g(original price) on a dye isn’t what I would consider poor.

what about now its 950 gold now. what do u think about that price? fair?

Fair is about what people are willing to pay, if people don’t feel 950g is fair they won’t buy it and it should go down in price.

The problem that I have with your 1% vs 99% comparison is you are trying to compare apples and oranges. The issue with wealth inequality has to do with the wealthy controlling almost all aspects of wealth generation as well as consumption. This creates a caste system in which unless you are within that 1% the chances you getting there are slim because they control not only the cost but also the income ability.

Buying a luxury item is not the same as being controlled in a cycle of poor/stagnant income mixed with cost of living controlled from the same group.

Probably around 40-60$. Really the issue isn’t how much but on what, impulse sucks so wasting gems on 2 full cosmetic kits(one I didn’t care for the result), black wings(only used on 1 character), Dye kits(RNG items are really a petty cash grab), and top hat/ring master hat(will never regret these purchases) makes me realize it isn’t worth it.

Is There New Content Coming ?

My guess is their main development focus is HoT, so outside of Gem Store items its pretty much maintance mode till release.

Though I think what people need to realize, is that GW2 isn’t developed, content wise, to be a consistently played game. Meaning it is built around casual gameplay, not playing 4-5 hours a day for years on end. If you play that much or for too long you will always run out of content early.

The resources to keep game servers online are fairly inexpensive these days. That’s why games like Guild Wars (the first one) are still running despite having very few players. So while it is true that games are shut down eventually, they can and often do last a long time after a subscription game would have had its plug pulled since the players that stick around are typically the ones who were funding it anyway.

It depends really. However in regards to GW1 I don’t think its because of cost or income. It isn’t uncommon for a company to keep a legacy game running in order to promote a new version in the franchise.

Theory?

They launched GW2 as a hybrid B2P with a F2P model by relying mostly on cosmetic sales to sustain income while releasing smaller LS content. The mentality of limited gem items is to build hype to drive sales.

Though…

The model hasn’t worked well and they are reverting back to a expansion based model while limiting focus on cosmetics and LS. This also might be the reason they recently decided to scrap selling future armor skins and just do outfits.

At least thats my theory.

They are doing something. They’re making an expansion. Most games have a large downturn in population before an expansion and it picks up after the expansion launches. Anyway I’m sure Anet knows this and has plans for other stuff.

The concern should be if HoT is too little too late to get players back or keep them. Summertime player fluctuation is common in MMOs.

Its not really a surprise that low AP players want to skip or try for a psuedo speed run. Majority of LFG runs are exp req. speed runs, and with the toxicity that is involved new players need to take what they can get to try and learn how to get into the common speed runs. It seems to be the nature of Dungeons in GW2.

Speed run, zerker, and exp req or gtfo. Which leaves little room for new players or players who don’t know the dungeons to learn them. One of the reasons I’ve stayed away from them other then a few storyline ones for PVP tracks. Never actually done a group path or fractal.

I think it’s more a generational thing, and why so may genX’ers, baby boombers and wwii gens dog on millennials /shrugs (I like some). And sadly, RMT item shops target them and revolve game development on how they can pull millennials into spending tons of cash (and they DO!) cha-ching. [Repent, the end is nigh].

This is partially true but not completely millennials fault. As a older millennial, I grew up playing games like UO(tail end really), EQ1/EQ2, Eve Online, WoW(initial release wasn’t as bad as it is now). Having a game that is more about the progression/effects then the reward was always more interesting. However saying that, many millennials especially the younger ones, really have only grown up around instant gratification or cash shop style games.

One could say the market created this mentality, however personally I blame developers, mainly around the beginning of DLCs. They created the atmosphere of easy access at a lower cost. This allows for Devs to make games at a cheaper cost while milking every dime they can through cash shops. Not to mention with the prolificacy of F2Ps it isn’t really a surprise that players jump around games. Most studios don’t want to check the norm and only make easy access games. GW2 for example is the epitome of theme park games.

No risk, no gates, no loss, yet people wonder why they get bored.

worked for gw1 so could have worked for gw2 possible, we will never know

your opinion about b2p and f2p comparison has nothing to do with the case – this game is b2p and saying otherwise is a plain lie

for a b2p game I would expect less cash shop focus and more content focus – especially paid content; I am not surprised with the OP. The gem store focus is out of proportion for last months. We know they’re working on expansion however some people are not happy with gem store focus and the amount of content added to gem store was bigger than real, meaningful content to play.

And no, living story 2 is not content but just a personal story extension with no real gameplay into it.

So please take into consideration people want to pay for content, not just skins and even worse – outfits.

When comparing GW1 and GW2 its obvious Anet didn’t want to go that route, my guess is they wanted to avoid having to release cash gated content, which is why they went with cosmetic heavy route. Now if this was a good or bad choice is unknown, though its obvious their current model isn’t working.

In regards to the F2P comparison is that since Anet DIDN’T go with content heavy cash shop and instead a cosmetic heavy makes it more inline with F2Ps then B2Ps. This is why I keep bringing it up. What you want and what Anet decided to do, are obviously at odds. It still doesn’t mean that GW2 isn’t a hybrid B2P/F2P that uses initial costs to act as a revenue surge, then sustain income via cosmetic cash shop, while releasing LS as the only cash content outside of initial. However with the failure of LS2 and the limited aspect of LS1 showed this system is flawed which is why they seem to be breaking away from that model and back into a expansion based system.

However development takes time, and Anet still needs revenue in the mean time, which is why they are still going to rely on cosmetics until they can get a working model running.

I also don’t disagree with the lack of content, or that the cosmetic heavy model isn’t sustainable and is bad, I’m just looking at things rationally.

To put it into another perspective, single player games range from $50-60 and usually yield 30-60 hours worth of gameplay. GW2 being $50 initially with no other costs, means after 30-60 hours the initial cost of the game is irrelevant.

I detest this argument, and want to throw up every time I see it.

According to this, F2P games are the best thing ever, and can only be beaten by if you are a QA tester, and you even get paid for playing. Right….

If you really want to measure the “worth” of a game, please insert stuff like “level of enjoyment”, “saturation”, “personal gain” etc..

As much as you may detest the argument, it doesn’t take away from the fact that B2P revenue stream is primarily based off of Cash shop and not initial purchase, in the way F2Ps are. If not then Anet might as well made a SP game and avoided paying server costs and devs. The measure is cost comparison, since saturation and enjoyment are subjective.

this is not f2p game
kkthxbye

The business models are relatively the same. The difference is the initial cost allow for the devs to avoid doing more gameplay invasive cash shop items in order to generate revenue. So the balance between cash shop items(in this case cosmetics) and cosmetics via content will still always lean towards cash shop similar to F2Ps.

Also this game is not F2P, it costs $50 to buy it. That is alot of money. To put it into perspective, in some countries that is all you get paid each week.

To put it into another perspective, single player games range from $50-60 and usually yield 30-60 hours worth of gameplay. GW2 being $50 initially with no other costs, means after 30-60 hours the initial cost of the game is irrelevant.

It’s been a couple of years for some of us, there are a lot of things to do but we’ve already done them. Most of the new stuff goes straight to the gem store or TP, hence the grinding.

Because they can generate outfits much quicker and cheaper than they can content. They are already developing new content via HoT, however they still need to sustain income while they develop it.

The time it takes to develop a armor skin =/= the time it takes to develop content. Plus the gem store is a source of income for Anet, which keeps the game a float, this should be a given when playing any F2P/B2P that there will be more consistent additions to a cash shop then there is ingame in regards to cosmetics.

Though no argument with outfits.

E: Usually the smaller the game the better the community and the larger the worse. GW2 does have a good community for its size though.

GW2 has no need for leveling

It also had no need for a lot of other standard MMO “features,” like stats on gear — and yet we have them. Why is that? Could it be that ANet decided to try to attract MMO fans other than just sticking with their fan-base from GW?

Apples and oranges. Gear stats allow for diversity as well as goals, while I don’t disagree there are other elements of “standard MMOs” that aren’t needed in GW2, but leveling is one that seems counter intuitive.

Leveling is generally used in MMOs as a timegate for endgame content, since Gw2 is “all endgame” it makes leveling almost harmful. Since after spending time leveling and finally hitting cap you are faced with the idea that everything you did while leveling is in fact all you will do at cap. This is why you get so many “Just hit 80, what now?” threads.

E: Also cannot comment on the comparison to GW1 since I only tried it out years ago, but never actually got into it(for whatever reason), and really don’t remember it at all.

Proposed change to repair NPC

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: BrooksP.4318

BrooksP.4318

They need to either add back in a repair cost or just remove repair in general. If they added back in the cost, it would at least function as a gold sink, with how it is currently it is pointless.

They took away the charge for repair as ANet felt the cost of way pointing to and then back after having your gear repaired was enough of a gold sink, and found that new players didn’t like being triple tapped in the pocket every time they had to repair. It was done in the name of player retention. Telling people they have to pay again would annoy people, and go against the player retention data ANet have.

In short it will never go back to a gold sink.

If new player retention was the issue(which I doubt it was), there is a very common and simple solution to that. Repair costs only apply when you reach X level. However as stated they should either add it back in or remove it, because right now it’s a pointless “feature” that seems to exist only to annoy.

GW2 has no need for leveling, and really hurts the game more so then helps. Having zones that are level based only creates the mentality that after you surpass the level req. that zone is no longer needed. Gw2 could easily survive and be better imo, if they removed levels, used the PS as a tutorial, and revamped Tyria to mimic more of a sandbox style world.

GW is already on steam, which means NCSoft isn’t completely against the idea. However they probably don’t see the need at the moment to do so. Some publishers put older games on steam after they’ve already lost the surge of normal sales, kindof a last ditch effort to get players.

Either that or NCSoft didn’t like how things turned out with GW1 and decided against repeating it with GW2.

6 Char Slots
5 Level 80s(Guardian, Ele, Mesmer, Necro, Engi)
1 BL Key Farmer(Was told this was legal, if not I will stop asap).

Guardian- Plan on focusing on dungeons and/or Fractals.

Please increase base run speed!

BrooksP.4318

LOL

Is there any discussion in on this site that is not full of illogical strawman arguments?

In most other (modern) MMOs we have mounts as a method of speed increase. In SWTOR, base run speed was increased, even though there were mounts in the game due to feedback from players, they also added multiple forms of purchasable speed increases.

To me, GW2 is in a similar state. The default run speed feels too slow. I would venture to say the majority of the population feels the same, since they either slot increases, run boosters or food buffs, or come on the forums to ask for mounts.

Feels too slow is subjective. I can only base this on the hundreds of games I have played over the years. One could argue it is a result of map sizes, character sizes, or it could just be the base physics of the game. It could the interactions of all of these things in the game world.

To me, in-combat speed feels like a slightly slower walk than is typical in games, which makes normal speed feel like a slow power walk, and +25% feels close to normal Run.

I don’t care what form a speed increase comes in, whether it is a PvE only mount, a base speed increase, or a cheap craftable PvE only item/food. They can leave PvP out, we know these things are easily split.

I don’t see how it will hurt anyone.

In regards to PVE, keeping speed low is a way to incentivise, Waypoint usage which works as a gold sink(while minor it adds up), they also probably have the mindset that it helps promote group events, instead of people flying by at 200% speed.

If switched in WvW you will just end up with the reverse, professions without a good cripple will be the same as those with poor run speed.

If they increase the base, then people will want that increased, it would be a never ending cycle. While you lose stats compared to others, its leveling, so it doesn’t hurt much at all, plus the runes are relatively cheap.
