Point being, no side in this (or any) debate holds a monopoly on irrationality, doom-saying, self-absorption, etc. and so on.

You’re wrong. There’s an obvious monopoly in who’s being irrational, who’s doom preaching, and which side is being entirely self-absorbed over this. It’s very discernible.

If you don’t see that, you’re pretending not to see it. Trying to be objective in the face of reality. That never works out, by the way. It makes you a liar.

It emboldens for better or for worse the majority you pretend to diminish in being falsely objective.

Lol O’Reilly. I take it you’re a fan of his?

BioWare.
Mythic.
Blizzard.

Do I need to continue?

And your point is?

Anet hasn’t joined those ranks. We have Anet today because they parted from Blizzard.

If you then fail to provide that selling point, or take it away, or even appear to be planning to do so, a significant negative backlash, ranging in degrees from reserved disappointment to full-on O’Reilly “we’ll do it live!” flip-out, should not come as a shock to anyone.

Even O’Reilly kept it professional when the camera turned on. Some of the clowns here are in flip out mode 24/7. That is surprising, albeit entertaining.

It betrays any point they may have when they objectively deny the facts and continue to push their hysterics and fear mongering as a matter of fact.

This content update can’t come soon enough. When it get’s here and the sky didn’t fall, prepare your kittens.

They’re going to be bathed in the bitter waters of shame, lathered and shampooed with the soap of exposure; showing a great many of you as a bunch of alarmist pissant fanboys.

Also, they’re going to tear up your arms. Cats hate baths.

(Speaking generally here, and not specifically at you Hydrophidian. You’re being relatively reasonable about it. Thanks.)

A.nets own fault.

It’s not Anet’s fault that you don’t read but small tidbits and blindly follow the majority off a cliff.

No one to blame for that but yourself.

It’s the fault of the illiterate and likely teenage majority who have problems with reading comprehension, context, and general trust issues.

Also, they’re working on culling. But you’d know that if you could be bothered to do a little research and read up on what Anet’s doing.

They’re pretty open and honest about these things, in spite of what you think is true in your own little world.

I am thinking for myself, btw.

It looks an awful lot like the hysterical bunch around here is doing your thinking for you. At least it seems that way.

If that’s not the case, well, okay. It is dully noted that you are thinking for yourself.

That you find yourself in agreement with the majority negative around here, and that you share almost the exact same misguided sentiments.

Way to think for yourself.

What is not likely about WvW changing?

Chris Whiteside didn’t specify anything concrete except they have something in the works. And who is Chris Whiteside anyway? I am hysterical, because I don’t have faith in ANet and they do not want to share us their “DESIGN GOALS”.

Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director

Let that sink in for a moment.

I don’t want to come off like I’m picking on you, it’s certainly not just you.

So very many people on this forum are reacting exactly like you are.

You’re misinformed. You’re letting your fear of what is to come get to you based on what other people are saying.

What they are saying is not necessarily true.

90% of it is fear mongering utter bunk with no basis in the matter of fact, let alone an informed opinion.

To these I say think before you reply. Read before you react. Think for yourself.

Given enough gold, you can get better runes and backbacks that what was provided post-halloween – This does not invalidate people’s investment.

Now with new update, exotics (equipment plateau) is going to be outclassed by ascended – This is radically a new tier, with new possibilities to be abused.

You had to be there for the backpacks and earn them via the scavanger hunt, you can’t buy them.

What you had before those runes are invalidated by the new runes you want to buy. You’re investing more money, so your initial investment was invalidated.

What’s your argument here? Do you want free ascended gear? Lucky for you, I know how to get free ascended gear. I wrote a spiffy guide for it.

So here’s how.

Fancy event coming up, no one has the gear yet, hook up with some friends/guildies… important part…

Have fun.

???

Free ascended gear. You can now stroll this dungeon like a boss whenever you feel like it.

You’re welcome.

Too much of halloween items are going to spoil the market too, thats why it is a time-limited festival.

No, it isn’t. There are near infinite halloween items on the market. A large number of people have the recipes for everything you can craft.

But Ascended gears are going to change how you PvP

Not likely. Did you read the recent announcement from Chris Whiteside by chance?

Should really slow everyones roll. They are listening to you. They clarified and offered you reassurance. What more can they do?

But alright, don’t let reason get in the way of your mass hysterics.

But Ascended gears are going to change how you build your character

Only if you’re a pedant about really minimal numbers.

You know, that idea (calculator wars) everyone says they hate right now, but will turn around and do in a heart beat for the mad skillz edge in combat.

And for every one of you talking out two sides of your mouth, you’re weak. You know who you are.

But Ascended gears are going to change how you find dungeon buddies

Absoultely false. Read the blog post. This isn’t WoW.

But Ascended gears are going to—

Halloween did not introduce gear with stats greater than Exotic, it just introduced some pretty rad skins and a limited-time dungeon..thing.

I’m pretty sure the Halloween thing went off pretty well. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seemed like a success, people liked it.

And it didn’t introduce mudflation to the game.

Imagine.

New runes that could arguably compete/be better (superiors) then the current gear prior to the halloween update.

New halloween jewels in the upper levels which can be better then some of the jewels at launch.

Two new backpack items that blow away anything before level 80.

Where were the gear treadmill criers and tier grinding prophets then? How did those items effect the meta? Was it the end of the world then?

Were people excluded from this gear? Didn’t most twitchy folks buy the recipes on day one of the event?

Are people demanding you have this gear or GTFO? Is it necessary at all? Again, this game isn’t WoW. It doesn’t work the same way.

Anet was even kind and considerate to the folks who couldn’t even experience it because of Hurricane Sandy, let alone the gamers who were able to attend.

Was anyone left out?

A company that considers it’s fan base over the weather in a certain part of the country might deserve the benefit of the doubt.

(Not the first time they’ve done such a thing either. They have a history of that.)

The halloween event was a success. This new content update will be no different.

I have to wonder if some of you folks even read the blog post, more over then just looked at the pictures and flipped your desks.

I’m imagining that. It makes me laugh.

On the other hand, I know some people don’t have fun in GW2 after getting the best gear currently so if you wish to spend more time playing MMOs, I think WoW would be a suitable alternative as I am sure some people have grinded 7 years of their life to have a very powerful character. For them, I am sure they are happy and had fun, but some of us don’t want to do that and are glad that GW2 is casual friendly where you can have fun and do everything GW2 has to offer currently with the gear that you have.

Yeah, you never played the original Guild Wars.

But yes, it was a blast, it still is a blast and I’m still happily signing in to this day. I prefer the GW1 set up to the GW2 one in some things. Still need to finish up my HoM for pretty shiny things.

That said, I’ve been having a blast in GW2 for all the reasons you mention.

You have no reason to believe the new content update will do anything to effect that equilibrium beyond conjecture and forum hysteria, based on some jewelry and a new backpack item.

For some perspective, the halloween event did all of the things the new content update is due to bring gear wise. How did they handle it?

Consider that.

Eh. They’ve been going seven years strong, seven years they’ve maintained their integrity.

If NCsoft was going to make them compromise it, you think they’d have done that by now.

That said, I’m otherwise going to agree with your assessment and keep faith until it’s all out there.

If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. That’s the end of that. But there’s no precedent there, no honest reason to think Anet is going to throw away seven years of integrity.

Anet deserves my trust and good faith unless they prove otherwise. They haven’t yet.

This notion that the developers have infallible data and/or interpret data objectively is a huge fallacy.

So in other words, the creators of the game have no clue what to do with their own games data. It could even be wrong!

But the data that they may collect isn’t objective. I’m to assume it may be biased, perhaps to the creators own vision and design.

Fancy that.

Based on some of the stats they’ve released, I’m fairly certain they have a better handle on their data then anyone else does.

Or you can put on your tin hat and choose not trust them.

Assume that they’re lying for some strange reason that doesn’t benefit them at all, and compare them unfairly to the LOTRO devs.

Based on some of the sigs I’m seeing, I would suppose I’m in a minority. Anet hasn’t yet given me any reason to distrust them.

Anets in a very small circle of game devs I genuinely trust. I have to honestly wonder why some of you think you can’t trust Anet.

I’m not talking about blind fanboyism, holding their feet to the fire is a good thing. But what I’m seeing is just irrational.

Are you really throwing out all your faith over this coming content update based on so very little? Life must be really hard for some of you.

Numerous developers have admitted in the past in other mainstream games that forum whining did affect their choices, and sometimes, led them to believe that the majority wanted something that simply was not the case.

Well taking a note from that, I sure hope Anet doesn’t listen to the greater part of this lot here.

Might end up with something like the LOTRO fiasco or no new meaningful content period, lest we upset the forum philosophy of anything new being bad, too hard, too easy, not inclusive, too inclusive…

There’s a smell in the air here. It smells of paranoia and burnt out WoW gamers.

Tread lightly, lest the addition of a new backpack item and some jewelry bring about the end of our beloved game.

There must be a black hole, or a secret map somewhere on my server that I don’t know about then. Sure, Orr is busier than other areas, but the population there is not even close to accounting for all the other areas.

The point is, ArenaNet has all the numbers, not us. Something that happened in those numbers must have been so great that it made ArenaNet forget about one of their core pillars of GW2’s design. The guess that is so obvious it just begs to be made: a huge population drop.

Your operating on the assumption that Anet broke one of their own philosophies. That remains to be seen and it isn’t likely.

Do you play at normal times or do you play at odd times? Are you playing on a high, low, mid population server?

Is your server more PVP prone then PVE? Weekdays VS Weekends? All of this factors into what you see in the world.

Unless you have on your tin foil hat like my good buddy pal Kript, the game is still objectively going strong based on the market data.

This new update just might be… GASP… fun new content that isn’t going to completely change the game dynamic.

There’s no honest reason to believe that they’re going to break any of their core design pillars and general philosophies to making the games that they have done so to date, consistently.

Have a little faith… or at least wait until it gets here so that you have the matter of fact on your side.

Not your friend, but ok.

Okay sweet honey biscuit, I understand. I’m sorry I called you a friend.

I see the fact that they are introducing a new tier of gear so ppl will have more things to do isnt a fact that indicate they are having problem keeping players, i might have to point out that nearly all lower lvl zone except queensdale have very few players doning event which means theyre hardly getting new players, at least not enough so hey can stick to the agenda and leave the gear tier as it is.

Cool story bro. So, can I get some facts with that? You getting this from your in game experiences? Got some hard numbers for me? Got a dev in the know about these things?

I have a lot of things I want to accomplish. But I don’t like that I might be barred from new content because I don’t have the next new tier of gear.

Annnd… where has that ever happened in game now?

Beyond maybe a few elitist puggles that generally hate each other and ragequit if someone didn’t get the trap switch before they all wiped?

We’re all obviously starting this content without the ascended gear. I’m sure you have guildies to play with who aren’t going to hold your shortcomings against you.

Even if not people in this game are, generally, very forgiving and willing to have you.

At least so far and in my experiences. Organized PVP might have an axe to grind with you if you aren’t wearing perfect stats and gear for your role and that’s understandable.

But PVE wise, no, only the most asinine of folks will do that and they generally stink themselves.

The problem I’m starting to see is that every complainer here seems to be measuring this new content according to WoW. GW2 isn’t WoW.

They’re similar in that they’re both MMOs and have dungeon raiding elements, but that’s about where the comparison stops.

Sales aren’t meeting their expectation.

I don’t know where people are getting this idea that the game isn’t selling, when every measure out there says it is still doing great. The game is consistently in the top 10 pc games sold on Amazon, often top 5 and the UK PC sales charts it is #4 this week and top 5 on Greenmangaming.com. And that is with a ‘tun’ of new games out and coming out in the next week+, from Football Manager to Hitman, AC3, N4S Most Wanted, Halo 4, Darksiders II and Black Ops 2, not to mention XCOM: EU, Borderlands 2, Dishonored and Torchlight 2 all still selling very well. It is a crowded field, and GW2 is doing great, it’s outselling the new WoW expansion on every list above as well and if it was on Steam it’d have been top 10 every week for the last 2.5 months.

Bro, you want an evidence why this game ISN"T doing great?

I happen to have a ton.

But here, I’ll just give you one, because I have said this times and times again but people dont seem to listen.

If the game is doing FINE, everything is all well and good, Anet isn’t losing players rapidly, why are they going back on their words and introduce a new tier of armor with better stats?

Because they want to pizz off the majority to cater the minority?

No.

Because they’re not doing fine. Because the actual majority is getting bored.
Other wise, they would not have made this change, would they?

PS. If they’re selling so well, it’s probably because people heard about the new expansion.

Cool story bro. Can I have facts with that? New content is new content, and new stuff comes with new content. This new gear isn’t going to be impossible to get.

It’s not legendary tier, which is entirely cosmetic.

It’s really not a departure from their design philosophy at all. It’s a new set of armor. This new gear isn’t a carrot you can’t reach.

It’ll be relatively sane to get. If it isn’t, you may have a point then. I however trust Anet’s unblemished track record in that regard.

Many folks are already level 80, something Anet didn’t expect much of it’s community to get around to so fast. Ergo, new content for you. You should be happy!

Instead, you and other folks like you, are always ever wary of Anet as though they’ve already done some barely forgivable thing.

And so you’re cautiously watching and carefully scrutinizing every little thing they do.

Relax.

How about we wait for the content to actually come out before we get the pitchforks and torches? Maybe?

The rest of the folks I know are pretty pumped for this new release so soon after launch. I’m sure we’ll see you in game.

Seriously...it's getting really annoying when...

While i understand why anet have installed a system like this, however, by doing so, it really removes the tactics of some professions.

Just because the monster can’t reach you, they become invulnerable. Wow, really?
I really don’t mind the invulnerable on bosses/champions but on regular thrash, that’s just crap.

They could fix this by doing one of these options
1. Code the mobs so that if they can’t reach you, then they run away.
2. If you kill a monster from a higher ground (where the monster would normally be invulnerable), there’s a big penalty to your loot/xp % gain.

That would be fair. Except on that second one, it must be an exp penalty.

Don’t take away the loot. That’s mean. I would prefer a better solution, but that would be a nice quick fix in the mean time. Assuming it were that easy.

What to expect for a new Ele

Is glass cannon anything really the best way to go in WvW?

It seems like everyone and their mom is running max damage builds. I can understand the thought process behind it, but I’m not sure I like that WvW is that simple in terms of character variation.

It isn’t. Glass cannon builds are niche and if you ever catch one alone, they’re always dead… excluding thieves if they play their cards right. Maybe.

You definitely need some decent damage, but the way everyone wants to roll a glass cannon is folly. And then people turn around and complain why fights seem to last about two seconds.

People are funny.

Don’t underestimate the earth and water lines for survivability. Don’t try to be an ele tank (that’s for a specialty build with conjure earth shield), but don’t neglect these lines.

The elementalist does multitasking to the point of it being essential to be at the top of your class; you can’t be “just” a fire ele or an air ele.

You also have to juggle a little support now and then with earth and water, and generally play with everything else you have.

The elementalist attunements are synonymous with the other classes weapon swaps. You must make effective use of all of them or you will be subpar.

If that kind of play style befits you (‘elementalist’ gives off the idea you’re awesome with all the elements, not just one) or if you can get into that mindset, you’ll find the elementalist is very powerful.

A heavy learning curve compared to some of the other classes, but very rewarding.

Another tip, something you might want to do is carry many different kinds of weapons with you.

Even though the ele can’t weapon swap mid-combat, different weapon combos are suited to different kinds of playing styles.

You can’t swap in the middle of combat like many of the other classes, but you can re-equip yourself in a moment of clam.

Are you playing in a group? Staff is generally helpful to everyone. Another ele playing staff already in your group? Go dagger or scepter.

Scepter and dagger work well if you’re solo and don’t have to worry about other folks/don’t have the breathing room to launch the staffs massive but slow AoEs.

You have to adapt and kind of get a feel for it and your potential comrades. It’s sort of hard to explain, but it becomes second nature after a while.

You’re really beating yourself up about that aren’t you mate? I thought your map was great.

I was soured myself over all the (super) negative feedback, that was neither constructive nor helpful, just a bunch of complaining and ‘QQ I can’t do it’.

That said, I acknowledge that some folks were courteous, kind, and honest with their complaints and do have a point or two with regards to the difficulty and some minor glitches.

As for myself, overall I didn’t find it impossibly hard. I finished it like two or three times in the span of an hour after initially struggling with it when it first came out.

On a difficulty scale of 1 to 10, I’d give it around a 7 or 8. It was nice overall and it was an hour or two well spent. Thank you for such an interesting map and jump puzzle.

For the buyer, always the buyer. There will never ever be a time that this market becomes a sellers market. There will never ever be a time that there will be incentive for crafting. That makes crafting an obsolete part of the game, might as well remove it.

See, it’s bits like this that make you come off as very confused or just outright angry. I’m not sure if you realize just how ridiculous you sound right here.

I assume you’re a smart enough guy, so I’m banking on the later.

That kind of thing doesn’t help your case. It just makes you look impulsive and immature, ignorant at worst.

Come on now. Do you really believe that?

They should have some sort of economic education before being allowed to participate or something… Same for the internet. Stupid people just bug me ><

Irony.

Being free to fail is an education. The trading post is very simple to figure out.

You have to move with the market, the market won’t (or very rarely) bend for you. That your craft is doing badly atm isn’t a permanent thing.

People will eventually realize that the cost of their materials + the final product is worth more then what they’re selling it for and people will realize they’re losing money.

Some of them.

If not, then you can become all the richer for it.

Or maybe materials will cheapen with time and everything will go down. Or the reverse. Or maybe things will remain the same and some folks will have to adapt.

It’s a young market. Anything can happen.

Problem is, ANet thinks that’s the greatest thing about their trading post.

Because it is. Really.

A buyers market just isn’t fun for any seller. Why should I craft you something nice when I end up losing money because mat cost + market fees take that away from me. There’s no incentive for me to craft anything. If you don’t call that a problem with the market then its a problem for crafting because why did I waste my time getting my craft level up if I cant use it for profit. I don’t care that my craft is level 400, that’s just a number, I want money that I can spend and do things with.

You just sound confused and angry that you can’t turn a profit on the market right this moment. I have.

But maybe what you’re trying to sell in particular isn’t doing well just then and indeed, people out there are selling at a loss.

Question is, what’s that to you? Who’s fault is that?

If people want to lose money, that’s up to them. There’s nothing you can do about other people. OP described a legitimate reason for themselves doing that.

By not participating and not selling your item for a loss, you save. Hooray for you!

You won’t be able to turn a profit with your craft until the people get smarter and realize they’re taking a loss.

Not everyone thinks like OP, and yes, OP is losing money objectively just the same.

Not many folks want to lose money. They want to turn a profit. You by not taking a profit loss have lost nothing.

You don’t have a problem.

Just a bad time for your product right now. The game isn’t even a month old yet. Wait it out. Let the economy mature a bit maybe?
