People like actual Variance in builds not cookie cutter. Unfortunately this game doesn’t support this right now.

so thats why every noob in this game runs Zerker.

I wish this were true. 90% of puggers join with PVT or Cleric or Knight’s gear, running a “support” weapon doing kitten damage. So keep living in a fantasy world where most “noobs” run around in zerker gear. If this were the case, I wouldn’t hate pugging so much.

Just watch a video of a path before running it. And follow closely. Just join a group with a easy going LFG post and let them know you have are very inexperienced at this dungeon. Generally if you aren’t dumb and didn’t join an “Experienced only Group”, you should be alright. I started doing arah when I was at like 800 AP. Doing p1-3 every day after that point got me all the experience I needed.

Edit – Cats, what do you run on honor? Aria?

Yes sir. For Time Warps or keeping my warrior friends from breaking a hundred blades, I block all the time with Retreat. The cool down reduction is pro for maximizing my blocks.(as well as power resing if someone gets sloppy in lupi)

group support much like DPS much maximized but not above DPS unless you are trying to get carried. s.

If you think that build is a “get carried type build” then I really am done talking about this subject.

Cat Has Ducks.1982

Edit:
@Cat Has Ducks Not true. Actually in almost all dungeon builds you should be trying to maximize DPS while retaining group support if needed. Theoretically any dungeon like COF I would run that build just for the increased damage which is noticeable due to the 30 crit damage you get out of it (see above). If you are going to put points in Virtue and Honor then you have to put them there realizing the opportunity cost in reference to your DPS. The reason you have to put them there has to be so good you are willing to kitten your DPS in effect (something as i said I wonder is really worth it in a competent group with 1 free utility spot for support skills). Remember you can trade out utilities up to 2 slots because smite conditions is on a low CD.

10/30/0/10/20 is great dps. Running Sword Focus/GS I get RHS which give 15% crit chance, 10% damage on enemies with conditions, 10% damage vs burning enemies, 5% extra damage with swords, apply vulnerability with blinds, and all while still bringing what makes a Guardian special. Nothing important is gained in Valor in my eyes. Extra crit damage is generally taken care of with food and Banner of Dis. If you are going into valor for just the crit damage modifier alone, then that is a poor choice IMO.

Cat Has Ducks.1982

Right now I am running 10 25 30 5 0. So far I find it good on burst but not insanely

This isn’t a dungeon build right? Looks like some kind of World Boss type setup.
For dungeons, the Meditations suck because you have to trait 20 into Valor if you want access to that pitiful fury amount. The important trait lines are 10 in honor for shouts, 10 in virtues for consecrations, 15 in Radiance for blind spam and the other points are generally spent to aid in condi removal and dps. I feel like what you lose to gain the fury is crap.

Having said that, I will use smite condition if I need the extra condi removal. For that 2nd to last boss in Arah P2 I bring Purging Flames, Smite Condition, and Wall of Reflect. Smite Condition is a bit of a selfish skill, but I always seem to be a bleed magnet on that fight. So one Meditation isn’t bad like SC with its small cooldown for trash runs and such(also requires no traiting and is instant now!). But to invest 20 points into that line is detrimental in my eyes for dungeons.(WvW Solo Roaming Bursting should be fun though)

Spider Queen's poison aoe?

Cat Has Ducks.1982

Thank you, i’ll test that out soon.

So just to be sure, it wasn’t because of the ranger wasn’t meleeing it right? It’s because of someone moved/dodged away from the Queen’s range? So annoying because this guild mate keeps insisting that its because we’re not 100% melee.

Exactly. Even small movements away from her can cause it. So be very careful about how about how much movement you do. I generally just stay glued in that corner.(With a few times of accidentally going into her, but that doesn’t cause anything except making her move closer).

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Cat Has Ducks.1982

Cat Has Ducks.1982

Its about being at range. The stacking makes sure everyone is close to her, so she doesn’t do her AOE bombs. If you want to test this, do the stack again, and midway through killing her, begin walking away from her and watch the AOE begin to pour. You can melee her anywhere and not cause the AOE, but stacking makes sure people stay nice and close.

Yep, happens all the time. Everytime we get one or two pugs for a run, we hear “omg, that was so fast!!”. Even though it was actually slow because the pug rarely runs zerker with good builds.

This happens a lot….. I’m in mumble with my friends saying how slow that run was, then the two pugs with us were typing about how we should do other dungeons because that run was super fast.

Cat Has Ducks.1982

I’d just prefer a support guardian unless I were running CoF or some easy mode dungeon.,

What does a support guardian mean? Like you want a full cleric healer or something? The main utilities that guardian bring, can be brought in Zerker gear. The only difference is the zerker will be bringing nice damage.

In Arah, the amount of things I block/blind for my teammates is absurdly high. I save my blocks solely to help them out, since dodges is enough to keep myself alive. Zerker gear(x/x/0/10/20) allows me to help the fight end faster, but doesn’t hinder my ability to block attacks, blind the enemy, cast stability when needed, and throw wall of reflection from all the ranged BS.

Funny note, yesterday I had a CoF Guardian running SE p1 with my group. He was using a staff at about a 10 body length distance from the final boss…. Me and my friends were dying with laughter at this. We were guessing he may have been healing the boss.

Cat Has Ducks.1982

What a Joke….

Thought I’d come back for the patch…

Nope. Not going to happen. We actually got a nerf due to PoV.

Whenever people make statements like this I am always wondering what part of the game they are talking about. For WvW, I can see this as being a big nerf to people who rely on it. But for PVE, the 10/30/0/10/20 type builds are still going strong. I’m glad I switched to that when I did. The DPS is so nice from that line, and it makes you skill change a lot more to fit particular situations. With purging flame removing 3 conditions on cast, you can do a fair amount of team condi removal in a stack without even traiting for team condi removal.

For PVE, guardians are in the same place in my eyes. For WvW, I only solo/small group roam and will be switching to a burst build(instant meditations and fury access should be interesting for WvW).

How to get Traveler Runes?

does anyone know how mystic forging runes work? As in probabilities of getting a major vs probability of getting a superior. Do all runes have an equal probability?

I wonder if you can make money gambling runes in the mystic forge — 7 gold per traveler is quite a lot (but then almost every other rune is worth nothing).

If you salvage rare items with master salvage kits, and just happen to have 4 major sigils, might as well go for it. But I wouldn’t pour a bunch of gold into it.

Karl had 4 1/2 seconds in the tooltip and I think he had +20% boon duration. I have +50% which would make it around 5 seconds at least. 5 seconds of fury every 18 seconds (from Smite Condition) alone is enough for me to land all my burst. Throw in the extra 5 seconds each from 2 other meditations, and that’s pretty huge.

For WvW 10/30/30 burst builds I can see this as being pretty pro. For dungeon play, it is quite underwhelming.

I primarily run dungeons. Arah P1-3 always the days I play(which are most). My friend who runs Arah with me, we use Lupicus as the great equalizer. It is in there we test if people are actually experienced in Arah. There is no way to hide inexperience in there, unless its only 1 pug, and we get him down so quick we don’t notice the nubulus in him.

Anyone that can melee phase 2 lupicus the whole time while not getting downed is above above average for sure.

Tl;DR. For arah dungeon only, Lupicus is my only test of skill level in that dungeon. Obviously if they fail the runs, then that supersedes Lupicus test, but you get me.

By gear with it in there and use black lion salvage kit on the gear, you get exotic mats and runes this way and the gear is normally atelast 1-2g cheaper than ordering the runes.

You will rarely save 10silver doing this and run the risk of not getting the rune.

Most peeps price the gear barely cheaper than the rune itself.

Black lion salvage kits guarantee you get the sigil fyi. But I just bought my set straight gold.(Got em when they were cheaper though)

This is actually a good hammer build. I wouldn’t recommend 25 in honor for that low endurance buff. With perma vigor, you won’t really be at low endurance much. I think the protection and vulnerability stacking will be more beneficial than getting a few extra percent from the boons in virutes or low endurance.

Only thing I’d change is VII Writ of Persistence in you honor master line. That is a ~20% dps boost since your symbols will last longer, therefor doing more damage. Duration > Size.

As far as your skills, its kind of hard to say which to use since they should change depending on what you are doing, so I will stick away from that. But aside from that one master trait change, you have a good build there IMO.(Its a hammer build I wouldn’t mind messing around with).

And also what is the difference in burst damage? Since most speed runs are focused around getting mobs close together and dropping fat damage in a couple of seconds. So I know people say Guards have more DPS, but whats the gap on the short end bursts?(or does GS #2 make Guard burst that great?).

For example how low can a Guard get the last boss on Arah P2, before your teammates join. The warrior rotation ending with eviscerate is pretty nice.

And about the previous comment on the “well rounded character” vs the “excelling at one thing” charcter, that is of course a matter of perception. Keep in mind that I do zero PvP and WvW. I play PvE exclusively for now. But I am not offended by any of the comments and I look forward to any and all further suggestions that take in to account all of the information I have just provided.

Guardians usefulness and purpose comes from what they can bring to a group.

Mainly: Aegis, Team stability, Wall of Reflection, and maybe team condi removal but that is like a secondary job.

I prefer to run Retreat, because it allows me to have 2 consecutive blocks which gives me the chance of keeping my guys off the floor, instead of having to pick them up.

Also running 15 into radiance, with major VI, gives you the ability to spam blinds while stacking with your team. All the blinds means you can blind/block a ton of hits. Coupled with focus #4, you can block a few more hits through blinding.

You need to think about what you will bring to the table for your team, and realize your primary job isn’t to help people up, but give support in keeping them up with our awesome damage mitigation skills(blocks/blinds). The cool thing with guards, is we can do all this while bringing some nice damage.

Traits I can’t be without:
Master of Consecration(Wall of Reflection)
Superior Aria (gets my retreat block quicker)
Blind exposure coupled with Renewed Justice (Spam the blinds!)

After that I decide what else I want to do.(which is usually damage for me after I get those skills slotted)

EDIT:
also remember to swap skills a lot. If you don’t need stability, put something like purging flames which will give a fire field and cure conditions for you and teammates. Stability is for certain situations, so know your dungeons and when to equip it.

AC13, CoF12, HotW1, SE13, Arah23, and TA up are all pretty safe.

Safe, not fast.

For anything speed you have to make a lot of stipulations and form your group for more than 2 minutes (hopefully people aren’t impatient).

Arah P2 with new pugs can hurt… Really bad. Unless you have like a thief or engineer to make the runs mindlessly easy with invis. I’m telling you, pugs panic with that deadeyes. I literally had to run at deadeyes so they wouldn’t target certain people. Arah P3, is the most pug friendly(of arah) I have noticed.

I played with this one dude in arah toady with 9k+ AP, and he was duel wielding swords as a warrior, lying on his back most the time.

Having said that…. Not many under 2k AP are efficient at arah(well most pugs aren’t efficient at arah)

It’s pretty much a lottery.

Arah pugs are bad across the board though, I join experienced only groups and they range Lupicus and can’t skip for &%*!

Not to say I’m some kind of god skipper, but for the skips that aren’t path 2 (count to 2 then dodge deadeye too hard for me) I get so bored normally that I wp back and skip everything again just so I can be doing something.

P1, Second skip lets me know what kind of player I got on my hands. P2 skips are easy if you are use to deadeyes. New arah players panic and don’t keep their cool with the big red circle on them.

P3 skips are just plain easy. I don’t even jump on that tree, never got the hang of it, never tried to lol. I just wait for the patrol to pass and waltz on by.

But, I try to keep arah pugging as low as possible. Or with as few as possible.

What if people kicked you, because they felt your gear wasn’t contributing anything…..

That’s the difference. I try my best to contribute with the build that I want to use. So I don’t provide as much dps as a full zerker… but I do provide long duration boons that will help you stay alive a lot longer.

It’s all subjective though. I don’t kick people from groups once the run has started for being terrible. Only if they start griefing or start running their mouth in chat.

My main reasons for kicking on join:
Ranger enters dungeon with bow drawn and bear following.
Under Level people on anything other than AC.
Guardian Holding Staff, I ask if they use staff while fighting. if(answer == “yes”)Kick else Hope it doesn’t hurt too much

Then of course I kick if I add constraints to the LFG that aren’t followed.

However, some people might find you worthless and kick you. But who is right? Is your awesome boons worth losing tons of dps? Or should they kick you, find more dps and lose those Boons? Who is right?

Not a big argument but complaining about DPS in a PUG not speed clearing is pointless IMHO. I remember once when I ran my shats mesmer through CoF1 in a pug. On last boss dps wasn’t going well. I simply logged out jumped on my warrior (half Zerk) and got it done. No forum post and I wasn’t upset about the DPS. As is the case with CoF 2 if at least 1 or 2 of you have strong DPS builds it takes 2 cycles with good timing on the shamans.

Many players have this tendency to point the finger and say, “Ohh they were horrible”. And while that may be the case if you have the time to complain about it you have the time to form a better party. getting crappy players when you invite everyone is a common occurrence not worth reporting imho.

Lets see here….

Title of Thread: “types of players you get”

I type about a type of player, with a little back story.

Then moral hall monitor enters thread and starts ranting for no reason.

Interesting…..

I never said I kittented on them. I don’t go around disrespecting people because they play terrible builds. I just pointed out a poor experience in this forum, not naming them. And for CoF, I really don’t feel like being picky. Just posted one of the worst experiences I have had.

And on the note about zerkers. I joined a group who gear checked for zerker. And my God was that horrible. Warriors not switching off GS, as well as not bringing Banner of Disc. It was ridiculous. There is no way to guarantee anything with pugs, only share the stories you encounter.

@Ethics. I shall add you. My main group uses mumble so if you do that it will make everything that much easier.

If you have enough DPS Lupi is easy. You don’t even need to know his tells except for the guy reflecting his AOEs. Just stack and DPS and reflect until dead.

If only I had more mesmer friends… Alas I usually go 2-4 of my heavy class friends with the open spots made up of pugs. Most of which aren’t comfortable melee’ing. I wish I lived in a perfect vacuum that most of your answers are spawned from…
