Thea reason why it’s 6k is because of 50% crit chance from unsuspecting foe and 25% damage from merciless hammer. Without those two, effectiver power is at 3k. That means you have a strong burst, if you can pull the combo off, but the rest of the fight is more Low damage.

Hi, I play shatter Mesmer/backstab thief and my Achilles heel seems to be bunker rangers.
No matter what i try i can’t break through their tankiness and hp, and they peck at me slowly with conditions untill I’m dead.
Is there a weakness to these kind of builds that i can expose?
Any advices?

As I fine tune my target build before spending all my gold to buy what’s needed I find myself wondering if 20k HP is too little for a roamer/skirmisher and PvE player? Should I ignore the actual HP and simply consider Effective HP (EH)?

Which is better the last 5 points into Arms for the extra +10% damage to bleeding foes or max out Discipline to break immobilise with movement skills and get a little more out of Rifle Burst?

To kill a Bunker Ranger you need HIGH Burst and HIGH Sustained. Otherwise you need Condis.

HGH Engi or Phantasm Mesmer is your only bet. If you think an Ele can kill a Bunker Ranger you have been fighting too many bad bunkers.

Exactly, unfortunately semantics do get in the way of pure verbal or written communication…Bunker Rangers can spike heal per second to 1,000 which combined with interrupts, resetting fights and dodge makes solo killing them a nightmare at best! These Rangers are BM’s and those pets hit hard!

  • WvW is not my main gametype and thus the build was for those purely interested in what I run.
  • I assume my enemy is the best player in the game and I build accordingly. This way I am not disadvantaged when I come up against a strong enemy.
  • I normally run with my friend who is a shatter or phantasm (or sometimes Hybrid) Mesmer.

The reason I rarely run GS is because of how it’s so ridiculously easy it is to completely dodge all of its damage. When playing a Symbol Roamer in tPvP you can use it on enemy res’s with Judges Intervention and you’ll force a lot of damage, this doesn’t work in WvW (to an extent).
In WvW I’ve never played against somebody who could dodge correctly and thus the GS would be super effective against them. Unfortunately, if I build myself towards this level of play, when I do play against a good player who can dodge correctly I’m going to lose badly. So the hammer will do more damage against good players while the GS will do more against less experienced players.

To answer your second question: the build is slightly outdated from the one I’m using now. I have Scepter/Focus as my second set and Judge’s Intervention.

OK that makes sense, thanks So if against solid players the proper way to use GS -and do tell me if it is effective at all- is to pull them first then use the spin attack? I assume you meant people dodging the spin was so easy?

I posted this previously in this thread. This is the % of damage you’ll do with WW against a good enemy if they use 0 utility skills.
So generally running with another player is the most effective way to get 100% of your WW damage, but with Hammer your Mighty Blow will hit majority of the time (and has 3/4s cast time not 1s).

I also referred to all skills on the GS. The leap, pull and WW are extremely easy to dodge. Also dodging while you pull will make it so you are not pulled to the foe which means they have 2 chances to dodge it.

Defensive —

Control Bunker —
Currently, the bunker meta Guardian is the Control Bunker. It’s a great combination of Support, Control and Bunker abilities. Your strengths revolve around controling your enemy off a point to capture it and giving large amounts of condition wipes to your allies. A very important part of your build is snaring enemies to set up spikes, it doesn’t look like much damage but it’s the difference between your ally doing 2k damage and 14k damage.
Mighty Blow actually puts out a lot of damage, don’t forget to cancel your skills to fake out dodges/stability!
Pros:

  • Large AoE condition removal
  • High Armour/Health/Heals
  • Loads of dodge rolls
  • Unrivaled Support
  • High Control
  • Great Bunker

Cons:

  • Weak to sustained DPS (45s+)
  • Can be bursted if you don’t pay attention
  • Low DPS but can hit high with MB

The reason I run Hammer mostly now is due to the control aspect and the ability to set up other players’ burst with it. It also gives you the option to quickly neutralize a point off almost any player and decent damage.

The ultimate test of a Guardian’s skill, you will be against another Guardian 1v1 many times on this map. Your main focus is the mid point, once you have the point you can swap with an ele and help out team fights. Getting a Banish off can (and often does) mean a win for your team, your job is to not get controlled off by the enemy Guard. If your enemy doesn’t run Hammer / Sword-Shield, you will eventually control them off the point.

All Bunker Guards will love this map, you are a god. With Sanctuary you can get an easy cap (also if your ally brings timewarp) when they’ve run out of AoE. The staff hits through things like sanctuary, soa, etc. You have so much survivability and control that you’re unlikely to die when you have an aura share ele supporting you. Your control can delay an orb for around 30seconds if done properly. This is the only map you can hard carry as a Bunker Guard.

Binding Bunker (Hm / Sc-Sh)http://tinyurl.com/dxmrj2c
This bunker build uses Binding Jeopardy to set up spikes with large amounts of vulnerability for easy kills. In co-ordinated teams this will give you quicker kills and in less co-ordinated teams it gives you more of a chance of landing a kill.

Makes use of the spirit shield to reduce incoming damage of enemy engineers/ranger/etc. I often run this if there are two or more engineers on the other team as it gives you a very strong team fight defence. Sometimes you can even bring Wall of Reflection too if you’re desperate.

Condition Engineer vs Power Engineer?

Go for the eyes might be fairly nice with that build since you’ll be critting often. Some of the other traits in firearms would work out well too. I’d consider dropping rifled barrels since you’ll be getting fairly close up with other rifle attacks and the flamethrower anyways.

Not sure how the flamethrower quite fits into this though, although the crit proccing on the flame jet would be nice, and you’d get decent damage out of the abilities. If I were to run a build like this though, I’d probably swap it out for toolkit, or perhaps another elixir.

Thanks, I play P/P but been trying to figure out a Rifle power build while saving up for the complete gear overhaul so I don’t actually have play experience with this build. The only Rifle build I have played was in sPvP and it was a full out power bunker with about 0 crit and HGH which has ok DPS and can burst a little bit if played well but it actually is much better and just using elixirs on team and soaking up damage.

How ton counter confusion engies?

They pull, you dodge and run. They swing in the air and have the cooldown.

That won’t work unless they’re very slow. You won’t be able to recover from the pull before the prybar hits you. A stun break will get you out of it, but I’m not sure it’s worth a stun break just to avoid prybar.

Magnet can be a bit hard to see, especially in group combat, but an engineer will do prybar immediately after magnet 85% of the time. So if you’re fighting one, it’s a good idea and try to spot the magnet. It has a 1.5 second channel time before it pulls, so you’ll have to time your dodge, just like if you’re dodging killshot from warrior rifle. Often, the engineer will instinctively use prybar even though you dodge the magnet, meaning they’ll just use it on nothing.

For the concussion bombs, just try to stay out of the bombs. They might try using the concussion one once they’ve snared you with something since that will help guarantee it hits.

For the pistols, it’s not uncommon for an engineer to open a fight with static shot, and to use it whenever it’s available. It can be a bit hard to deal with simply due to how fast it is, so it might rely on you making good reads in order to deal with it. If you’re in melee range, you can always try to continually run behind the engg to screw up with ranged attacks. Projectile reflection can help if it’s available to you, although they might try to magnet you out of that, and it won’t work for bombs.

And make sure you keep an eye on your conditions. If you have 10 stacks of confusion, you might have to play defensive until they go away.

You obviously haven’t the slightest clue of what you’re talking about.

It is not hard to create a d/d ele build that has a hard hitting burst while maintaining the sustain and tankiness of a classic bunker. After that, it all boils down to your individual skill, which seems to be lacking if you’re going to just sit there and say, “Nope, the ranger bunker is too difficult. Better just RTL away.”

This is another classic case of L2P.

You insist on maintaing your delusion that Rangers are ‘free kills’ and this is how attempt to qualify it: “This is another classic case of L2P.”

Creating a d/d ele that enjoys a balance of damage and mitigation was never mentioned in what I said, you actually quoted me yet did not bother to read it!

One more time and this time I hope your disillusion will be cured:

Against a bunker Ranger or any bunker for that matter even a meta Guardian the HARD counter is a full burst build. Since this thread is about Ranger the ONLY ele build that has a chance is a full zerker build….

You do not beat a true bunker with DPS it an illusion son, you do it with burst up to about 14k or greater in a single rotation AND only if the Ranger takes it….

This clip has some ele fights and while its not perfect and you can poke holes in it (they never even bothered with the spirit they must be ….) its a good show:

Hard counter would be burst Guardian (more than you’re full HP per burst rotation if she pulls it off), and a stalemate would be regeneration ranger (cleric gear).

The zerker ele killed you because thats how you counter bunkers, you need to spec burst and blow them up..thats also how you counter phantasm member…

A power regeneration ranger (about +2k power and toughness) would be in a mix of cleric and soldier and most likely also uses healing spirit as elite with healing signet equipped and healing runes -regeneration. They can play double bow or a mix of weapons…

So, the thing is no single profession in the game today can pump out enough DPS to kill them, my advice is get help and somehow keep poison and chill up all the time..Good luck!

Dusted off my thief (P/D from 1 to 80) and tried P/P, D/P and S/P and I can not ignore the massive drop in survivability with P/P….P/P in full DPS gear and spec with quickness Unload burst is sick, but as soon as I go up against some one who saves evades/dodge/interrupts for Unload its over :/

Pistol shot damage is very low. Pathetically low.

Tell me this when I kill you in sPvP real fast. In 1v1, P/P is the best.
With Haste and Unload, it can do a lot of damage in a few seconds. Takes from you more than half of the health.
I play right now with one, and I am at 47. I can kill Veterans easy solo. You just have to know how to play.
U will be in tight spots, but I consider this a hard mode in GW2 and I’m having a blast playing with this kind of character.

Could you share more? How do you gear and talent as well as how do you like to open and maybe share utilities?

I don’t know how many other people feel this way. Hotjoin is the fastest way to accumulate rank and glory points even compared to tPvP not to mention that points acquired from tournaments somehow inexplicably don’t count towards the PvP Conqueror title. And for hotjoins I get the maximum points using my phantasm mesmer which can easily beat any 1v1 player who comes up against me.

The problem is I feel guilty when I beat guardians, warriors, eles, necros etc with so much ease. I feel that these guys are playing skillfully, sometimes lasting a surprisingly long time and me…I just run around spawning phantasms, stealthing, blocking, and being invulnerable. I ocassionaly feel they deserved to win due to their level of play but were simply hamstrung by the fact that they were up against a phantasm mesmer.

Sometimes I fight engineers who really put up a fight. They blind, regenerate health quickly and it’s obvious they’re doing a lot to stay alive but eventually they fall, unable to keep up with my damage output. I get a lot of points in hotjoin this way usually being the top player if everything goes well.

Isnt’ this kind of…cheap? I can even decimate so called “1v1 stars” like thieves in seconds. 10 seconds is a long fight with a thief and they’re usually on the ground or have run by the end of that.

I’m going to do whatever it takes to get max rank points so I doubt if I’ll change from a phantasm mes, but…does anyone else feel the way I do?

Its an awesome complement in condition or power build, its a great way to keep chill, poison and weakness up as needed and its THE only weapon that allows for FEAR!

  1. allows for the rolling of regeneration, I have Focus as the other weapon so Regeneration is pretty much always up!

Thief goes stealth..NP this weapon WILL hit him!

Did I mention its Area attacks except auto attack??

Looks, its look freaking AWESOME and if you get the fire skin or a number of other skins its all about da looks mon!

I can’t say much about not having greater marks. For my norm set of power I run D/WH and Axe/Focus . However, for condition set, not having Greater marks is a sin as lots of things block in this game (Aegis from Mesmer and guardian, Block skill from guard, War, Mesmer, Ranger plus the range it covers) But, your focus as axe is mostly single target, so just be careful on placement and understand that they could block, but its not too much a DPS loss unless its Staff 4 (which is your Condition removal, but also the highest hitting mark on staff) .

Wow those stats look amazing, I don’t do any PvE dungeon runs though :/

I just tried playing with staff in off hand without greater marks and its pure fail, staff is completely WORTHLESS without greater marks, why is this even a trait it should be default??

I’ve never played with dagger as I don’t like melee but I guess I can give it a try…As it is my AE was Staff and was considering removing Spectral abilities and adding wells for morse and mitigation.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated…1% life-force is indeed lacklustre, in WvW I might just use the 50% less fall damage or the DS one like you said.

My bet is that Axe+Focus & DS put together has enough oomph….I maxed out effective power as much as possible with that in mind though not sure about not having larger marks?

Calculators like that are rather easy to manipulate and don’t always reflect the results you might want, unfortunately.

Are you saying that figure is wrong?

Even with all the pre requests do we not have something here?
