Is Necromancer the strongest ?

Maybe these guys who are just flinging bleeds don’t get it, but my necro is speced with some healing in mind and I can confirm that they are awesome when it comes to AOE damage and group healing at the same time.

Are Necros as bad off as the forums suggest?

They’re awesome. For some reason, in this forum, people can’t think outside condition and power builds for some reason and automatically think it sucks. Mean while, my PvE and WvW build focuses more on healing and critical strikes and for the most part, its awesome. In terms of 1v1, warriors and thieves can carve me up like turkey, guardians can walk away whenever they feel like it, but everyone else I can take if I play my cards right. For warriors and guardians, my lack of power makes sense. For thieves, I just don’t have a lot on the build to counter stealth. The only other time I die is during tower/castle mosh pits where I can’t tell whats going on anyways. It also translates well into PvE with high healing with tons of life saving skills.

I call it Sky Diving.
I jumped from the top of mount maelstrom and landed inside the volcano without taking a single point of damage or even being put in combat from the fall. XD

(after a couple tries)

If your timing is perfect, you can ‘reset’ the fall damage close enough to the ground to not actually take damage at all.

I’ve used it in the Obsidian sanctum before, too. Jumped down a ‘nearly lethal’ fall while being chased by three guys who were guarding the entrance. Used Spectral Walk/Return, landed at full health while the three of them landed at ~%10.
Heh, they did not survive…

Sounds awesome :o got to remember that next time.

Honestly, since the skill is (now) pretty useless in combat, it’s wonderful that it has so many uses outside.

I don’t have much knowledge about sPvP, but in WvW, it can be awesome in the right terrain. Do it in an outer corner in a keep or the ruins and you can really loose people.

I guess this is what the devs meant so long ago when they said that the necro is probably the hardest class to master.

I was thinking of strategies on how to use spectral walk well when out of pure curiosity, I wondered what would happen if I fell a fatal fall. To my surprise, you can in fact use spectral walk mid fall and teleport to said point and land with minimal damage and no knock down.

I was just wondering if this was intentional or if this is something to report.

I’m not really good at finding good spots for screenshots nor am I good at timing a good animation shot, lol. Well anyways, here is my Sylvari Guardian. Hopefully you guys like the armor, I had a hard time choosing it. I wanted him to look cultural, while still having a heavy armor look.

I think maybe using a cultural armor chest piece or the one from Twilight Arbor might give a bit more balance between the whole plants to metal look. Still, what you chose is awesome.

Being a Necromancer, I tried going for something along the lines of a more sinister alternative to the male mesmer’s armor set shown during character creation.
Anyone have ideas on dyes that could improve it?

I’m not giving you weird looks. I’m a girl and I think my female Sylvari is the sexiest PC I have.

Caithe and Trahearne are also pretty sexy. I think that the Sylvari are pretty kitten hot.

Orange trees are the most abused plants in the world.
Given hormones to increase the size of their fruits, their branches develop weak, making it hard to hold on to their children before they are fully ripe.
Their fruits are then plucked and crammed in crates with little room to move, and are shipped all the way from South America to the rest of the world.

What profession for Sylvari?

in Sylvari

Posted by: Coffietire.2783

Coffietire.2783

I’d say the profession that is the most “normal” for the Sylvari would be the ranger (mine is a necromancer).
Not only for the nature focused class, but also because you can have a fern houd as a pet, a dog creature that is also born from the pale tree so it makes more sense rather than a random bear that popped out of nowhere.

In my opinion, judging balance over a Xv1 scenario completely undermines the concept of team based pvp. Next time, just try to find where your team mates are and follow one of them or ask them to follow you.
Also, try and put some distance between your remaining opponent and the downed one. It won’t hurt to dodge away from where the point your trying to capture/defend in order to get some space.

Necro or Ranger?

Coffietire.2783

If you’re able to put up with some game related faults such as pet AI, necromancers can be very fun. The thing is though, is that it’s a complex class and it’s hard to find a build with it that will suit every situation that you need.
Also understand that solo pvping is going to be really tough, so if you do play the necromancer, try to latch on to someone.

Did I do something wrong or was the priority lying to me?

in Personal Story

Posted by: Coffietire.2783

Coffietire.2783

I’m currently doing the Sylvari story and around the early 20s mark, I was given a decision to battle the risen over at Over Lake Haven using ether an army or golems.
I chose golems and headed over to the place to do battle. After a conversation with the priority, my first instinct was to head over and bust undead kitty. Yet I saw no golems and was struggling quite a bit with battling the risen, downing a lot but succeeded with beating the quest being defeated only once.
I assumed that the golems failed, but then my priority buddies started praising how well the golems worked. I was about to smack them across the face before noticing some glowing blue thing next to them and thought “Oh, maybe I was supposed to do something here first.”
Ether way, my character is now a badkitty with just a touch of madness, needing minimal help in an epic struggle against zombies while forgetting that those priority kittens were supposed to give me back up.
So was this a bug, incompetence on my part, or a mix of both?

Suggest an existing weapon to be played by other professions

While I think that the weapon restrictions are well balanced as it is, a bit more variety and some experimentation with new styles with existing tools would be awesome. So what I am asking you guys is to name a few weapons you would like to see be used with other professions. Bonus points if you mention some potential skill ideas and why that weapon and profession combination appeals to you.
If this is a repeat thread, feel free to contact the mods to delete this and/or redirect me to another thread where I can post my own ideas.

-Torch wielded by necromancers
Fire is intimidating and one of the hyped aspects of the necromancer pre-launch was their multiple skills to use fear. I think a skill that burns and fears enemies at the same time would be hilarious.

-Longbow wielded by guardians
One nasty complaint about guardians is their lack of a low cooldown fast ranged attack, and I think the longbow would be a perfect fix. The longbow has a valiant aura about it.

-Focus wielded by rangers
Being a nature focused profession, it would be cool for the ranger to have a magical tool they can use to perhaps commune to nature further and with their pet through direct supportive buffs to them or maybe a skill that has their pet instantly teleport to them.

-Hammer wielded by engineers
One weird idea I had for a steam punk themed weapon was a rocket propelled maul. While I doubt Arena would ever implement it in the game, allowing the engineer to equip it would be close enough.

whip (two-handed, the Nightmare Court has them so why can’t we?)

-halberds (two-handed)

Using Death Shroud Properly?

Coffietire.2783

Thanks a lot for your replies guys.
I completely forgot that DS get weaker when your life force is low and I had no idea that you could use doom while stunned.
It’s also good to hear that some people are giving the blood magic trait line as well as life transfer some love, those were some of the aspects that really attracted me to the class that seemed to be bashed quite a few times in this forum.

Using Death Shroud Properly?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Coffietire.2783

Coffietire.2783

So it seems everyone is up in a tissy about the Necromancer being under powered. In response, one of the most common defenses is that people are saying that Death Shroud is not being used to its fullest potential.
Now I’m not quick to write off the Necromancer’s current state myself. I admit that I’m still fairly a newb and never did structured PvP in any of the betas. I’m a bit slow on reacting to animations and I end up forgetting to dodge a lot, but even I managed to get some kills in sPvP. Still, one thing is for sure is that I sometimes forget to use Death Shroud, and when I do, it doesn’t save me a lot of the time. Being the main mechanic and what not, I assume this is a skill that is supposed to be used a lot.

So far, all I know is that it can be a helper when surrounded, and is good for a last resort when you’re about to die.
So my question to anyone who managed to stick with Necromancers and end up being good with them, what are some situations that you have been in where Death Shroud has been frequently useful, Death Shroud build or not?

I say stop worrying about the lore. When they revealed the engineer, one of the things on the engineer FAQ page was expressing the odd idea of a Sylvari engineer.
Arena replied by saying that your character is meant to be a hero that stands out from the rest, and that the odd mix of class and race can be one of those things that helps them stand out more. Just like how their are Asura warriors and Charr mesmers, a Norn can be a guardian easily. In fact, I think that a guardian makes a lot of sense to a Norn.

My most beloved Nekro was a Dissapointment. Why?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Coffietire.2783

Coffietire.2783

Maybe it’s because my only other experience with a necromancer class was in Diablo 2, but I think the necromancer in this game is cool. I love using my scepter and focus combo to slow the enemy down as much as possible while dishing out damage. Then when they finally get close, I whip out my dagger and horn combo, daze them, kite them for awhile, summon my locust for extra damage, and when I’m getting too much hit, I ether switch back to my scepter, slow them down, and heal, or if they’re close to death as well, I activate my death shroud and finish them off.

If that doesn’t scream brutal and sick magic type, I don’t know what does. Though I will admit, pets are pretty weak, I think their defense should ether reflect your toughness or just get buffed.

Underwater combat with a Necro.

With PvE, I barely get problems, you best bet is to make most of your utility skills a signet. It dissapoints me that wells don’t work underwater, considering I know how they could make it work. Just make it a sphere around the location and just make ground targeting for it disabled.

In PvP, I avoid water unless I can get a teammate to come with me, that is were the potential for the underwater Necromancer really shines. Sinking tomb while another character busts the person up can be devastating.

Dagger damage?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Coffietire.2783

Coffietire.2783

Dagger can be good if you’re good with switching weapons. I like opening with my scepter and focus on one set to slow enemies down and do as much damage as possible before switching to a dagger and horn combo where I open up with a daze attack, summon my locus, and kite the hell out of enemies.

When I’m low on health, I switch back to scepter and focus combo, roll out of the way, slow them down with a cripple and a chill, heal, and start dealing bleeding damage again.

The dagger isn’t good if you’re going to use it alone, you’ll have to make use of all your other weapons too, but it can be very rewarding since it’s main attack generates life force.
