Why the Ranger hate.

As someone who loves the underdog class I came to start playing the ranger about 18 months ago… And I was that guy that used lb in spvp before read the wind or the lb changes and I loved it. I was perfectly content with being overlooked and underestimated while I hit for 3-5k auto attacks from a mile away and then swooping in with my friendly gs and finishing em off with a good ol maul….

Ranger has changed a lot since those days and I’ve recently come back to the game after a short break. I’m glad the class got some attention it finally deserves, but they’re way too predictable. Everyone runs the same build and tries to spike ppl with rabid fire. I use focus on my ele and shield on my war (with reflect trait) just for giggles to watch it backfire in their face.

On the other hand watching a skillful ranger play is a beautiful thing. One of the best Rangers I know( shoutout to link from fabl) i sow that guy win a 1v5 in north camp in wvw against the other server. It was just beautiful to watch. No longbows or rapid fire was used.

I would much rather have the ability to use an extra utility skill instead of the current elites. I currently use the human racial skills instead of the ele ones. I wouldn’t mind seeing a change or addition. I was really never a fan of the ele elites even before the bug fixes and needs. Adding or changing something would be much appreciated.

I’ve read that at Pax at the end of the month the 2 dervs ( Colin and I forgot the other ones name) are supposed to make a huge announcement… I’m remaining hopeful that it will bring some juice to the table to the entire game (especially eles)

So in the past month or so i have been editing some of my screenshots, and it kind of turned into a thing of mine, where friends started asking me to photoshop their pics as kind of a profile picture for TS and whatnot. Im not exactly sure why i do it either. All of the photos I do are minor editing (mainly with lighting , blurring, sharpening) so that it still looks genuine.

This isnt a request thread for people to request one done, but if you want me to I AM WILLING to do it.

why do you play a ranger?

Because I made a mistake at character creation and rolled with it.

Lol

I play one due to the versatility they bring to the table. I enjoy a lot of their skill sets and some of the animations are my favorite in the game. Rangers get a lot of hate and are one of the most overlooked/underestimated prof in the game. I hear ppl go "ranger, free loot bag " on a daily basis… I just enjoy throwing it in their face for under estimating me and prove them wrong

I have 2 rangers atm and ranger is my pvp main. Mine are human and asura. Its a shame they have that req for asura as they have some of the best ( wackiest ) animations ( looking at you sword/dagger/gs). As with any armor class human tends to have some of the best looking armor but the problem is that everyone in their right mind plays a human ( so wont stand out much). I would recommend norn actually. It fits from a lore perspective… And they have some nice looking cultural armor as well. As a norn you can chose some body art/ tatts to spice up the look too.

There seems to be a glitch in the neck area for T3 Norn armor on males. The issue was noticeable when wearing T3 without a helmet. It became even more noticeable now that i have the Juggernaut as the juggernaut thinks the neck area is part of the armor too.

Berserker has the highest damage output, higher than assassin’s actually.
There is a very helpful table that you can look at that will compare different armor sets. It compares effective power and effective health of all armor. This table does not address condition damage put rather actual damage.

Its true assassins may be useful in certain builds more so than Berserkers but without comparing builds the but the stats themselves Berserkers comes out on top

Lore seems to be the main thing that you find lacking in GW2. The world of Tyria is actually very heavy in lore. One of the most lore heavy games I have played. Most of that lore comes from GW1 and not GW2 sadly. The way lore is presented in gw2 for some reason makes it seem utterly dull and shallow, when in fact there’s so much to it and so much potential. If you want to find out more scan through the lore forum section or go on the gw1/gw2 wiki and look up lore around it (or go play gw1).

There have been books written (3 books actually) that are supposed to link the 250 year gap between the original GW and this one. I found them quite enjoyable actually some more than others but were decent reads. The game itself is not based on a novel like some of the mmos out there are but the books themselves were written AFTER the universe was set in place.

Warrior Hammer builds

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

Hammer on the war is a fun weapon. Most of my experience with the hammer comes with being part of a hammer train in a guild. It’s pretty exciting running in and hitting a giant group of people with Earthshaker( if you leave screen shake effect on its much more epic).

Hammer isn’t usually used in dungeons because it’s a control weapon and not a DPS weapon. Sure you can hit big numbers with it but the basis is to control what the enemy does. The reason this is a problem in dungeons is because the champions arnt really affected by control /cc due to defiance/unshakable. Most warriors tend to opt for a GS or Axe due to the insane DPS that they can provide.

I’m not saying you can’t run hammer in dungeons but because of the unshakable status you won’t be nowhere near as effective as you would with pretty much any other weapon.

You CAN use it to roam but it’s not the most optimal weapon for that either. Most roamers tend to opt for something with a bit more mobility. Since you WANT TO use hammer to roam as a secondary set I recommend something with a bit more mobility. Consider using Sword/Axe (higher DPS) or Sword/Warhorn (more Mobility)
I would opt for PVT armor with Berserker Trinkets with possibly rune of the Traveler ( for the mobility) if you end up using Warrior Sprint you can opt for a better rune. It really depends on what traits you end up using as to what rune/sigils you want to use.

Having a blast in SPVP

GS/Axe-Axe

2-0-6-6-0 (WS/OHT/EB or BS – SoTF/NP/EP)

LR/QZ/SoTW –
Elite: Either Entagle or RaO depending on mood.

Dolyak Runes –
Celestial Amulet
Sigils of Energy/Water

Had 3 on me for 2 mins one match (one a ranger who I stomped twice alone 1v3 after the second down he didn’t come back) defending point and they all kittened I was near invulnerable. Ranger asked for build following match.

I swap EB and BS dependent on other team make-up…heavy conditions I use EB..mostly power based I swap to Bark Skin..

Use Wolf/Brown bear for defensive reasons (Fear/SiO)

I tried this out last night and I had a good time with it as well. A different take on a bunker build I guess. I was curious as I don’t think I’ve ever used offhand axe in sPVP so it was a nice refresher. Whirling defense ended up being my strongest skill lol.

The build has some insane regen potential. I wasn’t sure what Heal skill you used so I used TU. I made a slight adjustment to it and added Oakheart Salve instead of Offhand Training. I was regenerating about 1200 HP/Second: D.

CountzuCrytus.7256

Thanks for the feedback!

I see your point on Pyromancer’s Puissance, now that I think about it. I stay in Fire Attunement far less in WvW. What would be better? Looks to me like Blinding Ashes, Persisting Flames, or Burning Fire could be useful.

I have tried Blasting Staff, and I know everyone says it’s mandatory, but I did not find it that useful. It doesn’t affect Meteor Shower, and everything else with the speed of moving zergs and AOE target cap I find that with good placement I hit the max number right away or not at all. I’d much rather be able to cast Arcane Wave more often.

Aeromancer’s Alacrity I don’t see the benefit of – really the only staff Air skill that it helps is Static Field, as it doesn’t affect the 1 skill, I already have permaswiftness, and the other two skills are basically useless. I don’t often find my static is on cooldown at a time when I rotate back to it and it would be useful to throw one down.

Aquamancer’s Alacrity looks useful, but requires 4 points. I feel like the tradeoff loss of power and quicker cooldown on Meteor Shower if I take points from fire is not worth it.

I should mention that I am on a T1 server mostly playing NA prime, so I’m typically in a group of 50-ish fighting groups of similar or greater size.

I had stacking weapons before the patch, and got rid of them before finding out that there was still a way to utilize them. But since one of ANet’s goals with the sigil rework was specifically to stop the practice of using stacking weapons, I would bet on them nerfing the water weapon workaround sooner rather than later, so I’ve been hesitant to build around that.

Blasting staff DOES affect Meteor Shower.
Wiki: “The damage radius for the meteors in Meteor Shower are increased rather than the radius of the spell.”
30 in fire is a complete waste and you shouldn’t need to stack might yourself as your group should be stacking might during initiation anyways (most of the time im @ 25 stacks before we do the initial push ).

I usually run 0/0/6/6/1 or 0/0/1/6/6 as a staff ele in a group. My damage comes from my gear not the traits themselves as the traits are more meant for supporting the group.

in Warrior

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

When you say condition ranger I’m going to assume you meant condition warrior, since this is the warrior forum section (and rangers can’t use sword/sword)
Sword provides bleed stacks on auto attacks and the Burst skill provides 8 stacks of bleed along with Immobilize. The offhand provides more bleeds and torment. You can stack insane amounts of bleed in a short time and keep it pretty high. Usually most condi wars combine s/s with a longbow for the added burning pressure.

CountzuCrytus.7256

A guardian is usually a frontline class; they tend to be in the middle of the action while most support oriented Elementalists are in the back casting spells far away (not saying you can’t be ranged with Guardian or melee with ele).

Guardian tends to support allies with boons (buffs). Most of the boons they provide are defense oriented. They also have the ability to give Aegis (It’s a boon that blocks the next attack that would normally hit you) to the entire party. Also they tend to be very effective at removing conditions (Blind, Burning, Bleed etc etc). Guardian is a very good class to start off as they tend to be easier to pick up and the learning curve isn’t as steep as it is on an Ele.

Elementalist tend not to be beginner friendly. They are one of the squishiest classes (lowest base health and lowest base armor in game) in the game. But if you play one they are insanely fun. An elementalist is kind of a mix of everything. They can support fairly well while providing good DPS at the same time. Elementalists can conjure weapons for your allies to use which tend to have cool effects (one of them being ice bow which has one of the highest damage skills in game). Along with conjures they can provide combo fields which give allies effects that stand in them. You can combine the field with a “Finisher” for added effects. Instead of providing boons directly as a guardian does they tend to support them by controlling what the enemy does and what effects the party gets from these boons. They are also the closest thing in here to your traditional healer in an mmo. If you use staff and water attunement you can provide some decent heals to the party that way.

I’m not all that great at dodging so…..

….you will die a LOT in higher level content.

LEARN 2 DODGE. (and move and block and blind and use Virtues (Ageis) and generally NOT get hit).

(max power etc. for quicker running).

Whut? Power has nothing to do with your run speed so this is kind of confusing.

To OP: What Grim said is correct, It doesn’t matter how good your build is or how great your gear is, if you don’t know how to dodge correctly and effectively it won’t do you much good. Stacking Blinds may reduce the need to dodge a bit, but I see you putting up about 3-4 blinds to a grp of mobs (3-4 Hits) every so often… its impossible to put out so many blinds to actually negate the need to dodge when fighting multiple mobs. The only one that really can do that is thief with black powder and just have the 5 mobs standing in it.
To Grim:
When he said quicker runs I think he meant in the context that he kills things quicker (kind of like a speed run in a dungeon) but for a set group of mobs…

There is no mana in the game. Every class can range in this game, some being more viable than others. There is no single class that can dish out crazy dps while being tanky at the same time, you pick one or the other. As far as ranged dps usually it’s not as high as melee. Top ranged dps classes are Elementalist, Mesmer, Ranger and Necro(not in any particular order). All of the classes can melee as well l, it really depends on what weapons you are using as they determine the skills you get.

1.) Blind makes your attack miss, it doesn’t matter if it hits 1 guy or all 5 it will miss.
2.) Blind has a duration (usually it’s fairly short). As long as the enemy has blind on them during the attack itself they will miss, the channel time doesn’t matter.
3.) I barely do PVE so I will leave this to someone else.

Ranger Greatsword is one of my favorite weapons in game; it’s a complex weapon to use in a sense where it provides more than just 5 random skills placed together with the intention of killing the enemy as soon as possible. It provides so much (Burst, Leap, Evade (on auto attack!), block, long range, knockback, stun, daze) all on one weapon.
To use it successfully it makes you think how to use it. Do I use my block to block the ranged attacks or to knock the enemy out of position with a kick(get in melee range) or do I save it for the enemy as they try to run away to hit them with a ranged attack (that’s all the same skill #4). It’s not a perfect weapon in any means and it doesn’t compare in DPS as say a warrior GS with 100 Blades, but it’s the last guy standing that wins the fight not the guy that hits the hardest.
GS Rant aside…

Melee ranger CAN be viable there are some great builds out there. Longbow/SB shouldn’t be neglected either.

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

The players above post a lot of valid points. Truth is rangers are probably the most hated on profession in the game, and may even find it hard to find parties in dungeons. Most of the hate is overhyped in my opinion and I feel as though people jump on the hate wagon just because it’s the cool thing to do, without any personal experience or basis. They just heard someone hate on rangers and decided to form their opinions off of that. Rangers have received some quality of life improvements in this last patch, its not “Perfect” but the overall class is a bit better than it was before the patch. I mainly play ranger in sPVP and don’t have much experience elsewhere with them.

I tried a couple of dungeons but didn’t find them as enjoyable as I did on my Ele or guardian. I don’t blame the class for this but rather the stacking meta that people have when going into dungeons, which I don’t think A-Net really intended. I’ve also tried WvW a bit with the ranger but with your pet being a part of your damage and it dying really quickly in a large zerg fight it kind of handicaps you. Roaming they do well as managing your pet is a much easier and the fight is much more under your control.

My experience in sPVP isn’t usually about bursting an enemy down as you would with a thief or an ele, but it was more of being able to provide constant pressure to where the enemy couldn’t out-sustain it. I’ve tried the meta spirit ranger and bunker trapper builds but I didn’t find them as enjoyable as a roamer/debunker. That being said its not impossible for you to hit for big numbers, I see 8-9K Maul hits and 5k Tail Swipe (drake attack) fairly commonly as a power ranger, but its not really what the class was meant for.

Rangers are very good duelists, they excel in 1v1 fights, and they have some of the coolest weapon sets in game as far as skills/animations/abilities go imo.

If you like being the under-dog and receiving the hate only to shove it back in their face after you stomp them, then yes ranger is for you

This doesnt apply to GW2 as in sPVP everyone’s gear is the same (max stats) and everyone is the max level. (hence why its called Structured PVP)

I tend to swap between characters myself, what I found helps me is to have a character designated for a certain type of game mode. I tend to find it tedious to have to swap builds for every mode and to have to carry 8 different sets of gear (exaggeration) in my bags. So what I have is a “Main” for every type of game mode. I still occasionally play my other 7 characters in all game modes but nowhere as much as my “Main”
So what I have is:

  • Guardian for PVE (unless I’m in AC then I use Ele)
  • Warrior/Ele for WvW. I tend to swap back and forth depending on what the guild needs that evening
  • Ranger for sPVP. I tend to play Ele and War in spvp a lot too but its somewhere like 60% Ranger 30% Ele and 10% war.

Hope that helps.

Well it does matter; the base armor on a light class (Ele, Necro, Mesmer) is 1804 while the base armor on a heavy class (Warrior, Guardian) is 2083. It’s not a HUGE difference but it is noticeable. The light classes usually can’t just stand there and trade hits which is why they are much more mobile than a giant tin can (I mean a guardian).
The combat is much more dynamic in spvp than just standing there and hoping to outlast the guy in front of you. If that is how you are trying to go about this that may be the problem as you are not utilizing your blocks/dodges/boons.

Edit:
As far as Mesmers go, once you get some experience with fighting them, usually it will be fairly obvious to which ones are the real ones and which ones are the illusions/clones.

I disagree about Berserker gear. Zerg is no place for a glass cannon ele. You need to stay alive to do your job, which is to cast healing during fights.

The main thing is to stay alive, which is why I recommend starting in PVT but if a player can survive in Berserker gear why not? You provide the same support via water fields/static/ Earth but your meteor shower provides an extra punch.

Berserker gear is where you want to be, but it doesn’t mean you should. For people new to Ele in WvW I recommend starting in PVT and slowly as you get used to it start swapping out pieces for Berserker. If you can stay alive in a zerg fight in full berserker gear right away, all the power to you go right ahead.

For builds I recommend doing something like 0/0/2/6/6/ to start off, once you get used to it and are able to survive you can go for something like 0/0/6/6/2.
Staff is a must

Side note: As im no longer part of a WvW guild (PvX now) i haven’t had the chance to play my ele much in WvW since the new patch. That being said, I’m not sure if the meta has changed for that since the new traits came out, but i don’t see it being that different

Woth only one point in water you getting health each second when attuned to water. Put down your waterfields amd soon your at full heaalth again. Conditions oh no. Oh wait, having a heal skill that removes up to 8 conditions only 15s cd. Summon elementals to protect you even more, or arcane skills for more damage.

This is my tribute to elementalist.

The four elememts is not tools, they are living creatures in your soul.

I agree with you, we have so much utility/ability/potential it’s not even funny.

This is my take on the Fresh Air Ele Burst that S/D is known for. Insane burst damage, lots of fun to play. Viable? Depends on the player

Extremely squishy, but if you play it like a thief where you go in burst someone down and then back out you should do fine.
Combo is :
Rock Barrier>Hurl> Earthquake> Lightning Flash mid Earthquake >Arcane Wave>Arcane Blast>Air Attunement>Lightning Strike> Ride the Lightning> Updraft.

If done right should take you 1-2 seconds to complete combo tops.
I found a good youtube vid of someone doing it , seeing it should help http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdBJw9cBuEo

How do you get started with endgame gearing?

Now that you are 80 you probably have a bunch of Karma saved up, maybe enough for a 1-2 pieces of armor. Visit any of the temples in Orr and you can purchase a piece of lvl 80 exotic armor for about 42,000 Karma each.

Go to http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Temple_armor to check which temple sells which armor. The armor skin is the same for all temples but stats/rune may vary
After that you can do a couple of different things:

  • Craft
  • Buy from Trading post
  • Complete dungeons for tokens to trade in for armor ( check the wiki I posted above and search what dungeon provides which stats, as they are not all the same stats!)
  • Collect badges of honor in WvW by completing objectives/ killing people. Trade them in for armor.
  • Complete a sPVP dungeon reward track ( 1 piece of armor per track)-Takes a while to complete.

Most people right now run exotic gear. This is not the highest tier as there are ascended items. Ascended items tend to take a lot of money/time to craft and only provide a limited number boost in stats compared to exotics (about 5% boost overall from what I’ve seen). As it may take hundreds of gold to make a set most people tend not to bother with it. Once you have a full set of exotic that should be enough to get you through just about everything in the game and later on , when you feel you are ready you can go and make Ascended/ Legendary items.

toughness or vitality end game

Toughness
Toughness is almost always better than Vitality. Simple reason is it scales with Healing Power better than Vitality does.

With vitality sure you can take bigger hits, and more of them than if you had high toughness/low hp. But that’s just it, everything will be hitting hard.

The reason toughness is better is because it mitigates damage, so something that would be a big hit on a vitality build may not be anything to worry about in a toughness build. Having low max HP isn’t always a bad thing, it MAY work in your favor actually as its easier to bring yourself back to full health without much of an effort. Where if you are running vitality and have near 30K HP, it will take a LOT and I mean a LOT of healing/healing power to get you back up to a healthy amount.

To sum everything up
Vitality

  • Bigger Pool – Can take more hits
  • Everything Hurts
  • Harder to Heal and Keep Alive once you start taking damage

Toughness

  • Lower Pool- Cant take as much damage
  • Things don’t hit nowhere near as much
  • Easier to keep alive due to not needing as many heals to heal back up.

This applies to all game modes, PVE, sPVP and WvW (especially WvW)

Tab- Target tends to work if you are just trying to select a random person in a blob and you can quick tab through people if looking for a commander as well instead of trying to find one by clicking.
In that case it could have possibly been terrain getting in the way? Do you have that problem in open field fights too or only when it comes to walls and such?
I tend not to actually even select targets when fighting but I usually am using a weapon that can cleave or something that I can put down lots of AOE

What Pet do you use for what build?

Hey,
I wanted to get people’s opinions about their go to pet. I know most people have a favorite few pets they tend to use for a few of the builds they play. This question pertains more for the sPvP folks as that’s pretty much the only thing I use my ranger for ATM.

I wanted to see what pets people use and why?

What is your thought process behind selecting the pet?

Do you select something mainly because of the active ability it uses or the stats it has?

Do you select pets opposite of your build? (Ex: If Running Power ranger select pets that provide condi pressure, and if running condi provide pets that have good flat damage).

For Power Builds I tend to select something along the lines of

  • Wolf
  • Hyena
  • Raven
  • Jaguar

For condition builds I tend to pick between:

  • Jungle Spyder
  • Wolf
  • Eagle
  • Salamander Drake

So what are your choices and why?
