GW2 changes by past year ?

Yes, Lots…

A few dungeons got reworked. The one I’m familiar with the most is Ascalonian Catacombs.
As far as new areas there have been a few temporary areas that were released as part of the living story arc but the only permanent PVE area is Southsun Cove.

Also, A.Net has started doing this living story Arc that is soon to end actually. I’m not sure what their plan is once the 1st Arc finishes, if that would be it or if they intend on releasing more living story events but with a different story per say. Right now the living story events are updated every 2 weeks with new things for you to do( not counting winter/holiday break that they just took).

Certain World bosses have been reworked as well. Most notable one to mention is Tequatl the Sunless (really hard to do now from what I hear).

A new tier of gear was released called Ascended (Weapons, Armor and Trinkets so far). The tier is supposed to bridge the gap between Exotics and Legendary. The stats are slightly higher than exotics . Legandary weapon stats have been increased to match the stats of ascended.

There is currently a new WvW Map that is in the works for overflow servers. Its currently being beta tested by certain guilds that have decided to participate.
In WvW they have World ranks now. As you do things in WvW you get ranks or levels specific to that (you get regular XP and wXP as well). Each time your world rank goes up you can chose how to use the points towards a specific mastery. Certain masteries unlock new skills for siege and such. Also on top of that you can get certain buffs if you have a high enough mastery in a certain line.

If you are a sPVP fan they have not actually don’t much yet sadly. They might have released a new map or 2 since you played last (Skyhammer, Spirit watch come to mind as the most recent ones). They did however announce a few cool things that are soon to come.

For a more complete list of things that were released go to https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/

Farming Dragonite Ore..

If your cashed up heavily on gold, one option is to buy giant wintersday gifts. The return of dragonite isn’t excellent, but you will get some amounts faster and get some of your gold back from what you purchase. Throw in some temple farming and it will speed up the acquisition alot. This is what I have been doing.

The giant wintersday gifts have a chance to drop dragonite Ore of either 1 or 50. Its the 50s you really want but the 1s still add up. I only have a small sample size of around 4000 gifts, but it appears I am getting around 120 dragonite per 1000 gifts. Current buy price is around 1s 68c for a gift so 16.8g for 120 dragonite but you get a reasonable amount back, particularly if you get alot of the back recipes. And you also get alot of essence of luck and materials etc.

As I said, its only if you really want to speed up the process and you have alot of gold. You will make a loss and RNG plays a factor on just how much you lose and I haven’t got a reasonable sample size to give accurate figures on how much you will lose. But for me it felt worth it.

Thanks i didnt think of that. I got both the ascended back pieces from the gifts by opening less than 100 of them (totaL)when the event started.. so hopefully i will have much better luck than you have

I’ve decided to make some Celestial Ascended armor for my Elementalist, but it requires about 1500 dragonite ore for a full set. I know that capturing temples is the best way to currently get them (30 Ore per Temple Per Day Per char… Correct me if I’m wrong?) I also know that there are websites that you can go to, to see exactly what temples we are attacking.
But I wanted to see more in general, what servers have organized trains/groups that run temples on a daily basis that I can guest over to.

Also if you know a better way to get some dragonite ore, let me know

Edit: Also i thought i put this in the Players Helping Players section, srry if its in the wrong spot :P

What should I play?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

It’s not wrong to stay in fire as that is your highest DPS on staff. Don’t forget you can combo your fields and get special effects that way. (Using a fire field IE: Lava Font, and then a blast finisher IE: Arcane wave to stack might). That’s just one example I’ll let you play with the fields/finishers as not to spoil the fun: P

Elementalist is a very trait dependant class, so the traits you run make a huge impact on your game play; it’s a late bloomer for that reason as well. Also its one of the harder classes to play effectively in GW2 so doesn’t get discouraged if you fail now and then.

Last tip I will leave to you is not to be afraid to experiment with other weapon sets as well :P

Kind of hard to just pick one so….
Elementalist- Meteor Shower (Staff) on Human Female and Churning Earth (Offhand Dagger)
Warrior- Tie between Human 100 Blades (GS)( Last hit on 100B looks epic on human) and Arcing Arrow(LB).
Ranger- Swoop (GS) and Serpent’s Strike (Sword)
Necromancer- Tainted Shackles + Life Transfer (Death Shroud)
Guardian- Judgment (Tome of Wrath)<- Best looking skill in game IMHO
Thief- Death Blossom
Don’t play Engy or Mesmer.

Question about picking a profession

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

As the posters have said above and you yourself there is no dedicated healer in the game. I understand that you played as a healer in WoW but the combat in gw2 is a bit different. That being said every class in the game can support but the top supports in the game I would have to say are guardian and elementalist.

The guardian is a heavy frontline class that focuses around damage mitigation than outright healing. The guardian does have great healing potential as well compared to some of the other classes.

The Elementalist is a master of elements, and has the ability to swap into Fire, Water, Air, Earth with each element focusing around different roles so to say. Water for the Elementalist tends to focus around support and healing. Elementalist has one of the strongest (non self heals) in the game on staff (Geyser and Healing Rain).

Both of these classes are wanted(needed) in WvW

CountzuCrytus.7256

The questions in character creation dont affect your character stat wise in any way, you wont be stronger or weaker for chosing a certain option versus others. What they do affect is the quests you recieve for early 30 levels or so( different choices follow different story).
Play a class you think is the coolest and if you dont like it you can always make a new one.

Also races dont have any advantage over others, its mainly astetics and starting location

but face tanking is fun… especially if you choose the smallest race so you have this tiny little character TAKING ALL THE HITS IN THE FACE

I mained a lancer when i played TERA so i know how you feel. But GW2 will require you to be a lot more mobile and to dodge roll. And the exact opposite of a coloring book … make sure you stay outside of the red lines :P

what class should i do?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

GW2 doesnt really have any classes that can" face tank". The combat isnt built around it.

Looking at the comment you mentioned it sounds like you might want to look into a guardian though. Theyre a heavy armor class, a soldier per say with ability to use magic. Most of the magic the guardian uses is for defense purposes. So even though you cant hold guard with your back to a wall while your party kills the boss this might be the closest thing to it :P

1). There is a Pvp locker that you can deposit gear to, if you look in your inventory there is a gear sign in the upper right corner of it, click that and click deposit collectables (or right click each individual item). If you have any doubles, you can either keep them in your inventory or salvage them using kits
2). All of the above. As you earn glory you can buy chests depending on what rank you are and open them for a chance of getting a random few pieces of gear that are that rank. Otherwise if you do tPVP you can open win rewards chests and get different type of skins.
You can also use glory and gold by the bit Koda guy and buy certain sets. Lastly you can also use the mystic forge to get certain skins too.
3). Yes, around level 30 or so you will go to Lions Arch which is the main city shared by all races.
4). You don’t have to craft tbh, unless you want ascended gear(highest stats in game). You can always buy materials you need from trading post (press O). But what you should do is make sure you gather everything you see, as it actually gives more exp than killing adds. And eventually when you do decide to craft you can use the materials (dont forget to deposit them to your bank the same way as i mentioned in #1). As far as leather you can salvage (buy salvage kits from merchant) any medium rank armor for a chance of obtaining leather.

Guess what... another class topic

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

Thanks. I am probably gonna go for the ranger. But anymore opinions would be much appreciated!

Let me start out by saying that rangers are a fun class, and ranger is currently my sPVP main. Every class has its strengths and weaknesses and excels at certain tasks or game modes.

WvW isn’t the best place for a ranger unless you are roaming or with a small havoc group then they can be great. But if you join any organized group most of them will ask for you to re-roll something different. Like the poster above me mentioned, the major drawback is the terrible AI with pets, and also the mechanics for a ranger are not meant for large scale battles. If you are running in a GvG group or a zerg and your pet dies in the 1st push or chases after someone who knows where there goes a huge % of your DPS ( and might even prevent you from using some utilities EX: shouts). Before anyone starts flaming at the comment above, I’m not saying it’s impossible to run a ranger in a large scale battle, but rather that it can be done a lot more efficiently with a lot less effort with other classes.

Necromancers bring a lot of utility to the table when it comes to WvW, regardless if you are doing small scale battles or large. The boonstrip they bring to a zerg is priceless. And even though they are a light armor class they have a 2nd health bar to make up for the squish. Playing a necromancer effectively may require you to place a lot of ground target skills (marks, wells ) so if you decide to play one make sure you are either comfortable with them, or are willing to learn.

Taking out 2 most squishy classes (Elementalist and Mesmer) and Warrior and Guardian that only leaves you with the Thief and Engineer. I don’t play an Engineer so I will not comment on one here, but rather focus on thieves as well. Thieves much like rangers are one of the classes that is somewhat situational. Thieves are great scouts and are very mobile. They are fairly squishy but due to the stealth they can avoid a lot damage. They are great roamers and nice in small havoc groups as well, but are harder to play in larger battles.

in PvP

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

Ranger has been my main in sPVP for the last few months (previously ELE). I mainly play as a Power Ranger (I don’t like spirit builds) and I haven’t had any trouble killing people or bursting anyone down. I use longbow/ GS combo, and I’ve seen my AA on longbow hit for 3-5K a hit on people and rapid fire easily do over 10k dmg. As a power ranger I’ve noticed that the class excels at 1v1’s the most. I wouldn’t mind seeing a small buff to them TBH but I wouldn’t consider the ranger as useless as you guys make it seem.

A Race Dilemma....

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

I have several of each race as they are my 2 fav races in GW2. My main is a Norn Guardian; I picked the Norn originally because of their culture and lore behind them. I felt as though the humans have this long history from GW1, the Norn’s lore was much more appealing to me. The only issue that I have with the Norn personally is that because of the way their model is, certain shoulder armor does not look right on them. Some pieces of armor will look either deformed, or too big, or may appear to be slightly floating (The vigil Heavy armor on the other hand looks a lot better on Norn than Human if you ask me for this very reason). The other common complaint I hear from people about Norn is that because of their size, their running animation is a bit slower than the smaller races. So even though you run at the same speed as everyone else, visually it feels slower. On the bright side for the Norn, you can make a mean looking character; you get tattoos and one of the best looking racial armors (T3 Heavy Norn armor) in the game. Also you can turn into a Bear and run half way (exaggerated) across the map with 1 skill.
The humans on the other hand have a good versatility as far as appearance and appear more modern and to what we are used to. They have a decent mix of armor as far as appearance and the ever so Popular T1 light armor for female. The downfall to humans in my opinion is that they are somewhat bland as far as flavor, and there are so many of them.

Help Picking a Profession

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

For WvW the classes I see wanted the most are either a Guardian, Warrior, Elementalist or Mesmer. The Ele tends to have a lot of ground target skills so that might not be your best choice, unless you decide to run D/D which barely has any. The warrior and guardian don’t usually have any ground target unless you use banners or traits that make certain skills ground targetable. There really aren’t many groups that will say no to an extra Mesmer in their comp as the utility it opens up is awesome but for certain things it MAY require ground target (not as much as nades though)

Question about 1h legendary weapons

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

Most 1h legendaries actually look better than the 2h one (my opinion). There is really no drawback to them. (Although you might be better off getting 2 diff 1h legendaries than a copy of the same one)

Thieves dont really have any cool looking 2h legendaries (unless you’re into rainbow ponies… i wont judge.

Other than particle effects of the legendaries the only other benefits of having 2 of them is
-Always guaranteed max stats
-Can swap stat sets out of combat (never have to buy another weapon again) to fit any build).

Posted by: CountzuCrytus.7256

CountzuCrytus.7256

Thank you very much! I appreciate the help. I was considering switching classes but did not know there would be that much of a difference in them like you suggest. If you dont mind me asking, would the ranged character that mainly uses a bow ( i think its the ranger?) be any easier to begin with? Or do you reccomend using a high damage absorbing tank class to start off with as a beginner? Thanks again for the help!

Ranger is an extremely easy profession for a beginner – your pet can ‘tank’ a lot of damage for you/ take a lot of aggro from you (same with necromancer minions, btw – plus Necros have a huge healthpool).
You may want to take into account that elitist players dislike to take rangers along on dungeon runs though (this is more of an endgame-issue).

Warriors are supposedly faceroll easy to play and very attractive in group-play. Personally, I don’t enjoy them at all (tried up to lvl 17, then deleted the character and made a 2nd necro).

It all comes down to playstyle preference, but anything besides an ele (and perhaps a thief) makes for an easier playing experience when just learing your way around the game.

I haven’t even been in any dungeons yet, I have mainly been doing my story and the game objectives that are around or near my story for the experience. I mainly play by myself right now and sometimes don’t even see another player in my area for a long time. But eventually I would love to do some dungeons and get some good loot, so Ill have to keep this in mind if I decide to make a Ranger.

If you stick with the Ele you can conjure a Frost bow that will make your party’s life a LOT easier in the 1st dungeon ( #4 on Frost Bow on Burrows in Pt 1 and Pt3 of Ascalonian Catacombs Explore mode….err since you havent gotten that far yet… you will know what i mean when you see it )

Oh and for attunement swapping my fav combo is for D/D

Air Attunement (f3)>Ride the Lightning(4)>Updraft(5).Fire Attunement(f1)>Burning Speed(3)

BTW Helpful things to know as an Ele that most people dont know starting off:

You can swap attunements while channeling a skill without interrupting the channel(Churning Earth, Drake Breath ETC…)
You can use most cantrips while channeling without interrupting the channel( Only one you cant is mist form). EX: Churning Earth and Lightning Flash.

Hope that Helps

There was an event recently that reduced cost of switching servers but i doubt any of them were free( i think cheapest was like 400 gems) you could wait for another one of those or rally up a mob and take stonemist ( im assuming thats prolly the one u need) and get your stuff that way .

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

Here are some “behind the scenes” facts about this cinematic:

The cinematic was built as a prototype for the new video playback technology.

It was made over a year ago, and we planned to launch it with the original Fractal release. Unfortunately, the tech didn’t get implemented in time and we missed the release window. It was decided that we sit on the cinematikittenil there was a big update to the Fractals.

The 3D character models are (pre)rendered in-engine with our model viewer and matched up with cameras in Maya and After Effects.

While I have special place in my heart for the original GW2 in-engine cinematics (such as the Dugneon Catacombs flashback…a cinematic that I reworked 4 times over the course of development) These new types of pre-rendered videos allow us to work faster, increase the quality, and they perform better on more peoples machines.

There are some pretty exciting cinematics coming in the future…I hope you guys will receive them as well as the Fractals piece.

Thanks again!

Can we expect cinematics similar to this one (that uses the new engine) in the future?

As a 1st class in gw2 the Ele is going to be hard for you, but look on the bright side if you manage to get good with the Ele most other classes will be a walk in the park when you try them out ?
The ele is a class that its play style changes completely depending on what weapons you are using. So if you aren’t doing so well with a certain weapon try a different one. Me for example I couldn’t play Staff Ele starting off, it just didn’t work, but leveling I fell in love with D/D.

Also I have about a handful of friends that have attempted to play an ele and quit before hitting level 25 so don’t get discouraged if you have a hard time at the beginning. Also no shame in quitting for now to play a diff class and coming back to it later :P

Yeah I figured as much :p lots of people who find nothing wrong with their class or know how to play don’t even visit the forum.. or the class forums.

hmm.. yeah im aware most classes can be either melee or ranged, its just that the playstyle also changes in some cases, quite drastically. I mean not just the fact you’re standing further away from the enemy, but that then you might be killing it slowly with conditions and stuff. heck I think i just need to find a list of all the classes weapon set skills explained or something lol. then find what i like.

its been a while since i played, for end game stuff, are there a lot of cookie cutter builds? or people expecting you to be in specific builds if you’re playing a certain class? i always liked customization.

It varies on what you’re doing. Most dungeons for example people don’t really care as to if you use a specific build or gear set as long as you’re not dying or causing other people die. On the other hand if you join an organized WvW Group the Commander might expect you to perform certain activities (Example: when I played my Ele in a WvW guild I was expected to run a Staff build and throw water fields at certain times).

If you want a list of all the classes and their skills you can go to www.gw2skills.net it’s one of the nicer build websites (they’re a little slow on getting updates out after patches , but the way the website is set up its understandable …but other than that it’s great).

For a well rounded class i would recommend either a Warrior or Ranger. Both are fairly easy to play (as far as mechanics are concerned). The warrior can use just about every non magical weapon in the game (except Short bow) and the ranger has a good variety of both melee and long range.
Also a sidenote: Just about every class can fit most roles in a group
(My personal preference is to stay away from the class specific forums. True you may find some helpful info here and there but its mostly people flaming how either the class is useless or how badly it needs a nerf.)

Can’t use daggers either. :P

Why use a toothpick when you can use a sword :P
