Personally, I think it would be interesting to see a heal for Rangers that either gave their pet a really strong hot or could heal their pet heavily on a short cd while providing a relatively weak heal for the ranger. This could be a way to address pet survival without making an unkillable pet OP.
Also, a conjured healing weapon from an ele could be interesting, but they’ve already made a conjure weapon for every element…
Played guradian/warrior heavies heaps..but i still have a full exotic P.V.T w/ berserker trinkets thief just gathering dust.
Looking for solid fractal build.
Willing to compromise on high spike damage in favor of consistent good damage and ability to survive more than one shot. I am comfortable with boss animations and how to evade.
Have all good quality weapons, so recommends can be sword/dagger/pistol/shortbow..I am not fussy on sticking to specific weapons just for the sake of it.
Thanks in advance.
Bring full zerker gear, spec 25/30/0/0/15, use D/D for single target fights, P/P for single target non-melee fights, either S/P or short bow for AoE trash, and bring your A game because surviving on a thief is a lot harder than with a warrior or guardian.
You’d think an engineer would be an awesome sniper…but as others said already, a warrior is really what you’re looking for.
It worked in GW1. I know it sounds scary for people that never played that game, but it’s really not anything to be worried about.
So after the blog, my suspicions are correct. Nothing in the blog is happening this year. Legendaries don’t seem to be coming until 2014. And as I stated before, looks like it’s going to take “many months” at least according to the new blog.
So we got another blog, basically telling us to wait for upcoming features.
So…did you not read the blog? A bunch of these changes are coming December 10th.
One of those changes is that you can level a character in PvE through doing sPvP. That’s huge!
If anything, this blog shows you on how wrong you were with your original post. =P
I suspect like most games, it will be unreasonable to gain any levels just through PvP. It will take like 10 times longer. I’ve been through it many times before when games make it possible to level in PvP.
What games were you playing?
I leveled characters in WoW through PvP and it was only slightly slower.
Besides, it really seems like at this point you’re determined to assume the worst possible scenarios for anything not explicitly outlined. With that perspective, I don’t see how we can expect anything constructive to come from here…
Way to go, Jon…making me look bad!
Aww, don’t be such a grouch! Oh wait…
As for the new heals, I’m sure this will be good for some classes, but on my thief, I feel like I already have some of the best heals in the game. It’s going to be tough to add something that will appeal to me more than Withdraw or Hide in Shadows.
P.s. I’d rather see more Elites added than either heals or utilities.

Bad:
- Rank removal
- PvE skins in PvP
- Skillpoints required for new skills. I only have one level 80, the rest of my characters are level 2 PvP only characters, I am NOT going to be forced to PvE just to get new skills in PvP!
Good:
- Everything else.
I’m optimistic about this but I am completely diappoonted in the above.
A ) That is perhaps the best misspelling if the word ‘disappointed’ I have ever seen.
B ) It’s even better if you read it in a southern accent (and now you’re hearing it in your head. You’re welcome)
C ) Skill points will be very easy to attain not having everything unlocked at the start will probably only really affect people who are newer to the game or newer to a class. For these people, it will help prevent all the choices from being overwhelming.
I believe that the Edge of the Mists is a huge folly.
I like the idea of new maps. I don’t like the idea of pandering to servers who have huge queues simply because they have huge queues. Those people choose to be on the servers with queues, they should have to suck it up – that’s how population balance is supposed to happen.
I believe that giving them something to do instead of queuing will devalue the main Scoring-game, possibly to the point where people want to do Edge of the Mists instead of the Scoring-game.
When it comes to the smaller servers, I find it more difficult to think what may happen, but I think it could get people playing for it’s PvE content when the enemies are thin in number.
So, either you’re assuming that people knew what the WvW queue was like for their server before they rolled there or you think that people should just be punished for landing in what turned out to be a high queue server…
Neither one of those really stands as a good argument.
If everything can be bought with gold, now does that mean we will have people with credit card in hand buying armors that previously were signs of prestige?
If that’s the case, will “prestige” be moved to rewards tied to leaderboard/ladder position or divisions?
I think prestige will be something mostly exclusive to finishers in the future. I doubt they’ll limit people from continuing the look of their PvE character just because something like TA armor was arbitrarily assigned to a high PvP rank.
Yea…I’m wondering what the cost of these things will be too, as I can see that it will be very tough for them to balance. However, if this is supposed to give players a chance to level through sPvP instead of through PvE (which is AWESOME!), then they’ll have to set a reasonable price.
Either way, I definitely like the direction of this change.
The things I want to vote for aren’t on your poll:
- New instruments (bring us a guitar!)
– New emotes/dancesThat would be for the ‘’silly stuff’’.
I think you may get some skewed results by grouping up all non-traditional items and using a box o’ fun as an example. =/

I don’t think it’s very realistic to expect ladders to be well balanced as soon as they’re reset. =P
I would love to see support as something meaningful, but with the current design of dungeons, I think it would take a huge overhaul to do this.
Also, PvP already has had huge fluctuations in balance with very minor changes as well as a very bunker-heavy meta. Any large skill changes to help support in PvE would probably demolish any semblance of balance in PvP without ton of time and effort.
That being said…I hope I’m wrong on this.
Why use a staff on a Guard?
Because 1 ) the person probably just likes the style of the staff better and 2 ) because most content is forgiving enough for a group to clear it, even with very sub-optimal choices being made.
Also, to the people that are talking down on Necros: Take a look at the group composition of the team that already beat 50 Fractals → https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/fractured/Ding-Fractal-level-50/
Unless you really prefer thief gameplay, go Guard. A thief isn’t useless by any stretch, but you’ll have to work a lot harder to survive and will generally provide less to the group than a guardian (assuming you play it well).
My main character is my thief, but I generally play my Guardians when it comes to fractals and most dungeons.
tPvP isn’t dead, but the overall PvP community certainly isn’t near what it used to be. Some of the biggest examples of this are:
- the disappearance of the Guru SotG
– dead forums on IntoTheMists.com
– near-dead PvP forums on GuildWars2Guru.com
Ever since Fractals came out it created problems and a lot of players left this game because of fractals.
Everything related with fractals…. it always creates problems.
How many players play level 30~50 fractals? probably 0.0005% of all gw2 community.
When will Anet realize ppl dont like fractals…….
My conclusion is Fractals must be gone forever…Fractals will never be gw2 it never was and it never will be past and future~ period. It must be gone……
The best contents of this game was “The Tower of Nightmares”….it was by far the best MMORPG contents ive ever played. that is wat i call GW2.
No….just no.
The Tower of Nightmares, along with the rest of the living story has had 0 appeal to me. Fractals is easily the most interesting update for me in a long time.
Please, don’t assume you’re the entire playerbase. =/
Not everything in the game should be targetted at casual players. For any MMO to have good retention, it needs to be accessible to gamers of all levels of dedication.
Yea, I noticed this last night too. It’s not gamebreaking, but it is annoying.
Enough with the armor skins. Let’s see some more creative and/or fun items on the gemstore.
At least take the musical instrument mechanics and make a guitar.
anything without flames would be good
Seeing as the set is called “Flamekissed”, I think that’s not a very realistic expectation.
Really, I wouldn’t be surprised if they just took another mediocre light armor set and add flame effects, just like they did with medium and heavy armor.
Congrats! I was really hoping that no one would hit level 50 fractal this fast, but I’m not surprised that it happened.
Eh, the poll doesn’t really give good answer options for my position. I like Skyhammer for what it is, but I don’t like it that much as a real competitive map. It’s a fun map for casual bumping around so that you can have those who-can-knock-who-off-first fights, even if that doesn’t make for the most balanced team strategy.
I’m definitely looking forward to the livestream. I’ve missed having something like that ever since the Guru SotG stopped playing.
Tripwire is actually pretty useful when point bunkering in sPvP. Outside of that, pretty useless.
Point bunkering…on a thief?
I would argue that point bunkering on a thief isn’t useful. =P
Evasion. Not Stealth. It works.
Even if it meets your standard of what you consider to “work”, it’s just not as good as the main bunker classes.
Take a Guardian, for instance:
– Cleanses conditions better
– Buffs allies
– Can rez allies better (without losing point capturing through stealth)
And here’s the main one: They can knock people off points. Surviving while standing on a point is great, but a Guardian will win games for you while bunkering because they can run to a point, then knock them off and immobilize to decap the point.
I find fractal runs enjoyable and I prefer to have a challenge in my dungeons, even if it prevents me from completing it.
So…not a waste of time for me. =P
Is it possible to put a long duration poison on Mai before the cannon phase to prevent this? I mean, if she’s invuln, does it clear off the poison or does the poison just deal no damage and not reduce healing?

Personally, I’m glad to see a return of this content. ~shrug~
Do you have poison on the boss? I mean, if you got a poison field on Mai (such as from thief shortbow) and stacked the duration high enough, could you prevent this from happening?
I don’t remember if she wipes condis when she ports.
I heard someone else mention this before. Does it give a warning box before it lets you do this like it does when you override a rune/sigil with a new one?
The needle trap can be used on the dredge suit boss of the final fractal.
True, but you can also do this by just using Body Shot (since it’s a fight best suited for ranged anyways).
I do agree that the trap line could use some love, but I understand why this hasn’t happened yet. I mean, thieves still have plenty of good, viable utility skills and there are definitely bigger fish to fry when it comes to issues worth of dev attention.
However, I don’t think a 10 second reduction to all traps would really break anything.
Lesson of the video: When faced with a 1 vs 1, just cheese your way through it with Thieves Guild and Ambush. =P
This exactly. Build too tough for you…NP just be a cheapass and call three thieves during a duel.
Of course, the best way to counter this is to either stealth or flee from the fight until Thieves Guild goes away, which is something the warrior didn’t do…
What exactly do you win for looking pretty in guild wars 2? Are you saying that all I have to do is buy pretty armor from the gemstore to win?
Pay2Win what?
Pay2Win the fashion contest?
Seriously though, I think a lot of people aren’t really thinking critically about this T3 vs Flamekissed stuff.
You could always buy gems and convert them to gold to buy a set of cultural armor. It costs you about $25 at the current conversion rate, which I believe is about the same price to buy something like the sparkly mounts that WoW sells.
I’m not sure why so many people think that T3 armor is such a hard to attain vanity item, especially when they compare it to legendaries. You can get a full set of T3 for about 119 gold compared to a legendary, which will often cost AT LEAST ten times that amount.
You don’t need to tie an effect to a button to make it active. How active an effect is depends on active it demands the player to be. Effect = Button is a simple, effective way to do it, but not the only one.
In the case of Diamond Skin, it’s true that there is no button associated with it. But it needs to be maintained, and it can be counter-played. Anyone can nullify its effect, and the elementalist must work to get its effect back. This creates some sort of dancing between gaining and losing the effect, which is determined by the skill of the two combatants. This make the trait highly interactive and playable.
In comparison, passive traits like Dhuumfire are the opposite. They proc at pretty much anything that hits. They can’t be countered. They don’t require special or unique playing to be activated. They don’t depend on the player skill. They’re mindless and unhealthy to the game.
I would go as far as argue that skills like Enduring Pain are more passive than traits like Diamond Skin. Why? 1) Because the active maintenance required to make use of the Diamond Skin’s effect is far more demanding than simply prssing a single button. 2) Because once Endure Pain is activated, the opponent can’t do anything but wait until the effect ends, while the opportunity to counter-play Diamond skin is always there.
Let’s put it in simpler means and with different words: Diamond Skin is only a passive trait if no one attacks the elementalist.
^ Thank you. Someone gets it.
No one here is defending pure passive stuff like healing signet, signet of renewal, etc.
No one here is arguing that we should have more PvP abilities/traits that don’t actively engage the player.
Diamond Skin is an active trait disguised as a passive trait.
Which button do you press to activate it again? I can’t remember.
nailed it again
If you think that good PvP comes from hitting more buttons 1) you’re in the wrong game and 2) even more reason to not continue reading.
Also, hooray for throwing out rhetorical one-liners instead of actually using reasoning and logic.
Some of the instabilities are actually quite bad. For example…
1) Barbaric: Only two-handed weapons are effective.
——> a pure shortbow thief for all 4 fractals? I guess at that certain fractal level, we shouldn’t invite any thieves to the party.2) Finesse: Two-handed weapons are very ineffective
——> underwater fractal is gonna take foooooreeeeeeeeveeeeeeerKeep rolling until it’s not Underwater pls.
3) Doctor Death: Skills from the healing slot cause death
——> wtb AH Guardians/healing shouts Warriors/vampiric well Necros/water field Elementalist ONLY
Yes, instead of providing unique difficulties, they definitely should have just put up some generic ‘Enemies now deal more damage, lolz’ mechanic so that people who can’t be bothered to build solid groups with friends can continue to pug their way through easy content.
/sarcasm
I stopped reading when you said that Diamond Skin will be passive.
On the most technical level, it does provide a passive benefit, but it requires active attention to use defensive cooldowns early and to watch your health so that it stays above 90%. This is why it’s different than something like Signet of Renewal which is basically an excuse to ignore one of your utility skill slots.
okay lets put it like this its a passive trait that requires active play happy now? read the rest please and don’t QQ about things we both know you knew how i meant it
Edit: changed the descriptionYour logic still doesn’t add up. In that “perfect moment” you outline, the player still has to be active in how they play since they have to be especially aware of physical attacks. They have to be active in watching their health to know exactly when that 90% threshold is broken.
I mean, if you think that this isn’t active enough play, let’s complain about flanking doing extra damage for rangers. I mean, sure they have to be aware of when they are to the side of their enemy, but they aren’t hitting any extra buttons! And what about Heartseeker. It gives extra bonus to low health players, so thieves have to watch enemy health and adjust what abilities they use accordingly, but they’re not hitting additional buttons!
The point here is that you’re getting caught up in thinking that active play has to involve pressing buttons, but in truth, active play is what makes players have to think and consider additional factors which drive the choice of their action. This is exactly what Diamond Skin does.
Your logic doesn’t add up. By your definition every passive ability is an active one. Healing Signet is active because if you don’t pay attention you will take more damage than it heals you for. Endure Pain is active because you have to try to avoid condition damage. Automated Response and Berserker Stance are active because you have to avoid direct damage. Hell, toughness is an active stat because you need play actively to avoid condition damage.
No, you’ve missed the point if that’s what you think. Healing signet is 100% passive because you don’t need to do anything but forget about healing with something like that. It doesn’t change the way you play. Signet renewal is the same way. There’s no change to the decisions you make with something like that.
The difference with Diamond Skin is that it requires you to play differently. Instead of waiting until you’re at low health to use a heal, you will want to use it early against a condi-heavy enemy. Against something like a thief, you’re better waiting until you’re at a low enough health where you won’t overheal.
When going against a condi-heavy enemy, you’ll also want to use dodges and defensive cooldowns early. Instead of dodging big bursty hits, you’ll want to dodge even medium hits while above 90% hp.
These are ways that the playstyle with this trait is more active than it is without it.
This is different from something like healing signet where you play the exact same way as you would with a normal heal, aside from not thinking about using a heal.
@ Sensotix: You’re bunkering up in a bunch of defensive rhetoric without listening to what I’m saying. I’m not saying Diamond Skin is balanced. I’m not saying it’s not overpowered or underpowered. If you’re arguing against me from that perspective, than we can probably stop here because you’re not even reading what I’m saying and are instead just getting upset that I’m disagreeing with you. If you want to check out the points I have made and address what I have said, feel free to, but don’t bother arguing against points I’m not making.
I love random clipping fixes. =)

How is that Anet’s fault? Please explain further..
ANet obviously walked over to the houses of players on his teams and unplugged their computers.
Submitted a bug report?

I was thinking about what to get some people for the upcoming holiday season and I realized that one of the nice things about GW2 having no sub fee is that I can give it as a gift and don’t have to worry about guilting someone into a sub fee. This was probably one of the big reasons I never gave anyone WoW as a gift back when that was my MMO of choice.
Thank you for all the great write-ups. I’m deciding between warrior and thief based on the replies. I’m partial to stealthy gameplay, but I’m a bit worried about their incoming nerfs. Does everyone see the thief as solo viable after December 10th? Or would I better rolling a warrior?
It’s hard to say exactly where the thief will be with the initiative changes, but I don’t think there will really be an issue.
One of the best roaming thief builds is a D/D build like Yishis uses and while it will have an initiative regen reduction from two talents being nerfed (Opportunist and Infusion of Shadow), overall initiative regen is being increased, so we’ll have to play a bit to see if it’s really a noticeable increase or decrease.
Personally, I think we’ll be fine since the Opportunist nerf hits PvE thieves more as you don’t land as many attacks against a moving target in PvP like you do against a boss in PvE. Even then, the build is far from initiative starved and would need to be hit really hard before that became an issue.
There will be less viable builds as the sword builds are getting hit hard (especially S/D) as is D/P builds that use Shadow Arts talents to have high stealth uptime, but I wouldn’t consider those optimal builds for WvW anyways.
Btw, if you want to get a taste for good WvW roaming, check out Yishis’ latest vid:

I’m not an expert on warriors by any stretch, but they look to be taking a hit on the dec 10th patch with the Unsuspecting Foe change if nothing else.

Keep rolling until it’s not Underwater pls.
