robertul, it is players like you that make me cringe. To those that suggested making my own group do you really believe I would be posting here had I not gotten fed up of making group after group only to have them fall apart because some dink decided that skipping is the only way they can play? I can maybe MAYBE get one or two group a month that wont skip, and it usually involves noobs.

Filter better.
But i’m curious. Why don’t you want to skip?

Control is not and will never be a thing in GW2 while :

1.The defiant buff still exists in the game
2.Bosses and enemies don’t have cast bars so we can see what they’re doing to interrupt it.

For the two reasons above control is useless. It’s dead, buried, let’s move on.

You seem to think people are just focusing on damage without having support – and that part is just plain wrong.

I wish this was true, but sadly the average player has literally no idea about combo fields, reflects, stealth or anything. They just press1 and try to not die, because players spread misinformation both on the forums and ingame.

Support is and always was a critical part of GW2.
Blocks, reflects, stealth, protection – all are crucial elements of any speed run. If you think that zerker parties focus only on damage that’s wrong. You need the proper active damage mitigation aspects down if you’re going to attempt to burn a boss down in melee as a zerker team.

Thats what we talking about since … months.

So no – support has not been neglected – it’s just that people don’t understand that Your role in combat has nothing to do with the gear that you wear. An ele can support her party with water fields and might stacking as a full berserker.
A guardian can drop reflects, cure conditions and use protection on allies while being full zerker.

See above. I even see a staff pvt guardian in fractal lvl49 (i know, nobody cares) and when i asked why he uses staff on the molten duo, his answer was for support. After i asked what he means? Healing with the orb? Swiftness for nothing? Might when the ele in the party do it better for twice the duration? Or the CC ward which is useless here? You know what was the answer? A kick. And honestly, i wasn’t rude that time, but tl;dr, people aren’t aware of how support works at all. I still talk about the very average playerbase.

What people fail to understand is that being a support does not mean spamming heals in your cleric’s geared guardian. If you’re doing that you’re just playing badly and that’s the reason people don’t want you on their runs.

Try to do dungeons in full greens to imitate the WoW feeling, when you aren’t overgeared for a dungeon. AC for example with full of lvl80 characters in full exotics with optimized builds of course will breeze trough it after the 21125623627th run, when the players will now every rock in that instance ….
People learned the content, adapted to it and geared for it.

High armor bosses exists, but gimmicky mechanics makes it meaningless. Legendary mining suit and ice ele says hi.

The content will be balanced around the following. Avoid most attacks without vigor and survive encounter in full defense gear. Sadly, the middle ground will suffer, because they aren’t tanky enough nor have enough damage to burst enemies down.

And build diversity is in the game. If you can’t see it …
Even Anet learn how to make it better. I hope i don’t need to remind you to world bosses. These structure like enemies make every gearset with precision, ferocity obsolete and condi specced characters can do literally nothing.
With the reworked Teq it got a liiiiiiittle bit better. These players can be useful around the encounter when you need to defend turrets.
Same with the new Wurm. Except the burst phase, there is no point to use the above builds on the boss, its only good for handle the adds.

AC is a horrible example, since post patch you can duo easily. Hell, you can solo it in 10 minutes …

The sad thing is that I went into a party from lfg and I was told to ping my gear- I did and because I’m a pow/cond mesmer, they booted me. Check later in the day and I see a flood of “zerker only- ping gear” and “selling p3 zerker only” and the beautifully classy “zerker or gtfo” …. -.-;;

I hope it won’t be a surprise, but you can make your own group advertisement with your own rules.

I think this is very relevant.
One thing the whole “there will always be a meta/optimal build” argument ignores is that although it is true that a “meta” would always exist, the said “meta” for different situations/encounters need not be the same.

Let’s get more ascended sets for each encounter. Pure fun.

I’m excited to see how it would turn out. Now people don’t even want to get one “meta gearset”.

Last night.
Pug gear checked, zerker gear with golemancer runes.
Everybody wonders whyyyyyyyyyy, so we asked him.
“Strength runes are too expensive.”
So we tried to explain Scholar is still better (or can be), cheaper and at least buy some ruby orbs, those are cheap as kitten.
Namecalling, block, leave. But i wanted to send him a few ruby orbs. :C

Another one. Finally i met a sword ranger. But he refused to ever use FGS (we got 2 ele) and pushed away Alpha all the time. It turned out he couldn’t speak english, so he didn’t understand a single word. :/

Conditions will always be crap as long as there is a 25 cap.

Could someone explain this to me? I was looking at trying a Condition Damage build (perhaps Carrion or Rabid) but have not obtained the armor yet for my level 80 Thief yet. What is so bad about Condition Damage?

I’m looking for advice. I don’t know what I am doing with regards to builds. I’m an extremely casual altaholic.

  • Burn stacks in duration.
  • Poison stacks in duration.
  • Confusion is meaningless due to slow mob attacks.
  • Bleed has a 25 stack cap. That means if your mesmer and warrior apply 20 bleeds on the target, because they have a minor trait that can’t be turned off, you can only apply 5 bleed, potentialy reduce YOUR damage by 80%.

All of the above reasons conditions has a maximum cap in damage, that can’t be increased further, since no damage modifier affects them nor vulnerability help and even if you reach an uber brutal max stack of conditions an average power user still outdamage you with auto attacking. Without buffs.

Well, Myst has some valid points.
Attitude can kill a run, but if you don’t write your advice like a 10 year old kid (lol, xd and such) pugs take it offensive and blame you for everything for the whole run.
Being bad is not gear dependent, indeed BUT …
Mixed groups are better overall? Nope, nope, all of my nope.
If you mix zerker and non-zerker (i mean full pvt/cleric/etc.) it will be a big mess.

Of course, you can mix those players in a party, but a full zerk benefits from the higher damage more, than the facetank ability of a pvt character and vica versa. A pvt group won’t have any benefit if (IF!) the zerker licks the floor and they 4 man it. Get it?

.Support abilities not being gear dependent is actually massive BS

Gear dependent: Healing Breeze, Healing Meditation, Staff’s Empower, all of the symbols, Orb of Light, Selfless Daring trait, Virtue of Resolve – all of those abilities have two things in common firstly they scale with healing power and secondly they are not worth using (with virtue of resolve being remotely useful)

I said most of them. =] If you want to nitpick, don’t forget Wall of Reflection.

Also i used AH build not because i thought AH heals my team but because it promoted supportive gameplay while not being laughable.

Sorry, people often misunderstood the tooltip, but i still can’t see why it’s good for you, or anybody else in your party for that matter, that you use this build with this gear.

If they lower the damage requirement to kill mobs, that would make full optimized berserker faceroll easy.
And honestly, until you can tank and heal mobs to death, damage oriented builds are the way to go.

Remove stats from gear, all stats should come from traits and passive signets. There you go, no more complains about zerkers.

i like this, armor should just be plain armor.

Same as in pvp? But how would you solve the loss in stats? Or Anet should rebalance everything outside of pvp?

If such a mechanic get implemented, i still want to suggest to make a boss with high regen that can’t killed until a certain treshold of dps is reached, similar to the CoFp1 effigy and let see how “diversity” is a good idea when you make a gearset obsolete.

Most of your support abilities aren’t gear dependent and since you wear Knight armor i assume you don’t care about healing, not if it is good or anything.

i finally settled in hammer/staff AH build with knight gear. I was really happy with it because it was giving me exactly what i wanted, reactive support game play with decent survivability and damage

What kind of support the AH guardian gives that zerkers unable to do?

I keep hearing that nothing but dps matters. In that case, why would you ever bring a guardian or a mesmer? Just run with eles, one war and thieves.

Until the balance of attack patterns are so slow that it’s dodgeable often without vigor and other active defenses negate infinite amount of damage, while totally independent from gear, zerker stays the best option.

The other thing people wish for is unavoidable damage. Damage that can’t be mitigated, something like Slick and Sparky have is a cheap mechanic. I’m not sure it would solve anything.

As haviz pointed out and i often say it too, fail is not punishing enough. You wiped? Not a big deal, WP back, try again. Sometimes you can waypoint back halfway inside the dungeon.

Can someone enlighten me about how the earth attack of Subject Alpha works exactly? I’m always standing inside him without melee assist and get almost one shotted on Ele.

They fixed it so standing inside him no longer avoids it. You have to dodge (near impossible in melee). You can sort of predict it and if your group has enough dps you can just fgs burst before it becomes a problem. But yeah them fixing that attack is the reason i decided not to pug coe on my ele anymore.

Yeah, dodge is sadly a no go.
Another issue i rarely experienced, that Alpha can’t be knockbacked to the wall.
Immune to mesmer focus and GS5, guardian pull can’t even move him, ports back to his original position after a LH knockback etc.
Bad luck or there is something again i’m not aware of?

ps: Warrior fear works like a charm on him.

I always wondered why a lot of people bring this up all the time. Even WoW had this. One “way to go” build. Done.
Hell even here you need to swap out some traits in some situatons to get more benefit and hendo above me pointed out this really well.

Yep, one of the reasons I don’t play WoW. That’s just horrid. Guess you never played Guild Wars 1.

I would love to hear a less nostalgic opinion about this topic, but i don’t want to derail the thread.

I waited on lfg for 10 minutes with the following (CoF) and no succes.
“meta builds,link gear,lvl80,no ranger/engi/necro,p1&2”

I changed the first part to “zerker only”, it got removed in 10 seconds from the LFG and now im supressed. Even the game hate zerkers.

Guardian, Ele, Thief or maaaaaaaaaybe Warrior.

Guard is more like a defensive support, tough it can be still deal a lot of damage.
Ele is offensive support in the form of boons and high damage and situational utility (icebow, earth elemental, sandstorm, etc.).
Thief has high stealth uptime, so it makes skipping parts a breeze.
Warrior is also an offensive supporter with banners, buffs etc but as others said, its a really straightforward class.

Sadly, for the zerker haters of course, those “filthy elitists” can use dodge too, that way defensive stats are still irrevelant.
Weapon and utility based defense such as blocks and reflects are still independent from stats.
Elite guilds won’t pug (i hope so, don’t hurt yourselves) and they breeze trough content.
Pugs will be pugs, refuse to read, refuse to wear zerker, refuse to dodge, refuse everything just to make those “filthy elitists” angry, especially with those new GM traits. More healing eles, more condi guardians, more bearbow.
Gearcheck or find a decent guild. Or join to the dark side of the pvt crowd …

I use a perma-chill build with frost drake and frost trap. It has its moments. A lot of people underestimate perma-chill on bosses or mini-bosses if they are unable to remove it, even at the expense of DPS in the case of bosses that cannot be burst down as quickly.

Spotter is nice but speccing 20 in Marksmenship is a bit expensive for me. The other 3 traits are just not desirable.

Isn’t bosses immune to the CD increase of chill?

Putting 30 points in Marsmanship gives 300 power (great) and 30% condi duration (can be good with vulnerability) meanwhile giving both you and the pet Opening strike with a guaranteed crit and those apply vuln, which is good at the start of the fight.
Also changing Remorseless to Signet of the beastmaster enables you to go invulnerable for 12 sec (15 if you are sylvari) which can be good in dredge fractal for example. But yeah, power is for exploiters, stack defensive stats.

Because you can dodge, blind, block or go invulnerable.

What about a build based on having up retaliation as often as possible?
Would that work for fractals?

Nope. You don’t want to get hit, but if the playstyle of doing ~300 damage while you get killed fits you … do it.

edit:

With the hammer build you can apply perma protection which is a net 33% damage reduction which is waaaaay more superior to any toughness you can get from your gear.

Oh and don’t forget about weakness, that can reduce the incoming damage even further.

Speak with scouts, they show the nearby heart events which you can complete and try to keep up with your personal story. It gives a nice amount of XP.

1. Don’t dodge the first point.

2. You answered yourself. If you want to make sure every mob hits you, thus you can cleave / aoe dps them down, you want to get agro and drag them to a los spot, since you know, you don’t have a tank to pull them together with a threat mechanics.

3. Indeed. Don’t use it if you don’t want it is the easiest solution.

I mean players are already superior to mobs, due to intelligence (players aren’t that stupid as AI) and gear (players can adapt to encounters, finding the least resistance aka meta builds).
That what PvE is in every MMO. Scripted, predictable and has less variety.

So tell us more about how ranging prevents her from using her melee attack, which incidentally applies weakness and 6 bleed stacks. Or Lupicus’ kick/doubleslash of doom.
Or any melee attack for that matter.

Go on, tell us it’s an exploit.

I don’t understand. Do you think (or wish) this game was designed for players to stand still in one position, at a certain distance from the enemy, never moving or dodging, so they can DPS the enemy while it sits still and uses one kind of attack?

As as I mentioned in my edit, the fact that you can do that is bad enemy design. And players are exploiting that bad design. See how I correctly used that word in bold there?

I don’t accept that developers in GW2 intended for such a boring game, especially considering the awesome mechanics they have implemented.

And, yes, you can stand at a certain distance from the Spider so that she stands in place, misses her web, doesn’t move closer and only throws poison fields you can easily dodge. Was that intended? Did they design all her attacks and AI so that players can just trick her into not using them?

You clearly don’t understand the mechanics of that boss fight. Educate yourself and please stop spreading misinformation.

If you range it (aka easy mode afk pew pew), it punishes you.
If you melee it, it applies weakness (aka less deepz from you) and does hard pressure with bleeds.

That would be less exploity when a tanks holds agro to DPS it without any issue and a healer heals you when you make a mistake, right?

2. Indeed, but it’s not a big think, it happens in other games, just don’t bother white knights, because tanks can pack up mobs.

3. If they aren’t ok with the damage, they could reduce it, but nothing happened. Since there is no official statement about the unintended behavior, we can assume more or less FGS works as intended.

If someone finds it “cheap”, their problem, players already has an upper hand due to gear and intelligence against mobs so … yeah, don’t try to find excuses. Nothing personal against you.

Doing certain actions (stacking) to prevent enemy attacks. (for example, Spider Queen at AC)

Go in melee range on the open field, it won’t do the aoe poison on close targets. Stop spreading misinformation.

Stacking on a corner to gather enemies there, taking advantage of their dumb AI and LoS.

LoS works in every game, just unneeded due to tanks.

FGS Fiery Rush (This is a bit of a sensitive issue, but I personally consider it an exploit. Though, I understand why some people wouldn’t.)

The FGS glitch is really questionable, but i think it’s an unintended use of the skill which developers found fun. Any official statment about the behavior of FGS?
