@draxynnic – First, a word about recon missions. Recon missions are not done by large ships floating in the air. They are done by small squadrons in secret. So while the festival is going on, the zephyrites had plenty of opportunities to send out small squadrons. Also, there was no way they would take off right away, first the information from the recon missions would need to be interpreted. send missions to different places in tyria, ask people what they knew, collate and triangulate. It takes time. The rebuilding of Lions Arch provides excellent cover. But news of the dragon’s roar was too big to be ignored by a cult that specializes in elder dragons. They had to investigate. There’s no way the Master of Peace didn’t know.
New Skill – “Frightened was Marjory”
It’s as if people want to be bitterly disappointed with Anet. I don’t get it.
I have trouble with the speculation that the zephyrites weren’t aware of Mordy’s awakening. The festival lasted quite a few weeks, and the awakening was pretty big news. Word would of had to have gotten to the Minister of Peace.
Strictly speaking, our characters didn’t know that the roar was Mordremoth the Elder Dragon awakening in the jungles – our characters didn’t actually see that cutscene. We just heard a dragon roar. It wasn’t until after S2E1 – which is to say, after the Zephyrites crashed – that we really confirmed what was going on. Until then, in-character there were some who figured that a dragon was stirring, but nobody had any idea where. Mr E’s letter directing us to Brisban was the first indication that anyone had made any connection whatsoever between the jungle and the roar.
More importantly, if my speculation is right (or even if it’s wrong and the egg is exactly what it appears) it’s likely that the Zephyrites have been preparing the jungle sanctuary since they recovered Glint’s remains in 1320AE. So even if, hypothetically, the Zephyrites had known Mordremoth was in the jungle and waking up as soon as that roar happened, they’d already committed six years of effort to the sanctuary, possibly to the point where it just wasn’t practical to do anything other than go ahead despite the added risk.
I still disagree with your position that nobody knew where the roar came from. Here’s why. The first thing that comes to mind is that in our conversations with the Pale Tree, it seems heavily implied that she knew from the beginning. There fore someone knew.
Now, the roar was a pretty big deal, everyone heard it. Many of them attended the festival that the zephyrites held for the stated purpose of rebuilding Lions Arch. There is no way that the story of Scarlett and the roar didn’t reach the ears of the master of peace.
Now as the head of an ancient organization dedicated to an elder champion dragon, it’s your job to check out possible dragon roars. As the head of the order, you’re probably well aware of the existence of Mordy. You probably have a good idea of where his final resting place is. It’s a simple matter to send scouts to get better information.
It’s my position that not only did the zephyrites know that it was Mordy awakening, it’s also my position that is why there went there.
Well, Glint was suspect before mostly because she was mysterious, and because she did use a lot of deception to cover her tracks. Now that we’ve got the full story of her origins and motivations, from sources that we’re trustworthy…
…I’d probably be more inclined to trust Glint if she was still alive than the Pale Tree. And I say this as someone who is firmly not in the camp of the ‘pale tree is a dragon champion’ or any of the other fifth-column conspiracy theories.
You are right, though, that there’s no guarantee that the child will have the wisdom and temperament of the mother. Parentage and upbringing might help in that regard, but we can’t be 100% sure. Mind you, if the power has to be contained somewhere… better something that might be friendly than something that we know is hostile.
I also have a speculation (posted here, just before the update) that the egg may be more than just an egg – Glint may have found a way to imprint her personality on it before fighting Kralkatorrik (Glint certainly knew that Kralkatorrik was going to come for her, and it would explain why one egg was kept ‘in stasis’ – that egg wasn’t intended for reproduction, but for cheating death). If that does prove to be the case, then it would make that ‘hatchling’ more trustworthy.
I have trouble with the speculation that the zephyrites weren’t aware of Mordy’s awakening. The festival lasted quite a few weeks, and the awakening was pretty big news. Word would of had to have gotten to the Minister of Peace.
New Skill – “Terrified was Marjory”
Why don’t we just do what the seer’s did and seal up the magic. It worked fine until the humans and their “gods” came and screwed everything up with their greed. So once we seal the magic up, we should kill all the humans to make sure the magic stays sealed.
If the gods didn’t know about the dragons, I have to ask why did they think all the magic had been sealed to begin with.
There is a connection between the gods and the dragons. The connection is simple. After the five races make heavy sacrifices to seal up all magic so that the dragons will go into hibernation, the humans and their false “gods” come and release the magic so that the dragons eventually reawaken. Humans, are either dragon minions, or dumber than rocks.
Either way, all humans must die and the magic must be resealed. This silliness of going around and killing dragons will only result in failure.
If they are really greedy they will implement this fix after the halloween update, when the gemprices sink again.
Gem prices won’t sink for a while. LS2.5 starts Nov 4. New items will increase the demand for gems.
Guild Wars 2 is not that amazing
Stop praising .
I’ve been playing since the first Beta weekend, and I think GW2 is totally amazing and deserves praise.
It WAS amazing, but slowly over time it’s decayed. people give the devs far to much credit, seriously people look at the time from when the game launched to where it is now. i prefered the ORIGINAL gw2.
Nope, it’s still amazing.
To much pride to see how it’s declined.
Is it true that only your opinion is the correct one?
The horror doesn’t bother me. Small parties can take him. The lich however….

Welcome to capitalism and the gaming market!
95% of all MMO games are just clones of pen and paper D&D. Though I suppose if you’re young and have no concept of RPG history, it might seem pretty cool. If you don’t want people to complain, perhaps you should consider encouraging game makers to stop repeating 40 year old gaming tropes.
you must be kidding? D&D? If that (original) game would have to be pitched today, the presenter would be tossed out after 10 minutes. “Too complicated, people will not understand the system”, and they would probably be right. Even WotC themselves dumb down the game since 3.5 and in the process have turned it into a travesty of itself. I sure WISH game designers would be inspired by original D&D. As for tropes – the whole fantasy genre heavily draws on myth and fairy tales and usually adds some very mediocre writing and imagination to it (yeah, please don´t cite Tolkien, compare his works to real great writers, glorified anglo-saxon myth fan fiction at best). Don´t blame D&D for that either.
I can tell you’re not part of the original D&D crowd. All of the core concepts of RPG and MMO games like, Hit points, damage types, damage resistance, hit percentages, armor, weapon types, character classes, ALL OF IT, comes from original D&D. If it were too complicated and would be chucked out, then this game wouldn’t exist (srsly, how could you say that, in light of the game you’re playing?).
Bring on the day when game designers have a truly original idea.
Actually, it didn’t come from D & D. All those mechanics came from Chainmail. Someone that was actually part of the original D&D crowd would have known that.

Where did I say them trying to make money is a bad thing? I just say I don’t like the cash-shop approach because of some of the effects of what I just showed you one using purely facts.
I don’t say.. don’t make money, I say, make money in another way. But you know that as you end your post with that.
I am not sure what you mean with ‘just a cash-grab’ or where I did say that. They use the cash-shop to make money and it effects the game in a specific way. A way I consider bad and in fact a way many people seem to consider bad looking at the complains about the grind. What I just showed how at least partially that is factually linked to to cash-shop.
And there is a difference between using the cash-shop to earn your money and having a cash-shop.
The idea that making money with box-sales if over seems to be a little strange. It is still the most used way for most games. It’s just not done a lot in MMO’s but then again that has never been the case and there was a time (just a few years ago) nobody believed in F2P games (read.. cash-shops) while now that is the standard for MMO’s so who says box-sales won’t be the standard for mmo’s in the future?
The fact that the cash-shop way is the most popular at this moment does not stop me from going against it. If it’s bad, it’s bad and I will say it’s bad even if the whole world world would say it was good. I’m not somebody who just go’s with the flow of the masses. Anyway, luckily there are many people who dislike it. Many of them did come to GW2 because it was sold as B2P and had a good name for it’s B2P model with GW1.
GW2 would not have existed where it for GW1 using that model. It is what made them big.
None of which matters. I made a general post, not addressed to you specifically, and you responded. In that post and since, you have clearly failed to respond to most of the points I’ve made.
So, I’ll give it to you one more time — but don’t expect me to respond if you continue to talk about things other than what I posted.
Here it is, as simply as possible.
- Many items are available in GW2 via gold, either through the cash shop or the TP.
- The design intent behind this availability is clearly to make these items accessible to anyone who wants them.
- The design intent is clearly not to generate the maximum amount of sales — because there would clearly be more gem sales if players could not exchange gold for gems.
That’s it. As to your points, I know you’d rather they sold expansions and put everything that’s in the gem store into the game instead. That’s not relevant to the point you decided to argue in the first place.
incorrect, the ability to buy gems for gold, is profitable, it allows them to make money off someones desire for items, who would not pay real money. They sell the gold they get from that to a player who has no desire for anything else in the gemstore.
Not only that, but they take a cut of the profits. Essentially, any item that is bought for gems—>gold->gems costs more gems to create. If you cant follow this, just realize something simple. Every single gem (aside from promotional gems or achievement gems) is paid for whether it came from gold or gems, at some point anet got paid 1.25 cents for every gem.
Point is, yeah they make money off the gold to gem conversion. Otherwise they would have to come up with some other system for selling gold that takes out as much money as it puts in, which is probably not feasible.
The mistake in your math is that you forget that the gems that are obtain from gold are being recycled. They are not new gems.
People have opened 10k-27k trick or treat bags, and not gonna the rare drops.
What I’d really be interested in is the amount of bags opened total across all servers, and the amount of minis found total compared to that. Unfortunately, only ANet has those numbers, and I doubt they’d ever release them. It’s the only real indication if the chance works out the way ANet envisioned it, no amount of anecdotal evidence on the forums can come close to that.
I am certain it is a beautiful Normal Distribution curve! The problem with RNG is that:
1. Humans cannot tell if RNG is ‘tight’ or ‘loose’. Las Vegas has studied this and realized they could tighten up all the RNG slot machines because people could not tell the difference, so it was a bonus to the bottom line ot make them tighter, soince there was no down side repercussions. This was an ancillary discussion on this NPR show…[http://technation.podomatic.com/entry/2014-10-23T05_07_09-07_00]
2. RNG in MMO’s has become the de facto ‘reward’ system. Unfortunately, the only thing that is the reward in this system is the reinforcment of the brain’s dopamine based reward system.
Personally I see this as a problem of desire creation within a player base. Game devs want to create a strong desire in people to keep the player engaged enough to continue to buy their product. They can do this with either ‘good’ game design or ‘bad’ game design.
Good game design would be creating desire by adding new stories, content, game modes, strong characters, etc.
Bad game design is anything that is trying to utilize the more base motives of people. The easiest thing to program for is accessing the pathways of the brain that lead to addictive problems for those with a propensity to them, the brains natural reward pathway. Gambling type activities do this quite easily. The cycle of expectation, exhilaration, and payoff is quite compelling.
There are a lot of people that dispute these results. My boss is one of them. The problem with this study is that is only a simulation, real people aren’t involved. Another study was conducted by a different research team that shows that addicted gamblers (about 2% of all gamblers) can tell the difference.
It is gambling. Make no mistake about that. I’m just waiting to read the news here in a few weeks about a class action lawsuit hitting ANet over it, because i’m pretty sure its illegal somewhere, if there isn’t a “Better Business Bureau” somewhere that will raise a fuss over it.
I’m familiar with gambling rules around the world. GW2 doesn’t have anything that falls under any gaming regulation. It misses a key component. The missing component is that you receive neither money, nor anything that can be legally sold for money.
You don’t consider Hexed, Noble to be costumes?
If only there were a dedicated thread for this that the devs could respond to.

This actually can be true (sadly). ANET promised a lot of the listed things to the last year and didn’t happen.
Link or it never happened. Once again you are deliberately misrepresenting what A net said in an attempt to make them look bad. This forum is so embarrassing.
Here’s my question.
Why can’t they just like I dunno, talk with us before making decisions. I would have thought they would have learned by now that every time they make these design choices without consulting their player base something like this pops up. Generally when a person accidentally sticks their hand on a hot stove top they pull back before serious burns happen. Its like they stick their hands on the hot stove top, get burned, don’t learn anything, and then stick their hand on it again.
Have you read this forum? Did you read the post where the devs were called kitten? If this forum wants civil discussion, then it needs to be civil. Instead the people here immediately go into barbarian mode at the slightest hint of an infraction.
People are upset because they implemented first. The appropriate time to ask for community feedback on upcoming changes in generally before you roll it out to production. If you roll something out to production and then ask for feedback afterwards, that means the player base is stuck with whatever the bad decision is until it is patched.
Just because something can always be fixed later doesn’t mean you shouldn’t strive to get it right the first time, and in game development, that means at least having a bit of dialogue with your customer base. If they had come forward with a screenshot of the new system asking for any feedback or suggestions before roll out, I’m sure a ton of people would have commented about adding a custom amount feature.
And instead of blowing up, the entire thing would have been likely a complete and total non-issue.
I can’t hear you over the sound of overly rude, crude and totally unnecessary behavior in this forum. There is no excuse for some of the posts that were part of this thread.
It’s not just this thread. The horrible behavior on display during the last 24 hours is becoming more and more common here. Frankly it’s getting embarrassing.
It wouldn’t be so bad if anet didn’t kitten everything up everytime a patch comes out.
I disagree. It’s get bad in here because people have decided that they don’t need to be responsible for their poor behavior. Anet didn’t force anyone to behave as poorly as people have.
I have no doubt that this game will be around for much longer than a year.
Here’s my question.

Maybe Anet should hire a mathematician from a company that makes slot machines. They work with random numbers day in and day out.
Slot machines are designed to favor the house and to keep you playing. I rather them ignore any advice from gambling houses for a reward system. The current system is already on the edge of being too much a lottery for my taste (for certain things like fractals and precursors).
Right now the most rewarding content in the game is dungeons. Not only is there a good gold/time invested but there are also tokens that I’ve used to equip all of my alts. Even if I get bad drops (which I usually do) I feel rewarded for that content. Fractals is poor gold/time and when you’re lucky you’ll feel it is worth it, but most of the time it’s not. I stop playing them because after 10 runs without anything good being drop’d it’s not worth the time.
For fractals the solution is simple, x number of fractal tokens and you can exchange them for skins. For precursors I’m not sure.
I’d also like to see WvW tokens a.k.a. badges be useful for more than just siege.
RNG is find as a supplement, but it really isn’t an intensive unless the payout is high enough. If the payout was high enough in GW2 it would ruin the economy so really a progression system like PvP or token system would be my preference (with a very, very low chance RNG element in place).
The mathematicians that make slot games struggle every day with how to make RNG more appealing to people. They use RNG to distribute awards to players in ways that are enjoyable to players. you’re comment about slot machines favor the house has no bearing in this argument and I’m not sure why you brought it up. If Anet is having problems deciding what to do with outliers in their distribution patterns, mathematicians that have to answer this question daily may be the people to ask.
A well implemented RNG distribution system may help GW2.
Interesting fact, there are some video poker machines that pay out over 100%.
Maybe Anet should hire a mathematician from a company that makes slot machines. They work with random numbers day in and day out.
Every BL chest opened yields a reward.
Opening a BL chest has a 100% chance to provide a reward.
Every time one spends money to open a BL chest one is 100% guaranteed to receive a return for that expense.
As long as that fact remains true Anet is unlikely to run into significant problems.
That fact has nothing to do with opening BLC chests isn’t gambling. Even if half of the chests opened contained nothing, it still wouldn’t be gambling. Because in reality, there are no chests, and the chests contain no prizes. You cannot legally sell anything you get from a BLC,.
It would be obvious to people that BLCs are not gambling if you quit trying to redefine what gambling is. Why do you folks insists on redefining what gambling is when nations all over the world have gone through great pains to define it?
Yeah it’s gambling except it doesn’t come with monetary rewards… just virtual ones.
If there’s no monetary rewards, it’s not gambling.
I thought all the WoW players left with the last expansion. What are you hold outs waiting for?
Reminds me of an old article on massively.
It’s gambling… except it’s worse.
You know what would be weird? If you walked into a casino and none of the machines or tables told you the odds. Everything else would be the same: the payout, the mechanics, the money required to play, but no odds. Just give us your money and hope you win but never have a clue how great or small your chances are of actually winning.
If I was in Vegas I would never play at that casino. Yuck. I used to buy BL Chests when they were in the 25-35 gold range for 5 keys. They are too expensive now and there is no way I would buy gems to maybe get 10 luck and some boosters. If I want boosters I will just buy them. Likewise, if I want BL weapons, I will buy them with gold I earn in game. That’s a really good analogy in that article.
Unless you gambler in British Columbia or Singapore, no slot machine tells you the odds of winning. In BC, it only tells you the Return to Player. In Singapore, it only gives the odds of the top 5 paying combinations and the lowest 5 paying combinations.
I love these hollow debates about obvious topics that need no answer. Are BL boxes gambling? Yes, pretty much, regardless if you’ve spent real money or ingame money, both costed someone effort to get. OH EM GEE, it is illegal! If it was, Anet would not be doing it.
As I understand it the discussion is more: ‘since Black Lion Chests obviously are gambling why are they not affected by legislation that regulates gambling?’
Because black lion chests are not gambling.
Gambling is serious business , it could cause addiction, you could lose a fortune etc. It is illegal in many country for anyone who isn’t 18 year old yet. Now, the law’s definiton of gambling in my country is: Every game counts as gambling, where the player in exchange of money or any valuable possessions, under certain circumstances he has a chance to win money, or other valuable prizes. Winning or losing depends solely or predominantly on luck.
Now we all know in the black lion chests you could win items of different value, and with the gem/gold conversion we can even tell how much does an item worth in real money, also it depends purely on luck what you win. Also black lion keys main source is the gem store, you can buy them with gold , but you also can buy them with real money .
I’m not in law school, therefore I don’t really know what fall under the category of gambling and I hope someone here knows. But for me the keys feels like they are gambling and at least should be restricted to 18+.
I don’t know what country your in but I can tell you as a gambling professional that black lion chests fail the most basic test to be considered gambling. The reason that black lion chests are not gambling is because you cannot legally sell anything you get from a black lion chest for money. Because you cannot win money, it is not gambling.
If Anet don’t start releasing new content soon, there’s going to many people abandoning this sinking ship. It’s shame, GW1 had such a long run and people still play it, whereas GW2 is already dying after 2 years.
Guild Wars 1
Guild Wars: Prophecies – April 26, 2005 (6 classes, Tyria, 4 Elite Missions)
Guild Wars: Factions – April 28, 2006 (added 2 new classes, Cantha, skills, 2 Elite Missions)
Guild Wars: Nightfall – October 26, 2006 (added 2 new classes, Elona, skills, heroes, 1 Elite Mission)
Guild Wars: Eye of the North – August 28, 2007 (introduced Norns and Asurans, added new areas to Tyria, skills, new heroes, 18 dungeons)

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make here.
You’ve chosen a game that, by your reckoning, hasn’t been updated in 7 years yet is still being played. That means if Anet did nothing more with GW2 then it has at least another 5 years of life in it.
Unless you think that GW1 is dead. Then nothing can save GW2, if GW1 had all those updates in the first two years and died anyways.
Personally, I think there’s a lot of life left in GW2. But then I also think that on Nov. 4, we’ll find out that the new pact forward camp is located in a new zone.
Hypothetically, if she DID die, who would be the most likely next-in-line to rule? If there’s no definite answer, is there any likely candidate that we’d know about?
While the PC doesn’t know who is next in line, the Order of Whispers thinks they know who is.
Just because Mordremoth can corrupt sylvari, does not mean there’s a connection between them. It’s like saying there’s a connection between Kralkatorrik and charr, because charr can be corrupted.
If Kralky was the only dragon that could corrupt charr, you might have a point. However, because Mordy is the only dragon that can corrupt sylvari, your statement does not apply.
I’m thinking not until after the WvW tournament. This will give everyone an opportunity to participate.
Go team Canise!
More likely I think that the Pale Tree would deem Malyck returning home and spreading word of her existence to be too dangerous for her people and she gave Caithe some special orders to ensure it didn’t happen….
If you have played through Entangled, then you would know that killing Malyck would have served no purpose. Therefore, I doubt that the Pale Tree had him killed. Also, the summit confirms that Mordy knows exactly where the Pale Tree is located.
Actually, I think you should be comforted. These features generally are QoL changes. Anyone that uses the TP regularly knows that the TP could use some QoL love.
All “QoL” they announced recently was something along the line of
“to avoid too much confusion we remove … "so .. yeah .. i’m scared that the next QoL feature is.
“to avoid confusion we remove collection and trading .. " or at least
“to avoid confusion you can now only trade 1 item every 5 levels” .. or whatever else
because “avoiding confusion” seems to be the biggest QoL feature at the moment.
This is an outright lie. Please tell me what they’re removing from crafting.
No offense intended, but it looks like ANet has given you quite a few goals already.
Think of the living story as a comic book. Small chunks of story on a periodic basis. Currently its on hiatus for the feature pack and the WW tournament. Once the tournament is finished, the story will resume.
Do you sit and think about what things you can complain about today?
I’m sorry but the game has a what, 12 rating? If anet honestly thought that the trait and downed system etc. needed reworked because people didn’t understand it then they must think that their customers are complete morons and they (anet) are some superior race of intelligent beings.
Obviously you’ve never studied people playing your games. If you had, you would understand just how easily people get confused.
One thing that bothers people about level based drops is the scarcity of Silver dubloons.
Are you cute? If so, it shouldn’t be a problem getting help.
Actually, I think you should be comforted. These features generally are QoL changes. Anyone that uses the TP regularly knows that the TP could use some QoL love.
I don’t believe there is anything that could even slow the complaints.
Stop praising .
