Do traits matter much at this point or should I stick with what I have?

I’m new to this class and was wondering if lower level thieves are just fragile or if I’m doing something wrong. I’m level 22, using two daggers or and pistol+dagger with 10 points in critical strikes and and a couple in acrobatics.

Fighting one thing even 1 or 2 levels above just eats my health away, and I can forget about fighting two or more because it’s certain death if I’m unable to escape.

Anyway, I’m dying a lot and it’s getting frustrating. Just wondering if there’s anything I can do differently.

I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced this while trying to create a Sylvari, but the colors from the character selection screen don’t seem to translate well into the live game. I picked the charcoal color for my body markings, and a dark reddish color for my hair which looked fine during character creation. But when I actually got into the game, these features both appeared as a garish bright red.

Is this just the way it is, meaning I should avoid certain colors or is my character somehow glitched?

This thread is going a bit downhill and that is mostly my fault for making a very brief post in a moment of frustration.

I never felt “entitled” nor did I ever claim I was good at PvP. It’s just that I was expecting something different after talking with people about PvP in this game and after doing my own research. Now, it’s possible that I misunderstood or I talked with the wrong people, yes.

When I made the comparison to WoW PvP, it was in the sense that I didn’t think GW2 PvP would be as gear dependent. That’s it. I got a little gold and managed to upgrade everything to rare quality though I am new and don’t have much gold. I understand that the other sources of gear are karma purchases and crafting. My armorsmithing is 400 but I haven’t had much luck finding the ectoplasm globule things.

Again, I appreciate the advice and I realize that this game is a lot different than WoW and that it’ll take some getting used to.

I’m just a poor sport, I guess. I don’t like losing in the first place, and it makes it especially vexing when I join a game to try and learn but I can’t even react before I’m dead.

I tried the sPvP stuff, where you get the free PvP gear and free respecs and that wasn’t much better. Maybe this game isn’t for me, because I don’t like dying in under 5 seconds. What I hate worse is joining a game where people do nothing but stand around…had to join and leave 3 of them before I found one where people were actually doing something other than dancing on rooftops.

Well, I just got 80 yesterday and all my gear is green quality level 80 gear. I play a guardian and I am specced 20/30/0/0/20.

I was fighting one person for about 5 seconds , until a second person came in and finished me off and this didn’t matter because I was almost dead anyway. I don’t have any higher tier of gear (exotic, I think? Nor do I know where to get it), so I didn’t expect to dominate or be super powerful right off the bat, but I thought I would at least have a fighting chance.

I only compared it to WoW PvP in the sense that it seems to be very gear dependent.

And I didn’t have much fun. How gear dependent is the PvP in this game, because I literally just melted while doing barely any damage to the enemy. Very lame, because I expected something better than World of Warcraft PvP.

My Guardian is my first lvl 80 and I want to start getting into WvW and sPvP. Didn’t really do any of that while leveling since I chose to do PvE content like hearts/events/exploration.

So, I don’t have good gear. Just green quality lvl80 crafted armor and green quality weapons. I’m guessing I should try to go more support oriented until I get better stuff. Can someone suggest an effective build? The one I’m using now seems to work for PvE stuff, but I should probably change it for PvP.

Just wanted to drop in and thank you guys for the responses. After playing around with traits/weapons (and other professions), I’ve come to the determination that necromancers aren’t for me. When I play my Guardian, the traits and weapon skills just seem to fit so well, while on my necromancer stuff feels awkward. I just feel so much more active and effective on my Guardian and hope that feeling persists at 80.

Yup, and I’m very happy to hear that. I was worried that the intention for necromancers was for them to always use minions.

I’ll have to play around with daggers/axes again now that I have access to trait lines. Thanks for the tips and hopefully I’ll find something that works. Do you guys find yourselves swapping between weapon sets often? I know elementalists swap often. Does necromancer gameplay require this?

Also, at 80 is it possible to have a build that minimizes the use of minions but remains effective? I realize that they aren’t supposed to do everything, but I hate the fact that I have zero control over them. If they didn’t regularly do stupid stuff, I could live with them. But not with the way they are now.

So, my necromancer is level 30 and I’ve been trying to play him as a minion master. I have 10 points in spite and 10 in death magic, mainly use a staff, and have most of the summon skills on my bars.

I’m finding these pets to be rather frustrating and annoying, mainly because I have zero control over them. They’re squishy, and they seem to despawn randomly if I jump down a cliff or move too far away from them (sometimes they move slowly for some reason).

Is there a less pet-centric build I can use while I level, or is MM pretty much the way to go until 80?

I’m always disappointed when I come to the forums. I finally found a profession I like and everybody is just ragging on it and saying it sucks and it makes me think I picked poorly yet again. I’m not experienced enough with the game to parse out the legitimate complaints but as long as I can effectively solo PvE stuff and do PvP (haven’t even tried it yet but I want to get into it), I’m happy. Can I do that with an elementalist?

I hate melee classes, so warriors, guardians and thieves are out…

I’m not sure if this is the right place for this post, but a friend of mine is having an issue with the free trial. I sent her an activation key last night and she went ahead and downloaded the game. When she enters that key, the game says it is invalid. I’m wondering if I was too late in sending the invite because the number of keys was supposedly limited? Thanks.

I believe she is probably entering the code incorrectly. Have her try again, carefully viewing each number or letter, being sure to not add spaces, etc.

If she continues to have issues, please have her contact Support by filing a ticket through the “Ask a Question” tab on that linked page.

She submitted a support ticket and they said that the problem was occurring because she tried to log in before the trial period started. However, she just tried again and is still unable to log in.

My Mesmer is finally level 50, and while I’m having a lot of fun with this character, my damage seems low when compared to other professions in solo PvE. My survivability is great, so it’s not like I’m dying a lot. It just takes me a while to kill stuff.

I watch thieves and warriors engage something, and it just melts while at the same time, I have my mob down to 25-30%. Is it my build? I’m new to GW so maybe I’m misunderstanding something or messed something up? I recently swapped from scepter/pistol to sword/pistol and it helped a little, but not enough IMO. Here is my build:

Cool, thanks. Now, can I make this sigil as an artificer or buy it from a vendor? If it drops randomly, I’m sure I can find it at the trading post if that is the case.

This may be a dumb question, but…

I got my first yellow piece of gear the other night and it is setup like this:

(1): +10 X
(2): +1% Y
(3): +15 X
(4): A when B for x seconds

However, only the first bonus is active (blue lettering) while 2-4 are grayed out. How do I activate the other bonuses? Are 2-4 set bonuses? If so, how do I go about getting the other pieces of gear? This was a random drop from a mob. Or do I have to apply more sigils? The gloves have a major sigil of lyssa applied, so do I need to tack on more? Again, sorry if this is a dumb question. I’m new to GW, so I’m a bit confused over how certain things work.

I did this with scepter/pistol and staff. My utility stuff was mirror image, decoy, and blink and the first healing skill. I have tons of mobility and the ability to pump out illusions at a very fast pace with this setup and it really helped me avoid the normal thralls until they all went down and I could focus on the Veteran.

I agree with the above. When I encounter an event that has a lot of people participating, the most I can do is auto attack, cast confusion if I manage to target something at or near full health, and drop chaos storm. Summoning phantasms is pointless because they vanish when the thing you cast it on dies. I guess I can summon up illusions while sitting in melee and blow them up but I really don’t want to do that on a squishy ranged character,

This thread worries me because I really do enjoy the class (switched from thief because I found it boring), but I don’t want to be useless. If I have to put a lot of extra effort into the profession in order to make it work, I expect to be rewarded and not fall short of someone who pushes 3 buttons.
