However, events and killing enemies becomes more player friendly as it gets rid of camping. You aren’t racing with another player to get the first hit on an enemy, it allows everyone to participate and get a share of the prize. Compare that to WoW, where only the first person that hits a spawn gets a reward.

Not entirely accurate. While some may not be shared, most of mobs that matter ARE shared.

Your friends have terrible tastes in gaming.

Or… You know, they may be used to game with actual content…

This. WoW might not do the best story telling, but at least it has a coherent one. I got bombarded with story and lore all the way from level 1 to level 90. It was great.

Whereas GW2 just feels like a mishmash of unrelated elements. The Living Story doesn’t help, especially with the whole Scarlet thing currently going on. Mainly evoking feelings of isolation and “why the hell am I doing this?” 1-80 feels like a blur of unrelated mini events. What’s the overarching theme? Is there one?

Like, what’s Queendale’s theme? I know that you get to be the “Hero of Shaemoor” but what happens after that in the zone? You just run around doing chores and jump on the champ train when it toots on by.

Subscription fees are a scam. True story, I paid over $2000 playing WoW and at the end of the day I have nothing. I cannot login, I cannot view my characters – turns out I was only renting the game (very expensive rent to boot!).

I don’t regret paying for something I enjoy. I do regret buying GW2 because they deviated from their original plan though. I just find it funny how people demand the world here when all they’ve paid was the box price and a few dollars in the gem store.

I also find it funny when people come here with their opinion and think it is fact. Just from reading you post here I can see you are one of those people.

Also, I see you talk about regretting buying GW2, do you still play it? If not then why are you posting on here. That is another thing I see on these forums are ex-players that don’t play the game and don’t bring anything to the discussion other then their disdain for the game.

I am also like Jheryn, I won’t pay a sub again. There is too much free content out there to waste money on a game. I played Everquest and DAoC for years. By the time I stopped playing DAoC I had a family and my priorties had changed. That is when I found GW1 and now I won’t go back to playing a sub based game.

Also, to me, in my opinion, I don’t think ANET made that many changes that deviated from their plan. I find most of the content enjoyable, non-grindy, and fun to play. I think they have given us a good game, not great but good, and have a lot of room to grow with it. I have long term goals to work towards and content to enjoy now. So it is a matter of “OPINION” on whether or not they deviated from their original plans.

Because I spent hundreds of dollars here and I have a right to voice my thoughts. That’s why I still post. And I actually LIKED the game the first few months after release.

people will still play guild wars 2 due to no monthly subscription.

There is no value in free… otherwise everyone would be playing it, right? Or LoTRO, or SW:TOR, or… you get the idea. Free means nothing.

Players are willing to pay for a service they find value in… WoW continues to prove it to this day, and ESO and WildStar are creating packages for that value as well. Some people prefer the subscription because it lets the designers focus on game design instead of monetization.

If the only thing a game has going for it is “it’s free” then it’s already on the way to the grave.

Not saying that’s GW2, but, they really do have to announce something pretty major – an expansion, for example – to be seen as relevant in light of new competition.

Well, I will have to respectfully disagree with you on this one Zeldain. Most of my guild wanted to play ESO, but will not because of the subscription. I suspect many people play GW2 because of the F2P. I know I do.

Not saying that some will not migrate to other F2P games, but many, including myself, have a problem with subscriptions. For now, those people I play with love GW2 and plan on sticking with it no matter what.

What? You do realize that the sub fee is trivial so I don’t see why it would keep people from playing. And I don’t feel pressured to play to get my “money’s worth”. I mean, I have a Netflix subscription that I pay $8 a month for. Do I need to watch Netflix 24/7 to get my money’s worth? Of course not because part of that fee is having access whenever I want, to a bevy of content. Same with sub MMOs.

GW2 could never justify a sub fee because the permanent content just isn’t there.

It’s trivial if you only play one game. It gets expensive if you start juggling 3-5 MMOs at once.

That filters down to the design decisions made as well. Because of the above, the devs structure the game such that it’ll be your one MMO. You can’t pick up and just play them like you can GW2, you fall behind once you stop playing for a while.

If I quit GW2 for 6 months, I can come back and still do the new content. In P2P MMOs, I’ll come back and find out I need to grind through 6 months if gear/skill gates to do the newest content.

WRONG. WoW introduced a catch up mechanic for new and returning players. My character was ready for the newest content in about 3 days.

I’ll never play another subscription game again, because of the design decisions that make subscription games work are the very design decisions that make subscription game suck. Everything has to be slowed down. They want you in that game and they don’t want you to leave. Sub games all seem to have dailies. They also seem to have rep grind. They also seem to be focused on raids and dungeons which frankly are not why I play an MMO.

I think they need to make the LS if they continue with it like X-Files monster of the week episodes where even if you missed the story arc you’re not in the dark. The main story should never be a one time only deal. How many books have missing chapters for new readers on purpose?

At this point, I’m like half expecting a clone of Rita Repulsa to appear with all of the monster of the week stuff going on. Will Scarlet become another Rita LOL?

Filler content, eh? You mean like the poorly disguised kill this, gather that quests…oh excuse me, hearts? Of course, you can bypass all that by just paying money and leveling with crafting.

Hearts (and scouts) were added late into development because they found that players from traditional MMOs were too conditioned to figure out how to explore. Unlike the filler quests, hearts are not required to continue the main story.

That “We don’t want players to grind part” oh my, I cant stop laughing right now, hahaha….. that’s just sad :’(

The funny thing about the manifesto is, it’s still true today. All the complaints about it are when you take the points they made out of context. People would understand it better if they saw the actual full length interviews, rather than the point form notes of the manifesto.

The no grind statement is one of the most commonly misunderstood points and it is directly referencing other MMOs. He’s referring to having to grind filler content (aka kill 10 rats) to experience the actual fun content (aka main story quests) and then switches to talking about the grind of combat due to the usual style of sit there while you auto attack, whereas GW2 is action oriented. The same can technically happen in GW2, but you have to forcibly do it. Anyone that has ever played an MMO like WoW would probably understand.

The amount of new content since release that I have actually enjoyed has been close to zero.

Almost no substantive balance or diversity improvements have been made in a year, with the notable exception of WVW and art, the game could not have disappointed me any more than it already has.

No frills, regular cut pants. Can’t get those. Though you can get a bizarre ballroom gown/bikini top armor “set” if you so choose.

This is mostly a L2P issue. People cry about stealth/thieves/rogues/assassins in every MMO and the fact of the matter is ANet is not going to nerf thieves so you can win your 1v1 duels. Thieves prey on stragglers and the injured. That’s pretty much their thing so rather than crying about them, I suggest you learn how to counter them.

If you have a problem with it, roll with your zerg or small group.

Get in with TTS, they kill teq several times a day on multiple overflows. The only thing that really sucks about Teq is you have to show up early and wait for up to 1.5 hours sometimes cause there is no real timer for it. Sure the rewards have been increased to match and they aren’t as bad anymore, but waiting 1.5 hours in Sparkfly Fen can be pretty mind numbing. I can complete a 5 dungeon runs and couple world bosses or temples in that time for a lot more shiny.

I typically get a tell within 5 minutes and starting the dungeon within 20 min. I’ve done this on 3 or 4 characters.

Guess you haven’t played any of the other betas. The grass isn’t always greener. You think this forum is dark, you should see the stuff being said about ESO.

Guess neither did you.
From Wildstar beta i can definitely tell you, yes, the grass is greener, way greener.

Like I said, people said this about the GW 2 beta too. Believe me, a couple of months in, when the shine is off, the cracks start to show. If not, it’ll be the first MMO that hasn’t happened to.

Also to add that its a lot of personal opinion.

Apart from the sub fee and the trinity, I love everything about ESO. From the non-targeted combat, the freedom of choice for your character, and the way the world looks, it makes me want to look at my holiday planner for next year and take a few days off work.

And then I look at all of Wildstar’s gameplay videos, and the only impression I get is that its WoW in space, down to the horrid art design. The first question I then ask myself is, what makes this better than WoW? If I wanted to play a WoW-clone, I’d go for the original, with 10 years or however it is now more content, and a company which can buy up small countries financing it, as opposed to play a copy of WoW made by a developer I’ve never heard of.

At this point, WoW follows the GW2 “manifesto” more closely than GW2 itself with WoW’s current and upcoming changes.

I also pay $8 for a Netflix streaming subscription and I don’t feel the need to watch 24/7 to avoid feeling like I’m not getting the most out of my sub. I doubt many others do as well.

Basically the same as a game sub. I don’t buy this argument that there is a “barrier” to subs other than a financial one. And if you can’t spend $10-$15 on a sub, you need to do something else other than gaming with your free time.

The amount of “you” in there makes me feel like you’re making a personal attack. In my case it’s not a financial issue, my yearly expense is 1/3rd of my income, Australian .Net developers are often being paid in the 80k – 130k range, on track to retire at age 45

I find subs to be a barrier, when I’m subbed to a game and I’m out doing something in my free time, I feel like the sub is a waste of my money so I ultimately end up spending all my free time with whatever I’m subbed to. Which is one reason I like how some sub MMO’s are handled in some some asian countries, you sub based on time (say 100hrs) which you can use over months if you don’t log in much. For me, personally and how I react to them, it’s not healthy so I avoid them (and with the vast majority of mmo’s these days going f2p after a year…it’s generally not an issue to wait a year)

That was more of a “general” you, not you specifically.

We’ll have to agree to disagree I guess. I pay a monthly access fee for several services: cable TV, internet, Netflix, etc. and I don’t feel like I’m “wasting” my money if I’m not using those services 24/7. Same goes for gaming.

And you know what? If they want to keep getting my subscription fees it’s in their best interests to keep my happy. Whereas GW2? They already got your box fee. And if you don’t use their RNG gemshop what right do you even have to complain? You’re playing their game for free.

Dark Catalyst.1028

We will have to wait and see.

GW2 has the advantage over its competitors in that nobody really “quits” the game since it doesn’t have a monthly subscription.

If I was ANet I would try and schedule a “Classes 2.0” patch roughly 1 months after TESO’s launch. That’s when the initial months ends and people have to decide if they wish to subscribe.

If ANet pushes a patch then with revised class mechanics, new abilities and a trait overhaul I imagine that would help retain a lot of players.

But again, the “no subscription” is GW2’s strongest suit.

I too have a hard time accepting the standard subscription model after playing GW2 for a year.

Really? Subscriptions are typically in the range of $10-$15 a month. A trivial amount.

Just cut out Starbucks for a day or two.

Logically you are correct but psychologically for many people subscription is a barrier that makes them feel like they are wasting their money/not making the most of their money if they aren’t playing 24/7.

Personally I’d probably be back at DCUO ( I spent more in their cash shop than gw2) if not for the fact to access my in game currency above 2.5k I have to sub (a lot of the newer items from npcs cost more than 2.5k) which makes progressing in the game and accessing the newer DLC content (raids) essentially impossible within a reasonable time frame.

I also pay $8 for a Netflix streaming subscription and I don’t feel the need to watch 24/7 to avoid feeling like I’m not getting the most out of my sub. I doubt many others do as well.

I spend $10/mo on the gem store because I want to, but I like being able to NOT buy gems if I don’t feel like it or take a break from the game or there’s just nothing I actually wish to purchase with them. They get paid if they make a thing I want to spend money on – not just arbitrarily. As the person spending the money I’m pretty cool with this.

I don’t see myself playing a subscription-based game unless it’s the most amazing game I’ve ever played. There are so many other options I don’t want to tie myself to what feels like an obligation and outdated system if it’s not absolutely amazing.

I spend $15 a month and I get actual content. Actual dungeons/raids to run, actual attempts at class balancing and a halfway decent story. Not living story garbage that persists for 2 weeks and then goes away forever. I can go back and play content at any time I wish because it’ll never go away.

That’s basically the people who defend grind in Guild Wars 2.

“Ordinary MMOs … You have fun tasks that you occasionally get to do, and the rest of the game is this boring grind to get to the fun stuff … We don’t want that in Guild Wars 2.”

Yeah, lol. You don’t have to play at 1080p. Only if you want to because you can access all the games at. 720p!!!!!!!! 1080p barely makes a difference, lol!!!!!!!!!!!

Why are people still crying about this? Only the horrendous players who think that a tiny bit more damage will let them win a fight are the ones who can’t sleep because of ascended gear.

In WvW for instance, if you can’t beat an equally skilled player while you’re wearing all rares or even masterwork, you won’t be able to beat them with ascended gear. It doesn’t make a big difference at all. Builds, foods, and player skill make a much bigger difference.

Here’s an example. If I craft TWO ascended weapons for my warrior. I will gain the following over exotic:

8 power
.3% crit chance
0% crit damage

If you think that’ll make a difference in anything then you’re silly. People are also silly for spending hundreds of gold on making ascended weapons but that’s just my opinion.

Oh really? If the supposed gains are so infitesmilly small, that why spend 100s of gold and ridiculous amounts of time grinding for mats? What does it matter if ascended is removed?

Lets be fair here here. This is Guild wars 2. They had a locked in audience. That audience in large part pre-purchased the game in good faith. They promised one thing in the manifesto and delivered quite another by 2 months in.

I have nothing against WoW. (I’ve never played it actually.)I have seen a significant minority requesting a WoW like experience. (mounts, raids, vertical progression, etc) If they would have told me they were going in that direction at pre purchase, i would have never bought the game.

You’ve never played WoW so you may not be aware. What a small minority is requesting is more akin to old style WoW and they’re asking for it here because Blizzard decided to move away from that for good reason. Currently, and in the upcoming expansion, Blizzard is starting to incorporate many of the good things that ANet backtracked on.

What keeps you playing LS's releases?

Nothing, because I refuse to participate in their elaborate psychological games. LS is designed to give you feelings of anxiety if you don’t login and run their treadmill of shallow content, disappointing rewards, and grindy, excessive achievements. Mostly by way of “available for a limited time only!” and one shot at “achievement points!”

Can't play any other mmo because...

Why are people complaining about sub fees? They are typically trivial amounts per month. Like, eat at McDonald’s one time less per month and there you go.

When can we expect raiding

There is a reason I don’t play WoW. I play games, I don’t need another career. Raids take too long to organize, you can’t get up and get the phone. I have problems with dungeons as it is. Having said that, as long as they give players another way to get what would be a reward for said raid, I’d live alongside it (like ascended trinkets). But if they turn the quest for nice things into WoW, I’ll be leaving.

Actually, it’s pretty easy to get a group for Flex raids if you use the Open Raid website. I believe GW2 had a similar website before the LFG tool was introduced. Please stop misrepresenting things.

You get what you pay for.

I pay a trivial fee per month for another game and I’m guaranteed to receive decent content that isn’t rife with bugs upon patch release. The few bugs that do slip through are caught within the first 24 hours.

What game is that? Every MMO that I have played had bugs in their content updates, and none of them fixed all of the bugs found in 24 hours. In my experience, GW2 has been no different than any other MMO when it comes to fixing bugs, including the MMOs with a subscription fee.

I find that my posts are getting pulled whenever I mention that other game, but given the way things are now, the quality of that other game merits a sub fee while GW2 does not.

Not with the shallow content and the bugs present from release.

Even if there were a single MMO that released great content often with no bugs or bugs that were fixed in 24 hours (and I’ve never seen it), it’s certainly the exception to the rule. There are dozens of MMOs out, and I’ve played at least that many. Age of Conan, for example, was so bugged it was unplayable on my machine. Other people had the same problem I did. Lotro and DDO had tons of bugs. SWToR…I don’t even think I need to go there.

And I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that the game you’re talking about has plenty of reported bugs and that if I googled those bugs, I’d find the list.

Whatever. Let them pull this post if they want but, I’m talking about WoW and I don’t remember encountering any problems/bugs the last few patches. The only annoyance was updating my addons.

Whereas here, people are saying they are encountering persistent bugginess from release, disconnects, skill lag, etc.

Crafting to 80 is out of hand.

Leveling is so easy. It takes ~40 hours to level to 80. I just can’t see that as worth complaining about.

Craft, explore, dungeon runs, experience scrolls, etc. No one is forcing you to level by crafting if you don’t want to.

I’ve played through and completed every zone. Why should I have to do that more than once?

What is there to learn? Combat is incredibly shallow and you only get to use a small handful of skills at any one time. Question about traits? Pop open one of the many guides floating around and you’ll be on your way in 5 minutes.

I leveled through each area of the game once. I don’t need to do it again.
