Try Rift. I downloaded it about a week ago and have been enjoying it very much. There is literally at least 50x more to do in Rift than in GW2…. I’ve been doing PvP and getting rewards for PvE, I’ve been exploring the world while questing, and I’ve been enjoying the guild features that GW2 should’ve had at the beginning of its existence.

Yes some of these people have played this game probably over 3k hours and are bored, but you have played rift week and you still have lot’s of thing to do there.

That may be true, but I can tell you that once I hit level 60, I’ll be playing Rift for 1 to 2 years…. that’s how much there is to do.

Played the game when it was released, and was bored after 3-4 months since even if it was fun in the beginning, in the end it was just again another Raid-Grinder, and if you don’t like Raids there was not much more to do that daily faction grind and of course there was no chance to get better stuff.

Rift is like WoW or FF14. ITs a good ‘classic’ MMO. Meaning that if you dont enjoy grinding to get into ‘leet’ content, you won’t like it much.

But the grind does feel like it pays off in those games though….

Except that after a day or two at max level you can get into the latest raid and see all the content.

Anyone else simply bored?

Female vs. Male Characters

I play a male sylvari and am quite happy with the amount of customization possible.

As for the people saying they would rather look at a “hot female”…you do realize that it’s a female rendered in cartoonish graphics. Nothing “hot” about those pixels. But regardless, it’s okay to admit that you’d like to play as something than an avatar of yourself in a video game. It’s a great change of pace and I always like to play females of “uglier” races (goblins and orcs in other games) for the uniqueness factor. You don’t have to preface your choice with: “Well I’d rather look at a hot chick than some duuude.”

Just own your preferences.

The hater of vertical progression killed this game. Those babies never played an MMO.

I hope other designers learned the lesson. Vertical progession is NEEDED to keep a mmo alive.

Since VP was added to the game, I’ll guess it was not “enough” to satisfy this poster and those like him. It’s ironic that players are leaving because of lack of VP while other players are simultaneously leaving because of the addition of VP. This is what happens when developers go for compromise solutions that cater to everyone — they end up displeasing players on both sides of the issue.

Very much this. I’m not sure what Anet can do.

Last night, we got a new guild member, who said to me there was no reason to go for a legendary because the stats weren’t higher. In fact, without higher stats, for this new guy, there’s no reason to get any other weapon and without that driving force, there’s no reason to play the game. He took a year break because there was no gear to work for.

This is why I say WoW’s success killed this industry. Sure they got 12.4 million players at their height, but that’s a relatively small percentage of gamers over all. And not all the people who play, play to grind gear. Many, in fact, don’t raid at all. That’s why raids in WoW kept getting easier and more available and finally, the looking for raid tool did away with the challenge in the game altogether. It was this reason that this new guildie said he left WoW.

I feel sort of like people who come from other games need to re-educated, but unfortunately, there seem to be more of them than there are of me.

The people who are casual can use the raid tool and at the very least see all the content and the people who want a challenge can run the higher raid difficulties. Plenty of people do this and multiple tools exist to help you get a group together for these higher difficulties. I don’t see the problem with this.

With the introduction of ascended gear, the fact of the matter is, that gear is now relevant. Yeah, you don’t HAVE to grind ascended but if I’m going to do something like WvW or even PvE, I want to bring my best. Sure, it would be nice if exotic was the top tier. But if I’m going to have to work for gear, then I’d rather do it WoW style over GW2 style which consists of gathering, running champ/event trains repeatedly and sitting at a crafting station.

Yeah, I have to run the same raid or two multiple times, but it’s actual, challenging content and my class is deep enough that I can always work at getting better.

Do people actually find grinding out ascended gear fun? The 100s of gold spent PER profession, the time gating, the champ/event trains for ascended mats, the tons of lower tier mats required…THIS is fun? THIS actually makes people happy and want to keep playing the game?

No, it isnt fun. But that is why this time around, Im going to just acquire ascended gear if I can when I can. Im going to try to simply enjoy the game, rather than creating things to do for myself.

If that is at all possible.

All this grinding really is a result of playing the game in a way it was never designed to be played. You were supposed to just get Ascended weapons when you do, it was never needed for anything in the game (not gonna go into that discussion again), it was just there as a way to reward doing certain content in the game and to make you feel like you’re progressing.

It’s like getting a new PS2 game as a kid, you don’t need it but it’s nice to have it and play it.

If you don’t want to be at a disadvantage in WvW or a burden in PvE, then yes, you do need it.

There’s nothing that needs Ascended stuff in PvE and it actually makes very little difference in if your party beats the content or not. No matter how much you ‘Ascend’ yourself, you’re still dead weight in Arah if you can’t dodge.

WvW is so chaotic that having ascended weapons makes very little difference. When was the last time you had a ‘fair’ fight? It’s always one side having more players or getting ambushed by a thief. Or if you’re in a server like UW, your Ascended weapons will look real pretty on the bottom of the silver league barrel.

If it makes very little difference then why bother? Are people doing it for the ugly skins?

I left because of ascended gear and ascended crafting. I might have stuck around if they introduced ascended drops (that are useful) through actual content but they went the easy route. In WoW, I can get a full set of decent PvP gear in about a week. How many months will it take new players to gear full ascended for WvW?

GW2 players can leave and come back any time and do so constantly without being “left behind” on the gear treadmill.

This is a 100% false statement. If you left when ascended gear came out and recently came back there is nothing to catch you up to Ascended gear that has been ground out by other players. You get to start in and try to catch up which is good luck. Other games like WoW if I start playing now I can start getting the base tier of this seasons gear in an hour or two. WoW has what you just said. Not GW2.

Difference is that WoWs gear is absolutely required to complete all content they have, Guild Wars 2, ascended gear is not required, exotics not even required, and the one place that you need ascended gear for Agony Resistance, you’ll get it anyways while doing the Fractals without having to repeat the same level over and over again to get that required AR to move on to the next level.

So no, you are not left behind if you do not play for 6 months or even a year.
In WoW you still have to keep up with the gear treadmill if you do not want to be left behind, if you want to do all the content that will be released, with Guild Wars 2, you can stay in Rares if you want and will never be undergeared to complete the content.

Wrong. WoW introduced several ways to catch up in addition to introducing yet another raiding difficulty (increasing that number to four). If you want to see end game raiding content, you can very easily do so and you can complete it at a level you can handle. I’d rather run, you know actual content for my gear instead of running brainless champ trains and Orr events and battling time gating at the crafting station.

Hmm, really? When did they get rid of gear checks in all difficulties? When did they make it so that you do not need certain gear to complete higher difficulty? And if they didn’t get rid of needing certain gear to complete it, did they make it so that you only have to complete a raid 1 time and get all the gear you needed in order to progress on to the next raid above it? Can you complete all difficulty using the same gear, or do you need better gear in order to complete it? Unless they actually did make those kind of changes, I am far from being wrong.

There are gear checks but most of them are easy to meet. You can get into the lowest difficulty within a day or two of getting max level. But it also depends upon your goals, like if you play casually and just want to see content then you can very, very easily do so. If you want access to the higher difficulties, it will take a little longer than a day or two but you can use the gear you get from the lowest difficulty to help you along the way. It’ll probably take 2-3 weeks. For PvP, you can get geared in a week.

Unlike here, where it takes around 2 weeks to make ONE piece of ascended. Like I said, I would rather run actual content for gear over spending a boat load of money to level one crafting skill to 500, running the same champ trains and orr events over and over and OVER for mats, and finally sitting at a crafting station for two weeks in order to obtain 1 piece of gear with the ugliest skin ever.

I have never played WoW, so I don’t know what I’m talking about, but that has never stopped me before.

I would much rather have required gear that is easy to obtain that not-required but better stat gear that is a pain in the kitten to obtain.

I’m just inferring here, but you sound (as am i) to be one of those players who just want BiS gear just because you want the best.

The question is, what’s after getting it? During the process you had something to progress towards, and there’s nothing you can’t do without BiS gear in the game. So is there really a point to getting it ASAP?

Probably because he doesn’t want to be at a disadvantage in WvW or PvE. Neither do I.
But I’m not going to do the incredibly grindy mat gathering and time gated crafting, so I spend my time elsewhere.

Don’t worry, because eisberg doesn’t know what he’s talk about either when it comes to WoW.

In WoW, if your goal is to just see the content, it is quite easy to get enough gear to do so. And you get that gear through doing actual, interesting stuff.

Guess who will be paying 15$ per month for a year without getting any content and then have to pay 60$ for an expansion.

I pay $15 a month and I get actual, interesting content that doesn’t involve grinding 100k candy corn or running mindless champ trains for hours on end. I actually spent MORE on GW2 in a year than one year of subscription fees would’ve cost me and it wasn’t worth it at all. Still boring as hell, now, with vertical progression.

I say this to everyone with DC’s perception…

If you hate it so badly, I am sure there are games out there with exactly what you’re looking for. There truly is no need to continue playing something you see as being “boring as hell.”

Good luck to you…

Actually, I don’t play any longer but I purchased this game so I currently have the ability to post on these forums. When I first purchased this game I was excited about it, but me and a lot of other people hate what it’s become. Nowadays I mainly hang around to see what’s changed.

“wash/repeat item-collection or kill-mob quests or dailies with flavor text support, the best stat gear requiring crazy amounts of time to earn.”_ Between the Living Story and the time-gating of things like ascended weapons, we’re pretty much exactly where we would have been with a subscription fee.

Exactly, but MINUS the epic, competitive PvE multiplayer content offered by games with subscription fees, i.e. raids. Instead, we have soloable-on-the-first-try (90% of the time) fluff “content” that is nothing more than a tedious to-do list so you can get that limited time only reward.

You see, one thing I’ve noticed over and over again is that people who have never played a game like WoW draw a lot of conclusions about what raiding really is, and completely miss the mark again and again. Usually people say “one raid per six months, or content every two weeks… I rest my case” or something to that effect. The problem is that they assume the quality of the content is equal. It’s not. GW2 living story content is some of the worst quality, mundane, boring, grindy, bug-riddled content I’ve ever seen in an MMO. Raiding content done right trumps any other type of gaming I’ve ever played.

Exactly this. Many people who mock WoW on these forums, have either never played, or played like 6 years ago when it was much worse than it is today. Frankly, I’d rather pay a sub and get guaranteed quality content that will last me for several months AND that I could fully experience on a lower difficulty level if I can’t find a group to complete it at my preferred difficulty level.

Dark Catalyst.1028

Well wait: I didn’t mean hardcore <-> casual in a means of “playing a lot”. But I’m going to have to say that people with skill (<-> without skill) won’t have a problem with mindless zerging. I’m aware that a lot of “hardcore” both as “casual” players are zerging and doing other mindless activities…

The distinction I tried to make was maybe one more between players dedicated to ‘organised forms of the game that require you to use your mind’ (in that way more hardcore) and players who do not do this (more casual, more ‘newb level’, easymode, facerolling the keyboard).

I have a great respect for people in PvE who are running arah and high level fractals, because those people are actually doing something that requires some skill and team work. Similarly small scale WvW players need to have some degree of skill.
I would call those hardcore, opposite to the champion zergs (in PvE) and the blobs (in WvW), those last are casual.

Point being: those last, ruin the game for the more serious people, by farming gold and ‘showing’ how good they are by running around with prestige items like legendaries. It saddens me to see that.

Everyone plays differently. I think we really need to stop labeling groups and trying to classify people one way or another. People end up getting offended and generalities really aren’t that helpful. Not to mention, everyone sort of interprets what one means by a certain label a little bit differently.

Anyway, let people play they way they want to play. If they want to zerg in wvw, let them. Conversely if they want to play the roamer and hassle the enemy lines from the flanks, let them do that too. Then, somewhere in the middle, there is the person that does ‘more serious’ content more often than not, such as small group tactical warfare, but still enjoys taking a break and running the hamster wheel on occasion too. Running in the zerg or not in the zerg does not necessarily define ‘hardcore’ or ‘casual.’ neither does it define whether the player is skilled or unskilled. All it says is at that moment they are enjoying what they chose to do.

For some people, farming is their enjoyment, and there isn’t anything wrong with that. For other people, they enjoy playing that seriously annoying perma-stealth thief that pops up and ganks you in wvw. I don’t like the thief. To me, he ruins my enjoyment and my game play, should I have his play style removed simply because it doesn’t mesh with my wants? No, that wouldn’t be right or fair. Let bygones be bygones. You don’t have to play with them unless you choose to. There are plenty of other options out there for things to do.

The problem is that the farmers, grinders, vertical progressionists and mindless little zerglings are changing this game for the worse. They’re changing it to what it was never supposed to be.

I don’t get why they would come here and whine that the game doesn’t have those things when there are plenty of other games out there that would cater specifically to them.

Keep going. Keep going. We want a game that is fun, not “grind x”, “farm y”, “zerg z”

Except that’s what people have been asking for…. so apparently that is what they want. Maaaaybe not you or me specifically, but obviously we aren’t loud enough to offset those crying for those things.

We actually got a game that applies to both our groups but you have to be willing to choose what you love playing rather then whats more profitable.

Quoted for truth. People who must play the most efficient way are gimping their own enjoyment. Play the most fun way, and don’t worry about rewards.

Playing the most fun way does sadly also mean you miss out on some content.

Like what exactly? Cause I do think I play the fun way and I dont think I missed any content since launch!

Not everyone enjoys zerging. Things I like are jumping puzzles and WvW small scale. Those are also the least rewarding parts of the game, which makes me lose out on a number of things (I could probs note others but those are the worst):

Roleplaying a zergling is the most rewarding part of the game. Do that or deal with getting what you need several times slower than the zerglings.

Thank you, OP.

And inb4 the “10.3% (higher with ascended armor!) doesn’t matter” people.

Oh, and thanks for the gear treadmill, Anet!

The other thread in the General forums should be merged here, and then closed. Ascended gear doesn’t give any guaranteed success in WvW.

That is not the argument.

I don’t actually agree with removing ascended gear from WvW what I do think happen is that it should be more easily available as anet said BiS gear would be.

Well, part of the argument is 1) complainers can’t afford Ascended, and 2) Ascended gives an unfair advantage.

The first point can be easily fixed by the players themselves. The second point is already proven to be false, as there’s a tiny advantage, but not unfair. I would say that being outnumbered is a far greater and unfair advantage in WvW.

I see we made progress from “it doesn’t make a difference” to “tiny advantage.” Good, good. Though still inaccurate because it doesn’t include the impact of ascended armor.

The people who were spouting that it “doesn’t make a difference” while also stating that they spent a boatload of gold, leveled crafting to 500 and spent weeks crafting ascended weapons (they don’t make a difference, remember?!) were beginning to luck foolish!

But the benefits are still there, whether or not they make a difference to the match.

Wow, that’s rich. If there’s a benefit, they make a difference. If they don’t make a difference, there’s no benefit. This is not opinion, this is fact.

It’s the principle of taking away rewards that people earned because you don’t feel like you should have to earn them.

That’s 100% the wrong principle to be promoting in PvP. The correct principle is that people shouldn’t have some arbitrary advantage because they had the time and the patience to do some arbitrary and completely unrelated task.

Mind boggling, eh?

Sure, being an active member of the United States Military currently stationed in Korea I have a bit of time on my hands. But my life isn’t lacking and I don’t need any video game to get a sense of achievement in my life.

Video games are a hobby. And in any hobby your gonna need to put some effort into it. When I learned to play the guitar i didn’t do it over night, I had to practice and stick with it. Anyone who has put together a model car will tell you that its not as easy as it looks the first time you do it.

The point is that any hobby is going to require a little investment. And for the OP to fly off and demand things that effect the time I spent on this game irritates me. I am not the one standing around telling him that he or she needs to play a certain way and only that way. He can do as he pleases, and so will I.

I prefer to put my effort into becoming a player of higher skill and helping the party / team / guild / server / whatever.

The attitude that I put a lot of time and grind into something, so others should have to as well is also interesting. I rushed my exotic sets when those were still somewhat expensive by flipping stuff on the TP, and wished that waste of time on no one. It was great that they added into cheaper exo weapons in later with badges, and at least one option for ascended trinkets with no FotM, even though those are still too grindy.

This game is no WoW or Korean ultra-grinder, so I have no idea why the devs keep sprinkling in some aspects of those types of games. The original premise of PvP in GW was a no a grind, no power creep, competitive MMO. Every single format from the Guild vs. Guild tournies, to Jade Quarry (the format) shrine bombing was playable in that fashion. Obviously sPvP is still carries the torch in that aspect, but for those of us who really enjoy the format of WvW and want to play it like a competitive game, it’s been extremely frustrating. There is no other active game with a format like WvW…

Honestly, even WoW isn’t that bad these days. They make it very easy to catch up to current content. True, you do have to do a few grindy things but I have way more fun doing them than running champ trains and monitoring websites for Orr events/spawns.

Because they were trivial to get, it allowed people to have several different sets which allowed them to experiment with a variety of builds. Ascended is a gigantic limitation and a detriment in an already fairly shallow game.

I don’t see how you require BiS gear to experiment with a build when exotics will give you a pretty good barometer of how the build will perform.

It’s not like exotics are less indicative of effectiveness.

What if I want to play more than one build at the highest level?

Stop thinking of yourself and think of other people. Your play style is not the only one that exists.

Pot meet kettle.

Suddenflame isn’t advocating taking away benefits that players worked for because he doesn’t want to work for it.

What benefits? You’re constantly claiming ascended makes no overall difference in a WvW experience.

No, because the intent was that max stats would be easily obtainable so we could actually enjoy the game rather than grind. That was the case with exotics because they were trivial to get. Because they were trivial to get, it allowed people to have several different sets which allowed them to experiment with a variety of builds. Ascended is a gigantic limitation and a detriment in an already fairly shallow game.

Just stop it and admit that you’re willing to grind until your eyes bleed for a full ascended set because you want that advantage over others. You want to smoke them and you’ve no interest in “skill” or a more level playing field.

You are still thinking of your play style. There is still some players who havn’t even gained their first set of exotics. They would say exotics are hard to get (I know a few). This fact alone defeats your argument. Ascended can be gained even by casual players using laurels, exotics can not. Your trying to defend exotics which is then hurting your argument for ascended based on logic.

You gained exotics and use them in WvW to “smoke” other players or a more level playing field. You do realize based on how this type of argument works I can easily switch out any gear into its place and show you how your argument sounds to Ascended people.

They aren’t hard to get for anybody. Don’t even try to compare exotics to the process that is ascended gearing.

When I hit 80, I dropped $10 (combined with the money I earned just from leveling ) and had two sets, plus runes/orbs/sigils, (crafted/purchased).

A step below that would be simply mailing gear to new 80s.

And like I said before, I wouldn’t care if they capped gear at a level below exotics. It doesn’t matter to me.

I left WoW for GW2 and went right back. I suggest you do the same.

I haven an easier time playing what I want in WoW with WAY LESS grind.

Wow. You’re pretty delusional if you think WoW has less grind than Gw2.

Especially during the early patches of the current Xpac.

Go back to your crafting station or your champ trains. Thanks.
