Funeral (spoilers)

in Personal Story

Dark Saviour.9410

ArenaNet has done that part perfect…

I… disagree…
Vehemently.

The whole thing felt contrived and more akin to Seiran just going “OK, Story’s headed towards a new chapter. Gotta die now.” Especially because her sacrifice just seemed so… pointless…

I didn’t feel sad there. Just… unimpressed. The most you could say is that I was kind of surprised since I couldn’t imagine the story had seriously just killed off the only interesting character it had created. And I don’t mean that in the, “Wow! So shocking!” kind of way. Just the, “Seriously? You really thought that was a good idea? Wow…… :-/” kind of way

Of course, my character’s near-complete lack of emotion and personality didn’t help. It was just… “Well, that’s that then. Moving on!” And it really didn’t have any impact in general, honestly. Gixx seemed slightly mournful for about 2 seconds and then we started a (rather horrible) mission where he was basically cracking ‘jokes’ and had seemingly put the whole thing out of his mind.

Then there’s basically nothing until the last mission where:
The Eye of Zhaitan tells you that your mentor is 'waiting for you beneath Zhaitan's wings'.
This… seemed rather… off… to me.
My mentor was Seiran... A Sylvari... Who are known to be incapable of being corrupted/turned by the dragons....

I know that was sort of a mindgame kind of thing, but it seems like a completely ineffectual one given that the above seems to be fairly common-knowledge.

That said, I would appreciate anything that could be added to actually show some degree of thought was paid to the mentor after the whole Claw Island thing. Anything to alleviate the abbreviated and disjointed feeling the story has would honestly be a great improvement. That said, I can’t imagine a funeral actually being all that touching given my character’s apparent inability to genuinely seem to care about anything. And Trahearne is even worse…

Rainbow Pony Bow and Flower-power Bow are the only ones worth it, TBQH. >_>

Seriously though, trying to go with a stereotypical sort of ‘epic’ for everything, you’d almost certainly end up with something equally over-the-top (just in the opposite manner), or something mundane and uninteresting compared to the ‘lesser’ weapons.

Seems to me like they’ve managed to find a point where it’s fun, but not so ridiculous that it’s “just plain stupid”.

Underwater Combat: The issues I have with it

Dark Saviour.9410

I’d argue that your statement proves it’s a matter of skilled versus not. I wouldn’t necessarily word it that way.. I’d prefer to say an understanding and familiarity with the tools you have underwater, and a willingness to use them.

As a ranger I can simply annihilate normal mobs in a handful of seconds and rarely take any hits, even on harder fights that go on for an extended period. The tools are there, but if people are just randomly mashing buttons they shouldn’t expect miracles. Performing well underwater does require at least a little attention. I can kill a pack of mobs in seconds or I can make the same fight last ten times as long and be infinitely more painful just by being sloppy.

Many people do the latter all the time and then chalk it up to underwater combat being horrible.

No. It’s a matter of playstyle preference. Same as I loathe playing melee or casters, regardless of how effective I may be with them, I dislike the options I’m given underwater. Save for a couple of parts in Orr, fighting underwater is not particularly difficult; it’s just not fun.

As for the “annhilate mobs in seconds” bit, I typically can too, provided Feeding Frenzy or my pet’s F2 ability is off of cooldown, The rest of the harpoon gun abilities do a pittance of damage, with the 1 ability’s focus on splintered bleeds being the biggest offender. Even if I were to completely change my gear to spec for conditions, I can’t imagine killing even remotely as efficiently as I could on land if you took my 3 ability away. Even if I could though, the skills and the weapon are boring, and I’d still stay out of the water whenever possible.

We don't like Trahearne *Spoiler Warning* [merged]

in Personal Story

Posted by: Dark Saviour.9410

Dark Saviour.9410

I’ve got a lot of grievances with the Personal Story (and with some of the world-building aspects in general), but I’ve got to say, aside from continuity problems and the disjointed nature of chapters in general, one thing I think is a major issue is that everything ends up exactly the same for everyone.

When the orders were first announced, I loved the idea that, as stated, they each had a different approach to fighting the dragons (“Vigil smash”, OoW wanting to put them back to sleep, the Priory searching for historical references and relics, etc.), and I feel that if this was embraced ’til the end, we could have alleviated a lot of the problems we had here.

Allow Trahearne to be Marshall, but instead of just leaving us as a generic ‘Commander of the Pact’ regardless of our prior choices, give us a partner based on our order, and have our path to take down Zhaitan be dependent on that. Have Trahearne just give us general authority as needed, but otherwise take a back seat. The story could then have 3 (or more, depending on the degree you’d like to implement prior choices into this) distinct endings that all have the same result; Zhaitan is dead. Or if you really must have everything converge into the same “plan” in the end, then it could be that all 3 orders enact their plans in parallel, so you only see a part of what it takes to ultimately bring him down.

Basically though, Trahearne could have still had his story and been the “Leader of the Pact”¹ without being ever-present in yours. Kahedins didn’t do much at all in the first part of my story, and Steward Gixx didn’t steal the show in the second part either, so had Trahearne been left as the general “glue” binding the final paths together while not consistently being thrown in our faces, I’d imagine he would be considered much less of a burden and would be far better-received.

¹ vroom, vroom, vroom!)

For me personally, it’s not a matter of skilled vs. not, but the fact that I utterly hate the weapons I’m given as a Ranger. I don’t enjoy melee in the first place, so spear is out, and the Harpoon gun is an exceptionally-weak bleed-heavy weapon that only has one skill that I’d consider particularly good (Feeding Frenzy).

Underwater is the only time I genuinely feel like my pets are an asset, simply because I’m so crippled.

Eh, I’d personally latch onto cloth and Never let go if they did this. That’s the only tier with any number of notably decent-looking armours in my eyes, and I’d love to be able to grab them for my ranger. Especially if we could mix-and-match…

Really, I don’t even care too much about there being any distinctions between the armour classes though. If every armour-class performs the same for me? Great. If I have to take a bit of a penalty? So be it.

You killed my Sieran

. And for what purpose? Just to impact me emotionally? Well sir, you did it.

It honestly missed the mark for me. Not everything needs to be grandiose, with significant build-up and fanfare, I know… But the way this was handled, and how quickly it seems to have been forgotten/pushed aside just made it lose any real impact it should have had.

My thought at that point was basically Seriously? That's what you wanna do? Get rid of the only interesting character you've introduced in such a dull way? Brilliant! :-/

I think the biggest problems (well, aside from the fact that the whole event seemed extremely contrived and unnecessary) were my character’s complete lack of personality/ability to emote¹ and the fact that it was just swept under the rug so quickly with Gixx even making lame ‘jokes’ in the next mission (uggh… that mission…)

Who here thinks the medium armor appearances are mediocre to poor?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dark Saviour.9410

Honestly, I expected to love medium-armour because I tend to be a big fan of the jacket and coat type of looks… However, even I am honestly underwhelmed with it since it almost all ends up looking far too excessive and bulky. I want some styles that seem to flow better and are akin to a slightly more rugged version of what one might expect out of light-armour, but as it stands, no dice.

Though I had initially found the trenchcoat idea appealing, the execution has left me actually running with the Duelist’s top, simply since it is one of the only ‘lighter’ options available. The lack of proper skirts for leggings (or any real degree of variety there) isn’t sitting well with me either. I expect that the reason for that is that it’d clip with 9Ø% of the tops out there, but I’d like something decent to go with the one semi-worthwhile top I could find. :-(

A) I can imagine that if they were there for any length of time, they’d tune out the events like that simply due to frequency. Otherwise they’d have to pretend they stepped into a Groundhog Day loop or something.
2) Events aren’t supposed to scale unless people are actively participating. This keeps people from griefing them and lets them remain at the appropriate difficulty level. If it is counting them simply due to proximity, then that’s a bug and should be reported as such.

but i disagree with the "i don’t have time, but i want the nice stuff" thing. seriously, the legendaries and prestige gear should remain to the people that spend time doing that stuff. back in the original game it was like that, i rocked the normal gear for a loooooooooong time (months, not weeks after launch) before i had the chance to purchase my first 15k gear and i never moaned that "omg i want that but i would be forced to grind and i’ve a job"

It was already touched on, but to me the biggest issue is the disparity in the game between "reward levels". You have either "done right away" or "ridiculous grind".
I’m not particularly opposed to the latter, and I’m fine with the idea of legendaries and such being long-term goals*, but I do feel the game should provide much more in the way of short-term and mid-term goals you can pursue while on that road. Though a "cosmetic treadmill" was mentioned, I don’t even think it needs to be that. Pretty much any system that allows you to feel like you can continue to get something interesting, fun, or worthwhile would work, be it collectible Polymock pieces (whenever that gets added in), a large variety of non-Dungeon, non-legendary (non-grind-heavy) skins you can readily pursue**, unlockable upgrades for your home instance, or whatever.

Basically just things that makes you feel like you can jump in and always look forward to something worthwhile.

And I would like to see rewards normalized across the areas as well. If I didn’t feel that stepping outside of Frostgorge or Orr was a waste, I could probably enjoy myself at least slightly more, honestly.

*That said, as I mentioned elsewhere I would prefer if the game dropped dungeon tokens, Badges of Honor, etc. and just put everything on a karma standard. Even if it takes a long time to get something, it’d be lovely if that time could be spent performing various activities (or just whichever one you prefer) and ’playing how you want’
**These types of skins actually are in the game already to some extent (Zho’s gear, Devona’s gear, etc.), but the rarity of getting an exotic in general combined with the random nature and the current inability of the TP make the pursuit of such skins much less approachable as it stands.

Home Instance after Personal Story Act 1

in Personal Story

Posted by: Dark Saviour.9410

Dark Saviour.9410

(Warning this will contain small spoilers of Home Instance changes as you progress in Personal story)

Have any of you returned to see how many new NPCs are now in your Home Instance after Act 1 of the Personal Story?

I have and there is a lot of new NPCs in my Human Home Instance within Divinity Reach.

For start

Mira who you meet in Claw island now lives in the Tavern on the 2nd floor.

Exemplar Mehid and Exemplar Salia now stands outside the Tavern

the Skritt (since I chosen them as allies) now live in the back ally of my Home Instance.

Laranthir can now be found near the entrance to my Salma District. (and I didn’t meet this guy until Orr part of the story)

Scholar Octavian Inkblood is seen buying things in the center of Salma District.

a few dialogues have been changed from the NPCs you know. Like how (if you’re a commoner) Petra talks about how little i visit and how Andrew enjoys bragging about how he knew who i was before I helped to defeated Zhaitan.

However, this is only from a Human Story. The Race you are will have your Home Instance affected more than the other Home Instances.

I honestly can not remember who Mira or Octavian Inkblood are, and yet there they are in my (Sylvari) home instance as well. Mira’s just randomly standing near the twins and medics and doesn’t even afford a greeting, so she especially just seemed… kinda random… Good to at least know where she came from I suppose.

Would be nice if the NPCs that showed up would actually speak to me though… They’re just kinda randomly… there… Would also be lovely for Shashoo to get a proper Quaggan house since she looks especially awkward just suspended there in the pond. Or at least some mobility so she isn’t floating so disturbingly still.
And maybe tie Iowerth to one of the archery boards. Or set him on fire. Either would be fun.

MMO Manifesto vs. what we have now

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dark Saviour.9410

Dark Saviour.9410

Do agree on a lot of the initial points. Especially with regard to personal story. I’d hoped there’d be significant variance and dozens of potential branches throughout, with at least 3 major paths that end up at essentially the same place at the very end (depending on your order), but instead we got a disjointed mess of nearly unrelated content, our character had basically no personality, and all paths end up converging into an underwhelming experience rife with continuity errors against a rather dull, generic enemy. And that’s not to say anything about the fights that were lazily shoehorned into everything, the dialogue that was just… bad… and how poorly characterization was handled in general.

As for the presence of grind? I sort of saw that one coming… Not to the extent it did though… :-/

But, I’d say that removing grind entirely would unfortunately require an overhaul to an extent that will never realistically happen, honestly…
To make it more bearable though, they could embrace the “Play it your way” mentality a bit more openly. By this, I mean remove Dungeon tokens, Badges of Honor, and any other such currency from the game and put everything on a Karma standard. As such, you could vary your activities and still make progress towards a goal you may have.

And to address the inevitable:
‘But nobody would run dungeons if they could get the currency to buy their armour in other ways!’

>Then it sounds to me like you’ve got a problem with your dungeons. If people would choose to flat out avoid them if given the chance, then they must not be all that fun.

Just curious, but has anyone who’s played through the sylvari storyline seen any change in their home instance? I went back to visit mine recently, after reading this thread and well after hitting 80, and I don’t think I’ve seen a single change to it, whatsoever. But it has been weeks since I was last there so I may not realize there’s a difference. If there is, it’s not apparent to me.

I thought all home instances were supposed to change in some way to reflect our actions, even if minutely.

Basically, a few NPCs show up.
In mine I’ve got:

Kahedins
The White Stag
Those ugly, obnoxious twins
A repulsive Priory weed that needs to be pruned
Shashoo the Quaggan randomly floating in the shallow pool (seriously… at least give her a small Quaggan house or something. Just looks awkward.)

and I don’t know WHY the following are there, but:
A Charr named Scholar Octavian Inkblood with his pet Salamander Drake
A human named Mira.

They all afford only a greeting save for Mira who cannot be interacted with at all…

Your thoughts about Orr

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dark Saviour.9410

Dark Saviour.9410

I’ll just repeat what I posted at another forum <_<:

I’ll preface this by stating that I hate what was done with the Risen. They had so much potential to genuinely feel like a real threat to the world and be a horrible, unstoppable force of undeath. Instead they feel like a generic enemy force with a zombie theme. To me, they should have been a massive, mindless, wave of death and decay that consumes all in their path and spreads like a virus. No words, maybe one or two lieutenants along the lines of Tequila Sunrise (none of that Thadeus Ghostrite bollocks), and an uncountable number of relentless, shambling corpses.
Instead we got talking zombies that scream about serving their master, intelligent creatures that can break into temples, zombie anti-aircraft weaponry, etc… It just completely killed any sense of foreboding and relentlessness they had by making them feel like any generic opposing force.

Carrying that on to Orr though, what I would have liked to see is essentially massive, shambling zergs. 1Ø times as many risen, moving shoulder-to-shoulder as a giant wave you have to cut through. Make them less obnoxious and less resilient to compensate for this, but make it actually feel like a rotting nation of the dead rather than just a dreary-looking enemy kingdom. As it stands, they’re just a zombie-themed version of Kournans or White Mantle, or any other enemy military.

And they should invade. Right now I never genuinely felt like Tyria was in peril. Part of that stems from the fairly insular events and areas, but a large part of it is because the Risen don’t move on. Simply having them move North in large World events would be a massive step in the right direction (this is something I think should have been done in general. If the dragon attacks were true world events involving large multi-zone event chains, town criers summoning players, etc.and only happened every few days or once a week, they’d be far more awesome and impactful) . If they moved en masse in an all-consuming swath of destruction and began to take the more peaceful regions, they would DEFINITELY seem like more of a pressing threat, and beating them back into Orr and then containing them would feel crucial. As it is, fighting in Orr doesn’t really feel any different than fighting in any other hostile country would. Honestly, it feels even less pressing since there aren’t any real strongholds the Risen keep and push forth from. There are no areas which truly feel like the “Heart of Hell”. Risen just spontaneously appear at the location of events, and if you beat them off, that’s that.

I don’t really know how they could change events in Orr in general without a massive revamp of the game, but having some Risen strongholds with enemies hundreds thick where they spew forth to march against the pact would help. As would a lot of much larger, daily or weekly events that can shift the very nature of the zones when, and after, they are active.

Oh, and get rid of the zombie anti-aircraft guns.
That was just bloody stupid.

Oh, bloody…
This made me check, and I just realized that insufferable git Iowerth is polluting my treehouse. I hated him to such an extent, it almost made me avoid going with the Priory, which is a selection I’d planned on making since the Orders were first announced. Was exceptionally relieved to find out that I wasn’t stuck with him once I joined and got a new (and much better) partner instead… Would have loved her to be there had it been sensible story-wise, but him? Just no. I now want the ability to serve eviction notices. :-/

On that note though, if the story is still adding NPCs into our home instances at that point, I’d like to see it do so at further story steps as well… I specifically chose an option suggested by an NPC later on in the hopes it would get her added to my home instance, but no dice.
Come on! If I gotta get stuck with Iowerth, the least you can do is throw me a bone and give me Sayeh as well.

Just noticed a couple of other NPCs crashing there too that I don’t recall seeing early on though. Some Charr scholar with a drake, and a human named Mira. No idea why they’re there, as the Charr only greets and Mira affords no interaction at all…

Anyone Quit?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Dark Saviour.9410

Dark Saviour.9410

I haven’t quit yet, but I’m in the “log in and question what to do, find nothing I particularly find enjoyable/”worth it", faff about aimlessly for a few minutes, and then tab out." phase that tends to precede quitting. It was something I knew would be coming far in advance though, so I’m not particularly surprised. Just somewhat irked it hit so soon.

Long story short, I’m not particularly pleased with how the personal storyline, dynamic events, and other world-building aspects played out, so I don’t feel particularly invested in the world. And with map completion turned into an achievement/checklist, it turned my desire to just wander and explore into a compulsion to just rush and get that out of the way, killing what I had expected to be one of the game’s strongest points for me.

So I’m at the point where it’s pretty much either PvP (which I loathe), do dungeons (which I honestly don’t even like the set-up of), or keep repeating events (which would have been alright if they were more diverse, comprehensive, and didn’t individually repeat so much).

The one thing that I actually see that I could really enjoy at this point is crafting. However, outside of cooking, discovery was severely underutilized (and degenerated into just a leveling boost, IMO) making the whole experimentation process rather moot, and the cost or grind for mats defeats that fun as well…

That said, if you like the direction they took with the personal story and events, and can find yourself genuinely drawn into Tyria, I can see where those things could get you pumped. For me though, it was a decent ride that’ll likely be ending (or at least massively slowing) pretty soon. Like I did with GW1 though, I’ll probably check in later… May be months, may be years, or may be days if something turns around. We’ll see I suppose.

What's the point with using a Longbow?

For me, it’s basically just because of the 15ØØ range trait for longbow. :-\
I like the idea of playing a max-range sniper, even if the game doesn’t seem too particularly receptive to the idea.

Other than that, it’s a decent opener if you want to run dual bows.

Add in special crafting recipes for Chocolate Bar greatswords and Paula Deen bows that fire butter.

Then everyone wins! >_>

Make way we can play only with Ranger

Soo.. you picked the wrong class, go roll a thief if you want to wear medium armor and do crazy ranged damage all by yourself.

If they gave them some max-range options such as rifle or longbow, I would have. >_>

Mid-range is bleh.

Bats… First and foremost, bats.

That said, I also want to tame one of those humpback whales. >_>
Or a Dolyak. <_<

Rollerbeetles if they ever show up again could be fun. Maybe some ghostly creatures too (Ghostly Ascalonian hunting dog? Alpha [Or whatever the ghost kitty in the ruins of Ashford is named]? etc…)

Beyond all that, Llamas, pangolins, and raptors come to mind…

Should rangers be able to use rifles?

If rangers did get rifles I actually would prefer them to function as something akin to a hybrid between longbows and shortbows. Namely, keep all the mechanics built for maintaining distance between the two (cripple, knockback, evasion) and build on that, possibly adding pin-down, stun, etc. to the mix.

I’d like a weapon built almost entirely around maintaining your range and the rifle would provide a good vessel for that.

Permanent Stow - An Option for Lone Wolves

I would support a perma-stow option if only to make jumping puzzles less annoying. Having them pop back out when you take damage from a fall gets really old really fast. And/or some sort of perma (stealth when not in combat feature) so that they don’t decide to run in front of me or path through a mob and draw aggro I was trying to avoid…

What is a Ranger? A responce to the confused.

And who cares tbh? I play ranger coz for me it IS hunter/archer type (there is nothing closer to it in GW), and nothing will change it.

Pretty much this.
I’m only interested in (max-)ranged fighting, so I was stuck choosing between Ranger and Warrior here. Wasn’t all that enamoured with longbow on Warrior, and saw that Rangers could trait longbow for 15ØØ range, so that made my choice.

Regardless of what a ranger is supposed to be in lore, I (and I assume many others) chose one simply because they were the closest thing GW2 provided to a max-range fighter. Had there been a “mercenary” class that could use all ranged weapons (and had 15ØØ range on at least one of them) or a sniper type of class, I’d have rolled with that. But as it stands, you want range, you go with ranger.

Legendary Bows

These are actually the only two legendaries I have all that much interest in, honestly.

What most people would probably prefer would likely end up boring me to death. I can appreciate dark, brutal, etc. designs, but unless you go extremely over-the-top in that respect, it just ends up being rather dull, and even if you do, things still tend to run together a bit much.

So I for one welcome our Rainbow Unicorn overlords.

Should rangers be able to use rifles?

in Ranger

Dark Saviour.9410

I’d be in support of it simply because
A) I happen to only be interested in long-range weapons.
and
2) I’ve made a ranger my main. >_>

Ideally, what I would have liked is a class that was almost entirely built around pure-range (getting access to both types of bows and guns), with their traits, utilities, etc. almost entirely facilitating keeping themselves at a great distance in some form or another…

As we didn’t get that though, I pretty much settled on Ranger due to Longbow+Eagle Eye and Shortbow having a 12ØØ range… It’s generally decent enough for the most part, but I’m not really enamoured with things as they are (especially as longbow is concerned). So anything that can give me more options on that front would be better.

(Honestly, Rifle/Longbow Thief would probably suit me better, but I’d still take Rifle ranger over that at this point simply since I don’t want to re-roll. <_<)

The greets are the worst part… If I had to hear that bloody Master Chef in LA say “It’s nice to see you.” one more time…

That said, the NPC interactions are too overplayed as well… Have had to hear the difference between outhouses and water closets more times than I’d care to remember. Just don’t ask me if anything live down there…
