I don’t mind working a long time for the mastery system because that is real character progress….
I don’t like being forced into fake character progression. Why shouldn’t I be able to spend the same amount of hero points to unlock an elite spec as is required for a normal character traitline??? These elite specs are not more powerful. Your character doesn’t get any better. “Don’t pee on my leg and tell me it is raining” – Judge Judy

We need to go back to the beginning…. Please bring back skill points and profession book trainers…… New Player Experience was bad enough… but this elite specialization 400 hero point bullkitten requirement is even worse.
elites specs are not character progress….. Actually if you don’t have the whole elite traitline and try to play with a partial elite trait line you actually become weaker…. How is that character progression. Heck, even with the full elite unlocked you are the same power level with just a new way to play….. Nope, no character progression here
mastery system = character progression This is what should take a lot of time to do
elite spec = alternate playstyle Nothing elite about these specs…. there can’t be because of pvp balancing and pay to win factors….. “Elite” was just a name thrown on them to justify a hideous 400 hero point cost…. Those elite traits and utilities should be the same cost as any other traitline circle and utility circle…
I agree the expansion had some very nice things about it. 400 hero points for an “elite” spec that isn’t elite was not one of these nice things. It shares a similar stench with the new player experience.
You’re demonstrating stereotypical white knight rhetoric…… I guess that is just my stereotypical internet rage talking.

Mastery system = character progression (Really like this system)
Elite specialization = different playstyle for the profession….. not more powerful(not really elite at all) Why the enormous cost? Please change this Anet These elite traitlines and utilities should cost the same as regular traitlines and utilities

I believe the mastery system is what needs to be unlocked in HoT not the elite spec.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: Dashingsteel.3410
See I feel you should be able to buy HoT elite spec with your old hero points you earned in the core game. Rytlock started HoT straight away sporting his new elite spec. Yes, I know he had that adventure down in the mists and all… but our character, the pact commander, defeated Zhaitan, saved Lion’s Arch by defeating Scarlet, been fighting our way through mordrem territory as we follow after Caithe, so why can’t our character have picked up new profession skills during all of this…..
I see why masteries should require HoT content but not “elite” specializations
elite trait line should cost 65 hero points just like regular trait lines…. elite professions aren’t any better than regular professions because of balancing

I would be in favor of making all hero challenges worth 1 point. All existing hero challenges in core game and expansion would continue to exist. Make the elite traits and utilities cost the same as regular profession trait lines and utilities. Elite traits would be on its own upgrade circle… elite utilites would be on its own upgrade circle… just like the normal traits and utilities…..
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I like my idea better as it would only require 65 points for elite trait line…. just like the normal ones…. After all elite specs aren’t any better than normal professions…. balance issues
Know what is really annoying?? 2800 hero points…… that’s what it costs at the present to work up 7 elites.. and this is for specializations that aren’t truly “elite”. Anet has just dubbed these specializations elite to rationalize this hideous requirement. These elite traits and utilities should cost the same as normal traits and utilities.. I want to enjoy exploring the jungle with the elite specs not run the map with tunnel vision ignoring everything but hero challenges over and over and over and over

Why would you want to trivialize hero points earned in core Tyria?

HoT hero challenges should not be necessary if the elite traits and utilities cost the same as normal traits and utilities.

This is how I feel about “elite” specializations. There is nothing elite about these specs…. there can’t be because of pvp balance issues and more than that there would be pay to win issues(expansion vs. non-expansion players) Anet just tagged on the word elite to these specs to rationalize a hideous 400 hp requirement…. The traits and utilities should cost the same as the normal traits and utilities…. The traits and utilities should be on separate ugrade wheels just like normal traits and utilities…. also keep elite skins out of the trait and utility process.

Change the elite spec traits and utilities cost…. Make them the same cost as the normal traits and utilities and keep the traits and utility upgrade circles separate….. If Anet did this my rating for HoT would be 7 out of 10
Monsters and npcs are at a nice competitive level, maps are beautiful, story seems solid so far
Please no more kangaroo wars or flying squirrel wars for future expansions. Don’t like trend towards platforming game
I am coming to the conclusion that if you agree with what a person writes on the forums then that makes them insightful and unbiased…… lol…. but that is probably just my biased and uninsightful perception of things
Anet listens to complaints. I wouldn’t have received an extra character slot when I pre-purchased HoT otherwise.

Once again…. Elite traits and utilities should cost exactly the same as the regular traits and utilities…. the elite traits should be on their own upgrade circle and the elite utilities should be on their own upgrade circle just like the normal traits and utilities… Why? Because there is nothing “elite” about these specializations… They aren’t any better than the normal professions… I think they chose to add the word elite to these specializations to justify a ludicrous amount of hero points….. Terrible decision. Please change this Anet
The art is great. The music is great. Story seems very solid so far… The monsters and npcs seem to be at a good competitive level… Love that you can see your guild members when you look at the map of tyria…. Love the guild halls….. Love the elite specs(I will be coming back to this one)…. The Auric map is a breathtaking masterpiece….. Really like the mastery system
Do not like the trend towards platforming… Please no kangaroo wars or flying squirrel wars in the next expansion please…. Mushrooms should be for eating not bouncing on… Profession specialization traits and utilities should cost the same as normal traits and utilities…. They are not “elite” in any way besides the title that anet planted on them to justify a ludicrous amount of hero points to unlock them.
They did a switcheroo on our skill points. All those levels we earned were turned into something else. Thought it was a crappy decision to end the skill point system. I think those skill scrolls messed it up. Wish we got to keep the levels we actually earned by doing stuff and not clicking on skill scrolls.
I expected the elite trait line to cost the same as other trait lines. After all the elite is no better than regular professions. The mastery system is what should take a lot of time.

Character progression is about improvement. Unlocking an elite doesn’t improve your character or it least it is not supposed to because of pvp balancing. That is why I say elites have nothing to do with character progression. The mastery system on the other hand actually gives you advantages once you achieve them over players who don’t have them.
Elite trait lines and utilities should cost the same as regular trait lines and utilities. These specializations aren’t really elite. They give no advantage over normal professions. They just offer a different playstyle. These specializations are NOT character progression. Character progression is contained in the mastery system. The mastery system is what should take a lot of time to achieve. Let us achieve those masteries with the elite specs please.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Here is the solution. Have the elite trait line cost the same as the regular trait lines. Have the elite utitlities cost the same as regular utilities. Have the traits and utilities on separate completion wheels just like the regular builds. Don’t throw in skins as part of the price of unlocking the specialization. Getting this specialization is not about character progression it is just getting another playstyle. The mastery system is actually the character progression and that is the system that should take a lot of time to achieve.
Elite specializations are not character progression. They are an alternate playstyle. The mastery system is character progression. Elites don’t give you and advantage over normal professions they just offer a different way to play. Masteries actually give you an advantage once you achieve them. Why have to grind out 400 hero points just for an alternate play style? I like the mastery system and think it is fine the way it is. Unlocking these “elites” for 400 hero points is just idioitic. These alternate traits and utilities should cost the same as the regular traits and utilities.
“You should have to earn it. It is an elite after all!!” Reallly??? Besides Anet tagging these specializations with the word elite what is truly elite about them? Are they more powerful than the regular professions? If so we have a pay to win problem(expansion players vs. non-expansion players) These new trait lines and utility skills shouldn’t cost anymore than regular trait lines and utilities. Using buzz words to justify 400 hero points is simply ridiculous.
Specialization should cost the same as any other trait line. The utility skills should also cost the same as other utilities and should be separate from the trait line wheel. A lot of players want to experience the wonderful new maps and events WITH the elite specs. The mastery system should be the thing you have to unlock to display the new growth of your character not the profession specialization. I really wish gw2 would have kept the skill point system. That system didn’t drag you around by a leash forcing you into certain content. Wish we still had profession books and skill points not this hero point crap. The stench of the new player experience lingers on.
I love the maps. I love the difficulty setting of the npc’s and monsters. The story so far has been good. The only complaint I have is this unnecessary cost for the profession specialization. Tagging the word elite onto the specialization doesn’t make it magically elite. They are on par with the regular professions.

Oh I enjoyed the new zones a lot but unfortunately playing that way brought me no closer to getting my “elite” specialization. This is what I resent about the 400 hero point cost. I have to stop enjoying the spontaneity of the new content to solely focus on these idiotic hero challenges. The really maddening think is these are just specializations to the professions there is nothing “elite” about them. They just used the word elite to justify running through all these hoops.
Are these specializations really elite?? For example, are all the ele players clamoring to be Tempests? I mean they are elite…. right?? Calling these specializations elites is just semantics to justify all the running through hoops to get them.

Calling these specializations elite was the big mistake. It implies that they are somehow better than the regular professions and that makes them worth all these hero points. Should have just called them profession specializations and made the trait lines cost the same as any other trait line. All those profession skins could have been gated behind these challenges and that would be fine with me but 400 hero points for one trait line, one weapon and some utitlities is bullkitten.
400 hero points for an “elite” that is no better or worse than the original professions is what is ridiculous.
The Auric map was breathtaking. A masterpiece.

elite trait line should cost the same as any other trait line…. People really want to experience the charm of your new content, but they want to do it with the new elite profession. “But you should have to earn an elite”. Let’s be honest. These elite professions are on par with the original professions… some better, some worse….. The only thing elite about these specs is that they were dubbed with the name elite.

Pretty telling that the thing he likes most about the game is not really the game.
(This post was written in response to the op saying the thing he liked most was seeing all the whiners posting on the forum…… the op has since edited that little snippet out of his post)

Actually if you want to play an elite, you are being forced to do it. The mastery system is supposed to be your progression in HoT. Profession choices shouldn’t be a grind.
I already leveled my character to 80….. You mean I have to do that to the same character again?? for 1 weapon, 1 trait line and a few utility skills????
It is 1 new trait line and 1 new weapon……. If I had to aquire 400 hero points in the original game to get 1 weapon, 1 trait line and a few utitlity skills I wouldn’t have been happy then either and yes I know there aren’t that many in the original game.
That would be true if it were really “elite”. These elite trait lines are comparable to the original profession trait lines… Nothing special here to grind for.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Elite trait line should cost exactly the same as any other trait line. Elites really aren’t any better than existing professions…. some are better, some are worse… The unlocking part should be for the unique armors and weapons that are elite based.. Why throw all that junk in with the trait lines anyway???? We want to play the elites…..
Yes, this trend towards a platformer game is not good. The core game was fine because jps were there but you weren’t forced into them. The vertical nature of this game is really not my cup of tea. If there is an expansion after this please tone down the platforming aspects.

By using the word “elite” to describe the new trait lines for each profession, Anet thinks that justifies grinding out 400 hero points just to achieve it. Some of those “elite” trait lines and corresponding new weapons aren’t as good as the original profession’s(looking at you Tempest). Now if I am wrong and those “elites” truly are more powerful and worth all those shiny hero points then we would have a pay to win issue(non-expansion players vs expansion players) These really aren’t elites they are more like alternate professions. 400 hero points is ludicrous.

Why shouldn’t we have elites day one? I mean Rytlock got his elite day 1 of the expansion. Yes, I know he went into the mists and had some mystical experience or whatever. Well heck, our characters took down Zhaitan, Scarlet Briar saving Lion’s Arch, and we haven’t learned some awesome new skills along the way??? Come on… make it a story thing… I wanted to play through the expansion as an elite. There is already a mastery system that is supposed to mark your progression in HoT.

-The artwork is solid…. love the Auric map in particular
-Story seems good through 1st 3 acts… voice acting is solid
-Pleasantly surprised not to see many bugs on 1st day
-Music is nice
-kangaroo wars or flying squirrel wars….. really… enough with the platformer stuff(that comment is for expansions in the future as this one is already set)
-monsters seemed to be at a good level…. however hero challenges are near impossible unless you have some help(some scaling for solo player would be nice as it is not always easy to find players to help)
-not alt friendly
I am really excited for the launch but still think that the requirement to have all trait lines completed to get elite is a dumb requirement. Let’s look at the ranger class for example. What does the skirmishing and marksmanship trait lines have in common with the druid trait line? Doesn’t seem to be a close relationship between them. I don’t understand why you would have to have those trait lines mastered to learn to be a druid. It’s just a waste of 120 hero points. I don’t mind playing content at all. I have over 5000 hours played. I don’t like an arbitrary rule wasting my earned hero points. The first 12 hero challenges in HoT will just be to make up for my unused trait lines and that is frustrating. With that said I still love the game and hope for better decisions from anet in the future.
It would be nice if I didn’t have to waste 120 hero points on 2 trait lines I never use. That is 12 hero challenges in HoT just to make up for wasted hero points.

I hate wasting hero points on things I am not going to use. I guess they are saying you must master all aspects of the core profession before you can go elite. I was sure looking forward to playing my scrapper on launch day, but it seems I will be hunting hero challenges.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they nerfed silverwastes loot. It would shut off another way to make gold for the core game only players. Yes, I know that fractals is core game too but with HoT coming out with fractals masteries it is semi core game now. If Silverwastes does get nerfed it is just another step to move the best loot to HoT content.
I never said there was a problem with raids having them. I think they should have exclusive raiding skins. Legendary armor is the problem.
