Yep, it’s all about the money. I withhold mine until they revert to their original philosophy. Platforming and gated content isn’t a direction for the game that excites me.
I never had trouble getting an event or festival skin before the release of HoT. Nightfury and Winter’s Presence have taken things to an insane level. Jumping puzzles never were required for skins in vanilla gw2. I guess those skins are “cheapened” though.
kitten , I thought I bought an rpg not a platformer.
Great post op : )
I think this is the problem with HoT in general. “We want challenging content!” Unfortunately that is not all they want. They want there to be a caste system in the game. The haves(those with superior skills) and the have nots(those who don’t possess superior reflexes, dexterity, have disabilities…. etc) "We don’t want scrubs to have the same skins as we do.
HoT has changed Gw2 from what was mostly a cooperative game mindset into a competitive game mindset.

Old Tyria by far
If they would award tokens each time you complete a festival event( bell choir, windersday jp, infinitarium, snowball fight) and then have a token requirement to get the collectibles. That way people could have played the content they enjoyed and get the skin too.

Before HoT, I always had a legitimate chance of acquiring a festival or event skin. The requirements were sensible.
Since HoT, I present Nightfury and Winter’s Presence….. The requirements for these skins are just nauseating.
When people talk about the grind in HoT, this is exactly the kind of thing they are talking about. You either have to grind for those drinks during the festival OR spend a ton of gold on drinks( cynical gold sinks also a trend since HoT)
On a side note Jumping puzzle requirement is crap. Prior to HoT jp’s were just a sideshow attraction. HoT is trying to turn my rpg into a platformer and that sucks.
Oh for the good old days, when acquiring things didn’t require platforming skills. Three years of playing gw2 and I was NEVER required to do a jp for a festival or event skin. Jumping puzzles were just sideshow attractions that were available to those who enjoyed them. They were never forced down your throat……
Then comes HoT……… It’s as if the development team has been taken over by Nintendo nerds. Platforming keeps being emphasized since the release of the expansion.
I went to play a rpg and a platformer game broke out. Change the name to Mario Wars 2.
Anet, please go back to your original stance on platforming. Let it be around but not mandatory.
I just don’t think the Nintendo crap is the way to go if they want retention.
Sure glad the old content skins like selfless potion for example were never tied to a jp. Jp’s used to be an alternative activity that was extra “fluff” for the game. Seems like Nintendo nerds have taken over the development of the game.
Jumping puzzle is also required to get winter’s presence. This is another unfortunate trend since HoT. Platforming seems to be an emphasis since HoT.
I was pretty bummed about the jp requirement too. I guess it saved me from trying to get the drinks achievement. Just gonna sell all my winterday gifts now. No snow for me.
Central Tyria’s maps are infinitely better than the maps in HoT. I am not talking about the difficulty level of the enemies just the map design itself.
There should be a balance between skins you can earn in the game and skins you buy in the gemstore. Right now it seems to be tilted in favor of the gemstore.
When gw2 first started they had a system in place that supported “playing the game your way”.
This started changing with the arrival of the New Player Experience. Ever since the NPE the game has been changing into “playing the game the way Anet wants you to”.
This is what rankles me about the expansion. Mastery points are just fun killers. Why not let experience fill the mastery bar and that be enough to gain that mastery tier?
So let’s say my character spends 1000 hours in the jungle. All that time in the jungle he hasn’t learned anything about poison lore, gliding, etc. because he didn’t do any of these Nintendo mini-games or other specific mastery points? It’s just dumb.
Yay a positive post!!! Yes, absolutely positive about haters!!! Yay so positive!!! HATERS!!! Yay so positive!!!! So positive about the negative!!!
Here’s a positive post. I positively believe that this game is entertaining. I also positively believe that Anet has made mistakes that need to be rectified.
Oh wait, that last statement was just hateful.
It would be nice to get devs posts about gw2 on official gw2 forum. I don’t even see why there needs to be other gw2 forums unless it’s easier to create a hivemind. It really is frustrating to hear about dev posts on other sites.
No wonder people say that Anet doesn’t communicate well with players.
This wouldn’t even be an issue if Anet wouldn’t have made elite specs so overpriced. I know they reduced the number of hero points for them but it wasn’t enough. I don’t want to hear the character progression arguments as “elites” are no better than the regular professions. If they are then Anet has a buy to win issue. The elite traitline should cost no more than any other trait line. There should also not be a huge skill wheel. Traits and utilities should have separate wheel.
I love playing the game. I just don’t want to play the game the way Anet wants me to play the game. Unfortunately, playing the game my way means that there is no progression for my character. Why have mastery points? Let experience fill up the mastery bar to earn the mastery. I don’t want to do adventures. I never liked Nintendo crap and I refuse to play it now.
I really miss the “play your way” philosophy that gw2 had when it first launched. I could do anything in the game(pvp aside) and the experience from such activities could be used to progress my character. Now they have made it where experience is not enough. Play our way or else.

My concerns with the expansion
-vertical maps and making platforming skills mandatory (adventures)
-When gw2 first came out, you could progress your character by doing anything in the pve and wvw maps as well. Over time Anet has taken this freedom away. They have dictated the content you must play(hero points, mastery points) if you are going to progress your character. I wish they would backtrack and let experience be the end all and be all of character progression. This method guarantees a play your way concept.
-the new guild hall system is a cynical gold and materials sink that strips players of their hard earned loot. The influence system was much better. With the influence system, you could earn influence for you guild by doing stuff in the game. Now unless you are actually doing a guild mission or giving up your loot what you do in the game doesn’t help the guild at all.
-the last concern with expansion is the gutting of core content and repackaging it in the expansion
-
Music is great wherever you go in this game whether it be core maps or HoT.
Actually I liked the inflation because it made things like cultural armor, mining picks, axes, salvaged kits etc. more affordable.
It is certainly changing. I think evolving isn’t the right word for it. That seems to suggest improvement.
I agree with op don’t like the vertical maps. Go back to the style of maps in core gw2( not the city maps and no drytop either). I am not talking about difficulty of mobs or monsters. I just don’t want these vertical maps.
Well they actually did up the gear grind. Look at the new requirements for ascended crafting. I know it’s not a new tier of armor but the mats to get them got increased.
I have the opposite opinion on point #3. I think the mastery points should be dropped. Filling the mastery bar with experience should be enough to get your mastery. All the mastery points do is force players into content Anet dictates. Player freedom is hindered in such a system. They need to go back to when GW2 first launched. Content was never forced to progress a character.
Those bundle “deals” are just ridiculous. Half the cost of the expansion for an outfit, a weapon skin, a glider skin, total makeover kit and some dyes……. Stop the bundling and sell these thing individually. The expansion cost 50 bucks….. Are these bundles really worth half of that?
Perhaps if Anet wasn’t always trying to “fix” things that don’t need to be fixed(original skill point and book trainer system was fine, influence guild system was fine, economy “fix” aka bleed the players dry) they could have added a lot more actual content through the years.
The new systems in HoT feel like a job. They even give you a list of chores to do right off the bat. You don’t have the freedom to play as you want and progress. Nope, you have to do the HoT checklist or else.
When GW2 first launched, it had skill point and book trainer system. You could earn experience through hearts, exploration, dungeons, gathering, killing monsters, doing dailies and monthlies, and crafting. Didn’t matter which one of these things you did it progressed your character
With the intro of the New player experience, anet started trying to direct your character into certain content. Hero points furthered the effort to prod you character into specific content. Mastery points in current system really force your character into specific content.
Platforming content used to be optional. Now with adventures, they have dangled mastery points behind this Nintendo crap.
I loved the freedom of the original spirit of gw2. Too bad Anet have turned their backs on that concept.

When gw2 first launched, it had a system with skill points and book trainers. Your character gained experience by killing creatures, doing hearts, events, crafting, gathering, exploring, and doing your story. Didn’t matter which one of those things you did you got experience and it counted towards progressing your character. Those were the days of play as you want.
Then the new player experience raised its ugly head. This is where the game started to try to direct your character into certain content. The hero point system furthered this effort to prod your character into certain content. Mastery points just add another way for anet to dictate the content you play.
I was a big fan of the original system. It allowed player freedom. Players could do things they ENJOY and still progress. Thought that was the point of games anyway.
Take away the mastery points and allow mastery bars to be filled with experience only to progress. That would give players freedom to play as they want.
I just hate mastery points. Why isn’t filling the mastery bar with experience not enough to get your mastery?
-Don’t like the vertical maps(hoping for flat maps if another expansion comes out)
-current guild system strips players of their loot and gold
-Changes to crafting are terrible
-all the Nintendo crap
-stripping core content and reselling it in HoT
-gated content and forcing players into certain content(mastery points)
These are all things that have disappointed me about the expansion. There are things that are nice about this expansion (beautiful artwork, mastery system(filling mastery bars with experience should be enough to earn these), elite specs, guild halls(should have kept influence system and allowed these to be bought with influence), new pets are great, and some of the new events are kind of fun. It seems that this expansion is preparing to have fun before you can actually have fun.
The current guild system is a cynical device to strip players of their loot and gold. The old system was much better.
I don’t know why filling the mastery bar with experience isn’t enough to get the mastery. Why even have mastery points? Seems to be a way to force you into certain content.
I agree with you Lobo…… Guild system didn’t need “fixing”. The original influence system was fine. Why do the devs waste their time reworking stuff in the game that isn’t broken? They could have added more things to do.
(edited by Dashingsteel.3410)
What’s not fair is making players give up their hard earned loot. The passive influence system was so much better than this monstrosity.
I think it is crap that they changed the whole guild system. Many guilds had tons of influence built up that they had earned. Why shouldn’t guild halls have been available to be purchased right away with influence? After all, many guilds have existed for 3 YEARS. Now they have instituted a cynical system that saps the loot that guild members have earned. These guild members who donate can later be kicked from said guild and what do they have to show for their donation???? I really can’t stand the new guild system. Anet is always wasting time and development reworking stuff instead of creating content.
I would not prepurchase for the following reasons
- taking away core content and reselling it in expansion
- don’t like vertical maps and will wait to see if flat maps return
- don’t like the Nintendo crap
- not enough armor and weapon skins offered
-don’t like gated content and don’t like being forced into content(hero and mastery points)

Not a fan of the adventures either. On the topic of mastery points, I feel they are used to force you into certain content. Why isn’t it good enough to fill the mastery bar with experience to get your mastery? Why are mastery points necessary? I don’t think adventures would get much play if they didn’t have mastery points dangling over them.
The new direction that bothers me is this emphasis on platforming skills. I would have preferred 12 flat maps to the 4 multilayered maps. Enough with the bouncing mushrooms and the Nintendo minigames.
Anet, may we have your response on this topic???? You need to fix this. A product should be bought on its merits not through underhanded business tactics.
The only thing I buy with karma is some food items. There isn’t really anything worth buying with karma. It would be nice if they would add some better merchandise to the karma vendors.

By that logic they should nerf pvp….. Competitive pvpers don’t want noobs joining their parties.
Wouldn’t it be great if in the new Star Wars movie Han Solo and Chewbacca gave in to their sexual feelings for each other? The movie makers could insert a touching scene where Chewie explores Han’s " dark side". Wouldn’t that be great
This whole thread is just silly. Please stop the sjw madness.

Anet didn’t nerf dungeon loot because vets weren’t teaching new players. They wanted those dungeon runners to transfer to raids. This was just one of a number of things they have done to cajole players into HoT.
Please Anet, no more of the sjw agenda. There are enough of these types of relationships in the game already. No more pc behavior modeling training. I really am stunned that anyone could follow the story and think that Logan and Rytlock were experiencing sexual tension for each other. That is just ridiculous.
I actually liked the inflation. Things like cultural armor didn’t increase in price and it made them more affordable. I don’t want the economy to revert to the state it was at gw2’s launch.
I agree with the op.
While I don’t agree with your worst expansion ever comment, I do agree with you about not liking the vertical nature of the maps. There is a lot to like about this expansion but the verticality is not one of them for me. Part of this expansion feels to Nintendo for me. I hope in future expansions that platforming is kept as a sideshow attraction as it was in the core game.
