Rangers are great at single target damage (if you catch your opponent off guard) but still suck on the AoE front.
I suspect most people whom play rangers.. in fact play them to use the Longbow.
The Ranger description:
Rangers rely on a keen eye, a steady hand, and the power of nature itself. Unparalleled archers, rangers are capable of bringing down foes from a distance with their bows. With traps, nature spirits, and a stable of loyal pets at their command, rangers can adapt to any situation."
IMO, I don’t think an unparalleled archer class will be running around with a GS bashing things at close range; flinging torches; tossing axes, or stabbing things..
Anet should just expect most rangers to run around with the Longbow, it is what it is. We can still run around with traps while using a longbow, and we don’t have any choice on whether we can have a pet or not. Sounds to me that when most rangers are using Longbows, it’s working as intended.
Now if they want them to use the shortbow, well maybe un-nerf it then. Give it more damage and return it’s range.
PPK combats the overnight PPT advantages some servers have with their overwhelming coverage. If the NA time slot can hold the PPT well and win the majority of the fights (which is what I find usually happens), it is possible to negate SEA blobs running the map.
For me personally, this change was needed badly; however, we’ll have to wait and see for it’s full effect. At least there is a trial period.
Well for me personally, I play a ranger because I want to use a longbow. If Anet intends on nerfing it so the Rangers are somewhat of a joke again, I suppose I’ll have to hop on another class.
Like Airos, if I wanted to use a sword or Axe, or a GS, i’d jump on my warrior.
The definition of overpowered is a build someone comes across which their current build cannot counter. Forget having to alter their own build, that’s just crazy talk.
Please anyone, is there a class and build in this game that is pretty much good or excels in all situations? Please tell me as I’m lazy and I do not want to change my class or build at all.
Find me that class/build, I’ll play it and we’ll call it OP.
People need to keep in mind here that rangers still do not have good utility compared to other classes in nearly all scenarios. Calling them OP in any sense is a bit ridiculous in my opinion.
In order for them to do the damage they do, pretty much leaves them open to be 1-2 shotted from various other skills in the game. Then when you compare the scenarios this type of build might be useful, it still pales in comparison to other classes damage and utility.
If anything, the LB damage should be buffed. Rapid fire should remain as is, barrage however needs it’s damage increased and animation time decreased.
For me personally, whose mained a ranger for quite some time, still is flirting with the idea of going back to my elementalist or guardian because one still does far superior damage while the other has far superior utility.
The Rangers need to be good at something, let it be doing single target burst damage.
Rangers won’t be nerfed, they still need to be buffed to be brought on par with other classes. The LB alone needs a solid 50% damage buff.
There is nothing OP about the LB currently. It’s still weak compared to other class’s options. If anything, the LB needs at minimum a 50% damage buff.
Played my Ranger for the 1st time last night in quite some time, and while they’re stronger, they are still no where even close to being on par with other classes. If anyone is having trouble beating them, it’s a L2P issue.
John, would it be possible to open up a neighboring instance of WvW, maybe 1 map perhaps (like EBG), where some of these ideas can be put to the test?
This being to see what type of impact they have on scoring and how players react to it? Possibly call it “Test EBG” or something?
Test out the popular ideas given in this thread where they won’t have an impact on WvW unless the players collectively agree it’s a good change? I mean the only real way to see how these ideas work is to see them in action.
Here is my take on it:
24 Hour Coverage:
Break the 24hr clock up into 3 parts: (12am-8am); (8am-4pm); (4pm-12am). Matches are based on points (best out of 3). Winning 1 time slot will only net you 1 point, so this alone should alleviate the servers who are stacked in 1 time slot (IE: Sea coverage)
It also wouldn’t hurt to split the actual match-up into 2 parts instead of weekly: (Fri-Sun) and (Mon-Fri)
Snowballing:
Award points for defending, holding, capturing, and killing players; then scale the points based on the disparity in population at a given time. For example, a ratio of 1:1 will yield little to no points. Ratios of 1.5:1, 2:1, 3:1 etc.. will yield far larger points for completing the above objectives if your severely outnumbered.
Stagnation:
Add WvW themed quests. Gw2 is largely based on quests so why not add WvW quests: capturing, defending, killing, etc.. Have the quests award points upon completion and the points scale (like above) based on the population of the map. Enemies can’t see your quests, nor can you see theirs (unless there is a spy of course). Would be nice if rewards were tacked to these quests seeing as WvW rewards are abysmal at best.
Now as far as seeing the same servers week after week; I’m afraid the only real solution to that is getting rid of the servers and have players join 1 of 3 factions. There would always be enough players involve to fully populate at least 2 instances of each map (total of 8 maps). Players just have to abandon the whole “server pride” idea and just live with the fact it’s a hindrance.
You can’t leave players on their own accord to balance the servers out (even though it’d be quite simple to do with a little organization). It’s been 2 years and they would have done it by now. You have to take the heavy handed approach and do it for them.
(edited by DeadlySynz.3471)
Players are just going to have to accept the fact that the communities as they know currently will have to end and new ones need to form in whatever format Anet decides to put forward.
Players don’t have to accept anything. This is a recreational activity. They can simply stop playing and/or go play another game.
Yes they are going to have to accept it one way or another if the population balance is to be fixed. Keeping the populations as is, aka, keeping the communities together doesn’t work. As you said though, maybe some of these players should find another game.. mainly the ones holding onto server pride. They are basically the ones holding things back.
Interesting idea, or at least the way I’m thinking of it..
Server survivor:
Keep the matches relatively short (maybe 2 days max). The server with the biggest point spread between them and 1st place (in their match-up), gets knocked out. Those players can now in-turn join another server.
Looking at the servers now, Magguma has the largest point spread, so their server would then get the ax for the time being. So they (if they wish) can jump servers free of charge.
Rinse and repeat, do this every 2 days until 1 server is left standing. This should take roughly 10-12 weeks. At the end of the tournament; all players are returned to their home server.
This could work; if anything, it would test the whole server merge idea, and just exactly how many players it would take to fully fill servers before the que’s become ridiculous. It also isn’t permanent as players would return to their home server.
I’d be willing to give this a go.
People crying about population imbalances are probably just
…too poor to transfer to another server.
And still waiting to hear a good reason why any server should merge. All merging (or alliances, which is just another word for server merge) does is temporarily spread players around while destroying established communities. Then soon after, selfish players who only care about rewards will stack on whatever server/alliance/battlegroup will give them the most reward, meaning the server merge has done nothing and has actually made things worse.
Some people like the play style that happens at lower tiers, some like the play style in higher tiers. Why destroy that for nothing? The way things are now are not perfect, things could be better, but don’t make things worse just because some people can’t afford to transfer to a server that caters to their tastes.
This is part of the problem on what’s holding things back, sense of community or pride. This needs to be abandoned before things move forward. Even if more players abandon 1 server and move to another, it hurts both communities.
Players are just going to have to accept the fact that the communities as they know currently will have to end and new ones need to form in whatever format Anet decides to put forward.
With that said, I wish John would update the original post to reflect some of the more popular ideas here so us players can debate over them. 23 pages is a lot to siphon through now.. considering some people have exceptionally long posts.
Anet not only needs to put forth something that will keep current players engaged, but will entice old players to come back while also enticing new players to join.
^ also agreed! It’s too stale at the moment to enjoy. I came back for all of about 2 days before I got bored again.
This is how Alliance, aka guilds, aka factions, should work, at least IMO. This will also include “overflow” style maps.
First
Separate the matches into 3 match-ups throughout the day (12-8, 8-4, 4-Midnight). There is a PPT ticker for each time slot. Each time slot constitutes a “point”. For a team (alliance) to win, they have to win 2 out of 3 time slots. This stops those with a massive coverage advantage during a given time slot. The only way for an alliance to win is to have strong coverage through all 3 slots. Massive SEA coverage will no longer work.
Advantages – Strong coverage in one area no longer works
Disadvantages- ?
Second
Cap the amount of players per map to say 70ish. This is more so to help control lag. There will also be “overflow” maps which become available once that particular map gets close to capping. The “overflow” maps will also count towards PPT, as long as, there is at least 25 people per side. I think there would be enough players at any given time to fill all maps 2 times over
Advantages – No more ques & not likely to have population imbalances any longer
Disadvantages – Might not work for players who like small populated maps
Third
Introduce a new set of siege and achievements native to each alliance so it gives achievement hunters something to work towards. Make the achievements more in-line, unlike the current WvW achievements.
Fourth
Add some sort of dynamic questing schedule inside based on the current map conditions. Gw2 is built a lot around questing, so why not add WvW specific questing based on what’s going on the map at any given time. Completing the quests awards additional PPT. WvW specific questing would be things like capturing objectives or killing “X” number of players of each alliance.
I personally am in favor of WvW being separated into 3 alliances. There are more than enough servers to handle the overflow style maps.
Basically once say EB 1 is qued (or close to qued), EB 2 opens up for players to join, and so and so on. Once EB 2 gets enough players on each side (say 20 per side), the PPT score will tick), anything below a certain number, the score doesn’t tick.
If this were done, I personally think there would be enough players logged on at any given time to que each map 2x over.
Why don’t we approach it from a different angle, if you were to design WvW from the ground up, how would it function?
If you were to design it from from scratch, how exactly should it function so we avoid:
- Population Imbalances
- Over-Zerging
- Siege Trolls
- Skill Lag
How could WvW possibly be done to avoid these things? I mention these because they seem to be ongoing problems that warrant thread creation.
Maybe if a decent answer is given, maybe Anet can work from that. We have to keep in mind though; not everyone will be happy, but at least the majority of us need to be.
Perhaps just remove the PPT all together and reward score for kills and captures only. Then have the score dynamically reflect the amount of people (or lack there of on the map).
For example, having 100 on the map vs 30. The side with 100 has their points per kill/capture reduced 70% while the side with 30 has their points increased 70%.
Now this doesn’t directly affect the coverage/population issue, but what it might do is indirectly force players/guilds who specifically play for score to seek out another server where their efforts are better tallied. For example, a server with strong OCX coverage on maps with little to no presence will pretty much give them nothing in terms of score.
Sure they can play, upgrade, and siege everything up if they choose, but score wise, it will have little to no bearing on the overall score.
IMO there are only really 2 solutions.
1
Merge or create WvW based on guild vs guild or faction vs faction. It’d operate the same way it does now, but allow players to pick one of 3 sides whenever they go into WvW. With 3 borderlands, this shouldn’t be an issue. There can be multiple instances of each map, where a new one opens up when the previous one is full. My guess is, there will always be at least 1-2 full maps at any given time. Conversely, there will always be 1-2 low population or dead maps for those players who prefer it. This also makes it easier for GvG to occur as they can all head to whatever map is the most vacant.
Give achievements based on each faction, and were good to go. Not sure if this is within their scope of development though.
2
The quicker, easier, and less desirable solution is to just lower the map population to 40 or 50. Players will just have to make the choice to either que or leave to a more vacant server. The only issue behind this some guilds being able to field that many players. This again is few and far between, so for the greater of good, this would still work out in the long run.
(edited by DeadlySynz.3471)
Here is a system; allow commanders to pack up siege. Stick it in as an ability after the siege ability that becomes in invulnerable momentarily once it’s deployed.
Packing up siege doesn’t have to be quick, it could take 20-30 seconds per piece. This would also greatly benefit commanders on the battle field who go through siege faster than water.
Even better that the commander can see who deployed each piece of siege, so that way if they see vast amount of flame rams where they shouldn’t be; a simple report and screen shot should be enough to send the siege troller packing for good.
When it comes to WvW, the groups (big or small) whom are willing to stand in the red circles more will always lose. Doesn’t matter how skilled they are.
The only real skill or challenge I think falls on the commanders.. knowing when and where to strike, and knowing when and where to back down.
Well the in fact to eliminate coverage issues is to merge the servers; however, given there is a PvE population to think about, Anet cant do it.
This is a player issue, and if they want balance, they need to collectively get together and merge themselves on a few servers to strike balance.
It’s not so much servers are tanking, but more so Commanders/Guilds taking a break before the tournament starts.
For me personally, I’m not going to spend 2hrs a night online now when I’ll probably be spending 4+ every night once it’s on. People get burned out.
The best part about it is, you look like you got a green and a rare for hitting that rank lol.. loot at it’s best. Congrats btw
The PvE population don’t matter anymore for servers, they don’t exist in PvE anymore with the MegaServers.
That’s the problem right there.
Anet removed the servers in PvE because there wasn’t enough people AT ALL to keep the servers alive (there was maybe 6/7 servers with enough population for that), it’s worse in WvW but they kept the servers there when they know there isn’t enough people to keep them alive.
Either way, then it should be even that much easier for players to collectively merge themselves on 9 or so servers
You know, players could just collectively agree to merge themselves on servers.
I think currently there is enough population to probably max out kitten T3 (9 servers). By max out I mean have good coverage 24/7. Why doesn’t everyone who wants to be merged & and wants even competition just systematically merge themselves together?
Those that don’t want to merge, stay where you are in what’s probably going to be a dead zone. This could work out to your advantage if roaming and small group play is your thing without having to worry about blobs.
Highly doubt this would occur before Season 3, but if everyone wants an even and interesting match-ups, create a thread, keep tabs on where all the guilds are and their primary time slots and see where the coverage lacks and go from there. If done correctly, it probably could be hammered out in a couple weeks time.
Anet won’t merge the servers, because there is an entire PvE population to take into account.
For those asking for more balanced matches I challenge you to come up with a idea that will 100% work in another thread. This includes keeping in mind the following.
1.) Not just a 1-2 hour game but something that is about a week long.
2.) Something that will not drive the population though the roof.
3.) Allow a maximum of 200-300 players to participate at any given period of time.
4.) Something that will not develop large queues.
5.) Something that will not turn into exactly what you are upset about. Stacking on the winning team.
6.) Something that will get pride in a chosen faction and allow friends to play together.I think you will find it is no so easy to do this.
My only concern is how hard the meta will be. A lot of players do not have a extensive period of time to play each week. Already some will be left out due to school/vacation/other.
Faction vs Faction vs Faction or Guild vs Guild vs Guild (or whatever you wan’t to call it).
We already have 3 factions in the game now and 3 borderlands (how convenient), spread the population across the 3 factions so the numbers are a close as possible. Now create multiple instances of each map and additional instances of each map are only available once the previous map is nearly filled from each side. This should be very easy for friends and guilds to align together.
Split the match up into 3 separate PPT systems (best score out of 3 at the end, how many time slots did the faction win). Time frames: Midnight to 8, 8 to 4, and 4 to midnight. That way a server heavily stacked in one time slot does not ensure victory, only solid 24 hour coverage does. Keep the match a week long, and it’s best out of 3.
There should be no ques due to new maps opening up once others become close to being full. Very difficult to stack a faction when the numbers are relatively even, plus the addition of the PPT split into 3 time slots negates the effectiveness of stacking as it’ll be almost impossible to tell where coverage lacks.
If they make it faction vs faction (though I like the sound of Guild vs Guild better), they could create a whole new set of items and siege unique to the particular guild, along with a set of achievements and skins.
I think that about covers it.
Now they they’ve announced the tournament, they should lock the servers down now to prevent any transfers. It shouldn’t affect PvE anyway because of the mega server system.
I don’t know what the problem is; nearly all towers that get taken are taken before the enemy even knows their gone. In case people forgot, 2-4 superior rams take down doors faster than the enemy can react.
There is also nothing stopping attacking forces to use catas or trebs completely out of of the 1200 range as well. What this does is force defenders to come out of their towers now to actually do something instead of sitting pretty on their AC’s.
There are only 2 real problems that are going to become of this:
1) As others have mentioned, hurts small groups.. drastically
2) Hackers; our beloved glitchers could cause severe problems with these. One person could literally stop an entire zerg by being untouchable under the ground disabling siege.
First off let’s get this clear, DR hasn’t bought out any guild. We only offer to help with gold but we dont pay full transfers. Thats why the guilds that ask for us to bid for their services or demand we pay their transfers we turn them down. And only 2 of the guilds that came can field anywhere near 30 nonetheless 40. Most of the guilds we’ve gotten are 10 people at most. A couple of them have merged but we didnt get 10 guilds fielding 40 each.
OP, You do realize getting all these guilds doesnt guarantee anything, I wouldnt be surprised if we get a beating in T4. Bronze was pretty much dead before all this happened, which is why this happened. Most of the guilds we’ve gotten are from bronze servers who wanted something new and not dead match ups every week and want to see what it’s like at the top. You can also blame your own server for outnumbering and blobbing down every other server for 20 straight weeks. (im assuming you are from that server)
The game is dieing, and unless this new September update brings something major to the table for WvW, you gotta adapt for your server to be successful and stay alive, and that’s exactly what we did.
“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.
In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment.” -Darwin
This is what I don’t understand, why is anyone on your server wasting money to help bring people over? What are you guys really getting out of it? The only real reason I can see for even bothering to help transfer people is if there is some sort of collective merge going on to help round out the top 6 servers so the competition is even.
Right now bringing in an influx of players to 1 server does absolutely nothing except waste your own gold and bring sheer boredom to the incoming guilds who will probably be subjected to maps with nothing to do.
I wonder if players ever really thought to organize themselves.. collectively. It’d probably take a month or 2 to iron out, but how hard can it be to get a giant list going on here to see where the numbers fall?
Have a list showing:
Server Name:
Guild: Total Numbers
Time slot primarily played
Average guild run size
Average length of run
Create something like this and everyone can see where the numbers are needed. Take into consideration the 100 man limit on each map then place ourselves accordingly. Do this and we may find we’d have 3 fairly competitive tiers, where we actually may move up and down more frequently instead of staying one tier for weeks on end.
Just a thought as Anet won’t seem to do anything, so take it upon ourselves to balance the Tiers out.
who cares where the guilds move. If you dun like how your server is doing and there is no way you wanna drop a tier – TRANSFER.
It can be done FREE OF CHARGE. Just play some dungeon games/sell T5 and T6 mats on TP. BAM, you get the gold you need, BAM you transfer to happier place.
Or… just maybe you can recruit inside your server to up your WvW numbers. Some people take the easy way out and don’t realize there are other options than just abandoning your server. But I won’t neglect to mention that Anet made it harder to recruit with the megaserver mess we’re currently in.
Exactly what I mean about no server pride/loyalty. To each their own.
Well JQ looks like their hurting for numbers compared to the other 2 servers in T1, perhaps they should start pillaging Crystal Desert’s guilds as they seem to have an abundance in that tier.
Someone should pass on the memo to Anet that it’s badges of honor people have an abundance of.. not gold (especially to WvW players).
I can understand the 300G to unlock an account bound tag, but once it’s unlocked, the option should open up for commanders to use our “next to useless badges of honor” for additional colors
Looking at the rankings I’m racking my brain trying to figure out what server your talking about. I’m noticing 2 that are placing where it seems they shouldn’t be.
Aside from that, I have no idea why anyone would transfer to a situation to drastically outnumber another server.
Talking to the Server buying guilds – Why would you possibly do that right now? What’s there to gain? Do you like running around on a WvW map when everything is your color? I havn’t been in WvW for over a month, is there a S3 coming that I’m not aware of?
Talking to guilds who are transferring – Why go to a server where you’ll clearly have nothing to do except stand around picking your nose in the starting area because you own everything on the map?
People baffle me sometimes; psychology of the brain.. trying to figure out why people do what they do when all reasonable (and rational) options for their actions are exhausted.
From the sounds of it (from what I’ve read), it looks like there are already people that are finished with the new content.. How long has it been out, a few hours?
Is that why match-up is even this week? Nobody can get into neighboring borderlands?
I wonder what would happen if we turned this into a match-up thread.. would it be closed then?
I to believe that it’s trying to drum up the hype, but I think it might be because other games are slated to be released soon (like Archerage); though that game is turning out to be a pay to win disaster so I don’t think they’ll have to worry about it.
In all honesty though, they obviously aren’t asking for them to sit and watch over popcorn, they wan’t them to showcase the game for some purpose. It’s my personal opinion that the community should not comply with it given they have essentially neglected a lot of what the community has been telling them and asking for.
You scratch our back, we scratch yours.
Probably a year too late with this request, all the good WvW videos left with the guilds who left the game months ago.
How about you log in once every 2 weeks, but DON’T play the content, do this for 1 year. It should feel like an expansion then.
Except it isn’t an expansion..
Take the entire cycle of LS season 1 and compare that to a general expansion, they are incomparable. It would probably take 10+ LS seasons to even scrape the bottom of the barrel of what can be considered an expansion.
Im surprised, usually mods encourage you to use old threads, not create new topics. What they should do (as most won’t even get that memo) is to just disable comments on the threads after 30 days.
Due to the lack of people running around at the moment, I think it’s highly unlikely to see garrison flips.
Karma trains on friday could work, as long as, the train is the borderland that you need. I’ve never come across multiple trains on multiple borderlands, though some do occasionally switch maps while the other catches up. Aside from that, your only other option would be to transfer.
It’s just bad design, but it’s not just related to Gw2, it’s pretty much every game out there at the moment, and pretty much every one in the past few years. Most games now a days seem to focus more on the cash shop than on the player experience.
I find a hidden cave in gw2 and I don’t go in. It’s not really hidden as I have 100% map exploration, I’ve already been in and there is absolutely no reason for me to go back. Nothing drops of value, I’m better of served spending time in the neglected WvW or EoTM karma training for rewards. Even that is beyond dull at the moment.
Looks like I was right, exactly 7 out of the 8 matches were decided on the weekend, so yes, PPT is in fact broken.
WvW is the end game, and well PvP as well, I wish they would just treat it as such. They are the only game mode where things dynamically change each time you log on.
PvE on the other hand, pretty much ends once you’ve completed the map (like living story). There is only so much you can do.. explore the map, complete the achievements, then what?
I honestly don’t see how they can squeeze more money out of living story content than they could from WvW/guild content if they really put their mind to it.
I figure the opinions will be split on this but I fall under the “wanting an expansion pack” crowd.
I don’t like these minuscule updates; the maps are dead in a weeks time and many of the achievements aren’t doable after that.
Also, at this point in time, don’t expect an expansion. At most one should take is 3 years after the release date. If they havn’t started one now, it won’t be released by the 3rd anniversary. By that time most people fed up with the LS will have been long gone by that point.
To clarify, if an expansion were to come, it’d have to actually address the end game content (WvW or PvP), not adding 1 or 2 maps with new quests because that won’t fly. People will be done in 1 or 2 weeks (as many have claimed, and I agree)
(edited by DeadlySynz.3471)
AP is not a measure of skill, but a measure of how much time someone has on their hands. Something that you probably do not want to brag about.
Here is how I look at this:
A new player coming into Gw2, given the current state of the game and all their changes, including the state of PvP and WvW, what do you think their reaction will be?
I’ll tell you, as I recently took a new class through the game; basically how I did it when I first started.
- Most maps were largely empty
- The new LS area was difficult to get to, when I did, it was largely empty and events were not doable because of it
- Cant find a decent group for any dungeons. When I do find a group, people want warriors
- WvW is largely empty (on T1), figured I could level up there as I hate EoTM, sadly I was mistaken
- The trait system seems really restrictive at the moment, given you can’t put points into anything until a certain level
- Unlocking abilities also seems difficult for two reasons: 1) Nobody is on the map to help, and 2) The area might be on the other side of Tyria from where I started. I’m a new player, I don’t have the gold to purchase the books because not much of it seems to drop (were things nerfed at some point)
- I don’t touch PvP, but from what I’ve heard, it needs a lot of work
For a new player coming in, aside from the beautiful graphics and sound, what else could I possibly see as a positive in the game. Large amounts of it seem unplayable at the moment due to the lack of players.
The Living story doesn’t fix this; hell, I can’t even do the events because there isn’t enough people around. It seems only fitting to draw people back that an expansion is needed to give the areas that need addressing, and overhaul.
Expansions can take up to 3yrs to release, WoW is proof of this. I’m sure Burning Crusade took well over a year to develop. If Anet isn’t currently working on what, don’t expect one by the 3rd anniversary.
T5: HoD? Say what? I’ll chalk that up to a typo.
I agree PPT as currently implemented is a joke. And it is all about the fights.
However, there has got to be some goal. Can’t just run around fighting without a point to it.
I think the simplest thing Anet could do is to put in an incentive to attack the winning server.
This would create a closer match and it would create more fights.
Indeed correct, HoD was a Typo, I meant Devonas Rest
