I’d say Thieves Guild is probably more useful overall while leveling. It’s a good cooldown to use when you need the extra DPS and CC. Daggerstorm is a great skill, but more so in WvW than elsewhere as the ability to tag in zergs and the projectile reflect are what really make it stand out.

You should have plenty of AoE options as a Thief, with either the Sword, the Shortbow or various Bleed-spaming builds, so AoE should not be an issue. That’s why Daggerstorm won’t really be such a great asset.

Downed state's Place in the game

Dee Jay.2460

I see why it exists, but its implementation is just really poor.

For PvE it’s necessary absent of healers. Having players die to every one-shot ability a boss could make would be extremely frustrating. And in PvE it works fine because Rallying can’t be abused to easily.

In PvP and WvW however it is a huge crutch to the larger team and an incredibly unfair snowballing mechanic. Finishers put the finisher at great risk and extremely vulnerable to attacks. Making 1 vs 2 or even 3 vs. 5 much, much harder to win.

In Zergs it basically means you’re immortal unless you over-extent yourself which makes it really hard for a smaller force to succeed against a larger force.

The Rallying mechanic and the general speed of revives just add further insult to injury. I mean in most cases revives are faster than standard finishers, even by just a single person. How much more broken can it be?

I can’t imagine a bigger snowballing mechanic than the current downed-state that favors…..even rewards running with as many people as possible.

But the icing on the cake and imo the biggest offense is that you can rezz dead people in the midst of combat. I mean….no wonder nobody bothers to defend when the zerg kicking in your door is virtually unkillable.

Professions Balance

I see what the OP is getting at and I kind of agree.

Warriors aren’t ridiculously overpowered in the way that they one-shot everyone, all the time. It’s just that they don’t make the same sacrifices most other classes have to.

If a Thief wants to deal serious damage, he/she will be very squish…..and I mean very.

A Guardian that wants to be a bunker will sacrifice a lot of offensive pressure in the process.

Warriors in that regard, do not make comparable trade-offs. They can have immense offensive pressure while still retaining a lot of survivability. When they do go all out bunker their damage and CC is still respectable.

To give a more tangible example:

Say all classes had 10 points to distribute between offense and defense.

A Dagger/Dagger Thief might be – 2 Defense, 8 Offense.
A Pistol/Dagger Thief in contrast might be – 8 Defense, 2 Offense

An Elementalist that goes full damage is a serious glass-cannon.

Warriors on the other hand seem to have 12 or 14 points do distribute, as opposed to the 10 most classes have.

Not every single aspect of them is OP, just the entire package combined.

World vs. Door vs. Door.

Dee Jay.2460

There are multiple factors that contribute to this.

a) small maps meaning the winner gets all. If your zerg is bigger and you have more success, you get to own the entire map. There’s no scaling of the challenge, If the enemy zerg cant stop you that won’t change not matter of you’re going for a tower or a Garrison.

b) there is no downside to holding all of the territory. Romans were spread thin throughout Europe when they conquered the world. That made the vulnerable since their resources were stretched thin. This is not the case in GW2 where a single zerg can control an entire Borderland.

c) no point in fighting if you can’t win. I don’t fault people for quitting if there’s nothing for them to gain from staying. So if you face an overpowering opponent, you stop trying.

d) The scoring system is terrible. Even a minor disadvantage at a certain hour translates into a huge scoring gap. There is no incentive to fight harder, no mechanism that enables you to “catch up”.

wvw? thief, hands down. easy mode.

For an experienced player this is true. High offense and stealth make a good combination for leveling.

But for inexperienced players…not so much. Just yesterday I met a level 80 Thief who did not know about Backstab, despite having leveled with Dagger/Dagger for the vast majority of his time. He also didn’t understand the purpose of Cloak and Dagger.

I myself didn’t learn about stealth moves until level 50 when I first leveled my Thief. I also didn’t appreciate the power of the Shadow Arts tree. The class isn’t quite as intuitive as say…a Warrior.

Pistol Whip is great in PvE and probably one of the best damage moves in the game…if you can avoid getting hit during those brief moments of vulnerability.

It works well in sPvP too, but not as well as it used to with the 1 second stun.

Adding new content and forgetting about it.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Dee Jay.2460

ANet is great about adding new content….but not good about maintaining it.

It seems like for every major update they will add a new currency, and then forget about it completely.

Case and point – the Fractals of the Mists dungeon. It was designed to be challenging content and easily expandable. It added a myriad of new currencies to the game in form of Fractal Relic and other things.

But then nothing changed about it since it’s introduction roughly a year ago. It’s stagnant and dead, like it’s been complete;y forgotten about despite having so much potential.

Laurels are in a similar boat. Originally introduced as a new currency for earning exceptional rewards it too hasn’t had anything of value added to it since its introduction.

WvW badges to be fair, did have more gear options added later on. But given how common they are in WvW and how little ways there are to spend them, they too lack a real purpose.

ANet reminds me of a child with ADD. Always adding new things but completely forgetting about features they already added and intended to build on.

That, combined with an overabundance of different currencies (is every Ascended slot going to have its own currency to achieving it?) leads me to conclude that there is a lack of vision or overall concept for what the game is supposed to become.

It’s a shame really since even a small change would be an incentive to go back and experience some of that old content.

Ballistas need a bigger niche

in WvW

Posted by: Dee Jay.2460

Dee Jay.2460

Ballistas lack a clearly defined purpose in GW2 WvW.

I believe they were originally conceived as the “anti siege, siege weapon” capable of taking out other siege weapons if need be.

But due to the positioning of defensive siege, trying to save them from the massive AoE fields spammed on to walls, the Ballista never really sees much action. This is also due to the direct-fire shot, rather than an arcing show, making it impossible to hit targets up on walls.

The range is also a weakness since Catapults and Trebuchets have a much further range and thus are much more viable “anti siege” weapons.

The only quality Ballistas have is delivering heavy burst damage to a choke-point, but even that pales in comparison to what a Superior Arrow Cart can do.

So it’s not a great “anti siege” weapon.

It’s not a great “anti personel” weapon.

It has a rather limited range.

It has a limited firing angle.

They need to be exposed if they want to hit targets.

Yeah, Ballistas suck in pretty in every imaginable way. So how can they be improved?

Well, Sword/dagger WvWvW...

Music is ok if you’re going for entertainment value and show, but if you want the footage to be at least somewhat educational you should keep the music subtle and explain some of what you do.

And I’d welcome more than just “I attacked the Warrior because he was down-leveled”. Instead something more in depth and detailed would be nice. For example: “I switch to the Mesmer because he just used his heal and I know I can tank the Warrior for a few moments thanks to Evade spam”.

50%+ of HP gone in one shot? Intended?

in WvW

Posted by: Dee Jay.2460

Dee Jay.2460

Thieves commonly Backstab for roughly 6000-7000 in WvW if built for it.

Guardian’s explosive shield thing can burst for similar damage.

Warrior 100-Blades also hits for upwards of 7000 if all swings hit. Kill shot can hit for twice that damage (but everybody uses Longbow currently).

Elementalists, through a number of proccs, can burst you down with over 12000 damage in 2 seconds.

Necromancer dumbfire builds can take off 60% or more of your HP with the single press of a button.

A well timed Mesmer burst with Shatter and Blurred Frenzy can deal over 10.000 damage.

Engineers have some insane burst, albeit I don’t know much about them.

The only class that doesn’t seem to have the ability for insane burst is the Ranger. At least I don’t know any Ranger burst builds. On the other hand they have builds that allow them to win by simply spamming auto-shot.

TL;DR – Almost every class has the ability for insane burst damage mirroring that of Thieves and Warriors. It’s just that those builds are less popular because they come at the expense of survivability.

Thieves have a certain base-line survivability thanks to stealth and Warriors….well Warriors don’t have to make trade-offs for some reason. They get to be good at everything.

The lack of Power is what really hurts most Celestial builds as power is by far the best DPS stat.

Thieves don’t scale that well with all the different stats as we don’t have an excessive amount of healing, Boons, mitigation etc.

Even with Celestial gear your survivability won’t be great and your damage probably not high enough to seriously pressure someone.

I consider Celestial gear only to be viable for Guardians and Elementalists, aka. classes that have a good deal of everything.

Yeah, I’ve wondered that too.

It used to be 150 players per side if I recall correctly (500 players in total) , at least in the EB.

But considering how few players were in our blobs recently, despite having servers queues they may have actually reduced the number of active players per map.

60 is too little though. It’s still at least 100 players per side.

blobs problem, what if

in WvW

Posted by: Dee Jay.2460

Dee Jay.2460

Maps are too small for non blobs :/

This is the core issue.

Given the size of the maps, there is no alternative to blobbing. It takes you less than 3 minutes to go anywhere on the map, so naturally you’re going to be able to defend and attack almost any point at any time.

And the only way to do that is with a blob, considering the enemy will have a blob of its own.

That said, I honestly think direct blob vs. blob clashes are the best thing about WvW, if it wasn’t for the lag. It’s certainly one of the few aspects where tactics and strategy actually matter.

It’s just the Rally mechanic that really ruins it to an extent.

If gates actually lasted more than 30 seconds against a blob then things might be more interesting. But at the current state, it’s all just about attacking because defense is so futile thanks to weak gates and easy rezzing of dead-team mates.

Some sort of reward system that interacts with the rest of the game.

I’d like to see something that can be traded or sold on the trade-post if you win a SoloQ game. Maybe something akin to grey loot bags that drop in WvW. I actually like what they did with the current rewards for Halloween as you could at least sell some of the Candy Corn you received.

Skins I think should be more of a long-term goal, where you work towards a set.

Ideally this would be specific to SPvP and not just a carbon copy of existing skins. These skins should then be usable in the rest of the game as well so you can show off if you’re good at sPvP.

Everyone knows its the smarter move from Deso but theres nothing we can do really? Or should we just stop playing and let deso 695 rest of the reset? The fact that you think that Gandara is blind to this is just silly.

You could at least refrain from pointing in our direction or thanking them for their help. Beside of that there is not much what you can do. That doesn’t change the fact that it was double teaming, but that is part of the game, as i said before. Not really something to brag or rage about, unless you are a drama queen.

Most people of Gandara (me included) dosent agree with double teaming, it takes away our hard work this week when we could had a last day with around 4k? points fighting it out on our own instead.

Double teaming means that two teams goes together but Gandara didnt ask for this and shouldnt be thankfull either.

Looks like Deso get’s to choose who places 2nd this week, so fellow Desos who do we focus, AM or Gandara?

I fancy annihilating AM :P

It would be smart to focus AM because Desolation and Gandara will lose alot of pve players before the last week and AM will still be strong in numbers.

well I guess we can be pretty proud, for being that good in a 2 vs 1 matchup

Dont overestimate yourselves. The “double teaming” will be just for today.

and yeah, i know that these are words from 2 of your players that want to speak for the whole server
so also accept that my words in previous posts are not the opinion of abaddon but just my personal one

to end all this drama and QQ i’m excited and looking forward to the 7th matchup when we all 3 meet again
and to gandara: we’ll meet again even sooner, i think it’s the 5th matchup (with aurora, your best friend

Let me make myself clear. By “double teaming” i ment that we want to “help” Gandara because we like the way they play even tho they can be jerks if they want to. Compared to abbadon’s lets blob everything! And we see better chances in winning season one if we help a little bit Gandara even tho they don’t want to.

But I have to say I like the Desolation Mouth’s new three waypoints. They look so shiny. And why do the lootbags always keep waypointing away It ain’t fair

It’s easy to talk tough when you outman everyone else by roughly 2:1.

Gandara and Abaddon fought admirably against the Desolation onslaught and it looks like Gandara came out ahead in the end because both servers seemed to focus on Abaddon for some reason. I mean they were barely ticking for 100 points throughout most of the afternoon.

Going hybrid Power/Condition damage is suboptimal.

Commit to one or the other. If you’re a Power build then get Berserker stats. Defensive stats aren’t that important on the Shortbow since it’s a naturally defensive weapon. You aren’t typically in much danger of taking damage when you switch to Shortbow.

And then you can always spam Disabling Shot.

Clusterbomb does an insane amount of damage on a Power build. Easily up to 6000 with sufficient Crit-Damage. That’s way better than having additional 10 bleed-damage ticks.

1. If you direct-damage anyone from stealth, you will be revealed.
2. You will not be revealed for applying Conditions from Stealth.
3. You will be revealed if you leave Shadow Refuge prematurely.
4. You won’t be revealed if you damage someone while performing your first Heartseeker through a smoke combo field.
5. You will be revealed if you hit something on your second or third Heartseeker.
6. You will be revealed when you use Hide in the Shadows and then perform a Heartseeker through a combo field and hit something.
7. You will be revealed if Last Refuge procs and you are dealing any form of direct damage.
8. You will be revealed if a Ranger uses “Sick’em” while you’re not in stealth.

But I guess we need to wait 2 more months “for the meta to adapt”.

Here’s the kicker. GW2 isn’t nearly complex or deep enough for classes to be able to adapt much to anything. Builds are deigned around a single trick most of the time and they do the same vs, everything.

GW1 had hundreds of skills and abilities to chose from. There were millions of combinations. GW2 isn’t nearly as deep so “adapting” isn’t really an option.

Are Minions adding to lag?

in WvW

Posted by: Dee Jay.2460

Dee Jay.2460

It is my understanding that the large number of targets affected by damage and Conditions in any given moment is what causes much of the lag.

I.e. the game does fine when it’s calculating the damage 20 vs 20 players are dealing to each other, but once we get to 50 vs. 50 the servers start to struggle as the number of damage sources and recipients grows exponentially.

I’m thinking that minions, aka. Necromancer Pets, Ranger Spirits and Pets as well as Mesmer Illusions and Phantasm probably count towards these targets as well. Given how popular the minion builds are among these classes I wouldn’t be surprised if a 50 man zerg had roughly 25-30 minions training them in combat.

I’m sure this adds to the lag.

So I was thinking, maybe the server should just stop rendering and calculating minions once its under heavy load (aka. zerg clashes). Minions don’t really matter much in large scale combat but eat a large chunk of resources.

I’m sure that taking 20-30 targets out of zergs clashes would improve performance significantly.

This is just an idea on how to tackle lag within the game.

Anything done to discourage 75-100 man Zergs?

in WvW

Posted by: Dee Jay.2460

Dee Jay.2460

There’s really not much you can do.

The WvW maps in GW2 are so small, it takes less than 3 minutes to traverse them.

Putting 500 people in such a confined space will naturally lead them to congregate as there is typically only one place of conflict per map, and that point is usually reachable in less than 60 seconds.

You see normally the advantages of having 3-way WvW is that there’s an automatic balance mechanism. Holding lots of territory is more difficult as it gives you more points of contention and more points to attack. If you want to hold everything your resources will be spread thinly.

But this is not the case in GW2 because of how tiny the maps are. Holding your entire Borderlands isn’t more difficult than holding only the North half.

It’s so tedious to see all these nerf threads. Not because they are wrong, but because Anet let these situations go on so long before addressing them.

Warrior healing signet is undermining the entertainment value of tpvp right now in a non-trivial way. Anet should nerf the signet tomorrow. If it has too extreme an effect, put it back up slightly the next day. How hard is that?

Instead they sit on these decisions forever agonising over whether they should make a minor tweak or not and let the players suffer for weeks and months.

Yep, this is the truly frustrating thing.

You’d think by all the resistance developers have to balance changes that they need to be “perfect”. Yet the changes they do make are more often than not misplaced or inadequate.

What’s so bad about mixing things up every few weeks? It’s not like any balance change made is permanent. If you overnerf something, just change it back again asap.

Because let’s be frank here. We players are right, we always are. I personally campaigned for Mug to get changed….and then 4 months later it finally was. That was 3 months longer than it needed to be.

By the rate of change to the meta you’d think that every modification needs to go through 4 different management lairs, all with their own seal of approval.

in PvP

Posted by: Dee Jay.2460

Dee Jay.2460

About half a year ago ANet increased the duration of “Revealed” (the anti-stealth debuff) to 4 seconds in sPvP only.

Now I’m not sure what it was supposed to address at the time, but things have changed significantly since then. In fact none of the currently popular Thief builds rely much on stealth at all. In some cases stealth is even counterproductive as it helps the enemy cap a node.

The thing is, having a 3 second “Reveal” in WvW and PvE vs. a 4 second “Revealed” in sPvP is extremely jarring as timing stealth moves (most notably Cloak and Dagger) becomes “internalized”.

I still find myself constantly using Cloak and Dagger prematurely in sPvP (if I need an interrupt while playing S/D) because of the different timers.

Let’s be honest here, that balance change is an extremely “inelegant” way of adressing a balance issue that is no longer relevant. So can we have it reverted please?

The skill in GW2 comes mostly from knowing other classes, what moves to dodge and reacting to your environment.

The thing with P/D is that it does none of that. It’s always the same move, against every enemy, in every situation. The slow, attrition based play style also means that you are easy to ignore (which is frankly the best way to deal with a P/D Thief) and don’t really contribute much to anything.

It was entertaining for a while, when the build was still fresh (thanks Wild Bill) but the build and play-style has not evolved at all over the past year. Seen one P/D video, seen them all.

What is this P/P Venomshare build?

I’ve come across a number of Venom share builds in tPvP recently but none of them seemed to perform all that well. The only time anyone really benefit from venoms was at the beginning of the match.

But then the venoms were gone by the time you engaged your first enemy.

Class Choice for Roaming with Thief

If you’re running with a Thief you want a class that can take a beating. Because of Thieves slippery nature people often chose alternative targets over them….i.e. you.

So running an offensive build isn’t such a good idea.

A defensive, stun-focused Warrior build could probably work quite well because Warriors have enough mobility to escape unassisted if things go bad.

But the Engineer is probably the better choice. They too can kite like hell and tanky Engineers almost never die in the hands of a good player. The icing on the cake is that since both Thieves and Engineers use Medium armor, you can make both look identical, further confusing your enemies.

There is nothing entertaining about watching Pistol/Dagger cheese singling out individuals who have very little they can do to stop you, while making no real effective contribution to overall WvW.

P/D is a one-trick pony, and while that trick is undoubtedly very effective, the build has so many fail-safes you’d have to be a toddler not to prevail.

There’s a good reason to use fast-forward and beating music while showing off P/D footage because seeing it in real time would be a bloody snooze-fest.

This is no criticism of your play-style, skill or footage. It’s just that P/D is cheese…and simple cheese as that.

Deplete adrenaline when war Bursts miss

It’s the same with Thief Stealth attacks. If they hit Aegis or get dodged they don’t de-stealth the Thief.

Kind of makes skill slightly less important.

Something is not less broken just because there is another thing that is broken too.

Yeah, just b/c the stealth + block mechanism is broken, doesn’t mean that burst skill miss mechanics are acceptable. Let’s fix ALL the broken mechanics!

I’m absolutely with you on that. I feel I was misunderstood.

My statement is one of support, not justification.

I gave in today and dumped about 50 Gold into getting my Ascended weapon. It really wasn’t “fun” and it doesn’t feel worth it either.

All crafting in this game is just such an epic grind fest with 90% of crafting materials based on the same 4 basic resources.

While I despise cooking for all the excessively complicated recipes at least it uses a variety of things from different sources. Crafting is just all about how much Wood and Ore you can stockpile.

Roughly only 10k players who solo tpvp

I don’t blame people for giving up on solo queue. I’m currently running a lose streak of 6 consecutive losses over 2 days. And not even close games…..pretty decisive ones too.

I’m no god of the arena but I win the majority of my 1v1s and know when to cap and hold etc.

But the amount of minddlessly easy classes that are currently dominating mid-tier PvP makes it impossible to prevail when not playing a class that can carry the team.

Warriors, Rangers and Necros rule mid-tier sPvP and it’s frustrating as hell seeing how easy it is for them to prevail.

Every 5th heal on my Thief will have me dodge off the edge into doom.

Displacement skills, both offensive and defensive, are absolutely broken on this map. And yet countless builds rely on them.
