The math will support a direct reduction in damage.

I’m saying from an end user point of view, that’s you and me – we won’t feel like the change in damage mitigation is worth while until 1800 toughness.

We start at 990ish toughness (so lets round it out to 1000).

At 1800 toughness lets say it’s a damage reduction of 45%.

If a thief crits us without additional toughness for 10k (happens all the time),

then at 1800 toughness they’ll crit for 5.5k

At 1500 toughness they’ll crit around 7k.

The difference between 7k and 10k is minimal when fighting a player since the damage output will generally FEEL the same due to scaling with your HP.

Example. If you have 14k HP.

If the enemy hit you for 5.5k, you can survive 3 hits. 1800 toughness

If the enemy hit you for 7k you can survive 2 hits. 1500 toughness

If the enemy hit you for 10k you can survive 2 hits. 1000 toughness

Until you hit that 1800 barrier, as a player, you’re still dying in the same amount of time.

Sorry, that doesn’t really make sense

All you need to understand is that 1800 is the sweet spot. if you’re decently below that (less than 1600 lets say), in-combat, you won’t notice a change in damage from enemies.

Not to mention the way this build is geared, you have such low HP you’re basically like an ele without the ability to get protection or regen.

I notice another little trick you pull in your videos where you are running away from people when you are near dead and using the camera to watch them behind you and then dodging backwards towards them.

I do it if it’s around corner and stuff usually, since as an asura I’m small enough that they won’t notice it. It buys me a couple important seconds.

I meant the percentage at which enemy damage is reduced won’t be noticeable by a user until around 1800.

curious how you are managing it.

Turn auto targeting off. When you want to de-target, click anywhere on-screen on something that isn’t targetable. Example: A wall, ramp, the ground, the sky.

When you click something else it’ll de-target, and if you have Auto Targeting turned off then it won’t choose a target for you.

Warriors CAN work well in high end tPvP.

But for that to be achieved we have to be coddling like little children and cared for all along the way.

Teams view that as a liability, having to hold a Warriors hand throughout a game. That’s why they don’t use Warriors as much – to many downsides to it’s very few upsides.

I feel as if Anet gets confused. Balance will come with time like all great mmos. You guys cause them to lose focus. What we need is a ranked ladder or rating system with teams that have a penalty when you leave them sort of like in wow when your team rating gets reset then we need rewards. thats just for the everyday competitive pvpers.

Ladder / rankings are already in the game.

If you lose a match your rank goes down.

If you leave a match it counts as a loss on your record.

You don’t get ranked/ratings in Hot Join.

Custom Arenas are on the back burner according to ANet.

All that’s really left to ask is to throw balancing a bone.

Chill is a broken mechanic. It’s inherently flawed since it overlaps with abilities like Cripple, and to a lesser extent Immobolize.

No idea why in this game we need 3 methods to slow a player.

Finally got around to trying this after following the thread for some time… it’s brilliant. I love the realization that I’ve strongly overthought something simple. I was always trying to combo mace stuns into a hammer switch with berserker’s stance to refil adrenaline…. it was a mess. This build works great though, I’m glad to be back in plate (seriously, screw playing mesmer anymore).

i disagree. it lets teams choose what they want to carry for them. and i like how if im carrying an orb i can choose to turn around and team fight or run. i can also manage 1v1s without being gimped just cause i have orb. also the other team has to decide if they focus me with the orb who does no dmg, or do they stop the dps classes first?

IDK to be honest, despite being 80 I don’t venture out into PvE anymore.

Since in WvW damage is inflated due to gear inconsistencies I would strive for something like:

1900 Toughness
6/6 Rune of Lyssa (this is important).

40% base crit chance

3200ish Attack

Anything else is basically just icing on the cake.

New map is innovative, no more paids (semi-step backwards, but it was for a good reason – consolidate the community).

Class balance is the biggest problem and unfortunately the sPvP team has no influence in that area.

So you’re one of the sPvP programmer on this game ? Well, do you know that a lot of people were waiting for you for ages here ?

Better late than never. I mean, these last time we didn’t see anyone who was on a direct relation with the game programming. Well, i think you shouldn’t spend your time on the forum, because wasting time reading forums means less time working on programming. Maybe someone should read for you what you need to do, it means more time for you to focus on your work : programming.

Anyway, in my opinion, what should be your focus in sPvP :

1/ Working on fixing existing bugs.
2/ Working on improvements/features on the game ( Like matchmaking, ladder, spectator mode, etc… )

For example, there was a bug on Capricorn map where we didn’t get the skirmisher point… This bug is 6 month old…

It’s not really his job to come on here and interact with players, there’s different teams designed to do that and facilitate changes that get sent to Evan.

The mere fact that he took the time to come on, to quell some fears such as ‘we aren’t being heard’ or that ‘changes aren’t happening’ means that he cares.

Should be respectful if not delighted that someone took time out of their day to interact with us – especially considering everyone moans that there’s no interaction.

Sick of 3v5, 4v5, and other unfair odds

Have you considered ‘starting’ the game one player at time?

In essence:

Team 1 has 2 players, so Team 2 is only allowed 2 players in.

If Team 1 for whatever reason can only muster in 4 players, then Team 2 is limited to 4 players. Simply provide the Team 2 captain with a form that they can select which player is ‘sitting out’.

This way both teams start even. If Team 1’s last guy eventually shows up, Team 2’s guy is given the option to join the game as well (or theres a time limit etc.).

This may not be the most elegant way to start a game where you want to keep everyone always 5v5. But if the option to quit the game or the roster etc. is causing problems maybe this is a good bandaid solution until deserter effects can be added to the game to stop people from leaving.

I’m not a huge fan of copying someone’s build, but I had to try this because I also love the play style of Hammer. Also I have come to respect Defektive’s thoughts on everything Warrior.

All I have to say is that this build really works well, even more so than it probably should on paper. "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts ", really seems to apply here.

This is also a great “core” build, meaning there is room to tweak personal preferences around it.

Prop’s Defektive( and Schwahrheit), fantastic job.

I appreciate the kind words and hope you end up liking this build as much as I do :P

[sPvP] Revitalizing PvP: Methods and Concepts

Hello all.

This thread is built to discuss two important things.

1) Low Hanging Fruit that the sPvP Developers can rapidly add on a whim.
2) Game concepts to help change the way certain sPvP specific things are played.

In regards to Low Hanging Fruit. The sPvP developers cannot change things like:
-UI Related tasks.
-Balance changes (other than bugs on a skill relevant to a PvP Map or objective).
-Art direction / Items.

Please keep your requests reasonable. Lofty goals will generally go unnoticed by the development staff simply because they are lofty goals.

Keep your explanation short and simple.


1) Low Hanging Fruit
Example of something they can (most likely) fix:
-Trident Token cost being 6 honor.

-Rocks in Spirit Watch (Blue Side, due north of the exit, up the ramp), these can be easily traversed by an orb carrier to bypass the bridges. Red Side does not have an equivalent bypass.

2) Game Concepts:
-All of the below requested are already implemented in-game one way or another. It’s simply a matter of re purposing them.
-Game timer at the top of each map. Set a team to defend and a team to attack.
The attacking team gets 30 seconds to begin capturing a point (the points bar moves).
If the bar moves, their timer is reset to 30 seconds.
-Defending team must keep enemies off a point for 30 seconds. Once that’s been accomplished they can go on the ‘attack’.
-Defending team cannot capture enemy points.

"Solo" Que

You have two separate tourny ques at this moment. One for 3 round and one for 1 round. In a blog post you guys said that they had separate matchmaking. Paid tournaments previously demonstrated that you guys have the ’’feature’’ in place to force someone to be 5 premade players to que in to the match. You also now have a ‘’join solo’’ button.

If you piece these pieces together you get:

1.Make one tournament que ‘’join solo’’ only, 1 round
2. Make the other que ‘’submit roster’’ with 5 only , 1 round

LE VOILA!
It’s okay, we can scrap the idea of duoq for now. Put that in your ’’soon’’ basket. You can do the same for the random map generator, just keep rotating maps manually the way you guys do every 2 days or something.

There. That is the solution that will allow solo players to play the game without getting stomped by teams.

So in this suggestion, people would only play as a team of 5 or by themselves. That would mean effectively disabling tournaments for people who want to play tournaments with a friend. Or two friends, or three friends, but don’t have a full team. I can’t imagine that would go over very well either.

Same utility just used in a different way. A properly spec’d and played warrior can provide the same team support an ele can. I do it all the time. In most cases I out play ele’s in both team fights and 1v1 fights (when those happen to occur).

If this was true, teams wouldn’t be bringing double ele and 0 warriors.

There are a lot of bad warriors.

There’s also a few good ones.

There is definitely a place for warriors in PvP. Most teams just don’t like them because they see the “casual GS faceroll” warrior. Show them that you are a good warrior player and they will accept you.

And if that doesn’t help, you can still faceroll PvE and buy a team with the gold you made. :P

K Pop isn’t your casual faceroll warrior. He plays with some of the top players in tPvP and know his stuff. When a player like him is about to call it quits. You listen.

I wanted to give a shout out to Defektive & Schwahrheit for making me a better warrior. They are both great warriors and know more than me imo.

I will never forget you guys and the warrior teams. Playing with you and against you is equally as fun. Always pushed me to my limit and then to the next level. Half the things I do now have been because of you guys. Just showing my appreciation.

BTW I will be running your hammer build tonight as a tribute. Today will prolly be my last day for at least a week to clear my mind.

Was it the patch that threw you off? I personally was hoping for considerably more changes. Potentially in regards to banners and a base F1 mobility attack (so we aren’t shackled to GS or Sword).

Gotta agree with Defektive here. Also, his build is also just brutal for locking down an orb carrier when needed.

I’m also liking longbow builds on this map because of numerous terrain advantages and the root, which counters RTL.

Here’s a question though- Warhorn’s convert conditions to boons trait: Is that self or group applied? That might be an alternative to shout healing to try and fill a group support role.

I believe it’s self. But keep in mind that while Warrior Condi removal is really bad, thats not the same case for other classes. I originally made the build running the warhorn condi removal and quickly found that between Lyssa and Sig of Stamina, it wasn’t really needed and didnt provide enough substantial change to the gameplay to warrant losing either +12% damage.

Defektive, thanks for your good work BUT warrior sucks in every respect. I run your build in tPvP and hotjoin, without a good team i was kitten in seconds. The new map is – from the viewpoint of a warrior – just a kinda horror-movie. You´ll be outclassed by simply positioning.

No matter what build you are you’re going to get dumped on by the enemy team if you don’t have competent teammates. This goes for every class but say ele’s and mesmers.

I love the new map, and have been very successful on it – as a Warrior.

I provide important teamfight capabilities (almost 16 seconds of locking down an enemy) + 7k bursts of damage + high mobility. I can protect or stop an orb with AoE immobolizers, cripples, AoE stuns etc.

Warriors need help for sure, but this new map gave us more opportunities to shine.

Overall though, I think fast-travel skills are just fine with the Orb.

The new map was the key to this patch. It’s opened up more viable builds. It’s things like new maps with new mechanics that’ll change the landscape, coupled with incremental updates to existing mechanics (like Warrior banners).

I’ve been running Hammer in tPvP and absolutely love it on the new map for point/orb denial, teamfights, and running the orb. Up until now, Hammer has been difficult to be useful in tPvP.

I don’t see more viable builds. I see the old kitten abused builds still and the ones with super mobility are dominating without a doubt. Rtl should either drop the orb or, for the sake of lyssa, be affect by movement speed skills. Such a broken skill to be invulnerable and dash away to safety.

Same with invulnerable skills with dropping the orb(which also should not be allowed to down people but thats another discussion)

Hammer Warrior is far more viable now due to Spirit Watch than it was in all the other maps. I’ve seen some neat new engineer builds as well that focus on denying the enemy the ability to basically function as a player.

I’ve seen guardians transition away from point defenders and into orb carriers due to their inherent toughness, healing, blocking and invul skills.

All these things add up to a new meta, which in turn pushes new builds.

Edit: I would like to add that the OP assumed that you can cure conditions on your teammates. Only shake it off does that, and it’s only 1 condition. The rune setup that does “Shouts remove conditions” only applies to you, not your teammates.

Patch Notes
“Updated the Superior Rune of the Soldier’s sixth bonus to properly remove a condition from allies affected by the shout.”

Pretty sure that was fixed. Was working for our guardian last night.

Oh then maybe so. Just consider that most other classes have far more ways to remove condis consistently, that bringing more condi removal is just overlap and a waste.

And the ability to remove 3-4 conditions from teammates is grossly overshadowed by balanced stance, signet of stamina, frenzy and bulls charge.

After all that, factor in how going Shouts has completely crippled your damage output.

So now you are a ‘wannabe’ bunker, with a slow attack speed wet noodle, that can easily get CC’d, that also does negligible aoe healing.

A team would just be better off bringing a bunker ele with its higher AoE healing, higher uptime, more damage mitigation methods, and higher maneuverability + better damage than shout builds, and passive methods to remove condi’s.

There are a handful of skills across all professions that cover the speed/distance as RTL. I reference RTL cuz I’m an Ele and I’m not as familiar with the others. The original sentiment stands though, these MASSIVE distance-jump abilities should be adjusted for this map. When someone with these abilities has the orb and is within sight of the capture point, there is next to nothing that can be done to stop them.

It’s my opinion that this breaks the map. Swiftness gets negated while holding orb, Mesmer port gets negated, there are probably a couple more that are negated as well that I don’t know about… so my point is: What good reason is there not to restrict any and all enhanced movement abilities while holding the orb? It seems very half-kittened to me.

Ya that’s true, I had 4 people training me yesterday and I just did a 1200 leap into the point for a cap.

Is Join Solo button working as intended?

There is current a bug with the ‘Join Solo’ button where it does not properly submit your roster during times of high latency. We intend on hotfixing this in our next patch.

Evan, I know this seems like an out of place question:

Who would I attempt to contact in regards to Warrior class changes?

Example: If I wanted to know if anything was potentially in the pipeline for Banner changes etc.

Because after RTL you can lock down an ele pretty easily with immobolizers and knockbacks. Every tPvP game I’ve played that an enemy ele has ran it has lost the Orb.

Also, other classes have strong distance abilities.

I’ve been running Hammer/Sword-Warhorn, and if I have the orb I can actually Sword#2(Leap) over the bridges, go almost as far as RTL and it only has a 10sec cd not a 25.

Not to mention last night we used a Guardian (davinci) to run the orb and that felt more solid than an ele.

The only classes I feel that are at a disadvantage are Engineers and Necros since they lack gap closing mechanics.

Spirit Watch’s new mechanics will most definitely change the ‘meta’. The next step from ArenaNet are Ladder brackets visible to the public, new maps with new mechanics and have them be selected randomly per tournament.

Not even engineers are at much disadvantage here. I usually take oil slick for this map and elixir r. dodge 4 times for faster movement, use double speed toolbelt skill (which lasts five seconds) and It’ll put me a good distance from a point.

Well there you have it. Only solidifies my opinion that RTL isn’t as unbalanced as some people have made it out to be.

lol no..because the classes on the lowest health bracket will heal for less in addition to starting to a lower initial health the fight.Then vitality will become the new bunkering stat instead of toughness/healing power and new bunkers will emerged on the graves of the old ones.

he mentioned the % being higher or lower depending on class / circumstance.

so ele’s could have a 70% heal etc.

There’s a number of reasons.

Mostly that shout healing is so minimal it’s basically not worth investing to heavily in – they scale horribly.

Then there’s the fact that you removed your option for Balanced Stance which is a necessary utility against any good team.

Then you invest so heavily in them trait wise, you’re basically walking around with sub par healing, easily CC-able and can’t do much else worth much of anything.


Overall, shout healing has been tried a number of times over the past 6 months, and everytime it has fallen flat exceptionally fast. It’s ok for HotJoins and bad tPvP teams, but once you fight competent teams it’s just so so bad.

I also prefer warhorn over shield and I have a great example of this. Yesterday night Hiba, Davinci and I were in a teamfight against Fuszion / Ruinz / Kontrol (I think).

Ruinz casted entangled, it hit all of us. I swapped out warhorn and got all of us out of his immobolize in under a second – allowing us to continue the teamfight and basically negating an elite.

Edit: I would like to add that the OP assumed that you can cure conditions on your teammates. Only shake it off does that, and it’s only 1 condition. The rune setup that does “Shouts remove conditions” only applies to you, not your teammates.

Finally some people seeing how other classes can do the same as RTL, the only problem is that 90% of the eles around use RTL since thats the only viable build while most of the other classes are either glass cannon useless builds or bunkers with only survival and no mobility at all but they can achieve the same results as RTL changing their spec.

False, RTL is the only widely known viable build, according to the ranger forums trapper and BM bunker are the only viable builds yet i run neither of those and am doing quite fantastically with my Chill Build. Not to mention i play an ele as well and use a staff and conjures and it’s been doing significantly better than i expected it to, then again i’m not the best ele out there so it may be a lot more viable than i can pull it off.

Sincerely: I can’t wait to see you people with these non-trap ranger builds and non-RTL builds etc. in High End tPvP.

There’s like 15-20 of us who just constantly fight each other because (I think) the MMR has thrown us way out ahead.

I just saved you the hassle of learning that shouts are bad and giving you a much more refined build.

I run hammer/sword-warhorn in tPvP now and it works really well if you’re with a team of competent players.
