We totally agree! We’re working on another upcoming PvP stuff update that’ll be coming out shortly once we’ve verified everything is working correctly.

We’ve actually posted in a number of threads here (now no longer on the front page) detailing what our plans are in the near future for SPvP, as well as posted a blog post that summarizes what’s coming shortly, and the build note preview on paid tournaments for the Halloween update. We’ll be going into more detail specific about competitive pvp next week on the blog including screenshots and feature descriptions, and of course will continue to update in these forums as well.

Transparency in every part of the game is very important to us, and I think you’ll be thrilled so see how quickly new features for pvp come rolling online over the next few months. This is a huge focus for us, and a community and part of the game we take very seriously, and we’ll strive to keep making sure you all know what we’ve got planned, and where we’re taking the game to reach its ultimate long term goals.

The mere mention of a PvP update before the Halloween patch is relieving.
However, one area of my post describes being more open with upcoming changes.

In regards to your response:

What does this entail?
-Balance to classes? If so, which?
-Map changes? (ex. Raid of the Cap is widely considered a bad map)
-Changes to weapons and skills? If so, which classes and why?

Hello.

I spend a good deal of my free time conjuring up Warrior Builds. Making Warrior videos, and doing things most active players do: Find new and creative ways to be successful at sPvP.

Concerns:

One of the biggest concerns I have to the long term success of this game is Transparency from the GW2 sPvP Dev team to the sPvP Community.

While I believe the Devs have the greatest intentions of creating a meaningful, interesting and successful PvP experience (hey they want their game to succeed right?) I also have noticed there isn’t much community interaction.

On these message boards we rarely get straight responses. More often than not we have threads full of complaints / worry, with very little in reassurance. Generally, we receive information in the form of game-wide announcements (news). But this news gives us broad strokes of concepts that will be debuting in the near future.

Concepts aren’t what the community yearns for. The community is extremely interested in expanding the BREADTH of game play available, not the depth.

Examples of Breadth:
-More interesting weapon mechanics giving way to a larger diversity of builds.
-More interesting maps / map types giving way to a larger diversity of sPvP game types.

Examples of Depth:
-Paid Tournaments using the same maps.
-Paid servers using the same maps / gametypes.

While stat tracking, Paid tournaments and other things are fantastic towards the eventual growth of the game, many people are burning out from lack of concepts/diversity and general game types.

Transparency is paramount to success:
If there is more at play here that we aren’t being told, such as:
-Profession balance / weapon reworks and skill changes
Yet we aren’t being told about them. I implore ArenaNet to give us headway so we know that our thoughts are heard.

Until then, most of these sub-forums will be filled with the following thread subjects:
-Nerf X
-Why is X team composition so OP
-Where are the other gametypes?

With some Transparency I think we all would be a little more at ease with the direction the game is going.

I think we all just need a little reassurance.

That statistic about seeing the Thief 90% of the time, even if fighting somebody…
Let’s go through this again.
Stealth.
I’m not like you, feeling down and saying it’s my own fault when I get killed by a Thief who was invisible and did over 10k dmg.
I don’t think to myself, “Well, gee, that invisible Thief wouldn’t have killed me like that if I just learn to play.”
No, I say, “Well, not really much I could have done there. I couldn’t see him. Why can they do this much damage again?”
And the reason I ask this type of question and make this kind of statement is because, having played numerous other PvP games, I have never seen anything like the Thief in this game. And there’s a reason all the Thief defenders make ridiculous statements like yours.
You are not under powered.
Your skills are not terrible compared to the other classes.
You have the best defense mechanism in the game, Stealth. A lot of it.
You control the fight.

First of all, I don’t play a thief.

Secondly, stealth lasts for what, 3 seconds? This is provided that they use their heal to stealth so that you don’t see them coming in. Then they steal, cloak and dagger (which stealths), and backstab. So you’re telling me that this thief can traverse enough land in 3 seconds that you physically cannot see him coming?

Yeah, didn’t think so. In well over majority of cases you can see a thief coming and prepare for the burst. I can count on one hand the amount of times where I was like “Wow, didn’t see that coming. That was a lot of damage.” One of which actually lost us a game the other night on Kylo, so it’s not as though I’m saying the class is perfect. But to cry over and over that a glass cannon squishy class does high dmg and needs to be nerfed gets a little old after a while.

In a perfect world yes. But in-game, no. Due to serverside issues thiefs can stay stealthed for a number of seconds. we’re talking 7-10.

Help a little with axe/mace - axe/warhorn build.

You’re very squishy still with 20khps yet arn’t glass cannon enough to compensate.

Problem is shoehorning that warhorn trait takes away too much from your build imho.

You end up doing less damage, with lower hps. You also don’t carry any form of defence (ie: shield) to compensate for your lack of hps/toughness.

20k hps just doesn’t cut it basically. I’d drop the warhorn traits, put them into precision/defence for adrenal heal and gets knights jewels zerker mix to give you about 27k hps with roughly the same toughness and same crit and more attack.

You’re losing the ability to remove 1 condition with the horn every 16 seconds…honestly with the amount of conditions flying around in fights and you being in melee range to dps, that makes 0 difference in how well you do.

Maybe stack a little more toughness too because at 1200 you’re about as resilient as wet paper.

Meaning at character screen you chose what Primary Profession you would be.

By level 40 you would choose your secondary Profession.

Secondary Profession would simply unlock that professions Utilities for you to choose from.

This would add some much needed flexibility and interesting build combinations compared to what’s going around right now.

Whirling Axe does less damage than Axe #1 attack unless you’re hitting greater than 4 (real world, 5-6) people at a time.

It’s damage is bad for an attack with a cooldown.

How about when you’re in a combo field?

Never tested w/ a combo field, but the combo field needs to force twice the dmg output in order for it to break even with Axe1 DPS. But then there’s an issue of building an attack around a field.

Depends on the situation. Sometimes taking the point is more important than persuring a kill.

And Warrior is very mobility dependent so try your best to build your weapons / utilities around having at least one form of gap closer in order to keep your DPS up on the target.

Now you have a new niche.

Sounds pretty close to Sword.

Sword Focuses on Gap Closer / Cripple / Conditions.

This would be Gap Closer / Immobolize / Direct Damage

For leveling, GS is extremely effective, that’s why many people use them. Sword/Shield takes a while to kill things hence why people aren’t using it to level.

NM just saw your build.

I would drop 10 points of discipline and 20 points of Tactics.

Pick up 10 points in Strength and get V
Pick up 20 points in Defense (need that toughness), get embrace the pain and pick up something else that suits you.

Shout healing is pretty bad, especially with low +healing.

Swap out Shake it off for Balanced Stance (need stability).

I think it would fit the roll between Hammer and Greatsword.

-GS being mobility

-Hammer being control

Great Axe Burst – could be a two handed leap at a target, not a aoe effect. Leap would knockdown the target and those around them and give the war fury.

Attk1 – could be a standard slice, with the 4th hit doing a quick whirl hitting things in an aoe and applying cripple.

Attk2 – could be a leg chop that immobolizes and grants might to the warrior

Attk3 – could be an overhead axe throw that does damage and places vulnerability on all enemies in its path

Attk4 – could be a Rush to an enemy dragging your Great Axe on the ground, leaving behind it churning earth that cripples and applies bleeds to enemies that cross it. Gets to the target and does damage to an enemy / cripples.

Attk5 – could be Whirling GreatAxe that is similar to Whirling axe for 1handed Axe, but any enemy it hits becomes crippled.


Essentially, no stuns, focus on cripples/immobolizers, moderate gap close, decent damage.

Now you have a new niche.

Take the points the entire team earned at the end of the game. Average it. The average across the team is what each player receives. Toss in a 50% bonus for winning and tada!

No way that’s socialism.

Why would I want normal Joe whose sitting around twiddling his thumbs get a share of my hard earned glory?

@aleiro Let me clarify During Dagger Storm they DO take damage from meele attacks. However for the whole duration they get stability boon (can’t be stunned etc.), plus reflect all ranged attacks (including the GS 4, Bolas etc. as they count as projectiles).

As for Whirling Axe (Warrior steal skill), they gain evade for the whole duration, just like during Pistol Whip, there’s no need to dodge, unless it’s for gap closing. It’s pretty much a portable, 360 degree Pistol Whip.

I still don’t understand how a Mimic skill is better than the original. (Whirling Axe for warrior doesn’t evade, it just does damage and very little at that.)

I think the build would be fine for WvW. WvW should more likely affect your weapon choices than your trait choices. The only different being if you went wanted to do shout healing or dare I say it, banners. But overall I think that build is a decent baseline for you to tweak.

But don’t take my word for it since I rarely WvW.

Well, in sPvP if you’re not taking toughness amulets you’re going to be sitting well below 1800.

And you only have 2 choices (I think, not ingame atm to check)
One is Toughness and +healing
The other is power, tough, vit.

I believe in sPvP you can only barely break around 2100 toughness tops.

I run 30 in defense +300 toughness and Soldiers amulet +569ish toughness. If I was to go all out, I would only be able to add on another 200ish toughness from pure runes and a Solider Jewel.

So 1800 out of a 2100 cap is still rather tanky.

If you bring enough dmg mitigators like knockbacks, vigor (sig of stamina), and know enemy skill timings then staying alive with 1800 toughness against 2-3 opponents is very doable.

And many bunker classes have ways to gain passive Protection (-33% dmg) so that they dont have to go all out toughness but rather sit around that 1800 mark.

Edit:

Glass in my mind is anything between 900-1400 toughness. Basically, no toughness.

Maybe something like this:

And then stick in Ogre runes so that you gain +4% dmg and +3% crit dmg and rock dog (sucker hits like a truck).

You’ll be relatively tanky around 24k hp, 1800 toughness, 40% crit with signet of rage up, heavy bleed dmg but not to much that it kittens you against condition removal.
+16% dmg, Adren on getting hit (since you have high toughness/hp and a shield).

Tbh I’m not a big rifle guy, and I have a bleed build that I don’t use anymore. But this is sorta the way I’d go. I’m also partial to staying around 1800 toughness because I feel like a wet noodle below that.

Steady weapons (sPvP), got enough power so that Axe #1 hits for 100 damage (consistently swung to make sure it wasn’t a fluke).

50 attacks at full endurance – 0% dmg increase (100 dmg per hit)
Did 50 attacks after 1 dodge roll. – 2.3% dmg increase (102/103 dmg, more often 102).
50 attacks after 2 dodge rolls – same outcome.

Edit: I’m a stickler for getting the most efficiency out of everything I do (I’m a lean six sigma PM irl), so I spend a lot of time sitting around swinging target dummies in HOTM.

I saw this post at work on my phone and wanted to reply earlier but I was stuck in meetings most of the day. So I apologize for the late response.

Beating thieves that attack in melee range is much easier than killing shortbow / teleport’s. Your best chance of success are five. specific things.

1) Hammer F1 – After they stealth, wait 1.5/2 seconds, then use the F1 directly on your character. 90% of the time if they are going to attack you they will get hit. Not only will it stun them, but they’ll come out of stealth stunned.

2) Apply Slows/Immobolize as often as possible – HS range is severely depleted when slowed, simply slow and dodge away. They won’t be able to catch up to you and if they spam HS to try to catch you then their init goes to waste and that’s X many less HS you have to worry about.

3) Hammer #4 – The attack doesn’t hit as soon as the cast is done, it hits as your character turns. I’ve found that even if they are HS spamming right on top of me, as they jump around they are going to get hit by the swing as it spins. Just follow up with stuns and if they are a burst build they’ll die in the combo.

4) Spam attack thin air – Killed way to many thieves just auto attacking thin air in the general direction I assume they can be.

5) Put your back to a wall – This diminishes the surface area they are going to attack you from. It also protects you from backstab.

Overall: It’s really a timing thing. Once you get the timing of HS down you’ll be able to land more and more stuns/immobolizers.

In regards to the trade off.
Frenzy right now, is so important towards the overall Warrior Meta. Unfortunately it’s one of the few skills that make us viable for tPvP because its on demand burst. If I didn’t need frenzy because I could do other things to make up for it, then I would definitly expand into other utilities like FGJ or Fear Me. But right now its such a big dps increase that I have to use it.

I think both builds have viability. Here’s my train of thought on this subject.
I base my builds off of their ability to increase my effectiveness in tPvP (sPvP effectiveness is just a side effect).
I found myself being asked/invited to many teams where they wanted a form of roamer/bunker that could kill quickly, but support when needed. Because of this I had to modify and build the DPS Variant in order to accommodate this niche.

However, In teams where we boast multiple DPS but only say 1 Bunker, then I switch to the base build (10/0/30/30/0) because I’m more bunker with decent DPS that won’t need to call for backup in 1v1 and sometimes 1v2 scenarios.

Choose the build based on the team composition you have. But personally I prefer the DPS build because I find 2v1’s easier with it.

Toughness or Vitality

I shoot for 1800’s toughness and if I have stats left over I try to shoot for around 24-25k hp.

Everything else goes into damage.

Weapon Set Changing during tpvp - should it be allowed

+ Should be allowed to change weapons (hey, we’re allowed to change utilities).
- Not allowed to change traits
- Not allowed to change characters (tie a character as the only toon you can log into during an on-going tournament)
- Not allowed to change sigils/runes/gear

Personally, I think bunkers needs to be based off of Active timing / skills and less on passive Protection procs / high toughness / healing & regen.

Most on-proc abilities should probably be removed if they truly want a skill focused game, and then just add one more utility with a new row of utilities available that would fill the gap of the once passively active boons/attacks etc.

Only use frenzy when the enemy has been stunned or knocked down, this eliminates the damage you’ll receive. If you cant do that, the only other time to use it is when they are playing so defensive that you most likely won’t be taking damage.

Edit:
Going to add to this explanation a little bit. You’ll notice in the video that I will only pop Frenzy if I can snag them in a stun. This usually is Mace #5 stun so I can immediately begin whaling on them with Axe #1.
If you pop frenzy without having the enemy in a vulnerable position then no matter what build you are – your going to be taking a boat load of damage.

I’ve tried the following classes:
Mesmer
Thief
Necro
Ele

And every time I play them, I feel crippled compared to playing my Warrior.
Personally, I just feel like a lot of people haven’t experimented enough with play styles and think that Warriors play poorly simply because they haven’t found the weaponset that fits them yet.
