It’s amusing listening to excuses of why selfish people don’t share their builds etc -especially in this game-. The ironic thing is these people got some of their ideas etc from other people who shared on these forums and elsewhere which is even worse.

If you look at the other profession forums by comparison, they list entire threads sharing and detailing. Check out the mesmer sticky thread for Cat’s build. A whole essay AND website.

This game is gonna come and go and it’s better to share than be remembered for being selfish if people run into you in future games.

Good sword thieves are more difficult to lock down since they have a sword shadow step up all the time on their sword to get rid of stun/immob -even though it isn’t a stun breaker but it still gaps-. You can’t kill them because they simply run away when they realize they can’t win.

I got the impression that the thief in the vid didn’t dodge in the shadow refuge for some reason. Dunno why.

You also seem to have certain things tailored for the thief which in tpvp would be unrealistic like having an axe off hand.

As for someone to ask the good thieves to go into tourneys..you can’t..because the good ones left a long time ago when they didn’t find a challenge or switched to other classes that are more rewarding.

Nice vid but you didn’t bring anything new, honestly. Stun thieves and attack and if they run you gap close. If they refuge you aoe fear/stomp/hammer/longbow etc.

Nothing new and it still won’t deal with a troll sword thief who knows how to abuse his unlimited stun evades/breaks.

Thieves in spvp aren’t a problem but in WvW they are because they tend to burst very hard, easier access to stealth and they keep trying till they get lucky or someone shows up. If it’s a friendly they run away. If its an enemy you lost. Best case scenario against a player who can abuse the thief class: neither of you win and worst case scenario: you lose. This is a broken class. A class that you can’t win against even if you are a better player:

For the record. I’ve shared a number of builds in the past with the community. The reason I’m not sharing this one is because it isn’t mine, and the friend who made it asked me not to.

Regarding thief not being in tpvp, TP won the EU qualifier today, and brought a thief. MiM ran 2 thiefs at one point today.

And the trick to beating s/d, stand in the area they started their sword teleport, because then they can’t use it against you.

Is it brain dead as people make it out?

Was wondering this. People often make fun of Warrior for being an “easy” class to play and master. But I fail to see how it’s any easier than most others: engineer kit swapping is simple, elem attunements is typically switching for a singular skill, rather than a wide swath of five, rangers literally just need to auto attack all day etc…

So, is it really a simple class, or are people just mad because they currently hold the chalice of most group viable.

I would say in PvE its rather easy.

But to be really good at PvP theres a lot of nuances you have to learn about the game in general to be absolutely successful. Until then it feels under powered.

Actually, it’s an issue of animations being so small on Asura it makes more sense to play them.

If you simply improved the animations on the other classes, there wouldn’t be such a large reason to play an Asura.

Honestly, the best way to beat a thief is to out tank him, avoid him. Lure him into your team.

Its not worth taking the time to fight a thief like this.

About as wrong of a build as possible.

And it’s important to know how to 1v1 a thief in the event that you stop him from back capping and need to push him off the point.

Would like to see a 1v1 video vs S/D thieves, I think those are the ones that will give most people trouble more so than D/D specs.

S/D is fairly common.

The pressure is a lot less than D/P so if you’re tanky enough it actually isn’t that hard to just wait out the fight.

It’s important to fight ontop of the area they Sword teleported FROM. This is because when you get a stun or CC, they’ll teleport right back to the same spot.

It’s just a more annoying build is all.

FYI: Right now the top NA thiefs are: Jumper, Caed, Steb, Luci, Cruuk.

I randomly ended up in some duels with Caed in WvW last week as my server was facing Anvil Rock, and he played much tighter than the thief that you’re fighting in the vid.

He was running a zerk-heavy d/p spec, would usually start the fight with a very fast basilisk venom heartseeker through black powder to backstab, forcing you to burn your stability/stun break, then either shadowstep away to burn off your stability, or if it was down use repeated headshots combined with auto attack to keep you locked out of using your heal or skills.

Black powder is very dangerous for melee warriors as the blind pulse is faster than most of our attacks, so you could start an earthshaker and get blinded before you land it.

I try and make use of berserker stance when I’m facing a d/p thief so that I’m guaranteed 8 secs of not being affected by blind, always stay moving, and always keep auto attacking, even if you’re just hitting the air. If your auto attack goes to the next attack in the chain then you know where the thief is and can try and aoe the area or use some kind of cc attack.

Build I’m running Auto stabilities on first stun. If I miss the block on it that usually covers me.

The way you’re explaining the fight, sounds like you didnt apply any pressure back correctly and he got to have his way with you.

Also sounds like you were running Hammer, which no tPvP warrior does due to its speed and ease of dodging. Most good Thiefs (especially Caed) Will have their way with you. Just need to make the fight on your terms not theirs.

Defektive, you state that mace + shield is required for cc build, but is the block so much worth it that you couldn’t take up an offhand mace? Tremor has good range and is a 2 second knockdown instead of a short range 1 second stun. I don’t have access to my game right now to test it so was wondering what thoughts you had on it.

I find blocks to be really important when I’m waiting for CDs to come back up, and to stop certain combos to come out. I like Mace OH a lot and usually run it with Sword. So technically you can still get it.

Any advice against s/d thieves? They are almost as annoying as the blind spamming d/p except they also steal your SOR and feel like way more of a threat to me. There’s also shadow return making it completely impossible to stun lock them.

Need them to swap weapons before you try for a kill so they dont have their sword teleport skill. This will force a cooldown teleport. Rinse repeat, second time around you should be able to strangle them.

I don’t run with SOR simply because of what you just stated, and that boon stripping is everywhere.

Also – drag them into an AoE fest, they can’t do much in there without dying themselves.

Defektive, honestly, how are Warrior’s now?

Like for example, in my experience, in MMO’s a bad stigma tends to become permanent.
So if a bad class is bad for long enough (like us Warriors) then we are doomed to be generally viewed as bad by the community as a whole even when we aren’t, if you get what I mean.

Not saying that Warriors are bad right now, but after being weak for so long, I feel it’s going to be hard to shake off this bad vibe of the class.

Like right now, people must be losing matches, or 1v1’s and blame it on the class, rather than think what they could improve etc.

And kudos, watched your Thief 1v1 video, you make it look so easy man ^.^

This is a question I struggle with.

I think if you were to simply JOIN a team, then Warriors are bad.

If you were to be the center of attention on a team – then Warriors are good.

The key differences is that your team knows where you lack, and has the communication to eliminate those weaknesses.

When I get on a target for my team, and I see stability go up (ugh) I immediately call it out so someone can strip it for me. Until it’s stripped, I switch targets until the original target has lost the boon.

This also is similar for most builds you’ll play, GS Zerker requires a alot of condi cleanse from teammates, Longbow requires teammates with more sustain who are in the fight, so the enemy can’t push your line.


Regarding the stigma. I think until people start seeing Warriors competing successfully in shoutcasted matches, where they are on a team defeating someone well known – until that moment people will look down on them.

After that moment, people will think twice. At that point it’s just a matter of time until it’s accepted. Will it happen right away? No. But with changes from the devs to make us readily available to a team as well as people interested in seeing it work – it’ll happen.

A couple things here
1. Good players will always dodge the shield stun and the mace stun they have very obvious animations and they are very easy to predict
2. Try dueling a sword pistol thief with that build and may god have mercy on your soul.

Good players will dodge the shield stun from characters whose animations are much larger (Norn, Human etc.) They are a lot easier to see.

However, if you play as an Asura, generally your animations are so small and so quick that most players – even the most experienced, won’t see them coming if done at the correct time. It also helps to count dodges.

S/P Thiefs are both easier and more annoying.

D/P Puts our more pressure, S/P has more teleports to be irritating. Generally the fights last longer are end in a stalemate due to their ability to disengage a fight rather easily.

My rule of thumb in tPvP when I see an S/P trying to lure me out and be an annoyance → Entertain them for a few seconds to force a teleport, walk away.

The class doesn’t do enough damage to kill a strong Spirit Ranger or Guardian in a timely fashion, so if you’re covering your points well with rotations, it shouldn’t be an issue. S/P is super susceptible to AoE, so if one gets on you – walk into the AoE Condi fest and they’ll have to leave or die.

They are more of a mosquito.

You’re running an OH axe in this video, is this something your switched in just to duel Steb? I’m still having a hard time taking OH axe seriously even after the damage buff, especially since the multi hit will just completely kill you in any teamfight with a guardian present.

Good video otherwise though! Although I don’t think Steb was expecting such a fight out of you making mistakes such as switching to shortbow leaving him blindless and defenseless against your near instant cast stuns lmao.

I was just experimenting w/ OH Axe. I usually bring OH Mace with me. The offensive weapon set matters less, GS would have had the same effect.

And ya, when they switch to SB in order to kite, thats the best time to become aggressive because they’ll have to waste initiative for evade frames. Which makes the transition back to DP or SP a little easier to deal with.

There’s so many different ways to play it, different weapons that will work with it (CC Warrior, Mace Shield the only requirement). Prefer people figure out their own way that fits them, than give them a layout and say ‘here play this’.

I use Earthshaker (even with 1 adrenaline bar, good damage) when I see a shadow refuge.
If used with more than 1 adr bar, Fierce Blow and/or Staggering Blow to knockback the thief out of SR.

Sometimes I use Earthshaker in my position when I feel incoming stealth thief burst.

Thats good, staggering blow has a pretty good chance to push them out of it.

TBH I don’t recommend wasting your skull crack CD for a chance to hit a most likely evading thief inside their Refuge. Better to just spam damage and have it when you need it right afterwards.

I’ve been asked a lot of questions as to how to deal with Thief’s (and Mesmers).

This video is a quick showing of how to fight a thief in a 1v1 scenario.

The beginning contains the full footage, second half is a play by play on what’s going on and my own though process.

Please note!
Weapon choices don’t matter as much as the critical thinking involved. There are a number of builds that can beat thief’s, but thinking through the situation is the best way to do it!

I hope the nerf it, thiefs have rly no chance against this and they are already weak.

Very funny day when a Thief complains about being weak when they have some of the cheapest builds around. You don’t even have to try as a Thief to kill a Warrior. Just use your Black Powder and stand in it. You have basically just destroyed the effectiveness of this build with one skill.

Although the warrior can just back up and then they have to come out of their black powder. So they’ll HS out, use the backstab, drop another black powder, and the warrior will back up again. If the warrior gets a stun in, the thief has to use a stun breaker… basically, it’s a drawn out battle between the two that relies on someone making more mistakes than the other.

But I do agree, d/p thief can be a bit more problematic with this build due to no real ranged attacks (though the GS toss can sometimes hit a bit hard).

If you start with Zerker Stance you can charge the powder and they will be caught off guard. you can at the least make them waste a stun break and with that build taking just a few hits half way kills them. Optimal thing to do is Shield Bash into the Powder, which most of the time hits before the blind. They stun break, then do the Zerker stance and you can destroy them. Not really worth it though because the timing on backstab is so obvious that it’s better to let someone else handle them while you block/evade.

I’m about to release a tutorial regarding how to fight thiefs as a CC build. Complete with voice over play by play.

Feedback on the recent Necromancer changes

I actually wasn’t talking about you, but about said thread. In 24 hours, that thread generated more dev comments and actual balance changes than the entire Necromancer subforum has in a year. THAT is what I am disgusted by.

Please understand that my job is to make sure the feedback of the sPvP players is properly communicated back to the company (note my title). The reason why I communicated in that thread was because that is my job. We have other community coordinators that are focused on other parts of the game.

The reason why I focused my communication in that thread is because it was loaded with constructive feedback, which should always be promoted. No, it was most definitely NOT the only thread about Necromancers. Also, it was NOT the only thread that I posted in regarding the Necro changes and feedback.

Now, with that in mind; This was a change that was SPLIT between PvP and PvE. The change ONLY happened for PvPers, and it was a quick turnaround due to the fact that the tournament was starting this weekend.

This does NOT mean that we ignore the Necromancer forums. This does NOT mean we don’t make changes that benefit PvE. This does NOT mean we don’t have hotfixes specifically to help PvE players.

Appreciate your feedback, but many of the things you are claiming are simply not true.

If you’re running GS Mace/Shield then you should have been running Soldiers ammy from the beginning.

The classes who are affected by this the most are the Condi meta culprits (Engi, Necro mostly).

Other classes have plenty of teleports, stealths, stunbreaks or stability to competitively evade getting chain stunned.

So yes. Condi spam classes should have something that punishes them for going so glassy.

even if u has 3 stunbreakers in your slots it just delay the chainstun.. actual its not that hard to chainstun anyone even if he has stunbreakers. it is simply overpowered atm. the amount of possible stuns dont match the amount and reload of stunbreakers or stabilityduration.

your argument is a simple excuse to avoid nerf.. but be honest a nerf is needed if stunbreakers gets no buffs in reloadtime or amount of stunbreakers.

sorry very stupid answer.. so take a quick look at ranger as example and count the amount of stabilitysources + duration, the amount of stunbreakers and theyre reload and then the amount of blindsources.

if u try to argument for the actual cc possiblity then at least look at more then ur class. as a hint: there are 7 more. some with less less defensivcapabilities.

I’ve played against a number of good spirit rangers who can withstand a CC Warrior.

I’m confused, would you rather warriors have 0 viable builds for tPvP or are you just upset that if you let us get to close to you we can just apply the jaws and life and stick like white on rice.

Constructive necromancer thoughts.

How do these clips show that a necro is OP? First fighting multi opponents+no stun break, and second one is mostly the eng. Warriors still need some love but this is probably the wrong thread. =P

Are you kittening kidding me ? It’s really hard to stay calm with people like you. He was running berserker stance which makes him immune to condi’s for 8 seconds + balanced stance which is a stunbreaker. He used both in a previous fight.

Atleast for pyshical classes there are several ways to counter a burst such as protection weakness, retaliation, and even dodges. What is a dodge going to do while the condi’s are already on you and literally eating you alive.

Funny, 13k health ele’s in the past were considered to be a huge threat. Everyone asking for a nerf on bunker ele’s. What does 21k hp have to do with you being sustainish or not ? Hammer also gives stunlocks which makes the enemy unable to attack so it does define as making yourself more sustainish wouldn’t you agree ?

He was running 0/0/30/30/10, so yes that does define sustain as me on a warrior.
I was there during the whole stream and at a certain point he had 2 stacks of torment on him which didn’t dmg it at all cause he had so much regen.

Also, I seem to have forgetten to say he was running lyssa runes which should make him even more immune to condi’s, but it doesn’t help if a necromancer can spam his condi’s in 10 seconds again or chain fear you while you are trying to get rid of the condi’s. Face it, necro’s their burst is too strong atm and the more experienced players know that.

He’s running at essentially base HP.

Warrior Regen is kitten poor with Poison being so wide spread right now. Having Poison on you almost reduces your regen to levels pre-patch.

Your far better off running Surge, dumping banner, grabbing Signet of Stamina for more dodges, a condi wipe and you can time your heals around poisen uptime.

Let alone his HP pool is so low that Condis will rip through it without an issue.

Hammer itself is terrible right now against anyone intelligent. The wind up on so many of the attacks is so long that you can time your blinds in such a way as to avoid the majority of the stuns. Hell I’ve dazed someone with mace 3 (melee range) who was trying to Earth Shaker me mid jump. Weapon is to telegraphed and slow to be taken seriously in a Condi meta.

Oh and, Lyssa runes will only hurt him against a Necro who knows how to use his Corrupt Boon. Should have been running Melandru or Hoelberk for -20% / -25% condition duration.

Hell I’ll expand on this even further. If he was that scared of conditions, and followed the instructions above, he would dump 10pts in Tactics to get rid of his banner regen, put 10pts in str so his heals remove cripple/chill/weakness/immobolize on use.

How do these clips show that a necro is OP? First fighting multi opponents+no stun break, and second one is mostly the eng. Warriors still need some love but this is probably the wrong thread. =P

Are you kittening kidding me ? It’s really hard to stay calm with people like you. He was running berserker stance which makes him immune to condi’s for 8 seconds + balanced stance which is a stunbreaker. He used both in a previous fight.

I love how the answer to stopping necros is a very specific build which is suggested that every team runs. [Stunlock warrior]

I’ve never heard that for shatter mesmer or guardian bunker or s/d elementalist. All of those builds can be beaten by a large range of meta builds assuming you outplay your opponent. There is a very small percent chance that you can simply outplay a condi necromancer and beat him using any old regular meta build. That’s why everyone hates necromancers it’s because they are so strong that they singlehandedly ruin the meta.

I’d be all for a hotfix, and frankly I think everyone was expecting/assuming there was going to be changes for necromancer in the last patch. We let it slide for over a month because necromancers deserved some time in the sun. But they had their time and it’s time to have a balanced game again.

Their survivability probably needs minor tweeking based on the early game. But their DPS output is a red flag in team fights and the ability to move conditions from themselves, to others, and spread them in such a way that most classes can’t handle it.

I’d be HAPPY to see their tankiness go up a smidge (-10% damage taken in DS?) if they lost their insane DPS output.

Can you try to record a footage vs a necro post patch?

Will try tonight, it’s generally the same unless they go heavily into defensive utilities.

Necro HP and longetivity is OK, it’s not amazing, but its not bad.

I don’t see a reason not to start them with like 20% life force in the beginning of a match and give them a small buffer. But they don’t need much else.

Yes. They are also a nightmare for single target DPS classes because of pet body blocking.

Just a thought, should it be changed that offensive AOE spells (i.e, AOE effects that do not affect allies) grab priority on NPCs before PCs?

no way jose. that would break the game. everyone would run an insane amount of minons and AoEs would go down the tubes.

Way I see it, it is AoE stealth in the beginning that is the problem, not necro or deathshroud lifefoce pool. Infact, this is the only game I have played that has no counter to stealth.

+1. On our list. Seriously though, we have already been making small fixes to mouse selection. We have a whole page dedicated to targeting issues we plan to fix. How about the issue where you cant select targets through invisible walls. i.e. the dividing walls between side points and keep in Forest.

TBH, rather have tab targeting deal with Player vs. AI better than having it go through walls right now.

Regarding Warrior banner, it’s a bug.

Devs don’t see it as an issue when we showed them it almost 2 months ago.

So now I use it as perma swiftness for the group when we’re roaming.

When something isn’t working as intended and you’re taking advantage of it, then it’s an exploit. It often takes? devs a long time to get around to fixing issues. Just because they don’t act immediately doesn’t mean it’s not an issue. I don’t care either way. Just don’t try and sugar coat it. Own up to what you’re doing.

Ok. I’m using a bug to exploit swiftness for 4 seconds. There are worse things to deal with at a high level then watching a player spend 2seconds to get 4 seconds of swiftness.

Yup there are bigger exploits going on, no that does not make other cheats ok suddenly.

The devs will have to pick priorities at some point, I think they picked pve sadly

No one cares about minimal things like this.

Exploits like the block bug giving guardians the ability to live forever. Teleports through walls / structures. Necromancers getting life force before the game starts.
Guardian infinite blind.

These are game changing bugs / exploits that everyone used for months.

4 seconds of swiftness on a 2second cast is so far down on the ‘we really don’t care about that right now’ list that it’s almost inconsequential.

That only time its remotely useful is if you have banner up and are going from one point to another, and want 9% more movement speed.

If anything, it’s more of a gimmick than it is useful.

All I want is more interesting mechanics that actually synergize well with weapon skills.

Example:
Replace ‘Apply Confusion on Interrupt’ with ‘Apply Vulnerability on Interrupt’

Small things like that, that just make a lot more sense.

It wouldn’t hurt to also have weapon skills that compete with the flexibility over classes have. Rangers just got a stealth on a 12 sec weapon cd.

Not saying we need stealth, but mechanics like that are what makes a class strong.

Bunker Warriors viable yet?

We fought a team last night for our mistleague matches that brought a bunker Warrior as their primary bunker.

He ran a similar build to the ones listed above.

The end result was 500-30, 500-80 in our favor. We just demolished the Warrior, he couldn’t bunker much of anything, even the regen was bad against poison.

Still not viable imo.

Are you sure it was just the bunker warrior and not the soloQ feeding your team a victory?

It was a mistleague match, not a tournament que.

AKA, these are teams that have signed up specifically to fight other teams in a third party ladder.

It was their full roster, a premade. All the players were a sPVP level of 30+
