Free transfers is what kittened up WvW. Many servers are dead because of it.

Free transfers will assist guilds that focus on world vs world and will also boost world vs world interest.

In what way will it assist guilds? Please give an explanation to back up your statement.

Guilds will then be able to recruit individuals especially new players who are in other servers convincing them to transfer in order to participate in World vs World.

For every 1 person that thinks this is good, there will be another than thinks this is bad.

In addition if a guild or individual is facing a negative experience in world vs world either due to harassment, or lack of participation they are not constrained and are free to transfer. Free transfers will allow greater competitive environments because guilds can make the decisive decision to move servers and assist the servers that remain uncompetitive in their tier.

If a person/guild, deep in their heart, wants to leave… they will leave. Money won’t be an option at that stage. If I wanted to move servers, the transfer cost won’t stop me. It’s like $20 to transfer to a Very High server. Unless you’re a server hopper, 20 bucks is nothing….

With the introduction of GvG WvW will be completely dead. I still enjoy WvW and I do so because I do not have to leave my mostly PvE-centric guild and can still enjoy some larger-scale PvP. I do not want to lose that.

You are assuming that if anet makes gvg that it will be like the current gvg that’s being done in wvw. It almost certainly will not be the same. The wvw gvg is really just a death match and no where near as complex and in depth as a real gvg format should be. If anet ever makes a gvg format, I’d expect it to be as complex or nearly as complex as gw1 gvg.

I am playing on a T3 server. We have 2-4 active guilds on our maps during evening at most plus a single public zerg that typically is no larger than 15-20 players. And I enjoy that.

Now if guilds are busy doing GvG instead of helping out in the WvW maps, this will kill WvW more or less.

I am sure GvG would not have such an impact on busy T1 servers, but down here – where WvW still can be fun at times – it will.

The commander changes ARE meaningful and they are a direct result of the CDIs.

I fail to see how a yellow commander tag is going to reinvigorate wvw. And since the change happened over a month ago and wvw is still in the same state it was before we know that it accomplished nothing meaningful.

Frankly, I’m not expecting anything from ArenaNet especially after the massively failed Adopt-A-Dev program.

Didn’t your guild get a dev? Why do you consider it as failed?

Have you guys genuinely never seen something come out of a CDI? Have you truly never seen changes that were outlined, discussed, and honed in the forge of the CDI system?

Remember, this is the WvW section so when people say nothing has come out of the CDI, they are talking about the WvW CDI’s. Nothing meaningful has come out of those.

We had a CDI about the commander system and Devon summarized everything the players wanted out of it and all we got was different commander tag colours… which somehow took almost a year to implement….

We had a CDI about world population and obviously nothing came out of that because if it did, John Corpening wouldn’t have had to make a thread recently about the exact same thing…….

I just hope the developers are doing something meaningful behind the scenes that the players don’t know about yet. Only time will tell.

If WvW is dead, the community killed it, not anet.
How can there be different outcomes and new fights each week when every server is tier locked because we, as a community, have stacked servers so much.

Anet charging $35+ per transfer is what causes stacking. If they didn’t charge for transfers or were much more reasonable about the cost of it, then you’d see guilds and people moving around a lot more.

Interesting comment. Do you think that free transfers would reduce stacking? That things would just naturally even out over time?

I’m genuinely interested in this topic and would like to get some insight into it from our players’ perspective. (For clarity, I’m not on the WvW Team; y;’all know that. I just found the theory interesting.)

Hey Guys,

Just a quick update on some changes I shared with you in a previous post. With the build on Tuesday build site interacts will have text better describing them, the arrow cart and ballista build sites will now have a smaller footprint and the siege disabler has a more visible projectile giving you a better chance to block it. We look forward to seeing how these changes improve the WvW experience.

There aren’t enough aoe blocks in this game to make an animation change very worthwhile.

You do know that Desolation’s been stuck with them for months, right? During the last tournament, we even got them multiple times. The one before that, we were stuck with them and another server and were 2v1’ed for the vast majority of the matchups. This isn’t about score, it’s just plain difficult to have fun like this. We had Vizunah during their prime, now this.

I don’t mind playing against a stronger server and losing, that’s part of the game after all. However, some variety in our matchups would be nice.

Just for the record, I don’t think banning non-EU players from our servers is the right call. We’ve all heard it before with the French Canadians, etc, etc. Some overnight protection mechanic or funds to employ a night time squad (let’s face it, they can’t have a day job too) would be fine; along with some way for us to fight in a matchup without the current rank one in it every now and then.

You get variety in the form of a changing 3rd server. Jade Sea the past two weeks, Elona the week before, Kodash the week before that, Baruch the week before that. The week before that you fought FSP and Gandara.

Every week there is a chance you won’t get matched up with SFR. RNG is RNG. Get over it. Be thankful it’s not like NA where servers have been fighting the same opponent for over a year.

Your server could also tank for a bit. Intentionally reduce your score/rating so you drop in rank and get to fight weaker servers……….

Everyone is allowed to play the game on whatever server they want to. They paid for the game themselves so who are we to tell them what they can or cannot do.

Yea, it’s a huge problem at the moment that no one can control. There really isn’t any solution other than to hope that SFR becomes full and players can’t transfer to it anymore, but that is unlikely as well.

Your server should try to counter it. Recruit NA players yourself.
Or stop caring about the score and just have fun and sooner or later you will bore a lot of players out of SFR. I know the queues are starting to become ridiculous during prime time so maybe some guilds will leave.

Also, Anet is going to experiment with some new mechanics in WvW that might change things up. I’d wait and see what happens with that. Hopefully they do something to reduce the importance of coverage.

Hello All,

There was quite a lot of discussion around the proposal of removing white swords from objectives in WvW. We understand there are concerns about how this change might work in practice or how player behavior may change as a result of it. We felt like the best way to understand fully the impact, and give players a chance to see for themselves how it directly changes the WvW experience is to let people try it and see what they think.

We have decided to run a special multi-week event in WvW where we’ll be changing some of the “rules” of WvW for a limited time. This event will feature two major rule changes while it is running: we are planning to remove white swords from objectives, and add points per kill in WvW to the over-all score for the duration of this event. We are currently targeting December for this event but will keep you posted when we have dates nailed down for certain. If this type of event is successful, we may look to do more events like this in the future where for short periods of time the rules of WvW are changed to different rules, scoring and scenarios to help both keep the game fresh, as well as to change up the experience and try new fun things for WvW.

We look forward to your feedback once the event begins, both on the temporary event only changes, as well as the concept of these special events in WvW.

2: whilst I am very much looking forward to the raid discussion and chatting with you all about it I do want to make it clear that this last CDI has been excellent, with maturity and collaboration throughout. And why wanted u too change the gem exchange anyway …so many things could be improved..like for example guildhalls or housing what has been talked about from the start…but too ruin a perfect working system seem just like a bit waste of time. And will not make ppl buy gems for real money more u must be lucky if ppl buy them at all. Just turn it back and give us just the freedom in buying the amount of gems we want.

I love playing the game and i love shopping on the gemstore but with this not needed change. U know that new players dont have this amount of money.. well i dont even have this amount of money because iam a casual player who does play everyday but saving up a little bit at the time. This really was a cold shower after seeing that lovely outfit u introduced and to see i only have a several option to get my gems and i cant even save up in flexible way thank u for giving me no option at all.

Anet’s M.O. is to devote developer resources into fixing things that aren’t broken instead of fixing things that are broken.

People have been asking for raiding UI for WvW since release but the UI developers are doing this…

I keep seeing people shout about how this is milking people out of money and I really don’t see how that really makes any kind of sense.
The prices for gems are still exactly the same as they were back at release.

The fact remains that they don’t even have to have the gold to gem transfer in the first place. If they really wanted to milk the players they would remove it completely, which they quite clearly haven’t done.

Also, why did you intentionally increase gem->gold price by ~25%? That’s a pretty hefty spike for just a new outfit and finisher and it happened immediately after the patch so I’m pretty sure it wasn’t player driven.

Last time they gave us any information they told us that their company was split in half. One half works on maintenance of the game (living world, balances updates, bug fixes etc) and the other half works on expansion content.

Syndictive discussed this concept with our developer briefly, but I hope this was brought to the table:

Removing the ability to hard-rez fully-dead players while in combat, or putting a timer on WHEN you can rez fully-dead players. (IE, 2:00 after they die)

This thought arises from the issue that if my guild (a skill group) is fighting 20v50, we manage to kill a lot of players on our first pass, say 10. The next players push up into us, and make us kite back from the dead-state players. The players in the back of this massive group then rez the fully-dead players nullifying our work. This makes fights against double our numbers nearly impossible – they become simple attrition battles no matter our organization or skill level.

This change would empower skill groups and outnumbered servers during open-field and in-keep fighting without completely destroying numbers advantage.

This change I suggested, in addition to your new PPK system, could easily break down social barriers that exist in WvW currently between the fights/GvG guilds and the PPT focused players. The rift could essentially be non-existent if the kills are a substantial part of the score as well. The only worry that I have is that now PPT-focused groups and players will only run away from skill groups, because they would be afraid to hurt the server score.

Not just that. There is a bug with the revive mechanic at the moment that is allowing players to bypass the limit on the number of resurrectors.

No. Scouting is not fun for the vast majority of players. No amount of rewards (except maybe precursors) is going to get people to do the most mind numbingly boring aspect of WvW.

Finally, there open. There wasn’t a single oceanic WvW guild below the 4 servers you mentioned should be locked. It’s not really fair for offpeak players to be locked out of being able to wvw.

The increasing of server caps is the reason why there isnt a single oceanic WvW guild below those 4 servers anymore.

I find that the best people to solve this issue are the celebrity commanders themselves.

Once you’ve gained celebrity commander status on your server and are able to rally large numbers onto your tag, you should be using that as an opportunity to give newer, lesser known commanders some exposure to the crowd. Train new commanders and let them lead the group that you’ve rallied. Pass the torch, so to speak.

This way, the celebrity commander doesn’t always have to be the one commanding which helps prevent him/her from burning out and in the mean time new commanders can rise up and eventually be able to rally large numbers by themselves.

If only it were so easy. The thing about seasoned commanders is that they know the field. I’m not talking about map politics either. I’m talking about knowing the people to whisper and who to talk to to get things done. I can easily jump down a few channels in TS, talk to someone for a short bit, then jump back. I’m also 100% familiar with TS3 and have CCOMs set up, etc. The portfolio of skills and knowledge that a commander needs to have to be decently organized and good is quite large. And quite frankly, many don’t care to learn them, knowing how difficult or stressful that it can be.

So I wish that others would tag up. My favorite moment is when I ask if anyone wants to take over my 20 to 30-man group on TS, a solid militia group made up of people from various good guilds and <80% of them on TS (which is a difficult thing to achieve), and all I get is crickets. I particularly enjoy commanding, but I much prefer leading competent people who know what they’re doing and require minimal commanding to get them to behave in the right fashion in a fight.

Pugmanding is too prone to burnout and utter frustration. Most, including myself, just go on pugmanding kicks for a short while, then go back to playing soloely with their guild group, running untagged, avoidng the use of siege.

Well you gotta show people that commanding can be a positive experience (i.e. get things done and get lots of loot bags) and more people might wanna try it out.

Scoring Discussion

Several people suggested keeping the map state across scoring periods so that the investment you make in upgrades and effort you take in conquering objectives but the scores will have far less of a chance of running away when the victory points come from the scoring period not the PPT.

Whether this is a good idea or not depends on how the winner of a scoring period is determined. Whether it’s on a per cap basis or the same system we have now.

If the latter, no issues will be solved since if server A has an overwhelming numbers advantage over B and C during 1 scoring period, they can cap/upgrade everything and then just play ultra defensively during subsequent scoring periods and get a win handed to them.

Now you can’t exactly blame anyone for doing that but i am amazed at how a game as big as GW with competitive PvP hasn’t addressed such an issue yet? why aren’t there any rewards\free transfers to weaker servers in order to lure big guilds there and balance things a little bit? why aren’t transfers to already high populated top servers shut down?

Firstly, you are assuming that people transfer because of rewards. They don’t.
Secondly, I seriously think you have not played this game long enough to fully understand the situation so I suggest that you go back and just play the game for a few more weeks/months and see if your perception changes.

Guilds move because they want to have more fights. Your server and a lot of other servers near its rank still have A LOT of wvw guilds. 1-2 guilds leaving will not affect you. Get acquainted with the other WvW players and guilds on your server.

There will be more tournaments in the future so if you don’t get the 200 tickets each week this time, you can still collect more tickets from the next tournament.

Winning does not matter. Having fun does.

You mean those investor meetings that were talking about a 2010 release for GW2 and an “expansion to come in late 2013”? I don’t trust anything GW2-related that comes out of NCSoft, they’ve been proven false so many times in the past that they are not a reliable source of information.

Also, no to Elona or Cantha, there are still too many areas of Tyria (continent) yet to be explored.

Just like WvW players are forced to do pve if they want legendaries/ascended gear, anet wants pve players to come to wvw for their world completion. This is their way to introduce players to wvw. If players don’t like it they’ll leave and never come back after finally completing it. But if they do like it, they’ll stick around and eventually become new wvw players.

That’s how the game works. You’ll just have to deal with it. I suggest joining a wvw guild or getting acquainted with your server’s wvw community. I got it done within a few days because I got on my server ts and ran with the wvw players. Now I only play wvw.

Completely and utterly wrong about EU. I play during EU daytime and there’s been no shortage of fights from most of the gold league EU servers.

If you are looking for a server, I suggest FSP or Deso. I’ve seen both to have admirable forces out at that time and they could certainly use more.

Solution to fix the population imbalance

Sorry in advance for not reading the 21 pages.

The issue cannot be fixed by changing the population caps on the maps, because the real issue brought by low population is lack of coverage.

Fort Aspenwood (my server) can hold itself just fine against JQ, TC and SoS at reset, when all the maps are queued. EU and especially NA are our prime time. But once OCE hits, we get our butt handed to us because we have no coverage and everything gets capped. Changing population caps of WvW maps isn’t going to change our lack of OCE coverage.

The only real solution is to even the servers out. Now this can be accomplished in 2 ways : Lower the maximum server population to force people to “trickle down” to other servers and/or modify the barrier to servers transfers.
A few suggestions on how to achieve that :

  • Let people transfer for free in the few days leading up to the next tournament, but make switching servers impossible during the following regular season. Do it once and see how it plays out.
  • Give everyone a free transfer or reset everyone’s server selection, lower the server caps and let people reorganize themselves. I know, this would be unfair to many because then, some people would be unable to get back on the server they were on, but that’s kind of the point. This could force entire WvW guilds to move around, improving 24/7 coverage.
  • Remove the 1 or 2 lowest population servers and give everyone in those servers a free transfer.
  • Give a free transfer to everyone in the fully populated servers and reduce the population cap gradually as people move out to other servers.

Forcing people to move out of servers is gonna cause a huge outcry and a lot of negative PR for anet. It is akin to forcing families to move out of their homes. Even if people did leave, it is 100% certain that the problem will still exist after. People need to start thinking a little more in the long term and about the ramifications of their suggestions.
