Nothing says the specialization will have the same weapon skills as the base profession. All weapons may have different skillsets. I say wait for the first blog on a specialization so we get some baseline on the amount of changes between regular and spec before panicking that an offhand means just two new skills total.

Did you try using sliders to affect the noses? I know the first male face started with a huge nose (Donari has a bit of a beak, but not grotesquely so) and I tested slimming it down. That did reduce the apparent age of the face, come to think of it.

I’d certainly have to fiddle with the teeth on the female charr faces, my current settings had them far too bucktoothed.

How does it compare to people doing the content at level? Downleveling was always supposed to keep you competitive, not superpowered; perhaps this change is meant to bring things back in line to still having to be on your toes even if you’re a geared 80.

(My guild 4-manned CM asura path today and we didn’t notice any problem in the fights. Except that running into the stables turned murderous because the riflemen noticed us even with someone still in cutscene … that was a surprise!).

Can we get simple/plain black weapons?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I’d be happy with the Shadow Weapons if they didn’t have the massive curls of bone. I’m sure those are a selling point for many, I just personally don’t care for over-the-top bone decor. The other bone fittings work well on them for me, it’s the big hunks of bone that look tacky to me. (How the heck would one holster that pistol, anyway?) They are very nicely made weapons, they simply don’t match my aesthetic preferences.

So I’m hoping that black smoky effect will be reused at some point in a more elegant fashion. Because it looks really cool.

I looked at all the new faces. I did like the top Human Male one, as looking older and more seasoned, and the three new Sylvari Male ones as having some serious attitude in the expressions. The third one sort of reminds me of The Flash from the current TV show. Human and Norn females didn’t look different from available base faces beyond makeup and slight eyebrow angle changes. Charr females had something wonky with the teeth (my Charr has teeth jutting up from her lower jaw, but on the new faces the teeth all become goofy overbite things). Sylvari females were ok but nothing sticks in my memory for them. Asura males got one with quite the scar along with yellow pupils, which will stand out far more as a different face.

Some of my issues may come from my slider settings. Someone with far more energy than me might be able to make new characters of each race/gender so the sliders are all at neutral, then check how the new faces look on those. Or maybe just set all the sliders to neutral in the makeover kit; I get too fretsome I’ll accidentally apply the changes to risk that

Horizontal/Vertical in middle neutral position
Collision and Zoom all the way to the right
Field of View nearly all the way to the right
Enable First Person
Adjust Camera to Character Height

If that isn’t quite right, stop the first person and fiddle with the vertical.

Shadowstep/Blink "fixes"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Donari.5237

I really like the idea of adding opening doors to sealed away furnished areas. That way ANet can control access to things that really might break the map but let people see all the cool spots that are just fine other than having an inoperable door.

At the very least, we should be told why these areas are blocked off. I don’t usually ask ANet to tell things they aren’t ready to yet, but this particular issue makes ANet look mean-spirited and dedicated to stopping roleplay. An explanation would let us brainstorm fixes, as we’ve done since ANet took the time to say why sittable chairs won’t work so we could then suggest Toys and the like and stop demanding implementation of interactable furniture as it’s just not technically feasible on this engine.

Lol do seriously mesmers get shield?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

Mechanically I’m content to wait and see what the shield actually does. ANet has a way of coming up with cool twists on things like that. Until I see otherwise, I’ll expect the shield skills to be fun to use.

Aesthetically, I’m a bit more meh. There are very few shields I like to wield, because they block so much of the view of the rest of my character. Plus they clip horribly when worn, and I say that as someone not very finicky about clipping in most cases (it just looks really wrong to have bits of armor, backpiece, hair, etc poking through one’s nice solid shield).

Besides the blocking of the view, the design of most Tyrian shields is clunky and doesn’t look like something useful in combat, (This is a generalization. I adore a few of the available shields, like Shield of the Moon for my sylvari guardian — sure it has holes, but aegis covers those up, right?).

So here’s hoping they design a few new shields with mesmer specs and light armor in mind, so people don’t avoid the weapon just because it clashes with their dress

Know what I hope to see most in HoT?

Donari.5237

I’m still fond of the shot I used in https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/archive/suggestions/Why-We-Need-Sittable-Chairs-Picture/first#content

But I don’t think the technical limitations on environmental interactable chairs have changed, so all we can really hope is that someone in ANet has noticed the various suggestions for deployable chairs people have made over the past year or two. My favorite remains having a Toy that when used seats you in a chair (possibly there could be a few types of chairs, though the more individual Toys you have the more you’ll want a Toy Wardrobe for your account). It would give you a changed hotbar to let you have different seated poses.

Certainly not a “major feature” so I could see it sneaking into HoT without early ballyhoo.

less dodge-dependent profession/build?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

Over time you’ll get better at the dodging. I say that as someone with very little in the way of twitch reflexes. I did have to get a Naga HEX mouse because I couldn’t coordinate high mobility with skill use all on the keyboard.

I’ve leveled at least one of each profession to 80. I would say my lowest amount of dodges come on my support-built guardian (she does minimal dps, though, so killing things takes a loooong time) with scepter/focus and tons of purifying shout utilities, followed by my staff necromancer with the blood fiend healing minion to semi-tank.

You still need to at least move out of bad things, but the dodge itself comes into play less often when you have other ways of stopping attacks (Guardian aegis via the F skills and the Retreat! shout is excellent for that, along with Focus 5 which absorbs 3 hits). Not to mention Guardians can survive the ill effects of missing a dodge more easily than others might.

You might find guardian amazingly fun. I know I did, it went from my “never gonna play this” (pre-launch) to “doing a dungeon? Lemme get on my guardian.” Her dps is laughable but she’s often been the last one standing and has even finished fights when the boss was low enough when her friends took dirt naps that it wasn’t rude to make them wait and watch her slug it out.

Mesmer clones/phantasms can save you from being targeted enough to reduce the twitch dodging needed, but mesmer is reportedly harder to deal with leveling these days given the current trait unlock system. I didn’t really play mesmer until I was comfortable with mobility and dodging anyway, so I can’t say how it feels as a newcomer to GW2 gameplay.

No matter how minimal you make your twitch dodging, however, you will still have to do it. Eventually it won’t seem so hard, I promise, as you learn the tells and the timing and what must be dodged and what can be soaked.

I want new Necro Minion in HoT

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

There may be different aesthetics and head-canons going on here. As I understand Tyrian necromancy, it’s not necessarily dark and evil, and the minions aren’t trapped souls, they’re soulless flesh constructs animated by the necromancer’s will. To me they’re plenty ugly; I do wish some could be more benign like the rather adorable shadow fiend.

I don’t demand cuteness and rainbows, but neither do I feel the need for bones and goo everywhere. Death can have some dignity.

That said I rather like most of the links you provided (bone fiend looks too generic to me) and would have no complaints if those changes were made.

In Unearthed Arcana you can reset individual fights with the challenge mote near where you enter the fight. If such a mote is not available, you need to drop out to character select and then log back in. If you have a super slow character load I could see that being a pain, but for me it’s maybe 10 seconds before I’m back at the start of the instance ready to fire it up again. Much less a pain than finishing the whole instance and only then returning to the purple star entry.

Also when ordering I had a shipping date, when receiving order confirmation that got bumped 2 weeks or so and I was trying to get it before TESO came out … barely did get it in time.

But the computer itself is very nice, they were communicative in email, and I got to choose most all my components and case. If they do laptops, I’d consider them a trustworthy source.

- Oh, that would be cool, necromancers would enjoy that.

- Big flappy wings (any flickering motion, actually) make me queasy when I can’t move my camera away from them, eg at the bank/TP
- TESO sorcerors have flappy winged minons and until bank interaction hid everyone around you it was painful to use the bank.
- Ele fire minions with the wings are really annoying

Actually what’s going on is you got Chapter 8 for free for logging in during its active period. Chapters 1 to 7 will be 200 gems each to unlock (though then they will be unlocked for all the alts you ever make), or you can find someone who has them unlocked to take you through the story, though you won’t get the achieves or be able to do interactions in the instances.

When you do unlock them, you can play them in any order you like. You’d have to abandon progress on your current chapter to do so. If you want to do the achieves associated with the chapters, you must first complete the chapter on an alt, then use that same alt to do the achieves in a second run through.

I’d offer to shepherd you through the story so you can decide if you want a full unlock but I have a splitting headache right now I can’t commit to doing anything for a bit.

Fishing

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I don’t know 1 game in which you can fight underwater and fish. It doesn’t work together.
As said in a previous post. You can fish every time.
Go underwater and grab the fish yourself.

Not that I like fishing in WoW, for reasons I’ve stated more than once, but WoW has both fishing and underwater combat. You can’t fight the fish, you have to stand above the water and equip a fishing pole, preferably at fish pool nodes. But you most definitely can fight underwater in WoW, they even have a whole underwater zone full of things that attack you.

The main problem with fishing is having to hover one hand over the mouse waiting for a random moment when it’s time to hook the fish. Sure that combats bots, but it brings the rest of your game play and socializing to a screeching halt. Getting timed buffs as you do in WoW only makes it worse, because you need to cast as often as you can or you’re wasting your bait. So no taking time to type to your guildies for the five or ten minutes of the buff!

Blech.
