I believe it was mentioned in the Black Lion forums yesterday.
Now the paranoid query: Will the Krytan armor still exist after the patch? I have never bought it because it’s mostly ugly (I don’t go for bone spikes and while I like the female top part I only have one medium female and I don’t play her). However, I could see nabbing it later for my locker (I don’t mind the extra 100 gems, if I’m planning to spend gems, that’s fine — and I didn’t want to pay out anything while the town clothes issue remains as is).
Right now my faith is shaken strongly enough to believe they’d pull even more options away from us and “streamline” the fashion part of the gem store into oblivion.
You can get the runes out by transmuting onto something else and salvaging that.
They did respond, they said please wait until after the patch and then refunds will be offered on anything that’s been turned into a tonic.
What I want to know is if there’s a time window for this. Because I don’t want to rush into refund requests if there’s a real chance they’ll restore the mix and match functionality in some way, and I will at least see what the changes really are before deciding I’d rather have the gems back than ever see that outfit again. However, if I give them 30-60 days to announce corrections or at least plans to correct, and it becomes apparent that the changes are permanent and unacceptable, I’ll be rather cheesed off if they say “You should have asked for this within 14 days after the patch, too bad, so sad.”
I wish the fan made video Guardians of Tyria were still around in its first, pre-Mesmer form. That video was what I showed to everyone I could before and during beta to demonstrate how awesome the game would be. It used a Two Steps From Hell soundtrack and was perfectly timed to the music (after the maker edited in Mesmer footage it was too rushed).
I don’t know your dad so I have no idea what would persuade him. Maybe let him play with a character slot on your account for a few hours, with the understanding whatever he does will be deleted? If you trust him not to spend your gold or wreck your gear, anyway. Then he can get a hands on feel for the game. Or, in order not to get banned for account sharing, let him watch over your shoulder and dictate what you do until he’s itching to do it himself and orders a copy.
Town clothes complaints have their own huge thread (and are well founded). For the “Wardrobe,” the way to lessen rage is to take note that what it does is not act as a Wardrobe, but as a streamlined transmutation system with the ability to only buy a skin once for all your alts. In that it is definitely an improvement … once one gets past the giant disappointment of realizing it is not an inventory clearing tool. It should have been called a “Skin Locker,” as that is what it is, even though that’s a clumsier and uglier phrase.
I do resist the idea that they’ve “evolved” during the past centuries. Evolution takes a heck of a lot longer than that. So I’d rather there was something more intrinsic than environmental factors allowing the wider skin tone variety.
Especially since even the dark skinned ones clearly are cold-resistant, so they didn’t come out of hot places.
Hmm. Hopefully they’ll act like bundles in that case. Bundles can be ~ key swapped out by Ele’s and Eng’s.
I already have maxed out bag slots on most of my alts. My current leveling guy is waiting to see if there’s a sale in the next two days … and for me to decide if I want to spend any gems before we find out what they’re doing about the town clothes. While I would like the new collection expanders and more bag slots, I don’t want to give ANet a false impression that gems are still getting spent. So long as those are permanently available, I’m darn well waiting.
If it’s a toggle, I’m all for it. Most of my characters have something they use IC that I’m fine with showing as they walk around, but swap to something OOC that’s useful in a fight (like my second mesmer’s GS, ICly she’s just a noblewoman trained with swords and pistols, not a mesmer, and has no reason to carry a honking big blade on her back).
Note: IC/OOC = In Character/Out of Character. I don’t hold with this new fangled co-op of them for Combat instead of Character!
I had a whisper from them just yesterday, in the middle of group guild RP commemorating our fallen in LA. It was really annoying. At least I haven’t found a limit on the number of blocked accounts yet.
It does always seem to be the same gold seller company. Maybe ANet/NCSoft could do some sort of targeted action against them?
I actually have the full Cook’s on my norn ranger, as I realized when making screens of all my mix and match. She wasn’t mixed, so I didn’t photo her. My sylvari guardian has all of cook’s but the boots — those are on my human necromancer as cute kicky shoes to go with her hot pants.
Not having HOM myself I’m not 100% sure on this but I think HOM will still be highly useful because it gives free infinite skins without charging for the transmute. So it and the Zenith/Hellfire/Radiant stuff will let you have fancier looks for free.
Today (Saturday the 29th) it’s the Royal Terrace Pass. 1000 gems.
Agreed, I just checked the wiki and it looks like you have to a) get to Wolf reward chests b) salvage out rng tokens c) use said tokens in the Forge for an rng 1 in 3 shot at the Masquerade.
Playing since launch, doing enough WvW to world explore twice, occasionally doing WvW for fun with my guild, I’m still at early Rabbit in WvW. I’ve never played a PvP match (might have, if the npc hadn’t been bugged at launch and if I could have played with guildies) so yeah, I’m not gonna be getting reward chests at any level let alone Wolf.
That may mean I don’t get the skin. Fair enough. But those who are willing to do the PvP work for it should have a way to get it.
I don’t think so, Kaspar. They’ve said gear that’s gone is gone. However, if you are able to retrieve the skin via a splitter before the patch and keep it handy, then you’ll have it for your skin locker after the patch.
Now if only I had some way of knowing which of my gear pieces I transmuted over special skins … I know I covered the human T1 helm with an eyepatch but that’s hardly difficult to replace for a few silver. And almost all my 80’s got full Temple gear that I then changed up but heck if I’m buying splitters at 300 gems each to split up 18 gear items. If I want a Temple skin that’s gone, I’ll spend karma.
I can’t begin to speculate because the last few blogs have changed their titles once published and “A Solid Foundation” turned into PvP/PvE merges which has nothing to do with game core systems or teaching things to new players or housing, all of which were speculated on based on the title.
I do note they aren’t publishing it until April 2. Presumably that’s both to let them do something amusing on Monday and to avoid anyone claiming what they publish is a prank.
Or it could simply be how their skin varies. I’d wonder if there could be any piebald Norns …
I have 3 cats right now, and have had other cats in my life. The color of their paw pads seems entirely unrelated to anything else, be it fur or eyes. It can be pink, black, or a mix. They’ve all been shorthairs, so it’s not related to being of breeds suited to specific climates.
I like the idea that Norns have enough connection to animals to share some characteristics such as variable skin tone. Plus darker skin is just so much more awesome to me … I’m RL pasty fish white, but have black siblings, and believe me they are far better looking nor me
I like being able to make truly good looking characters! And I’ll take any lore explanation I can to make it make sense.
I’ve never known how one unlocks PvP skins other than getting them randomly in achievement chests. I’d love the voodoo one, but have no clue how to get it (and if it means doing a lot of sPvP, compared to the .. zero .. I’ve done, well. I don’t think that’s going to happen unless being totally lame and failing every fight can still get me the skin).
They did say there are changes coming to guilds to prevent griefing. They didn’t explain what the changes are, but take a peek April 15 to see if your permission controls are more finely tuned.
I am pretty sure that after you pay the transmutation charge for a piece of armor/weapon that you can transmute it infinitely for free on your chars afterwards. One charge for one piece doesn’t sound that bad when you can get a bunch for free from map completion.
Unfortunately this is not true. You can put the skin in the “Wardrobe” just by equipping, destroying, or salvaging it. But to apply it to some other armor costs a charge. Someone else said it best: This isn’t a Wardrobe, this is a streamlined and improved transmutation system.
So if you want to freely swap your look, you have to keep your bags as clogged as they are now or farm the hell out of charge sources or pay far more money than it’s worth for short RP sessions. None of which counts as fun, imo. I’ve had to readjust my thinking on this and set my mind to “well, at least now my alts who don’t have the look can get it. But I still can’t dungeon on my necromancer even though she’s my only alt in ascended because of all her boots and coats and gloves and skirts and and and …”
I wouldn’t mind another automatic salvage kit. I have one on my dungeon guardian, but my leveling alt would do well to have one … otoh I am seriously averse to buying any more gems ever right now due to the town clothes snafu. If I don’t -really- need a thing from the store, I’m likely not to shell out.
Bit of a change from at least 50 bucks a month over the life of the game, I know.
Sadness. I use the daily and monthly to level with. I mean I do other things as well, but it gives a visible progress bar and I generally make sure to do them on my current leveling project even if I could do them faster on an 80.
Though I just checked my balance: of my 11,175 AP 3,904 are from daily and 971 from monthly. That cap isn’t going to hit any time soon. Probably not in my lifetime of play in this game, actually. (I’m not an AP farmer in that I don’t do EVERY daily every day, but I have done at least 5 a day almost every day since they were introduced, and every monthly, at least 4 of the categories a month. So the serious leaderboard chasers might be a lot closer to the cap).
Question: If one already has over that cap (I don’t know if anyone does, I haven’t looked closely at my AP sources and I’m at 11.5K or so), do they lose AP? And once you hit the cap, how much slower is it going to be to get to the next chest? With the Radiant set arranged to take ungodly amounts of AP to complete, losing daily/monthly sources means it just won’t be doable in any reasonable amount of time.
I have a Ranger at 80 and 2 Warriors at 80. The second Warrior leveled up with longbow and I had so much fun with it (nothing like having a constant source of combos with yourself) that I gave him the Rox’s Quiver I’d been saving for just the right character.
It’s always going to depend on personal taste, but I recommend the warrior over the ranger as being far more entertaining to play.
Now you have your answer, but for others in your boat, this site is -awesome- if you don’t want to do all your own exploration:

I’ve got two world completions now and I still refer to that when stuck.
I’ve only read page one and it’s past my bedtime so I will just say that Shriketalon, you have a rare gift for combining fantastic ideas with even more fantastic presentation.
If you wrote it, I’d be fascinated by Southsun’s travertine deposits.
Narthexia, I think the Aether stuff won’t be affected by this as it was already made to apply to armor pieces. It’s only town clothes to worry about.
As I read it, and I could be very wrong, the skins will still act as free applications after the patch, and using them at that point will add them to your wardrobe. So you should wait to use them if you can, in order not to spend transmute charges. They are changing traits and such too, so you might actually want different stats.
However, if you’re sure of the stats you want now, then you may as well do the skins now, as they’ll still be in your wardrobe later once you log in on the character wearing them. You won’t lose the item off your character, it will merely get duplicated into the wardrobe.
Again, that’s how I read it. I have my own points of confusion on what’s coming.
Apparently it’s a widespread glitch which has people briefly seeing other people’s screens.
Curtis, thank you for that. So here’s a question: Do you intend to introduce more clothing-like armors down the road that can replace what we had? If not the exact styles, then similar ideas (or even better really-look-like-stuff-people-would-wear-including-pants ones)? Those could be designed for the new system. You’ve already got metal looking armors for Light (see: Aether male). If the lines blur more and we get some looks that don’t seem meant for brutal bloody combat, that could undo the harm of losing the current options.
I can see the spores still germinating for years to come but the Alliance defenders on them are foolish. Sure, it’s nice to have a vet source for daily vets, but the surrounding events with Vigil engineers don’t make sense. Nor do I see the Krait still pushing the spores out when their big ol’ tower is all gone boom. The spores should be showing up wild, maybe just in the small beds of them instead of giant Toxic-defended stalks.
I believe that was their admonition to do it before the patch so you keep all the skins.
… not that I have the faintest idea what items I ditched stats on for looks.
(edited by Donari.5237)
The FAQ said Splitters would turn into 5 charges (stones are 3→1 and crystals are 1→1 so 1→5 is darn nice).
I am debating getting splitters so I can have the temple gear looks unlocked as I’ve covered over most of them, but that seems pricey and right now I frankly have little interest in spending gems due to the town clothes issue. I can just pay karma over time if I really want the skins.
I think a lot of my disappointment comes from having thought I’d be clearing inventory space thanks to the Wardrobe. But knowing that swapping looks during RP will be prohibitively expensive for a few minutes of changing clothes means my bags will still look like this (my clotheshorse Necro):
Not sure if this has been answered yet, but concerning the new wardrobe system, if let’s say I have a gasmask skin which was applied to an heavy armor piece, will the same gasmask skin be avaible for light and medium armor ?
Same question goes for the other living story skin like the molten gloves which you could only get in one armor type.
I’ve asked this in a couple of places myself. My gasmask is still pristinely unapplied as I never wanted to commit to an armor weight for it. Will the apply-to-any-weight items retain that flexibility from the Wardrobe? Will it matter if they’ve been applied to a specific weight? (I happen to have put all the Jubilee masks on light armor).
That is a question I’ve had too, not specifically the helms but anything with shared skins. For instance the “Cabalist” chest has differently named versions depending on which vendor provides it but they all are the crop-waisted long full sleeve thing (female version). Surely they will not clog up the wardrobe area with all the variants that are exactly the same in appearance.
And, more crucially, the gas mask. That’s a one-off item that I can only apply once. Will it convert to all three armor weights from the wardrobe?
I’m also very happy with most of the changes, with the glaring exception of the town clothes (and the smaller exception of my disappointment that I’m not saving bag space on costume armor after all since the point of it is to swap to it for short scenes and that’s not worth spending charges). I’ve posted already about how this is the first time I’ve ever seriously considered asking for refunds.
And now, reading this thread, I’m realizing something. ANet might fix this. And if I got refunds on items no longer for sale … and they fix it so I could have used the items properly after all … my bitterness would be epic.
I’m fine with the fact that I bought multiple Fancy Winters and Cherry Blossom Shirts etc. They’ve been very nice on my alts. I might want a refund on my unused Executioner’s set but I’d let that ride.
Except they’re taking away the use for which I paid, the mix and match wardrobes for my characters who don’t always wear the same clothes and certainly don’t gad about in full armor when socializing in town.
And very much except they just this month had a sale on old items such as Rox’s Quiver. I bought two of them! I already had one on a warrior from when they first appeared, and this month I added one to a ranger and put another in the bank for future use. ANet darn well knew this change was coming when they did this month’s sales. I’m glad for the people that didn’t already have the skin … but for me, well. Yeah, I’ll want to get my gems back from the two new quivers.
(Oh, hmm. Right now back skins need to be applied to a white strap if you don’t have a back piece yet. Will that change in any way with the new wardrobe?)
But that is what we’ve always been doing…using stones/crystals to apply a new look to our existing armors. Nothing is changing in that regard other than consolidating stones and crystals into a single item, plus you do not need to destroy an item to apply its appearance to another item. This is much better in every possible way over how it was.
Actually, what I’ve been doing is filling up enormous amounts of bag space with armor pieces to use as RP outfits. And my thief has the exact same stat items with 3 skins, Monocle, Hood, and Conquest Helm so I can swap freely between those and still be combat ready, as well as multiple same-stat exotic chests. Swap freely being the key.
So this new system might help with a few things, like making me willing to use my gas mask at last, but the promised inventory space savings are falling far short as I might as well keep everything as separate items so I can alter my look moment to moment as RP requires.
Speaking of the gas mask — what about it, or Mask of the Queen, or other items that currently can be applied to any weight of armor but then get locked to that weight? Will they remain free-for-all in terms of armor weight once in the Wardrobe?
Post your best clothes combinations that will now be turned into one outfit!
Appeal to the Designers Hearts.
Oh, I have a few … this is only a sampling of looks I’ve put together for my alts.
I’ve never asked for a refund on any gem purchase, not once, and I bet I count as one of the “whales” in the store. I’m likely to now, however, especially on my multiple town clothes that won’t even be useable for RP any more.
Now … what about the BLT Weapon Trader skins? I spent a lot of tickets on those, as well as gold on the TP on yet more skins, so I don’t know how they can say what I got from the gem store chests, but it would be lovely to get tickets back for double skins like my two Lovestruck Daggers and two Lovestruck Foci.
Hmm, I have a spare Executioner’s unopened because I split up the pieces but loved the boots. Now I’m quite saddened I won’t be able to use just the gloves or boots, but that’s not my question here:
What happens to outfits split up among characters? I have cooks and pirates and executioners etc with the pieces that suit specific alts. Likely the first one I log on unlocks the (all in one … grrrrrr!) skin for everyone, but then do I have pieces deleted or what? My Sylvari Guardian wears cook’s shirt/pants with starter boots for her town clothes and I love RPing her furling the leaves into the bark of her T3 when she armors up. Now it looks like that look is gone and having her swap back and forth will cost too much (yeah, I’m digressing back to that, sorry).
Thanks for clarifying that toggling items doesn’t cost charges … but wait. Do I still have to have the item in inventory? I can’t just have a statted item I wear and then swap out freely as to the skin, I have to burn a charge for each skin application? I might as well just keep my bags full of gear, then, so I can have a fighting set and still put on RP outfits.
Also, do I need to use my unbound skins before the patch to get them in my “library” of skins?
The thing is the reason I have bags absolutely crammed with gear is that I swap around for RP. I don’t have 50 exotics, I have 50 things from apprentice boots on up, and if I’m RPing running a shop counter I’m in plainer clothes than if going out to a fancy dinner. I can swap looks just by changing what’s equipped. And I can do it multiple times in a row to show my looks to others or to illustrate changes to my character during a scene.
Do I now have to pay a charge per item for every swap? Or is this a one-time unlock for a charge after which I can change freely to the “bought” looks?
Like I said … charges to unlock, cool. But charges for each use? NOT COOL. That will savagely reduce my ability to swap looks. Could really use clarification.
I just got home to a real computer so I could watch the video. It looked like every single item reskin used charges. Right now I have bags bursting at the seams with all the looks, especially on my clothes horse necromancer. Clearing that will be glorious. But …. now if I want to change clothes on the fly, do I have to use up charges every time? Or is that only for when first unlocking the look? This infinite wardrobe will actually be more restrictive if I have to burn 6 charges just to put on evening wear and then 6 more to look right for combat, as that will make me highly reluctant to spend the resources for a few minutes of RP.
As a corollary, should I be binding all the skins I have in my bank now, to save on charges, or won’t that matter?
