You do get gift boxes from it at the end, as well as off to the side at the end of each round. And the game itself is fun. Not that I’ve farmed it; I’ve played 2 or 3 sessions very recently, was lucky enough for a guildie to be in my final session so we could Mumble about what was going on.
Still, it wasn’t hard to have people in there working on defenses and killing toys.
That would be wonderful. +1! Though I wonder how it would interact with my other hope for ground targeting, to wit, centering aoe on your current target rather than on where your cursor happens to be (as suggested by others in past threads). Since I move with my mouse my cursor is not free ranging unless I stand still to target.
A hotkeyable toggle to elect whether it does range adjustment or target centering would be awesome.
scratches head I could swear just about every white drop or white armor from the vendors is the starter set. And that I got the same look in multiple drops all the way up until level 20 when I was ecstatic to get a new skin at last.
Please don’t take away my acrobatic leaping. I love it so. It even lets me do gymnastics in RP.
Plus the whole point of a Thief here is to be hard to catch. We’re quite squishy if hit.
I don’t know how hard to do this would be, or if it would lend itself to abuse, but I’d love to be able to give gems as gifts. A thought as to how:
Keep the same gem buying interface but add a field to enter the recipient’s account name. By default it would be yourself; perhaps you’d toggle a box and type in the account you want rather than your own.
As a bonus, have it generate a game mail (or an email) to that person “So and so has given you such and such an amount of gems.”
Man, my XMas shopping would be so easy!
I also historically have played ranged casters. Before the BWE’s I -knew- I’d never play a guardian. Boring paladin crap, not for me. Then some time in the beta process I rolled one just to try it out.
Now my guardian is my second 80 and is perhaps the least squishy character I’ve ever played. Sure, she can be defeated, but she lasts an immensely long time in situations that would drop my main (Thief) in seconds. I’ve found a weapon combo that allows for fast zippy fighting.
Otoh I thought I’d have an Engineer as one of my top characters and after trying it a bit I don’t even have one in my 6 characters. So you really need to try them all for yourself to see how they feel in this game. You just might fall in love with something that you dismissed based on preliminary information.
I don’t think you need one of each. Could be 3 snowmen if that is what you have to spare. I am not 100% sure but I think I used 2 snowmen and 1 something else.
It was doing the same to me. Somehow by just fast tapping the aim key I got it semi aimed at some mobs and then shot at them without further aiming and suddenly it completed the phase. But the camera rubberbanding and frequent dismounts from the tank were quite frustrating.
You can always make another character with the items, of course. The thing is that if you want them on an alt you have to do a series of transmutes on the items (see other threads for details), which involves having them in the bank, and it will save you some steps if you already have them.
Not that I understand deleting characters. I love all of mine and it’s like pulling teeth to make me get rid of any of them in any game.
They did not, just cogs. Along with other neat things.
Not to -anyone-. I bought all 5 in the store so I could make tonics. Of course, I used up all my darn mats and bought some more for around 2 gold and did 12 tonic attempts without getting any tonics. So I still have 5 frames and a lot of cogs using up bank space.
I did like the idea of endless tonics. Alas, they remain but an idea for me!
Indeed, I was just reading this thread and being amazed there was a pvp version while awaiting the patch to finish .. and bam! PvP version in my mail!
Going back to the OP’s gracious thanks: Yes. I’ve played holiday events in many a game and ANet has delivered fun in spades. They clearly love their product and want us to love it too.
Which I do. Thank you, ANet. You’ve made my holidays brighter.
-laughs- A choir bell killed me. True story. I saw the Reddit stuff and decided to test a song or two on a consumable bell. Unfortunately I lack anything resembling musical talent, so I was just tapping the numbers by rote off the list. For the Star Wars theme there were useful spaces between numbers to indicate pauses.
Well, I -do- have some skill in copy-typing. So as I hit the numbers, I also instinctively hit the space bar rather than just pausing … and I’d chosen to be on a ledge over a long drop in Divinity’s Reach. Next thing I know I’ve jumped forward to my doom. Alas, the bell despawned.
On the bright side, before my demise I could tell that the Star Wars theme was very recognizable on the bell once I got the right speed of ringing the notes.
I did it with jewelcrafting in LA using mats I’d gathered over time. I wasn’t even trying for the achievement, it simply popped up after I leveled up about 5 times.
For price, I have a guildmate who’s found some guides and has leveled multiple crafts to 400 for under 2 gold each. My jewelcrafting isn’t even 400 yet; since it seems you can get 10 levels per 400 points of crafting, I guess I only raised it 200 points for my survivor. I might have had some points already in for running around in the world, of course; as I said, I wasn’t doing anything but getting into the zen of watching JC skill rise so I wasn’t tracking achievements.
I’ve found it only works in inventory. It will always split the stack in half but typing a new number will adjust it very quickly.
Back in beta I announced that Altdrag Splitstack sounded like a great Norn name. Either someone else also thought of it or they heard/read my talking about it, because a bit after launch I made a big tough Norn Engineer whose looks I really liked only to find the name was taken. Goodbye, my Altdrag. You are missed though you never lived.
Still, it’s been a great way to remember how to divide items. Now if only I knew how to buy a stack of items from a vendor instead of clicking Buy 10 or 20 times. Or to set a number of items to make in crafting (the up/down arrows do not work, it makes one thing and stops).
We have a running joke in our guild about the suburbs, thanks to a few guild gatherings at the Lion’s Shadow Inn in east LA.
NOTHING EVER HAPPENS IN THE SUBURBS.
(( Oh man I wish I weren’t finding this at the end of a tiring day. I’m a criminal defense attorney rather than a civil attorney but I find this to be pure gold and I salute the OP for starting something grand.
Please don’t shoot me, Sven Bow. I’m one of the non-slimy ones. ))
Completing a zone does you a lot of good. Plus you don’t have to go to a zone only at your current level, thanks to downscaling.
Best way though is with friends. Especially if you’re all RPing. Running AC Story as a way to delve for a lost magical weapon (to explain how you got that exotic), or exploring your way to jumping puzzles to simulate pirate treasure searches makes it all tremendous fun.
I can confirm that you have your current look and can tweak that. I used a kit to change my Sylvari’s leaf style and glow color, didn’t have to touch anything else. Though there’s a bug where even with the lightbulb off your vari won’t glow — I had to use an empty slot to quickly make a vari to check the name of the glow color I wanted.
I have both a warrior and a thief. I find myself dodging much less on the warrior, though to really shine on her I should dodge much more often. I’m just spoiled by the Thief’s rapid endurance refill and extra things like Roll for Initiative, and the Warrior is darn tough to hurt even if she misses a dodge.
I also sucked big time at dodging back in beta, btw. I got a Naga HEX mouse and put the arrow keys on the buttons and now I can just shift my thumb for a double tap. It improved me immensely (I am much too right handed to do a lot of left handed keyboard control, so WASD is just not in the picture for me).
I did 12 tries, including about 2 gold for more Glue, and didn’t get a single endless tonic. Oh well.
Tarnished Coast is NA, has a lot of people during EST prime time (my playing time) and my guild has west coasters that keep going past my bed time. It’s an unofficial RP server and has had a real winning streak in WvW of late.
It might be too full to get in but if you do manage it you should not have any problem finding people all over the world.
I didn’t find guardian hard, but I spent most of my time learning the game on my thief. That plus having to quickly scan new skill sets when I picked up things like ice bows taught me how to get a feel for what a skill does in a hurry.
Though it really helps to go into the hero pane and read through the various weapon skills once you know enough of the game to understand the tool tips. Do that, and unlock all the skills on a weapon before you rotate in the next one, and you’ll find the set you like. I really like maining scepter/focus with a swap to sword/shield because those weapons move fast and light. But sometimes I have to use a hammer (Lovers fight in AC Story) or staff (bandits in butler path in CM) and it’s good that I opened up and learned all the skills.
My warrior’s settled in on rifle/greatsword, more for the visceral satisfaction than for any theorycrafting reasons. Plus they fit her RP personality. I’d say warrior is even simpler than guardian for the basics — but hanged if I can match the expertise of a warrior charr I know that can solo AC explorable and usually lets a few of us tag along just to speed things up.
There’s always a someone who’s a master at the profession -grins-
Don’t worry about leveling up, both of those will be fine for that. Leveling just sort of happens. Guardian really is good for a lot of things though (I have an 80 Guardian and a70 Warrior). The game isn’t meant to rush through to 80.
I do find myself grabbing my Guardian for any dungeon runs, though. She’s so useful in so many ways compared to my Thief main.
I love this game very much. Enough that I have trouble understanding why some people are bored or frustrated and -especially- why they ascribe evil motives to ANet. Of course, I’ve had a ton of RP starting many months before launch, an awesome thriving guild on a highly populated server, and I happen to prefer cooperation over competition. Having played GW2 I cannot force myself to log in to my previous MMOs.
Yet some people aren’t going to find it to their taste. That’s fine. There are many other entertainment options out there! No need to vilify anyone either for liking it for for not liking it.
Side note re Skyrim. There -is- an Elder Scrolls Online MMORPG in the works, though it’s set long years before Skyrim and so there are no dragons. No dates have yet been announced but I think some time in 2013 is possible.
As others have complained, so do I. I like to get clothes for alts. I like to have guildies link outfits that I can then view to get an idea of their look. Simple enough to have any bind on acquire be unpurchaseable if not equippable, hey?
Please give us back our window-shopping!
This may be intended rather than a bug. After all, the hat as it is -exactly- matches Gandalf’s hat in the Hobbit.
Still, it would be the perfect topper for my vari’s cook’s town clothes if I could dye it to match, so I hope this is a programming error rather than a plan.
We got Smash the Town — you have to kill the trees too, and sometimes they don’t act like you hit them. I found on my thief I did best with my 1 skill, of all things, the little pines shattered most satisfactorily. The whole thing is super easy. I did get defeated once, on my Guardian (to my shame) when I got surrounded by skritt away from my friends. But it’s doable just by scattering all over the terrain to grab the objectives, without needing to coordinate.
Instance entrance is north end of the Grove near the exit to Caledon, look for the dungeon door icon on the map. Departing can be done by the little button on top of your minimap, or relogging if that’s bugged.
I hope it resets each day! I’ve run it on three characters — only got the big reward the first time, and chose the Glue since I’ve found wadding elsewhere. I’ll need more for my little Ventari.
Go Tarnished Coast! But did TC have to get so famous just now? We have a wonderful guildmate who accidentally transferred away last weekend while trying to introduce her mom to the game … and tomorrow is when she can come back -if- it’s not full. We need her and she can only come back if TC has an opening
I have a friend who just has slow loading, but most of my guild has the connection error/retrying. I do wonder if it actually IS retrying! Or should I periodically close and restart?
It goes to show that people really are decent if you give them a chance to be. ANet’s done a stellar job designing a game that both rewards cooperation and maturity and attracts those who value such things.
I thought I was an older gamer at 47! Not that 63’s old, if you keep your mind agile, as gaming helps you do -grins-
That’s the best use of cooking, Decrypter! Right now I am RPing a picnic with someone using food I cooked in game as props. Heck, I’m 400 chef purely because my character turned out to be a gourmet cook in pre-launch RP …
I’d like all the OP ideas, as well as entrees and side dishes!
No, once bought, the karma’s spent. At least between monthlies and dailies it’s not hard to get more karma!
I think it does. “Hovers over the city for one day only” does imply a day, not an hour.
Zeefa, while it’s not automatic, you can keybind townclothes to toggle on and off. I have mine on Num Pad – and it works anywhere in the world.
I really want those clothes. On all my alts. Good thing I’ve only bought gems for a makeover kit this month, and thus can justify a large self-present of gems! Or maybe I’ll get my husband to buy me gem cards at Best Buy. He’s always wondering what to get me >.>
One advantage to a new monitor would depend on your card’s ability to support two monitors. There’s no reason to junk the old one; you can just set it to the side and move windows back and forth between the screens.
Then you play the game in full screen windowed and keep your web browser or Mumble or whatever visible on the other screen for easy reference!
Other than that, I’d usually choose a better card over a slightly better monitor. You may be doing well with it now, but if you must wait a year for your next chance to upgrade, you may start seeing performance issues. I’ve had monitors last for years (I’m not terribly picky about them as long as I can get highest rez and no flicker).
Icing also works for white, it was my go-to until White showed up in a dye pack I bought in the gem shop. Iron does pretty well for black, though on some metals it gets very reflective blue. It’s decent on most leather, though.
The various Midnights are very dark, albeit with strong hints of color. Such as Midnight Yew, which has a lot of green in it but looks black from a distance on the right materials.
I still want actual Black (or Abyss). It makes such good accents to an outfit.
Between your own characters or to a friend?
To a friend you mail them and enter the amount in the bottom of the mail panel. You need to click on the number and keep in mind the number is to the left of the type of unit so if you put in the far left you are sending gold; the far right is copper.
To an alt you deposit it in your bank at the lower right. Click deposit, enter the amount, click again to confirm. The alt can then click withdraw and enter how much to take.
The GW2 Roleplayers site linked above will be a very good start for you. Also your OP shows a great awareness of what RP has to offer. A couple of points to add to what others have said:
If you play a brat or a jerk, make sure you are extra nice in OOC interactions so people know it’s the character being that way. And exercise some meta-control (that football on the chess board comment is dead on). If someone else is doing a scene important to them, don’t try to take it over.
TC does have some griefers. The least imaginative of them will, almost invariably, find a group of people talking IC and get in the middle of them and /dance, often stripping to do so. It’s mind boggling. Would they do that RL? I’ve even seen someone do that at an IC wedding (in WoW). Talk about rudeness and ruining screenshots! Anyway, it’s reportable if someone is clearly griefing your RP with random spell detonations, verbal or emote idiocy, etc. And ANet takes it seriously. More often you’ll have people stop to RP along with you if you are RPing in the visible world.
How much RP is “enforced” will depend on your individual guild. In my guild, gchat is OOC and full of silly banter and comments about the game, along with occasional swearing and good-natured insults we don’t actually mean. Mumble is OOC for coordinating dungeon runs and the like, with guild members encouraged to use in-game /say and /e purely IC, and RP encouraged to take priority over PvE/PvP without stopping anyone from doing all the PvE/PvP they want.
1 – there are many servers, though once they implement the Guesting feature the only reason to choose one in particular will be to do that server’s world v world PvP. I don’t know which other ones to recommend as I’ve only been on Tarnished Coast since beta, but TC is the unofficial RP server and very highly populated (NA — if you are in Europe you’ll want an EU server).
2 – Leveling isn’t important, it will just sort of happen to you as you explore and do events and gather and craft and help out at “hearts” which are people that need tasks done. They become vendors once they like you.
3 – healing isn’t important. Everyone heals themselves, with minor boosts from some professions (the term for “class” in GW2). But Guardians and Elementalists have the most support healing ability, for what it’s worth, and Necromancers are awesome at taking conditions (debuffs) away from their friends.
4- order of the dungeons will come as you get letters when you get to the right level. The first one is Ascalon Catacombs at level 30 (Story Mode) and 35 (Exploration Mode, must have one person in party who’s done Story to get into Exploration). Every 5 levels you can access more dungeons. Exploration carries the story forward, letting you into different areas of the dungeon and having a setup that accounts for what you did in Story.
-PvP: I haven’t yet done the arena style of it, where you get max level and gear and it’s all about your skill. The WvW side is actually fun (and I HATE pvp in other games!), being a large set of maps to run around in capturing keeps and using strategy in how to cut the enemy supply lines.
Playing EST with a normal M-F job to use up my mornings I’ve never lacked for people on Tarnished Coast. It’s the unofficial RP server, does reasonably well in WvW, and while there are some griefers there’s also a lot of great people.
It tends to be Full a lot, so actually getting onto it may require some odd hours on your part if you decide to roll there.
Attended/Looted/No Mail
Did entire event on Main with only one character, no disconnects or relogs.
I also appreciate how much you care about making things right for people. I have -not- received a chest, but also don’t qualify as I did the whole karka event and looted the chest in game. I am very happy to see other people getting the chests now, even the ones that technically shouldn’t … but then I love seeing other people open presents, always have. Guildies have been linking today’s lovely things and I’ve gotten to see some nice skins as a result.
ArenaNet, please don’t listen to the rabid belittlers who claim you are in some sinister way out to ruin their lives. It’s been obvious all along that you love your game and want your players to love it too. Today’s effort is part of all that. Are you doing perfectly? No. Are you trying to? Yes. And what more can we ask? /salute
I would assume you only send in a ticket if you qualify as someone who should get a chest. Not just because you want a second batch of loot.
I’m in a party in Salma District, but the party portraits are gone and so are all my guilds. I have faith it will all be restored.
If you have a sylvari, the Cooks Clothing from the gem store actually looks pretty good imo. I have it on my female vari, dyed in leafy greens.
Yes, they do need to give us a zillion town clothes options. Over time, I sooo hope they do.
Other threads here and in other forums have given me the feeling that this simply doesn’t exist in PvE. Oh, how I want that hat … one armor site said Mount Maelstrom had the set so I completed that zone, but it turns out not to have the helmet part.
Maybe for Wintersday. /dreams
When you open your refrigerator’s vegetable bin and wonder want you might be able to use for a discovery .
Yes! I go into the grocery store and I see various fruits and veggies and start thinking about the game and want to collect them all. I don’t even LIKE fruits and veggies that much.
