Is same reason why when you buy a car brand new and then 3-4 years later you sell it you are lucky if you even get half the price for it that you paid when you bought it, products devalue over time

No, its not the same at all. When you buy a used car, you pay for the car and everything attached to it(which if you’re paying less then half the original value, problably hasnt been that well maintained and regulated), you don’t buy a new, just released, state of the art sterio and get the regularly updated and well maintained finely serviced car with all the lastest upgrades for free, which is essensually what gw2 is offering.

Actually, what’s being offered for free is a car that has no climate control or radio, no trunk/hatch area, and a throttle so it can barely reach the speed limit.

Armor does remember, piece by piece. That is, if you have your chest dyed silver and blue, and another chestpiece that is dyed black and purple in your bags, if you swap them you will be wearing black and purple on your chest in the channel configuration assigned to that piece of armor.

The “easy” way to do it would be to just have your chosen dye combination apply to every outfit you equip, but since some of them have different numbers of dye channels, even that would be problematic.

This is the current behavior. While some outfits only have three channels, the four dyes you select persist from outfit to outfit. Sometimes the combination continues to look good, sometimes you want to change it up because you want the dark/light areas to make sense.

At the very beginning of outfits, they “forgot” your dye choices any time you changed outfits and everything went to default. The current saving of the four, and keeping it character specific, is a vast improvement but it would still be nice to have per-outfit dye schemes for each character.

I’d love this; it’s a much bigger problem the more dyes you have — I am only missing 33 dyes total at this point, all of them BL specialty. For now I keep a Word document that I can open on my second monitor with a list of the dye schemes I prefer for each outfit for each alt and a * to denote things the alt might actually wear in character in the right setting. For example,

Donari Mal Di Bette
Arcane – Pyre, Flare, Abyss, Glint’s Isolation
*Arctic – Pottery, Tarnished Silver, Cocoa, Umber
Balthazar – Antique Gold, Shadow Abyss, Pyre, (any)
Ceremonial – Cinders, Flare, Olive Oil, Moss
etc

with the dyes listed per the dye box
1 2
3 4

Then I can use the search field to find the dye in the dye panel and apply it. Any time I get a new outfit I spend a while finding good dye schemes for all the alts that would conceivably ever wear it (eg I did not bother picking dyes on the Anise outfit for my female charr). I put them in the Word document and then I can get ready for RP sessions much faster.

Of course I can change up the dye schemes and if I find one I like as much or more, it gets on the list.

Welcome to the new players!

I may have just hit a slow time last night (9 pm to 10 pm eastern) but while a few new faces popped up in Shaemoor they mostly just ran off without seeming to notice all the offers of aid.

The only new one who stuck around was a self-confessed hacker who teleport-ran around near the waypoint and laughed off repercussions because it was a free account.

I will try again later today unless I have tabletop to attend. Possibly I’ll hit up Caledon this time.

I love being retired I don’t have to make any arrangements beyond making sure I’m awake at the projected launch time.

For those worried about game-killing bugs, well. This is ArenaNet. They have an excellent track record on deploying new content. Even the launch of the original game was smooth as silk, three hours ahead of schedule for headstart, and it let us hit the ground running even on a quite full server like Tarnished Coast.

Now, there could be annoyances due to the sheer volume of players rolling over the content in the beginning area, but I’m fairly confident it won’t lead to the types of server shutdown horrors seen in other games on expansion day.

Let’s note that Mr. O’Brien relayed a message from the artist that designed the outfit that it was “a work of love.” She worked very hard to make something nice for us, knowing it would not be paid for by any of us. I don’t think she’s soulless, or wants consumer satisfaction reports.

So, Madam Artist: Thank you for the lovely gift! It dyes very nicely and is full of solid attention to detail. All the parts look good together, you paid attention to racial needs of ears and tails and horns, go you!

Also try saying different lines every now and then. “New? I’m here to answer questions.” “Hi, welcome to Tyria! I’m boycotting HoT for now.

All by yourself? Astounding.

I know that some definitions of “boycott” can imply just one person deciding not to buy, but really in general it’s a concerted, organized effort by a large group of consumers. Probably because one person militantly refusing to buy a thing has no effect on the business if lots more people do readily purchase it.

So you’re electing not to purchase, for now. Good. That’s likely a sensible decision on your part, as you won’t buy until you’re sure you won’t regret the expense. Buyer’s remorse can lead to some ugly posts … but if you’re not part of a big group pointedly not buying due to dissatisfaction with the company making the product, you’re really not boycotting.

But then, I don’t really care about maximizing my gold balance.

Do you have a screenshot of your outfit panel? Perhaps you are just overlooking it, it would seem like a really odd bug if the outfit doesn’t unlock when using the item.

You can also use the search field and type “Royal” in it.

If you have all the outfits, the Royal Guard is midway down the left side, a sort of golden armor figure icon.

Donari.5237

Are you asking for weight-specific outfits or for three different outfits per release?

The former means that people that want a different weight look (battlemage, froofy warrior, whatever) can’t get it. The latter means three times as much work (and likely three times as many gems to complete the set, which doesn’t bother me but could hurt some wallets too much). Let’s look at your premise, though. “Outfits are easier than armor, so please triple the output of them.” That’ll triple the time to make them, triple the time between releases, and bring them up into the resource-use range of making armor after all, thus removing the whole point of their being easier. While I’d love more customization and variation, I think I’d rather it came as armor than as outfits. I’m pretty sure the same team makes both, right? Let’s keep their time balanced

@Pomdepin: I do like the racial variants we get in Cook’s and Wedding (and in the never released Scholar and Smith). 1000 gems is fine for something that elaborate, in my opinion. Perhaps you can spend the amount of RL cash you think appropriate and buy gems with gold for the rest? I couldn’t do that, I am not loaded down with gold, but a lot of people manage it somehow.

And making raiding a main feature? WoW says: welcome to the competition boy. And its never a good thing… For the competition…

Are you so sure it’s fixed rather than capped? Dungeons are five man instances but some of them are soloed. It’s not likely to mean you can’t get in the door until there are 10 people standing there.

Even if I understand the fundamentals of build design beyond “oooh, shiny trait,” I still don’t think I’d have enough data to begin to figure this out now. What are the boss’ attacks? How much cc has to be applied how fast? How flexible do the builds need to be? Which masteries will help, which will be vital? Are the raids designed so any profession can fill the needed roles? I know they don’t want people to have to wait for that one key person to show up, so if it turns out a raid must have five Guardians, well, I presume they will then tweak the raid to change that.

Remember, Colin said they would have some linear raids but also that there would be dynamic-event style ones. So things might mix it up a bit and not be the same every time you enter the instance.

Alphabetical distribution based off account names. They haven’t even finished Bs yet.

Nope, I got mine two hours before you posted that and I am a D. I wonder if it’s by hours played? I know it’s not by account age since lots of 3 year vets don’t have it.

Or if it’s just random batches culled out of the roster?

I really do like it, I’ve spent all this time playing with dye patterns on all my alts. Curses, though, the way I dyed it on my human mesmer, who happens to be my fractals alt, I need the Fractal Capacitor now. So I need to farm 1300 fractal relics or so … and say buh’bye to over half my ectos once I have the relics. Darn you, ANet! /shakes fist

At least I do want to edge on up to Fractal 50, so there’s extra motivation.

You’re both saying the same thing. OP just said it less clearly. There are only two BWEs left, for a total of three.

I think ANet knows how much time they need. They’re likely working overtime and yes, rushing a bit, but I expect we’ll have something playable and fun at launch with reasonable implementations of all intended content.

And bugs, yes. We’ll have bugs. But the ones that block progress will be addressed. (Yes I know there have been long standing bugs in some event chains and the like; the game overall however has been quite playable).

I still have some concerns about an influx of free accounts but the FAQ has allayed almost all of them. Knowing what category of items will be on the limited set available to sell on the TP will likely allay the rest.

No one gets to play HoT for free until the next expansion. Which I assume is at least 2 years away.

There is truth in that, Yamialexa. I was confining it to that one word and not exploring the array of things that can go wrong with transliteration. I’ve failed in it myself, though.

I honeymooned in Vienna a couple of decades ago. We took a bus-tram thing up through the vineyards to an old monastery, then back down. On the way down I used my even-then-rusty German to try to tell a young girl who was sitting down against a bulkhead that she could stand up and grab a bar near me to look out the window. She stared at me in bewilderment and asked in a very puzzled tone, “Wie, bitte?”

Once we debarked and I could pull out my little dictionary, I realized I had told her she could form an opinion and have the flu. Because “Stand” and “Grippe” do not in fact mean “Stand up” and “Hold on.”

I often wonder if she thinks Americans are insane thanks to that encounter.

Just make sure you get a good site. I remember one person freaking out about the timing of a beta stress test because they thought they were three hours earlier than the west coast, not three hours later, no matter what we told them in their panic thread. I think they are too busy to do something like that. This saddens me. The 2012 BWEs were extra special thanks to the end events.

Heck, I’d be happy if they just brought back the 2012 events. Except for this: back then we were all in beta if we were playing. Now that they are mixing beta testers with live players, they can’t do anything to alter the core areas and screw with people just playing the game normally. I’m not sure they have room in VB to do anything bizarre (though the Wurm idea does strike my fancy).

Hey guys, I’ve been a bit out of the loop regarding the HoT pre-purchasing. What exactly is the OP doing now that you get upon pre-purchase? It’s not a beta wknd I don’t think, and looking on the wiki I don’t see what immediate benefit he might be talking about.

The OP never said anything about “immediate.”

But with Deluxe you do get an immediate title and mini to use (and a glider skin that you can add to a beta alt if you save it in the bank), and with Ultimate you get those as well as 4000 gems at half price, albeit after a few days to make sure you’re not a fraud.

I think what the OP gets is the joy of knowing it will get to play HoT for sure.

What's your favourite specialization so far?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

Reaper, because I haven’t had a chance to try Daredevil yet.

Chronomancer: I need to travel a lot more on the learning curve on this. I’m handy enough on mesmer but I haven’t internalized Chrono utilities or how to employ the F5 yet. So I don’t feel effective.

Dragonhunter: It was fun enough and not hard to figure out, but it’s annoying to have to convince foes to run over the traps, which I have to put down at my feet even though I want to LB at range. I feel the traps and LB don’t have synergy, so I’ll need different builds to make this spec work.

Tempest: I haven’t tested it. My Eles are my least played and I don’t see that changing with the elite, so I wanted to focus on what I use most (Mesmer, Guardian, Thief) plus Revenant.

Reaper: It’s so much visceral fun. The shroud saved my butt numerous times, both when it auto-deployed and when I deliberately triggered it for extra oomph. I generally enjoy Shouts for their instant gratification. I loved the look I put together for my Reaper, enough that I might just have to make a Norn Necro now (I already have human, sylvari, and asura). I really like all the animations and visuals.

I’ll try out Herald and Daredevil this coming weekend for sure. I’m keeping my Reaper, and I’ll use my Revenant to test Herald, so I may delete the Chrono and DH to add in Daredevil and Tempest. We’ll see. I might want to stay focused mostly on one thing this time.

Daredevil could well become my favorite. It suits my Thief’s style so well. I’ll have to see how easily I slide into the mechanics of it.

edit: Revenant isn’t a spec but it is a new thing, so I’ll mention that it’s another learning curve one for me thanks to having to juggle all the weapon/legend combos and keep in mind which one of what I’m using moment to moment. It feels more stance dancey than Elementalist now!

Since we can’t hotkey-swap out traits it could get a bit clumsy if you want to run fast to a fight location but then select a different GM.
