Just added, Total Makeover Kit 122 gems (normally 350).

Also Heroic Booster
1 for 105 (150), 5 for 445 (637), 20 for 1470 (2100).

Not that I recommend using gems on minor consumables, but if you want to, hey, it’s on sale.

Mordrem Invasion Feedback [merged]

I had a thought this morning on how the whole thing could feel much more rewarding:

At the end of each vine combat, a chest spawns in the middle of the fighting area. It contains blooms. Your participation level determines how much: 5 for gold, 3 for silver, 1 for bronze. This encourages people to stay and finish the events and to work at them to boot. Add on the daily plus the stacks reward, and the flow of blooms will feel much more worth the effort and let people feasibly get more than one vendor reward if they want.

I’m sure it’s too late to implement that this weekend, both for coding reasons and for the wave of complaints that would come from those who’ve already been farming, but for future invasions (if any) this could solve a number of issues.

Of course I’m no game designer and there could be some huge exploitable flaw in my suggestion.

Also once you have at least one Bloom you can double click it to have it show you where the merchant is in the map. The invasions are in Brisban, then Kessex, then Diessa, always starting at half past the hour. After Diessa they skip an hour so you get 1.5 hours to the next Brisban event. The invasions themselves are all over the map that is active, marked with red crossed swords, so you don’t need a waypoint, you just need a zone (and of course having all the wp’s in the zone is useful for rapidly reaching events).

The upper right of your UI will tell you which zone is active, or about to be.

I’m putting together an RP canon story for one of my alts who is not a combatant by nature and gets trapped in a Mordrem invasion. Here are some shots I’ll use for that (the ones in Kessex) along with others from oocly doing the other zones (and one shot where another player seemed to lose his head in fear):

It should be in the upper left corner of the map when in game, upper right (I think) on the character select screen. It may be that it won’t show for you until you are a certain level because they redesigned things to avoid all that “confusing” information for new players.

Name suggestions for a new reaper?

in Necromancer

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

If you do a norn, take a look at http://www.vikingsofbjornstad.com/Old_Norse_Dictionary_E2N.shtm — I name my norns from that by deciding on a meaning of a name I want, finding it in English, then finding the Old Norse version. I won’t use odd accented characters in my game names, so I look for plainer words, I say them out loud to myself, and I compound them and tweak them to sound good to my ears. Hopefully I’m not ending up with something that someone from Norse lands would laugh at.

My norn Reaper is Myrkkilli, roughly meaning Dark Slayer from that site, or possibly Slayer of Darkness; currently I have the name reserved, and might add a surname if it makes sense for the live version. My norn Ranger is Ylfa Aetlaveidr, or, roughly, She-wolf Fated Hunter. Not that I intend them to directly have those meanings in their names … my RL name is Ellen, which comes from Helen, or “light,” but I don’t go around claiming I’m the embodiment of light. It just gives me a quick way to thematically name a norn in a manner highly unlikely to duplicate anyone else’s name.

For Sylvari I like to go to http://philriley.tripod.com/otngarthur.html and click names a lot until the syllables sink in enough that I can compound my own Arthurian name. I got Andret directly from there and Briamor by compounding, then since Briamor’s a false name he took on when he joined the Whispers I figured out his real name (now reserved with a placeholder alt) as Morbriath. I purely made up Ysethe (my ‘vari necromancer) but based it on a handwritten list of Arthurian names I put together back in college in the 80’s from library books on the subject. No internet back then!

The name needn’t reflect the profession, keep that in mind. Very few parents name their kids with enough prescience to make it appropriate to the kids’ careers ….

[Suggestion] Name Claim Contract

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I don’t want to rename anyone I have but I’d love to be able to claim my Norn Reaper’s name for when I remake her. It’s not a big deal, though, as I won’t delete her until ANet does it for me and then I’ll have 24 hours to make her with that name. Ditto with my Charr Revenant, I like his looks enough I could be persuaded to make him again even though I prefer playing sylvari and humans and my chief RP idea for a Rev involves a sylvari.

On the other hand I think my Asura Berserker’s name turned out really nicely but as I’m not likely to make a live Asura warrior I’d want to claim the name for eventual use without using a character slot for it …. same with my sylvari DH, I like the name I gave her as just in general good for a sylvari. But them’s the breaks for coming up with good names for throwaway alts, I guess!

Did Anyone Unlock Precursor Mastery?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Donari.5237

I think you’ve missed something, Serious, actually. The point is that the new precursor crafting system may include items that are currently available and tradeable, and if that news got out people would be pouncing on them now. It’s not that people want to make precursors in beta, it’s that they want to know what is involved so they can get ready in advance of live launch.

My original question really was just curiosity as to whether anyone had done the unlock, and that’s been answered with a no, thanks to the lack of Pact Tyria mastery points. I was wondering more from a testing viewpoint than wanting to get a leg up, and I think it makes a lot of sense that they withheld the information at this point.

Hmm, if you bought HoT and your account didn’t upgrade you might want to contact Support. Back at the first beta stress test those of us who had original style accounts and made beta alts got “reverted” to a non-beta account when the event was over, and since the original account system no longer existed we instead got the digital upgrade including the legacy armor. I think it partly depended on our original version; I had the CE so I got the full boost.

Anyway, it could be that once they delete the BWE2 characters from your account they’ll auto-upgrade you, but you might still want to check with Support to see if you’ve fallen through the cracks. I’m sure they’d prefer to swap you out of the old version if they can for their own administrative comfort.

Type your text, look at the bottom for the red button “More posting & formatting options…” and click that. Scroll down to the bottom and click the Browse button. That brings up a directory of files on your computer. If you’ve saved the image or gif to your computer, all you need to is select the file. Then it will appear as a thumbnail in your post that can be clicked to expand to a full image.

If you need more than one (please don’t do multiple flashy gifs, think of the people browsing forums on their phones!) then you hit Preview instead of Reply, scroll to the bottom, and do Browse again to add another.

This is exactly why it is level 80 content. “I’m bored once I hit 80 and I want more to do.” ANet has added in things to do at 80: work on Masteries and skill up Elites. The whole system is there to ameliorate the bored-at-80 issue. If you got it all unlocked at level 21 you’d be right back to wanting something new once you maxed your level.

Now could someone do something about the dye preview bug so that I could see what I’m doing? The electros liked to possess everything when I tried. ;_;

If you mean where the Hero Panel shows you in bizarre dye combos that aren’t actually on you, I’ve found that if you toggle the panel off and on again you’ll see the correct dye set. I have to do that every time I’m selecting Outfit dyes.

I wouldn’t have minded having some Electro drop in my lap (maybe not the Peach, I doubt I’d use that one) but I don’t need them enough to spend extra on them. Heck, of my five 3rd bday dyes so far I didn’t select any Electro. I did try the five pack on sale, best I got were a couple of 18 silver green dyes.

I have to wonder what the last couple of days of sale will hold. If it’s not an avalanche of things it will feel like the big ol’ celebration sale has just sort of petered out.

My problem with the event later in the day is that there just wasn’t any salvage to be found. I wondered if it had a certain amount of spawns per player and didn’t reset for me between cycles.

Someone in Map Chat said that if we saw a flopper walking and not fighting we should follow it as it was heading to salvage, but I don’t know if that meant it would “create” some when it went to steal it or what. I had to give up on helping with the event after I ranged all over that plateau and found not one box, when my first time in the event they were all over the ground.

[Feedback - Berserker]

in Warrior

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

Whoops, I missed posting this in my various elite feedback postings earlier today. For what it’s worth from someone who barely touches warrior:

Berserker:
This was both more fun and squishier than I expected. That could have to do with my layering on a bit more berserker gear than I have on my two warriors. I don’t think I really figured out how best to use the F2, and I didn’t enjoy how fast Adrenaline drained away even though that’s necessary for balance. I kept Signet of Rage because the head butt seemed more gimmicky than useful to me.

Once I realized that the F2 burst depended on the equipped weapon, I got a little more effective by swapping out to the one that would do me best in the situation. I was sword/torch and longbow so I got the fireballs and the ground disks of fire. I’d elected to make the smallest cutest female asura I could for Berserker and having her shout in high pitched rage “You can’t stop me!” was adorable.

I can’t say it really changed my warrior play, not that I use my warriors very much. It pretty much just added a few more options to adrenaline use. Likely I should have written this on Saturday when Berserker play was fresher in my mind; I really can’t recall the utilities and their effects other than the rock punch which looked flashy but was mostly just one more damage dealing button.

I say that even though I am normally a proponent of realistic weapons. I can’t stand the “surfboard” greatswords. But the shroud scythe? It’s not meant to be a realistic weapon wielded in a realistic fashion. It hits me just right in the aesthetic appreciation area of my brain.

Obviously that’s only my subjective opinion. I just hope my opinion prevails this time and we get to keep this beauty intact

Are you talking PvE? Because I don’t PvP but in PvE I had no problem landing the skills. The hylek and mordrem were eager to get belly to belly with me. Toss a 5 to blind and hurt ‘em, drop a 4 to expand the pain over the next bit of time, spin to win with a 2, toss in a 3 now and then. Hop into shroud to spin out more wins, drop out again to beat things up with the GS. There’s a Shout that makes your next attack(s) unblockable, fire that off right before a GS 2.

I was handling groups of mobs any one of which could be death for my Daredevil, Berserker, or Tempest.

About not figuring out the Mastery UI without third party info: Yes, it is a bit complex the very first time you look at it. I had several occasions of explaining it to others in Map Chat, but it could be explained in two or three sentences when I went into full detail.

The thing is, in BWE1 when the Masteries first opened up I got a whole bunch of Hint popups that pointed out exactly what to do in the UI. Did you not get those this time, or did you reflexively close them without reading as is easy to do as a veteran player if you forget there may actually be new info coming? They are definitely in-game information with no need to go look it up anywhere.

I suppose it would be nice to have a way to cycle through Hints again, maybe have a UI one could bring up to click through the “lore” of Hints previously received instead of having to memorize them on first reading.

The thing is that getting to 80 is ridiculously fast compared to maxing level in other games. It can very casually be done in well under a month, which isn’t really time for most players to get to know the ins and outs of a profession as it is.

Elites and Masteries were designed in to satisfy those who wanted post-80 progression. They are made to open up the game further once someone’s figured out the earlier stuff. That’s what above posters mean about “missing the point.” You’ll play at 80 for a lot longer than it’ll take to get there, hopefully. There’ll be plenty of time to explore the horizontal progression, which will be there in order to keep you interested in and adding to your profession.

Revenant Changes Based on BWE Feedback

Herald:
I did not test this very deeply. I forgot to put on a shield, in fact. I tested Glint/Sword/Sword in Metrica, very low level inquest mobs, to figure out the mechanics of the utilities. Overall I am finding Revenant a bit too complex to quickly figure out thanks to having to dance between weapons and legends and would prefer to level one up in a regular fashion to slowly layer on the skills; I think I’ll play it much better if I do that.

So my feedback as of now lies in the visual: I really like the effects of the Glint skills, with one exception: the runed disk under the Rev’s feet showing that it has one of the Glint skills active. It has an odd matte pinkish look to it, as if it has a fuzzy white layer on top of it. It looks unfinished and a bit ugly to me, purely due to the texture and color. If it were made sharper and whiter, perhaps with a hint of blue, it would match the elegance of the rest of the effects and be more evocative of Mist skills (love that ghost dragon! If only it flew a bit further, to match what Rytlock does when he arrives).

[BW2] Feedback Thread

in Elementalist

Donari.5237

I didn’t try this in HoTBWE1, and only tried it in 2 because I realized I hadn’t made a Sylvari to listen for Mordy chatter and NPC reactions. Of those I noticed nothing new, though I didn’t talk to too many NPCs.

I felt Tempest was really weak and lackluster – that is, until I learned to use the overloads. I was very happy that once I’d gotten each element into overload-ready status it stayed that way until used, and then seemed to remain available with just a 4 second delay on swapping to it (or just to refresh if I remained in the attunement). During those 4 seconds I could still use all skills and utilities so I wasn’t crippled at all, and I made a lot of use of the Fire and Air overloads. Water didn’t seem too handy, perhaps because I hadn’t put on a lot of Healing Power, and I’d need to study Earth a bit more to see what makes it useful.

I was very squishy as a Tempest, and I swiftly ditched main hand dagger in favor of keeping a bit more distance with a scepter. I would have liked the warhorn support skill to do some damage or in some way affect the enemy as well as allies, because it felt less useful than it likely was to blast the horn and see no effect beyond a little ripple in the air. I think air warhorn did do that, actually, with the swirling wind that knocked down enemies along with the lightning zappy ball. But fire only gave might (again, that’s probably a powerful thing for it to do, it just wasn’t viscerally satisfying).

Overall I liked Tempest more than base Elementalist. I have one 80 Ele, seldom played, that always felt much too squishy, and one 60 Ele who is a leveling project and has felt much tougher than the first; he might well make a good Tempest one day, but I don’t think I’ll be anywhere closer to maining Ele/Tempest than I am now. At least Tempest looks more spectacular and feels much more like a master of the elements.

I didn’t test the Elite, I’d seen too many complaints about it. I used tornado instead, and not often. I’ll have to try out some other elites to see what fits well.

Reaper Changes for Next BWE

in Necromancer

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

I loved this in the first weekend, I still love it now. I’m afraid I bug-reported a feature because I didn’t realize GS 2 got an instant recharge on low health foes so I thought it was a glitch I was spamming it on a champ in an event … I really like that change, though, it means adding a bit of awareness to a fight and making decisions about whether to use the 2 or to hold off briefly to avoid the cooldown. I also really like the change to Rise!, because it adds to the toughness of the profession. This weekend I ran through HoT events with Reaper, Berserker, Daredevil, and Tempest, and everyone felt so squishy except for Reaper.

Reaper played with wonderful fluidity. I used GS/Staff and Rise, Suffer, Nothing Can Save You, and Chilled to the Bone. I avoided the heal shout because I don’t care for heals that depend on hitting enemies, plus the heal Well benefitted allies as well as myself. I was able to dive in and out of Shroud pretty much at will. The change to Shroud 2 let me stay in the fight (and not go plummeting) much more easily. I didn’t feel it was OP like Fiery Greatsword, at least I didn’t see such amazing numbers off it that I wanted to pin every enemy to a wall with it. It did make a nice gap closer.

And of course all the animations are jaw dropping beautiful. GS4 is maybe a little off, I am not sure how to describe it. Too matte? Too pixelated at the edges? I’d like a little more elegance in the spiral shape and a more vivid green to it, I guess. But it’s still wonderfully ominous and all the others are perfect, both in and out of shroud.

As someone not very good at keyboard dancing under pressure, I appreciate the more measured pace of Reaper play. Daredevil was super exhausting, Berserker and Tempest somewhat so, but Reaper gave me time to think about my moves without feeling any loss of effectiveness.

I already have three 80 necros. I feel a pressing need to make a fourth because I love my Norn Reaper and the look I put together for her so much. I’ve already been daydreaming up her backstory so she can fit into RP. But meanwhile I’m going to get more and more hero points on my sylvari necro so she can be a Reaper asap in HoT, and I can see Reaper turning into a main profession for me (right now I go to Mesmer by choice for Fractals and Dungeons). This profession is a solid hit for me, a complete thrill and joy to play.

Here are my thoughts on DD. Keep in mind that while I play Thief a lot, I’ve never figured out some of the basics I see others mention using, so this is from the perspective of a fairly casual Thief compared to all you dedicated theorycrafters:

I was very keen on this since my RP/LS/SW main is a Thief who goes for agility and stunts, not backstabbing and poison. So I ran a DD for around 7 hours, mostly in HoT and then in one Sorrow’s Embrace run.

Hoo boy is this an active spec. My arm was aching by the end. I had to pay constant attention to position and use all the skills all the time. I think the only fight I ever stood still in was killing Breachers, as I learned that if I ran behind them the Mordrem pretty much ignored me and I could just shortbow the heck out of the Breacher (possibly a design oversight in the fight).

It certainly played differently from my core Thief, especially as I had no stealth. I’m used to a stealth heal and Shadow Refuge and it was unnerving to lose those. I ended up putting the stealth heal back on, and swapping in Shadow Refuge when I was trying to explore around hostile Hyleks. In terms of effectiveness in combat DD felt pretty strong … but then I am fairly poorly traited and statted as a rule, can’t even solo escort a SW pack bull, so anything was going to feel stronger. (Donari was my first character, and very much statted and traited by what felt good at the time and matched his RP, and I haven’t really updated him because I love him as he is). I really enjoyed the extra dodge and initiative. I think that with those plus full use of skills and utilities I almost never had to wait for initiative to build up before I could do something useful.

The staff: I liked the stunbreak leap back except that it felt very odd to be using it only to have to run back in at the foe to get back in melee range. I suppose the 2 and 5 and steal skills would be useful there but it was still jarring. The animation on 5 was also a bit odd (male human). I couldn’t see the planting of the pole; I just was suddenly hovering horizontally in the air and then shooting feet first at the foe with a weird physics-defying flip in the middle. It didn’t feel martial-arts fluid.

In fact all the animations other than the flurry of blows and palm strike felt a little clunky. This is the only elite so far with subdued special effects, so the body animations should make up for that by giving us fluid grace. Impaling Lotus manages that, but is just Heartseeker which we’ve had all along. I’ve seen others suggesting different animations; I particularly liked the one about having Staff 4 be a sweeping motion crosswise along the ground in front of the DD rather than a petulant golf swing. Biff! I’m kicking sand in your face! So there! I primarily used the Lotus dodge at least in part because I didn’t care for the dash animation and it simply felt more agile than Bound (which also was just using the staff 5 animation with the same awkwardness I described above).

Utilities: I didn’t use Bandit’s Defense though I should have, I like that kick. The wrist daggers were fun but I will need a lot more practice to use them effectively. I think I only got interrupts with them by happenstance because of the time pressure to fire them off. I’d like them more if they worked like a Mesmer mantra and could be preloaded and fired at leisure, then with a cooldown before loading them again. The immobilizing dagger was another that I didn’t find a superb use for, probably because I was mostly fighting either packs of mobs and keeping just one at bay wasn’t effective or fighting champions who were immune. I absolutely loved the flurry of blows ending with a palm strike, I just had to get up next to a mob that wasn’t moving a lot. The elite proved much handier for PvE than I’d feared, especially with the second part that flipped the foe on its back, even fairly large mobs. That just felt fun.

Overall I was quite happy with DD and Donari will be turning into one come HoT. I just hope the mechanics and animations can be made a bit more fluid.
