RESOLVED -- Dry Top Rift Disabled?

Yep yep, I looked at the table but I was so darn sure that the slot I had to dial to XI was the second one that I only verified XI = DT. Healix saved me. Even though I got my daily done with three other options, I made a point of rift hopping to DT the right way just to fix it in my sludgy brain.

I thought I’d use my Class 2 Rift Stabilizer to head to the top of the DT JP for today’s daily. But setting I-XI does nothing. Other settings do things (XI-XI took me to either Frostgorge or Iron Marches, and another setting I don’t recall, maybe II-XI?, took me to the other of those two). However, repeated attempts at I-XI failed, at several different rifts, both in and out of combat.

Has ANet decided it’s too much to let us get that JP via rift?

EDIT: Resolved in quick order thanks to Healix.

You can get the puppy separate from the bundle as well, CE. I got just outfit and puppy as I didn’t care to shell out for the other items.

I feel you on the tools. I find myself only using axe and pick because the sickle is too slow, and I already could gather unbound. Huh, suppose I should go talk in the tools threads about all the ideas to turn them into skins and such, what happens to the gather time — does it stick with the skin? But I also digress!

Cannot receive mail or group invites

Are -you- F2P?
What method was he using to mail/invite? Sometimes the right-click dropdown method doesn’t work.
Ways to do a group invite: Type /invite Name of Player. Right click their name in your friends list and use the drop down. Do the same right click on name in a chat window where they have typed something, or in a guild roster. Target them when they are next to you and right click the target portrait.

Ways to mail: Type in character or account name in the To field, eg Oathkeeper.1453. Right click on name in any of the same locations as mentioned above, plus if you have managed to group, right click on the portrait in the UI upper left or on the name in chat.

Note that I often find myself blocked from inviting someone by one or another of these methods, as in the option just won’t appear. Sometimes it is because they are already in a group. Sometimes the game is just being weird and I have to find their name in a list or chat to click on, or target them next to me as you noted.

For mail I will ONLY send things by right clicking a name somewhere. I’ve heard too many stories of valuable items mailed to a random person who ran in front of the sender as they were clicking on their intended mail target, or they just spun their camera and it acquired a new target as recipient without them noticing. I right click, select Mail To, and do a quick glance at the recipient field in the mail window to verify.

Gathering tools: Next Generation

Wouldn’t there be the same concerns? Buying these unlimited items for your tools’ upgrade slots, then something ‘better’ coming along?

I think the suggestion allows for that. It just left out a method to easily swap out what’s in the “special” slot so one can choose session to session what extras one might want to get from nodes.

Certainly I would hope the idea isn’t that you are permanently locked to whatever you put in the bonus slots (or lose the upgrade if you change it), especially if these are gem-bought.

I also support the general idea of keeping all gem-bought utility useful as much as possible — I mean, sure, sometimes some fundamental game redesign might make something obsolete, and ANet’s generally been good about compensating players for that — and think this is a well thought out way of mix-matching the various features of the gathering tools.

I really like it as an outfit (and highly recommend Heirloom Dye on the female coat), with some minor caveats:

The ragged hem. I don’t find it unrealistic, hide edges can do that even in finished garments. But it reduces the appeal for my dapper Daredevil.

The balding. I know you can’t help that. Maybe there should have been a small bandana drape from the back of the hat, similar to the Ringmaster Hat, to help conceal the shaved pate of characters who normally have plenty of hair.

The dye channels, especially on the male version. It’s true there are a lot of fiddly bits on this outfit (yay for attention to detail!) and only 4 channels to use. But the cloth bow tie matching the leather straps is odd, and combining vest and coat loses a lot of chances at contrast. Combining pants and metal fittings greatly reduces options on metal color since interesting hues for the metal become clownishly garish on the pants. And then there are the boots, which share with the shirt and bandana.

In general having vastly different materials lockstepped to the same hues makes it very hard to get a plausible, coherent look. I think I might have had the straps, boots, and gloves share a channel. Put shirt and vest in one channel but have the shirt part affected more brightly, perhaps, to get some contrast there. Give the pants their own channel, and link the cravat to the metal fittings (which violates my rule of thumb on mixing materials, but the cravat is smaller and makes more sense to be super colorful if desired).

Now where in all that does the coat go … ? Lol. Maybe add to the pants. Or to the vest, as currently, but again with the different effect of the same hue on each.

I didn’t study the female dye channels as closely due to lack of time, but I will note that having coat and chaps share a channel gives an overall monochrome look to the outfit since that covers most of the body. I’d rather those had been somehow split.

As to “there’s no real loss in deleting characters,” I’ll note that this depends on how much you care about the character birthday gifts. By years 3 and 4 you can get some really nice dyes that would otherwise cost you hundreds of gold. So there’s no real loss in a recently made alt, but if you have one that is several years old you should factor in the loss of the accrued birthday time before deleting.

GS necro "AFK farm" in Bitterfrost?

in Living World

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

The freeze blast is similar to something ESO just put in to combat afk farmers at dolmens (stone circles that spawn waves of mobs starting every 15 minutes or so). I don’t recall the details as it was just something I read in patch notes and haven’t tested for myself, but the gist is that if you stand still in range of a dolmen during a mob spawn time, a charge grows under you and explodes for massive damage on anyone else who wasn’t moving during the charge’s growth. I haven’t yet seen forum comments on what impact it’s had on the “rubber banders” (so named for holding down their attack with a rubber band while they leave the computer, it seems, not for any in game lag moves).

Perhaps making it a debuff on a non-moving person in a berry patch’s area might work better than a berry-centered constant cycle. That way you don’t get big ground effect circles interfering with the view unless someone’s being naughty, at which point it’s super easy to spot the naughty person. And also have it affect only the debuffed person. It’d be rather annoying to run up to a berry patch and have to wait for the blast to finish, while dodging mobs, just because an afker had to be warned off.

Easy rotation class??

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Donari.5237

If you want simple but satisfying, go necro-Reaper with GS and shouts. The sword is a tad slow but hits very solidly and the shouts satisfy the need for faster reaction. Also it all synergizes really well. Plus I trait for the automatic shroud when taking a killing blow which gives me an extra lifeline.

Altogether I feel the designers nailed it on their goal of making the reaper feel like an inexorable, unstoppable monster. I’m mostly in exotics with a mix of condi stat sets and I wade into almost anything and stay up longer than anyone around me.

A typical rotation for me on entering a group of mobs is Rise!, Nothing Can Save You!, Chilled to the Bone! (possibly with You are all Weaklings! mixed in, unless I’m saving it for a stun break). Then drop GS4 (possibly 5 first if I need to gather the mobs closer) to blind and chill, GS3 to make them vulnerable and take more condi damage, GS2 to aoe the heck out of them. If I hit something with GS2 that is 50% health or less, I have no cooldown and can repeatedly spin to win. Stuff still in my face? Hop into shroud, which refreshes very quickly, and use it to freeze, fear, and aoe even more. I have a lot of CC handy for breaking defiance bars even before I weapon swap to access more skills for the purpose.

I’m probably nowhere near meta, but I’m having so much fun!

I also wouldn’t take achievements and masteries out of the hero panel. I do kinda like your idea of giving the Wardrobe its own toggle, along with the expanded dye preview options. The friends request thing would require a pretty major coding change, though, since the system isn’t set up to allow you to refuse a follower.

Actually all of it would take a ton of under-the-hood work. But a lot of your suggestions look well thought out as to the desired end-state. Hopefully ANet will be inspired by what you’ve done here.

New Infinite Tools, why not separately?

Donari.5237

Oh kitten. Did the watchwork pick debacle teach them nothing?

I’m honestly not familiar with this, what is/was the issue?

It is the only tool that gives an extra resource when used, in this case, sprockets. Those can be sold to other players. Many were the P2W shouts that went with the debut of that pick.

Here the extra resource is a currency, but one that can be turned into coin.

That said, I do like the tools but watching the Dulfy video it looks like you get the foraged resource at the end of the animation which means I’ll still prefer the golf-swing ones (Consortium and fire) for the smoothest gathering of clumps of plants. I’ll have to decide if the bundle is worth the cash given that I don’t like the sickle and don’t need the loose magic gather skill.

The bundle is 300 gems cheaper than the separate ones although if you don’t want the other two it’s not actually saving you anything.

Ok — does that mean we can buy them (the new unbound magic ones) separately? The OP suggested otherwise and I’ve had a sick headache all day that has kept me from going in game so I relied on that in what I posted.

Oh, I use purely game music. I think maybe one time I had Siegfried’s Funeral playing during some RP about a guildie’s character who’d died in the attack on LA.

Theme songs are their own thing, a musical description of the RP personality, not necessarily played while in game.

I can help on NA, but as you posted 4 hours ago I don’t know if you still need help. I wouldn’t need payment. All I’d ask is that you have your guild members ready to go before you get me joined up with you as it does get frustrating to offer help and then stand around for an hour waiting for others to be ready. That means you will want everyone to have the jumping mushrooms mastery, have the mission ready to launch with a guild officer with permissions handy to launch it, and have a total of seven to nine players for the claim.

As to when I’m available, it’s pretty much every afternoon (eastern time) and most evenings (still eastern). I just need to know that you need me, or I may be off in another game or helping a friend with other GW2 stuff, etc

How to get to Hearth of Maguuma?

I’m not sure you can enter Verdant Brink via the Silverwastes sw portal as described until you’ve done the relatively short HoT LS intro chapter, which will hand-lead you through plus open up masteries for you, which you will need to do the HoT map content.

However, one option you would have for skipping the story would be to join a guild that has the Lost Precipice guild hall. Go to the guild hall, and run south and up the stairs to the portal out to Verdant Brink. You’ll be in a small area that you can’t really leave without knowing how to glide, but if you scroll the map east you’ll see that you’ve unlocked the entry WP for VB.

For the story, what you do is open your Hero Panel, click the star tab for Personal Story, scroll to HoT, and tell it to activate that chapter. You’ll have to get into the Silverwastes and head to the south entrance of the Red fort to enter the story. From there you’ll be led through to VB, including doing the intro story in VB and getting your first mastery point, ready to spend on gliding once you advance your XP enough in VB.

Oh my God, you just reminded me that the Asuran hero from GW1 was voiced by Brain XD

Actually, so is the male asura PC in GW2, iirc.

Taimi is small — though she has been growing since we first saw her — because she is a child and because she has a degenerative disease in her legs that may be overall stunting her growth. Compare her to the progeny running about in south Metrica and you will see that she is not, however, the smallest asura in the game.

Waste to have too many character slots?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Donari.5237

I have just a couple I use for game mechanics stuff — my daredevil main for story/RP, and one of my reapers for achieves and helping other players with things. Oh, and my fractals geared chronomancer, and an asura mesmer who can get to most all the JPs. But overall I have around 20 level 80’s, multiples of most professions, made for looks or for RP. Some of my RP characters haven’t seen RP action in a long time as my guild has mostly poofed from the game, but they still exist as characters and can cameo very easily.

Sometimes I cycle through flax or other farms on them, but even if they’re all parked at the farm it takes something like an hour to do a full rotation and that gets tedious. So it’s the clarion call of RP that gives many of them their time in the sun.

(EA) mastery points

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

The most concise tip I can give you is to google for Dulfy Verdant Brink, Dulfy Auric Basin, etc, and click on the results that mention mastery/achievement guides. She has videos separated out into timestamped sections showing how to get to each communing or chest-opening mastery point. She also has guides on how to get various achieves that give mastery points.

That’ll cover you for HoT MP (including in the 5 new maps). For core MP, you should look through your Achievements panel. Anything with a red MP icon near it holds an MP for you. The wiki and/or Dulfy will tell you how to get that particular achieve.

The reason you need to do this rather than being led to things is that once you have the MP from something, it no longer tells you in your Hero Panel that it gives MP. So if for example I were to try to lead you around, since I have most of the MP already I’d have to constantly ask you to check your panel, tell me what still has points, do my own wiki/Dulfy lookups to remind myself where to go, and it would take you longer to get the points than just looking them up yourself and then perhaps asking for help with specific ones that need a group.

-Ability to set dye search results on the trading post to only show colors we don’t have. Perhaps the dyes could also show their color in the search results instead of requiring a mouse hover to reveal them.

Good news, you can accomplish this almost as easily by a system already in game: Set your dyes in your hero panel to By Set and toggle to show locked dyes. Scroll to the bottom, there are all the dyes you don’t have yet, and you can right click each one to see it on the TP.

Oh, I didn’t mean “most of the 3-node spots,” I meant “most of the spots.” Now that I’ve made the backpack I don’t have a pressing need to amass orchids, so I’m fine with letting them trickle in during normal play without going out of my way to get a few more.

I’ve never found Trahearne’s voice boring. To me it’s been more the vibe of the understated Brit trope. Perhaps it’s because I grew up with a brilliant, rational father. So the cerebral, reasoned approach resonates with me.

On the wishful thinking side, it could come even sooner. It’s a different team, so possibly the delay we had on Five would not have pushed back Six. (Not that it was a true delay, it was still released in the originally planned cadence window, just at the tail end rather than the start).

However, I lean to early July for it unless it’s another very special episode they want to get right, certainly possible given it’s the lead-in to the expansion story.

Not being a theory crafter, and being someone that kind of enjoys condi builds without min-maxing them, I’ll answer from my limited perspective.

Before condi builds were made viable, the only build players conceded to be worthwhile was berserker. Talk about boring, you either had to stat up as a glass cannon or take forever to kill things. Now there are two main prongs of building rather than one, and ANet is pushing the second one to keep people from going back to “berserker or gtfo.”

Best as I can tell, you haven’t said anything not already asked and debated many times (as you note). The answer tends to boil down to ANet having decided not to expand player races because in this game race is cosmetic. They’d have to make a new starting area, work out what to do about the 10-80 PS and all the voice acting involved, work out what to do with the LS chapters and all their voice acting, rework armor to fit the new race.

All in all, they’d have to put in enormous amounts of work to let people essentially have a new skin, with resources they time and time again have shown to be stretched to their limit.

Every good hero should have some epic theme music. This has always been mine. O Fortuna in the 4th movement. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmSAeaPccPg

Excellent choice! I first ever heard that music in the mid ’80’s in the movie Excalibur. We didn’t have internet back then so it took me a while to track down what it was. I got cassette tapes of it (didn’t have CD’s either) and played the whole Carmina Burana over and over. When home from college I played my parents’ LP while reading the album jacket for the lyrics … it was long my exception for not liking more “modern” classical music.

I can’t use it as any of my characters’ theme songs, though, since it is indelibly bonded to King Arthur and his knights in my mind. (As is Wagner’s Siegfried’s Funeral Music, played at Arthur’s death).

I’ll point out that the stat selection is limited. Basically two choices, I think. I’m not 100% sure they are better stats than at-level gear except that I don’t bother buying rare/exotic for sub 80 alts for the most part so these are a bonus.

If I remember to look for them in the bank while leveling … mostly they are just filling up slots in my bank, to be honest.

For acquisition, leveling to 80 creates some of them as level rewards.

It does already. There are account bound items with selectable stats even at lower levels that out-stat things normally findable at that level. Some are craftable.

Now, they don’t keep scaling up with level like the WoW ones. On the other hand, leveling in GW2 is so much faster and easier than in WoW that there’s no huge need for scaling gear. Especially since you can generally do just fine with drops, leveling rewards, and occasional cheap TP purchases as you push up towards 80.

Player skill level/class knowledge decline

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

OP, do you think perhaps it’s not that the overall skill level has decreased so much as that you have increased your own skill and knowledge so now what stands out to you are the mistakes rather than the masters? Sort of a confirmation bias?

I fenced in college. When I began, watching a bout gave me only a confused impression of rapid blade movement. After a few years, I could see each blade action as a separate thing, distinguish good foot and blade work from bad, notice stance problems, and tell who scored the touch first in a close bout (we didn’t use electric scorers back then, since they meant being tethered to a complex thing that reeled the line in and out as the fencer moved along the strip). I could really appreciate olympic fencing, and criticize people at or below my level. It’s not that the level of fencing skill in those around me had declined, it’s that I had gotten better and could see the mistakes that had earlier been outside my notice.

Could be what’s happening to your perceptions here.

Can we do something about mastery points?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Donari.5237

For getting into (and staying in) DS:

Around 10 minutes before map reset — check timers for when this is, but it is half past the hour every two hours, so depending on time of the year and your time zone it will be either on even hours or odd ones — hop into the map and check LFG in the appropriate section. Join a “taxi” squad to make sure you aren’t hopping into a squad from the previous round that forgot to stand down.

Find the commander in the squad. This is easier if s/he has considerately moved to Group 2. Right click and join in map, even before reset.

Wait for reset. Die. Or don’t die, if you are an appropriately traited necro/reaper. As soon as you can, right click your commander again. This means be alive. Either get ressed fast, or if your load screens aren’t hugely long, wp from the death pile to the Pact Camp wp. If you have the option to Join again, you did not end up in his/her map and need to immediately do so before it fills. Note: I have never not been in the commander’s map when I started in his/her map before reset.

Tldr: Get there 10 mins early, get in a squad, join the commander’s map, join again after reset if you didn’t end up in commander’s map.

OR, if you have a tag available, tag up as a taxi yourself and chat in friendly manner to those around you and in Map chat waiting for reset. Then you are guaranteed to have a big group with you at the start of the new map Of course then you may find yourself leading a lane … I go north lane when that happens, lol. But it makes sure the map organizes and completes!

Congratulations! That is a very nice video. Lovely music, excellent pacing, and a good solid look at the armor as well as the lengthy process of making it.

New player: some help with choosing a class

The main thing about Revenant is that it is somewhat less flexible than the other two. That doesn’t mean it’s completely simple to play. You are juggling two weapon sets and two utility sets and need to remember which pair you currently have up and what it does moment to moment. You also need to swap Legend (utility set) as appropriate to swap the skills or at least grab a second heal fast. But overall, from my point of view, it’s a lot more constrained in feel. Even though I almost never change up my build on any one character, I still feel like I can do a wider variety of things moment to moment and have a larger choice of utilities to mix and match together.

I’m not a raider, so my fave of the three (of any profession, actually) is Reaper, the Necromancer elite. Regular necro is a lot of fun too, but Reaper is what I use to just jump into packs of dangerous mobs without huge fear of losing the fight. All the GS and Shout and Shroud skills flow beautifully together. Guardian/DH … why on earth they chose to make the special weapon long range and the special utilities short range I don’t know. You can take pieces of the profession and make a solid build, but as a whole it fights itself.

All very subjective to me. From day one of this game it’s been clear that each and every profession will have its die hard admirers and its players that run screaming from the very idea of using it.

What you may want to do, though this won’t give you precisely the same options as a level 80 in PVE, is make a starter character of each profession (only need one slot, you’ll delete and remake in between) and go to the Mists lobby (see wiki on structured PvP for how to get there). There are golems set up for you to attack. In sPvP you are auto-leveled to 80 and given all skills/traits/utilities as well as gear in your choice of stats (the idea being that PvPers cannot outgear each other, only out-skill each other). A small portion of these will be either tweaked differently from PvE or not even available as PvE combinations, but you’ll get a very good feel for how each profession moves and plays. You can switch things freely while there and test all the weapons and utilities you want. This may help you figure out which profession you like most.

I already have Mesmers parked at Not So Secret, Southsun, Dreamdark Enclave, and Sharkmaw Caverns

For those telling him/her to do Dark Reverie or whatever the Southsun one is called, note that such things are covered. The question is which JP that isn’t one of those would be most helpful to the most people (kudos, OP, you are an awesome person full of kindness).

(There area also lots of other sources of spirit shards, so it’s ultimately not that important to most people.)

I don’t give a darn about the spirit shards as such. But I have to say, much as I puzzled at people complaining about not getting them from leveling, ever since I completed the raid track and have been zipping through “leveling” again, I have renewed interest in doing content. Something about that big level-up glow, and seeing the xp bar moving very fast, makes me feel more rewarded for my time. So I’m far less puzzled now, and I sincerely hope ANet doesn’t ever again lock it behind specific challenging content.

I’d be interested if it did the ANet hallmark of upending expectations. However, I don’t think it’s at all likely (certain Revenant Legends notwithstanding). When you scrap an early draft you don’t then turn your story back into it.

Per the extras on the Zootopia disk, the original Zootopia story was much darker, with shock collars given to predators as a coming of age gift — get too emotional, too predatory, ZAP. They had it practically in the can before they scrapped it, reworked it, revoiced it, molded it into what we saw on release. One doubts they would then do a sequel that uses all those dark themes they decided didn’t work in the first place.

Similarly, ANet chose among concepts. The ones they benched would no longer make sense in the lore as it has developed.
