There is sometimes a bug with things like chrono wells that make them appear angled from the ground and persist. Unless that thing is there every time you go look, it’s probably just some profession’s ground aoe that glitched.

Which anniversary backpack to use?

If you’re able to bank it and wait to decide, you may wish to. A lot of us will be getting our 5th birthday presents around August 25. Once those start showing up, we’ll know if we get another backpack choice. At that point you can use the information to decide — if you’ll get another in a year, then it’s just a question of which you are willing to wait for. If you don’t then you want to make sure you pick the one you’ll use the most.

Appreciated! Of course, now I have to get over the “Undyed backpack, dyeable wings” schism. Woe. 100% first world problem.

That matters less in this case. The backpack itself is a nondescript grey metal that fits close and small between the shoulderblades — when the wings extend and more bits extend in the middle then they can dye and the “hub” can dye. One can easily see it as a glow covering the metal case rather than a jarring color change. Or as an opening of the case to extend glowing parts.

OP wants pics, though, so I have a number of dye schemes (generally I have a palette for each alt that I try to use, or a dyeing style in the case of my sylvari necro who just likes bright colors and has no aesthetic sense in matching them). Here are the ones that happen to be in the outfit on character select. The background badly washes out the force glow but on the other hand the armor dyes themselves show up much better than is easy to accomplish in game.

The only thing like that right now is if you watch the PS UI as your companion is finishing an instance, you’ll briefly see his/her next step named there. If you either have memorized the PS steps or can quickly /wiki the step, then you will know generally where to go and can tell them “no no no, the armory is THAT way” … I’ve been taking a friend through his first ever PS run and have had to “no no no” him several times from following the green trail and get him to just head to the right map.

I agree that outfit-by-outfit dyeing would be nice. However, I’ve gotten around this issue by keeping a Word doc listing each alt, any outfit they’ll wear, and the dye order for each. For some of them the same scheme seems to work fabulously across most outfits, which aids in situational switching.

At worst, I just have to check the list and do a quick dye search in the hero panel to get the preferred scheme for a swapped outfit. It’s not super convenient if you need to change on the go but it takes very little time, maybe 30 seconds in some cases.

As to this outfit in particular: It is a joy to dye it. All the details can be brought out, the channels are intelligently assigned, and the hues apply excellently (the force shoulders do take some study to see how they’ll tonally shift the chosen hue). The intricacy of the dye channels means that you can get a fairly different impact from alt to alt.

Some outfits have odd pairings in the dye channels (like boots and shirt, sheesh). This one, however, is just right. Bravo!

On getting HoT: Most of the current things to do, as well as the mastery system and the profession elite specs, are tied to owning HoT. If you get HoT you may well feel you’ve started a brand new game, there is so much content to catch up on at this point.

They could be announcing the next expansion very soon, however. Its purchase will (per previous and still extant comments from ANet that could be changed but remain canon for now) include HoT and the base game. Although HoT’s price has come down a great deal, if your finances are tight you may wish to wait another month or so to see if you can get more bang for your buck. (On the other hand, you might want to dive into learning all the HoT stuff and getting at least one character caught up so you’re able to head to the expansion with everyone else. Up to you and how concerned you are with seeing the new stuff right away).

On graphics: I don’t think so? I bought my current PC in April 2014 and it runs GW2 on max just fine. Mind you I did buy a nice rig aimed at gaming, so I have a good video card and the like, on the theory that I’d rather spend close to 2 grand and have it last 4 years than spend 1 grand every year to keep upgrading.

Actually they did make one change that helped, not hindered, they swapped to a 64 bit client. You might find yourself dc’ing less than you remember, as long as your system handles 64 bit.

For those who would like the math:

The Exo-Pack includes Outfit and Glider Combo and 1 Total Makeover as noted by AP. Price to buy the Makeover is normally 350 gems. So if you buy the bundle you save 250 gems IF you want to buy a kit. If you do not normally buy kits, then buying Outfit and Glider individually saves you 100 gems over the bundle price.

I could see them pulling the first one. The second one, though, goes against all we know of the Elder Dragons. Plus, Mordremoth got woken early so he didn’t have time to spread his corruption as widely as Zhaitan had (which begs the question of what exactly the difference is between a sleeping and waking Dragon if even the sleeping ones have agency in the world).

Not that the Dragons are necessarily evil in the human sense of the word, any more than a human is evil for exterminating insects in his or her home (per most humans, anyway … there are some all-life-is-sacred believers that might disagree). The insects don’t enjoy it but the humans (mostly) aren’t taking joy in their suffering, only in their removal. Bear in mind that per -original- lore/marketing, the Dragons are akin to natural forces like hurricanes or earthquakes. Scarlet triggered a growth of invasive vegetation that instinctively worked to assimilate everything, not a cackling villain. (I know, I know, the Mouth does have a very evil chuckle. Psychological warfare from the Dragon of Mind, perhaps? Meant to defend itself against would be pruners?)

Besides, I’m pretty sure ANet has established that Scarlet was the affected one.

I am also sad this is gone. It was always nifty to go gathering shortly before WvW reset eve with that nice 18% bonus applied. But given my general lack of WvW participation I can’t really complain.

However, I do want to address the “entitlement” discussion. I can certainly see and mostly agree with those considering this definitely in the area of entitlement. Still, the legal concept of “right of way” comes to mind. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/property/advice/propertyclinic/8568033/Property-advice-Right-of-way.html Basically if you walk over someone else’s property long enough without them complaining, you create an ongoing right to do so.

This is not perfectly on point vis a vis the WvW bonus to PvE. But it does point out the concept that if you use something long enough with no one barring you, you gain the right to rely on the availability of that something. So for those who relied on that gathering bonus to boost their mats, I can see their feeling that something’s been taken away from them.

Again, I am on the side of “so what, it was nice while it lasted, game play can change, non-WvWers can live without WvW-created rewards, yadayadayada.” But I don’t think less of those who feel differently.

Your Warband

in Lore

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

The last name is very important (unless it’s a descriptor like “The Furious” which is not a warband name). Charr naming convention has the last name holding two parts: an individual designator and the warband’s name. The warband name can be the start or end of the surname. Corollary: If you name your charr with Blood, Ash, or Iron in the last name, you’re claiming s/he is very high up in a legion. It’s like claiming to be a Prince of Kryta in human terms.

I have two charr. One I made at launch, she was originally Talani Razorburn. She was in the Razor warband (a guild created pre-launch that went on strong for a good while, see image below for one of our patrols/drills). Sadly the GM had RL health issues and had to drop the game, so the guild declined. Combining that with not yet having multi guild chat meant I didn’t do much with her, though she got a fair bit of RP early on.

She’s an elementalist, considering herself ranged support. She’s militarily neat – in human terms, the soldier with the coin-bounce bed sheets and the perfectly pressed creases in the slacks and the neatly placed combat boots ready for super-fast donning. She disdains mice, being very prejudiced against them. And she follows orders very well, needing to prove herself part of the military machine to get beyond the anti-magic temperament of the Legions.

When Razor faded away I ended up doing a makeover on her with a name change. From sleek cloud leopard to bulked up mottled orange and black, from Talani Razorburn to Talani Stormburn. No idea what the Storm warband is about, she’s seen no RP in years, but I couldn’t keep the Razor name when I was clearly no longer a Razor.

My other charr is Reverus Farhammer, of the Ash scouting Far warband. He’s the muscle part, known as “The Hammer.” Something freaky happened on a mission to the Mists (I did post that origin story in the Creative forums long ago) and he became a Revenant. I haven’t RP’d him but he’s ready to go at need.

So now as birthdays come I look at my list. If I am pressed for time I go for the next one on the list, if I have time I do a little more previewing and TP cost checking first.

If they’re botting (which they’d have to be to afk gather seedlings), then submit your shots to the correct section of Support with time/date/server/map info and resign yourself to never knowing if action was taken or not, as that is kept private. If they’re just afk farming mobs that spawn there, then a simple in-game botting report is enough.

Daily/Monthly AP Cap Removal

All AP are is another list of things to do that keeps people playing the game.

I also question the wisdom of removing any reason to play the game, which is exactly what the cap does.

Yes, exactly, ty, 100% +10 . . .

Before I hit the cap in late May of this year, I approved of the cap. I thought hey, it’ll free up that tiny bit of pressure to do dailies.

Now, with my AP total barely moving and my RL getting busier as I’m about to have my mom live with me for 3 weeks — man does that spur you to do a lot of neglected housework — I sorta peek in, decide if the dailies are quick enough to be worth going for the 2 gold, and poof again. I have to get in the right mood to chase longer term achieves. But that 25,674 sitting there is proc’ing some OCD, I tell ya. (25,679? Hard to keep numbers in my head, I just know it’s one of those two since I see it each time I log in and briefly ponder finding just 1 AP somewhere).

10 AP a day was nice progress to trundle along towards the achievement chests without requiring huge amounts of time. Now, meh.

However, I do have multiple email accounts (I don’t get fancy with the forwarding like Silmar does, though). I corral them all in Mozilla Thunderbird. Each one has a different purpose: RL business contacts, gaming, old junk address that I’ll delete one of these days once I’ve made sure none of my auto-pay bills are using it, etc. They all stack in a tab list on the left side of the panel, it’s super easy to flip between them.

Sadly I think Thunderbird may be vanishing in November when FireFox does its revamp to a much crappier version. I’ll have to find something else that works the same way.

Donari.5237

Thanks, I’ll trust your memory on that.

My guy isn’t narcissistic as such. He’s pretty glumly aware he screws up most everything (he’s -ex- Seraph for good cause). When his guardian talents started showing up he used them to bully others until his dad sent him off to Seraph training and service. He no longer bullies, but his magic is strongest in very close proximity to his skin. So it’s not that -he- is selfish, just his power is

So hmm, what does he have faith in … nothing conscious, really. It’s all subliminal for him. He’s a decent guy, mind you, he will spring into combat to help others, he’s part of an adventuring guild. He’s just also a lazy undisciplined slob who’s made his way post-military by taking short term gigs as a bodyguard to nobles that don’t actually need one but want to look important at various social functions.

Anyway, I think he’s worked in RP quite well for years without being a paragon of virtue. I agree with Moonyeti, a guardian could be quite vicious (I mean come on, one of their core powers is burning enemies to death, ew! And those enemies needn’t be evil, it works on deer and bunnies too).

We may never know the details of why Soule severed all connections with ANet (or vice versa). But as far as “stopped selling it” goes, that pretty much happened before it was released. Lots of pre-orders never got filled, nor did the customers get their money back.

I got my disk set many weeks late, I should have had it a month before launch and I got it in the game’s first week when I no longer had time to just sit and listen. But at least I did get it.

I don’t know what the copyright laws are on things like this where the artist isn’t ever going to sell the music so “piracy” wouldn’t actually cost him a dime. So I’m not offering to send digital copies to people. But my usual moral objections to anything close to digital piracy by others are firmly suspended in this particular case given how incredibly shady and nasty Soule’s company was in the whole thing. More power to you if you find someone who knows the rules well enough to find a way to legitimately get you copies.

Guardian alignment question.

in Lore

Posted by: Donari.5237

Donari.5237

Draxynic, source on guardians needing faith in something? That sounds very paladin, but my impression of all the GW2 professions is that they use magic as a tool in their varied ways yet no moral plus/minus attaches to the tool itself. Same way a hammer can tap in a nail or bash in a head, depending on its wielder. Eg necromancy isn’t evil bad horrid stuff, even if some find it squicky, no more than being a coroner or medical examiner or funeral home director makes you evil.

So afaik guardians are just people with access to a certain tool set and can use it how they like. My human guardian is a scruffy ex-Seraph whose powers are “selfish,” in that they heal him and defend him really well but unless he’s close friends with someone he’s not much use other than bodily standing between them and the incoming damage.

Not that ANet has given much lore info on any profession beyond some AMA comments on how magic is passed down and trained. So you’re free to infuse any personality you like into your guardian and just try to keep his/her background and rp within plausible range of the world’s canon.

Valdergare
Ranger, Isle of Janthir

I have a strange feeling that to keep things more GW2ish, you’re more likely to get a krait or largos transform tonic that works underwater and allows combat. I don’t think there are any transformations in game that turn you into something that does not exist in the world in some form already, and merfolk just aren’t part of Tyrian lore afaik.

Also, if whatever form it takes it does sell like hotcakes, odds are everyone will look exactly the same when using it. Same mer-hair, same mer-tail, same mer-skin tone, same mer-channel (oops, ignore that last bit, flashed back to Adam West’s Batman). I don’t see that as a good thing. I mean, I am happy to wear outfits even though they get a bit “samey” but at least I can dye those to stand out.

Something that allows you to get into what matters: the action, faster is “boring”, while something you “can afk on” is exciting? That’s weird logic

So you would favour an edited version of Lord of the Rings where you only see the 3-4 large battle scenes and nothing else? No journey, no explanation, no background?

If Lord of the Rings was a game, and especially an MMORPG, then yes.

Well, actually … LotRO does track the events of the novel with the player story and quests moving in parallel, with occasional appearance by the “main characters” such as Tom Bombadil to save the player’s butt. It is an MMORPG firmly set in Tolkien’s world, no “if” about it.

It also has horses, designed in from the start. But while they can get you places faster, there’s a ton of non-action to do there too. Crafting, fishing, festivals, playing music, just off the top of my head remembering playing quite a while ago. I never got as far as Mordor but I heard tales of what dungeoning there was like — fast runs to the end boss weren’t a thing afaik.

Which is important to a game’s longevity. If all there is to do is get somewhere very fast, beat something up, and pin on the I-WIN badge, why bother?

Ah, you can try. Puffy ribboned heavy armor isn’t so much a thing in GW2 … believe me, I’ve been lobbying for a landsknecht hat since before game launch because my character so needed one.

If you want swords and greatswords and heavy, that leaves out Revenant (no GS right now, though the hammer is hard hitting at range or close and there are some beastly hammer skins — I don’t know what new weapon they might get with their expansion elite). For the most dps between warrior and guardian, you’d want warrior. For the most intimidating look, either norn or charr, bearing in mind that many, many armors clip badly on charr including just having the tail waving through solid metal. Warrior can dual wield swords, guardian only in main hand.

You cannot change race or profession once it’s set, but you can change looks completely, even gender swap, using Total Makeover Kits. So don’t worry if your initial design wears thin on you, it’s fixable later. But do remember to screenshot your sliders in creation and save them where you can find them in the future.

I cannot halp you. I love alts. I’ll be surprised if you find enough people who stick to just one character who can answer this from a point of view that matches yours.

But I will say my -favorite- profession right now is Reaper, thanks to the extreme tankiness and satisfying pace of attack (I am pure PvE, and not really into raiding). I have four of them … the one I use the most has the flaming feathered gear, a WM mask, and Nightfury shoulders, but I generally cover that up with an outfit. Best so far being Spring Promenade though right now she’s in Outlaw. She’s a sylvari, picked because I wanted a light armor sylvari back when I made her and I gave her a focus on fungal rot and decay due to her interest in protecting Mother against root attacks.

Question, if you could on one character swap from “job” to “job” like I hear FFIV allows, would that make you willing to play multiple jobs if you could do them all on just one character?

If so, you could document the sliders on your character, and then make clones of him for each profession. He’d be the same guy, just swapping hats when you swap in character select.

Well, at launch it was a lot more hectic. You needed a group of five and were likely to wipe thanks to the constant waves of mobs on small fighting platforms. Even the tedious end part of firing the lasers had wurms sprouting out of the deck (gotta wonder how, there not being a lot of burrowing room in a metal deck) to force you off the lasers to deal with them or die of poison.

But that all seemed too much for an individual’s personal story, so even before the PS revamp they toned it down to greatly reduce the numbers of mobs spawning without shortening the time of the trip. Then they converted it to a soloable run.

So now you have long stretches of nothing happening in between face roll fights and yes, it is slow.

If you want it to feel faster, you most likely need to team up with at least one other person. That way you can chat with each other in between mob appearances and help pass the time.

Also I’m fairly certain you won’t get any bank tabs, storage expanders, or anything else that has a capped amount per account, as those can’t be gifted lest someone receive more than they can use. You can check this by finding them in the gem store; if there’s no gift box by the purchase options, no one can buy them for you.

I hope you do get something you’d been dreaming of. Just please help the kind donators by narrowing it down! (Also if anyone has already given you anything at all on the list, probably under the rules of this thread you need to note that in your post and close out your request).

(Request) The Loner Guild (Hall)

I did the following I invited 2 of my best friends ingame and we capped Lost Precipice

They stayed in my guild but as honorary members. They have no rights and can use the facilities of my now lvl25 guild hall. They do not represent, do not help in missions, and do not contribute.

It’s very nice of you to have given them hall use. But to clarify for the OP, you needn’t invite anyone to your guild even temporarily in order to claim the hall. As long as you have the mission queued up (ie have spent the gold and influence to get it) and you party or squad up with those aiding you, then once you have fully loaded into the hall everyone else can join your guild instance by walking into the portal and selecting your tag from the drop down. Then you start the mission, everyone mini-zergs around with you to kill vine tenders and vines and then the boss, and you touch the pretty crystal, and boom, you have a hall and they’re all kicked out as it resets to a claimed hall.

2. i lose the interest in playing when anything i can do in the game in a full day of boring grind (which is part of the course with mmorpg’s) i can do in under 10minutes of RL work. it means any ingame effort is a complete and utter wasted of time.

I think the part I bolded is where your issue arises. It’s not par for the course, actually. Poor game design will make you absolutely have to do long stretches of meaningless repetition before you can advance a tiny bit, but that’s not the case here. If you want the maximum shinies in the minimum time, sure, you’ll have to do things beyond tolerance levels to get there.

But if you’re ok to play the game content and now and then check your bank for accumulated mats/currency, you’ll find that you have advanced. I’m interested in the Stalwart Shoulders from PvP/WvW, but I don’t engage meaningfully in those parts of the game. Yet with badges from achievement chests I’ve done all the Big Spender dailies, used the guild boost on WvW reward, and am slowly inching towards my Legacy chest.

Sure I pushed to get my runestone a day from DM so as to collect the new backpack, and yeah it got a -little- tedious doing all those hearts every evening. But I was also enjoying Map chat, group events, and loads of mats and magic accumulation as side effects. Also, I didn’t have to grind it out so fast. I could have done it one night a week and still eventually reach that ascended back.

Would spending some cash on gems for gold shortcut some things like guild hall advancement? Sure would. Why would I do that, though? The game will eventually provide. My cash goes to gems for gem shop items, and an occasional small boost to gold to get TP items that came from the gem shop RNG and can’t be gained in game. I did flat out buy some gold with gems to get my commander tag right before the price went from 100 g to 300 g, as that was time sensitive.

In short, if you feel there are long tasks you must do to “advance” in the game as fast as possible, that could be shortened by gem-bought gold, you’re psyching yourself into not having fun.

Which is fine. Maybe casually going along doing fun stuff and occasionally realizing you can get a new shiny isn’t your style. You might want to try ESO, which has a cosmetics shop but no ability to buy the currency with in-game gold or vice versa, and to make gold you really have to get into a trading guild and meet its requirements to be able to sell to other players (and not all trading guilds are equal, they bid each week on the prime trade hub locations and can lose the trader they had the previous week). Achieves there are per character, too, so you can take years of play to advance each alt to where you want to be. Might suit you, who knows?

Problem with Goldsellers

I understand the feeling that it’s cheating to buy gold even via the legit company provided method. I, like you, am livid at gold sellers.

However, it is designed into the game economy and is meant to dissuade illicit gold buying, which is far worse for the game as the vultures and leeches strip mine the game for gold in order to profit off impatient, unethical players, without heed to how they are wrecking the game experience for real customers. Moreover, remember that gems don’t just buy gold: gold buys gems! And new gems only show up for purchase if people do swap their gems for gold. If you buy gold with your cash-bought gems, you are helping drag the price down for players that need to gather up gold in-game in order to get the pretty things on the gem store. You’re adding to the supply to meet the demand.

I seldom buy gold with my gems, I pretty much have to really want a thing on the TP that I cannot otherwise get (I don’t mean a legendary, egad, I’m not spending that kind of cash on pixels — if I were I would have long since ceased my whimpers about how much I want a permanent hair stylist, lol). But when I do, I am secure in the knowledge that ANet both approves and desires the transaction in order to keep things balanced.

I hope that helps.

Selling mats or keeping them

Ascended mats do use lower end stuff. I keep getting slowed on making Elonian Leather, for instance, due to low supplies of Rugged Leather. Deldrimor Ingots need iron and platinum. Etc.

You say every discipline, does that include Scribe? If so, congrats, I haven’t broken 300 scribe yet despite working on it on and off since HoT launch, since my guild is too tiny to funnel me the mats needed. If not, you’re going to need a ton of copper just to get started on it, and then to make the base kits that go into the lower decorations that go into the higher decorations.

Not so much a festival as a gemstore event.

anniversary dye pack & permafrost dye

I agree with Illconceived. I’d love for it to be in this August’s gifts, but I’ll be very (happily) surprised if it is. I will generally buy one 5-pack of new dyes if I like them, and hope, and rng has usually given me one of the dyes via that method. Not this time, alas. I’m certainly not in a position to pay hundreds of gold for a dye, so it’s birthday gifts or bust.

My five launch-weekend alts are ready, though!

Which classes are "tanky" but still fun?

For fun and tanky PvE my vote is with Reaper (the necromancer elite, does require HoT ownership). Slow, steady, and survives really well without taking too long to kill enemies. The elite weapon and utilities flow really well together. I pretty much hate using anything but my Reaper these days when it comes to wanting to slug my way through PvE.

Glide time

Well as to that, you can’t glide down in that instance. You inexorably rise. So it’s another easy afk long glide if you position yourself under a rock ledge that doesn’t turn off the glider.

Come to think of it, is the OP asking for a sustained glide without ever tapping off the glider to, say, duck under something that would un-glide you if you land atop it?
