Warriors vs

warriors are still extremely strong in some cases but now with requirement of better timings and attention.

I’ve been using this celestial s/s lb build someone gave me on here and it just helped my warrior tremendously. I was having a hard time after the patch as my axebow build wasn’t performing nearly as well as it used to, so I reluctantly tried this one with s/s lb and never looked back.

He can deal with most threats, hold a point pretty well, and even some of the few classes I struggle with such as dps guardians I still give a really good fight and force them to use everything. Warriors may still need some reworking, but they still have their place.

How to deal with DPS medi guards?

If you are even with them right now, you don’t need advice. DPS med guards are counters to almost any warrior.

Only S/S longbow condi wins more then it loses. I guess celestial can do well for the same reasons.

So the advice would be to go deeper into condi. Or don’t, because it sucks.

What makes them a direct counter?

I use a s/s lb celestial build that can surprisingly deal with most threats and has some good survivability. The build doesn’t have a huge burst or anything, but focuses on might stacking with condi pressure and decent power.

I’ve noticed that my matchups with dps guards are almost always even, we usually have each other very closely and it will come down to who gets that last hit in successfully. ither way, we both usually have to pop every utility by the time it’s over in 1v1 rooms. Any advice on how to deal with them?

Age of the glass cannon in tpvp?

There’s one thing I’ve noticed lately when I do solo ques in tpvp, all of my team runs the same “build.”

I say it like that because I like to play my mesmer, who is your typical shatter buildwith high power, glassy, cant fight on point. I always get paired with other classes that are often all light or medium armors, very glass cannon, can’t fight on point, etc. Because of this, I often have to bring a heavy like my warrior when I play because if I bring my mesmer, I know I’ll be stuck with a team of five glass cannons that often result in our demise. I rarely see tanky builds anymore, has it sort of shifted since I last played?

I tend to get wrecked a lot by meditation guardians in 1v1 rooms, any advice on how to deal with them with this build?

You have to kite them out at the beginning of the fight, usually with greatsword auto attack and greatsword 3. Whittle down their health until you feel confident to engage. When they use their focus 5 skill back out and attack it till it is used as it can crit for 5k easily, and remember to count their judges intervention cooldown because that allows them to get whirling wrath on you easily. The key is patience and practice.

Meditation Guard as a build is very anti-zerker and is great at beating zerker classes, and the top meditation players are very good at abusing that. This means it is essential for us to kite until we can get a good burst on them, before they do the same to us.

They seem to be what I struggle with the most, even my celestial s/s lb warrior can give them a good fight, but it’s usually even and I’ll have to pop literally all my utilities

I didnt mean really for 3 izerkers, you can have duelist and a zerker or swordsman and zerker.zerker is important, cause of cripple.

This topic is about GS/Staff, you do not have duelist or swordsman (you shouldn’t have that with anything btw).

3 izerkers and you in the middle.(AND DO NOT SHATTER)
(…)
The point is that if you keep at least two phntasms the thief will eat dmg everytime he will get out of stealth

Shortbow. He takes your phantasms down in 1-2 shots, not to mention that autoattack bounces, if you stand close to your clones the attack hits you, your clone and then you again. And it’s pretty easy to dodge iZerker and Warlock, he can do that too. After he’s done with your phantasms and a large portion of your hp, the thief will switch to main set and execute you, likely. Encouraging a shatter mes to play it like a phantasm build is a bad idea, you should look for an opportunity to burst the thief instead.

Plus you are assuming the thief isn’t s/d, in which case he does not even have to change sets, he can just use dagger 4 and fire procs to get rid of your phantasms.

And while a sword set instead of a staff is also pretty good, it drastically decreases your access to movement and positioning tools + you sacrifice a great AoE skill that could deny stomps and resses.

That is what happens when you only read half of the replies here.

We didnt spoke about gs/staff anymore,we spoke on mesmer vs d/d thief.

and the second thing you mentioned,Shotbow..again we spoke about thieves with d/d who just avoid you by CnD your illusions,so while it is true,to force thief switch to shortbow,it is what we want and hence proving my point. After that, you go play your shatter burst against helpless SB thief.

You just have to dodge their burst and they’re free to attack. Boon strip that we have really kittens them.

I was wondering if the double ranged shatter could take out a dps medi guardian in 1v1s, or do you think they could counter this build?

Possible to get "Pet Seed" back?

I believe the only way to get the Pet Seed again would be to go all the way through making the Cultivated Vine. You’re given a Pet Seed at the end of the process along with the Cultivated Vine backpiece.

You may have had to do that anyway. At some point there was a “lock” on Mawdrey where you could only make it if you’d completed the Cultivated Vine, even if you got the bug that gave you the Pet Seed early. Not sure if that was ever removed, but either way, now that you’ve traded in the Pet Seed I think that’s your only course of action.

It’s a bit frustrating because I spent all of my materials such as the bloodstone dust, bloodstone bricks, meaty plant food, etc. to have all the stuff for mawdrey because I googled the pet seed and what to do with it. I haven’t even heard of the cultivated seed until just recently since I never got it.

It also creates some other problems like having to do the story all over because I no longer have the living story items necessary.

Since I finished the living story before august 12, I got the bug where it gave me the pet seed instead of the cultivated seed. I googled the directions on what to do with this item and made all the items necessary to create mawdrey at the cost of my materials such as bloodstone, etc.

Someone told me I wasn’t supposed to get that item and to exchange it for the “non bug” item so I did not knowing that it makes the cultivated vine instead of mawdrey. So I literally made everything I needed to make mawdrey, but lost my pet seed because I thought it was a bugged item. Is there any way I am able to reverse the trade?

It’s a hard build, and mesmers can’t really stand on a capture point for too long not even in 1v1s, that’s not their role. But the damage you bring into teamfights is great, along with portal play, for example you can put portal at far and then go mid – if your opponent leaves far, you can portal back to decap and then portal back to the fight – but if they don’t want that to happen, they obviously can’t move away, which should make your team win the other points in 4v5.

It’s good for 1v1s just not on a tiny capture point. And don’t drop halting strike, it’s a really important part of your damage.

Can you name the utilities that trigger halting strike with this build?

There are no utilities there that trigger it with this build. Only Illusionary Wave, Chaos Storm (randomly dazes in AoE), Diversion (F3), but it should be enough. The first 2 are AoE skills, and HS can proc for 2-4k on each target with every interrupt.

A question about chaos storm then, I usually try to save it for things like rezzing or stomping, but should I also use it offensively when encountering an enemy?

You should try to keep it for res/stomp and other important situations if possible, you’re doing it right :P But sometimes it’s the only way to stand a chance, for example against thieves (your hard-counter) – if a d/p goes into stealth + you are low on health and out of CDs, an Aegis from chaos storm or a daze to the thief can save you. Or if you really really want to interrupt a healing skill and you are in for a gamble (it’s not 100% that the skill will get rupted in time).

Thank you for helping me use this build properly, I want to learn this build, I’ve been told it’s very hard to master while some say it’s just a glass cannon and a one trick pony, preferring lockdown.

I’m really enjoying it so far, but I do understand thieves being a hard counter. I get wrecked nearly every time against a thief xD

Right now it does look that way, some have tried sword+torch in place of staff, usually if without a thief, but staff is such a great kite weapon and has chaos storm. Greatsword is very strong for the ranged damage, even just pressing 1 does good damage with air+fire sigils, let alone everything else.

This is without even getting into the shatter side of it, massive aoe damage on mindwrack (and with mirroblade/beserker putting them right on top of the enemy), boon stripping and the interrupt from diversion.

Would you say it’s still viable if I use the 20% more mindwrack damage trait over the trait that inflicts 600 damage upon interrupting a foe?

Yes, its still viable, however with the double ranged shatter you have access to a lot of interrupts (gs# 5, staff#5, diversion) and the dmg from halting strike crits for about 2k, which adds up to quite a bit. The 20% more mind wrack dmg is more of a one trick pony thing. Yes you get 20% more dmg on your biggest burst of dmg, but youd get the same dmg out of halting strike, just not all tied to one easily dodgeable ability

Can you please name all the interrupts with this build that count for halting strike? That might be my problem, I’m not utilizing the trait to its full potential.

Idk if Im using this build right, but typically ill start with the staff, use #2, #3, dodge roll forward and use diversion, then switch to greatsword and use $4, #2, dodge roll forward, #3 with mind wrack. Tips and tricks on this build greatly appreciated, would you say this build is good for 1v1 rooms or 1v1s?

Shield or Focus for AH guardian?

What’s your build look like DrDivine?

I just copied the build from meta battle wiki titled “AH bunker Guardian” and on paper, it sounds like it works really well. It has over 3k armor , lots of condi clears and some good heals, but when it comes to relying on the focus I have really bad survivability.

With the shield, it’s a bit more user friendly as it has better cooldowns and a pushback i naddition to +90 toughness. The focus I just can’t survive with, the moment I am focused in a team fight I almost drop instantly. I’ll be taking 8k hits so I have to pop my heals which are struggling to keep up with the massive dps from enemy players. Once the block on the focus is exspired, I die pretty easily.

You should not use your healing skill unless you are getting bursted or extremely low on HP. You have many ways to heal yourself up with other skills, like using Empower on staff. Use your healing skill and your elite when you are being heavily focused because they give you block/invulnerability. Use staff 5 to disrupt the burst and gain some time.

And try to LoS. You can’t do that on most capture points, but sometimes you can leave the point for some seconds, especially if you have a D/D ele or a Hambow who can take your place for a bit of time on the point. This gives you time to reset a bit.

And dodge. This is the only possible issue i can see. You are likely facetanking entire shatter combos atm. Keep playing the build and learn to watch out for enemy burst, it’s a matter of practice.

Or you can also try the other bunker guard build: http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Guardian_-_Traditional_Bunker – Tage often uses this with Sanctuary and Shield, but IMO it’s harder.

Yeah, I don’t want to dismiss the focus as “bad,” I just don’t have a good grasp on how to use the build. A good example is the double ranged shatter build with mesmer, I was dying A LOT with it before someone told me what to do and how to properly use my utilities and I faired much better. With the AH guardian, I haven’t quite mastered how to react to situations yet lol

Thank you for the information, I’ll try to elaborate on the common problem I have with shield vs focus:

I can take more hits and have more 1v1 potential, there’s been times where my team wiped and I was able to hold the enemies off until they re spawn and came back to help me The moment I am left alone or a team mate dies, I am almost instantly down due to no protection against high burst. I’ll be forced to pop shields and use shouts just to survive the long burst, but then that leaves me vulnerable with no utilities. The moment I am focused I am dead faster than I can react.

If my dps partner roaming with me is a read the wind ranger, would you still recommend they stay close to me?

In most cases of 1v1 (where the enemy isn’t extremely bursty) you should survive well enough without even using a heal skill. In 1v2 you should be able to hold your own (regardless of your offhand) for quite a while, again conditional on the enemies not being completely burst-focused.

You should probably learn to better identify which damage and conditions you can safely ignore and which you really need to block/avoid. (By the way, which sigils do you use on your weapons?) Things like your heal, your blocks and your elite skill should be kept for the really big bursts. Also, if the enemy team has a lot of ranged players (say, 3 professions that are likely to kite you: Engineer, Ranger, some Warriors) consider swapping out one Shout for Wall of Reflection. That helps a lot against ranged bursts.

Your partner should stay close to you, at least in range of your Shouts, but preferably also on your Symbols. You miss out on a lot of extra healing if your boons aren’t reaching them.

Im still having some trouble surviving with the focus, it’s not quite having the same sustain as the shield still.

Hotjoins will always be hit or miss. I’m really confident in my ability to stay alive against multiple opponents (even successfully defending mid against two players with the wrong traits…) but some hotjoin matches just can’t be helped. If the other team is randomly more organized than you are, there’s no way you’re going to win. And people in hotjoin occasionally run builds that are a lot burstier than what you would expect in sPvP.

If you play rated matches and you get focused, your team should attack the people focusing you down with everything they got. They need to force the opponent on the defensive. With an AH build, you should always have at least one ally with you to get the most out of your build.

Specific advice for using the Focus:

  • I find the Blind to be too slow to reliably prevent specific attacks, so I just use it whenever or to cleanse a condition. This probably isn’t optimal in high level play, but at my level it still works.
  • Try to use the Blind close to an enemy, that way it’ll probably bounce back to you.
  • The Scepter’s shield can be used when stunned and it might be beneficial for you to use it for that.
  • I also try to time that shield for when I’m standing in the Mace’s Symbol or have Regeneration or Virtue of Resolve ticking, to get a good deal of uninterrupted healing trickling in.

I find it really odd that you survive significantly longer with the Shield, since when I use it I do so despite it lowering my survivability. Could you describe (in rough terms) how a fight usually goes for you?.

Thank you for the information, I’ll try to elaborate on the common problem I have with shield vs focus:

The Focus is generally considered a lot better and with some reason. It offers more survivability than the Shield does, which is what you’re looking for when playing an AH build. The Blinds and Blocks are generally more useful than anything the Shield has to offer. On top of that, Focus can help you with some extra burst damage.

That being said, I still quite like the Shield (more than most people here). I tend to run it when I’m playing with my guild group, where the healing, the ranged absorb and the knockdown become more useful (because my group can capitalize on it). That still lets you run the Shield for only one skill (seriously, the 4 skill is horrible).

Focus is 100% superior to shield.

The problem im having with the focus right now is im really squishy with it. When I bring focus in the big fights I tend to do A LOT, my health drops incredibly fast. I haven’t been having that problem with the sheild, but what is making the focus a better option?

That shouldn’t happen. The Focus just offers more in terms of survivability. The only thing the Shield really offers is the knockback with the healing, which can give you a bit of a breather. How do you use both weapons? And is this Solo Queue, Hot Join or Group Queue? It could just be that you get focused a lot and your group isn’t helping you survive that.

It’s a bit of each, hot joins arent too bad, but rated play it starts to fall apart a bit. They’ll focus me and the heals can’t quite keep up with the burst damage. What should I expect my group to do when I’m using my AH guardian? I need to find out what the mindset is with focus and how to use the focus skills correctly so I can offer a bit more sustain as right now im really, really squishy with it.

Which do you think is better to go with my mace in a AH build?

Mace: #1 Melee cleave #2 Symbol on your location #3 Block/Damages. Melee weapon so you need a target to stay close
Shield: #4 Does absolutely nothing #5 Pushes enemy away from you
Focus: #4 Blind and Regen #5 Blocks attacks or damages enemy

The Mace and Focus has a good symbiosis while the shield at its current state does the opposite of what you want when you’re using a Mace.
I’d love if they Shield would get a whole rework, #4 could do something like “Block 1 attack, apply 2 second of Chill on attacker” like some NPCS already do. But now? Focus in 99% of all cases

I guess I need to learn how to live with focus then, I do have a few questions though. Should I use strength in numbers? Another thing I always wanted to know is why sigil of intelligence on both is always recommended? A general strat on staying alive might help too xD

Dazes give 5 stacks, interrupts give 3. A full 3 clones + IP of diversion is 20 stacks + more if it lands an interrupt or two. your staff auto/clones have a chance to apply vuln as part of there RNG, 3 staff clones out will usually keep about 5-6 stacks+give you might and fury, shatter with diversion for 25 vuln stacks + 4 more might stacks, then swap to your GS for your mind wrack combo.

Thank you, I’m starting to get better now with the double ranged shatter build, it was definitely hilarious when we went against a team of four guardians an an engineer and stripped them of their boons for an easier kill.

My skill in 1v1s with this build needs some work, but it’s really rewarding when I do get combos right and see an enemy get downed pretty fast.

The most basic of combo’s is: I Zerker, Mirror Blade, dodge into target, Mind wrack+Mind Stab. Prior to this you can build 20+ stacks of vulnerability and land some damage from halting strike with a diversion shatter and chaos storm in your offset. However shatter is not so much about pre-determined rotations and is a lot more reaction based play as you go. It’s a spec to get creative with to be successful. In seriousness there are endless combinations, but the idea of them all is too land your 3 clone shatter + IP.

I should also note that at most levels of play pyro’s phantasm build will work, it is only at higher tiers or if your getting picky about optimizing your comp that shatter is taken for it’s unique ability’s.

I’m finding some combos out, the problem im noticing is im not getting many stacks of vulnerability. I keep reading metabattle saying you get 25 stacks but dont explain how

Weapon sets are upto you, I along with many prefer the double ranged option though. If I were you I would watch some shatter guides and read supcuties shatter guide, there’s loads of stuff that will help so much, but it is a spec that will take a bit of practice. As for the thief problem, that’s something you really have to deal with. They hard counter us badly, but with practice you can kite away from them. It helps having a team in comms so you can have your guard or thief peel for you when you get targeted.

Can you give me some combinations to use for the double ranged shatter? Ive been using it and I feel ike the stuff is there, its just not able to kill very fast (my phantasms with pyro’s build tend to take down people fatser at this moment), any combinations?

Your typical 4/4/0/0/6 shatter is the TPvP meta for a reason. Aoe boon rip, huge spike damage, good mobility and good control. Also its synergy with a thief for your teams roaming comp is devastating.

I’m guessing you’re talking about the double ranged from the metabattle wiki, I’ve heard it takes some practice and its pretty fun, my problem I’ve had with it is the damage hasn’t been too good and dies very easily.

It hasn’t been too bad against other classes, but certain ones like thieves theres just been no chance lol. I often die before I can do anything significant because thieves or a staff ele just melt me. I could probably use some help on what combinations to use and a general strategy

I’ve been using pyro’s phantasm build for 1v1s and Ireally love it, but I’m trying to find an equally strong build (whether it be in conditions or power) that I could use that would better benefit a team fight in pvp. Any suggestions?

So i’I’ve been trying your version and I’m starting to like shelter now, I also switched the focus for the shield and im really enjoying the shield too for some reason. Perhaps its the bubble, but I find it really helps.

Shield instead of Focus is a personal preference. I started using Shield because I run Hammer when doing hotjoin and was really missing the knockback.

I’m glad it’s working out for you.

You use hammer and shield with this AH build?

Mace and Shield. The Hammer is only for hotjoin, where you don’t need as much survivability because the teams are less coordinated. The Hammer is fun, but it doesn’t offer enough for tPvP.

Would you still use shield over focus in tpvp?

I’m running 0/0/6/6/2

cleric gear with soldier rune

shout build

staff(cleric) greatsword (soldier)

1500 healing power. 20k vita

can reach 30k vita but healing power going down to 1000

very usefull when u lead on wvw

it’s working perfectly when u are alone or with group

Can you give me all info on traits and such? Do you think it would be good in pvp?

Well, that’s my experience at least. I can get some bursty Thieves or Rangers down (if they have low Toughness), but most professions are unkillable by me.

Your main goal is indeed to stall a fight and keep others alive while they focus on the killing. You should definitely help with this by always doing something, even if it’s only auto-attacking.

Signet of Resolve does heal for a lot more, but the block from Shelter makes up for that discrepancy. If you time it right, you can block more damage than you could heal with the Signet. If the Signet works for you, by all means, use the Signet. But you mentioned things weren’t working that well, so give Shelter another chance.

I run a build similar to yours and I’m getting good results.

1vX is really just a matter of outlasting until your team comes to help you out. When I queue on my own I can get focused down really quick if the players are somewhat competent, but if I queue with a guildie who’s quick to help me out, things are widely better. So when you’re on your own, don’t expect to win a fight. The best you can do is not lose it.

Thank you very much for your detailed explanation on the build mechanics and do’s and don’ts. So if I understand this build’s purpose correctly, my potential isn’t really in 1v1 fights or doing much damage, it’s running into the big fights and healing everyone and giving them buffs to stay alive while they dish the damage to “save” me? Since I have so many damage dealing characters, I figured making a guardian a healer/bunker instead of just meditation might be better.

I used the signet of resolve as it has an enormous heal that has saved me many times in big fights. Perhaps I will exchange the toughness trait for purity and try shelter, you think that would be better?

Since I have a high power character, a high condi character, etc. I thought I’d make my guardian a straight up bunker for something different. I’ve been trying a slight variant of this build http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Guardian_-_Altruistic_Healing_Bunker

This could just be me being new guardian and being bad, but I noticed how my performance is really reliant on the team. Whenever im in the big zerg fights, I can really change the course of battle, when I’m alone, I get downed fairly fast and can’t damage much at all. I have the two traits that grants toughness for all and healing and damage to mace instead of the condi clear interval, and my healing skill is the signet instead of shelter. Any advice on to improve my bunkering performance??

Still viable, but since Eviscerate is so hard to land and the build is heavy realiant on that skill, it makes a bit less viable than Hambow. But if well played it will work fine still

I would say Sword/Sword does same job only better.

Can you explain? I’m kinda curious to try sword/sword

Here’s me playing Hybrid Sword to give you an idea of how it plays.

http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Warrior_-_Hybrid_Sword_Warrior

And here’s the build I use.

So I started using this build late yesterday and most of today and I was kinda skeptical, what reduced stance durations and no signet mastery? Eh I tried it anyway and it’s been really, really effective. Whenever Iwould go into 1v1 rooms I felt I struggled a bit with guardians because of my burst missed with axe I was mostly done for as they walled me. This sword/sword build makes me outlast most enemies and they have an even harder time trying to run from me. Even if I miss with final thrust, the condi pressure and immobilizes are so good that I feel like I’m not completely reliant on it, it’s just there for the massive burst if I need it.

Glad you enjoyed it mate, so many naysayers haha.

I had my doubts to be honest, and I still think axe/sword can be a great build too, I guess I’ve just had better luck with s/s so far since the patch. Final thrust, similar to the axe burst, can be a little hard to land for me sometimes, but the difference so far for me is I never feel like I am reliant on final thrust for win a fight. If I miss, there’s also the condi damage, the immobilizes, mobility, and especially the burst attack on sword hits pretty well in both power and condition.

typical warrior lameplay, hitting up noobs in hotjoin. Warriors that can pvp without longbow are indeed the only ones with some skill to it. Longbow should haev been nerfed long ago but apparently its the balance teams favorite weapon all over !

Longbow is just a good weapon weapon choice, who wouldn’t want range with good AOE and immobilize? That’s not to say it’s required in all builds, but it does give us a bit of versatility.

Nic3 necroing.

Sorry I didn’t mean to resurrect an old thread but I actually tried this build
out and it was fun. I was actually complemented by many players. I didn’t
want to make a whole new thread on this same build.

The celest axebow build was along with hambow our best tpvp build, pre patch.
It took a big hit this patch much more then hambow as axe burst is harder to land and the dmg effected by the adrneline level while hammer is good with just 1 bar.
Running celest sowrds bow is a full hybrid build which is very fun and good for duels but less good for tpvp, currently. But I would trait it a whole different anyhow 0/6/5/0/3

Thank you for your feedback. Btw, I wasn’t having trouble landing the Evis, yeah
I missed 1 out of 3-4 times, but it was the dmg that I was concerned about. I expected
a crit of 6k atleast. In the last hour I was able to get a Evis of about 4.5k. Helped a lot.
Really hard to decide between duel swords or a axe and sword at the moment.

If anyone can link a thread on a good build for spvp since the latest patch, I’ll
appretiate it a lot.

I’ve been trying this variant out with only two changes (sigil of purity so no reliance on crit chance and an extra sigil of battle) but I’m liking both versions of this build. I feel like this version you gave gives the axebow more options. If your burst is not landing, you’re still hitting pretty hard with the stacks of might, have pretty good hp so I don’t feel like the burst is your only option anymore, it’s just your best way to end a fight xD

I thought I just had that I should add is that signet would be better only if it breaks stun which I can’t remember right now if it does

It does indeed break stun, may I ask, why do you think it’s better?

I’m using a celestial axe build that ahs healing signet, endure pain, balanced stance, berserker stance and signet of rage.

Theres two variants I’ve seen on this build, one uses endure pain with the trait vigorous focus so you get vigor whenever you use a stance, the other uses dolyak signet with signet mastery instead. Which do you think would be a better option?
