Rock Dog or Tropical Bird better?

I recently made my own mesmer build that has been surprisingly effective, using the ogre rune because of that extra power damage anda free summon. However, some people Ive heard SWEAR that the bird is better and does more damage. Idk if thats true so Im asking now.

I have no boon duration with this build, so should I keep the ogre rune or go for the pirate rune?

I think a mesmer dueling build can’t get better than this. :P

My build in my signature was inspired by watching Countless wreck fools night after night. It’s heavier on the condi with taking Scepter instead of sword. Both are excellent dueling builds!! Signets for the win!

Out of curiosity, what makes this build effective in most cases over something like a zerker build?

Classic zerker shatter builds have 0 condi cleansing, while this build offers a fair amount of that. You have access to 5 different sources of distortion (shatter, sword, and 3 signets) which makes it very defensive, meanwhile a single Duelist phantasm can stack ~8 bleeds on your target if you make them tank it with a stun or root – and ofc, if they try to cleave them down that inflicts additional conditions.

One thing I did notice is the build did struggle a lot against certain warriors. One of them was duel sword condi I believe and he was shaking the damage off like it was nothing lol

Oh man I take it back, and totally forgot.. Condi builds wreeckk much easier. The ultimate dueling build is still PU Condi but in duels its often considered unfair.

what PU build is usually used? I thought it was nerfed lol

Easy: less risk. You can take more hits, and there’s more room for mistake/error. The longer the battle goes on, the more likely you’re to win. Skill being equal, I think conditions > dps in 1v1 situations. That’s why terms like “aids” and “cancer” were used in a derogatory way to describe condition builds in koth and dueling arenas.

My build has long-lasting bleeds due to the krait runes. The sustain given from signet heal is amazing, and your other signets will mitigate a lot of income dmg. Most zerker memser don’t trait for sustain even though they could. They also don’t trait for condi clear, even though they could… Condi builds have more flexibility in the trats/utilities we use, where as a zerker is confined to very few in order to be utmost effective at being a zerker.

I tried it out in a few 1v1s and I actually won them 0.o lol, pretty fun build. I always sucked with zerker in 1v1s for some reason, I have runa few, but Im only good with them in tpvp 1v1s. I have a glass zerker build that uses gs and sword/pistol and it hits like a truck and makes them play defensively, but also doesn’t have very good mobility and sustain. It’s more of channeling everything into massive power and decent stuns.

How to beat other mesmers?

in Mesmer

It helps to keep in mind the mindset of your rival Mesmer… Which is likely similar to your own! Lets start with the main question; why go into stealth?

  • Offensively, to set up a burst.
  • Defensively to reposition out of a bad situation.

Now if your opponent is attacking you and goes into stealth, that means they have 3 seconds to get their burst off. How do you defend against an offensive stealth burst? Timing.

  • Keep in mind the distance between you and the opponent, will it take at least 1s to get to you?
  • Keep in mind your defenses. Blink, decoy, blurred frenzy, phase retreat, dodging and distortion. Any one of these can completely mitigate a shatter burst.

With the above two questions answered, you know why and when the opponent will stealth burst you, but where will the attack come from?

  • Behind you, most likely. Stealth breaks targeting and the best way to capitalize on this is to swing behind the opponent.
  • Directly ontop of you. Shatter bursts hit hardest in melee range. Never stand still and keep in mind where the clones are positioned, that’ll help determine where the attack will come from.

One thing to keep in mind, if a Mesmer is using Decoy to engage you, they’re trading a crucial defense for that burst. Once it fails, you are at an advantage since you likely share all the same defenses. Once decoy, blink, and distortion are down that’s the time to go for the kill. Try not to throw all your eggs in one big burst in the beginning, because odds are it will likely be defended against. Instead, observe and whittle them down until the opportunity presents.

(Sorry for typos. Cellphone)

So do you think I should wait to use my decoy when they use it first? I’ll admit, I often panic in mesmer 1v1s, usually opening with mirror blade and phant berserker and shatter, but I can’t seem to do damage to them lol

I run double ranged in tpvp, and while im decent and can kill most threats, there are two in particular I tend to struggle with. Thieves (of course), and other mesmers.

A lot of my struggle comes from targeting, the second they go into stealth I lose the target and while I tend to know which one is the real mesmer, I can never target them fast enough. I’ll try pressing tab but it scrolls through all the clones first, and usually get bursted by then. If I try to click its just not fast enough xD. Any advice on how to combat other mesmers without getting confused?

DrDivine.5378

Eles are squishy. They have low armour and low hp, however, they have a lot of sustained healing.

When you take pressure, here’s the general defensive rotation:

Say you’re in fire, and you start taking heavy damage. You’re now down to half health.

Pop your fire field (Fire 4).
Switch to earth. This immediately gives you protection.
Immobilize the person focusing you and then use the Earth 3 again to leap through the fire field. This gives you fire shield and, thanks to your traits, more protection.
Dodge roll back into the fire field whilst still in earth, this’ll blast the fire field and cripple anyone near you.
Use Earth 4 to knock down anyone near you. This will also blast the fire field.

At this point, you’ve got protection, fire aura and you’ve crippled and knocked down people pressuring you.

Now, switch to water.
If your fire field is still up, you could use Water 3 to blast it and gain some more might – this depends on how much pressure you’re taking. It’ll also chill enemies around you which is great for kiting.
If you can, try to line of sight the guy pressuring you
Dodge to give yourself a small heal.
Use Frost Aura (Water 4) – this reducing incoming damage by 43% thanks to the aura trait and Frost Aura’s -10% damage.
Now use Water 5 for a big heal.
Use Water 2 to heal yourself a bit more.
If you still need more healing, you should be able to do another dodge in water soon.

You should now be back up to ~90% hp, maybe 100%. With might stacked and your air/fire attunements ready to go.

Rinse and repeat, basically. A lot survivability also comes from dodging the right attacks.
For example, if you get hit by a hambow warrior’s CC chain, you’re gonna find yourself dying pretty fast. Save your dodges for when he switches to hammer and kite him whilst he’s using it. Then when he goes back to the longbow, you can pressure him again.

It’s all about knowing when to be offensive and when to be defensive. If you’re getting seriously focused, don’t be afraid to pull out of a fight. Ride the Lightning will get you out of basically any fight. Use this to disengage and relieve pressure then either rejoin the fight or go elsewhere.

Hopefully this helps.

Thank you, I had no idea about the auras, the combos have been confusing me but im slowly starting to get them down.

I should probably ask too, what would you say a d/d eles main role is that makes it so useful when compared to other classes?

Good at tpvp but bad at dueling?

DrDivine.5378

Don’t even bother with dueling arena’s. They are a joke. If you want to get better, keep playing in real arenas. You have way too many variables in real games vs dueling arenas. Granted, its good to practice 1v1s I wouldn’t guage your “skill” on a 1v1. Like others have said, The dueling builds almost always get wrecked in a 5v5 game.

That’s what I’m confused about,, I hear some people say dueling is a good testament of your skill in tpvp, but I find a lot of the builds used in dueling rooms lack mobility and other essential tools for a team fight. That and no element of surprise or predictability. I guess when I play an actual team, Ion’t get to switch my traits or bow before attacking, it’s whoever ambushes each other first.

DrDivine.5378

Double ranged shatter can win a lot of 1v1 matchups on the beach which is where most 1v1 servers are situated. If you’re decent at ranged mesmer you should only really be losing to thieves, meditation guards and longbow rangers.

the good news is I’ve gotten better a little bit today, Im going in only using utilities and traits I would be using in tpvp such as portal as I wanted to make the situation similar.

whenever I didn’t mess up on healing, I actually won a few, against one dps guard surprisingly. with my double range build though I kite a lot, most duels they want at close range and while I don’t hide behind or stand on top of objects, I’ll be moving backwards a lot to keep distance.

Another issue I have is against other mesmers. The root of this problem comes from targeting. Even though I am aware which mesmer is the real one, I haven’t found a good way to change my target fast enough to get him. If I use tab it goes through all the clones first, and clicking has been a bit slow at times. Any advice on that?

It could just be that those people who spend a lot of time dueling are just more skilled at that style of play than you. It’s good to know your tPvP, but also useful to be able to hold your own or win 1v1s. Dueling rooms are a good place to practice your personal skill for 1v1s should you need to defend a point or maintain the neutrality during a match when allied support is unavailable for a time. A lot of people seem to have this idea, as they duel using tPvP meta builds. However, some do use builds specific for dueling – they can still be helpful to fight against, but just be aware of that fact =P.

Thats where im torn at lol, for example on my mesmer, if I run torment shatter or phantasms I can win 1v1s. If I go in a dueling room with double ranged shatter I tend to lose. In tpvp though, my double ranged shatter outperforms those two builds for me and even when im thrown into 1v1 situations I can win them in tpvp, but not in dueling rooms lol.

That’s because the dueling rooms are a fair, skill based area to practice your 1v1s in. I see most people play tournament builds in there but they do so to practice it, and it has less areas to kite and control like you can on a normal map hence why it’s more about reaction times and mechanical skill.

I can believe that, but what about builds like double ranged where you’re supposed to kite and use phase retreat to get to hard to reach places, things are generally not allowed in dueling rooms because you are required to stay within a certain distance?

1. Legendaries have the same stats as ascended, but you can change the stat type(zerker, knights, carrion, etc.).

2. It’s worth it if you really want it and not worth it if you don’t lol. Eternity has no advantages over Twilight/Sunrise.

lol I guess for my second question I’m going ask to ask this, does Eternity have better or unique special effects to it that make it look more appealing?

Beside the day/night changes on the sword and glowing end @ hilt and better footstep effect, the most noticeable and outstanding part imo is the aura surrounding the wielder body (the aura also changes day/night).
Eternity wielder aura is very different from twilight and sunrise. Twilight and Sunrise only give glow aura. Eternity’s aura on wielder is smoky, gorgeous.

The game is all about aesthetic, Eternity has the best effect among all 3 legendaries GS. Worth it? imo, yes.

That’s what I’m looking for, I do care about stats and currently only have en exotic GS, but I also ike flashy weapons and armor that make my character look nice. It’s funny because in warcraft Ididn’t care much about physical appearance, in GW2 I’m all about looking nice lol

But yeah, beyond the different look and the ability to change the stat type, no real advantage to Eternity over Sunrise or Twilight.
Just had Dusk drop from the MF… took me a couple days to decide what to do… eventually Eternity but for now Twilight will suffice, if for no other reason than it looks cool.

Yeah im looking for visual difference between Eternity and Sunrise/twilight so far I have noticed that the handle tip glows and it has a burst effect when pulling out your GS, any other effects I may have missed?

I have finally saved up enough gold to pretty much purchase a legendary of my choice, but seeing as this is my first legendary I wanted to ask two major questions before doing anything:

1: Do legendaries have better stats than exotic or ascended weapons? One reason i was looking to get Eternity is I’m looking to make a greatsword with the best stats among other options.

2: Is getting the Eternity really worth it? Eternity is a combination of twilight and Sunrise, but what makes Eternity superior to both of those besides the day/night cycle?

Power mesmer for WvW/PVE?

Firstly, don’t ever try to mix builds between wvw/pvp and pve. What works and is applicable to fighting players is almost never good for fighting AI.

That being said, before I can give more specific advice I need a bit more information. What aspects of wvw are you interested in building for. Same thing for pve, are you planning on just roaming the open world or do you expect to find yourself in dungeons?

When it comes to WvW, I tend to use my mesmer for solo roaming or with a few friends. I’ve been trying a roaming variant that plays similar to double ranged shatter but is a little tankier and has worked out pretty well so far. So I guess you could say I’m looking for more roaming mesmer builds but zerg mesmer builds are also acceptable.

Again, are you roaming in wvw or contesting points in pvp? You might want to visit one of the lockdown threads on the first two pages of this forum. It’s a wealth of knowledge on the playstyle and full of tips on how to succeed.

“Ideally”, lockdown should beat shatter. All it takes is a few decently time interrupts. That being said, all it takes is one good shatter burst to knock you out as well. Both are high risk high reward builds.

I’m happy you’re willing to explore the lockdown playstyle. It’s really fun!

I think I’ve explored more builds on my mesmer than any other class, im trying to find a new one im good at but since the september patch my mesmer kinda struggles now as my old build became obsolete with the nerf.

Both shatter and lockdown are very fun builds, though I feel like I have a harder time killing on my lockdown than I do my double ranged shatter, perhaps I need to lear more on how to use it.

I prefer Focus in pvp situations because of it’s AOE effect proccing Bountiful Interruption as well. It’s nice for decapping points, and gives you swiftness as well (GREAT with Pack runes). It’s also nice for setting up great combos utilizing CI:

Curtain—>iWarden—>Pull—>iLeap—>Frenzy—>Shatter

Toss in some Mantra dazes and you’ve got a dead enemy.

Im currently using runes of lyssa, I guess I just need help utilizing this build some lol. I’ve been doing better than what I thought, but zerker mesmers such as double ranged shatter tend to kill me very easily lol

Focus vs Pistol for Lockdown?

DrDivine.5378

What are you using for your other weapon set? I like to use Staff + Sword/Pistol in pvp and Focus in wvw. I like the mobility and defense of staff, which means I am sacrificing greatsword, which has the knockback. I bring this up primarily because of thieves and shadow refuge. In pvp I worry about that less, but in wvw it seems every thief in every group has SR and they will drop it. It’s situational.

I prefer pistol myself, I leveled up using this weapon and it has the potential to be more useful. The warden has to track the target and then roots when it uses its attack, which you can easily step out of. However, you could also use the warden as a shield. The bubble does eat projectiles, if you’re worried about those.

Currently I use GS with sword/focus as thats what I saw on this one thread here

With this build you can kite two people around a point for days, and duel all builds. It has great mobilety so you can get out of alot of sticky situations and make roaming plays.

An extra 50% bleed duration makes auto attacks and Geomancy/doom combo very strong. You can stack 25 might stacks with battle/fire field/fire aura/versitile power. I usually never use sword burst, unless fire field bugs out, thus i take brawlers recovery for more on demand condition cleanse.

Since it lacks CC it can be lackluster in teamfights. Try it out and let me know how it works out for you.

title for lulz

Before the September patch I used to run celestial axe, but noticed how it became noticeably less effective. I went on the forum cause I was among the people who were saying “my warrior sucks now” blah blah blah lol.

Penguin showed me this build and it quickly became my main warrior build and for good reasons. While it didn’t have the burst eviscerate did, this build is a lot more mobile, just as tanky and keeps the pressure both power wise and condition.

I’m guessing solo que is recommended, but even in teams people like my build because I can hold a point and all the immobilizes and cripples are much appreciated by my more bursty teammates.

I have a thing where I’ll get the enemy down very low (such as a hambow), but can’t get in that last strike and then they just pummel me with stuns.

I was curious to see if I could find an exceptional double ranged shatter player that could maybe show me some tricks in game and tips on how to play it much better. All help is appreciated

How to deal with DPS medi guards?

Just going to quote myself from the last two how to beat medi guardian threads.

edit: Just going to quote myself from the last thread.

To beat a medi guardian, you really need to know how it works. It’s like most match ups, the more information you have the better prepared you are to deal with it. As medi guardian is my main, I’ll point out a couple things.

First off, identify the weapons they’re using.

Greatsword: Leap of faith (blind)
Sword: Flashing Blade (blind) Zealot’s Defense (destroy projectile)
Focus: Ray of Judgement (blind) Shield of Wrath (3 blocks)
Mace: Protector’s Strike (single block)

Each are in themselves easy enough to spot and deal with. SoW is mostly used for dps, some guards will dodge instead of block to get the burst off. Use an AA to break through the blinds and blocks, don’t burn your cooldowns.

From there, 1 into radiance will give the guardian Justice is Blind. It’s on a 23-30s cooldown, so it’s going to be used for either highly telegraphed skills or to secure a stomp. There’s also Virtue of Courage which grants aegis, also used in a similar manner to VoJ.

Shelter in itself is probably the most troublesome block. It’s the only duration block on guardian, and if you keep unloading into it you will just give them might.

Just don’t let a medi guard choose his pace. If the fight is opened with a Judge’s Intervention burst, it only leaves one stun breaker that’s tied into condition cleanse. Apply the CC and immob, deal your damage and then kite them while waiting for cooldowns. A warrior should have no problem keeping up perma swiftness while crippling the medi guardian that has zero access to swiftness or 25% movement speed outside of runes.

Very helpful info! I have another question though, for my build which of these two master traits should I take? Defy pain or Spiked armor?

The main weakpoint of guardians is the lack of real ranged potential & lack of cripples, chills etc to help stay on target.
(dont say scepter because any target beyond 600 range can strafe to avoid orbs)

Medi guard also has a weakness in that it has a low amount of condition removal compared to a shout build.

Best option would be to use longbow in your off set & doom sigil on each weapon set to keep poison up.
This will limit their healing potential & keep extra damage ticks up on them.
Also I would suggest using the trait that allows you to stack vulnerability on crit.
(that will allow you to cover your bleeds & poison and make them waste more condition cleanses)

Would you replace sigil of battle, energy or geomancy for doom?

Ans: You run away. DPS Medi Guards are Warrior eaters.

Just like…

… yknow, I dont think other classes have hard counters in terms of raw damage/mitigation factor.

Roll a SS/LB Toughness Vitality Condition damage build. keep them at bay and overload them with conditions.

You don’t want to fight them head-on. Just keep throwing condis on them and avoiding much of their damage.

It’s not a race to kill them first, stay alive until you melt them. It’s a long-term fight.

Would you mind sharing a good s s / lb condi build? The one I use now focuses on might stacking with the celestial amulet so he’s well rounded in both areas.
