But there is a psychological effect to seeing your server down a huge amount of score. Which is why I’m not in favor of handicapping score in that way. The ratings exist and can be incorporated into the game UI. The reason we care more about ‘score’ is because that’s what the UI shows us. Right now to most players ‘rating’ is a mythical concept that only the regular wvw player is aware of.

Rack, they do already handicap the system like chess does. Glicko is a chess system, with built in handicapping. It handicaps the amount of score you can possibly gain off a weaker opponent. For example kaineng really doesn’t have to take much from TC or FA to go UP in rating.

The problems really all stem from the matchmaking system being about rating, and the in game scoring system all about PPT. Getting more points does not mean you go up in rating or down in rating.

Anet needs to quickly implement the rating system into the in game UI, show us how much were gaining and how much were going to lose at the end of the match, if people start playing for rating instead of overall score everything automatically becomes manageable. If kaineng only needs 85,000 points at the end of the match to gain rating, it will feel attainable.

Putting in a SCORE handicap means that the rating system will need an additional change to remove that added score, otherwise you will force low pop servers to gain huge amounts of rating, eventually pushing them up to be matched against t1 servers.

I do think after this week anet should lower the random multiplier just a little as servers are now overall closer together leaving it the same will lead to more and more wild matchups.

The system is fine, it seems to have adjusted fine, the variables need tweaking, and the players need to be pointed to the rating system as the goal instead of the worthless score system.

Easy Hacking Fix:
-Patch Up your guys Privacy Policy
-Create a database of all known hacking and botting programs
-3 pt database check to see if the players is running the program
~On client Launch
~At Character Select Screen
~Switching zones
-If a player is running a hack and the check confirms it via database check:
~Flags the account as being a possible hacker, No actions are taken (no auto bans)
~A message is displayed to the correct anet staff to investigate it
~Anet takes the proper action
-If no action is taken within 30 minutes (anet asleep on the job) a 24 hour ban is issued as a precautionary event. Message sent to the correct anet staff saying "acctname has been automatically banned for 24 hours for running ____ hack. "
It would then be up to the anet staff member to increase, decrease or let the 24 hour ban stand.

Lots of successful games run a system similar to this, if not a lot more complex or robust…. why GW2 is stuck with an archaic report and wait 2-3 hours system is beyond me.

Detecting hacks (client side) isn’t as easy as you think. I’m guessing they don’t detect illegal movement server-side because it’s too processor intensive, or at least I hope that is the reason. Considering how laggy things already get because of CPU overload I can’t really blame them for not adding extra checks into that laggy mess.

It would be a lot easier than trying to detect what hacking programs people are running on their own PC though. Blizzard has attempted this a LOT and dedicated a lot of time and money towards making it work and hacks and bots are still prevalent in their games, simply because the owner of the client has full access to all of the anti-hack code running there.

It actually is that easy….
I will admit that creating it would be the most time consuming aspect if you are hand scripting every line.

Blizarrds issue is that they allow every 3rd party program known to man kind to run with their clients. So if you ban some one on a blizzard game they can just say “Oh i was just updating my hud skin and trying to play custom mp3s” and they would get off with no problem.

That is not the case with Guild Wars 2, with Guild Wars 2, you aren’t authorized to run 3rd party programs to alter the game.

If server lag is an issue, you can always outsource to a security company like:
VAC
PunkBuster
Game Guard
Game Shield

Game Guard & Punkbuster are probably the best of the 4
Since Game Guard is based in Korea along with NCSOFT, there may be a better partnership and discount possibilities.

I will quit this game and not come back if they use Punkbuster. I personally classify Punkbuster as malware. A system like VAC I would support, but VAC is owned by valve and anet might prefer to develop their own VAC like system.

Punkbuster is the worst, too many issues with false positives. Not to mention how intrusive the kitten thing is. I don’t need punkbuster running while i’m in Microsoft word.

The reason that the loot bags cant be put in your inventory as ‘loot bags’ is because of the varying level of opponent the player is killing and the variable level of the player doing the killing. Loot has to be determined on kill so they cant just throw in a stackable item that will work for all players of all levels. If they were to do that they would have to put in 79*79 bag types or 6241 bag items.

Soulbind them, and this problem all but goes away

Badges would be separated from loot sacks, and just add directly to inventory (that is if they’re not changed into an account -wide currency like they should be)

Loot sack (soulbound)- chance of this being added to inventory is equal chance of a loot bag dropping on the ground in previous system, minus a certain amount to adjust to badges being separated. when opened, contains loot appropriate for the character opening it (since soulbound, this is the character who got the kill in the first place), anything that would normally be found in a bag on the ground, besides badges

Wooden chest (soulbound)- chance of this being added to inventory is same chance of wooden chest being dropped to the ground. Upon opening, contains an item of rare quality appropriate to character opening (character who got the kill)- anything that would be found in wooden chest found on the ground

And same as above for steel chest, except exotic.

No more losing loot because of ambush, no more spamming F causing you to pick up banners/turrets or man seige etc, and since it all stacks in your inventory, you can go all night without wasting your time (and the time of everyone else in your group and in the queue) running to the vendor between battles

The only way I can forsee this being abused is that someone might save ALL their loot sacks on a character until the character hits 80, but if they have that amount of inhuman patience, let them reap the reward of that investment.

Soulbinding them wont solve needing 6241 new items added to the games item database.

The solution anet is implementing sounds a lot better, autoloots to your inventory till you run out of room, then it puts it on the ground.

Anet has said that this is the first MAJOR balance patch so I would expect several nerfs/buffs to same weapons.

I think this feature is coming. A few people on reddit have found some evidence its in the works. I assume anet will announce it when its finished and ready to go.

Even if there is a group requirement to ‘unlock’ the orb you still have the issue of a single player picking it up and flying it away.

A better system would utilize NPC’s that carry the orb to its target location.

When the orb is picked up this caravan spawns and the player can choose the path. (Garrison East Gate, Garrision West Gate, Bay North Gate, Hills North gate) note you wont be able to pick a keep your faction does not own.

Another idea is to change the orb buff to be used to disable keeps or blast holes in a keep. Instead of using it to target an allied keep you can target an enemy keep and when it reaches a certain distance (outside AC range) from the outer door it explodes that door. Or alternatively use the Orb buff to disable waypoint upgrades in keeps for 15-30 mins at time.

Because the escort event is marked on the map for all sides it should encourage a lot of open field fights.

The carrier NPC should move faster than a dolyak but slower than a running player, and gain a buff so it takes reduced damage when allies are nearby.

Now, I’m just one of the plebs that follows the blue dorito, but I was hoping for some clarification on the grand strategy for this week. Are we sticking with the ‘Kain & Yaks bash each other while ignoring the third servers borderland’ approach? The only reason I’m asking is that it didn’t seem to be all that effective in our two previous matches against CD.

Just because you see keep staying the same color in EBay BL doesn’t mean they aren’t being attacked.

I poke them every night. See if the guards are sleepin.

Not yet sleeping. While I have ninja’d Ebay things in other BL’s they seem to be quite on top of defending their own BL keeps.

We would like to have a system that rewards servers at the end of a matchup based on their performance.

Reread that. I read performance as a rating based system not ‘most points’. Basically if you can improve your servers rating, you get an award.

Adding an award can help get peoples mind off of overall points and get people to start thinking about their server rating (which is the important thing week to week).

I envision it working out like I described in the thread I linked above. The level of reward is based on your weekly wvw contribution, the type of reward winning or consolation is based on if your server gained rating or not.

The new system is already balancing the rating system out and becoming far more accurate than it ever has been. Providing an incentive for people to play for rating would be a good thing for the game.

Made that post a few weeks ago. Dumped on ideas how to make sure its fair and that it rewards players that participate in wvw, even casually. Feel free to contribute to that thread. I don’t want to repost a lot of what I said in that thread here.

Remember that the reward cant be too great that people join it to ‘farm wvw’ instead of play ‘wvw’. And the reward needs to be attainable regardless of who you get matched up against.

As far as I’m aware the only things in game that you can monopolize are items that are no longer supplied. For example limited event items.

Your definition of monopoly is way off. There are hundreds of buy orders that get filled between the highest shown buy order and the lowest sell order in several goods. To have a monopoly you need to control production, which you cannot do in guild wars 2, unless the production of a product is zero. Thus a “monopoly” like you are describing cannot be sold, because the buyer of that control wouldn’t have a guarantee.

Kind of a rough start for us. Due to some confusion with some guilds, we were outmanned for the first 30 min in Yaks BL, while EBay just took everything lol

I was wondering why you were sacrificing 3 keeps on your home bl for one keep on kain’s BL. That explains it.

If you want assignments you cant spam the portals as soon as they are up. wait for the colors switch in the wvw ui.

You really need to be able to reset them.

Make the cost significant, or time based, anything, but they need to be able to be reset.

I have almost 40 and haven’t spent any simply because the selection is permanent. That’s not fun or useful.

Get over yourself and spend the points.

It takes just as much time for you to earn another point as it took to get the previous one.

System is working currently. Under the old system IoJ and Anvil Rock would not have a chance to face SBI and prove that those servers are almost as strong as SBI, Even though IOJ was rated 400 points below SBI.

In Euro, the rank 7 server is proving its just as good as the rank 2 server, something that would not have happened in the old system. The rank 6 server is proving its rating is inflated, and needs to drop. The rank 9 and 10 servers are showing that they are as strong as the rank 3 euro server. etc. The old ratings were really not even close to the actual power of a server.

You are not forced to pull late nighters to win one round in a videogame.

And increasing your rating even more has the side effect of having to face tougher opponents in the future. Just play normally, if you win great, if you lose, at least you arn’t sacrificing sleep for it. WvW is a 24/7 game just pace yourself.

I know i’ve been crippled for 3 seconds when running dogged march + food + melandru’s runes on my warrior. I think its additive scaling. Thing is, I run into very very few people running pizza in wvw. I think its because of the rumor that dogged+food+mel makes pizza worthless. Some hard facts showing that it cancels instead might get people to start running pizza more regularly again.

ANet can nerf this food by implementing multiplicative scaling to condition duration. They don’t have to nerf its standalone value (which is fine).

The price is doing as it is expected to do.

Normally when new content is released there is a segment of the population that has to have the new shiny NOW. These people drive the price up rapidly. In a day or two the price will fall and the item will establish at normal price.

This is the reason I sold all my mini’s at 1g50s or above as soon as I got them yesterday. I encouraged all my guild members to sell and wait for the price to drop and rebuy.

Understanding basic human behavior can help when you are looking at how an items price fluctuates over time. The mini will continue to drop in price until near the end of the patch, jump in price suddenly, refall back down, then slowly climb in price as long as the item is not made available again.

Except that’s silly. Its not like gaining the next rank is harder than getting the rank you got before after wvw rank 10 or so. If you mess up putting 5 points somewhere you didn’t want to just yet, just get 5 more levels.

And yet SoS is gaining a ton of rating, showing that the ratings themselves are inaccurate.

In order for the ratings to become accurate lower rank servers need to steal rating from higher ranked ones, meaning that higher ranked servers NEED to be matched against lower ranked servers.

Ok ive been doing some thinking.

Lets say we had this hypothetical matchup:
SoR vs Eredon Terrace vs Blackgate
What do you think will happen to the ratings?
Eredon Terrace by holding a handful of CAMPS would gain over 50 rating from this matchp. This shows you that the ratings currently being used is not representing the actual performance of a server. Top servers are rated too high, bottom servers are rated too low.

So to fix it quickly anet can do a soft reset of the ladder, divide all scores by 2, add the removed points and evenly add those points to all the servers. Bringing all the servers closer to each other in rating. Then cut the random effect in the new rating system by 3/4ths. This should balance the ladder out much faster. At our current rate it seems like it will take 6 weeks of highly volatile matchups in order to even out the ratings to match performance. By doing a soft reset its possible to get it down to 2 weeks.

When you have low tier servers playing high tier servers like we do now, the low tier servers are going to get huge rating boosts despite being completely blown out. Yes Anet will eventually lower the range and then we will be stuck with stale matchups that rarely change once again.

WULD means every other week we get a blowout. Guaranteed, every single time. After the ratings settle in the new system it should be much nicer than WULD. But the ratings are just really badly off right now.

that’s why niim anet needs to move the goalposts from overall server points in a match to the rating system entirely.

If all that matters now in matchmaking is your server rating than servers should be playing for rating over overall points. Previously you had to win your tier over and over again to move up, now you just have to siphon points away from other servers by doing better than anticipated.

Move the goalposts anet in the UI to emphasize server rating.

I think the best way to fix wvw to make it fair would be to rollout actual wvw and not wvwvw 1 on1 true rankings no interference. If anet wants more than 2 worlds in wvw then goto a team system #1 & #3 vs #2 & #4 or #1 &#4 vs #2 & #3 etc. 2 vs 2 and you can’t attack your team mate. Not as accurate rankings but noone can say they were double teamed. One last thing to expand on my idea. If 1 and 3 are dominating 2 and 4 then anet can adjust the matchups to #1 &#4 vs #2 & #3 or even expand further like #1 & #6 vs #2 & #5. This would make for a better matchup balance where if #1 is far greater than #2 then It could be expanded to something like #1 & #7 vs #2 & #3. Whatever matchup that would yield as close as possible to a 50/50 split of the map and the most competetive matchup.

2 v 2 is bad. Very bad. It is actually worse than a 1v1 matchup. The most balanced scenarios with built in gangup options follow these rules:
1) there are an even number of opponents
2) there are more than 2 opponents

The first time that happens is 4. An FFA with 4 participants is the minimum for a fair system where you can have unbalanced factions and have the gameplay rebalance itself. Were stuck with 3 faction systems because DAOC.

Make winning officially about improving server rank. Update the UI to reflect this, and the problems solve themselves. Undermanned servers now have reasonable goals to attain.

Even servers like vabbi can gain rating. In their case if they just karma train camps all day they will gain rating.

I have my doubts the algorithm is giving us a 33.3% chance for red. I think it’s likely that when you are a lower pop server, you tend to get shuffled out of red when the higher ranked server gets thrown into your match-ups. Maybe I’m wrong, but it certainly seemed to work that way the last two weeks.

The math is posted. While the chance of being a particular color does deviate from 33% on average a server has a 33% chance of being one color. For example if SoR’s worst roll puts them ‘blue’ in T2, SoR would have 2/5ths chances to be green, 2/5ths blue, and 1/5th chance to be red, depending how the other servers fall (I’m oversimplifying the math for this example I know)

I have to admit I’m not sure why they randomized the colors at the same time as the matches. Imo, the top ranked server should still be green, middle blue and lowest ranked should be red.

Because that wouldn’t solve the problem for people on the top and bottom ranked servers (#1 and #24 NA and #1 and #27 EU).

Servers need to be matched outside their bracket, even against #1, #2, #3 servers in order to make the glicko rating meaningful again. Right now the rating is off reality by quite a bit. Unless lower rank servers ‘steal’ rating from higher ranked ones to rebalance the system the rating will continue to be meaningless.

It is absolutely fine that a rank #7 server can get matched up against the rank #1. SoR’s rating has been so inflated that SoS again is going up a huge amount of rating points.

It is a lifetime achievement, something designed to take years to complete.

(think HoH ranks in GW1).

I mean you can do it, but it will take a long time even if you specifically grind it. Keep in mind that supply generates at camps at 10 supply every 60 seconds. Meaning from one camp only assuming no one capped it but your server and you were the only one draining the supply from it – it will take you 16,666 hours or 694 days or 1.9 years at a single supply camp continuously without stop.

So have fun I guess.
