Is "Spirit Herder" viable now?

If i were to change ANYTHING about spirits it wouldn’t be their durability, because spirits were NEVER durable, i -would- make it so that their effect was a pulse that hit everything in range of it (IE every second everyone gets protection/swiftness/burned/dealt damage) and then the active would apply a second effect to it as well so, cripple/additional damage/blind/chill it’d make them more interesting and would make their squishyness totally reasonable due to how strong they’d actually be should you not kill them, kinda like in the first game…

Bug it, report it and I’m sure they will fix the underwater version… “You now swim faster to the surface when dead.”

Actually, i have significantly less issues with my shark rezzing me then i do my loyal Fernhound…. which is really really weird when you think about it…

good luck to get them to fix anything much less something actually useful

Maybe they’ll fix it so that it works 100% of the time underwater and 10% of the time on land.

They need to make 3 usable before 4. I start to self-heal then stupidly stop that to use the pet heal, which as you guys already know does nothing. Now I just interrupted my self-heal and put it on cd so my pet can pee on me.

Maybe if you didn’t call them worthless so much they wouldn’t feel the need to pee on you lol.

I always hate it when my pet runs over and just stares at me like “Lololol y u sleepin?”

I actually really enjoyed my moving spirit build while adventuring or dungeoneering with a party, or running with a zerg in WvW, even before the buff. They probably still aren’t viable for PvP, but they’re comfortably low-maintenance for casual play.

They actually work pretty well in PvP, especially if you’re using a sun spirit with a mesmer/MM necro on your team, ESPECIALLY a mesmer because the CD is completely avoided with their clones because the ICD is per PERSON not per spirit (IE if i get the burning proc, my pet, and all my allies can still get the proc before my 10s are up)

PS: hyenas make the offensive spirits better, i still think stone spirit needs a bit of a buff though because of how ungodly squishy spirits are in general, maybe a 3s duration?

@OP: Spirits are viable, you just gotta be smart about them, i would HIGHLY recommend not using them with spirits unbound unless you’re going to be moving around a TON, and by movign around a ton i mean like chasing DEs moving, not during one fight moving.

When i do NOT use spirits unbound my spirits just are significantly more effective, that being said i’d also say screw the Spiritual Knowledge trait because with the ICD it really is worthless.

Ranger is “fine” for PvP, however to play paid tournaments certain team builds are stronger than others and not only ranger class is kittened in there, many classes have only 1 viable build (uhhhh…so fun everyone running with the same builds).

Also, what’s the deal about loving PvP but saving “time” spent on ranger when you can create a character in 2 minutes and get it ready for sPvP.
If by PvP you mean WvW then ranger it’s quite good, there are far worse classes for WvW.

No, each class only has one “viable” build for the current META, if you don’t run the meta (because you’re intelligent enough to either counter the Meta or know how to exploit top end pvpers who only know how to fight that one group comp) you’ll still be effective, if not more so.

I think your missing is point completely.

Anyway. Rangers do great in group w3. and you can build it more then one viable way… What is this “one ‘viable’ build for the current META”?

After I typed this and was about to send a reply, It did dawn on me that your simply upset at the newest patch like the rest of us and not alot of point for us to fight each other. I just dont think everyone should be giving up when this are much worst classes in w3. Let alown PvE lol

The current “meta” in sPvP is a “glass” mes with portal, a bunker guardian, a con/support necro, a roaming thief, and a staff ele, or something very close to that.

A lot of the higher up people “think” rangers are bad, i don’t think they’re bad (no matter how pissed i am that my spirits were nerfed), that being said a lot of people don’t share my views.

PS: In PvE and WvW we are fine (except our pets in WvW but that’s more of the same issues we have in large scale PvE)

Well, Xmas wasn’t as big of a deal as Halloween in GW, that being said we’re still going to get a fairly huge event with it… that being said though, idk why that would mean we wouldn’t be getting balance a lot of the event stuff is probably done by a different group of people than the ones who do the balancing…

The block change is INCREDIBLE, I don’t know what people are on about. At first I thought it must’ve been a bug, heck I still can’t believe it.
If you’re really crafty you can block all those ranged attack and at the last split second throw for a nifty cripple to close the gap.

oh i love doing that!! i’ll also use the block in order to flee from a bunch of AoEs that you can tell a group of 5 people is all smug about being “Yeah we got em!!” then the ranger goes leaping out of it unscathed to cause death and despair is always fun!

I would love to see the cooldowns reduced a bit with the GS, and give the swoop some kind of condition..Like weakness..I mean come on, we charge and smash their faces in with it

It is the ONLY gap closer in the game that is 1200 yards, that means regardless of what weapon they’re using (other then against another ranger who has a traited longbow) we WILL close that gap and we WILL begin smashing their face in with the simple press of one skill.

Actually Swoop is only 1100 range while the Warrior Rush is 1200 range, hits for more damage, and can be traited to remove immobilized. Swoop is on a shorter cooldown though.

I’d take my swoop over that rush…. it’s barely more damage, only 100yds more range, and an 8 second longer CD, not to mention that when traited swoop has like a 9.5 second CD meaning that gap will almost forever be closed…

fixed lol, i hate how drakes wont turn towards their target upon unleashing the devastating breathe attack… that and the whole drakes STILL don’t use more then their auto attack and their breathe attack… so yeah, there’s that….

Btw, their underwater one is AMAZING!! you can fire your harpoons through it to add confusion to the target, as well as it reflecting all of the projectiles that they would be throwing at you! It’s AWESOME!! i kinda wish he’d have it on land too…

[suggestion] Counterattack block animation

in Ranger

Durzlla.6295

In first BWE i’m played female norn ranger, and i very liked Counterattack Block animation on Greatsword – sword in the ground serves as support for a strong kick foot in face.
But on male rangers it’s only boring strong slash hit.
My suggestion – change female block animation to common both for all sexes or add random choose between these 2 animations.

I would fully support this, as hilarious as it is to smash someone over the side of the head with the broadside of my sword, i’d much rather drop kick them while using my sword to keep me from falling…

Durzlla.6295

Don’t change Enlargement, enlargement makes your pet have a bigger hitbox, the point of the trait is so when you hit 25% health your pet can soak up more hits for you.

As for spirits i’d say either do what you proposed, or leave their health the same and just make them pulse their effect on everyone in the area every second, this would make them being squishy make MUCH more sense because they’d be significantly more powerful.

  • Improved the effect chance on ranger spirits to 35% base and 50% when traited.

The spirits have an internal cooldown of ten seconds. The effect can only be triggered once every ten seconds. If you attack 3 times, untraited, you are statistically promised the effect will trigger. The only way this buff helps is if you attack twice or less every ten seconds.

That’s not how probability works.
Here’s the chance you will get a proc given the number of times you attack (assuming a 35% proc chance each hit):

  1. 35.0%
  2. 57.8%
  3. 72.5%
  4. 82.1%
  5. 88.4%
  6. 92.5%
  7. 95.1%
  8. 96.8%
  9. 97.9%
  10. 98.7%

This may explain peoples “10 second internal CD” theory… 10 hits tend to take ~1sec each or so, but if you are both AoEing and using a skill that fires off shots faster then 1 second (IE barrage + rapid fire) you’ll get those 10 hits faster… anyone test that?

It’d also explain why with greatsword the effect procs the more people that are in melee range of me, more enemies, more hits per swing = more procs faster.

This is interesting, we’ve got several people who are seemingly unaffected by internal cooldowns. Perhaps this is a bug of some sort? I have tried for the past 20mins to get both the stone and frost spirits to proc quicker than 10s using quickening zephyr + petswap quickness. I traited to have 50% chance to proc and still, no dice.

I am a greatsword/shortbow user by nature but neither those nor the longbow procced buffs at a rate of less than 10 seconds between. Maybe your traits/runes on your armour are different and that’s what’s causing the bug?

It’s worth noting that there are two pieces of the ranger trait line that provide the same buffs as these spirits. Dodge rolls grant protection (15 in wilderness) and swapping weapons grants swiftness (5 in skirmishing). Perhaps these are affecting what you see as the cooldowns for the spirits?

I’d appreciate someone with the lower cooldowns to do some testing.

Maybe it’s because i use the nature’s vengeance trait, from every spirit build i’ve seen on these forums not a single one of them had that trait, yet that’s the only trait i have buffing my spirits…

The swifntess HAS to be from the spirit, that’s my only source of swiftness, the protection roll trait is plausible for that though, because i do have that trait.

Someone said earlier that they weren’t hitting a CD on the frost spirit though, so idk what to say about you hitting the 10 second ICD wall.

I’ll do some testing on this over the weekend, see if natures vengeance actually plays a roll in this.

EDIT: Wait, was this ICD added with the patch? Because i haven’t played very much since the patch hit, only like an hour and a half max, so that could be a huge factor.

Tibbel, you’re talking progressively and theoretically. If I roll a 100 sided die 10 times, approximately 1/3 will end up 35 or lower. Every time it did, that effect would trigger. Your math is correct, but your logic is not. One is not promised a trigger if you roll a million times, granted.

Yeah but if you don’t get one after rolling a million times you may as well never play a game of chance again…

Lol that is the definition of good. Sorry, the rest of us can’t kill that thief backstabbing us for 4k a hit with “awesome!!”

Wear more toughness gear? I don’t have much issues with thieves, then again they can’t hit me as hard as they hit the people that build for MOAR DAMAGZ!!

Had 3 thieves on me last night, downed 2 before backup arrived. 1800 toughness beastmaster

lol well sir, you were in a 1v3 against thieves therefore you’re hacking because everyone knows rangers can’t possibly kill a thief let alone 3 rolls eyes

i freaking love how with my greatsword and pet i can completely MAN HANDLE thieves, they jump out and it’s like “Oh how cute!! you hit me for less then my pet hits you!! Yes, just stand there as my pet wails on you… yeah just like that!!”

I’m loving the new greatsword buff =D maul gives greatsword a little more bite, but my god that 4, it just makes me all sorts of moist now!! I can block all the cowards that try to kill me from ranged as i spin to win in melee (sylvari rangers spin with each GS 1 swing lol)

Yeah the thing is, it doesn’t matter whether you believe me or not, because whether you think i’m right, doesn’t matter because i know my spirits proc more then 10 seconds without a sliver of a doubt in my mind, you’d be the one kittening yourself not using the spirits because there’s some fictional internal CD.

I’m a very poor player: I ONLY use spirits as my utilities. Partly because the only way I can feel useful to my party is to have a pod of glowing rainbow dolphins to show off. It makes me feel pretty fabulous.

My point: I’m not saying I believe you or that I don’t believe you. All I can say is that I envy you if it’s true. I count you as blessed to have somehow avoided this phenomenon.

I’ve learned one thing about ranger from these forums, if the forums says it’s underpowered, chances are it’s actually REALLY good and they just don’t know how to use it…

And did you try it on multiple mobs? Because i know i’ve had protection and swiftness stacked up on me a lot (mostly swiftness because it lasts longer) but then again i normally charge into large groups of mobs greatsword swinging.

There is so much wrong in this thread… and it’s very clear you do not use spirits if you think there is a 10 second internal CD…

GS got a huge buff, spirits got a huge buff, splinter shot got a massive buff (i can actually hurt things underwater with my 1 now!!) The 2 off hand things are buffs, CotW wasn’t getting the reduced CD or the increased area, now it does, throw torch would be able to miss if your target freaking crawled out of the way with how slow it went, now it lands a little better…

And then the last mass of underwater things i have no idea how those will help us… as far as i know there are no combo fields underwater…

It has been tested time and time again, and spirit effects do in fact, have a 10 second internal cooldown.

The greatsword buff was minor at best. Maul got a 40% damage increase. Great, it’s not like the greatsword’s auto attack needed more damage anyway. And now you can use a one shot block skill with a 20 second cooldown while moving.

Call of the Wild was a bug fix, not a buff. And throw torch didn’t need a speed buff at all. The increased speed doesn’t even help that much since the torch still travels slower than an arrow…and those can be dodged by dancing back and forth like an idiot.

As for the buff to our speargun…did we really need to deal more damage underwater? Is there even any meaningful underwater content to experience?

Um, the block now blocks ALL projectiles as long as it’s being channeled, so in other words you dont take damage until someone comes up and hits you with a melee attack, yup awful truly truly awful…

And i use spirits religiously and there is NO internal CD, i have NEVER had to wait 10 seconds inbetween procs, and another way i know that “tested stat” is bull kitten is because it used to be a 15s internal CD that was “tested” then it went to a 3 second “tested” internal cd then it was 5, there is NO internal CD.

Show me the proof of your spirits’ abilities happening more than once every 10 seconds and I will believe you. And the greatsword buff was still a minor one…considering the weapon still cuts like a dead fish.

I don’t know if I’d call it THAT weak, but it’s definitely not the melee weapon I prefer… it just FEELS weaker than anything else, even sword, which at least does some cool condition/dodging stuff and allows for different combos with the off-hand.

Eh, i think it’s pretty major, but then again i run around with my great sword because it’s REALLY good with spirits because it cleaves everything in front of you, so many procs… not to mention i also roll it more for the utility then the damage, but i will say, the damage is fairly laughable, the utility/control on the other hand….

There are a total of 5 combo fields underwater. Two of them belong to the guardian (light and fire), the other three to our pets. One is a smoke field and cannot be controlled by the player, the other two are both a poison field.

Huh, did not know this!! That’s fairly nice then, i’m assuming the poison fields are from Murrellow and the Marsh Drake?

It’s nice to have conviction in what you believe, but saying others are wrong before you bring anything to the discussion is only serving to take away merit from your own points.

GS got a huge utility buff, the damage buff is nice but nothing to shout about unless you’re in the midst of a group of enemies.

I have indeed used spirits, you’re only showing yourself up by claiming there is no 10 second internal cooldown. There is. It even says so in the tooltip (which would hopefully be correct…3 months into the game..maybe not). This cooldown shows up well enough while beating on the training dummies.

Spirits still die too quickly from general AoE, rangers do enough attacks within 10s to make the ‘buff’ to the proc-on-hit chance nigh on useless.

You could hurt things underwater before, in melee. My guardian’s ranged underwater is still far more powerful than the rangers.

Rangers are fundamentally the most boring class to play, and I was hoping for much more to increase that diversity. All we got are buffs to things we really didn’t need buffs for.

The tooltips are sadly, wrong on a ton of skills… for example, white moa, it says it applies regen…. yeah it hasn’t done that since BWE1… GS says it’s a knockback, it’s actually been changed to a knockdown, burning said it lasted 1s since BWE1 where it was changed in BWE3 to be a 3 second burn, the spirit of storm gives 7s of swiftness, not 3, Whirling Defense REFLECTS projectiles, it doesn’t block them.

Need i go on?

Guys, it is rare for a representative of the company to give us any kind of information about what may be coming up as far as changes, tweaks , buffs and nerfs. This is why. People set expectations way to high and begin frothing at the mouth (or I guess the fingers) when what comes to pass falls shy of those expectations.

After the full blown meltdown some people seem to have had, why would they ever want to slip us tidbits of info again? You were given some vague information and some hints of things to come and expanded on it significantly. This is why it is rare to see communication from community reps that give you any direct information. We have behaved ridiculously here. I will honestly be surprise if anyone tries to slip us anything other than ‘good things are coming EVENTUALLY’ based on the over the top reaction already exhibited here.

Irrelevant image:
http://i.imgur.com/PL5JV.jpg

He didn’t slip any tid bits of info. He basically said in response of weeks and thousands of posts we have a big update for you guys coming.

Its only logic that you think oh really finally our input has been heard and they are addressing issues with our class…..

Instead we get a whole bunch of pretty much useless underwater skill changes. And NONE of the changes we really needed….. oh right spirits have more hp now and can move if you trait into a worthless tree 30 points…. news flash they still get one shot lol…

They didn’t address any real issues that make this class bad.

-pets cant move and attack
-arrows can be dodged
- weapon damage in general is just horrible for ranged

What happened to the bit about changing the pacing and feel of some weapons? Oh right they made changes to underwater weapon skills….. /facepalm

ALL ranged weapon damage is bad, if you want to go balls to the wall with damage YOU DONT USE RANGED, for ALL profs ranged =/= best damage, for ranger you’d probably want shortsword+ torch if you’re going for the most damage you can pump out.

once again ALL arrows can be dodged, Anet have said that ranged is supposed to be better then ranged in damage/utility blah blah blah, but ranged would be more survivable because hey, things wont be able to hit you a lot of the time, especially if you’re using a traited longbow because you’ll be standing at 1500 range, which is the longest range ANY RANGED WEAPON can have.

And this “worthless” 30 point tree is what i spend 30 of my points in and NEWS FLASH!! they are amazing! You just need to be smarter then the average tree and place them somewhere strategic, unless you have natures vengeance like me and are going for the “Kill the spirit so i can get 2 of their actives off in rapid succession!” approach, you know…. seeing as how after the spirit dies you still can benefit from their effect for another 10 seconds, in that 10 seconds all my skills have a 50% chance of giving me protection for 1.5 seconds, and swiftness for 8 seconds…. yeah, soooooooo bad…

Yup unbelievable, Rangers are not allowed to gain an advantage by using the terrain, if you can call standing on a rock an “advantage”.

If I remember rightly, being higher in GW1 gained a Ranger extra damage, I always used that to my advantage.

It’s just stupid.

Dude that was one of the best features of bows in gw1. I loved doing that in pve and pve, and when you sniped a target, they didnt become invulnerable, they ran at you. They need to remove this feature.

you have to remember though, in GW1 there was no jumping, so there was NO WAY a mob could NOT get to you, because of this they were able to make it so they never went invulnerable, where in GW2 if the AI registers that it can’t “get to you” they become invulnerable TO YOU.

That being said it’s bugged a lot, and i’ll just be standing on a kittening platform next to a mob, walk forward increasing my terrain slightly and all of a sudden that MASSIVE BOULDER OF A MOLE HILL is to much for the champion or w/e mob to get up so i can’t hurt them anymore (keep in mind i use a great sword so it’s not -just- range), thank god that pets share a similar pathing as enemies though, that way my pet can always do damage and keep them in combat so long as he’s alive (and for me that’s a vast majority of the time)

That being said though… i do want them to take out the stupid invulnerability system… i think they should reward smart use of terrain, not punish us because we were able to get somewhere a mob can’t.

This Agony condition worries me. Especially the part of the blog which describes how you won’t be able to progress further unless you have an X amount of defense against it.

It’s just going to exclude people from content.

I’m not really feeling this new direction. No sir.

It’s not a new direction, this system already existed in Guild Wars.

While I am not a fan of the stat boost over exotics (not because I care that there is a tier above exotics, but because the WvW aspect of the game will be affected by the tier discrepancy), everything else about the armor is just stuff they already used in the previous game. Not sure how that is surprising.

What system is that? Armor infusion against Mursaat? It’s not even close to the same thing. Hell, with a decent hero team in GW1 you don’t even need infused armor. I rolled through Prophecies with Discordway.

This new Agony thing is basically a way to keep people out of certain content because you’re going to need a certain amount of Agony protection to advance past a certain point. It’s basically counter to everything that GW2’s stood for.

Um, yes you do need infusion… your little hero team, yeah they’re infused by default…. so, try doing it with a group of players WITHOUT infusion, or with henchies, you will get your kitten rocked.

Look at all you knee jerk reaction people. Seriously wait till its released to complain or make judgements. You guys act like this is the end of the world.

I am glad there will be armor with something more interesting to find. As long as the gear “grind” remains as easy as it is now (80 Exotics in this game are cake to get) then its just more content to do. Some of you need to grow up a little.

I don’t have time to grind for gear (as shown from my total lack of exotics until recently despite playing since head start) that being said, as long as the difference is minor enough that I don’t -need- the armor like in WoW idc, (IE: difference b/win exotics and rates is so minor I don’t need exotics to do w/e I want to)

However, on the bright side if they add ascended craftables and WvW gear and karma gear then I guess there’s no major issues with it for me…. However if you keep this kitten up Anet…. We’re going to have issues, hear me? This better be a one time thing!!

in Ranger

Durzlla.6295

-Spirits now apply their effects to all targets/allies in range every second, and their active effect occurs at the location of your target, if you have no target it appears at the location of the spirit. However, spirits are still killable to compensate for the power of the new spirits.

-Pets now rez for the same amount of health as a player.
-Pets can not hit enemies while moving, but their damage has been buffed significantly to compensate.
-Pets now take 75% less damage from ALL AoEs, and take a total of 90% less damage from red ring aoes.

There’s one VERY easy fix that they can do.

Rift had the same issue as GW2 does with the Rogue’s Ranger tree pets. What did they do? Made them immune to GROUND TARGETING AoE. Very, very simple fix that didn’t imbalance the pet at all.
Why? Any decent player can dodge out of a red circle. A pet cannot. It would require singling out the pet, or be caught in your melee auto attack to kill it.

It made it so that you would have to take your focus off of the ranger, and place it on the pet to be able to kill it. Albeit the pet dropped quickly when targeted, but you weren’t able to just ignore it and let someone else kill it with their barrage of AE.

I remember this, and actually was a HUGE fan of this, it also made it so running with Sir Oinks A Lot in pvp kinda forced them to swiftch from me and maul the pet for a little bit in their futile attempts to kill my beloved porcine as i pew pewed at them!

I was that way with my ranger… however i made a guardian instead of a second ranger and am now unsure which i like more…

I hope they do fix the pets. It just reminds me of how a beastmaster was never really viable in GW1 because of clunky pet mechanics.

I didn’t really mean my post as a knock to the idea of pets, I just hate to see a class that suffers because of an NPC that your sort of forced to drag around.

Glad to see people like their pets and just want them to work.

Pros/Cons of Sword/Dagger and Greatsword

in Ranger

Posted by: Durzlla.6295

Durzlla.6295

Yeah, dagger’s a bit crappy in comparison.

What decent player will stand in your bonfire for more than 2-3 seconds?

Sorry, the OP didn’t initially post whether this was mainly PvE or PvP. I was talking purely from a PvE perspective. I can see the advantages of dagger in PvP, sure, but there’s no competition in PvE.
Saying that, Bonfire isn’t entirely useless in PvP as it’s great for area denial.

Having re-read and noticed that it’s for PvP, I’ll recant my torch renarks.

Especially with the trait, it can nearly block off a point on its own and it’s a great way for saying “kitten off thief!!” That sends them scurrying back to their corner soooooo fast, and if they don’t…. Well enjoy the charred idiot!!
