I mostly agree with your choices, but can you tell my why wolf is god tier for you?
It has an aoe fear + single target knockback + cripple, is there no pet that has better skills than this?? (Not saying its bad, just curious)
Short answer is no, no other pets have better skills then this (for Roaming in wvw)
the knock back is control able as it is the first skill it uses after swap, which is something that makes the Wolf/Drakehound combo so potent.
The fear is just too useful and can save you life, fear people form stomping you, fear people try to stomp some you are rezing, fear thief’s after reveal is finished to get another 3 seconds before they can stealth, i could go on for a while about the uses of a wolfs fear, other classes can only fear people near them we can send our pet to fear one group while we interrupt another (SB/GS#5)
When i select my pest for roaming and sPvP it’s a case pick the wolf and another pet.
From a wvw roaming prospective
God tier: Wolf
Tier 1: Spiders, Dogs (except fern hound), Cats and Birds
Tier 2: Drakes (great for flipping camps)
Tier 3: Pigs (have nich spots)
Junk: Every thing else
From a wvw zereging prospective
God Tier:
Tier 1:
Tier 2:
Tier 3: Drakes, Dogs
Junk Tier: Every thing else
so after playing running around EotM for about half an hour last night in my normal roaming build, i decided to dust of my long bow and start knocking people of things. it was quite fun running around the areas that have narrow bridges and knocking people of them, Rampage as One was quite handy as well 20+ seconds of stability.
For the record i was 30/10/30/0/0 LB/GS Celestial with signets, piercing arrows and condi removal. Tonight i might go 30/20/20/0/0 or 20/20/30/0/0 just to grab the recharge trait
Perma stowing of ranger has all but occurred on most servers. It is only a manner of time and stubbornness for the rest.
I am very stubborn
you need to tell us what part of the game you are playing wvw, pve dundgens?
If it’s a general pve build
Things i would change. Drop 5 points of marks and put in to Natures magic, fortifying bond is a great pet buff trit. (moment of clarity is a pvp/wvw type of skill). Like diamond said, Spotter over beast Masters might. I would take Rampage as One over entangle its just a great skill in general and the stability is often needed. you don’t have a lot of regen (just heal skill) so Natures Bounty would better as “Natures Protection”
Things that you could consider (not necessarily better), i would take companions might over quick draw (skirmish line) you going to get little value having shorter short bow cool downs (if you use Long bow that would different story), “Beast Master Bond” might be better if it was “Steady Focus”. In general PvE i like fall traits so Soften The Fall might be a good choice for “Expertise Training”.
I this is aimed at wvw, i would read through some more in the forums
your professions Fall Trait is worth equipping as it helps moving around that map quicker and jump of walls when attacking enemy’s at the gate.
As other have said get on voice comms for your server, if they have one if not transfer to server that does, it will make the game far more enjoyable and you will meet nicer people.
If you going to wvw for the first time got to your home bl (borderlands) or even another bl stay away from Eternal battle grounds to begin as it attracts the not so nice people.
get some tanker gear soldiers/clerks until you get used to it. find out the common builds (ask in comms or map chat)
get used to dying
ranger is the kinda class where, one set of armor doesn’t suit every thing.
- I have a celestial ascended armor, it’s not the optimum for any of the builds i use but it does the job and i typically use all the stats.
- I have exotic PVT set for Zerging in wvw
- I have exotic Cleric’s and Apothecary for specialist builds, though i typically use my celestial for those build now.
For general wvw usage i would (and did) start with PVT/Cleric mix until you learn more about playing a ranger and wvw, as you get better at the class you will work out what set you want.
PVT (or soldiers) comes form Temple Karma Merchants and AC dungeon Tokens. Cleric can be brought from the TP.
rangers are fine in wvw, in solo and small groups i win some fights and i lose some fights.
and in zerging I can stay alive longer then most and farm a heap of bags.
once fight size gets above about 15v15 pets just die even, bears may make it it 20v20
- in wvw people assuming that I’m a scrub because in a ranger, then rage when you spike them.
- i love the pets, and weapon sets.
- using cc in beast master builds and watching your jaguar tear someone to bits.
- moment of clarity + GS/SB + dogs, and watching someone rage for being stun-locked for days.
- farming loot bags in wvw with an axe main hand
- see a perma stealth thief go in to stealth press gs#4 then stun lock/fear them until there dead.
- kill yacks that are being escorted by 3-4 people because the doing focus your pet and it gets 5 seconds of quickness when you are downed.
- 20+ seconds of stability
the problem with rangers is that there are so many bad ones, that it makes us look like we are a bad class, we can solo roam just as well as any other class.
I use a heap of different builds with varying success in different situations and i use most weapon combinations.
my most common trait set us is 0/20/20/0/20 and the last 10 points going in different places depending on my mood, i use celestial gear and weapons are usually great-sword plus something else (short bow, sword/whatever, axe/axe, axe/warhorn or long bow)
for armor you could use a mix of Knights, Cavalier’s and cleric
i like the main hand axe for blobbing situations to tag alot of things and get loot, and for lots of crit hits to proc companions might and sigil of fire/blood
i was soloing NW camp, as i finished killing a yak that had spawned as i was capping it a thief started attacking me using stealth a lot. The thief down me only having a little amount hp left. I was playing a ranger so the thief stealth stomped me so my pet couldn’t kd or kill him. but during the stomp channel the camp fliped and as soon as the thief came out of stealth the calmer down him and defeated him while a npc rezed me (i was defeated) so i pick up my bag and continued on my merry way
this build is fun, and you can use a variety of weapon combinations, the main idea is to snare you opponent as often as possible so you pet can wreck them.
i switch to A/A – A/WH to flip camps and i either use GS – S/B, GS – S/WH or GS – SB depending
I am uncertain it is worth spending any laurels on wvw infusions.
I would think that the wvw infusion, would be useful to roamers as they aid in soloing camps faster/easyer
i cant get them yet as i haven’t got all the weapons that i want so my Laurals are going to that at the moment, though i do intend on getting wvw ones.
i wasn’t planning on getting ascended underwater weapons let alone infusing them
I try and give you a bit more of a explanation.
1. Our stats have no effect on our pets, our pets have a set of base stats and each type of pet is different. Every point in the beast mastery line increases your pets stats. There are traits spread through our traits that effect pets in different ways. Pets Wiki
2. open world PvE is very easy (possible more so for rangers then other classes). As you level your ranger put attribute points in to the beast-mastery line and don’t use bears (i like drakes for general usage) and you will have fun.
make sure to test all the pets, and use all of your weapons. don’t just stick to bows and bears (known as bearbow and is a bit of a dirty word)
I made celestial, as i play a variety of different builds and play different parts of the game it’s working out pretty well. I use to use a mix of knights, caviler and cleric before so i chose celestial for ascended as i was going to be time gated anyway.
I still throw on the exotic PvT gear when I’m zerging in wvw
(edited by Eggyokeo.9705)
you can always fear the revivers while stomping
The piercing arrows+entangle is mostly for flipping camps. Short of traps I’ve found that the fastest way to clear one.
I’ve taken the attitude that flipping camps is easy, so its best not to spec to much in to doing so. if it takes and extra 10s (even 20s) so that you have a better spec when you get an actual fight its proberly worth it.
The fastest way i found to flip a camp is A/A and A/Wh and RoA this works with most trait set ups, just better with some.
I’m not sure about the runes either but the two things I think this build needs more of is toughness and condition damage. Forge could be good, but I thought condition duration didn’t affect sun spirit?
i don’t know either but the 6 slot is a life saver for hp builds, maybe 5 engineer 1 other
I like the idea, and i might steal bits of it.
“Martial Mastery” is a great trait, helps you get around the map quicker, more mauls more leap finishers. “Wilderness Knowledge” could be swapped for “Shared Anguish” (you have no stun beakers) or “Soften the Fall” (a great running away skill, and move around the map faster).
I think Piercing Arrows is a bit of a waste i don’t find it that useful in small group stuff. other choices in the same trait line are “Predators Instinct” for another soft cc or “Malicious Training” and use a Spider, Drakehound, Wolf or chill pet. you could also move 10 out of marks for skirmishing “Primal Reflexes” or beast master for “Mighty Swap” or a pet cool down trait.
I think there are better choices for Runes as well, something with Toughness as its primary stat, such as Earth (more protection), Forge (more protection/burning) or Melandru’s (a good set in general for wvw, my default set on alts), the new runes of resistance might be good working with signet of the hunt (i haven’t used them yet).
Either way i like the build idea.
I’ve taken the jack of all trades master of none (Celestial) as well i use a lot of different builds depending on my mood what I’m doing at the time. I was running knight/rabid armor clerk trinkets before ascended weapons so i decided to go Celestial weapons and i i’ve started Celestial armor (jacket so far).
So when I’m done i’ll have celestial ascended everything for every day usage and wvw roaming, and min maxed exotic for special occasions (PVT for zerging, Apoth for BM’ing, cleric for support and Zerker just because)
example:
i have Predator’s Instinct traited and I’m using a main hand axe in WvW in a large group fight. I’m attacking someone and there health drops below 50%, on the next auto attack i cripple them for 10+ seconds. Do i cripple the other 2 people that my axe bounces between then wait 30s for it to happen again on any other target? Do i cripple everyone below 50% every 30s before i cripple them again?
How does it work with piercing arrows and bow?
Does it stack with barrage?
How does it work with Whirling Axe?
How does it work with great sword AOE cleave?
has any one spent any time experimenting with this trait before that patch?
Snow leopard ftw
ranger.
for initial disengage
Short bow 3 + lightning reflexs turn and gs 3 on recharge
and then there is the 1h sword a pain to get use to but great at disengaging
fall damage trait produces a soft cc, so i escape alot by running of a ledge then using gs3
in large fights, the only way that i have gotten any thing that resembles value form a pet is first skill after swap (drakes, blastfinisher) or F2 skill straight after swap (dogs, Moas, might cat). this means that we may have a blast finisher or soft cc/buff every 1 min or it could fail/die
i use the RaO cool down as a kinda timer (i pop it as i engage the clamer)
Depending on how i get the ranged blind spam guards to stack i have about 50-60s left of RaO cool down.
Ill try and get some prof when i get home tonight.
I think that a good bet for leveling are drakes, and some are found in the starter areas, river drake (the pet i use the most) in queensdale, marsh drake in caladon forest and ice drake in warfare foothills. do you should be able to get them by about level 15.
You can swap pets from about from a low level.
even you these are not your starting maps you can going in to you home city use an asura gate to Lions arch and gate to Grove/Holebroke/human city and go cap pets from there.
Also unlock signet of the hunt skill as soon as you can.
as far as weapons go try them all as you go but i like longbow/great-sword for open world pve
your right i don’t understand, you are attack something that has not been released yet based on what you think will happen.
Maybe I’m wrong but i though the new maps where cross server? meaning that wen you long on to it you are fighting with all blue servers (what ever colour)
oh and making something bold does not make it correct
I think that you are taking the wrong attitude to towards this new content. Form what I understand, the new map will work on an overflow system based on server colours. Which could mean that most of the time the map should be evenly populated for all colours and there for less population disparity between opponents, which sounds like the kind of environment that you are after.
I would suggest that instead of seeing a proposed release and thinking to your self how will this adversely effect you, you could consider what advantages this could give you.
(edited by Eggyokeo.9705)
party up with 4 others, spam all duel axe skills, wipe opposition, press f, drop merchant repeat as necerssary
where do i get begin
it’s some to do whilst talking rubbish on voice comms.
Drunken Karma trains before reset
To play with others, some that i now consider friends
To make new friends
To be part of a team/community
To be competitive
I hate TV
It’s to cold/wet to do stuff out side
It’s easier to play drunk then a FPS or RTS
To reconnect with mates form high school that are spread out over the world
To laugh at the forums
To laugh at map chat
To be criticized and called useless (I main ranger)
To keep me out of the pub
The since of achievement you get when you spend an hour try to take a Keep/tower/SM and you finally do
To roam around and party up with random people a long the way
To be 2v1 and still hold 3 keeps in ocx time, i love it when my bags come to me
TL;DR to farm bags with legs
But what did you do with that build… you’re just there to soak AE. You didn’t spam AE stuns and knockdowns like a Warrior did. You didn’t spam heals like the Guardian. You didn’t spread condis like the Necro. You were just there doing nothing but soaking up some AE damage. This is what other people see and that is why the class has the reptuation that it does. The class doesn’t ‘do’ anything.
Very true, and this is that attitude that makes us seem “useless”. We are not “useless” we are “less useful then…” but that’s the attitude problem that we face to the extent that some people even believe that if your going to turn up as a ranger then don’t bother at all.
But numbers do matter, know your own class matters getting on voice comms and following instruction matters. On top that we can soft CC, Aoe Regen, Water field cleanse conditions, provide 150 precision (not so useful). But the problem is that wider WvW community (game in general) does not see any value in this.
I think the we cop a lot for flack from “zerker bare/bow” image that alot of people think when they think of rangers. it’s a pure hate on rangers as being thought of as a bunny/casual players class, it is (War is also an easy mode class as well).
I believe that even if anet buff us well in to a state of OP, we would still be considered useless. Because that’s existing attitude.
For the record i play front-line ranger GS + A/A or A/WH with 30/0/30/10/0 full PVT and i am often one of the last standing in a wipe. I only really die early if i get court out of position, even then its pop both signets and walk back to the commander.
Just remember to equip Healing Spring and Muddy Terrain and don’t bring spirits (there also one of the items that give us a bad name in WvW)
just because it has a condition proc of the auto attack does not make it a pure condi weapon, i consider it to be a hybrid of power, condi and control that has a fast rate of attack. it has an evade/disengage and a way to combat regen.
i like to use my short bow to hold people in place while my pet kills them
i use ghost pepper popper at night and omnom pies during the day. i think that when ascended armor comes out i will go full celestial
3rd party voice comms make things more fun
Also try using map chat to find other roamers and party up them, most thieves stop being a problem at about 3 party members
I’ve had good results using a 0/20/20/0/30 hybrid build mixing celestial, Knights cleric with travelers runes (melandreus would be good too)
i have had fair results in fights and gets around the map quick
Here my list:
1. total crap player
2. new player
3. average player
4. quite decent player
5. godlike player
6. hacker/cheater
^this
if i have to go buy class
In wvw
1. Guard
2. Another ranger
3. Engi
4. Elle
5. Necro
6. Mez
7. Thief
9. War
i find the short bow to be a hybrid weapon, i often use SB/GS for WvW roaming and i think that celestial is the be stat for the short bow (stardust on the TP ~1.5G).
one of the best things about the short bow is its firing rate its great for proc’in things like, companions might, spirits, on crit sigils and food (I’ve been favoring using Ghost poppers, especially at night)
it is also a great weapon for beast master builds for snaring your opponent so your melee pets can get more hits.
welcome to what i consider the funnest part of our game, glad to hear the good things can come for the achievement.
enjoy your self, get involved in your servers community ask lots of questions and don’t be afraid to party up with random people when you are running solo most of us enjoy the company.
Companions might/beast master hybrid
i find that when i use condi trinkets it just doesn’t work as well and power ones
the build is designed to blow up camps quick (~1.30) i flick some traits around depend on what pets I’m using.
Thinking of changing to full celestial and using a great-sword instead of A/WH to add some escaping ability, ore even duel bow
When i roam i don’t go looking for duels just take them as they come, and try to find away that I’m in the advantage. i win some i lose some
i play in gold league Oceanic time (SoR) so i get wiped buy groups a lot.
I also run 30/0/30/10/0, Pvt, LB/GS and signets when I’m zerging and breaking off.
no gear grinding vs gear grinding
GS in zergs the best weapon?
I don’t remember saying that, but depending on how you want to play it’s a good choice because of the damage mitigation.
Cause of this evade it´s worse in most other playstyles.
i think ‘most’ is strong word here. this would be a buff to 1v1 situation only at the price of a Nerf to many v many. we are already good at 1v1 and have many options. in most situation i don’t think it will make much difference.
Zerg´s are impossibel to balance, so they should not be used as an argument to keep a weapon from being used in most other cases.
i do see why you would take from one to give to the other, especially when you already have options for that situation “1h sword or OH dagger”
GS or not, ranger´s are “bad” in zerg´s
to say a ranger is bad so it’s ok to make them worse doesn’t make since to me.
Even though we wouldn’t do it now another shot at Greatsword to discuss
A) 1 chain NDA by giving Vigor.
B) Add evade to swoop…Discuss?
Weakness, Might, Protection or Retalation instead of Vigor?
I thought you wanted to limit the Vigor spam.We do want to but we also want this to be a weapon with some evasion capability on it, otherwise we would not have made the auto-attack on it evade in the first place.
I think that moving the evade out of the auto attack chain, would lower the great swords use in larger wvw fights, where it is very strong. whilst having an RNG evade in a 1v1/boss fight type situation is not as useful when you want to dodge a big hit. but in a large fight situation where you are taking a consistent amount of damage having a continual (passive) RNG evade will help you reduce your overall damage (especially with skill lag) then constantly having to blow you gap closer cool down.
we do have lots of other on demand evades already available to us; short bow, 1h sword, dagger, lighting reflexes, vigor traits.
I understand the you are trying to make play more active, but often in WvW passive is all that you can count on.
I would also like to thank-you for giving us the opportunity to review the changes before they are made, and for providing a description for what you are trying to achieve.
i focus on survivability first and damage second (though i do have a lot of power)
i change my weapon set depending on my mood either LB, GS, A/A or A/WH and flick a few traits around to suit.
pets: either dogs, drakes or moas. doesn’t matter just assume that there going to die. Though drakes tail swipe first after swap so you ‘might’ get a blast finisher every 1 min or so if you swap pets straight after healing spring. if i’m standing back and using my longbow i might use a red moa on passive for fury to help fire sigile proc
i’ve been considering using torment instead of fire on my lb. at the verry lest i will get yet another rabid short bow and put it on that.
What ever profession you can survive the longest on, as you will be targeted by the enemy, don’t think in terms of party support put your own survivability.
the only place that i considered this to be a Nerf was in WvW zerg fighting, (it only took 2 rangers to maintain perma water fields in lords room and on gates) almost all other situations I’ve considered this a buff. the real Nerf was to the vigor trait.
Note: it’s also less chance of drakes blast finisher going off in it.
why bundles? how do they help?
you can’t go wrong with Soldier’s (PVT) with either mlandru’s or soldier’s runes. the cost is about 500,000 karma (that will also get you 4 out of 6 melandru’s runes)
