a couple of questions, which i sure you went through on your testing precess

Why not use hoelbrak runes? (i get the krait rune choice)
Why strength of spirit over Natures Protection or Natures bounty?
Why not use earth or torment sigils? over geo
and i this is properly personal preference question but Jungle spider or Hound?

hmm three positivists and 2 negatives

positivists

- Great class (possible best) for solo open world pve and map completion
- has appropriate builds for all parts of the game (WvW zerg fighting is our weakest mode)
- easy to get started in but hard to master, you can get start and be effective quickly put there is plenty of opportunity to learn a grow as a player

Nagitives
- the pet will drive you nuts as you start getting better at playing the game
- easy to get started in but hard to master, this is the reason why there are so many bad rangers playing the game, a lot of people never get past the entry level skill cap and become bearbows.

What's the point of Stability Training??

I like this trait, though I’m currently not using it that much as i not investing any points in BM in my current more used builds. but for awhile i used a 0/0/6/4/4 condi bm build in spvp and wvw roam where i included it.

the reasons why i used it because of
- as stated above “lick wounds”
- classes that blindly use hard cc, turret engis, fear necros
- classes that use AOE hard cc Hammer wars/guards, dd eles

this means that even if i get disabled my pet is still attacking and seeing that I’m in a pet orientated build I am still doing some damage. So even if I’m chained feared I am still doing 50%+ damaged

PS i have not used this trait sense the Stability change

pve, wvw or pvp???

a very simple way to make you pet hit like a truck is to go at least 3 natures magic and use a main hand axe, you pet will have 15 -25 stack of might on it most of the time

I have 3

My main with 4 sets of shiny acceded armor and several sets of other stuff, thoug some of its in the bank and can be easy picked up by another medium.

Another how is in the process of doing map completion for me again, which will be most likely left the pve Flavor of the month areas after map completion done.

and one more hows sole purpose in life is to burn up birthday boosters in EOTM.

And i have level 80 of every other class as well

For in combat swiftness with power melee I have a set of runes of the pack on my Zerker gear
If I’m playing condi I’m using SotH or owl pet

If you weapon swap a lot tail wind in skirmishing is also a good source

So i suppose it depends are you think condi melee or power melee

i was asking about WvW roaming, and i ussualy go alone. So i dont care about team help/pressure xD

Thats my doubt… for WvW roaming, whats better? Dire/Raib/Apo and the shoutheal or soft trait xD

This is a difficult question to answer, as it more dependent on the player the opposition and any that you are roaming with. I have and Ascended Apoth set and a Ascended Rabid set and i constantly swap between the two.

From a solo point of view.
If i play Apoth then i am almost unkillable 1v1 BUT i may not be able to kill my opponent either and then it becomes a race of who get board quicker. if i running a rabid build I am very likely to be able to kill my opponent but i am also more likely to die in the process.

I have experimented with Dire gear awhile ago im slightly more likely to kill my opponent then apoth but a lot less likely then rabid and the longer the fight goes on the more likely i will die due to the fact the once my health starts getting really low there is little i can do about it. So i cant see a reason why i would use Dire over Rabid.

I don’t have a lot of trouble with Warriors, i find its just a case of out living them.

Try not to use any big CD’s when berserker stance is active just kite them like mad (SB#3 is good for this) other then that it a case of don’t die and eventually there health bar will whittle away.

With melee builds in general Torch is a grate weapon to punish people for getting too close as well.

I took the opportunity last night when i was using NV to run a jaguar which i don’t normal do i pvp/wvw because it so easy to kite, i normally use an owl (for chill and swiftness) if i choose a dps pet. But with swiftness and stealth from Guard and NV the jag was connecting a lot more often. So between might stacks, Bountiful Hunter and pet prowess i was seen some good sized numbers from the jag on a regular basis.

I was using Jag/wolf combo, most other builds i use Jungle spider/wolf

Hyjaxx another major change worth point out to you is MH Axe now grants might on auto attack, so this coupled with NM#3 give you an instant beastmaster build as you pet is walking around with 12ish stack of might in a 1v1 and 25 in 2v1.

So i decided to run NV for the first time in over a year.

I ran this and it worked a treat, in 2 hours or so i won most of my 1v1 (had a few stale mates where we could not kill each other) quite a few 2v1s went well and managed to troll a 3v1 for quite some time until i got changed CC with every thing on cool down. bit slow at flipping camps though.

Signet of the beastmaster was the grandmaster trait in Marks that allowed the actives of signets affect the player as well, no that trait is gone and the signets active affects the player by default.

Hyjaxx welcome back, I use to run your 331 (0/6/6/2 for though who do remember the old trait system) build back in that day.

the 331 NV builds a still just as strong as they every have been, how ever we have a few more choices that we can use that are quite strong.

Glassbow rangers are now quite competitive and there are a few variations on that.
Survival of the Fittest Rabid condi builds are very popular. 0/2/6/6/0
and there are some strong trap builds based around the new trapper rune
And signet builds are very strong as you don’t need “Signet of the beastmaster” any more

How's Ranger in dungeons?

Rangers are not grat at WvW Zerg fighting, but are excellent at everything else. WvW roaming, spvp, dungeons, Pve are all things that ranger can be very good at, it depends on the player.

because of the higher rate of fire, but mainhand axe will crit pretty often as well both with ricochet and splitblade

the slightly longer explanation is that, due to the rate of fire the will be on average less time from the end of the cool down of the previous Proc to the next Proc with the short bow compared to other weapons

whilst i have no had the chance to test it out as i yet, Last night i threw on the old “hide in plane sight” (first time in proberly over a year) on a 6/0/6/2/0 glassbow build, and that works ok. So I’m looking foreword to using the updated version tonight.

I’m still not sure that i would take it over “off hand training” or “okenhart salve” in a condi build, but i will give it a go

I had a go at throwing this rune set of my apothecary gear last night i had some pretty good results. I was almost unkillable 1v1, fights against other bunker builds it was a fight to the first person to make a mistake and held out 1vx ok. having that extra 4-5k heal on trolls is quite use full getting a little spike heal at the start can be a life saver

I not sure weather i want to use these runes on my rabid set (krait runes currently), my zerker set (pact) or my celestial (hoebrak) but it is worth thinking about

i play this as short bow-s/t it works for me, i use short bow from the majority of the fight to ware some one down and use s/t for either the evasion area denial to get so quick damage from the torch to down some one

I don’t understand what the problem is i have never been kicked from a dungeon and i play ranger. Why are people getting kicked what are you doing so wrong that people decide to kick you.

On that note I have kicked AFK’ers and DC’ers (after they have been gone awhile), so if you are being kicked for that the fair enough

That being said according to the wiki for whatever reason the heal from Invigorating Bond DOES scale off player’s Healing Power.

This is true i have tested it, and arena net put that the fact that it does in the initial patch notes and in the information before it was released.

most other almost every other pet based effect comes from the pet stats (or lack of stats)

Front line Ranger Build

I’ve been playing front line ranger for a few years now prior to sept 9 i used 6/2/6/0/0 but from then on ive been using variations of this build i adjust it depending on the size of the fights and whether we are pushing a choke or open field (RaO vs Entangle and SoS vs MT) and i still cant decided between “honed axes or natures protection”

As long as a build can be resonably countered by someone who’s resonably prepared then there is no issue.

I think this is the key here. If someone is full zerker in gear, traits and utility and complain that the died to burst class, LB ranger for example and complain that its op is kidding them self’s, it just like complaining about condis if you have no removal or reduction.

I think that thief’s have a hard time of it because for so long that have only use stealth as a form of survival and that doesn’t necessarily work against a glassbow.

I think that we have all felt the pain for fighting someone health pool gets a bit low and all of a sudden you are downed because a LB ranger rocked up. but thiefs have been doing that form launch

i looked at the pets and read through a couple of guides, thought wolf + juvenile spider would do well
Also, i changed my mind about the trait spread, don’t really like the sound of 3 might per signet and as i am running axe OH i will try out the GM in 2nd trait line (Moment of Clarity):

I may wanna switch out Rampage As One for Entangle but I’m not sure, what do you guys think?
And also, is the wolf f2 also able to proc Moment of Clarity (GM in 2nd trait line) if it interrupts?

Your build looks very solid,
I think that you don’t really need “agility training” if you are using “signet of the hunt” as you pet is getting 25% movement buff from the signet. you could use “pets prowess” or “companions might”.

Some thing to think about also is dropping “Signet mastery” for “Natures Protection (NM trait)” i really like “natures protection” in glass builds, both melee and LB simply because its a great anti ganking trait, in case you get jumped by a thief of a LB ranger between “natures protection” and “companions defense” that quite a bit of protection.

As far as RaO Vs Entangle goes i would take Entangle because you already have some stability on SotW and entangle is a good way to set you self up for a GS#3,#5,#2 combo.

Do you use Strider's Defense? Why? Why not?

I gave it a bit of a go after the buff in wvw roaming using 0/6/2/6/0 and x/6/6/x/0 zerker melee builds and the only times i felt a positive from it was flipping camps getting less hits from the scouts and in fights against bad players who don’t weapon swap.

But in those type of builds i would rather take MoC for the hilt bash buff or even something for a different trait line such as signet CD or protection on dodge

I think it depends on what game mode you are playing, pigeon holing your self in to only playing the same weapon set across various game modes is more or less hamstring your self both in efficiency and more impotently enjoyment.

I play all game modes, tending more towards PvP and WvW but over the last season i have made the conscious effort to do more of the living story content. here are some of weapon combinations that I use:
Fractals/dungeons: S-WH(or Axe)/GS or S-WH(or Axe)/LB
Open world/map completion/event farming: LB/GS change as needed
Living story: LB/GS change as needed
WvW following a commander: GS/Axe-WH
WvW roaming: Various different combinations
Spvp: Various different combinations

Favorite pets in the game and why?

I play all game modes and use a variety of different build in WvW and spvp so I use a few different pets.

Shark: my most use pet it’s the only one that I have bothered to name as it has been on my bar since I tamed it, just after launch.

Wolf: my main PvP/Roaming pet, the only time I don’t have him on my bar is in duel Bird beast-master builds.

Drake hound and jungle spider: I grouped these two together as I use one or the other in the same type of builds. I use these guys in any none pet centric PvP/roaming build. It basically poison and ranged attacks vs KD, cripple and AOE Immob.

River Drake: the pet I use in the most variety of game modes, in PvE its my go to for trash mobs and general event farming. I use it in wvw roaming to help flip camps quicker and in spvp when I’m being team fight centric. Also note when I want to use duel drakes such as following a commander in WvW and map/event farming in pve I’ll use a fire drake.

Owl: my go to PvP and roaming beast master pet (raven if I want to go duel bird)

Jaguar: my go to PvE single target pet. In dungeons, LS and random open world stuff I often use Jag/River drake combo.

Ascetically, such as taking screenys I like the wolf and the owl

To be honest i made those suggestions based on no trying to change the way mistsim initial build is already set up as appose to just giving a completely new one with different utility’s and weapons.

when i do BM builds (which i haven’t for a while) i use SotF as muddy terrain is pretty good and getting you pet to land F2’s, Something like 0/2/0/6/6, 0/2/2/6/4 or other variations

the thing i dislike about these sorts of builds is that you are going BM and you are using emphatic bond, witch will really hurt you you could use purity/genoeristy sigils and healing spring for condi removal . Also Fortifying bond is one of our best BM traits particularly if you are using MH axe.

I think that you main method for killing people in these types for builds is poison.

here are some variations that you could think about, i tried not to change to much so the builds still feel the same (play style wise). in all cases Settlers, Clestial and rabid are all appropriate ammys

0/0/6/2/6 BM

0/0/6/4/4 Might staking on pet

0/2/6/4/2 pet hits like a truck

I find with world v world for a ranger that there is not one build for all situations. I change my build depending on the fight sizes that i am in. so for small group stuff (10 or less) i will spec almost a roaming build, so i have slightly more glassier gear and more person condition removal and healing, where as in larger group fights (20+) ill spec PVT, condition reduction (not so much removal plenty AOE removal with that) and get most of my healing from stacking and blasting water fields.

fair enough, the people that I’m trapping with might not know that you can just walk out of it while in stealth though i typically use MT as well so it might be that that is catching them as well. This is pretty rough though.

looking at you video you did get hit by it you just managed to walk out of it in between pulses, did you have some sort of condition reduction or passive removal on at the time?

I regularly use it on thief in stealth (MT as well) and i find them stuck in it when the come out of stealth.

i think that the only way to extend the pet condition duration is with Malicious Training in the marks line.

Malicious Training is bugged (no effect), it’s been reported and ignored.

same with the +50% boon duration one…. and apparently the +30% crit damage doesnt apply on F2 skills, according to battosai

That’s a bit kitten, are you sure then not just the tool tip bugged? i haven’t used it for a while (over 6months) do i don’t know much about it

differently give it a crack, i find it the most fun (not necessarily most effective effective) roaming build.

there are two different RtW build types.

The first is full glass where you use RTW and at least 5 point in skirmishing and the other points in either WS or NM (6/5or6/x/x/0). This is kill fast type of build, and possible the most glassy build in the game, very fun but get use to dying a lot.

The second has a little bit more resilience you put 6 in marks for RtW and put 6 in either WS or NM for a little more defense/condition removal (6/2/6/0/0 or 6/0/2/6/0). This has a bit more survivability. Also very fun I play the NM version a lot.

I can say that i have ever seen any go rtw and a heap of points in BM effectively but i am sure that some one is.

then there is a variety of no so common LB builds the don’t use RtW.

Sadly enough i have even had ok success in fights just rocking our PvE s-x/lb predators onslaught, when i have quickly ducked in to wvw to do some daily’s

I’m new to trap builds as well (started playing them about a month ago) but hear is my view.

It never occurred to me to use Dire stats for it especially with trapper runes plays a big part of you survive ability. why not use Rabid? I’m even considering making a sinister set for traping.

I agree with using sword/torch over axe/torch if for no other reasons then leaps.

for a stun beaker you could swap spike trap for LR and swap hide in plan sight for WS skills recharge.

For rotations i have always found that the ranger is not suited of big skill rotations such as an ele of necro. there a some two or three skill combos that chain nicely. but i have always played as use what skill best suits the situation, (some times its a case for this skill is off cool down so i better use it ‘throw torch’)

the fear from the wolf is a use full tool, which increases in usefulness when you a roaming with a fried or two.

things you can use it for
- Getting people away from you for some breathing space
- Running people of an edge
- disrupting a thief stealth spam (running him out of his shadow refuge to reduce stealth time)
- fearing people off siege
- fearing people out of the camp cap circle (stopping them for getting to the circle in the first place.
- fearing people in to a trap of setting them up for a entangle

the next couple a particularly great in small groups
- fearing people off rezzes/stomps
- fearing people away when you are rezzing/stomping someone

one you start thinking about then you will think up even more uses for it

another thing to note wolf like all dogs will use the kd as the first skill after its swapped to. I typically have my none wolf pet out most of the time and swap to my wolf for a Fear or KD.
example
- you get downed
- opponent starts to stomp you, you use thunder clap (down skill 2)
- opponent starts to stomp you, you swap to wolf it kd your opponent
- opponent starts to stomp you, you use F2 wolf fears you opponent
- opponent starts to stomp you, thunder clap has recharged
if you are in a duo situation you friend has had ample time to rez you

3 newbie ranger questions

All of the spiders F2 work kinda like Sharpening Stones but for the spider. you press the f2 key just before you want it and the next x amount of attacks by your spider does something, in this case next 1 attack causes immob.

pet wise fluffball is right you have pretty much hit the nail on head. for any non-beast-master build I generally go Wolf/Drakhound or Wolf/jungle spider depending on weather i want the poison from the spider or extra knockdown form drakhound. Wolf is just a solid choice for any competitive play.

other pets that you might want to consider/experiment with are the other spiders, the Chill bird/dog/cat (i only use the bird), river drake and jaguar

it might have been sword/pistol because they(at least 1) where making that annoying popping sound that the toy gun makes.

but infiltrators strike and Shadow steep make sense for what was going on, as i was unable to hold them in place with immob spamming (i play ranger)

G’day people,

First up I’m not here to complain but just to ask a question so i can understand.

Last night in wvw i came across some thief’s that were bouncing all around the screen, it was a case that i would chase one down a bit and then they would teleport? to a different location. There where some stealth in there as well.

I was wondering what sort of things where they doing to achieve this. I’m sure that is was exaggerated by the fact that there were 2 or 3 of them, but i would still like to know what they where doing? weapon set/utility?
