The letter only talks about protecting the settlements from wildlife. I’ve been following the story and reading memos/talking to NPCs. I’ve got time to figure things out and read up on what to do, but my friend who can only log on once a week doesn’t. The lore and rewards are not important to him. He just wants to log in to see what’s new and be pointed in the direction to do new things.

But if he did the new things last week (that includes the Canach-solo-instance) he would have known that Kiel is the one who wanted to deal with the contracts. And so it’s a good idea to talk to her first. Especially because she is the main-NPC for the “missions” the last weeks.

I did the Canach instance and I didn’t know Kiel had anything to do with contracts. The story is so disjointed as to make no sense. I’ve done nearly everything and I still have no idea what is going on at Southsun or who any of the NPCs are.

I said nothing about the events staying in the game. I said the storyline should always be told in the game and not on websites. The most recent example would be the Canach story that was printed on this website. That should have been in-game and not on a website. I shouldn’t have to go outside the game to catch up on missing plotholes and current events.

Most of the information could however be found in-game, even if it required some actual exploring and listening.

The parts that are NOT found in game would however been quite hard to put into the game in a logical way and said information is also not really needed to actually understand the story-line but rather used to flesh out the characters a bit extra for people that care.

I see dozens of people railing on this game for it’s lack of storytelling yet I only see you defending it. I am beginning to think you are an Anet employee.

How can you be so dismissive of such a glaring problem as the lack of coherent, meaningful and comprehensive in-game storytelling?

Do you enjoy flipping over every single rock in hopes of finding a word or number that can be pinned to your wall and connected, by yellow yarn, to other randomly placed clues?

I have no clue what’s going on in the game, in regards to the storyline. As far as I can tell, there is no storyline. There’s just random, named NPCs spouting meaningless chat bubbles with absolutely no in-game point of reference for the average player.

ALL of the story should be told in-game. There should be NO reason one would have to go to a 3rd party website to learn the storyline.

But that storyline is over, why would it be in the game if it is no longer active?
If people want to read up on stuff that have happened they can use the wiki.
Or do you want every single holiday event to stay in the game all year around and forever? Because that is basically the exact same thing. After the Halloween was over people would have to check the wiki to get the story.

And for all we know the event of last Halloween will NOT come back for the next Halloween.

Playing GW2 again question about the story

There is no story. They claim a story exists but I haven’t seen it. Nothing but forgettable, generic NPCs who love to bark orders and are too weak to kill crabs.

I’ve been playing this game for ~3 months and am already regretting the purchase. It’s sad, really, because I’ve played GW1 for years and still have fun there.

How would your rate Southson Cove

in Last Stand at Southsun

Posted by: Elbegast.6970

Elbegast.6970

Do negative numbers count? I give it a -5/10.

There’s nothing compelling, heroic or fun about killing crabs as the main point of a storyline.

The Southsun storyline characters are generic and completely forgettable.

The isle, itself, is poorly designed and looks more like a desert than a lush tropical island. The very landscape makes me not want to go there.

The Canach instance feels as if it were thrown together at the very last moment.

The entire storyline made me feel as if I were a trash man or a high school janitor rather than a hero. The players should be at the center of the storyline rather than the generic NPCs.

The whole event was just terrible all around.

The story doesn’t talk about Canach. The only mention of him is on a tooltip on a back slot item.

I get it now, you’re just trolling.
I now that you’re late to the show, but that doesn’t mean the story of Lost Shores didn’t happen. It happened in the open world, so it can’t be conserved just for you. Except that it’s all on GuildWiki for you to read. But you don’t read it because you don’t care about the story. You just come here for trolling those who do.

But I’m not trolling. I’m dyslexic. I can’t read huge walls of text, on websites, and make sense of them. I need audio and video. Heck, it takes me 30 minutes just to type a simple reply like this one. I have to go over it again and again to remove mistakes.

I do care about the story but I haven’t seen one in-game. I’ve seen some random dialogue that meant nothing to me as I have no point of reference for these characters. Just a bunch of seemingly random chat bubbles that make no sense and aren’t even directed towards me.

Canach - Who is his voice actor?

He has a voice? I’ve completed the solo instance and I haven’t heard Canach say anything even remotely audible.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Canach%27s_Lair_%28story%29

Inspector Ellen Kiel: You got away clean. Why’d you risk coming back just to stir things up again?
Canach: I’m doing what the Lionguard can’t–I’m helping the refugees. The Consortium used legal trickery to trap them here.
Canach: I needed to send Noll and his superiors a message, and these people needed hope. So I provided it.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Well, that hope you provided left a trail of wreckage and broken bodies across my island.
Canach: It doesn’t matter. The last of these contracts will be destroyed and the settlers will be freed.
Inspector Ellen Kiel: Not by you. You’re officially a Lionguard prisoner, Canach. Again. You’ve done all the damage you’re going to do.
Canach: You still don’t understand. My plan doesn’t require me to see it through.
Canach: Every possible Consortium record depot on this island has already been marked.
Canach: Soon, every residency contract will be destroyed, along with anyone who tries to defend them.

I saw all that dialogue but it was only in chat bubbles. There was nothing audible after I ‘captured’ Canach. I guess the lack of audio was a bug?

Perma death -OR- the dropping of all loot on death, i dont know why, but i feel like this makes MMO’s so much fun for so much longer! Can you imagine how many more guilds would work together so much more seriously, how many people would travel in massive groups, how much RP…. Just the thought makes me kitten. A HC mode of Guild wars 2, where loot tables are quadrupled in favor of the player, and mobs are taken more seriously!

Grr, not sure why i like this, maybe its an immersion thing?

[swear word removed by moderator]

That’s one thing I miss about EvE Online. Death has consequences. If you don’t have a jump clone, you are out of luck. Perma-death really adds to the immersion.

Just to clarify in case someone misinterprets this post- not having a jump clone in EVE doesn’t mean permadeath. It does mean losing about 2-3 weeks worth of character progression, but your character doesn’t permanently die in that situation…

Yeah, sorry about that. My post was a bit vague upon rereading.

You lose some progression, your implants, your ship and it’s mods. One death can be very, very costly in EvE Online. I love it.

Everything I saw in the video, I can do on my Thief. It’s called shadowstep/shadow return. I don’t play other classes but I just assume everyone has a similar ability.

Did you watch it till the very end? In the end he teleports great distances, more than 1200 in rapid succession. Can’t do that with shadowstep.

Also he’s a ranger.

Yeah I saw that. I can do something very similar in appearance with my Thief abilities (appear to teleport, over and over, in rapid succession) but not at a distance of 1200 yards.

I don’t play a Ranger so I am clueless as to their abilities.

I destroy the Karma items for the joy of freeing up a bag slot. The mystic toilet brings me no joy at all.

well it really helps to bring in extra profit by un-soulbinding items and turning them into a sellable exotic

When I want gold, I go to the glitched camp in Brisban Wildlands. I, quite literally, stand in one spot and collect loot bags from the neverending mobs (mobs that are so glitched that their loot isn’t affected by diminishing returns).

Butter and chocolate = an easy 100g+ per 8 hours of farming. Not to mention the crafting mats and magic items.

The mystic forge does nothing but consume your gold while you gleefully watch with bated breath.

Way to with admitting to exploiting. DING!

I didn’t glitch the mobs out. I am simply doing what I am supposed to…..defend the camp from invaders. If Anet considers it an exploit, then they should fix it. I’m not stopping them. I’m merely taking full advantage of the mechanics the game has provided me. In other words, I’m playing the game rather than the game playing me.

I think it’s called taking advantage of a situation you clearly knew(by your own admission by calling it glitched) was not intended instead of reporting it. If i’m wrong you have my apologies.

I’ve reported it (and so did my little brother) but it’s apparently been bugged out for quite a few months. It’s “Seraph Observers Waypoint” in Brisban. I noticed many posts about it from doing a google search.
It doesn’t seem to be a priority for Anet, so I am taking advantage of it while it lasts. They have the power to fix it. They choose not to.

I think you are missing the point here- it has nothing to do with how to earn gold, it has to do with turning soulbound karma items into something you can either sell or use on another character.
That you can do via the forge.
No one here is talking about making money

Fair enough.
I would still rather destroy Karma items than to mystic-flush them. At least you know you won’t get your hopes up, only to be let down, by simply destroying them.

I would like it more if I understood what was actually happening in Southsun. The only story I have gotten is from the footnotes on the two back pieces and I have done everything, including the solo Canach instance.

The storytelling is severely lacking in Southsun Cove.

Who is Canach? Who is Kiel? Who is Noll? Who is Null? Who is Faren and Kasmeer? Why are they in Southsun? What is the Consortium?
I haven’t a clue as to any of it. I’ve read the journals and talked to the NPCs but I can’t make heads or tails of this extremely disjointed ‘storyline’.

There needs to be more cutscenes and audible dialogue. I don’t retain the written word very well so any text-based story is lost on me (I am dyslexic). And besides that, people don’t like to read ‘quest text’. Just ask any old WoW veteran.

Why?
Because the first part forced you to mount on a Horse and use special ‘Lance Abilities’ rather than your own class spells and abilities.

To this day, I shudder at the thought of running ToC 5 man.

I didn’t mind the Canach fight so much as the lack of storyline inside the instance. But I do agree, temporary, gimmicky, non-class/prof specific abilities are extremely annoying in a role-playing game.

You know that time when you find a really cool TV show and realise you are watching season 3? And then you watch the repeats to catch up on old story?

Yeah, that. Not too difficult, is it?

…Except that the previous parts of the story have been completely removed from the game.

If I miss a couple seasons of a television show, I can go watch them online. If I miss content that has been removed from GW2, well, you see the dilemma. At least, I hope you do. The entire story should always be available in-game. I shouldn’t have to do a wiki search to understand the plotline.

This game needs more cutscenes, audible dialogue and some place to catch up on backstories….especially for those who did not start playing on launch day.

I’ve read real stories….LotR, Ender’s Game, 1984, Atlas Shrugged, Mark Twain, etc. Southsun’s ‘story’ (what little there is of it) is so disjointed as to be incoherent, without parusing through extra-game articles and websites.

A story is still a story if you’re not the central person in it, but it is obvious that you care only about YOUR story. What you find lacking in Southsun isn’t storytelling, it’s you standing on a pedestal.

Then you weren’t there at the Lost Shore-event in november. There Canach had dialogues and a letter.
And he has a dialogue with Kiel now when you beat him at his Lair. And you can read the story-pieces that are spread out over the island, like the log at Canach’s Folly. There are some information about him.

Also feel free to read the letters from Lost Shore. The link is in my signature.

I’ve been playing for almost 3 months. So, no, I wasn’t at Southsun in November.

So, in order to figure out what is going on, I must scour every in-game pixel in hopes of finding small paragraphs that detail the storyline? I’m sorry, but that isn’t storytelling.

The story should be unavoidable during the course of the event. Rather, it seems that the story is being intentionally hidden from the player base.

The story I have gotten so far….

The Cabbage Patch King went on vacation.
He made the animals angry.
We captured the Cabbage Patch King (why? because he made animals angry?!?!).
We are left farming wildlife because they love to steal treasures and hide RNG chests under their shells.

Now tell me, who is Canach, Noll and Kiel? And why should I care?
Canach never attacked me.
Kiel has never helped me.
Noll is just an arrogant, bossy Asuran (in other words, generic) who deserves a swift death at the hands of a random Charr Warrior.

And don’t get me started on Karen and Fasmeer. Both are more useless than an Endless Mystery Tonic.

Are we supposed to go out and buy books to get the story? I don’t understand the lack of meaningful, in-game storytelling.

No, you don’t need to buy any books. It would help to talk to NPCs, read your letters or do the story mission, which you obviously didn’t. If all you do on Southsun is farming Champion chests, it’s small surprise you don’t notice any story.
You are obviously not interested in any story. That’s ok, but it entirely destroys your argument.

I like the storytelling so far, but I also think there could be more. Not everything collected at one place, but more tidpits around Southsun. Faren and Kasmeer for example, apart from their arrival, they have played no role on Southsun.

Which NPCs should I talk to? I’ve talked to Kiel, Noll and that other little Asura. They told me nothing of relevance. Kiel just barks orders at everyone (I would kill her if I could). I’ve read the two journals in Southsun and they made no sense to me. I still don’t understand what is going on and I know that I am not alone in this.

Who is Null? Who is Noll? Who is Canach? Who is Kiel? What relevance do they have to MY story? They aren’t involving me in any of their storyline affairs. They are just yelling at me to do their grunt work…“Go kill karka!” and what-not.

I want a story, told exclusively in-game, that is relevant to me and my story. I don’t want to hear “Go kill Karka!”. I want to hear Kiel beg and plead for my assistance. I want Kiel to tell me everything she knows about the story IN A CUTSCENE and not in some random dialogue that is aimed at another NPC in the area. I want Canach to talk to me IN A CUTSCENE before he proceeds to attack me for no reason.

You can sugar-coat it all you want but the storytelling is severely lacking in Southsun.

Stealth doesn’t make him regenerate. It takes a lot of time (and you almost running next to where Kiel is) for that as he will target you and run as soon as you’re out of stealth.

In fact Stealth is one of the best ways to make him step on a trap:

Once you enter Stealth, he stays on place, which makes very easy to push him into a mine with time to take the correct angle. You can also stealth and wait for him at the other side of a mine that you hacked and he inmediately will run in that direction when Stealth wears off.

Stealth was resetting him (to his starting location) when I was in there but sometimes he would regenerate his health and sometimes he wouldn’t. It seemed a bit glitchy.

Go slow, mind your positioning and keep an eye on your chat log. It’s okay if Canach smacks your glass cannoneer a few times. He hits like a level 3 Sparkfly.

Don’t use stealth. Roll to evade on knockbacks and on nearby bombs that are about to detonate, use caltrops if it gets too frantic and kite him slowly.

If you are downed, just die quickly and start over.

It’s not about ‘solo’ as much as it’s about scalable dungeons. In theory, a dungeon could be scaled for not only solo play but also for groups greater than 5 players.

I’m glad ArenaNet listened to those of us who didn’t complete Flame & Frost due to the group dungeon.

Single player storylines should never require you to form a party to complete the content.

If you enjoy group dungeons, run the solo instance and unlock the 5 man.

I enjoy running content with my wife and friends and guildmates.

Single player storylines should never require you to make your friends sit it out while you play, just like they should never require them to play with you to go forward.

I agree with that but, until a better solution is implemented, I will take the ‘solo only’ content over forced grouping any day. At least the content is now accessible by everyone, despite the length of their friends list or guild affiliation.

guess Anet can’t win, people complain when forced to make groups for living story stuff, then complain when you can do it by yourself now..

No, I’m complaining that I won’t be able to do it, not because I can’t do it solo, but because I only play with my boyfriend. All of the content we do together. We can’t do this one together, therefore we probably won’t do it, unless I’ll do it secretly while he sleeps.

The single player is one room with one boss, then you get the option to do a multiplayer explorable mode.

IMO saying you’re not going to do any of it because you have to kill 1 boss alone is like saying you won’t do AC with friends because you have to run across Ashford solo to meet them.

and once again my problem is not that he is hard, but that I want to play with friends and I don’t have that precious alone time that I could use to do this.

So make it a competition. You should both run it at the same time and see who clears it faster. The winner gets their choice of dinner or a movie or some other reward. Be creative.

I’m glad ArenaNet listened to those of us who didn’t complete Flame & Frost due to the group dungeon.

Single player storylines should never require you to form a party to complete the content.

If you enjoy group dungeons, run the solo instance and unlock the 5 man.

Thief is terrible to play properly. If you make one tiny mistake, you are instantly dead.

He soloed the Molten Facility as a Thief. It took him nearly the entire duration of the event but he finally managed to clear the last boss. Afterwards, he ran CoF path 1 to replace all the gold he spent on repairs. He is now hiding in Southsun, disguised as a tree, thanks to the Endless Mystery Tonic he received from a Black Lion Chest drop.

Try walking (not running) from one side to the other in as straight a path as is possible. Time the walk and assume an average gait of 3mph.

20 minutes = 1 mile
30 minutes = 1.5 miles
40 minutes = 2 miles
etc,etc.

Stuck at 4/5 forever...

I’m at 4/5, also, and it is driving me insane. They should remove the achievement from my list or give me 5/5. Either will work.

I despise dungeons. However, I tried to run Molten Facility and every group I joined fell apart halfway through.

Crate drop rate nerfed?

One thing I don’t get is why Anet made the chance of getting a ticket so low, as well as made the crates so easy to farm. As long as a person knows how to farm crates they will get on average, around 1-5 crates an hour (along with a good amount of T6 mats). However, if you buy a crate using gems to gold each crate would be over 4g. Putting these two together I don’t understand why anyone would buy crates over just farming them unless they were pressed for time.

Anyway, so far I’ve opened 46 farmed crates and have only gotten a portable forge, a focus skin, and some karka slaying potions. But meh, I can’t really complain since all the farming has netted me about 80g in mats.

Farming gold is easy. I can easily farm 100+ gold per day by, literally, standing in one certain spot in a specific zone (a zone I will not name). However, in Southsun, I have yet to see even a single crate drop.

Averaging doesn’t work in the face of diminishing returns and RNG. It’s great that you have had so much success. Not everyone is as fortunate.

I feel this is a bit overexaggerating.

1st: I highly doubt there is a place where you can stand and farm 100g. Due to DR, that seems impossible to me. Even with my farming route and +320MF I get around 8-10g/hour, then have to stop becouse of DR. Standing in the same place killing mobs over-over should kick DR in like in 10 mins.

2nd: I have learned statistcis, and I know that what I am about to say is nowhere near a representative group but: I have farmed with over 20+ different people. All of them have gotten crate drops. For some it took 10 mins, for some 2-3 hours.

So imo you are either highly overexaggerating or the unluckiest person in the world (sort of like an anti-lottery winner).

I’m not exaggerating. I have never gotten a crate drop in Southsun. I’ve finished the achievements, have both back pieces, have done all the current dynamic events and not a single kitten crate.

As far as my secret gold farming spot, DR doesn’t seem to affect the mobs’ loot drops. It’s a glitched event. It will be fixed…eventually. Until then, I will reap the free gold.
