All together with a different chatcolor than plain white it would be perfect, yes. , But obviousely never going to happen as anet ignores RPers strictly…

Just like any game developer ignores the “minority” in the game. Honestly, a lot of the changes made to games, not just gw2 specifically, are NEVER intended with roleplayers in mind. If you cant adapt, you get left behind. That’s all there is to it. There’s always going to be groups of players that are going to remain an afterthought.

Yeah, if a very small group of people are going to be affected by a change that is better for the vast majority, then so be it.

Spock

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few

That’s pretty much it. Especially when people are flipping kitten over something that isnt even in the game yet. People need to wait until the 15th to flip out after they log into the game.

And I suppose you need to hit the brick wall whilst going 70mph before complaining to the driver that the wall is in your way?

I can’t believe there are so many people complaining about this change. It is the best thing to happen to GW2 since launch. Overflows were always a major pain in the down there. Now they will be gone, and you get a proper map to do world bosses with including Tequ and Wurm.

They have simply gotten rid of the main servers and renamed the overflow to ‘MegaServer’. Don’t you understand that? THIS IS THE OVERFLOW SYSTEM. But now it’s worse as you will be on overflow 24/7.

I have a question… Will this be implemented in major cities such as Destiny’s Reach or Lions Arch(if its ever rebuilt) as well? While I welcome this megaserver system for the pve maps I would kinda like to remain isolated by homeserver in those cities.

It will be implemented, firstly, in all major cities and also in zones level 1-15. It will NOT be implemented in mid and high level zones until after it has been tested and refined. So, if you don’t want it in Divinity’s Reach or LA, you are out of luck.

Yes… yes it is… WoW had 13 million players, they lost 5 million so they needed to merge the dead servers down to keep the population up.

ESO is launching with this feature so that they don’t have to deal with bad press in the future if they ever needed to merge servers. This is a smart marketing move on their part.

As far as I know people didn’t ask for this feature until many months after launch when people started hitting max level and the mid range zones were all dead.

Also I haven’t seen any responses here actually calming that the game is dying… just that they are merging servers because the population is too low. Those are not necessarily the same thing. And the game is merging servers with this new plan, that is pretty clear.

GW2 is not subscription based, so number of current players isn’t as important. Unlike WoW and ESO. So comparing these games with each other is a bit ridiculous.

In a non-sub ‘cash shop’ based mmo, player numbers are of paramount importance. More so than a subscription based game. World of Warcraft can sustain itself on a tiny fraction of it’s current playerbase so long as it retains it subscription model. Guild Wars 2 is barely surviving on it’s waterlogged raft called the ‘Gem Store’.

To the people who say that the Megaserver is a sign that the game is dying:

World of Warcraft had 8+ million subscribers when they merged their servers. Is that a sign that the game is dying?

Elder Scrolls Online is launching with this feature. Does that mean they are expecting to have very few players?

When people asked for this feature at the launch of GWII, was that a sign that the game was dying a few days after it launched?

World of Warcraft had 14 million subscriptions before Cross-Realm Zones. They had 8 million at implementation of ‘Connected Realms’. Now they are well below 7 million.

Yes, reverting from multiple servers to this system is a sign that the game is dying. TESO is the only one doing it proper and releasing the system at launch.

To maximize your odds of running into other RP players more often, you’ll want to make sure you’re on the same world (generally TC and Piken are viewed as the RP worlds), and in guilds with other RP members also on that same world. For example, everyone from TC currently will be set to high priority to sort together, same thing goes with people who are all a part of the same guild (so guild up RP folks!)

We’ll continue to monitor, adapt and update the system as we go forward as well, for now I’d suggest seeing how it works once we enable the mega server system across all maps and then giving comments and feedback when you see it in action!

(edited to add Piken!)

I’ve already seen it in action. It was called ‘Connected Realms’ and it caused more problems than it solved. That’s why I’m no longer forking over $15/month to that other company. They destroyed my game with their ‘Connected Realms’…..just as you are doing currently with the ‘Megaserver’.

It’s too late for answers, Colin. I’m done with this game. As soon as I saw the word ‘Megaserver’ I knew my time in GW2 was over. If I can’t play on the realm I chose, I don’t want to play at all.

To be fair you have been “done with this game” about 5 times since release, and yet you are still here. So clearly people won’t take your “threats” seriously.

Would you like me to reinstall the game and take screenshots of my empty achievement panel? I can, in fact, be done with the game and still post on the forums.

“…I definetely never needed or wanted to see gigantic masses of random people around.”
HOW?!

I mean, one of the biggest issues with PvE is that you feel that you are playing a SinglePlayer MMO, Group events are rarely done if you’re not on the “farm maps”, make the game feel alive, with a lot of people moving around is what it needs, reminds me when this game launched, everybody having fun while playing PvE, thing we now lost.

Are there 20 people AFK on your front lawn at the moment? Would you want 20 people to be AFK on your front lawn at any given moment? Seeing fewer people in the game world is far more immersive than seeing armies of zerg running around every corner.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Don’t role-play a villain. The in-game ‘report’ feature does not distinguish role-playing from griefing, apparently. And many players are more than happy to hit that report button if you say anything against them or their favorite characters.

Funnily enough we see people that have earlier demanded something like this, now whining about it being implemented.

A lot of us wanted districts like GW1. We didn’t want a World of Warcraft ‘Connected Realms’ cloned system. Districts give you a choice. The megaserver doesn’t and makes the decision for you. It’s not at all what I wanted.

“Megaserver” is nothing more than a fancy name for “Overflow”. Regular realms are being deconstructed so that overflows will be the only maps in existence.

Another company tried this same approach to realms. I quit that game after their ‘Connected Realms’ went live. Players would run around mocking and ridiculing other players for being from a different realm. Role-players were harassed by non-roleplayers. The more populated areas were even more laggy, glitchy and bug-ridden while most of the gameworld was still as desolate and empty as ever.

I’m not going to play on this ‘Megaserver’. I’ve been there and done that. I’m not doing it again. If they wanted everyone in the same game world, they should have implemented the system at launch. It’s too late now.

It’s too distracting and blocks my screen. Can’t well do jumping puzzles or solo roam WvW with my head the size of a small dirigible. Since crystals are being converted to charges at a 1:1 ratio and stones at a 3:1 ratio, logic would dictate that a transmutation charge is required for any transmute, regardless of level.

Is there a reason you can’t afford such a small fee to travel…?
It’s like a few silver at most >.>

A few silver is no small fee. I can’t even count how many times I have died and was forced to log out and back in as I did not have the silver to revive at a waypoint. And don’t even say “but the nearest waypoint is free when you die.” It’s not free if the nearest waypoint is contested and you are forced to choose a waypoint farther away.

I’ve stopped using waypoints. I now walk (yes, I walk. I don’t run.) from zone to zone and forsake all forms of fast travel whenever possible.

Question. I thought if you died and logged out, you would still be dead when you logged back in. One time my warrior died and I logged out. She was still dead when I logged back in the next day. (She fell off a cliff in the Straits of Devastation, surrounded by contested waypoints). >.> Unless it’s because you don’t even have one silver in your account?

I die and can’t WP because I’m too poor to pay and the nearest WP is contested. I log out, log back in and am very much alive and standing in my racial capital city. Often, I have only copper and nothing more in my wallet. I don’t know the game mechanics involved but I do know that it works. I’ve done it numerous times as I had no other choice but to sit and wait indefinitely for some player to come along and revive me.

I see. It must be one of the game mechanics to let you log back in alive if you don’t even have enough to pay for a waypoint in your account. Maybe keep enough for a few waypoints in your account, maybe one gold, or ask a guildie for a loan instead of the long run or waiting for a helpful stranger is an option? It’s hard to believe that there is someone who has played the game for very long and has made only a few copper. If your money is tied up in the trading post for example, your decision to not even have 10 silver for daily expenses in inventory is a decision, not a problem with the game mechanics.

I don’t join guilds. I don’t run fractals or other group dungeons. I spend most of my game time wandering aimlessly around Tyria, living in the moment.

In-House Voice-Overs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Elbegast.6970

Elbegast.6970

Quality >>>>>>>>>> Quantity.

And your suggestion is purely about quantity, imho.

As far as quality is concerned, it could be better than using professional actors. For the in-house voice over work, the flow of the conversations could be improved as the voice actors could be in the same room with one another while recording….rather than being in separate studios, hundreds or thousands of miles apart. The actors could then take visual cues from one another and react to variations in inflection and tone in a way they cannot do at present. Remember that last NPC conversation from the Tavern with all the awkward pauses in dialogue and the ambiguous tonal inflection? That could have all been prevented by having all of the voice-actors in the same recording studio at the same time.

Blizzard (not a fan. just using them as a real-world example), for years, has done a massive amount of in-house voice-overs. Most of their main characters are voiced by their developers and other employees. They don’t seem to be trading quality for quantity but rather have improved upon both. Why couldn’t ArenaNet do the same?

In-House Voice-Overs?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Elbegast.6970

Elbegast.6970

There seem to be a lot of complaints about the lack of voice-overs for new LS content. Well, you know that skinny guy in the Environmental Arts Dept….the one that does impressions? He has quite a voice. As does that new girl from accounting. I would even wager that Bobby Stein and Colin Johanson could do a couple of unique voices if they were to try.

So, why not use in-house talent for voice-over work rather than hiring external voice actors? It would seem to be far more cost effective than the using professional actors and would also allow much more voice-over work to be presented in each release (purposely not taking into account the per-release character allotment for audio as the data budgeting can be altered).

He for the most part fits the bill for the anti-hero archetype to complete the personality flavors of the hero cast.

No, just no.

1. Everything he does goes wrong. His plans never go according to his plan.
2. He can’t (or doesn’t want to) avoid capture. He’s more than happy to sit in a jail cell as the world around him burns.
3. He’s Sylvari. Enough with the Sylvari in the storyline. And this is coming from a player who plays Sylvari exclusively.

Free re-traits and free armour repairs are NOT features and could have easily been slipped in some living story patch notes.

The free armor repairs could also very easily have been worked into a reward for completing heart/dynamic events involving blacksmiths around Tyria.

For example, let’s say there’s an achievement under ‘exploration’ in which you must aid a blacksmith in each zone and once the meta is completed, you never pay for another armor repair from any source ever again. It could have added a whole new dimension to ‘map completion’. If it were apart from the Living Story, it would also allow players to complete the achievement on their own terms rather than worrying about being time-gated.

“Part of the development process is prioritization, so I’d like to know what you feel are the highest impact items you think would improve our storytelling delivery. What are your top three requests?”

1. Hire new writers. I’ve seen more compelling storytelling in a Woodenpotatoes video than anything I’ve seen in developer interviews or in-game through the LS.

2. Stop budgeting story for the sake of technical data in each release. If a developer tells the writers that ‘you are allotted x number of words’ per release, that developer needs to find a new job.

3. Stop telling the story outside of the game. All those web short stories and external developer interviews that explain the motivations of the characters and outline general plot details….they all need to stop. If you can’t tell your story exclusively in-game then you don’t really have a story at all….just disassociated chapters that force the customer on an extra-game scavenger hunt.

in Battle for Lion’s Arch - Aftermath

FAIL

I still don’t know what is going on with the ‘Scarlet Briar’ LS arc. My problem isn’t with the character of ‘Scarlet’ so much as it is with the writers themselves. I can no longer trust them to write a compelling story for season two after season one’s incomprehensible plot line.

Aside from the the writing, the technical implementation has been severely lacking. A great many LS releases have suffered from achievement/event-breaking bugs or have suffered from unnecessarily strict or poorly designed event mechanics.

I loved this game before the living story began. I played for hours each day. Now, since the LS, I barely log on anymore. The LS has potential but much of that is wasted on temporary content, disengaging stories and poor rewards.
